- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, we're self Deception from Stockholm, Sweden, and we play
- 0:05Speaker 1: I think it's called kind of like an octane core,
- 0:08Speaker 1: some kind of pop and core, and I don't know,
- 0:10Speaker 1: it's it's it's the hardest thing to label yourself. And
- 0:16Speaker 1: we just we're releasing a new album now that we
- 0:19Speaker 1: actually the first one we wrote on tour, so it's
- 0:21Speaker 1: a very it's a live album. The feel it feels
- 0:26Speaker 1: a lot more live. So yeah, I guess that's the
- 0:30Speaker 1: that's the intro for it.
- 0:32Speaker 2: That'll do me. Man, You've got it right there from
- 0:34Speaker 2: the outset. Like when you're saying it's hard to categorize
- 0:36Speaker 2: into a genre, Like when it came through to me
- 0:38Speaker 2: the first time, it just called you modern metal and
- 0:41Speaker 2: I'm thinking, like, ohh I harm modern metal and I
- 0:44Speaker 2: pressed playing it was like, there is no way in
- 0:46Speaker 2: the world you could classify you guys into anyone. Ghre,
- 0:49Speaker 2: there's so much going on.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Yeah, we don't even know. That's always like the first
- 0:54Speaker 1: question and it's always the hardest.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Well I'll skip that one then, but.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Actually, but actually I got to tell you though, we
- 1:02Speaker 1: have a really our genre is good to play because
- 1:06Speaker 1: we can play a lot of let's just say a
- 1:10Speaker 1: lot of mainstream kind of festivals, but we can play
- 1:14Speaker 1: metal festivals also, so it's it kind of covers like
- 1:18Speaker 1: both areas. So it has all that, you know, the
- 1:24Speaker 1: kind of catchy stuff but also the metal breakdowns and
- 1:28Speaker 1: marsh pits.
- 1:29Speaker 2: There's a lot going on. And as you said, you
- 1:33Speaker 2: will be releasing a new album, one of us on
- 1:35Speaker 2: the fifteen, which first the new label, Napalm Records. So
- 1:39Speaker 2: does that play any extra pressure and you think gone
- 1:42Speaker 2: into the night level?
- 1:44Speaker 1: No?
- 1:44Speaker 3: Actually not, we were we've been.
- 1:47Speaker 1: We chose to to do everything ourselves, like five six
- 1:53Speaker 1: years ago when we crowdfunded everything to get everything up
- 1:57Speaker 1: and running, and we've been doing really well, but everything
- 2:01Speaker 1: has grown so big that we needed to expand. And Napalm,
- 2:07Speaker 1: let's just say that they had the best offer and
- 2:09Speaker 1: the best the best ideas out of what we were
- 2:13Speaker 1: looking for.
- 2:13Speaker 3: So it it's not pressure.
- 2:17Speaker 1: It's more like a relief to have somebody to.
- 2:21Speaker 3: To work with and collab with on everything.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Yeah, so we'll leak back to where we were before, mate, Like,
- 2:28Speaker 2: can you dive deeper into the album from a musical
- 2:31Speaker 2: point of view for us and tell us what you
- 2:32Speaker 2: were going for?
- 2:34Speaker 3: Well, we never have a plan beforehand.
- 2:37Speaker 1: It kind of becomes it kind of becomes what it is,
- 2:41Speaker 1: like like it totally when we started on our own feet.
- 2:44Speaker 1: We just decided one day that we want to we
- 2:47Speaker 1: want to try some new stuff and you know everything,
- 2:50Speaker 1: every new idea that we can throw into the songs,
- 2:53Speaker 1: however crazy it sounds, we've got to try it first.
- 2:57Speaker 1: And it's always been like ever since then, it's been
- 3:01Speaker 1: a motto for us to do that. And so this
- 3:04Speaker 1: album is written a lot on tour. We've been touring extensively,
- 3:10Speaker 1: and we've like realized during during touring and during writing
- 3:14Speaker 1: this album that we want to capture and we want
- 3:19Speaker 1: to capture so it feels like it's the live feeling
- 3:24Speaker 1: to something that it's that it's musicians behind it because
- 3:28Speaker 1: we used to think that perfecting everything was was the
- 3:31Speaker 1: way to go, but now is every imperfection is a quality.
