- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's start without breaking news as we watch the war
- 0:02Speaker 1: with Iran. A ceasefire between Israel and Hasbelah is holding
- 0:06Speaker 1: now after back and forth strikes between them wrapped up overnight.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Look at that.
- 0:10Speaker 1: If you live in the region, this was your view
- 0:12Speaker 1: looking towards the south.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Now.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Lebanon says Israeli strikes killed eighteen. The Israeli military says
- 0:18Speaker 1: four of its soldiers died in those same blasts. The
- 0:21Speaker 1: fighting prompted this warning from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who
- 0:25Speaker 1: said Israel will not tolerate attacks on our soldiers or
- 0:29Speaker 1: our territory, and he says it will exact a very
- 0:32Speaker 1: heavy price from Hezbollah for these attacks. He went on
- 0:36Speaker 1: to write, as I have made clear unequivocally, Israel will
- 0:40Speaker 1: remain in the security zone in southern Lebanon as long
- 0:43Speaker 1: as necessary to protect the northern communities. Close quote. So
- 0:47Speaker 1: let's break this down. CBS News contributor Robert Berger joined
- 0:50Speaker 1: us live from Jerusalem, where this is all the talk today. So, Robert,
- 0:53Speaker 1: what do people in Israel have to say about whether
- 0:55Speaker 1: that ceasefire holds, especially after such intense strikes overnight.
- 1:00Speaker 2: There's enormous skepticism in Israel about this ceasefire. Just you know,
- 1:05Speaker 2: keep in mind that fighting between Israel and Hezbelah has
- 1:09Speaker 2: been going on off and on, with quite a number
- 1:13Speaker 2: of ceasefires in between that simply haven't held since October eighth,
- 1:18Speaker 2: twenty twenty three, a day after the Hamas massacre inside Israel.
- 1:24Speaker 2: The problem now is that you also have Israeli troops
- 1:28Speaker 2: on the ground in South Lebanon. They've moved in because
- 1:32Speaker 2: tens of thousands of Israelis have been moved out of
- 1:35Speaker 2: their homes because of Hezbelah rocket and drone attacks on
- 1:38Speaker 2: the northern border. So you know, the seaspires haven't held,
- 1:43Speaker 2: and it really doesn't take a whole lot to upset one,
- 1:46Speaker 2: which is what we just saw in the past twenty
- 1:48Speaker 2: four hours when Hisbela carried out an ambush against Israeli
- 1:53Speaker 2: troops and killed four soldiers, and then Israel responded with
- 1:57Speaker 2: dozens of airstrikes. So this is a fragile ceasefire to
- 2:01Speaker 2: say the least, and probably we have some rough sailing.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Ahead tricky business. Indeed, is your take the political pressure
- 2:08Speaker 1: on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyaho may have encouraged this?
- 2:12Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, I mean Nettayaho doesn't want this cease fire
- 2:16Speaker 2: because his goal is to cripple his Blah, and Israel
- 2:20Speaker 2: has been making gains on the battlefield against his Belah,
- 2:24Speaker 2: And as I mentioned, you have tens of thousands of
- 2:26Speaker 2: Israelis who have had to flee their homes in northern Israel.
- 2:30Speaker 2: That is not a popular thing. It's not good for
- 2:32Speaker 2: Netta Nyaho politically with an election coming up in a
- 2:35Speaker 2: few months, and so you know, he would like to
- 2:38Speaker 2: cripple the group so that it can't carry out these attacks.
- 2:41Speaker 2: But we've seen a lot of pressure from President Trump
- 2:45Speaker 2: and Vice President Advance just in the past few days,
- 2:48Speaker 2: in which they've harshly criticized Israel for its actions in Lebanon,
- 2:54Speaker 2: accusing Nettayaho of bad judgment and of an excessive use
- 2:59Speaker 2: of force. So that's what Natanyahu in an uncomfortable position.
- 3:03Speaker 2: He's not in a position to say no to Israel's
- 3:06Speaker 2: guardian ally, so he's gone along with this ceasefire reluctantly,
- 3:11Speaker 2: even as Hezbollah continues to pose a threat on Israel's
- 3:16Speaker 2: northern border.
- 3:16Speaker 1: All right, watching it all from Jerusalem, Robert Berger, thank
- 3:19Speaker 1: you so much for taking the time to talk to
- 3:21Speaker 1: US on CBS News twenty four seven. We're also following
- 3:23Speaker 1: this breaking bit of news planned talks between Iran and
- 3:26Speaker 1: the US. They're off for now. Those discussions were supposed
- 3:29Speaker 1: to kick off a sixty day period of negotiations laid
- 3:32Speaker 1: out in that memorandum of understanding that you just saw
- 3:35Speaker 1: President Trump signing at Versailles. The White House has not
- 3:38Speaker 1: said when they plan to reschedule those So let's talk
- 3:41Speaker 1: about that live to the White House and CBS News
- 3:43Speaker 1: correspondent Natalie Brands. But Natalie, Israel has Belah, they've since
- 3:47Speaker 1: agreed to that ceasefire that Robert was just talking about.
