- 0:00Chapter 11 of Hosea, dear God, please be with us as we read
- 0:04through this chapter and maybe more and please let the Holy
- 0:10Spirit give us wisdom and understanding from this in Jesus
- 0:14name, Amen. God's love for Israel.
- 0:18When Israel was a child I loved him, and out of Egypt I called
- 0:24my son. But the more they were called,
- 0:28the more they went away from me. They sacrificed to the bales,
- 0:33and they burnt incense to images.
- 0:37It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms,
- 0:44but they did not realize it was I who healed them.
- 0:48I LED them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love.
- 0:55So it's some of the things here that stood out to me was that
- 1:00God was calling Israel, but they were turning away from him.
- 1:06And that's something that we can probably all relate to if it
- 1:10takes us a while to turn to God in repentance, that there's been
- 1:14times in our life where God has called us.
- 1:17And in hindsight, we can look back and say, yeah, he was
- 1:20probably calling me, trying to get my attention during those
- 1:23things, but then we ignored him or we said, I'll wait till
- 1:26later. And that's the same thing that
- 1:29Israel has done over and over. And, you know, we're guilty of
- 1:33it, too. And then I find it interesting
- 1:38that, you know, it's the sacrifice to Baal and then
- 1:41burning incense to images. So the whole image thing really
- 1:49goes against the second commandment of God, not to
- 1:52create any graven images, any images of any kind that become
- 1:57something that are a focus of worship or a focus to, yeah, to
- 2:04the worship of God. So none of those should happen.
- 2:07And that's in the second commandment that God gave.
- 2:10And then Baal, we see that Baal also had like child sacrifice.
- 2:13And I, I really do in hindsight now.
- 2:16I mean, I didn't always think this way because I didn't know
- 2:20about it, but it's it's a spiritual battle and it, the
- 2:26spiritual realm influences what actually happens in the world.
- 2:31And ultimately abortion is very demonic and it influences and
- 2:40the world gives different reasons for justifying it.
- 2:45But ultimately, I believe it's still that same spirit that
- 2:50encouraged people to sacrifice their children to bail.
- 2:54And it's the same thing. I mean, most of the abortions
- 2:58are because the child would not be at a good time or not be from
- 3:04somebody, you know, like it's a decision of a person that
- 3:07they're not ready for this. So it's a very selfish decision
- 3:12rather than, you know, letting God deal with it.
- 3:16And, you know, God could decide this person would not come to be
- 3:21or God could say, I have great plans for this person.
- 3:24And ultimately, we should not be taking God's decision into our
- 3:29own hands because we don't know what God's plans are for that
- 3:35person. And God can use bad and turn it
- 3:38to good. So we always need to rely on God
- 3:44for these things. Then I also noticed that it was
- 3:49God who healed them. I mean, he, he was mentioning
- 3:52that he healed them. He gave them kindness and showed
- 3:55them love. So this is, you know, again,
- 3:57God's character is revealed. Even though there's all of this,
- 4:01you know, warnings of bad things and destructive things that are
- 4:06happening. It is ultimately God is, you
- 4:11know, he heals, he gives kindness and love and it's just
- 4:17the rejection. It does say in the Bible that
- 4:21God disciplines his children. So when bad things happen, there
- 4:26could be a a reason for it. If somebody is getting out of
- 4:31line, is getting down a path that could lead to destruction,
- 4:36God may cause something to shake a person up so that they turn
- 4:41back to him. And we see that historically
- 4:44throughout the Bible of how God dealt with people.
- 4:47And we primarily see that through Israel because the Bible
- 4:50is all about Israel. So OK to them I was like the one
- 4:55who lifts a little child to the cheek, so I bent down to feed
- 4:59them. Will they not return to Egypt?
- 5:03And will not Assyria rule over them because they refuse to
- 5:09repent? So he gives the reason why they
- 5:14go back to Egypt. Now.
- 5:15Egypt was the center. There's something weird about
- 5:18Egypt when you think about it. I mean, just think about the
- 5:21pyramids. Think about, you know, they have
- 5:24all of these multiple deities. And I don't know, you can get
- 5:29into the Book of Enoch where he talked about fallen angels.
