- 0:05lovely morning with mister Andrew Larson. Of course, Andrew. He comes to
- 0:09us from Larsen Home Services. The website Larsenhome Services dot com. That's l
- 0:15A R S O N Home Services dot com. They're telephone number six oh
- 0:20eight five three five forty three forty three. That's five three five four three
- 0:26four three. And Andrew, we're going to be talking about different types of
- 0:29roofing materials this week. But speaking of roofing, and I'm looking at the
- 0:32forecast, I think your guys are going to be busy the next the next
- 0:37few days. We've we've been busy, uh NonStop, But you're right.
- 0:45I think we're going to not have to play frogger with the rain and showers,
- 0:52which we've had to do all year. We are really really good at
- 0:56using weather apps. Let me tell you this, if we and I think
- 1:02I've said this before, but if if we didn't work every day they said
- 1:06there was a chance of rain this year, we would have gotten like two
- 1:07rough stock. So as it is, it's closer to like two hundred roofs
- 1:12have been done so far. By us this year. But yeah, we're
- 1:17it looks kind of clear sailing for for a couple of weeks or so,
- 1:19so that that's good. That's very very good for us. There was somebody
- 1:23way down the road for me that I don't know they had. I could
- 1:26tell when they started the project a couple of days ago they were very the
- 1:32whoever was doing their work, it's some no name what. I didn't have
- 1:34any signs or anything out, but I could tell that they were going to
- 1:38run into problems. And they put tarp over the house overnight and it poured,
- 1:41and gosh, I really really hope that that that held up for him,
- 1:45because gosh, you definitely don't want that. You say they were doing
- 1:49the roof and they had to tarp it. Yeah, they tarped out for
- 1:52the rainstorm. Well, you know, that's a funny story. When I
- 1:53first started doing this, that that's you know, that's like a nightmare for
- 1:57me, Like I have night about that stuff. I mean, we we
- 2:02want to be able to help as many people as we can and get them
- 2:06the best roofs possible. And you pray that the work that you did and
- 2:12your crew did is is going to hold up forever and honestly, like you
- 2:15know, we're not perfect. Things happen, We get calls. I mean,
- 2:19when when you have thousands of roofs that you've put on and tens of
- 2:23thousands of gutters that you've done, things happen. But you know, I
- 2:28believe a true test of a company is when you call when you call me
- 2:30years down the road and say, hey, this heavy rain, like we
- 2:32had a little leak over here, and we come right out and take care
- 2:37of it. Like, those things happen, but it's it's how those things
- 2:40are handled by a contract or how those things are handled by a service for
- 2:45service provider. For me, that that means, that means everything. If
- 2:50it's a well, yeah, I know you get your you get a few
- 2:53years workmanship, and that's it because we hear that from people like it's a
- 2:57few years now, can now you got to pay it? Not for us
- 3:00lifetime workmanship guarantee on everything we do, so I could get into that forever.
- 3:05But but not being able to get a roof done in a day is
- 3:09something that we just won't take a chance on. We have the most amazing
- 3:15roofing crews and always have and if we my roofing manager Jeremy is at his
- 3:20top of he is when it comes to efficiency. Yeah, and knowing his
- 3:24crews and what the I mean. He has reports on how many shingles they
- 3:28can put down in an hour per nailing crew, because there's different nailers on
- 3:34each crew, Like each guy has their own thing that they do. Some
- 3:37guys lay shingles, some guys nail shingles. So when we get to a
- 3:39roof where we say it's like ninety squares, if you know anything about roofing,
- 3:43that's nine thousand square feet. That's a big roof. We can do
- 3:46that in a day. We just make sure that we're going to be there
- 3:49with two crews because we are never going to leave a roof undone overnight for
- 3:53something like that to happen, because that's again, that's what nightmares are made
- 3:58of. For me, what's amazing to me is and I've we've talked about
- 4:00and I've I've I tell everybody I know about you know, the work you
- 4:05guys did at our house, and one of the things I always point out
- 4:09is the efficiency. And that's done for a couple of different reasons. One
- 4:12is, as you mentioned things that would give you nightmares would be gosh forbid,
- 4:15leaving that house exposed and making sure that you plan to have that job
- 4:19done and not have that problem come up. The other thing that that is
- 4:24that I often rave about is the right shingle for the right application and understanding
- 4:30what you're getting in the importance of that whole roofing system. It's more than
- 4:32just what you see. As matter of fact, Andrew, I've learned from
- 4:34you over the years. Oftentimes most of the times, almost always, it's
- 4:39what you don't see which makes the biggest difference. There's a time where,
- 4:42and you know, you go back and watch some old timey movies they use
- 4:45things like straw and other things. That's a roofing material. We're long past
- 4:49that, thank goodness. But the actually they still do. That's roofs in
- 4:51England. Are you serious? Absolutely? Yeah, and they last a very
- 4:56very long time. Really, I learned something. This is many reasons I
- 5:00love talking with you. This is one of them. I learned something new.
- 5:03Let's talk about different types of roofing materials here here in the States.
- 5:10And yeah, if we want to go international, maybe we'll get I was
- 5:14just at a dance competition with my daughters, and we sat down and we
- 5:16were eating and I started talking to this lady and she was from England and
- 5:19asked what I did, and we started talking about roofing, and I started
- 5:23talking about the different types of roofs that are over in London and in England
- 5:27compared to what's over here. And we started talking about fat roofs and tile
- 5:30roofs and all kinds of different stuff. And now today we're going to talk
- 5:32about different types of roofing materials that we use here. Yes, and obviously
- 5:36the most common type that everybody sees is an asphalt shingle with granules on it.
