- 0:03welcome back to the Eye Believe Podcast
- 0:05I'm Megan
- 0:06and today our guest is a returning fan favorite
- 0:08we have Leah and Sheri Wernecke with Wernecke Wellness
- 0:11welcome ladies
- 0:13thank you for having us again
- 0:16yes we're so excited that you're here with us today
- 0:18so the episode today we wanna talk about
- 0:22we're going into fall it's about to get really busy
- 0:24it's almost October so
- 0:26what are some ways that we can maybe make a plan
- 0:30before we get into the crazy
- 0:32so that things don't go too terribly crazy
- 0:36as far as our health and wellness
- 0:39so I would say since time is moving very quickly
- 0:43a lot of it is staying ahead of the game
- 0:46and not falling behind
- 0:49into the fall season you know
- 0:51it's full of kids bringing home germs
- 0:53everyone's getting sick
- 0:55and a lot of times when you're doing things naturally
- 0:58if you are behind the game
- 1:00then you're gonna have to play catch up
- 1:01and it's gonna be harder to play catch up
- 1:03yeah so
- 1:04we'd like to really encourage people
- 1:07to stick to the basics
- 1:09so make sure you're eating good food
- 1:11you're getting good sleep when it's dark out
- 1:14I know it's dark in the mornings
- 1:16it's dark at night but get outside some
- 1:18get some fresh air you know
- 1:20open those windows for a little bit
- 1:22air out the house um
- 1:24make sure you're moving I know for me
- 1:27when it gets starts getting cold and dark
- 1:29I would rather curl up on the couch
- 1:31um
- 1:32but get out and get moving
- 1:34and you have to keep your body going
- 1:38or it is gonna get sick um
- 1:40paying attention to your gut health
- 1:42mm hmm things that you're putting in
- 1:45we need to nourish our bodies
- 1:46or like Leah said you know
- 1:48kids are gonna bring germs home
- 1:50anywhere you go you're surrounded by sick people
- 1:53and you're gonna catch everything
- 1:55yep so um
- 1:56we really like sticking to the basics
- 1:59which is a lot harder in the winter yeah
- 2:03absolutely I'm with you
- 2:05if it's dark and cold out
- 2:06I just wanna be on the couch It's so hard to make yourself get up and go sometimes
- 2:12yes well
- 2:13we have started in our family
- 2:15my son lives close to us so every night
- 2:18we all strap on our little lights
- 2:21so we don't get hit by cars
- 2:22and we do a one mile walk every night at 8pm
- 2:27and so I think sometimes
- 2:28having someone that's accountable
- 2:31we'll push you to do it
- 2:33cause last night I did not wanna walk in the dark
- 2:35um we live in the country
- 2:38like I have no idea what's ever gonna be on the road
- 2:40nope
- 2:41but having someone who does it with you
- 2:44makes a big difference and so he said
- 2:47you know we're gonna continue doing this all winter
- 2:50which I'm not sure I'm completely with
- 2:54but I will do it yeah
- 2:56so find a good headlamp
- 2:57and just find a buddy and get outside and keep moving
- 3:01yeah
- 3:02yeah that's so true
- 3:04I used to have a friend that
- 3:05we used to walk in the mornings
- 3:06before we got the kids up for school
- 3:08and in the winter it was dark and
- 3:10I mean
- 3:11like we
- 3:12we would walk in snow boots sometimes
- 3:13and we did it because we
- 3:15because we had that accountability buddy
- 3:17so it's definitely it's
- 3:19it's hard to get started though
- 3:21so let's focus on getting started for a minute
- 3:24what are some healthy habits that we can put in place
- 3:26now before it gets cold
- 3:29before things get crazy
- 3:30cause we've got a little bit of time
- 3:32before we really hit the fall swing
- 3:34yeah I would say setting smaller goals that you can
- 3:39that you know you're gonna stick with
- 3:41because once you can get into the routine
- 3:43of those smaller goals
- 3:45you're going to want to do them more
- 3:47because you're gonna see how good you feel
- 3:49so even with the walking
- 3:50if you're not walking right now
- 3:53going and walking for a mile is gonna feel awful
- 3:55and you're not gonna wanna do it all the time
- 3:57but if you can just get out and even walk for like
- 3:59five to 10 minutes you're gonna start seeing changes
