Speaker 5: the show now. Kanawha County Commission President Ben Salango. Good morning, sir.
• 2:25
Speaker 5: Welcome to the show.
• 2:26
Speaker 6: Good morning. Actually, I have a meeting with Tony the
• 2:28
Speaker 6: tailor in 20 minutes.
• 2:30
Speaker 5: So what are you buying him? Because he's going to
• 2:32
Speaker 5: want you to buy him breakfast or something. That's true.
• 2:37
Speaker 6: You're going to go broke.
• 2:39
Speaker 5: I'm just throwing that out there. Just an FYI, you
• 2:42
Speaker 5: and I are going to be dragging tomorrow because our
• 2:44
Speaker 5: Cowboys play the Bucs. Tonight. Actually, the next three Cowboy
• 2:49
Speaker 5: games are night games. Next Sunday night and then the
• 2:52
  Speaker 5: following Monday night.
• 2:53
Speaker 6: I can't stay up for them. I'll watch the first half,
• 2:55
Speaker 6: and then I'll just get up in the morning and
• 2:56
Speaker 6: check the news to see if they won. I can't
• 2:59
Speaker 6: stay up for them.
• 3:00
  Speaker 5: Well, they're playing a team that hasn't won a game
• 3:01
Speaker 5: this season, but it's just Dallas.
• 3:03
Speaker 6: Yeah, that's right. You never know. It'll be a close game.
• 3:05
Speaker 5: Kamish, last time we had you on, we talked a
• 3:07
Speaker 5: lot about the Clean Seas Project and Bell. Was there
• 3:09
Speaker 5: any update on that?
• 3:11
Speaker 6: There has been, and let me start. Maybe we kind
• 3:14
Speaker 6: of go back to how the county commission got involved.
• 3:17
Speaker 6: And let me say the county commission does not have
• 3:20
Speaker 6: the authority at this point to stop the project, but
• 3:23
Speaker 6: I have publicly come out against the project. And primarily
• 3:26
Speaker 6: because there seems to be a lack of communication between
• 3:30
Speaker 6: Clean Seas and its parent company, Clean Vision and the residents.
• 3:34
Speaker 6: And so we were, we were at a commission meeting.
• 3:36
Speaker 6: I think it was in July. I may be wrong
• 3:37
Speaker 6: about that. I think it was in July. And some
• 3:40
Speaker 6: of the residents showed up about this Clean Seas project,
• 3:42
Speaker 6: which is a, let's just call it a plastic recycling
• 3:48
Speaker 6: project in the Upper Kanawha Valley at the 84 Lumber
• 3:50
Speaker 6: Building in Quincy. And they showed up concerned about air
• 3:54
Speaker 6: quality and quite frankly, the company's finances. So we started
• 3:57
Speaker 6: digging into it and they're right. I mean, there are
• 4:01
Speaker 6: serious concerns surrounding the emissions and the air quality of
• 4:05
Speaker 6: Clean Seas. And quite frankly, the company wasn't doing, was
• 4:09
Speaker 6: making no effort to communicate with the residents. So they
• 4:14
Speaker 6: presented to me a petition with 1,100 signatures because at
• 4:17
Speaker 6: that time the DEP permitting still had not occurred. We
• 4:21
Speaker 6: sent the county commission, sent a letter to the DEP
• 4:25
Speaker 6: with the petition and a lengthy letter outlining all the
• 4:28
Speaker 6: residents' concerns. The DEP still approved the permit.
• 4:32
  Speaker 5: That's fine.
• 4:32
Speaker 6: So the next step was we attended, Commissioner Gessel and I,
• 4:38
Speaker 6: Commissioner Tennant was busy. She had another event to attend.
• 4:41
Speaker 6: We attended an event. in Bell, where we chatted with
• 4:46
Speaker 6: the residents and their concerns. And they had a very
• 4:48
Speaker 6: detailed presentation for us, which we appreciated. After that meeting,
• 4:53
Speaker 6: I sent a letter to the CEO, Dan Bates of
• 4:55
Speaker 6: Clean Vision, and asked him to do a public meeting
• 4:58
Speaker 6: with the residents. The CEO said, I will do a
• 5:02
Speaker 6: Zoom with you and we can chat. And I can just,
• 5:05
Speaker 6: I'll outline kind of, he was going to outline their
• 5:08
Speaker 6: position and then I was going to relay the information
• 5:10
Speaker 6: to the residents. We're actually in the process of doing
• 5:12
Speaker 6: that now. So that meeting occurred on Tuesday around 10 a.m. And,
• 5:19
Speaker 6: you know, I learned a lot, but also they seemingly
• 5:24
Speaker 6: agree with a lot of the issues that the residents
• 5:27
Speaker 6: have concern. For instance, the residents wanted continuous fence line monitoring.
• 5:33
Speaker 6: Clean Seas is going to do that. And the County
• 5:35
Speaker 6: Commission even offered to pitch in to help to make
• 5:37
Speaker 6: sure that that occurs. That is a big issue because
• 5:39
Speaker 6: you've got two schools in the area. So In order
• 5:42
Speaker 6: for that to be effective, there has to be monitoring now.
• 5:46
Speaker 6: There needs to be sampling now to get a baseline
• 5:49
Speaker 6: before the facility operates. So they have a baseline and
• 5:53
Speaker 6: then continuous monitoring after that to see if there are
• 5:56
Speaker 6: any changes from the baseline. So the company has committed
• 5:59
Speaker 6: to doing that. The County Commission has, at least through
• 6:02
Speaker 6: me and Commissioner Tennant was on the Zoom as well,
• 6:05
Speaker 6: that we have offered to assist in that so that
• 6:09
Speaker 6: At least that will– it won't alleviate the residents' concerns,
• 6:12
Speaker 6: but it will certainly address one of their top concerns,
• 6:15
Speaker 6: which was emissions and pollution. And if there are any
• 6:19
Speaker 6: deviations from the baseline, then we can address it at
• 6:21
Speaker 6: that point. So we were able to accomplish that goal.
• 6:26
Speaker 6: I asked the CEO to come out with– first, I
• 6:29
Speaker 6: asked him to have some type of public involvement where
• 6:33
Speaker 6: he can– or someone from the company can speak with
• 6:36
Speaker 6: the residents, address some of their concerns. And so they're
• 6:40
Speaker 6: looking at that as well. So I'm not saying I'm still,
• 6:44
Speaker 6: I'm for the project, but we are essentially without power
• 6:48
Speaker 6: at this point to do anything about it. I mean,
• 6:50
Speaker 6: we could have zoned, you know, if we had zoned
• 6:52
Speaker 6: years ago and said, you can't do this, but we
• 6:54
Speaker 6: would have to have, you know, we'd have to be
• 6:56
Speaker 6: clairvoyant to be able to do that. So at this point,
• 7:00
Speaker 6: we're trying to address some of the residents' questions. They
• 7:02
Speaker 6: prepared a very detailed list for me. which I was
• 7:05
Speaker 6: very appreciative. They sent a list before the meeting. I
• 7:08
Speaker 6: asked some of the questions ranging from the air monitoring
• 7:11
Speaker 6: to evacuation procedures, and we got a lot of responses
• 7:16
Speaker 6: from the CEO and his team. He had their COO,
• 7:20
Speaker 6: they had their environmental folks on there. So I'm in
• 7:23
Speaker 6: the process of preparing a summary of the meeting, and
• 7:26
Speaker 6: I'm going to give it to the residents based upon
• 7:28
Speaker 6: the questions that they had me ask.