- 5:42Like that is pretty much what That's a pretty standard material. That's what
- 5:48you're going to see on ninety nine percent of every home out there. Okay,
- 5:54there's reasons for that. It's easy to apply, it's easy to cut,
- 6:00so it's an easy roof to lay, it's an easy roof to put
- 6:03on. And you know it's beginning. I say it's the most affordable type,
- 6:09but depends on whose pocketbook you're talking about, right, it can get
- 6:14really expensive. Petroleum based products keep going up and up and up and up,
- 6:17and asphalt shingles and all the accessories that go with them unfortunately keep going
- 6:24up and up and up. But with that being said, it is what's
- 6:28most commonly put on a roof, And I say it usually every time we
- 6:30talk about roofing. It's not really about the shingles. It's about what goes
- 6:33underneath them. It's about your side wall flashing, your roof to wall flashing,
- 6:36step flashing, chimney flashing, so many different types of flashings. But
- 6:42if those flashings aren't done properly, and underlay's aren't done properly, the roof
- 6:46will leak. It is a garan t That's why, especially with us,
- 6:50you got skylights on your house, you have to replace them if we're going
- 6:56to do your roof, because I don't want to get a call or my
- 7:00managers don't want to get a call at midnight during the storm that the skylights
- 7:04are leaking. And it's kind of a common misconception that you can just reflash
- 7:10a skylight and it'll be fine. But I can tell you from experience it's
- 7:14not. They will leak. They're not made to go through a re ruth
- 7:18different other different types of shingles. There's a lot of composite shingles out there
- 7:21nowadays, and there's lots of different brands, and I don't want to get
- 7:25into all of the different brands, but I can get into the main you
- 7:28know, basically what they're made out of. Most of them are made out
- 7:30of recycled materials, which is good plastic bottles, bottle caps, things that
- 7:36we throw away. They can now take and turn into shingles, beautiful shingles.
- 7:43I have a composite shingle on my house called f Wave, And here's
- 7:48what I will talk about. The main difference between most composite composite shingles and
- 7:57what we install, which is f Wave, is the other composite shingles are
- 8:03installed individually, more like a wood shake. If anybody's ever seen a wood
- 8:07shake or a wood shingle go in a house. They're individual little pieces of
- 8:11cedar wood material that are nailed on and they're staggered and they shed the water.
- 8:18Now, the problem with most of these other products is they don't seal
- 8:22down like a regular shingle. That's what's great about an ashole shingle is it
- 8:26actually seals down tight, water tight for the most part, except where there's
- 8:31penetrations and that's where we use flashings. Almost all composite. In fact,
- 8:39all that I know of, all of the composite shingles out there that I
- 8:41know of coming individual pieces. The thing that I don't really like about that,
- 8:46Sean, is that they are completely dependent on a very thick waterproof underlayment
- 8:54to work because water will get underneath them. Wind blown rain will get underneath
- 9:00these shingles, and it requires a very thick and or like rubber membrane type
- 9:05underlayment to protect your home. That's the same with steel shingles. They are
- 9:11not water tight. If you don't have a very steep roof, say a
- 9:16four pitch, even a six pitch, in my mind, it can be
- 9:18a little iffy because that water might not shed off the roof fast enough and
- 9:22can get underneath I've dealt with this from experience, water getting underneath these shingles
- 9:30and it really being a problem now. F Wave. The shingles that we
- 9:33install typically a couple every week. It's not a lot, but they are
- 9:39very expensive. I mean, when it comes to a regular roof, they're
- 9:43doing a roof that they're top of the line. They are not cheap,
- 9:50but they are completely composite there is no fiberglass matting. There are no granules,
- 9:54so you can't have granule loss. The best way to describe it for
- 9:58me is like a really thick floor mat for your car. It's you really
- 10:03can't hurt it as far as I can tell, Like we we will take
- 10:09it, and we'll take a nail and we'll gouge it, and we'll scratch
- 10:11it, and a little heat from heat gun itself heals itself and you can't
- 10:15even tell it was there. But for me, the best part and the
- 10:18reason that we started using the f Wave is that they come in regular bundles
- 10:24of shingles, just like asphalt, so they're they're three feet wide. They
- 10:28install the exact same way as a regular shingle, so we don't need a
- 10:33special underlayment underneath the All we use is the same underlayment that we use on
- 10:37regular shingles, and we nail these right on top and they have a very
- 10:41very strong adhesive so they seal down like regular shingles as well, so we
- 10:48get the same wind rating. They are water, they don't leak right,
- 10:52so we flash everything the exact same way as a regular shingle. They also
- 10:56come with a hail warranty. It's a six year hail warranty. If it's
- 11:01ever damaged by hail for any reason whatsoever, they will replace them. Pay
- 11:05us to replace them for free. There's no need to even talk to your
- 11:09insurance companies. So they're very strong, they're very thick. You can't lose
- 11:13any granules on them. It's really a fantastic option. As far as a
- 11:18shingle goes. Again, you're gonna pay more, But I personally don't really
- 11:24see what could go wrong with these shingles. It's pretty amazing when we talk
- 11:28about the f wave and you talk about all the features, and I also
- 11:31wonder is and I don't know this, but I've got to guess your homeowner's
- 11:35insurance probably really you know, he probably affects your rates lower because we're seeing
- 11:41more and more hail. I mean, this summer has been just not a
- 11:46week goes by where I don't see folks posting photos of not just like little
- 11:50little hail pebbles here and there, like big big chunks of ice falling from
- 11:56the sky. You talk about something that's designed for durability, and amazing thing.