- 4:02and start feeling better
- 4:03so then you're gonna want to do it more
- 4:05yeah I think Leah is right
- 4:07I think it's little things that are obtainable
- 4:11um so even when it comes to eating
- 4:13you know maybe you cut out a certain ingredient
- 4:16you say our household's no longer going to eat sugar
- 4:20and you start finding other ways to
- 4:23you know eat the things you want
- 4:25but in a healthier way you could do that
- 4:29you know another end of it
- 4:30you could start having phones be turned off
- 4:34an hour before everyone goes to sleep
- 4:36because we know that sleep is vitally important
- 4:40so pick something pick something in your diet
- 4:43in your movement in your sleep
- 4:45maybe it's in your mindset
- 4:47maybe it's meditating a little bit more
- 4:50but just I don't know
- 4:51we used to say get better 1% every day
- 4:54and then someone said 1% isn't a lot
- 4:57but I'm like what
- 4:58it is a lot like
- 4:59over 30 days that's 30%
- 5:02but just pick little things that you can do
- 5:05cause I think people make these big grand
- 5:09you know
- 5:10ideas so they have an all or nothing mindset
- 5:13where they think they have to change everything
- 5:15and then they can do it for
- 5:16like one or two days
- 5:17and then they get overwhelmed
- 5:18because not only do they have to
- 5:21be doing everything healthy
- 5:22but then they have to go get presents for the kids
- 5:24or go get this ready for this dinner
- 5:25and then it just falls apart
- 5:29yeah and then you order pizza and eat a box of cookies
- 5:32and then feel guilty the next day
- 5:34like oh no
- 5:34I've abandoned all of my goals
- 5:36yeah and that
- 5:37you know that is the other thing too
- 5:39we talk a lot with our clients
- 5:41is do the meal prepping on the weekends
- 5:44because life is hectic
- 5:45when school starts and kids are sick
- 5:48and you have football games to go to
- 5:50you know everything starts getting crazy
- 5:53yeah and the first thing you do is you grab junk to eat
- 5:56or you order junk to eat
- 5:58we like to keep our fridge packed
- 6:01you like on the weekends
- 6:02we might cook a lot of quinoa
- 6:04or roast a lot of veggies or do things like that
- 6:07so it's in the fridge and that's our go to
- 6:11um we have
- 6:13you know leftovers every night
- 6:15which I know some people can't do leftovers
- 6:17if their histamines are high
- 6:19but many nights we have leftovers
- 6:21cause the day has been very
- 6:22very busy and I haven't had time
- 6:25but we have healthy options then
- 6:28versus what I would prefer to do
- 6:30is just order something not healthy
- 6:33but then we pay the price and we don't feel good
- 6:36yeah so
- 6:37feeling good is a really good motivator
- 6:39to keep doing things a little differently
- 6:44very true I love everything you just said
- 6:46and you're so right about the 1%
- 6:48like it might sound like it's not even worth it
- 6:50because it's not enough to make a difference
- 6:52but that adds up so fast
- 6:56yes it does
- 6:57and even with mindset um
- 7:00we've been using
- 7:01what is the little app we use on our phone
- 7:04do you remember that gives us like
- 7:05a daily I am
- 7:07it's called I am it's an app
- 7:10and it just gives like
- 7:11positive reinforcement to yourself
- 7:14which sounds so silly but sometimes you need them
- 7:17but some days just changing your mindset
- 7:20and seeing things differently
- 7:21that's your 1% better
- 7:24because you know
- 7:25you can eat all the right food
- 7:26and move and do everything
- 7:28but if your mindset needs changed
- 7:30everything you're doing is gonna fail
- 7:33so sometimes it's just you know
- 7:36taking care of the mind and the belief system
- 7:39and things like that and slowly chopping away at that
- 7:42so it's um
- 7:44even walking today Leah was like
- 7:46oh it's so cold this morning
- 7:47and I'm like we have to change our mindset
- 7:50because for the next five months
- 7:52we're just complaining about the cold
- 7:57we're in trouble yeah
- 7:58so it's you know
- 8:00it's figuring out what your greatest need is
- 8:03that you need to change it might be your mindset