- 5:33They were the watchers who came to the earth and told mankind
- 5:38things they were not supposed to tell of mankind that God didn't
- 5:42want people to know. And it it is centered around
- 5:47technology, around beautification.
- 5:53There were several different categories, astrology,
- 5:58divination graph, I guess like plant grafting.
- 6:04There's a lot of things that were taught to humans that were
- 6:09listed in the Book of Enoch that were provided to humans by these
- 6:14fallen angels. And then you just think about
- 6:17the complexity of the pyramids and the times that they were
- 6:22built and how did they do that. And it just seems like, well,
- 6:27maybe the Book of Enoch is true and maybe that's how it was, how
- 6:31it happened. So that's speculation.
- 6:33Of course that's not proven, but it just really makes you think
- 6:38about those things. OK, let's go back to scripture.
- 6:44So a sword will flesh in their cities.
- 6:46It will devour their false prophets and put an end to their
- 6:50plans. My people are determined to turn
- 6:54for me. Even though they call me God
- 6:57Most High, I will by no means exalt them.
- 7:01How can I give you up Ephraim? How can I hand you over Israel?
- 7:05How can I treat you like Admah? How can I make you like Zeboyam?
- 7:12Well, this didn't mean a lot to me.
- 7:15So thankfully the study Bible had something.
- 7:18Who were Admah and Zeboyam? Admah and Zeboyam were two of
- 7:23the sinful cities that were destroyed along with Sodom and
- 7:27Gomorrah. And we'll find that in Genesis
- 7:3019 and Deuteronomy turning 29 verse 23.
- 7:34They are recalled here as reminders of the judgement and
- 7:37desolation that follows disobedience to God's command.
- 7:42Now when I think about Sodom and Gomorrah, in fact that's where
- 7:45the name sodomy came from. And then I think about this is
- 7:49kind of appropriate. This is the last day of the
- 7:51month, June 30th, that this is being recorded.
- 7:54And the whole month of June was had been dedicated to Pride
- 7:59month. And what's really, you know,
- 8:03twisted here is that God hates pride.
- 8:07He hates that arrogance and then we are celebrating it as a
- 8:13month. God says that like 2 men lie
- 8:17together is an abomination that's in the Bible and that you
- 8:23know, the sexually immoral will not be in God's Kingdom.
- 8:26And so those are the things it was it's multiple times.
- 8:29So it's not again, this is this is a sin that is not different
- 8:36from all all kinds of sin. All sin separates us from God.
- 8:43So the question is why do we promote or celebrate something
- 8:50that separates us from God? Why?
- 8:54I think it's evil. And I think especially
- 8:57Christians who celebrate this and encourage this are, are
- 9:01blind, first of all, spiritually blind, and they do not know what
- 9:10they are doing. Because if you read the Bible,
- 9:14it doesn't end well for someone who continues in that sin.
- 9:19And there is an opportunity for repentance, an opportunity to
- 9:26break from that. The power of the Holy Spirit can
- 9:30help a person overcome that, but they have to turn to God and
- 9:35they have to be willing to let God do that work within them.
- 9:40And that person has free will. If they choose to allow God to
- 9:45guide them, they can be in God's Kingdom.
- 9:50So we shouldn't celebrate their rebellion towards God.
- 9:56It's evil. It's basically saying, yay,
- 9:58you're not going to make it into God's Kingdom.
- 10:01That's what people are doing who are celebrating Pride Month.
- 10:04And I think that's horrible. And it's it's just, it's not a
- 10:08Christian thing. And I realized that people who
- 10:11do this are just ignorant. They're blind to what the Bible
- 10:15says. But we shouldn't celebrate that.
- 10:19We should, We should absolutely love the people.
- 10:23But just like God does, like God says he loves the people, but he
- 10:27hates the sin, It's, it's the sin that needs to go.
- 10:32That sin separates us from God, that sin keeps us from God's
- 10:36Kingdom. We have to deal with that.
