Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Jason Miles: Principals' Federation President on the low number of teachers wanting to become principals
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's go to principles. A new survey shows only eighteen
- 0:04Speaker 1: percent of teachers actually dream of becoming a school principal.
- 0:07Speaker 1: More than half of primary school teachers say they have
- 0:10Speaker 1: no interest at all. Jason Miles, as president of the
- 0:13Speaker 1: New Zealand Principles Federation, joins us this morning. Hey, Jason, run,
- 0:18Speaker 1: is this surprising? I mean, not everyone you know on
- 0:22Speaker 1: the shop floor wants to be the boss.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Well, you know, principal ship's a challenging role, but it's
- 0:29Speaker 2: also rewarding role. I think teachers are very busy doing
- 0:34Speaker 2: their own job and sometimes they don't look at the
- 0:38Speaker 2: potential and the opportunities in front of them.
- 0:41Speaker 1: What do you think They're completely different skill sets, aren't they?
- 0:44Speaker 1: One as a management job, isn't it.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Well, you have to be a quality teacher first, run.
- 0:50Speaker 2: To become a principal, you have to be a registered teacher,
- 0:54Speaker 2: and yeah, you need to have that experience to lead
- 0:57Speaker 2: teaching and learning in a school. But once you get
- 1:00Speaker 2: into that role, you understand the role is all about relationships.
- 1:04Speaker 2: And you know, you've got a lot of other varied
- 1:08Speaker 2: roles such as employment and finance, health and safety, property
- 1:12Speaker 2: crisis management. So yeah, a lot of the roles about relationships.
- 1:16Speaker 1: What's the pay difference, Like if you're a senior teacher,
- 1:21Speaker 1: been there a long time, you know, top of your
- 1:23Speaker 1: game kind of thing versus a principle.
- 1:26Speaker 2: That varies. It depends on the size of the school
- 1:29Speaker 2: that you're a principal and the role, the middle leadership
- 1:33Speaker 2: or senior leadership role that you've had. But it's there
- 1:38Speaker 2: isn't a huge discrepancy when you look at smaller schools.
- 1:43Speaker 2: As you get into larger schools there is a larger discrepancy.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Is that the problem because why would you have all
- 1:49Speaker 1: the responsibility and not much more pay.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Well, I guess we don't always get into a role
- 1:55Speaker 2: because of the pay, but it is certainly valued and earned.
- 2:01Speaker 2: But our teachers sometimes don't back themselves. So we need
- 2:07Speaker 2: to have our experienced principles identifying those teachers who will
- 2:11Speaker 2: be great principles because you know, that's the future of
- 2:16Speaker 2: our profession. So our experienced principles have a role to play.
- 2:20Speaker 2: The government also has a role to play, and we're
- 2:24Speaker 2: very pleased to have worked with the government to get
- 2:27Speaker 2: two hundred aspiring principles places for professional development this year.
- 2:31Speaker 2: It was well over subscribed, but there is something that
- 2:35Speaker 2: we haven't had an education for a number of years.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Jason, appreciate your time this morning. Thank you as always,