• 7:31
Speaker 5: And you were telling me, and I don't know how
• 7:33
Speaker 5: much you want to go into this. If you don't,
• 7:34
Speaker 5: that's fine, Ben. Again, we're talking County Commission President Ben Salinga.
• 7:37
Speaker 5: There seemed to be a little pushback, I guess, from
• 7:39
Speaker 5: some people that you had the meeting. I mean, why
• 7:42
  Speaker 5: would that be?
• 7:43
Speaker 6: I think some people, I think they wanted the information.
• 7:47
Speaker 6: They prefer that they get the information directly.
• 7:49
Speaker 5: Sure. Which I don't blame them.
• 7:51
  Speaker 7: Understood.
• 7:51
  Speaker 8: Understood.
• 7:52
  Speaker 6: I was just kind of a go-between.
• 7:55
Speaker 5: Well, and they weren't offering what– I mean, at this point,
• 7:59
Speaker 5: the company, from what you're telling me, wasn't offering to
• 8:01
Speaker 5: meet with the citizens.
• 8:03
  Speaker 2: Correct.
• 8:03
Speaker 6: And still aren't. I mean, I've asked them to do that.
• 8:05
Speaker 6: But so they– how that happened, when I sent the letter,
• 8:08
Speaker 6: I was surprised. You know, the CEO responded probably within
• 8:11
Speaker 6: an hour of me sending him the letter asking for
• 8:13
Speaker 6: a meeting. And we coordinated some dates, had the Zoom meeting.
• 8:18
Speaker 6: I asked many of the questions that the residents had posed.
• 8:21
Speaker 6: He responded, or at least had the ones that were
• 8:24
Speaker 6: very technical. Some of their scientists responded. And so I'm
• 8:30
Speaker 6: going to relay that information. But I think some of
• 8:32
Speaker 6: the residents were upset because I announced on the news
• 8:37
Speaker 6: that I had had the meeting instead of coming to
• 8:39
  Speaker 6: them first.
• 8:39
Speaker 5: But, I mean, you can't make the people– I mean,
• 8:41
Speaker 5: here's what I'm taking from this, Ben. You cannot make
• 8:44
Speaker 5: the company– at this point, doesn't want to have a
• 8:47
Speaker 5: public meeting, you can't force them to. I mean, you're
• 8:50
Speaker 5: a county commission president. You can't order them to appear.
• 8:55
  Speaker 9: Yeah.
• 8:55
Speaker 6: I think I was the first public official to come
• 8:57
Speaker 6: out and oppose the project. On this show, by the way.
• 9:00
Speaker 6: On this show, which made headlines and I think got
• 9:03
Speaker 6: Clean Sea's attention, even though they understand. I mean, they're
• 9:06
Speaker 6: not idiots. They understand that I can't go up there
• 9:08
Speaker 6: and stop the project. There are things that we can
• 9:11
Speaker 6: do if perhaps the monitoring doesn't go as we hope
• 9:16
Speaker 6: it does. So that's where we are. I think that
• 9:20
Speaker 6: it was a productive meeting. I think the residents will
• 9:25
Speaker 6: get the information, and then if they have follow-up questions,
• 9:28
Speaker 6: then I'll schedule another Zoom with the CEO if he'll
• 9:32
Speaker 6: allow it. Is there any possibility, after your meeting with them,
• 9:37
Speaker 6: that they would maybe consider meeting with the residents?
• 9:40
Speaker 5: I hope so. I hope so.
• 9:42
Speaker 6: And I think that there are some different things that
• 9:43
Speaker 6: I proposed about at least providing information to the public.
• 9:49
Speaker 6: Because silence, you know, when they're silent, it just makes
• 9:54
  Speaker 6: it worse.
• 9:54
  Speaker 2: Sure.
• 9:54
Speaker 5: Because you'll have to fill in the blanks yourself.
• 9:57
Speaker 6: That's exactly right. And people do fill in the blanks.
• 9:59
  Speaker 3: Yes, they do.
• 10:00
Speaker 6: And some of it is probably accurate and some of
• 10:02
Speaker 6: it is probably incredibly inaccurate. But I think that at
• 10:06
Speaker 6: least a dialogue with the public is warranted.
• 10:09
  Speaker 5: Okay.
• 10:10
Speaker 6: And honestly, I was trying to fill that gap. And
• 10:12
Speaker 6: so far, we've been able to do that. And I
• 10:15
Speaker 6: think that when we summarize the meeting and get it
• 10:18
Speaker 6: back to the residents— that hopefully that is at least
• 10:22
Speaker 6: somewhat useful. And if not, then they can ask me
• 10:25
Speaker 6: more questions and I'll go back. But I'm at least
• 10:29
Speaker 6: happy that we had the meeting.
• 10:31
Speaker 5: All right. We have a story, and I know you're
• 10:33
Speaker 5: on a tight schedule. We have a story posted this morning, wvmetronews.com.
• 10:36
Speaker 5: President Trump has approved federal individual assistance funding for a
• 10:41
Speaker 5: few counties after the August flood, including Kanawha.
• 10:43
  Speaker 3: Your thoughts?
• 10:44
Speaker 6: So I received an email last night. It was probably 7.40 p.m.
• 10:48
Speaker 6: And it got the news that it was approved. So
• 10:51
Speaker 6: more details to follow. That's what the email said to me.
• 10:53
Speaker 6: You know, C.W. Sigmund was notified by emergency management that
• 10:56
Speaker 6: the FEMA applications were approved. We're going to get the funding,
• 10:59
Speaker 6: individual assistance, and there's more details to follow. So that's
• 11:02
Speaker 6: kind of where we are with that. I wish I
• 11:04
Speaker 6: had more. I wish I could tell you, you know,
• 11:07
Speaker 6: outline it. But that's what we're working on right now.
• 11:09
Speaker 5: I mean, literally, the story in the declaration is just
• 11:11
Speaker 5: a little over 12 hours old at this point. And
• 11:13
Speaker 5: Jack's got it posted. at wvmetronews.com if you want to
• 11:16
Speaker 5: go check that out.
• 11:18
Speaker 6: That's a big deal, though. We're glad that that happened.
• 11:19
Speaker 6: It's a very big deal. Yeah, we're very, very glad
• 11:21
Speaker 6: that that happened. And honestly, it takes so much effort
• 11:24
Speaker 6: to get that declaration. The residents have to fill out
• 11:28
Speaker 6: the forms. We have to do a lot of work
• 11:30
Speaker 6: to get it. But it makes it easier as far
• 11:37
Speaker 6: as getting money to the people and providing some relief.
• 11:42
Speaker 5: All right. What else have you got in the last
• 11:44
Speaker 5: minute or so we have? What else is on your agenda?
