Transcript
- 0:09Welcome to Sorbet City News. I'm lead
- 0:12anchor Jerry Garcia. Breaking news.
- 0:15Dilly Dunker's, renowned ice cream maker and
- 0:18leader of one of the most globally recognized brands,
- 0:21has announced his retirement. With the nearing
- 0:24of his company's 50th anniversary comes an
- 0:26even bigger announcement. He's planning a
- 0:29final farewell and passing the company on to
- 0:32one lucky kid. Who will that kid be?
- 0:35Well, that's the news story we will be adamantly
- 0:38following in this coming day. In a seemingly
- 0:40revolutionary PR move, the Ice Cream
- 0:43Satisfactory has packaged five silver
- 0:46coins into randomly chosen Dilly Dunkers
- 0:49frozen treats distributed throughout stores and
- 0:52restaurants in Sorbet City. Any child or
- 0:55teen who finds a silver coin is admitted
- 0:58not only a once in a lifetime tour of the
- 1:00Dillydunkas factory, but also has a chance
- 1:03at being the lucky recipient of the entire
- 1:06corporation all assets
- 1:09and set in a place of leadership to manage
- 1:12all future endeavors of the ice cream
- 1:15empire. Who will the lucky five be? And
- 1:18which one will quickly become the richest kid in the
- 1:20world overnight? Well, that
- 1:23remains to be seen, but when it is revealed, you
- 1:26know, you'll hear it here at SCN. I'm
- 1:29Jerry Garcia. Now on to the weather.
- 1:35Alright everybody. Welcome to another episode of Session Zero
- 1:38Heroes. We are doing a one shot that is vaguely
- 1:40inspired by uh, Willy Wonka in the Chocolate
- 1:43factory and kind of celebration of the Wonka
- 1:46prequel movie that's coming out, um, probably about at the same
- 1:49time as these episodes are being released. Once
- 1:51again, welcome. I'm Skyler, usually the
- 1:54dungeon master. We did do one, uh, one shot so far
- 1:57with Cameron, who's here with me here in the studio. But I'm going to go
- 2:00through everybody else and kind of introduce them, uh, and then
- 2:03have them introduce their characters. We'll be playing kids
- 2:06on bikes today, uh, which is
- 2:09a fun, very simple system
- 2:11for a kind of like, usually it's used
- 2:14for kind of like a Stranger Things feel, um, of
- 2:17things. But right now we're using it for my
- 2:19homebrew campaign that I've written called Dilly Dunkers Ice
- 2:22Cream Satisfactory. Um,
- 2:26uh, we can start on my right with Cameron.
- 2:29Cameron, you've uh, been on the show a few times. Pretty
- 2:31much every session or anything that we've done, you've probably been
- 2:34on it.
- 2:35People are probably sick of me by now.
- 2:36That's true. They're like this guy again. Um,
- 2:39well, welcome back to another show. Um, tell us a
- 2:42little bit about the character you're going to be playing.
- 2:44My character's name is
- 2:47Julian Partner. He is a fresh teen.
- 2:5013 fresh teen. Fresh Teen just became
- 2:53a teenager just a couple of weeks ago.
- 2:55Sounds like a compliment, dude. You're a fresh
- 2:57teen?
- 2:58Yeah, that's what his parents tell
- 3:00him. So um,
- 3:03his big trait is he's kind of dorky.
- 3:06And by kind I mean he's very dorky. He, uh, just
- 3:09hangs around at the school playing checkers and
- 3:12chess in both clubs. That he started.
- 3:14Uh, and for, uh, the most part, what he
- 3:17does is he walks around his school and he talks to people and he
- 3:20tells them about his family's business, which
- 3:23is the local Cracker Barrel.
- 3:25Okay.
- 3:25Uh, and he hands out vouchers. Uh,
- 3:28just constantly has vouchers and he hands it out to everyone.
- 3:31And, uh, anyone is a
- 3:34sale in his eyes. Uh, and then in
- 3:37his free time after school, he just hangs out in that Cracker Barrel
- 3:40gift shop and he just challenges other kids to games
- 3:43of checkers.
