- 0:07Welcome back everybody in here to the
- 0:09postgame pod at Auburn Undercover.
- 0:11Nathan King here joined by Patrick
- 0:13Bingham. Uh nice to get outside for a
- 0:15minute after being in the arena the past
- 0:16uh the past couple days. We decided we'd
- 0:18brave Broadway for the uh for the post
- 0:20game. So
- 0:21>> he would not let me do it on the top of
- 0:22Tootsies
- 0:23>> on the on the top. I don't think they'd
- 0:24let you in with that giant tripod on the
- 0:26uh on the top of tootsies, but uh uh
- 0:29Auburn in that building today uh may
- 0:31have seen its NCAA tournament hopes come
- 0:34to a close. 7262 they lose to Tennessee.
- 0:37And Patrick, it really did not feel that
- 0:41way that that was going to happen until
- 0:43it did. It was a it was a very uh
- 0:47violently sudden cascade for this Auburn
- 0:50team. You don't see, you know, a 10-
- 0:52nothing run is considered a kill shot.
- 0:53you know, there's lots of metrics around
- 0:55like how effective that can be. If you
- 0:57have x number of them, you you can win,
- 0:58you know, games on a higher percentage.
- 1:00A 20 nothing run for for Tennessee. Uh
- 1:03it was again, Patrick, very dramatic the
- 1:05way that this game flipped because
- 1:07Auburn, they were playing tremendously
- 1:09through the first 30 minutes 30 minutes
- 1:11of this game and really felt like they
- 1:12were in control.
- 1:13>> Yeah, I just feel like they were doing
- 1:14everything they needed to do to control
- 1:17this game early on. They were making
- 1:19threes early on. Tennessee was not
- 1:20shooting particularly well. I think the
- 1:23defense was really the biggest thing of
- 1:24like I mean it just it looked the best
- 1:26it probably has at least since Florida
- 1:28if not all year. And I mean they were
- 1:30getting stops. I mean it was just like
- 1:32everything you could have like said,
- 1:34"Oh, this needs to happen." Auburn was
- 1:35killing them in rebounding. I mean it
- 1:36was like literally everything. If you
- 1:38were to dream up this morning, how can
- 1:40Auburn take control of this game? They
- 1:42did. And then it I mean it was such a
- 1:44fast 200 run. I mean it was just like in
- 1:47seconds it almost felt like the entire
- 1:49game had flipped. And you know, for as
- 1:51much as like during these last almost
- 1:53like month of well this loss is really
- 1:56bad for Auburn, but they still have a
- 1:57chance to make the tournament and they
- 1:59had these big opportunities and then
- 2:00well they didn't capitalize on this but
- 2:02they beat the bad team. Well, they have
- 2:03another big opportunity they can take
- 2:04advantage but they couldn't beat Alabama
- 2:06and this was kind of the last one and in
- 2:08what felt like just a couple minutes it
- 2:10snaps away and now it sure they could
- 2:13make it but it is no longer in your
- 2:14hands
- 2:15>> and I think that's what made things so
- 2:16frustrating for them in the second half
- 2:17is that it was so getable. you were
- 2:20playing so well. This was not the
- 2:22Alabama game where it was like you you
- 2:24were out it was out of your hands very
- 2:25quickly
- 2:26>> and they were holding you at a 10-point
- 2:27lead.
- 2:27>> Correct. It felt like you were playing
- 2:29so strong throughout and so it wasn't
- 2:32overly surprising to see I hesitate to
- 2:33say tempers flare but I mean they were
- 2:35just they were just extremely frustrated
- 2:37toward the uh toward the end of the
- 2:38game. I mean it Steven Pearl it felt
- 2:40like that tech from Steven Pearl was
- 2:41bubbling for
- 2:43>> five or six minutes obviously and one of
- 2:45the things he talked about after the
- 2:46game is that it was so it was so
- 2:48frustrating for them not to be able to
- 2:49get to the foul line during that uh
- 2:51during that stretch obviously was
- 2:52frustrated with the officiating um
- 2:54because he said that over the course of
- 2:56the season look Auburn's fifth in the
- 2:57country in free throw shooting during
- 2:59other teams runs and he's he's right a
- 3:01good way to slow those down is just get
- 3:03to the foul line game takes a major step
- 3:05down you start making subs I think
- 3:06that's something people need to think
- 3:07about you can bring your subs into the
- 3:09game and and get to the free throw line
- 3:10and make some points. During Tennessee's
- 3:12200 run, do you know how many free
- 3:14throws Auburn shot? They shot exactly
- 3:15one free throw. It was a one-on-one with
- 3:17Keon Hall and he missed it. So, that was
- 3:19a huge difference as uh as well. But,
- 3:21yeah, you're exactly right. I mean, at
- 3:22the beginning of the game
- 3:23>> heading into this one, rebounding was
- 3:25something Auburn talked about so much
- 3:26because Tennessee quote unquote punked
- 3:27them in that first game. Plus 16 on the
- 3:29boards in that first meeting. Auburn was
- 3:31up like the entire game rebounding
- 3:33margin. I can't remember what the final
- 3:34end by one.