- 8:06it might be your diet it might be your movement
- 8:08it's gonna be different for all of us
- 8:10it might be meal prepping
- 8:12it's whatever you need you know
- 8:15you assess that you need to change in your life
- 8:18or in your family's life
- 8:21yeah so instead of saying
- 8:23it's cold we'll say it's refreshing
- 8:27I'm not there yet refreshing
- 8:30it really wakes you up in the morning
- 8:33I know it's it's a whole mind game
- 8:37but I recognize that we're getting there yeah
- 8:42yeah absolutely
- 8:43so and as far as getting there
- 8:47it's gonna start getting colder
- 8:48but we're also going into holidays
- 8:51what do you guys recommend people do
- 8:53for holiday parties
- 8:54is there a way to enjoy foods in moderation
- 8:59without falling off the wagon
- 9:01or are there some healthy swaps we can make
- 9:04what do you recommend
- 9:24so there are definitely healthy swaps that you can make
- 9:27it does take more kind of planning ahead
- 9:29like if you're going to a party
- 9:31you have to kind of think
- 9:32what would I wanna bring that I could enjoy
- 9:34um there's a lot of websites out there that have great
- 9:38even holiday time like swaps
- 9:40but we tend to tell people
- 9:42we have this conversation a lot with many clients
- 9:45is you aren't gonna remember the food
- 9:47that's at the parties but
- 9:48you're gonna remember the time
- 9:49that you spent with the people
- 9:51and so it's going back to that mindset
- 9:53it's the food yes
- 9:56you need to eat food to survive
- 9:58but it's not the important thing
- 10:00during the holiday season
- 10:02during the holiday season
- 10:03it's about spending time with those that you love
- 10:05and making those memories
- 10:06that will last a lot longer than that food will
- 10:09yeah but you can
- 10:11you can make swaps yeah
- 10:13like that is part of the mindset of
- 10:17you know it's not oh
- 10:18I can't eat that it's an empowering like
- 10:22I choose that I'm going to eat something healthy
- 10:26or I choose
- 10:26I'm going to skip that and just enjoy this conversation
- 10:30because I wanna feel a certain way
- 10:33but on the flip side that you can
- 10:36you know if you have a cheat day and you eat something
- 10:39just enjoy it and the next day
- 10:42get back at it yeah
- 10:44or like Leah said
- 10:45make swaps like
- 10:46we no longer we never use sugar
- 10:49and I know never is a strong word
- 10:52but we never use sugar we'll use local honey
- 10:56we'll use organic maple syrup
- 11:00but that is a choice we made
- 11:03because I just I don't want it in my body
- 11:05if I eat sugar I hurt the next day
- 11:08so when I go to a party I choose
- 11:12I would rather feel good tomorrow morning than eat that
- 11:15it's almost like that food is evil to me
- 11:19you know but you can make it
- 11:21you know with maple syrup
- 11:22like Leah makes cinnamon rolls often
- 11:25and they're healthy she uses coconut oil
- 11:28she uses maple syrup or honey
- 11:29we use some you know
- 11:31berries or apples or pears
- 11:34she makes it with sourdough
- 11:36so it's not like we never eat anything good
- 11:40we just do a little bit extra work
- 11:42that what we eat is nourishing our bodies
- 11:45and not tanking us yeah
- 11:47but I do think like
- 11:49society has turned food into this
- 11:53I don't know like
- 11:54we feel deprived if we can't do something
- 11:57but I wanna encourage people
- 11:59feel empowered of the decisions you're making
- 12:02to not eat certain things
- 12:04because I don't know
- 12:06we were listening to a song
- 12:07and it was like my body is a vessel
- 12:09and I thought yes
- 12:10like your body is a vessel
- 12:13and what do you fill it with
- 12:14you're gonna fill it with things
- 12:15that make you feel good
- 12:18versus leave you depleted and awful
- 12:20and so with the holidays I mean
- 12:23we do holiday dinners we have snacks and sweets
- 12:26but we just choose a different route
- 12:29than what society typically chooses
- 12:32if that makes sense
- 12:34that's a great great way to look at it
- 12:37I actually
- 12:37I found a recipe the other day that I can share