- 3:38Speaker 1: It can add quality to it and you've got to
- 3:42Speaker 1: hear that it's real stuff. So it's it's more, it's more,
- 3:45Speaker 1: it's a more it's a more organic album that we
- 3:47Speaker 1: know we've ever done so. But but I'd say that
- 3:50Speaker 1: the most thing is that it's influenced from being on
- 3:55Speaker 1: tour the whole goddamn time writing.
- 4:00Speaker 2: I would to say that I'm writing on tour changes
- 4:03Speaker 2: of dynamics in the song as opposed to write in the.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Studio or yeah, we're.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Like I said, this is the first time. Doesn't It
- 4:13Speaker 1: doesn't make it worse or better. It just it's just
- 4:17Speaker 1: a different way of approaching it. No, because we have to.
- 4:22Speaker 1: It's just that it's just the same. We don't have to.
- 4:26Speaker 1: We didn't want to perfect everything. That's the thing, because
- 4:29Speaker 1: being out and playing on stage and doing all these
- 4:32Speaker 1: crazy tours, it's just like a it's so we for
- 4:38Speaker 1: we write at an album where we feel close to
- 4:40Speaker 1: to the audience and we want to use I mean,
- 4:44Speaker 1: I've always written songs that are storytelling or emotional or
- 4:49Speaker 1: things that I feel, But now I can have like
- 4:52Speaker 1: another kind of context when it comes to when it
- 4:57Speaker 1: comes to actually meeting people every night. And so it's
- 5:03Speaker 1: it's I don't know, good or bad. In some ways,
- 5:06Speaker 1: maybe perfectionism would have been a great thing, but I
- 5:11Speaker 1: just I just love the album, how we how we
- 5:13Speaker 1: got it, the way we did Love Me.
- 5:17Speaker 2: There's so much goun on musically within pretty much every song,
- 5:20Speaker 2: Like in the creating process. How do you how do
- 5:23Speaker 2: you find the ballance between all that? How do you
- 5:25Speaker 2: know when you've gone too far in one direction or
- 5:27Speaker 2: maybe not far enough in another.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Now I have to I have to tell you that
- 5:32Speaker 1: we are we are a lot of five people. Actually
- 5:36Speaker 1: we're actually five people in the band, but four of
- 5:39Speaker 1: us are just played. The fifth. The fifth member is Eric,
- 5:43Speaker 1: our drummer's little brother that plays that is a song.
- 5:47Speaker 1: He's a producer, but he doesn't he's not like a
- 5:51Speaker 1: part of the what do you say he's on the poster,
- 5:59Speaker 1: he's not. He doesn't want to be a tory mistician.
- 6:00Speaker 1: But he's a great songwriter and he's a big part
- 6:03Speaker 1: of us. But the thing is that all of us five.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Then let's just say that these eleven songs that we
- 6:11Speaker 1: have on this album is the only eleven songs that
- 6:14Speaker 1: we could agree on. Yeah, and you have to you
- 6:19Speaker 1: have to fight for your ideas because oh, it can
- 6:23Speaker 1: get really dark sometimes when it comes.
- 6:26Speaker 3: To like yeah, it's just you fight for your ideas.
- 6:28Speaker 3: And I guess what.
- 6:32Speaker 1: The thing is that it'll even if we try some
- 6:34Speaker 1: blues or if we try something else and just throw
- 6:36Speaker 1: in any genre or any idea. It's still me singing,
- 6:40Speaker 1: it's still the same vocal production, it's still I mean,
- 6:43Speaker 1: our drummer Eric has some of his signature fills that
- 6:47Speaker 1: he always falls into, and it's like, at the end
- 6:50Speaker 1: of the day, it's still gonna sound like us. Yeah, So,
- 6:54Speaker 1: I mean for us, when we're writing it, it feels
- 6:56Speaker 1: like it's such a big and broad we're trying something
- 7:00Speaker 1: very extreme on the one side and doing something extream
- 7:04Speaker 1: on the other side, and it's it's not that at
- 7:07Speaker 1: all when it comes to when we were finished.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Yeah, there's one song there that I've got to ask
- 7:14Speaker 2: you about just because of the name of the song,
- 7:17Speaker 2: and that's Ketamine Cowboy, Like, I've got to know that
- 7:19Speaker 2: I came about.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Well, I suspect that you've understood that. There's like like
- 7:28Speaker 1: you've understood what it is about. Yeah, so yeah, but
- 7:33Speaker 1: you know, like I did not. I'm not saying that
- 7:37Speaker 1: they were not a political band, but I'm also not
- 7:40Speaker 1: saying that we are.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Let's just leave it at that.