- 3:35>> They won by one. They they had uh 16
- 3:37offensive rebounds Auburn did in this
- 3:39game. 22 second chance points for
- 3:41Auburn. Like this was not a matter of
- 3:43physicality. This was not a matter of
- 3:44effort. It was just something that
- 3:45cascaded so quickly. And uh Nate Nate
- 3:48meant for for Tennessee. I know he was
- 3:50kind of questionable going into this
- 3:51game.
- 3:52>> Looked plenty healthy. I mean he put
- 3:54Tennessee on his back in this game.
- 3:55>> Yes. Yeah. In the second half, you could
- 3:57just tell it was all trending towards
- 3:59him taking over. But I think that's the
- 4:00thing in the second half and
- 4:01particularly during the meltdown in that
- 4:03200 run is for as good as so many things
- 4:06that had been like things that had
- 4:09really struggled Auburn, you know, like
- 4:11making difficult shots or the turnovers
- 4:13or whatever, it all started to cascade.
- 4:15And it really was, I mean, Stephen said
- 4:17it was a tale of two halves, but it
- 4:18really was like a tale of like this is
- 4:20the best of what this team could be. And
- 4:22then we kind of saw a lot of what the
- 4:23worst of of just not making shots, the
- 4:26turnovers really pounding them as well.
- 4:28>> And I'll go back to a phrase that we've
- 4:30heard Steven Pearl turn so many times
- 4:31this season and that is, you know, let
- 4:33your defense don't let your your defense
- 4:35affect your offense.
- 4:36>> That's like this was patient zero for
- 4:39that in in any sort of basketball
- 4:41scenario. And Todd Pedford put it really
- 4:42well after the game. He's like, "Yeah,
- 4:44you know, we thought about it while we
- 4:46were shooting." On the other end, we
- 4:47thought Auburn had four turnovers during
- 4:49this 20 nothing run. you know, they
- 4:50thought about it when they were making
- 4:51passes. It was like, yes, and and the
- 4:53crowd is one thing I'll say, too. They
- 4:55held that crowd at bay the whole game.
- 4:57Like,
- 4:57>> yeah,
- 4:58>> Tennessee fans were dying for some
- 5:00momentum and Auburn kept holding them
- 5:02off.
- 5:02>> And there were several times early in
- 5:03the second half where they like got it
- 5:04within seven and the crowd kind of lit
- 5:06up and then Auburn made a shot and it
- 5:07just answered
- 5:08>> when the when when Tennessee I'm sure
- 5:09Tennessee fans thought this might have
- 5:11been a trigger point was they get within
- 5:13six in the second half and that's when
- 5:14Jaylen Carrey has a technical foul and
- 5:16it's like, oh my gosh, you keep blowing
- 5:18these opportunities. cuz Auburn ends up
- 5:19going back up 10. They could not
- 5:22overcome the momentum Auburn couldn't.
- 5:24Like once you gave Tennessee an inch,
- 5:26that crowd went a mile and and it cast
- 5:28the Steven Pearl thing like him getting
- 5:30a tech, you know, playing his former
- 5:31team. Obviously Tennessee fans were were
- 5:34letting him hear it. Like it just
- 5:35started to roll and roll and so
- 5:37obviously a very frustrating result
- 5:38here. Look, Patrick, it's not surprising
- 5:41surprising that Auburn lost this game
- 5:42like that they they they needed this
- 5:44win. it was going to be kind of an upset
- 5:45win for their NCAA tournament chances,
- 5:47but the manner in which it happened now
- 5:49has you waiting for selection Sunday and
- 5:52that's all we can do now at this point.