- 3:43Oh, right on. So here's my question. Uh, do his parents
- 3:46get sick of the fact that he hands out these vouchers? Because they're like,
- 3:49yeah, maybe it's a sale, but also it's like they're getting discounts
- 3:52that normally they wouldn't have gotten.
- 3:53They give him the vouchers.
- 3:55Oh, okay. That's intentional.
- 3:56Is intentional. Okay.
- 3:58It's part of the overall business.
- 3:59A lady I work with does that for bum guards all the time.
- 4:02Shop at Bumgars.
- 4:03Here's your bum guards now.
- 4:06They want you to that's Julian. That's Julianne.
- 4:09Okay.
- 4:09Cracker Barrel.
- 4:10Yeah. Awesome. All right. If you're unfamiliar with Cracker
- 4:13Barrel, I think it's like full us, right? I don't think it's like yeah,
- 4:16that's.
- 4:16Pretty much full us.
- 4:17It's all around.
- 4:17I've been around here everywhere but here.
- 4:21Everybody wants one.
- 4:23Randomly bring up bumgars. I had no clue what that
- 4:26was till I moved here.
- 4:27Really? They don't have that in Sioux Falls?
- 4:29They don't have it anywhere I've been
- 4:31to but Iowa.
- 4:33Uh, it's three generations of value. You can count
- 4:36them.
- 4:37The coupon she gives you.
- 4:41Awesome. All right, so one more time. What was your character's name?
- 4:43Julian Pardner.
- 4:44Julian partner. All right, perfect. Um,
- 4:47awesome. And one thing that I want everybody to
- 4:50keep, uh, in mind as we're going through each of these characters. So one of the kind of
- 4:53cool, fun elements of this entire game
- 4:56system is that you guys kind of help me create the world
- 4:59and even help each other with your characters. And one
- 5:02way that we do that is at the end of everybody introducing who they are
- 5:05in their characters, I'm going to have each of you, um,
- 5:08kind of give a rumor or some kind
- 5:11of gossip or just something that you feel like your
- 5:13character knows about each of the other characters.
- 5:16Um, I've got a list. If you're kind of running out of ideas or you're not
- 5:19really 100% sure on an idea for something, I've got a list that
- 5:22I can roll on. Um, to give you kind of a question
- 5:25prompt of how does your character feel about this other
- 5:28character in this kind of tone or whatever the case?
- 5:31And then that way it gives you something to answer. So that'll kind of help out a little
- 5:34bit. Um, but as you're listening to each person introduce
- 5:36their character, kind of keep in mind what your character might think or know
- 5:39or allegedly know about them. It doesn't have to be true.
- 5:42Um, when you hear a rumor about
- 5:45your character, think about, do I want this to be
- 5:48true or not be true? If it is true,
- 5:51that's kind of the simple answer. Um, but if it's something that you
- 5:54don't think is true for your character, why do you think that rumor
- 5:57has kind of started going around about you? Like, what did you do to
- 6:00kind of spark that? Um, even if it's not
- 6:03necessarily factual. So, just something to keep in mind.
- 6:06So jumping over to Ben. We got Ben Scaturo. Did
- 6:09I say that right?
- 6:09I said that with a fun way.
- 6:11Ah, okay. Very cool. Very cool. Uh, Ben is one
- 6:14of my coworkers. Really excited to have him on the show. This is the first time
- 6:17we have Ben on the show. Um, so that's exciting. Ben,
- 6:20tell me a little bit about your character.
- 6:22Yeah, um, we have a
- 6:24teenager. His name is Kieran
- 6:27O'mulligan. He is a Irish
- 6:30American. Um, a
- 6:33bit stocky build, curly,
- 6:36um, reddish brown hair. Uh, some
- 6:39hazel eyes with hints of jade.
- 6:41Um, a couple small scars over his
- 6:44uh sorry, not the right the left
- 6:47eye. Yeah. Um,
- 6:49and has a few scars and patches of
- 6:52burn scars on his hands.