- 10:38And a lot of churches don't want to talk about dealing with sin
- 10:42because people don't want to hear it, because people don't
- 10:45want to feel guilty. It says in the last days that
- 10:48people will have these itching ears to basically hear what they
- 10:51want to hear. And if you search Itching ears,
- 10:54you will find that verse in the New International Version of the
- 10:59Bible. But people in the last days,
- 11:03they don't want to hear the truth from the Bible.
- 11:06They just want to hear something that affirms whatever life
- 11:11people are living. But that's not the truth.
- 11:15So isn't it more compassionate? Isn't it more loving to tell
- 11:19someone the truth in love, to say that I'm telling you this
- 11:24truth because I care about you, I care about your future, I want
- 11:27you to be in God's Kingdom. It's not like it's something
- 11:33judgy, I guess is not the right, the right word for it, because
- 11:38it isn't being judgy on anyone. It's like telling them the truth
- 11:43and being loving towards them. Like pay attention to this, open
- 11:47your eyes, call on God, ask God to show you this, you know, make
- 11:56make changes in your life, but don't try to do it on your own
- 11:59because that won't be successful.
- 12:01You need God. That's why we need to be born
- 12:04again. Jesus said we must be born
- 12:06again. We need the Holy Spirit.
- 12:09And that happens when we use our free will to accept the Holy
- 12:15Spirit from God. Jesus says he receives the Holy
- 12:19Spirit from the Father and gives it to us, and that's being born
- 12:24again. And then our lives begin to
- 12:26change, not as a result of what we do, but as a result of what
- 12:30God does in us. That's why it's not that our
- 12:34actions don't save us. It's our free will that saves
- 12:39us. Because our free will, because
- 12:43of what Jesus did on the cross. So Jesus is the way, the truth
- 12:47and the life, and no one comes to God except through him.
- 12:52No one comes to the Father except through him.
- 12:54So it's by the what Jesus did is he made it possible for us to
- 13:00get into God's Kingdom. But if Jesus's death on the
- 13:03cross was the only thing that ever had needed to happen, that
- 13:06means that every single human being on the earth would be in
- 13:08heaven because Jesus died for all people.
- 13:11But that's not the case. We have to use our free will to
- 13:15accept, to believe what Jesus did, to understand that he gave
- 13:22atonement for our sins. He sacrificed his life for all
- 13:27of us so that we could possibly be in God's Kingdom.
- 13:32Then it's up to us. Then we have to use our free
- 13:34will and say, God, I want your Holy Spirit.
- 13:37I want you to change me. I accept what's in the Bible.
- 13:42Maybe it's hard for me and I struggle with it, but, and it
- 13:46usually is for most people. So Holy Spirit, you know, help
- 13:51me with it. That's what we need to do.
- 13:54That's our portion of it. And then when we receive the
- 14:00Holy Spirit, as long as we stay close to God, we were guaranteed
- 14:05to be in the Kingdom of God. That's what the Bible says.
- 14:09It's, it's us, it's our choice. We can't blame anybody else
- 14:13about where we where we end up because the Bible clearly tells
- 14:17us what certain things will keep us from the Kingdom of God.
- 14:22And most of us probably do those certain things.
- 14:26And so we realized, well, we don't, It doesn't.
- 14:30The outlook doesn't look too good.
- 14:31So we need God to intervene in our lives to change us.
- 14:36And the Holy Spirit does change people.
- 14:39Many people whose share, who have shared their testimony say
- 14:44this. And I know that personally, I've
- 14:47experienced changes in my desires the more I've walked in
- 14:53there. I hate using those terms that
- 14:57people use, but the more that I've read the Bible, the more
- 14:59that I've prayed and communicated with God be a
- 15:03prayer, the more my life has changed and God has done things
- 15:08in my life where I actually want to do things I had no interest
- 15:12in before. Like reading scripture was one
- 15:14of them. Like going to church was another
- 15:16one. I didn't really want to do those
- 15:19things. And over time and getting close
- 15:22to God, I, I do. I mean, I definitely want to be
- 15:27in God's Word and pray. Those are things.
- 15:30Anyway, going back to Scripture, so it says, my heart is changed
- 15:34within me. All my compassion is aroused.
- 15:38This is God speaking. I will not carry out my fierce
- 15:42anger, nor will I devastate Ephraim again, for I am God and
- 15:48not a man, the Holy One among you.