- 7:43Speaker 2: That's the fucking power of the song anyway, mate. All
- 7:45Speaker 2: the way the album artwork, too, is also my like
- 7:51Speaker 2: you've got a vampire makey on the front prailing of
- 7:54Speaker 2: baseball bat over his shoulders like it's it's striking and
- 7:58Speaker 2: it's it's intimidating and it's scary and it's awesome, but
- 8:01Speaker 2: at the same time, like, well, wait, where does it
- 8:03Speaker 2: fit in with everything?
- 8:05Speaker 1: Well, I just just to start with, just to give
- 8:10Speaker 1: my good good colleagues some prompts, is that he eric
- 8:15Speaker 1: the drummer in a band if I would be the.
- 8:18Speaker 3: The con when it comes to concepts and lyrical guy.
- 8:22Speaker 3: He is the visual king.
- 8:24Speaker 1: He can like see, he have a vision, he can
- 8:26Speaker 1: see something in front of him and just make it reality.
- 8:30Speaker 3: And then he he just he looked at the whole
- 8:33Speaker 3: one of Us.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Thing and we have like another song that we're releasing
- 8:36Speaker 1: now that is called that Don't Belong and how how
- 8:39Speaker 1: it was, how this whole album is written like on
- 8:45Speaker 1: tour and we feel like all the fans and the
- 8:48Speaker 1: people that come to more like a family then than
- 8:52Speaker 1: people that come to the shows. And so like the
- 8:55Speaker 1: whole one of Us thing was like, I mean, the
- 9:02Speaker 1: cultures is with with the live music and Metelock, it's
- 9:06Speaker 1: pretty special and it's not for everybody.
- 9:08Speaker 3: And there was something with with.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Being a part of something and I and the whole,
- 9:15Speaker 1: the whole Monkey mask like represents what you go into
- 9:21Speaker 1: when you like, for example, one of us. The song
- 9:24Speaker 1: is all about the mosh pit. It's connection, I guess.
- 9:28Speaker 1: And you put on the mask, and you put on.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Your your.
- 9:31Speaker 3: What are you sorry?
- 9:32Speaker 1: You?
- 9:32Speaker 3: What do you say? I mean, you have your you
- 9:34Speaker 3: have your persona, you you.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Do what you're at the place where you love, you know,
- 9:40Speaker 1: with the people you love.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll do them. Cowboy must have been hanging out
- 9:45Speaker 2: with the Vampi and Monkey for a bit.
- 9:48Speaker 1: No.
- 9:49Speaker 3: I got to tell you, though.
- 9:49Speaker 1: I can tell you something about that song is that
- 9:51Speaker 1: it's so weird because in the morning today I wake
- 9:55Speaker 1: up and I just drink a coffee and I watch
- 9:57Speaker 1: the news. Right, But when you're out on tour for
- 10:00Speaker 1: so long, I mean, you wake up for different places
- 10:03Speaker 1: and you're not really so understand like what's going around
- 10:08Speaker 1: in the world, and you're not.
- 10:09Speaker 3: So cohesive for that, and you walk like everything.
- 10:14Speaker 1: You wake up in different countries and they have different
- 10:16Speaker 1: kind of values and different kind of problems, and I
- 10:20Speaker 1: guess you pick up things from a different way, like
- 10:25Speaker 1: news and happenings in the world and people of people's
- 10:28Speaker 1: opinions that it colors. It's it's just colors what you
- 10:34Speaker 1: how you feel about stuff during that time.