• 11:46
Speaker 6: So, oh, wow. There's been a lot going on. We've
• 11:49
Speaker 6: got the groundbreaking for, or not the groundbreaking, the ribbon
• 11:53
Speaker 6: cutting for the Leatherwood Water Project, which is around a
• 11:56
Speaker 6: $ 9 million project. It's going to service nearly 100 residents
• 12:02
Speaker 6: up towards the Clendenin area. There's going to be 23,
• 12:05
Speaker 6: 24 fire hydrants. That project has been in motion for
• 12:10
Speaker 6: a long, long time, since before I was on the commission.
• 12:13
Speaker 6: So in excess of 10 years, we've been working on
• 12:15
Speaker 6: that project. Finally, it's going to happen. So thank you,
• 12:19
Speaker 6: Senator Capito. She made that happen. She went to bat
• 12:22
Speaker 6: for them, got us the funding. The governor's office provided
• 12:26
Speaker 6: some funding as well, which we truly appreciate. The county
• 12:29
Speaker 6: can't pay for it. I mean, it's just too expensive.
• 12:31
Speaker 6: There's no way we can do these projects without federal
• 12:34
Speaker 6: and state assistance. So we've got that one coming up.
• 12:36
Speaker 6: We're getting ready to break ground on Alcott. A promise
• 12:40
Speaker 6: I made back in 2017, I believe it was in
• 12:42
Speaker 6: the summer of 2017 at the Alcott Baptist Church, that
• 12:46
Speaker 6: one's moving forward. Now, think about how long it took
• 12:48
Speaker 6: just to go through the— And what is— explain that to people.
• 12:50
Speaker 6: Alcott Water, it's an area in Kanawha County that didn't
• 12:55
Speaker 6: have public water. And so— and they don't have fire hydrants.
• 12:58
Speaker 6: They don't have those— And explain to people where this
• 13:00
Speaker 6: is exactly. It's up out Corridor G. Like, if you're
• 13:03
Speaker 6: going out Corridor G, you're heading towards Lincoln County.
• 13:05
Speaker 5: It's in that area.
• 13:06
Speaker 6: So— we've got that, that the planning took forever and
• 13:12
Speaker 6: there were a lot of issues, but the water company
• 13:14
Speaker 6: is actually helping us a lot with that project. We've got, uh, some, some, uh,
• 13:18
Speaker 6: federal funding, uh, and, you know, thankfully it's happening, you know,
• 13:23
Speaker 6: we're getting ready to break ground on that. So it
• 13:24
Speaker 6: took us, uh, just the planning stage was almost 10 years,
• 13:28
Speaker 6: which is incredible, but you know, we're going to make
• 13:32
Speaker 6: it happen. My, my, my dear friend, Eddie Belcher, who's, who's, uh,
• 13:37
Speaker 6: no longer with us. He is the one that got
• 13:39
Speaker 6: me out to the Alcott Baptist Church, and he wore
• 13:42
Speaker 6: me out until I agreed to support it. And here
• 13:45
  Speaker 6: we are. So Eddie's, I'm sure Eddie's looking down. He's
• 13:48
  Speaker 6: very happy.
• 13:49
Speaker 5: Good stuff. County Commission President Ben Salengo, appreciate you being here.
• 13:52
Speaker 6: Thanks for having me.

• 17:14
Speaker 5: studio is Karen Ford, president of the, and I'm going
• 17:17
Speaker 5: to let you give the whole title. So Karen, I'm
• 17:19
Speaker 5: going to let you give the whole title. What are
• 17:21
  Speaker 5: you president of?
• 17:22
  Speaker 7: Yeah, right.
• 17:22
Speaker 2: Well, it's called the Friends of Spring Hill Cemetery Park
• 17:26
Speaker 2: and the Mary Price Rat Tree Arboretum.
• 17:29
Speaker 5: Okay. Now explain who.
• 17:31
Speaker 7: Mary Price Rat Tree.
• 17:35
Speaker 2: Her maiden name was Dickinson and it was the Dickinson
• 17:39
Speaker 2: Salt family. And for a while she had a, garden
• 17:43
Speaker 2: center called Terra Salas, where the salt industry is now,
• 17:49
Speaker 2: where they've started it. So she was very interested in
• 17:53
Speaker 2: having an arboretum in Charleston. And we finally got, finally
• 17:56
  Speaker 2: made it happen.
• 17:57
  Speaker 5: Okay.
• 17:58
  Speaker 2: All right.
• 17:58
Speaker 5: And you've got a big event coming up and we
• 18:01
Speaker 5: want to talk about that. It's on Sunday, right?
• 18:03
  Speaker 13: Yes.
• 18:03
Speaker 7: It's a Sunday from one to four. It's free. You
• 18:07
Speaker 7: just come up to the cemetery. We try to do
• 18:11
Speaker 7: this once a year.
• 18:11
Speaker 2: We, The whole purpose of Friends, which is a volunteer organization,
• 18:18
Speaker 2: is to do things to promote the beauty of the
• 18:21
Speaker 2: cemetery and the history. So if you come up to
• 18:24
Speaker 2: the cemetery, you have beautiful views of Charleston. And a
• 18:28
Speaker 2: lot of the founding fathers are buried there. And so
• 18:31
Speaker 2: it's a great place to do West Virginia history and
• 18:35
Speaker 2: local history. This year, we're kind of trying to do
• 18:39
Speaker 2: a little bit of celebration of the anniversary of the
• 18:42
Speaker 2: United States, and we're having some frontiersmen. They're going to
• 18:46
Speaker 2: have a camp, and they're on their way to Point
• 18:48
Speaker 2: Pleasant like they were in 1774.
• 18:49
  Speaker 7: Thomas Ingalls, who.
• 18:56
Speaker 7: Is an ancestor of Dr. John Hale. Dr. John Hale
• 19:00
Speaker 7: was sort of the Renaissance man of his age.
• 19:03
Speaker 2: He was a doctor. He was a historian. He was
• 19:06
Speaker 2: a writer. He is an inventor. He did the brick streets,
• 19:10
Speaker 2: all kinds of activities in Charleston. So this man, we'll
• 19:14
Speaker 2: talk a little bit about his mom, who was Mary Ingalls,
• 19:18
Speaker 2: and his relationship to Dr.
• 19:20
  Speaker 9: Hale.
• 19:24
Speaker 2: Jane Ferguson, who have a lot of people don't know
• 19:27
Speaker 2: who that is. That's Booker T. Washington's mom. She is
• 19:30
Speaker 2: going to stop by so you can stop and listen
• 19:34
Speaker 2: to her. She will tell her story. We like to
• 19:40
Speaker 2: think that she's buried there. We haven't been able to
• 19:43
Speaker 2: prove it, but we're still working on it because they
• 19:45
Speaker 2: moved the graves from Malden to the cemetery during World
• 19:48
  Speaker 2: War Two.
• 19:50
  Speaker 8: II.
• 19:50
Speaker 5: If you don't mind my asking, why did they move?
• 19:55
Speaker 2: Well, they decided for some reason they needed a bigger highway,
• 19:59
Speaker 2: a wider highway to get to the chemical plant in
• 20:02
Speaker 2: DuPont faster. So that happens frequently. George Summers, who was
• 20:08
Speaker 2: another man He's not going to be here Sunday, but
• 20:13
Speaker 2: his cemetery in Putnam County was moved because the power
• 20:18
Speaker 2: company wanted to go through the cemetery. So that happens
• 20:21
Speaker 2: every now and then.