- 15:52I will not come against their cities.
- 15:55They will follow the Lord, and he will roar like a lion.
- 16:01When he roars, his children will come trembling from the West.
- 16:08That's interesting to me that when he roars like God, you
- 16:13know, or Jesus, that you know the lion, the lion of Judah is
- 16:17Jesus. When he roars, his children will
- 16:20come trembling from the West. I thought that was interesting.
- 16:24They will come from Egypt trembling like sparrows, from
- 16:29Assyria, fluttering like doves. I will settle them in their
- 16:34homes, declares the Lord. I do think this is when Jesus
- 16:37returns and also Jesus enters the temple from the east.
- 16:43So there's a lot of focus on coming in from the east.
- 16:47And so, you know, it makes sense when his children will come from
- 16:51the West towards the east. So I believe this is talking
- 16:55about, this is prophecy about when Jesus returns.
- 17:00So now it goes on to Israel's sin.
- 17:01Ephraim has surrounded me with wise Israel with deceit, and
- 17:05Judah is unruly against God, even against the faithful Holy
- 17:09One. And that's the end of Chapter
- 17:1211. So I'll read what the study
- 17:13Bible has about Chapter 11. Why switch the love analogy from
- 17:18husband wife to father son? Hosea did not limit himself to
- 17:23one method of communicating his message.
- 17:25Since Israel had not responded to his analogy of an unfaithful
- 17:30wife, he appealed to history to try to reach the people.
- 17:34Just as a father cares for and nurtures his son, God has taken
- 17:39care of the people of Israel, bringing them out of Egypt and
- 17:43establish them, establishing them in the land of promise out
- 17:49of Egypt. I called my son Matthew saw this
- 17:53as a picture of God's protection of Jesus when God LED Joseph to
- 18:00take, when God LED Joseph to take Jesus to Egypt to escape
- 18:04from King Herod. OK so I at first I kind of got
- 18:09confused on that because I was thinking of the Joseph of the 12
- 18:12tribes. But this is Joseph the husband
- 18:16of Mary to take Jesus to Egypt to escape from King Herod.
- 18:22What are the cords of human kindness?
- 18:25The exact meaning is unknown. Some think it pictures a farmer
- 18:29using ropes to lift the yoke off his oxen so they could eat.
- 18:34Others suggest these cords were used to teach young children to
- 18:39walk. Still others see here a picture
- 18:42of God as Father bending over to lift or perhaps feed a small
- 18:47child who were OK. We read that one.
- 18:55Has this happened yet? It is difficult to know if this
- 18:58prophecy has been fulfilled in its fullest sense.
- 19:02The southern Kingdom Judah did have a well documented return to
- 19:06the Promised land after 70 years of exile.
- 19:09See the books of Ezra and Nehemiah.
- 19:11However, we don't have historical information about a
- 19:14return of the northern Kingdom Israel there.
- 19:18Therefore, we must are this may be a reference to a future
- 19:22reality for God's people. The phrase from the West seems
- 19:27to indicate a return of worldwide proportions.
- 19:32And I think some of that's be started beginning like in 1948
- 19:37when Israel became a nation and people started returning to
- 19:40Israel and they still are returning despite being at war.
- 19:43There's many people that return to Israel.
- 19:47Does God change his mind? Many would say that since God
- 19:50knows all things, he knows he does not change his mind.
- 19:53Yet the Bible frequently speaks of God's mercy in terms of God
- 19:59relenting from threatened judgment.
- 20:02God's intentions, both for blessings and punishment, are
- 20:06often tied to our response. God in His sovereignty can make
- 20:11promises that are conditional, that is dependent upon the
- 20:15obedient response of His people. God's judgments can also be
- 20:20conditional, that is dependent on the continued refusal of His
- 20:25people to repent. God wants us to see Him as a God
- 20:30who cares passionately, passionately for His people, and
- 20:34longs to have a loving relationship with us.
- 20:37To emphasize the depths of God's love for Israel, Hosea spoke of
- 20:42God changing his mind, still looking for some glimmer of
- 20:46response from his people. So that's the end of Chapter 11
- 20:53and we will stop here for today.