- 5:53And Stephen Pearl made his point to the
- 5:55committee very clear after the game.
- 5:57We've heard him do it a couple times,
- 5:58but this was a very detailed I think I
- 5:59think he had the notes ready on his very
- 6:01detailed uh you know description of why
- 6:03Auburn should make the tournament.
- 6:04>> Yeah. And that's the thing is even just
- 6:06talking to all the players of course
- 6:08everyone is vouching for themselves and
- 6:09giving all the different reasons but it
- 6:12again it's one of those things I think
- 6:14and we said this I think coming into the
- 6:15week of
- 6:16>> so much of it I still think is almost
- 6:19outside of your hands. Yes in the
- 6:20committee's hands but also in other
- 6:21bubble teams hands of course like Miami
- 6:23of Ohio losing um in their conference
- 6:25tournament opens up a bit steeler.
- 6:27There's a bunch of different things of
- 6:28like how this will play out, how bubble
- 6:30teams, a lot of bubble teams have
- 6:31already lost or lost their first night
- 6:32of their tournaments. And so, a lot of
- 6:34it is just going to come down to um how
- 6:37other teams do, where your stuff stacks
- 6:39up with. And at this point, you know, it
- 6:42is out of your hands.
- 6:42>> I mean, it's I and I hes I hate to like
- 6:45beat a dead horse with the conversation.
- 6:47Maybe some people are tired of of
- 6:49hearing like, you know, what are Auburn
- 6:50tournament chances? Blah blah. But it
- 6:52but it really is, like you said, it's a
- 6:53living, breathing conversation because
- 6:56we didn't know Miami of Ohio was going
- 6:57to lose until this morning. Like that
- 6:59now introduces another element into the
- 7:01conversation. And and here's the thing
- 7:03about what Steven Pearl said and I I saw
- 7:04Auburn fans saying this like everything
- 7:06he said, he's right. Like every single
- 7:09point he made, he's right. Auburn has
- 7:11more quality wins than everybody on the
- 7:14bubble. They have more top 50 net wins
- 7:16than everybody on the bubble. They have
- 7:17more wins against the field than
- 7:19everybody on the bubble. They have more
- 7:20top 25 road wins than anybody on the
- 7:22bubble. The problem is they have more
- 7:24losses than everybody on the bubble. So,
- 7:26how much is that going to to matter
- 7:28here?
- 7:28>> And I think it's not even just like
- 7:30overall losses cuz I think we've also
- 7:31seen the argument of well Auburn
- 7:32shouldn't have played that crazy
- 7:33non-conference schedule because it's
- 7:35hurt. A your strength of schedule is
- 7:37actually what's helping you in my
- 7:38opinion, one of the things that's
- 7:39helping you. But I think it's also it
- 7:42for me and I think for a lot of people
- 7:43it still comes down to it's not all the
- 7:46losses. It's miss the first time,
- 7:48Mississippi State the first time,
- 7:50Oklahoma. Like I mean it's it's those
- 7:52that have cascad
- 7:58so many opportunities to just get one or
- 8:00two more and then we're probably not
- 8:02even having this conversation
- 8:02>> and that's the conversation that every
- 8:04team in Auburn position has at this
- 8:05point of every season is you want to
- 8:07nitpick what's happening right now and
- 8:09how you compare but in reality the
- 8:11committee looks at every season in
- 8:12totality and every season is its own
- 8:14thing in totality. you if Auburn doesn't
- 8:16make the tournament, it's not because of
- 8:17what happened here in mid-March. It's
- 8:19because of it's because of you losing at
- 8:20home to Texas A&M. It's because of you
- 8:22losing on the road. It's because of you
- 8:23losing at home to miss because you're
- 8:24losing on the road to to
- 8:25>> and the same was true last year when
- 8:26Auburn lost to&M and then lost to
- 8:28Alabama and then came here and only won
- 8:30one game. The committee didn't hold a
- 8:32twoe span over the course of Auburn's
- 8:34entire body of work.