- 6:54Um, yeah, he is
- 6:57someone who, um, attends his high
- 7:00school. He's a part of the culinary club
- 7:03there, and actually is the unofficial
- 7:06ta of the, uh,
- 7:08homec and culinary teacher
- 7:12in school. Um, whenever
- 7:15he's not at class, he's either, uh, with
- 7:17his choir director, and
- 7:20there's usually for a
- 7:23what would it be? An ensemble. An after school
- 7:26ensemble. Either the barbershop choir or the chamber
- 7:29choir. Um, and beyond that, if
- 7:32he's not at anywhere school, either curricular or
- 7:34extracurricular, he's at home helping
- 7:37around the house when his parents are at work, uh, taking care
- 7:40of his little sister, Avery.
- 7:42Oh, very cool.
- 7:42Very cool.
- 7:43So he's sort of a Bardic chef. Oh,
- 7:45yeah, he's a singer.
- 7:47And that's a good d d way of putting it.
- 7:50Yeah, absolutely. That's awesome. Fantastic.
- 7:53All right, so we got Kieran o'mulligan. He
- 7:55sings, he cooks, uh, he bakes.
- 7:58And also, I remember from your character sheet, that's how he got
- 8:01like, the majority of his scars on his body.
- 8:03You can see on the fingertips and on the palms a
- 8:06bit. That probably came from his
- 8:09earlier days of cooking bad burns, if he
- 8:13might have grabbed a pan that was too hot still.
- 8:15And the quick realization, the necessity of
- 8:18oven mitts.
- 8:19Oh, yeah.
- 8:20Fantastic. Awesome. All right, so we got
- 8:23Kieran o'mulligan. Uh, finally, last but not
- 8:26least, we got Bart Miller. Bart Miller, also brand new to the
- 8:28show. Glad to have you, Bart. Bart is the president of the Sioux City
- 8:31Tabletop Gamers. Uh, which is actually where we're
- 8:34at right now, is one of our free game day events. Uh, we're kind
- 8:37of recording live from there more or less not airing it
- 8:40live, but just recording it from the event. Um,
- 8:43and so it's great to be here. Great to have you. Bart. Bart,
- 8:45who in the world are you playing?
- 8:47Um, I'm playing Philip Dipple. I'm twelve years old. I think I'm
- 8:50the youngest.
- 8:51I think you are.
- 8:52I was, uh, raised by my grandmother after my
- 8:55parents died, and I've gotten most of my
- 8:58habits and mannerisms from her, including, uh,
- 9:01she only let me watch really old, like me TV
- 9:03type TV shows. So that's kind of my reality.
- 9:06Nice.
- 9:06And it also is the source of,
- 9:08uh, my obsession with vintage napkin, uh,
- 9:12rings, which I am always seeking out to
- 9:15enhance my collection.
- 9:16Got to have those napkin rings. Yes.
- 9:18And, uh, my main goal in the game is I'm
- 9:21trying to hang out with older kids to increase my popularity. I just want
- 9:24everybody to like me. Uh, it's hard to be
- 9:27liked when you collect vintage napkin
- 9:29rings.
- 9:31You know a place that has good vintage napkin
- 9:34rings? Cracker Barrel. Just saying.
- 9:37That's probably true.
- 9:39He goes to the gift shop. They're not
- 9:42exactly vintage at that point.
- 9:43I think they're mass produced.
- 9:45Hey, they look vintage.
- 9:48Uh, I am terrified of free ranging
- 9:51goats after the pumpkin patch
- 9:54incident, which we will not discuss.
- 9:56So what's the pumpkin patch incident?
- 10:00Please don't bring that up.
- 10:01Just start shaking.
- 10:02There's actually a perfect opportunity to replay the
- 10:05pumpkin patch instance in this one, but we'll
- 10:08get to that later. Um, awesome. Fantastic.
- 10:11Um, really quick, I'd actually like to go through and just double check on
- 10:14everybody's. So your strengths, your weaknesses,
- 10:18your fears, and probably your favorite
- 10:21ice cream, which I had all of you kind of come up with. So, Cameron,
- 10:24go through those for me. For, uh, julian.
- 10:26My strengths are I'm easy going, but I'm also a
- 10:29little rebellious because I'm willing to take
- 10:32any leaps and bounds for my family's shop.
- 10:36My weakness is I'm very clumsy.
