Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Smoking, well, not smoking, but vaping. Disposable vapes are out
- 0:04Speaker 1: from today. Advertising rules are being tight and it's all
- 0:06Speaker 1: about an effort to cut the teenage vape rate of
- 0:09Speaker 1: ten percent. Ben Yoden is Action for Smoke Free twenty
- 0:13Speaker 1: twenty five director with us this morning.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Hey Ben, good morning.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Good to have you on the show. So we're never
- 0:20Speaker 1: actually going to see vapes. If we go into a
- 0:22Speaker 1: diary from today, we're not actually going to see them anymore,
- 0:24Speaker 1: are we No, Well.
- 0:26Speaker 2: The rules are changing to get rid of disposable vapes,
- 0:29Speaker 2: as you say, but also to make them less visible retail,
- 0:34Speaker 2: so particularly in the specialist fake retailers that as of
- 0:40Speaker 2: today you're not supposed to be able to see them
- 0:42Speaker 2: from outside the store or even on their websites as well,
- 0:46Speaker 2: So trying to make them much less appealing from outside
- 0:49Speaker 2: the shops.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Does that actually work because we put cigarettes behind a screen,
- 0:53Speaker 1: remember when we did that? Does that actually stop demand
- 0:56Speaker 1: or is it really just at the end of the
- 0:58Speaker 1: day price that does that?
- 1:01Speaker 2: Well? I think with cigarettes it's been a combination of
- 1:03Speaker 2: lots and lots of things, including pricing, putting out a display,
- 1:06Speaker 2: and making the packages play with vapes we're looking at
- 1:09Speaker 2: something slightly different because we do want them to be
- 1:12Speaker 2: available for adults who's smoke and they're using them to
- 1:15Speaker 2: stop smoking and have appeal compared to a cigarette. But
- 1:19Speaker 2: what we don't want is for them to be marketed
- 1:22Speaker 2: in a way or sold at a price point that
- 1:24Speaker 2: is appealing to young people and people have never smoked
- 1:27Speaker 2: as well. So it's about trying to get that balance right.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Do we have it right? Because the thing is, with smoking,
- 1:33Speaker 1: they put the price up every year, what is it,
- 1:36Speaker 1: ten percent? I think they've paused it, but that's what
- 1:38Speaker 1: made people stop smoking. I thought, oh my god, I
- 1:40Speaker 1: literally can't afford their so eithers have to steal them
- 1:43Speaker 1: or not smoke anymore, whereas with vaping they're not moving
- 1:46Speaker 1: the price.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Right. Well, I think pricing has definitely had a massive
- 1:50Speaker 2: impact with smoking, and actually we're probably the most expensive
- 1:54Speaker 2: country in the world relative to income to buy cigarettes now,
- 1:58Speaker 2: although the city creation at the moment, we still have
- 2:01Speaker 2: smoking very concentrated in our kind of lower income populations
- 2:06Speaker 2: and still much higher rates for Mahdi and Pacific. So
- 2:10Speaker 2: having more affordable, less harmful al turn, it's accessible to
- 2:14Speaker 2: people who are still smoking. I think is still really
- 2:16Speaker 2: really important, but for young people doing things like getting
- 2:20Speaker 2: rid of the disposable baits which are really cheap and
- 2:22Speaker 2: accessible and still have been at kind of pocket when
- 2:26Speaker 2: the price is really five or ten dollars, and just
- 2:29Speaker 2: leaving things that are still cheap than cigarettes, but not
- 2:33Speaker 2: so cheap that they're very easy to buy. I think
- 2:36Speaker 2: it's part of trying to get that balance that we
- 2:38Speaker 2: haven't necessarily had right so far.