- 10:36Speaker 3: So I say, Kendamine cowways, a direct.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Is directly out of a conversation or conversations out on tour.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Like I did say in your eyes might that it's
- 10:49Speaker 2: a great story. But I'm not going to push you
- 10:51Speaker 2: any fat that. You're also no far off in return
- 10:56Speaker 2: to a Stria for Run of Dyke starting in Brisbane
- 10:58Speaker 2: on April twenty third, and you hit Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide
- 11:02Speaker 2: and finishing Perth on April the twenty eighth. Mates, so
- 11:05Speaker 2: you packed ready to go. It's not far away.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Actually, I have to tell you this is going to
- 11:10Speaker 1: probably sound very disappointing.
- 11:13Speaker 3: We had to just we had we were having to
- 11:15Speaker 3: perstpone this or we have already done that.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Okay, We're just very It was just very sad due
- 11:22Speaker 1: to something partially logistical reasons, but we are going we're
- 11:29Speaker 1: looking at doing doing it at the end of the year,
- 11:32Speaker 1: instaid because of how your weather is on the on
- 11:36Speaker 1: like the other side of on the other side of
- 11:39Speaker 1: the equation. So we were really sad about this, but
- 11:42Speaker 1: we are gonna We're going to come back to Australia
- 11:45Speaker 1: very soon.
- 11:46Speaker 2: After hearing that album today, I booked the babysitter already
- 11:49Speaker 2: for that night, so I'll cancel it. I've got one
- 11:55Speaker 2: more question for you, mate, and I'm sure you probably
- 11:57Speaker 2: answered this a few times, but written through your bios
- 12:00Speaker 2: it self, perception was born off. You sent our wrong
- 12:02Speaker 2: message the area. I've got to hear the story about that.
- 12:06Speaker 2: It sounds sounds like it's going to be cool.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:08Speaker 1: So back in the day, there was I played in
- 12:12Speaker 1: a band just when I was like in my teenage years,
- 12:16Speaker 1: just a little bit. We we played together and I
- 12:20Speaker 1: got in a fight there with one of the guys
- 12:22Speaker 1: in the band, and well we didn't see each other
- 12:25Speaker 1: for a couple of months. And when I got back
- 12:28Speaker 1: and they had a new singer and the whole.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Band sounded so great, you know.
- 12:33Speaker 1: It was the jealousy, And so I decided to go
- 12:39Speaker 1: on these to like a platform that was called Vendlin
- 12:43Speaker 1: on the internet. It was like a kind of like
- 12:45Speaker 1: a myspacer. It's this is way way pre Facebook or
- 12:49Speaker 1: this is so long ago. It was a place for
- 12:52Speaker 1: musicians to find each other in Sweden anyway, and so
- 12:55Speaker 1: I started writing to this guy. We're talking to this
- 13:00Speaker 1: guy named Eric that I met that was a drummer
- 13:03Speaker 1: out and he gave me his user user name that
- 13:09Speaker 1: was Eric drummer something, and so like a couple of
- 13:13Speaker 1: days later, I just wrote to Eric, my Eric that
- 13:18Speaker 1: I have today. It was Eric drummer something else I
- 13:21Speaker 1: don't know. And the fun part was that he didn't
- 13:25Speaker 1: understand what the hell I was talking about.
- 13:27Speaker 3: He was just, he was just.
- 13:29Speaker 1: But the thing is he liked the same kind of music,
- 13:33Speaker 1: and so I mean, we got together and we tried
- 13:37Speaker 1: out a couple of musicians and we started a band
- 13:39Speaker 1: in two thousand and four, and I think just a
- 13:44Speaker 1: year after that, me and Eric split off of the
- 13:48Speaker 1: other guys because I'll quote this because we are deceiving
- 13:53Speaker 1: ourselves for trying and style of music that doesn't work
- 13:55Speaker 1: in Sweden. So self deception, right, Oh that's where that's
- 14:02Speaker 1: where that's from.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Oh, bed Raval takes your time. It's been a pleasure
- 14:06Speaker 2: speaking with the album One of Us is out made
- 14:09Speaker 2: fifteenth and it's one of the freshest, most brilliant sounded
- 14:12Speaker 2: albums I've heard in a while, mate, So best of
- 14:14Speaker 2: luck with it. And look forward to seeing you when
- 14:15Speaker 2: you get out of here.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Yeah, good talk, Thanks for having me on
