- 0:00If you're exhausted and overwhelmed with homemaking, then this right here could
- 0:05be just the thing to help you fix it What do you do when your house is messy
- 0:10and you have no motivation left for cleaning, especially because you've been
- 0:15busy all day and you're just so tired?
- 0:19Will a better cleaning routine save you?
- 0:22Probably not, because you've tried that already.
- 0:26Believe me, you are not the only one.
- 0:29I hear this all the time from my listeners, and I
- 0:33feel this one often myself.
- 0:35Sometimes the mess just feels like too much.
- 0:40That's reality.
- 0:41A few days ago, I got an email from a listener named Caitlin.
- 0:45She said that she often hears herself in her own head telling
- 0:49herself, "See this mess?
- 0:51The messy house means that you are a failure.
- 0:54You're irresponsible with everything, and you don't even deserve to
- 0:58have what you have because you don't take care of any of it."
- 1:03Now, if you relate to that story, if you've ever heard that story
- 1:07playing in your own head, hit the like button and then look and see
- 1:11that you are not the only one.
- 1:13I have so been there myself before too.
- 1:17But
- 1:18Neither you nor I needs to stay stuck listening to that lie
- 1:23that we beat ourselves up with.
- 1:25It's not working.
- 1:26It's not motivating us, and I have some solutions that will work.
- 1:33I'm Misty Winkler, homemaker of 25-plus years, homeschool mom of
- 1:37five, grandma, and author of the book Home is for Hospitality: Why
- 1:43Your Home and Homemaking Matter.
- 1:45I wanna help you manage your home and life cheerfully and competently so that what
- 1:51you do and how you do it glorifies God.
- 1:55If that kind of encouragement sounds up your alley, then hit the subscribe
- 2:00button because every weekday for Organize October, I'm gonna have new
- 2:05episodes on organizing our attitudes.
- 2:08Grab a basket of laundry to fold, and let's talk about how to replace
- 2:13that lie in our heads and how to get started seeing progress even when the
- 2:19house is messy and you're exhausted.
- 2:22So we're starting from the point of recognizing that the house is a
- 2:27mess And it's true that sometimes the house is a mess because
- 2:31we haven't been doing our job.
- 2:33Maybe we let the mess build up and we should have been cleaning, but we weren't.
- 2:38But just because the house is messy doesn't necessarily mean
- 2:44we've done anything wrong.
- 2:47The house being a mess is not a point of failure.
- 2:51It is our job Life produces mess.
- 2:56People living in a space will generate a mess.
- 3:01The fact that there is a mess isn't a problem
- 3:05It's just the next thing that we need to do.
- 3:08But often, somehow we get it in our heads, usually without even realizing
- 3:12it, thinking that the perfect cleaning routine Or the right set of habits
- 3:18for us or for our children will mean that the house is never messy again.
- 3:25And so we clean, we find cleaning schedules, we pick habits to work
- 3:33on towards the goal of having a house that's never messy.
- 3:38And when that doesn't happen, when our house becomes a mess, that we
- 3:44interpret that as a sign of failure because we thought that our goal
- 3:49was having a never messy house.
- 3:52But that shouldn't have been the goal at all.
- 3:55Our goal needs to be faithfully taking the next step in front of us.
- 4:00And so if the house is messy, that's just the next step.
- 4:04Most Mondays our house is very messy because we don't really
- 4:10worry about it on Sunday.
- 4:12And even with only four people living in our house right now, it is a small rental,
- 4:17so it's a small space and four people And four full-size people can actually
- 4:22make a lot of mess even in just one day.
- 4:25So the mess on Monday morning isn't a sign of failure at all.
- 4:32It's a sign that we took a day of rest, and that today's job is to clean up.
- 4:39And it's really not that big of a deal if we tackle it cheerfully instead
- 4:45of making it mean something that it doesn't mean When we can look at the
- 4:50mess and see the life that was lived, and this is the evidence of that life,
- 4:56it's the effect of a full busy life being lived, then we can be grateful
- 5:03for the people and the situation and the activities and the growth and the
- 5:09busyness that then resulted in the mess.
- 5:14And then we can take care of it because managing the home, managing that space,
- 5:20and taking care of things is our job.
- 5:23So it's good to have a job.
- 5:25Everyone still needs us.
- 5:27W- And they need us to help them learn how to take care of mess as well.
- 5:32It's not like we have to be the maid cleaning up after everyone.
- 5:36But it is our job to manage our space well.
- 5:40Not to make it look like our space has never been lived in or never touched.
- 5:45But yes, the job of a homemaker involves a lot of moving stuff around day after day.
- 5:53You move the dirty laundry to the laundry room.
- 5:57You move the clean laundry to the bedrooms to put the stuff away.