- 12:40cause it's so simple it was just um
- 12:43peanut butter powder and apple sauce
- 12:46and you rolled it together into balls
- 12:47and dipped it in chocolate
- 12:48and it was like a Reese's dupe
- 12:51yes
- 12:52my teenagers were so like
- 12:56it was crazy because I actually set it up
- 12:59I was like remember guys
- 13:01these are healthy like
- 13:02because I didn't want them to be like Ew
- 13:03it's gross so I was like
- 13:05remember these are healthy
- 13:06like it was
- 13:08yeah
- 13:12wow that's amazing yeah
- 13:14and um
- 13:15my oldest ate one of them and he was like
- 13:19these are amazing like
- 13:20why are you saying this and I was just like
- 13:22oh thank god
- 13:23cause they were good but
- 13:25you know when you're
- 13:26cause your taste buds do change
- 13:27and when you're used to a certain you know texture or taste
- 13:32and then it's different it takes a while before you really start
- 13:35liking the different
- 13:37yes
- 13:38yeah and you can get there but it takes a minute
- 13:42yeah it does
- 13:42well that's
- 13:43we always make a we call it fudge
- 13:46but it's coconut oil uh huh
- 13:49local honey and cacao
- 13:52and it makes a fudge you can add things to it
- 13:55we've added like
- 13:56pumpkin seeds or walnuts or
- 13:58you can add anything to it
- 14:00but it's healthy and it tastes like fudge
- 14:03yeah it's really good
- 14:05we've gotten to the point
- 14:06I have a two year old grandson
- 14:08and he will even ask if I give him a snack
- 14:10he'll say Mimi
- 14:11is this a healthy snack and if I say yes he will eat it
- 14:17he knows so
- 14:18yeah but see
- 14:20you don't you don't have to deprive yourself
- 14:22you just have to look a little deeper
- 14:25yeah and if you can save yourself from being sick
- 14:28you're gonna make up time anyway
- 14:32looking up you know
- 14:33look up a few recipes that are healthy
- 14:35so that you aren't sick for
- 14:37you know some of these sicknesses last a couple weeks
- 14:40yeah it's
- 14:41it's very true and like
- 14:43you know
- 14:44just in the same vein of the healthy swap recipes
- 14:47if you're on Instagram or TikTok
- 14:48whatever you're on
- 14:50the algorithym will show you what you're looking at
- 14:52and if you just type that in and watch a couple
- 14:55you'll get a ton and you'll get so many great ideas
- 14:59um I don't know
- 15:00it's kind of a viral one
- 15:01you guys have probably all seen this one
- 15:03where you take a date
- 15:04and you stuff it with a pecan or some kind of a nut
- 15:07and a almond butter
- 15:09and then you dip that in chocolate
- 15:10and it's supposed to be like a snickers
- 15:11those are amazing
- 15:12I think they taste better than a real snickers
- 15:14they're so good
- 15:16they are yes
- 15:18and kids will eat those too
- 15:20yeah my kids love those
- 15:24definitely like those
- 15:25those recipes are out there for free
- 15:28you can go find them for sure
- 15:30mmm hmm I will say though
- 15:33we tell people it is okay to get sick though
- 15:36yeah I mean
- 15:37getting sick is a part you know
- 15:39of your body's defense system
- 15:40it gets sick it fights it
- 15:43and then you get stronger
- 15:46so I don't want people to think too like oh
- 15:48if I do everything if I get sick
- 15:50I've done something wrong
- 15:52we get sick I mean
- 15:54it's just part of living
- 15:57but I will say that
- 15:58when you are fighting a sickness in a healthy way
- 16:01you know you have to kind of plan ahead
- 16:03yep of things you take
- 16:05um we do make like
- 16:07a fire cider we do make garlic and honey
- 16:13which is very simple it sounds disgusting
- 16:16I know but you chop up garlic
- 16:19submerge it in honey
- 16:22garlic is an amazing food
- 16:24and the honey is amazing so
- 16:26you have two foods that are highly beneficial
- 16:29that you can take often
- 16:32it's things like that that do take preplanning
- 16:35the fire cider I think it's six weeks
- 16:38you can look up a recipe
- 16:39fire cider recipes are all over the place
- 16:42yeah um
- 16:43but there are things you can do ahead of time
- 16:46so that when you are sick