• 20:22
Speaker 5: It happens a lot, yeah.
• 20:23
Speaker 2: Moses Frankenberger, who's going to be there, and he will
• 20:27
Speaker 2: talk about his experiences as a Hebrew being welcomed in
• 20:33
Speaker 2: this area and the things that happened to him during
• 20:36
Speaker 2: the Civil War and the things he did after the
• 20:39
  Speaker 2: Civil War.
• 20:39
  Speaker 11: He.
• 20:40
Speaker 7: Lost his money. The Army took it.
• 20:44
Speaker 2: But after that, he got back into business and ended
• 20:47
Speaker 2: up donating money to Christian churches to build their churches
• 20:51
Speaker 2: again or repair churches, whichever the case.
• 20:54
  Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
• 20:56
Speaker 2: Charles Lewis, who was, this is back to 1774 kind
• 21:02
Speaker 2: of thing. Charles Lewis's older brother, Andrew Lewis, led a
• 21:07
Speaker 2: group of men, a militia, from Greenberg County to Point Pleasant.
• 21:10
Speaker 2: And Charles was with him. And Charles was killed in
• 21:13
Speaker 2: the Battle of Point Pleasant. His widow is going to
• 21:16
Speaker 2: be visiting with us. And she later married Lewis. And
• 21:20
Speaker 2: we have this fantastic story. A monument that is a tree,
• 21:25
Speaker 2: and it is huge, and it has lots of funeral
• 21:29
Speaker 2: art on it. Plus, they've peeled back the bark. This
• 21:31
Speaker 2: was done in stone. They've peeled the bark back and
• 21:35
Speaker 2: written the name Lewis. So that'll be nice. And then
• 21:39
Speaker 2: Colonel Appleton. Colonel Appleton led African-American troops during the Civil War,
• 21:49
Speaker 2: and he will be stopping by. And one of the
• 21:51
Speaker 2: other ones, which was real new, is Julia Staunton Clark,
• 21:59
Speaker 2: who is Murder on Staunton Road. And she will be explaining.
• 22:03
Speaker 2: I'm not sure what all we're going to learn from her,
• 22:06
Speaker 2: but she will be there. Plus, we're going to have
• 22:08
Speaker 2: people from the Division of Forestry, the local bird club.
• 22:12
Speaker 2: The cemetery is a high point, and we have a
• 22:15
Speaker 2: lot of migration. We have bees, and the state.
• 22:20
Speaker 2: Aviary person, well, not aviary, apiarist will be there with
• 22:24
Speaker 2: a local real hive.
• 22:26
  Speaker 7: Colonel Wood, who.
• 22:27
Speaker 2: Has a home in Kanawha City, who's also in the
• 22:30
Speaker 2: salt industry, will stop by. Capital Conservation, Humanities Council, Bird Club,
• 22:38
Speaker 2: all kinds of different things that you might be interested in.
• 22:42
Speaker 2: You may have questions about what to do with when to...
• 22:46
Speaker 2: trim a shrub or what about this tree? They will
• 22:49
Speaker 2: be available to answer your questions. So you get to
• 22:53
Speaker 2: the cemetery and you just take your time walking around
• 22:56
Speaker 2: and you can stop at all of them or you
• 22:58
Speaker 2: can just stop at one or two of them.
• 22:59
  Speaker 7: It's okay.
• 23:00
Speaker 5: How many, I mean, how do you go about organizing?
• 23:03
Speaker 5: Because you sit here and you've mentioned, I mean, half
• 23:06
Speaker 5: of the Kanawha Valley, people out of the past that
• 23:09
Speaker 5: are going to be there. And these people that are
• 23:10
Speaker 5: portraying these people out of the past, I mean, How
• 23:13
Speaker 5: do you go about doing a casting call for all
• 23:15
  Speaker 5: these people?
• 23:16
Speaker 2: Well, you just put the word out sort of that, hey,
• 23:19
Speaker 2: we'd like to have so-and-so here this year. We've had
• 23:26
Speaker 2: Rachel Grant Tompkins for a couple of years, and we
• 23:28
Speaker 2: gave her a year off. She's President Grant's aunt. Her
• 23:34
Speaker 2: brother was President Grant's. And she doesn't speak very highly
• 23:39
Speaker 2: of her brother. But it's very interesting. They ended up
• 23:44
Speaker 2: moving out of Charleston up to Cedar Grove, and that
• 23:46
Speaker 2: was their estate. And their daughter went to the academy
• 23:51
Speaker 2: in Lewisburg, and they said, oh, this is exciting. What
• 23:53
Speaker 2: do you want for graduation? And she said, I wanted
• 23:56
Speaker 2: a chapel. So the Virginia Chapel that's right there on
• 23:59
Speaker 2: Route 60 was the gift that they gave her. During
• 24:05
Speaker 2: the Civil War, um mr grant and mr tompkins had
• 24:09
Speaker 2: died and rachel was there with teenage-ish age girls tina
• 24:15
Speaker 2: and then there were all these young men's in uniform
• 24:18
Speaker 2: camping on her front yard so she had a time
• 24:23
Speaker 2: keeping those people those guys and teenage girls and the
• 24:27
Speaker 2: young man to separate it.
• 24:28
Speaker 7: So that's kind of a fun story to hear.
• 24:31
Speaker 2: And her husband was the first person to use natural
• 24:33
Speaker 2: gas in the processing of salt.
• 24:36
Speaker 5: I mean, the thing about all this is, is there
• 24:39
Speaker 5: are people right now. that are probably hearing some of
• 24:42
Speaker 5: these stories for the first time and are not realizing
• 24:44
Speaker 5: that all this incredible history is right around here in
• 24:47
  Speaker 5: the Charleston area.
• 24:48
  Speaker 7: It's just fascinating.
• 24:50
  Speaker 2: I mean, I'm not a native Kanawha Countian, but I've
• 24:53
Speaker 2: gotten here and I've learned I'm a history person. And
• 24:56
Speaker 2: it's just like everybody has a story. And we try
• 24:59
Speaker 2: to do things on the people as well as the monuments.
• 25:02
Speaker 2: We have one pyramid monument. And it looks like a pyramid.
• 25:08
Speaker 7: It's not very big.
• 25:10
Speaker 2: And the story with that is that the devil cannot
• 25:12
Speaker 2: sit on your grave. He can't sit on that point.
• 25:16
Speaker 2: Now that, that's kind of a fun thing to know.
• 25:18
Speaker 7: We have another one.
• 25:19
Speaker 2: It looks like a tootsie roll. That's what I call it.
• 25:21
Speaker 2: It's a roll monument. And on it are the man's,
• 25:26
Speaker 2: you have to go look it up, but he's written
• 25:28
Speaker 2: his patent numbers. And he has invented two different processing
• 25:35
  Speaker 2: of leather.
• 25:37
Speaker 7: That's kind of cool.
• 25:37
  Speaker 5: I mean, really.
• 25:38
Speaker 7: That's kind of cool. I mean, you know, who would
• 25:40
Speaker 7: have thought? And we have one lady.