- 6:01You clear the table again and again and again.
- 6:04You take the dirty dishes to the sink and put the clean dishes away.
- 6:08Moving stuff around our house is a large part of homemaking.
- 6:14That's not meaningless That's not a problem.
- 6:18It's not depressing
- 6:20It's just management.
- 6:21That's the kind of job that we have.
- 6:23We have a caretaking management job, and we can learn to do it well and cheerfully
- 6:28So that's the mindset attitude piece.
- 6:32But then we are left with the actual messy space, and we don't feel like
- 6:39we have the energy to deal with it.
- 6:41We're tired, exhausted, and probably a big part of that exhaustion is
- 6:47coming from feeling depleted of energy because of the negative story
- 6:52that we're spinning about the job.
- 6:55Telling ourselves that we are a failure because there's a mess is a surefire way
- 7:00to kill motivation to actually work on it
- 7:03Listening to lies is exhausting.
- 7:06Telling ourself the truth, working from gratitude is motivating
- 7:12So here's my practical solution for you if the house is messy and you feel exhausted.
- 7:18You start with a timer.
- 7:21This is the best smile and start habit.
- 7:25Inside Convivial Circle, we call it the transformation 10.
- 7:29Pick one area, any area in your house that really is bugging you for any reason.
- 7:37Take a timer, set it for 10 minutes.
- 7:41Spend 10 minutes making that one spot better.
- 7:46Then you stop when the timer goes off, and you notice the progress that you made.
- 7:52Now, notice some of the words that I said as I explained this to you.
- 7:55I did not say fix it.
- 7:58I did not even say clean it or declutter it, and I definitely did
- 8:03not say finish or organize that space.
- 8:08Whatever the space is, it might need some cleaning, it might need some
- 8:12decluttering, it might need some organizing, but you're going to just
- 8:17spend 10 minutes focused in on making it better And when you do that, you will
- 8:24naturally choose the actions that will give you the biggest bang for your buck
- 8:31Because you're spending 10 minutes only and you're not worried about finishing,
- 8:35you're not worried about an end result, you will naturally choose to do the
- 8:41things that will have the biggest impact
- 8:45You'll throw away the trash.
- 8:47You'll, you'll do the easy things that make a big difference
- 8:52And in 10 minutes, you really can make, you really can make that space so
- 8:58much better than you thought possible
- 9:01And then when you stop and notice and see for yourself 10 minutes made
- 9:06a difference, you made a difference in that space That's motivating.
- 9:12Now you're reinforcing a true narrative, which is that you are a homemaker.
- 9:18You are someone who can spend time and get something done
- 9:23Maybe you didn't finish it, maybe it's not done done, but you did do something.
- 9:28Which is the opposite story of telling yourself that you're
- 9:32a failure who is irresponsible and can't take care of anything.
- 9:36If you tell yourself that story, your brain will then notice any details
- 9:43that will back up that story And you will start to live in a way that
- 9:48reinforces that story because you don't want to acknowledge that you're lying
- 9:53But it is a lie.
- 9:55So instead, make a difference in one small spot for 10 minutes, and then
- 10:01tell yourself, notice and tell yourself that you are the kind of person who
- 10:07can see something that bothers you and make a difference in only 10 minutes.
- 10:11You will start noticing more areas that bug you, but you'll start taking
- 10:17But you'll start just making it a little bit better, even if it's only three
- 10:20minutes, five minutes, 10 minutes.
- 10:23You can do a little something and make it better.
- 10:25You're the kind of person that makes everywhere you go a little bit better.
- 10:29That's a completely different story
- 10:33But it's true.
- 10:35That's the way God made us to be.
- 10:37He made us to take dominion.
- 10:39He made us to work.
- 10:41And so when we work and we notice that we have an effect on our
- 10:46surroundings, that we can tend and take care of our place, and it makes
- 10:51a difference we start reinforcing that story with our actions more and more
- 10:58It matters what you tell yourself about yourself and about your life
- 11:02and your home and your situation.
- 11:05It matters what you pay attention to in your life.
- 11:09Your home is not a trophy that other people are smudging.
- 11:13Your home is not a trophy that's supposed to be untouched up high on a shelf.
- 11:19Your home is a stage, and you're the stage manager.
- 11:23Life is happening on that stage, and every once in a while, it needs a scene reset.
- 11:31That's fine.
- 11:31That's your job.
- 11:32You can do that.
- 11:33It's doing its job when the props are scattered everywhere
- 11:37at the end of the scene.
- 11:39That's no problem.
- 11:40They need to be moved.
- 11:41They need to be swapped, and then we're ready for the next scene of
- 11:45life You're not setting up a dollhouse that your toddler has toppled over
- 11:50Watch your analogies, watch your stories, and stay tuned for