- 8:35>> No. No. And and again to Patrick's
- 8:38point, the problem is not that maybe
- 8:39like some other bubble teams that have
- 8:41kind of cast, you know, fallen here at
- 8:42the end. The problem is this is a month
- 8:44plus span of mostly losses for the Sover
- 8:47team. And when you really look at it,
- 8:48again, we talked about that Kentucky win
- 8:50so huge. If they do get in, I think
- 8:52Elijah Freeman's tip in will continue to
- 8:54be what pushed them because what have
- 8:55they done other than that Kentucky win?
- 8:56They beat a really terrible LSU team
- 8:59that ended up being the 16 seed. They
- 9:00beat them at home and then they got
- 9:02revenge for for for losing to
- 9:03Mississippi State, but that's a team you
- 9:04already lost to during the regular
- 9:06season. And so Auburn now gets to gets
- 9:09to sweat it out. I will say, you know,
- 9:11not much confirmation or anything here,
- 9:12but you know, I asked Steven Pearl if
- 9:14they've had conversations about the NIT,
- 9:16like just, you know, hey, if you don't
- 9:17get selected, have you had conversations
- 9:18about going to that or another
- 9:19postseason event, and he said no.
- 9:21Obviously, they have, but you know, he
- 9:22he's using this as an opportunity to
- 9:24continue to
- 9:24>> they want to make the other thing first.
- 9:25>> Yes. They want to prop up their team.
- 9:27And it was I thought it was funny.
- 9:28Stephen was like he saw people get mad
- 9:30at him for making the the argument after
- 9:32the Alabama game. He kind of had a
- 9:34similar similar thing after that. And he
- 9:35was like, "Look guys, it's my job to
- 9:36like prop up my team." It would it would
- 9:38be concerning if you weren't
- 9:40>> like actually these guys just send them
- 9:42home then they don't need to play.
- 9:43Although obviously Auburn fans feel that
- 9:45way maybe at this point but uh you know
- 9:47after all of this we still will head
- 9:48into these last 72 hours um with a
- 9:51conversation to be had on the bubble and
- 9:52we'll still have to track what other
- 9:54teams are doing on the bubble. There's
- 9:56just so many conversations to be had.
- 9:57The Miami of Ohio conversation to be
- 9:58had. People are talking about you know
- 10:00hey just put those teams against each
- 10:01other. Call the Bruce Pearl Invitational
- 10:03and uh and make him get on he'll be on
- 10:04the selection.
- 10:05>> Make him go make him get on the call.
- 10:07give Miami Ohio a home game there in
- 10:09there in Dayton and just kind of see
- 10:10what happens. I've seen people bring up
- 10:11that like Texas has fallen so far off
- 10:13and Auburn owns a headto-head over them.
- 10:15Like it's it's just there's a lot really
- 10:16to to go off of here. But in terms of
- 10:19today, this is a
- 10:20>> this is a this is a crushing result.
- 10:22This is this is a painful result um for
- 10:24Auburn at this obviously this stage of
- 10:25the season just because you felt like
- 10:27legitimately for 30 minutes and you
- 10:28really were you were playing such a
- 10:30tremendous game. Um but now it is in the
- 10:31committee hands and maybe the hands of
- 10:33some other bubble team. So we'll see
- 10:34what happens. keep it locked over at
- 10:36auburncover.com.
- 10:37We will do our best to make sense of it
- 10:39all uh leading into uh Sunday evening
- 10:41where Auburn will learn whether it is a
- 10:42tournament team uh that gets to go to
- 10:44the first four or if the Steven Pearl
- 10:46year one of Steam Pearl era ends with
- 10:48either the season being over or another
- 10:50event. So for Patrick Bingham, I'm
- 10:51Nathan King. Thank you guys so much for
- 10:53joining us this week at the SC SEC
- 10:54tournament. We appreciate everybody
- 10:56watching our videos and uh and keeping
- 10:58track as Auburn won one game here, but
- 10:59we've been here since uh since Tuesday
- 11:01documenting things. So, we will see you
- 11:02guys back in Auburn for the selection
- 11:04show and for the start of spring
- 11:06practice next week. And we'll see you
- 11:07over at auburn undercover.com. Talk to
- 11:08you'all soon.