• 25:42
Speaker 2: Who was the first female to do a film. And
• 25:45
Speaker 2: it was a silent film. It was about Teddy Roosevelt.
• 25:49
  Speaker 1: All right here.
• 25:50
  Speaker 10: Right here.
• 25:51
Speaker 5: In the Kanawha Valley. We had a text here that said,
• 25:53
Speaker 5: it would be nice if Spring Hill Cemetery had a
• 25:55
Speaker 5: large directional and locator map pointing you in the direction
• 25:58
Speaker 5: of where historic graves are located when you first drive
• 26:01
Speaker 5: in like Arlington Cemetery has.
• 26:03
  Speaker 13: Well.
• 26:04
Speaker 7: We're trying to get into the 21st century. Slowly.
• 26:07
  Speaker 3: Slowly.
• 26:08
Speaker 2: And we do have done, what we have done was
• 26:12
Speaker 2: we've done five walking tours. And that have, depending on
• 26:17
Speaker 2: the color of the brochure you pick up, you'll follow
• 26:20
Speaker 2: those color numbers. And that will lead you around and
• 26:24
Speaker 2: give you information about other people. We're putting them online.
• 26:27
Speaker 2: So if you'd go to Spring Hill Cemetery Park website
• 26:32
Speaker 2: and then Click over here. It says friends. It'll and
• 26:35
  Speaker 2: click on down.
• 26:36
Speaker 7: It'll give you that. Those are online.
• 26:38
Speaker 2: Now, we're trying to get the money to do where
• 26:42
Speaker 2: you could just have an audio tour. You can do
• 26:45
Speaker 2: it on your iPhone, but it's not audio. What we'd
• 26:48
Speaker 2: like to. Does that make sense? We'd like to be
• 26:51
Speaker 2: where you go to a lot of parks or historical
• 26:53
Speaker 2: sites and you just download it and you hear somebody
• 26:56
Speaker 2: telling you the story.
• 26:57
  Speaker 6: OK.
• 26:58
Speaker 2: But we have five. We have an angel walk. We
• 27:02
Speaker 2: have some gorgeous angels up there. The Shrewsburys, who came
• 27:06
Speaker 2: to town with the Dickensons, were partners in salt. They
• 27:09
Speaker 2: have tablets, which is like a, it fits over the grave,
• 27:14
Speaker 2: and they are absolutely gorgeous. We found them under three
• 27:18
Speaker 2: inches of dirt, but their hand, it's like somebody, when
• 27:22
Speaker 2: you learn to write cursive, it's cursive.
• 27:24
Speaker 7: Now, can you imagine trying to cursive write.
• 27:27
  Speaker 2: On a stone, and the 18... Like early 1800s. I
• 27:31
Speaker 2: don't know how people did that.
• 27:35
Speaker 7: Instead of just chiseling.
• 27:36
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 27:37
Speaker 7: This is like scourge writing on it.
• 27:40
Speaker 2: And one son, they've written a 23rd Psalm on top
• 27:44
Speaker 2: of his monument. So that's, it is beautiful. But it's
• 27:48
Speaker 2: mind-boggling that people could do that.
• 27:51
Speaker 5: We've got another text here. You're popular. It says, is
• 27:53
Speaker 5: the Pet Sematary still there? My father was a gravedigger
• 27:56
Speaker 5: and overnight watchman there for the city of Charleston for years.
• 28:00
Speaker 7: Not that I know of.
• 28:02
Speaker 2: Yeah, they don't really encourage that right this minute, but
• 28:08
Speaker 2: that would be fine with me. Because my dogs go
• 28:11
Speaker 2: up there all the time.
• 28:11
Speaker 5: Well, I guess they're saying that there was a pet cemetery.
• 28:14
  Speaker 7: I don't know that. I don't know.
• 28:16
Speaker 2: I know there was one little monument that is in
• 28:21
Speaker 2: the section that the city just bought that was another
• 28:26
Speaker 2: cemetery has a monument to a dog. But that's the
• 28:29
Speaker 2: only thing I know.
• 28:30
Speaker 5: Okay. So the event is going to be on Sunday.
• 28:34
  Speaker 7: Sunday 11th. Okay.
• 28:35
Speaker 5: Now, I got to throw this out there. I don't
• 28:36
Speaker 5: want to give you any negative vibes or anything, but
• 28:39
  Speaker 5: there's a chance of rain.
• 28:40
  Speaker 7: I know.
• 28:40
Speaker 5: I know. We'll work with Brian Hughes on that. I'm
• 28:43
  Speaker 5: just saying.
• 28:44
  Speaker 7: Yeah, right.
• 28:45
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 28:45
  Speaker 8: But, I mean.
• 28:46
  Speaker 2: Unless it's a downpour, then we won't. But if it's
• 28:49
  Speaker 2: a drizzle, yeah.
• 28:50
  Speaker 10: Okay.
• 28:51
Speaker 7: I mean, we've got people coming in.
• 28:53
Speaker 5: It would be very, very hard, I mean, because you've
• 28:55
Speaker 5: got so many people that are coming in.
• 28:56
Speaker 2: I've got people coming in from Princeton area. I've got
• 28:58
Speaker 2: horses coming in from Roan County. Yeah, it's going to
• 29:02
Speaker 2: be hard to get the word out, not to come.
• 29:04
Speaker 2: Other people are, most of them are kind of in
• 29:07
  Speaker 2: the area, closer.
• 29:09
Speaker 5: Okay, all right. And where's the best place that people want?
• 29:12
Speaker 5: You hit up the website, social media.
• 29:14
Speaker 7: Where can people go?
• 29:16
Speaker 2: Right, they can go to the Spring Hill Cemetery Park website.
• 29:19
Speaker 5: What is the website? Spring Hill, what is the website?
• 29:22
  Speaker 7: It is springhillscemetery.com.
• 29:26
Speaker 5: Or you can Google it. Okay, go ahead. Make sure
• 29:28
Speaker 5: you put West Virginia in there because there's a lot
• 29:29
Speaker 5: of Spring Hill Cemetery.
• 29:30
Speaker 7: Yeah, there's a Spring Hill Cemetery in Huntington.
• 29:33
  Speaker 6: Sure, yeah.
• 29:34
Speaker 2: The Facebook page has it, and they can always call
• 29:38
Speaker 2: the cemetery office and ask questions.
• 29:40
  Speaker 7: That they have.
• 29:41
Speaker 2: You just drive up Farnsworth, and there will be people
• 29:44
Speaker 2: there to help you park.
• 29:45
Speaker 5: It would be a great educational experience for the kids,
• 29:48
Speaker 5: you know, to come.
• 29:48
Speaker 2: Out and learn. It is, and we've got a Civil
• 29:52
Speaker 2: War soldier coming, and he's going to explain some of
• 29:55
Speaker 2: the things that the— artillery and the guns they used.
• 30:00
Speaker 2: Our frontiersmen have muskets. We're going to have a musket
• 30:03
Speaker 2: loading demonstration on how you would load a musket. You
• 30:07
Speaker 2: can't just pull the trigger on one of those. And
• 30:11
Speaker 2: we're having a maple syrup testing.
• 30:13
Speaker 5: Now you're talking my language.