- 10:39I noted here, uh, I get stuck a lot in
- 10:42random items at my parents shop and they get mad at
- 10:45that's why I'm stuck to the gift shop. And I used to
- 10:47help serve oh, okay, not anymore.
- 10:50I got you're clumsy.
- 10:51Dropped way too many plates. Don't let them touch your nap
- 10:54or the gift shop. Uh, and my other thing is I'm very
- 10:57dogmatic, uh, for the Cracker
- 10:59barrel.
- 11:00Right, that makes sense.
- 11:02And my weakness is, uh, butterscotch blast
- 11:04offs, which is a custom butterscotch
- 11:07vanilla ice cream that has marshmallow chunks in it.
- 11:11And then what was your fear?
- 11:13Oh, I'm afraid of clowns.
- 11:15Okay. Classic.
- 11:15A classic.
- 11:17Awesome. All right, jumping over to Kieran.
- 11:20Give me kind of a rundown of the internal side of your character.
- 11:23Yeah, much, um, like a little bit like
- 11:25I can't remember. What was your character's name?
- 11:28Julian.
- 11:28Julian.
- 11:29I've heard it so many times. In one
- 11:32ear, out the other. Um, much like Julian,
- 11:35uh, Kieran is a rebellious
- 11:38teen, but he is also, uh,
- 11:40protective. He has his younger sibling that
- 11:43he also has been, ah, protective of
- 11:46most, uh, his life. So it just comes naturally
- 11:49for him. Uh, however, the Irish
- 11:51stoicism can come off a little bit of,
- 11:54uh, blunt and patronizing to most
- 11:57people. Um, he's
- 11:59intense. Not intense.
- 12:02More of he can feel
- 12:05just it can be
- 12:08the bluntness. He might be giving you
- 12:11a compliment, but how blunt it is and
- 12:14how he sounds a little bit sure makes it also
- 12:17sound very patronizing as, uh
- 12:19okay. And he is cripplingly afraid of
- 12:22bees.
- 12:23Okay. Hey, I can actually relate to that as somebody with a bees
- 12:26allergy, like.
- 12:26He'S allergic or he's just afraid of him, um,
- 12:29terrified. Anything that looks like a bee, a
- 12:32wasp, a hornet.
- 12:35A fly that looks.
- 12:36A little big, a, uh, fly that's a little big and a little
- 12:39yellow.
- 12:40I know that fear. I've experienced that before, too, my
- 12:42whole life. Yes.
- 12:44Are you also allergic to bees?
- 12:46I don't think so, at least.
- 12:47Okay.
- 12:48Yeah, you're just afraid of them.
- 12:49Oh, terrifying. That's what they tell me is like oh, yeah.
- 12:52Usually you find out that you're allergic by it.
- 12:56Allergic. I've never been stung, but I grew up in
- 12:59Texas, where they had a crazy amount
- 13:02of hornet nest everywhere.
- 13:04Okay.
- 13:05So having a backyard back
- 13:07then and growing up with having, like, a wasp
- 13:10hole or a hornet hole in your backyard just running around, you
- 13:13step one random place, and then it's just a.
- 13:16Horde of dangerous stinging
- 13:19things.
- 13:19And that can change as you age. Like, my uncle
- 13:22was never allergic to beasties his whole life. Now he has to carry a little
- 13:25pen around because one beast has been stung, and it's really dangerous.
- 13:28So you're never safe. That's important for you to know that.
- 13:31Does it work? You're afraid of them?
- 13:32Can you be allergic and then I.
- 13:34Don'T know, because that'd be great. You can lose allergies
- 13:37evolve out of yeah.
- 13:38Yeah. Okay. All right. Well, that would be awesome.
- 13:41All right. Bart, you mentioned that you had goats as your fear. What about
- 13:44all, uh, the other little significant bits and bobbles from your
- 13:47character?
- 13:48So I am, uh, wealthy
- 13:51because of all the life insurance money from my parents
- 13:53passing.
- 13:54I mean, not nice.
- 13:56Yeah. Always have grandma
- 13:58spoils me with lots of spending money at all times.
