- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31So today we're talking about hanging on to the past.
- 0:35Now, I'm not saying not remembering the past, because we
- 0:38all remember the past. We most of us do anyway.
- 0:41There are some people who have blocked it out, and probably for
- 0:43good reason. It's lovely how the brain works
- 0:46to protect us all the time. And sometimes it just blocks
- 0:48things out and we can't remember stuff.
- 0:50And a lot of times it has a good reason it doesn't want to
- 0:53remember things. I'm not opposed to that strategy
- 0:56one little bit. However, we're talking here
- 0:59about hanging on to it and lamenting it and bringing it
- 1:03back up over and over and over and over again and not allowing
- 1:07yourself to move forward. You know, this is one thing that
- 1:10Buddhism teaches that is such a beautiful part of it is that the
- 1:14past is gone and the future is not here, and that if you live
- 1:17in the moment, you will always be better, you will always be
- 1:21OK, you can always let go and move on.
- 1:23Now I am not saying we don't learn from the past because we
- 1:26have to learn from the past. As as we go through things, they
- 1:30are lessons. But when we keep hanging on to
- 1:33the past and we keep going back and beating ourselves up for
- 1:37what we could have done different, should have done
- 1:39different, paid attention to differently, going through all
- 1:44the choices again and again and again and again and again just
- 1:48causes the pain to repeat. And as soon as that starts
- 1:51happening, you go from just having the pain in that moment
- 1:55to actual suffering. You start stepping into
- 1:58suffering. And as you've heard me say
- 2:00before, pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.
- 2:04And suffering is one of those things that can it be avoided is
- 2:08always the question, can it be avoided?
- 2:10And I truly believe that we can avoid most of the suffering in
- 2:14our life by stopping ourselves and saying, you know what, I'm
- 2:18going to release this. This no longer serves me to pay
- 2:22attention to, this no longer serves me.
- 2:25And in part of that learning of letting go and part of that
- 2:29learning of understanding that it's the past that's showing up
- 2:33because it's not in the present, it's in the it's in the past.
- 2:37And we keep bringing it forward by what we think about it, how
- 2:40we loop back to it, how it becomes part of our now.
- 2:44In this moment, we are torturing ourselves over and over and over
- 2:49again. So the past is one of those
- 2:53lovely little things that has to have a bow.
- 2:57Put on it again, not to remember it and use it to your detriment,
- 3:03but remember it and let it go. Just say yes, it's gone.
- 3:06Yes, it's gone. Acknowledge.
- 3:08It's gone. You put a bow on it.
- 3:09You bless it. You say I am putting it away
- 3:12because it no longer puts me in a power position with myself.
- 3:16All it does is tear my belief system apart for the present.
- 3:19All it does is it remove me from being acutely aware of what's
- 3:24happening around me now. Like as I'm standing here and
- 3:27I'm with you, I'm just in the run in the coop.
- 3:30Some of the girls are having breakfast, some of them are
- 3:32already left. The sun is coming up over the
- 3:35trees. The farm is covered with
- 3:37chickens walking all in different areas because they're
- 3:40all out looking for bugs. I can notice how the lighting
- 3:43is. I can hear the sounds, of course
- 3:45it's Celine. I can hear all the birds
- 3:49singing. I can see all the dew on every
- 3:52little piece of grass that's in the sunlight.
- 3:55I can hear like all the the other rooster, my neighbor's
- 3:59rooster. I can hear his goats going.
- 4:01I see every little piece of it because I'm present.
- 4:05I'm with you and I'm talking about it.
- 4:07And it's a feeling of being nowhere else, nowhere else.
- 4:10Now the moment I say, oh, you know, I went to dinner last
- 4:14night. Now all of a sudden I'm back at
- 4:16dinner. I'm right back there.
- 4:18One thought, one little thought. I'm back at dinner.
- 4:20Where did you eat? I ate at a pizza place.
- 4:22What did you have? I had a fig and Brazzuto pizza.
- 4:25Yes, it was good. You know who was there.
- 4:28I can tell every, I can tell you every detail.
- 4:31But instantaneously, when I'm doing that, I have left the
- 4:34farm, so to speak. I have left the farm.
- 4:38I can tell you how I felt. I can tell you all the details
- 4:41of it because I'm no longer on the farm.
- 4:44I'm at the pizza place. So do you see how quickly that
- 4:48can happen? It's just a nanosecond.
- 4:50It's a it's one little tiny synapse that fires off and boom,
- 4:55I'm on a different high highway in my head.
- 4:58The bus is now driving down a different highway and all of a
- 5:02sudden I'm in the past. Now if I'd had a terrible time
- 5:05last night, I could have easily taken that time, talked about
- 5:09that, and taken that time to down the road to hell.
- 5:12I could have said, well, this happened and this happened and
- 5:15this happened and this happened, and I would have been reliving
- 5:17the moment. And that's part of what our
- 5:19problem is. As humans, we relive too many of
- 5:22the moments. We don't handle our business and
- 5:24take care of it and get rid of it if it's something that we
- 5:27should get rid of and we relive it over and over and over.
- 5:31So it's important to remember in the now, in the present, in this
- 5:34moment. This is where everything
- 5:36resides. So work on that.
- 5:40All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 5:42will see you tomorrow. And remember, stay in this
- 5:46moment. Have a blessed day.
- 5:49Bye.