• 30:15
Speaker 7: And a juice truck.
• 30:16
  Speaker 5: Okay.
• 30:18
Speaker 2: So you'll be able to get something to drink. But, yeah,
• 30:21
  Speaker 2: I'm excited.
• 30:22
Speaker 5: 11 o'clock, and it happens on Sunday. Karen Ford. Appreciate
• 30:26
Speaker 5: you being on the show today. Well, thank you very much.
• 30:28
Speaker 5: You've brought a lot of knowledge.
• 30:29
Speaker 7: Yeah, well, thank you. I enjoy talking about it.
• 30:32
Speaker 5: Well, anytime you want to come back on the show,
• 30:33
Speaker 5: you're more than welcome, because this stuff fascinates me, man.
• 30:35
Speaker 5: I mean, this history stuff.
• 30:36
Speaker 7: Oh, okay. Well, boy, I have stories I can tell.
• 30:39
Speaker 5: Well, when you walked in here, you'd never been here before,
• 30:42
Speaker 5: and you walked into the studio, and you were talking about,
• 30:45
Speaker 5: you even knew something about the building.
• 30:47
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 30:48
Speaker 7: Yeah, this is Moses Frankenberger's house.
• 30:50
Speaker 5: This is a Frankenberger mansion, as they call it, and
• 30:53
Speaker 5: they say it's haunted.
• 30:54
Speaker 2: That's why, yeah, I was getting ready to say, well,
• 30:56
Speaker 2: I've heard that he had an illegitimate child and the
• 31:00
Speaker 2: maid and the child were in the attic or something.
• 31:02
  Speaker 7: And I don't know where I heard that, but I
• 31:04
  Speaker 7: don't know.
• 31:05
Speaker 5: I mean, it's kind of legendary in this building. I mean,
• 31:08
Speaker 5: for people that have worked here in the past.
• 31:10
Speaker 2: And what is the, how do you know it's haunted?
• 31:14
Speaker 5: I mean, there have been, I'm not a big believer
• 31:18
Speaker 5: in this stuff, to be honest with you, but there
• 31:20
Speaker 5: have been people over the years that have, seen and
• 31:22
Speaker 5: heard strange things in the attic.
• 31:24
  Speaker 2: Uh-huh.
• 31:25
Speaker 5: And it's not just the air staff. I mean, we're
• 31:27
Speaker 5: strange enough, but I mean, a different kind of other
• 31:30
Speaker 5: world kind of strange. Well, So maybe we'll do a
• 31:34
Speaker 5: little research on that for you.
• 31:35
  Speaker 13: Yeah.
• 31:35
Speaker 5: Maybe we'll invite the spirit.
• 31:37
Speaker 7: Yeah, when Bright Moses will come and talk about it.
• 31:40
Speaker 5: There you go. Karen, appreciate you being here.
• 31:42
Speaker 7: Thank you very much.

Speaker 5: Bank Hotline, 304-345-5858. Tony Vitello, text 304-935-5008. I'm always a little,
• 35:39
Speaker 5: you know, I'm very interested in history. I mean, obviously,
• 35:43
Speaker 5: I don't know why, even as a kid, this stuff
• 35:46
Speaker 5: fascinated me. And I love having people like Karen on
• 35:49
Speaker 5: the show to talk about the history because there is
• 35:51
Speaker 5: so much history that's right under our noses that we
• 35:54
Speaker 5: don't even Now, I'm going to just tell you, okay,
• 35:57
Speaker 5: I'm just going to throw this out here. As we
• 35:59
Speaker 5: head into the spooky season, I am not a person
• 36:03
Speaker 5: that believes in the occult, in ghosts, or anything of
• 36:07
Speaker 5: that nature. So you're going to lose me. I don't
• 36:10
Speaker 5: mind hearing the funny stories. We were talking about how
• 36:12
Speaker 5: the building here, the old Frankenberger Mansion, where we are,
• 36:15
Speaker 5: 1111 Virginia Street East in Charleston, about how it's haunted
• 36:19
Speaker 5: and so on. And look, if that's your thing, That's
• 36:21
Speaker 5: your thing. A lot of people don't understand my fascination
• 36:24
Speaker 5: with sports and food as well. But it's just never
• 36:29
Speaker 5: been my thing. I've never believed in any of that stuff. And,
• 36:32
Speaker 5: you know, I mean, down in Logan County, where I'm from,
• 36:34
Speaker 5: the whole thing was about Mamie Thurman. If you don't
• 36:36
Speaker 5: know who that is, you may want to Google it.
• 36:38
  Speaker 5: And there's a section of a mountain on the Logan-Mingo
• 36:41
Speaker 5: County line that supposedly you could pull to the bottom
• 36:44
Speaker 5: and put your car in a certain, you know, from
• 36:48
Speaker 5: like in a neutral and it automatically goes backwards or
• 36:51
Speaker 5: something like that. I do not believe in any of
• 36:54
Speaker 5: that stuff. I'm sorry. If you do, that's great for you,
• 36:58
Speaker 5: but I do not believe in anything like that at all.
• 37:02
Speaker 5: Never have and probably never will. But if that's your thing,
• 37:05
Speaker 5: so be it. We had a text for County Commission
• 37:08
Speaker 5: President Ben Salango, and unfortunately he just stepped out, but
• 37:10
Speaker 5: I did get an answer from him. The text was
• 37:13
Speaker 5: for Salango, do you think the County Commission could put
• 37:16
Speaker 5: together a list of reliable, fair, honest contractors and utilities
• 37:20
Speaker 5: specifically for people that are rebuilding with FEMA. We had
• 37:23
Speaker 5: our bridge supports replaced and basically got scammed out of $ 7, 000,
• 37:27
Speaker 5: and they didn't really do much of anything. As I said,
• 37:31
Speaker 5: that text unfortunately came after Commissioner Salengo had left, but
• 37:35
Speaker 5: I did get in touch with him. The problem with that,
• 37:37
Speaker 5: it's a great idea in theory, but for a governmental agency,
• 37:42
Speaker 5: like the Kanawha County Commission or any other, to go
• 37:45
Speaker 5: about doing a list of fair and reliable, honest contractors,
• 37:50
Speaker 5: that's not really something a governmental agency can do. Now,
• 37:52
Speaker 5: that having been said, if you have questions about whether
• 37:56
Speaker 5: somebody is a reputable company and paid their licensing, as
• 38:00
Speaker 5: far as that goes for a registered contractor, that information
• 38:02
Speaker 5: is readily available, you know, from the Secretary of State's
• 38:05
Speaker 5: website under the business division. But to ask for, you know,
• 38:09
Speaker 5: And I understand, look, we've all been there. We all
• 38:12
Speaker 5: completely understand what you're saying. The words reliable, fair, honest contractors,
• 38:17
Speaker 5: that's very subjective. And it would be very, very hard,
• 38:21
Speaker 5: according to Commissioner Salango, and I would agree with him.
• 38:24
Speaker 5: Although it is a good idea in theory, it would
• 38:26
Speaker 5: be very, very hard to do something like that without
• 38:30
Speaker 5: a governmental agency showing some sort of favoritism. Understand that.