- 16:47you have like
- 16:48an arsenal of things to help you
- 16:52what do you do with the honey and garlic
- 16:54do you just eat like
- 16:54a spoonful of it together
- 16:57yep you do
- 16:59yeah it sounds gross
- 17:01it sounds gross
- 17:02and sometimes you have to put it on something
- 17:04like I think we've put it on eggs before
- 17:06yeah I mix it in my eggs
- 17:09yeah
- 17:10but a lot of people I mean
- 17:12there's a lot of people who just swallow garlic
- 17:15I can say sometimes I swallow it
- 17:17I'll take the honey and the garlic
- 17:19and put it in my mouth and then take a sip of water
- 17:21and almost take it like a pill
- 17:23ok
- 17:24which is a little gross sometimes but
- 17:28it does work yeah
- 17:30but the fire cider we really like
- 17:33I mean you can use it like a salad dressing because you
- 17:37you put all of your ingredients in a big container
- 17:40and then you pour apple cider vinegar on it
- 17:44so it is apple cider vinegar based
- 17:47and we use it as a salad dressing
- 17:50and if we're sick then we we take it often
- 17:55but it's yeah
- 17:56it takes some time I just made mine the other day
- 17:59it's in a huge container yeah
- 18:02and I'll probably make more
- 18:03because there are people in my life who don't make it
- 18:05and when they get sick they come to me so
- 18:09that's smart so I've seen fire cider a few times
- 18:12and I kind of did want to make it
- 18:14and then when I saw Leah post
- 18:15that you guys made it the other day
- 18:16I got very excited casue I thought oh
- 18:18I was very excited to talk to you guys about it
- 18:22do you have a favorite version of the recipe
- 18:25that we can link or do you just kind of make what up
- 18:28like do you add what's on hand no
- 18:31I buy we always have to buy
- 18:33there are many different recipes out there
- 18:35um
- 18:37the one that we just did we added cranberries to it
- 18:40which I think that's the first year
- 18:42first time that we've ever done that
- 18:44but it's typically you add like horseradish onion
- 18:48jalapeno garlics
- 18:49jalapenos oranges
- 18:52I there is a whole bunch of turmeric
- 18:55black pepper ginger yeah
- 18:58this one I made I added a bunch of herbs
- 19:00the only one year we made it and added rose hips
- 19:06I it was like Mexican rose hips
- 19:08that I read it was disgusting
- 19:10so that I would encourage people not to use
- 19:14if you see the recipe
- 19:17but it is you know
- 19:18it's just chalk full of things that are antimicrobial
- 19:21antiviral antibacterial
- 19:23anti everything bad that could be in your body
- 19:27and so it's very potent yeah
- 19:31and I don't know why we only make it in the winter
- 19:34because we like the taste of it
- 19:36yeah um
- 19:37but I think when you're stuck inside
- 19:40you know it is more for when you are sick
- 19:43but it could be used all the time
- 19:45but yeah
- 19:45I encourage you
- 19:46make it now and let it sit for about six weeks
- 19:51um
- 19:52in the honey and garlic you could make two
- 19:55let that sit for a little bit
- 19:57but things like that like I said
- 19:59make ahead of time yeah
- 20:00um
- 20:02there's different homeopathics
- 20:04you can buy ahead of time cause what we find
- 20:06when you're trying to be healthy
- 20:09most box stores don't carry healthy versions of things
- 20:13when you get sick some of them do carry the oscillococcinum
- 20:17that's really good yeah
- 20:19for when you start to feel symptoms of
- 20:21like any sort of flu
- 20:23you take that on the first sign of the symptom
- 20:26so some places do have that
- 20:28but a lot of the others they yeah tend to not have
- 20:33yeah
- 20:35what what do you guys think about um
- 20:37like compresses do you use those at all
- 20:40you is it like a Castor oil compress
- 20:45I I used it a lot on my chest
- 20:50if I can feel stuff building in my chest
- 20:52then I'll put it on my chest and do that
- 20:54you can mix different essential oils with it too
- 20:57um to help open up the airways
- 21:00I think
- 21:00peppermint or eucalyptus is really good for that
- 21:03and then we put a cotton T-shirt over it