- 14:02And, uh, that is part of I'm going to try to flex that to move
- 14:04up in popularity. And I've also
- 14:07adopted a lot of, uh, grandma's
- 14:09superstitions.
- 14:11Okay.
- 14:12Um, yeah, now,
- 14:14um, my favorite is the, uh,
- 14:16sugar free, citrus only popsicles.
- 14:19Grandma would not let me eat things with additives or
- 14:22artificial colors and stuff.
- 14:23So it's not because there's, like, an actual health reason. It's just she just
- 14:26said that's the.
- 14:27Only thing I've ever had.
- 14:28Really?
- 14:29I just realized I forgot to say my flavor.
- 14:31Yeah. What's your favorite flavor kit Kat cookie dough. Oh, yes. The Kit
- 14:34Kat cookie dough. Um, so each one of these
- 14:37ice creams all come from the Dilly Dunkers
- 14:40company. And each one of them will probably make some sort of
- 14:42appearance one way or another, uh, as we jump into
- 14:45things. But all things considered, that's pretty much everything for
- 14:48characters. Now we just got to come up with those rumors about each one of the
- 14:51characters. So let's start with Julian,
- 14:54uh, Cameron's character.
- 14:56Uh, Ben, can you give me
- 14:59a rumor that you've heard? Whether it be true
- 15:02or just something well, I guess you wouldn't know. It would
- 15:05be a rumor. You've heard about, uh, Julian?
- 15:08Yeah. Snotty little
- 15:11brat coasting off of his parents. Ah,
- 15:14franchise success.
- 15:16Okay. Brutal. Ouch.
- 15:18Uh, there's the blunt Irish stone.
- 15:20That's right.
- 15:21I'm 13, man.
- 15:27Exactly.
- 15:29I mean, for this it would be ice cream bars, but,
- 15:32uh, yeah.
- 15:33All right. Fantastic. Bart, what do you got for
- 15:35Julian?
- 15:36My rumor about Julian is that,
- 15:39uh, most of his checker wins are attained by
- 15:42carefully screening his opponents. Like
- 15:441990s Mike Tyson.
- 15:46He's sharking his opponent.
- 15:49He doesn't face any real contenders.
- 15:51Well, he gets all the dumb kids and he's like, hey, you want to play
- 15:54a game? I bet you like, undefeated.
- 15:56Look who you know what's funny to pair with that is
- 15:58Julian does do that, but his win rate is
- 16:01like 5%. He is like one of the worst checkers
- 16:04players you could ever play.
- 16:06So he does bet.
- 16:07He tries his best.
- 16:09Just a rumor.
- 16:11He tries everything he can to push the ODS in
- 16:13his favor, but nothing is going to help.
- 16:16He just sucks.
- 16:19Brutal. Wow. You got slammed with
- 16:22two mean.
- 16:23I was going to say rumors going.
- 16:25Around about Julie people do not like.
- 16:27I was going to say one of them smells funny.
- 16:30Now I feel like gotta be a little bit more
- 16:33personalized now. Awesome. All right, so let's jump over
- 16:35to, um, Ben's Kieran
- 16:38character, Cameron. What's something you've heard about
- 16:40Kieran? That, uh, is a rumor about him. It doesn't have
- 16:43to be negative. It's funny when it's negative.
- 16:46So I'm assuming how we all know each other is we all go to the same
- 16:48school.
- 16:49Sure.
- 16:49I feel like that would be the best way. How else would we all
- 16:52know each other?
- 16:53My idea for, uh, because in the original
- 16:56Willy Wonka, uh, we kind of steal the
- 16:59idea of him sending out a special promotional
- 17:01item. And that's how you guys kind of get involved in this whole thing.
- 17:04But I didn't want to make it a
- 17:06huge span of space. Yeah, exactly. The whole
- 17:09world. So this is basically a local
- 17:12competition.
- 17:12So we would know each other.
- 17:14Yeah, exactly. So it's like you guys all live in this big city
- 17:17and there's a pretty good chance.
- 17:18So last year in the high school, there was a
- 17:21fire, uh, in the kitchen.
- 17:23Okay.
- 17:23And, uh, there's a rumor going around that is it
- 17:26pronounced Kieran.