• 38:34
Speaker 5: Understand the concern, though. Coming up later today, Metro News Midday,
• 38:37
Speaker 5: powered by Selangor Law, Amanda Barron and me on the show,
• 38:40
Speaker 5: of course. Amelia Nicely from West Virginia Watch is going
• 38:43
Speaker 5: to stop by. Interesting story that was published at West
• 38:46
Speaker 5: Virginia Watch yesterday. Amelia tells the story of a couple,
• 38:50
Speaker 5: actually a couple of West Virginia mothers who were told
• 38:54
Speaker 5: that they cannot receive child care assistance and operate an
• 38:57
Speaker 5: LLC at the same time. So we're going to talk
• 39:02
Speaker 5: about that. I read that story. yesterday and kind of
• 39:04
Speaker 5: reviewed it this morning and asked Amelia to come on
• 39:06
Speaker 5: the show. So she's going to join us on the
• 39:08
Speaker 5: show today. Hoppy Kirchival is going to stop by. He's
• 39:11
Speaker 5: got commentary this morning posted at wvmetronews.com. And it is about,
• 39:16
Speaker 5: in part, my homeland of Logan County doing something almost
• 39:20
Speaker 5: unthinkable 20 years ago. And we talked about it on
• 39:23
Speaker 5: the show a little yesterday, flipping from a Democratic Party
• 39:26
Speaker 5: majority to a Republican county. This has been a slow progression.
• 39:32
Speaker 5: And now, and I did not, as I mentioned earlier,
• 39:34
Speaker 5: I did not realize this until I talked to longtime
• 39:37
Speaker 5: Logan County Clerk John Turner, that every elected position in
• 39:41
Speaker 5: Logan County is now held by a Republican. And they
• 39:44
Speaker 5: weren't Republicans when they went into office. I mean, maybe
• 39:49
Speaker 5: a couple were, but I can tell you that the
• 39:52
Speaker 5: majority of them were not, especially ones that had been
• 39:55
Speaker 5: in office for a long, long time, including the county clerk,
• 39:58
Speaker 5: John Turner, who was elected as a Democrat. So Hoppe
• 40:01
Speaker 5: weighs in on that. WVMetroNews.com if you want to read
• 40:04
Speaker 5: the commentary ahead of time. will join us to talk
• 40:06
Speaker 5: about that on the show. Also, Jason Pizzatella from the
• 40:09
Speaker 5: Contractors Association is going to stop by. That's all coming
• 40:11
Speaker 5: up at noon today. On this show, as I mentioned,
• 40:14
Speaker 5: tomorrow we're going to get a visit from Angie Gillenwater
• 40:16
Speaker 5: from the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association with this week's Adopt Me,
• 40:20
Speaker 5: Please Spend of the Week, sponsored by Almost Heaven Interiors.
• 40:22
Speaker 5: Joyce Brown, who is a candidate for a House of
• 40:25
Speaker 5: Delegates in District 52 on the Democrat side, is going
• 40:29
Speaker 5: to join me. And Andy Blackwood will stop by as well.
• 40:32
Speaker 5: He is with Habitat for Humanity. They have another just
• 40:34
Speaker 5: actually Heard the commercial for it during the break there.
• 40:37
Speaker 5: They have another Taste of Event. This one featuring the
• 40:41
Speaker 5: Fly-In Cafe out of Huntington. Now, it's going to be
• 40:43
Speaker 5: happening on October the 20th at the Bill Ngo Flight
• 40:46
Speaker 5: School up at West Virginia International Yeager Airport. So we're
• 40:49
Speaker 5: going to talk about that and more coming up on
• 40:52
Speaker 5: tomorrow's show. Speaking of candidates, I do want to throw
• 40:55
Speaker 5: this out here now that we are a month or
• 40:56
Speaker 5: so away from the general election. As you know, ever
• 40:59
Speaker 5: since I started doing this show six years ago, I've
• 41:03
Speaker 5: always offered a time for candidates to come on the show.
• 41:07
Speaker 5: And it's not a gotcha kind of thing. It's basically,
• 41:10
Speaker 5: who are you? Why are you running? What do you
• 41:12
Speaker 5: hope to do to be elected kind of thing? It's
• 41:15
Speaker 5: just an opportunity for voters to educate themselves a little
• 41:19
Speaker 5: bit more. I ask mostly the same questions of every candidate.
• 41:23
Speaker 5: Those I just mentioned, who are you? Why are you running?
• 41:25
Speaker 5: What do you see as the biggest needs if you're
• 41:27
Speaker 5: running for county commission or whatever you're happy to be
• 41:30
Speaker 5: running for? But I say that to say this is
• 41:33
Speaker 5: because now's the time when these candidates, like the one
• 41:35
Speaker 5: I'm going to have on tomorrow, are starting to reach
• 41:37
Speaker 5: out to me. Well, there's only so much time available.
• 41:41
Speaker 5: And everybody says, well, I want to go on when
• 41:44
Speaker 5: early voting starts, 10 days before the election. I want
• 41:46
Speaker 5: to go on the day before the election. Well, I
• 41:48
Speaker 5: can't accommodate everybody going on just when they want to.
• 41:52
Speaker 5: So I will offer up the space, but you got
• 41:55
Speaker 5: to reach out to me. all right, and just let
• 41:57
Speaker 5: me know. Best way to do that is just drop
• 42:00
  Speaker 5: me an email, dave.allen at wvradio.com. It's dave.allen at wvradio.com.
• 42:07
Speaker 5: Drop me an email. If you want to be on
• 42:08
Speaker 5: the show, I'll give you 10 to 15 minutes just
• 42:11
Speaker 5: as a basic bio on you.
• 42:13
  Speaker 17: Who are you?
• 42:13
Speaker 5: Why are you running? What do you want to do
• 42:15
Speaker 5: if elected? Give you an opportunity to talk about upcoming events,
• 42:18
Speaker 5: your website if you have it, social media, so on
• 42:20
Speaker 5: and so forth. But you got to get on the
• 42:21
Speaker 5: schedule and get on it soon because The slots are
• 42:26
Speaker 5: booking quickly. I'll give one interview to any candidate that
• 42:30
Speaker 5: wants it free of charge. Drop me an email, dave.allen

• 46:08
Speaker 5: complete tangent on this. I do have some text to
• 46:10
Speaker 5: get to. Um, but you know, and it's, look, we're
• 46:13
Speaker 5: 53 minutes, 54 minutes into the show and we haven't
• 46:15
Speaker 5: said the words town center yet. Okay. That's, that's, that's
• 46:19
Speaker 5: my design, but I, but I did want to just
• 46:21
Speaker 5: comment on, on something. Uh, and, and it's all part
• 46:25
Speaker 5: of what I've read in this whole debate over, uh,
• 46:29
Speaker 5: the town center and, and when people talk about, you know,
• 46:32
Speaker 5: the town center going away and whatever the future or
• 46:35
Speaker 5: lack of is going to hold, they don't. Everybody remembers,
• 46:37
Speaker 5: as I said, present company included the glory days, and
• 46:40
Speaker 5: people constantly throw out, well, without the town center, what
• 46:45
Speaker 5: are we going to do? There's nothing to do in Charleston.
• 46:48
Speaker 5: There's nowhere to shop, and so on and so forth.