- 3:50Speaker 1: But do you see from the White House perspective that
- 3:52Speaker 1: the strikes overnight had anything to do with the delay
- 3:55Speaker 1: between the US and the negotiations on the nuclear front
- 3:58Speaker 1: with Iran.
- 4:00Speaker 3: And read we've seen this play out before that the
- 4:03Speaker 3: flare ups between Israel and Iran backed HESBLA have complicated
- 4:07Speaker 3: these larger negotiations between the US and Iran. And in fact,
- 4:11Speaker 3: the Associated Press was reporting that Iranian officials did not
- 4:14Speaker 3: travel as planned to Switzerland ahead of today, saying that
- 4:18Speaker 3: the fighting in Lebanon must stop. And remember point one
- 4:22Speaker 3: paragraph one of the tentative agreement, the Memorandum of Understanding
- 4:27Speaker 3: said that military operations must be terminated on all fronts,
- 4:31Speaker 3: including in Lebanon. Now. The White House statement, in announcing
- 4:37Speaker 3: that the Vice President would not travel to Switzerland late
- 4:41Speaker 3: last night as planned, said that there you know, the
- 4:44Speaker 3: plans have not been finalized on these upcoming technical talks,
- 4:48Speaker 3: noting that logistics over these negotiations have never been simple
- 4:52Speaker 3: or predictable, but adding quote, we look forward to beginning
- 4:56Speaker 3: technical talks as soon as possible. Unclear again when and
- 5:00Speaker 3: that will be, and we're waiting for an update from
- 5:02Speaker 3: the White House, but knew this hour read. An Iranian
- 5:06Speaker 3: Foreign Ministry spokesperson put out a new statement saying that
- 5:10Speaker 3: consultations are ongoing through mediators regarding the next phase of
- 5:14Speaker 3: these talks, that sixty day window that began earlier this
- 5:17Speaker 3: week according to the White House, and said that the
- 5:20Speaker 3: public would be informed if and when the necessary conditions
- 5:23Speaker 3: for launching negotiations are met. But he also said that
- 5:27Speaker 3: because the MoU was already signed by the President and
- 5:31Speaker 3: the Iranian president, Trump and the Iranian president, that there
- 5:35Speaker 3: is no longer urgency around the meeting in Switzerland. And
- 5:39Speaker 3: said that there is planning underway for a direct meeting
- 5:43Speaker 3: between the two sides, perhaps in the coming day. So
- 5:46Speaker 3: a lot of moving parts to continue to follow.
- 5:48Speaker 1: That's right, And we understand that there's some reporting in
- 5:51Speaker 1: Axios with President Trump. Does that give any sort of
- 5:54Speaker 1: foreshadowing of what's ahead? Natalie?
- 5:58Speaker 3: What was interesting read in this new interview with Axios.
- 6:02Speaker 3: The President acknowledged that he negotiated the deal to keep
- 6:06Speaker 3: the war from turning into a global economic depression. That's
- 6:10Speaker 3: also something he alluded to during his news conference at
- 6:14Speaker 3: the G seven summit. And he was also asked what
- 6:18Speaker 3: he learned from the war and if he has any limits,
- 6:22Speaker 3: and he made kind of a headline grabbing statement, Let's
- 6:25Speaker 3: take a listen.
- 6:27Speaker 2: What have you learned about not just the exercise of power,
- 6:30Speaker 2: but the limits on your power as a result of
- 6:32Speaker 2: the conflict.
- 6:33Speaker 3: There are no limits.
- 6:34Speaker 1: No, no, not I haven't learned that lesson yet.
- 6:37Speaker 3: I know there are, but you know there are no limits.
- 6:40Speaker 1: We defeated them totally militarily.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Now, the statement comes a lot of criticism amid a
- 6:49Speaker 3: lot of criticism from Capitol Hill and bipartisan backlash to
- 6:54Speaker 3: you know, the tentative agreement that's been negotiated so far
- 6:58Speaker 3: in a lot of skepticism over what is going to
- 7:00Speaker 3: happen in the next sixty days during this more complicated
- 7:04Speaker 3: phase two, when discussions begin in earnest on the future
- 7:07Speaker 3: of Iran's nuclear program, the US's desire to curb all enrichment.
- 7:12Speaker 3: You know, some Democratic lawmakers reader calling the war a failure,
- 7:16Speaker 3: and even Republicans are critical about what they know of
- 7:20Speaker 3: this initial agreement so far, particularly the economic relief that
- 7:24Speaker 3: it would deliver to Iran. You know, the White House
- 7:27Speaker 3: argues that that would be based on good behavior, but
- 7:30Speaker 3: there's a lot of skepticism that the next sixty days
- 7:33Speaker 3: will produce a final agreement.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Read all right, Natalie Brand live from the White House.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Thank you so much. Good to talk to you.