- 21:06and sleep with it or keep it on all day
- 21:09a lot of people though
- 21:10use Castor oil like
- 21:12over your liver or for digestive issues
- 21:16I use it I use it probably about three times a week
- 21:19I just put Castor oil over my liver
- 21:21over my digestive area and I sleep like that
- 21:25um it's really good at helping the body to detoxify
- 21:30so that's what Leah said when she gets a cold
- 21:32she puts it on her chest um
- 21:34the other thing that we do utilize a lot is a red light
- 21:40we use loom box
- 21:41there's so many different ones out there
- 21:43you just have to do your research
- 21:45I know loom box is good so I know I can say that one
- 21:48but it's just a little rectangular red light
- 21:52and so you can put it on your chest
- 21:56for our little one
- 21:57I put it on his back when he starts feeling raspy
- 22:00and that red light just helps
- 22:02you know to fight whatever is going on
- 22:07love that awesome
- 22:08I actually I did get a red light
- 22:10and then um
- 22:11used it for a little while
- 22:12and then uh
- 22:13it's been collecting dust
- 22:14for a while so thanks for bringing that up
- 22:17cause I will I will get it out and start using it again
- 22:20um yeah
- 22:53so those are some really really great tips ladies
- 22:56thank you so much is there anything else that
- 23:00just as far as like seasonal um
- 23:03tips when it's winter and it's icky and it's yucky
- 23:06and we're just not feeling ourselves
- 23:10so I would say with that one
- 23:12focusing on gut health cause
- 23:15there is a direct connection
- 23:16from your brain to your gut
- 23:18so really kind of fueling your gut
- 23:21making sure you're putting good things in
- 23:23to help support gut health
- 23:24that's one way another way is
- 23:28making sure you're getting sunlight in your eyes
- 23:29first thing in the morning
- 23:31when we do get that sunlight in our eyes
- 23:33at the start of the day
- 23:34it signals so many cellular functions
- 23:37and tells our body it's time to start waking up
- 23:40when we're exposed to artificial light
- 23:41first thing in the morning
- 23:42it makes our body think that it's basically
- 23:45halfway through the day already
- 23:46which can kind of put us in that slump
- 23:48because our circadian rhythm is off
- 23:50yeah
- 23:51so some things you can do with that is even wearing
- 23:54we hear about blue blockers all the time at night
- 23:58you can actually wear them in the morning also
- 24:01until the sun comes up because that was always my issue
- 24:05I kept hearing get sun in your like
- 24:06or yeah
- 24:07get light in your eyes I'm like
- 24:09but it's not even light out until I
- 24:11I swear like
- 24:128 o'clock at night I've already been
- 24:14or in the morning excuse me
- 24:17so you can wear blue blockers in the morning
- 24:20mm hmm so that the artificial light that we have
- 24:23isn't messing up your body
- 24:25and then I think connection is so big
- 24:28I feel like we're becoming more isolated in the world
- 24:33so it's kind of stepping out
- 24:35making connections laughing
- 24:38enjoying things
- 24:40they make the winter more doable
- 24:42and I know that it's hard
- 24:44I know for me my kids are grown and out of the house
- 24:48and I need a house full of people
- 24:51but we know connection makes everything better
- 24:56so reach out you know
- 24:57make some connections that you might not otherwise do
- 25:00but chances are
- 25:01that person is in desperate need of connection too
- 25:05and I think that really helps in the winter too
- 25:09you know to help with that
- 25:10like season disorder that a lot of people feel
- 25:13yeah that's such a great tip
- 25:16I do feel like that's a huge part of it
- 25:17and I'm glad you mentioned the blue light blockers
- 25:20because that is also my issue
- 25:22it's dark already I mean we get up
- 25:25when it's dark now and it's still september
- 25:28I know It's just gonna get worse
- 25:30yes yep
- 25:31yes yeah
- 25:32we'll be wearing those glasses
- 25:34three hours in the morning three hours at night
- 25:37yeah but what a great tip
- 25:39um that's wonderful
- 25:41well ladies