- 17:27Kieran?
- 17:27Kieran started it.
- 17:29Oh, Kieran started the there's
- 17:31no proof.
- 17:32Maybe that's where a couple of his burns came.
- 17:35That's the word of mouth. He was a little adventurous with
- 17:38whatever dish he was cooking.
- 17:39Yeah, absolutely.
- 17:40Whole place went up.
- 17:41All right, fair enough. At the
- 17:43school. Awesome. Perfect. And then Bart,
- 17:46what's a rumor that Philip has heard about Kieran or
- 17:49even started.
- 17:52I hear that even though he portrays himself as
- 17:55a creative chef, all his recipes are from the same church
- 17:57cookbook.
- 17:59Dang takes recipes from church
- 18:02cookbook?
- 18:03The same one?
- 18:04The same one really hidden at the
- 18:07Irish Catholic community there. I don't
- 18:10know whether to feel why.
- 18:11Has everything got potatoes in.
- 18:18Stepping on.
- 18:19My family's toes here?
- 18:21Awesome. All right. And finally we got the rich kid,
- 18:24Philip. Uh oh, man. I'm really scared.
- 18:27Because you've acknowledged that your parents are dead.
- 18:30Parents died. I instantly thought of something to do with the
- 18:32parents.
- 18:33I thought of something very dark.
- 18:35Oh, gosh. All right. Cameron, what's something Julian's heard
- 18:37about?
- 18:38Well, considering that Ben's, uh, going to
- 18:41go dark, I'm going to not.
- 18:46I don't, um, know.
- 18:47I was thinking just like, he
- 18:50sweats a lot.
- 18:55He's got, um, premature perspiration.
- 18:57It's like the real world.
- 19:02He's just a very nervous kid.
- 19:05So it doesn't necessarily spark from like oh, man.
- 19:08He's really just overdoing it physically. It's just like any given
- 19:11moment he just starts sweating. All of a sudden he's like
- 19:14that.
- 19:14One guy from, uh, the Dr. Horrible sing along.
- 19:17Oh, moist. Played by shoot, uh, what's
- 19:20his name?
- 19:21Uh, the guy from Wallowitz from Big Bang Theory.
- 19:24Uh, love that guy. His power was
- 19:26sweaty. That was his superpower.
- 19:30He took the word that makes most people uncomfortable and he turned it
- 19:33into a superpower.
- 19:34It's great.
- 19:35Awesome. All right. Fantastic. And then ben what's? Something that
- 19:37Kieran has heard about Lil Philip dipple.
- 19:40Um, it's not dark,
- 19:43as in it's weird, but, um,
- 19:46he's heard that his grandmother is secretly trying
- 19:49to, uh, lawyer up and maybe spread out, uh,
- 19:52his inheritance because he's not
- 19:55of legal age to fully she's trying to get his money.
- 19:58She's trying to get his money to give. Does
- 20:01Philip have any, uh, other family? Like
- 20:04cousins, uh, or aunts and uncle?
- 20:05No, it's just me.
- 20:06Just him. That makes this more intense too,
- 20:09because won this contest to possibly
- 20:12inherit the entire, um, factory. If
- 20:15she can get you on that legal bounds of getting your families in.
- 20:18Here factory on top, she might get.
- 20:19The factory on top. I've got to
- 20:22oversee his estate. Quote unquote
- 20:24conservatorship.
- 20:25I'm going to say that is a big rumor. That's a big rumor for a
- 20:28child. The kids of the
- 20:31schoolyard are like, ah, grandma's good enough.
- 20:34He's heard that from maybe his parents.
- 20:36Uh, sure makes sense.
- 20:37Wow, they're blue collar.
- 20:39I'm officially worried. There's arsenic in my citrus pop.
- 20:43Sugar how dark is what else exactly?
- 20:45Sugar free, filled with arsenic.
- 20:47I thought they tasted bad because there's no sugar.
- 20:51If you were diabetic, then it wouldn't make any sense.
- 20:54That why he's so sweaty.
- 20:57His system is constantly trying to
- 21:00filter.
- 21:01He's not getting enough sugar in his diet.