• 46:51
Speaker 5: I mean, in the words of my buddy, Pastor Marlon Collins,
• 46:57
Speaker 5: miss me with that. I was out of town last weekend,
• 47:02
Speaker 5: and there were three, at least that I know of,
• 47:07
Speaker 5: three major huge events that happened in Charleston in one
• 47:11
Speaker 5: day last Saturday. Now, they weren't shopping-related, so to speak.
• 47:16
Speaker 5: We had October West that happened yesterday. We had Mountaineers
• 47:21
Speaker 5: Night Out, I'm sorry, last Saturday. Mountaineers night out. And
• 47:25
Speaker 5: of course, you had the city center dead downtown. A
• 47:28
Speaker 5: lot of that stuff could be enjoyed as well for
• 47:30
Speaker 5: free to just come out. And so, you know, I
• 47:33
Speaker 5: just I don't get that, that there is nothing to
• 47:36
Speaker 5: do in the capital city of Charleston. There are so
• 47:39
Speaker 5: many activities. going on in Charleston, South Charleston, Taze Valley, Winview,
• 47:48
Speaker 5: I mean, you name it, that we can't possibly even
• 47:50
Speaker 5: mention them all. And we got more coming up next week.
• 47:53
Speaker 5: So I just don't really buy into that. Now, you
• 47:55
Speaker 5: can talk about the shopping all you want to. I
• 47:57
Speaker 5: happen to think there are some great places to shop,
• 48:00
Speaker 5: not only downtown Charleston, but the Kanawha Valley. Not everything
• 48:05
Speaker 5: has to come from a giant chain store. I'm just saying.
• 48:09
Speaker 5: And for that matter, how many people that are blaming
• 48:14
Speaker 5: the governmental officials, this administration, whatever, for the shutting down
• 48:20
Speaker 5: of the town center. How many of those actually stepped
• 48:22
Speaker 5: foot in the place over the last couple of years?
• 48:24
Speaker 5: I mean, think about it. I mean, just read all
• 48:28
Speaker 5: these comments. And it's like, when was the last time
• 48:31
Speaker 5: you were at the town center? I'm just throwing it
• 48:33
Speaker 5: out there. I mean, maybe if more people were coming there,
• 48:36
Speaker 5: it wouldn't have shut down. I'm just saying. Trick or

• 48:52
Speaker 5: our studio starting next week. DirtyBirdsBaseball.com, 107.3TheBeat.com if you need
• 48:57
Speaker 5: more information. Text Dave, when you have Angie on the
• 48:59
Speaker 5: show tomorrow, could you discuss the issue of dumping animals,
• 49:02
Speaker 5: not just at the shelter, but at the Fix-Em Clinic
• 49:04
Speaker 5: back on the day when they were closed, there was
• 49:07
Speaker 5: a cat in a carrier. left outside their parking area.
• 49:10
Speaker 5: And just yesterday, there was a dog dumped at the
• 49:12
Speaker 5: intersection of Route 119 and McCorkle that was picked up
• 49:15
Speaker 5: by a good person. This has to stop. This heartless
• 49:18
Speaker 5: dumping and abandoning of these animals who have done nothing
• 49:22
Speaker 5: to deserve is out of control. I 100, 100 percent agree.
• 49:27
Speaker 5: Text Dave, are the Republican politicians in Logan County really
• 49:30
Speaker 5: Republicans or rhinos just to get elected? Well, I mean,
• 49:33
Speaker 5: I don't know what the definition of a real Republican is.
• 49:35
Speaker 5: I will say this, and somebody pointed this out. I
• 49:38
Speaker 5: think it might have even been Mike Pushkin that pointed
• 49:39
Speaker 5: this out on the show at one point. People say, well,
• 49:41
Speaker 5: the Democrats controlled West Virginia for 83 years. True statement.
• 49:46
Speaker 5: But did the progressive liberals control West Virginia? No, they
• 49:50
Speaker 5: did not. Now, there were some here or there, but
• 49:53
Speaker 5: for the most part, the people down there haven't changed.
• 50:02
Speaker 5: It's the letters after the names changed. that have changed.
• 50:05
Speaker 5: And what I mean, what makes up what is now
• 50:09
Speaker 5: seen as the Democratic Party. And they just didn't want
• 50:11
Speaker 5: to be a part of it. So to answer your
• 50:13
Speaker 5: question as best I can, they've always been conservative down there.
• 50:17
Speaker 5: All of the things, the pro-life and so on and
• 50:20
Speaker 5: so forth, none of that has changed. It's just those
• 50:22
Speaker 5: things were welcomed in the Democratic Party at one point,
• 50:24
Speaker 5: and they no longer are. And that's why people have left.
• 50:27
Speaker 5: Right or wrong, you can agree, disagree with me. I'm
• 50:29
Speaker 5: just throwing it out there. Do you know why there
• 50:36
Speaker 5: are signs for magisterial candidates in Kanawha County? The nonpartisan
• 50:40
Speaker 5: election was in May. I am presuming, let me look
• 50:45
Speaker 5: into that. Let me answer that. I will look into that.
• 50:49
Speaker 5: Did you happen to hear House Speaker Hanshaw on TalkLine yesterday? Now,
• 50:54
Speaker 5: he's suggesting that the state made a mistake in withdrawing
• 50:57
Speaker 5: from consideration for federal nuclear hub initiatives, but does not
• 51:01
Speaker 5: say the potential for nuclear development has gone away forever.
• 51:05
Speaker 5: He calls it, quote, a temporary mistake that we can
• 51:09
Speaker 5: hopefully correct. Now, end quote. Sounds to me like Speaker
• 51:13
Speaker 5: Hanshaw throwing a little shade at the Morrissey administration. Hanshaw
• 51:17
Speaker 5: said during the interview with Wilson yesterday on TalkLine, he
• 51:20
Speaker 5: had not spoken with the Morrissey administration about the bid.
• 51:23
Speaker 5: I'm not a political insider here, but I'm going to
• 51:26
Speaker 5: say this as we close. We hear that a lot
• 51:28
Speaker 5: in the news. from people, elected officials in West Virginia,
• 51:31
Speaker 5: that they haven't spoken to the administration about it or
• 51:34
Speaker 5: the governor has not communicated with them. I'm not in
• 51:36
Speaker 5: those meetings. I don't know. I'm just saying it seems
• 51:38
Speaker 5: to be a recurring theme. Just throwing it out there.
• 51:42
  Speaker 7: All right.
• 51:43
  Speaker 3: Got to go.
• 51:43
Speaker 5: Ryan Nicholson, thank you so much for producing this here
• 51:47
Speaker 5: thing today. Tomorrow, Angie Gilliwater, Kanawha Charleston Humane Association with
• 51:49
Speaker 5: our almost seven interiors. Adopt Me, Please, Spend of the Week,
• 51:52
Speaker 5: House Canada, Joyce Brown on the show, and more on
• 51:54
Speaker 5: this upcoming Taste event up at the Bill No Flight School.
• 51:57
Speaker 5: of the airport. See you later today on Midday. Until then,
• 51:59
Speaker 5: have fun and love somebody.
• 52:14
Speaker 1: We're proud to live here too.
