Ep. 103. Who are the New Avengers in Marvel Comics?! · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

• 0:19
Hi guys, it's Megan from Vigilante Vibes and by now you
• 0:23
are probably sick of hearing the name The New Avengers.
• 0:28
And I get it, I get it. It's everywhere since Marvel, I
• 0:33
  guess. Spoiler alert I guess.
• 0:35
I guess since Marvel went and spoiled that the asterisk and
• 0:39
Thunderbolts actually means the New Avengers like two days after
• 0:44
the movie premiered. Which was a choice.
• 0:48
Not a choice I'd agree with, but I don't work for Marvel So what
• 0:53
can you do? But who are the New Avengers?
• 0:56
We know who they are in the MCU now, but who are they in the
• 0:58
comic books? So I have a quick breakdown of
• 1:02
them and I will explain how they formed, who's on the teams, and
• 1:07
I have comics at the end that you can check out.
• 1:10
And it is a lot. It is quite the task to learn
• 1:14
all about the New Avengers, but it is a fun task and I highly
• 1:18
recommend it. So The Avengers first came
• 1:23
together when Loki's antics forced some of the Earth's
• 1:25
strongest heroes to team up Iron Man, Wasp, Pulk, Ant Man and
• 1:30
Thor Jordan forces to take down the Trickster God and protect
• 1:34
their world. Since then, different Avenger
• 1:36
squads like West Coast Avengers, the Young Avengers have stepped
• 1:41
up when needed. But that begs the question, who
• 1:44
exactly are the New Avengers? In Avengers Disassembled from
• 1:48
2005, Scarlet Witch, devastated by the loss of her children,
• 1:52
which is fair, caused the team to fall apart.
• 1:56
After the tragic deaths of Ant Man, Hawkeye, and Vision, many
• 2:00
heroes decided it was time to walk away.
• 2:02
With the original team disbanded, someone had to fill
• 2:05
the void. That's where the New Avengers
• 2:08
come in. After a massive prison break at
• 2:11
the Raft left some of Marvel's Universe's most dangerous
• 2:15
villains loose in New York City, which is, of course, it's New
• 2:18
York City, a group of heroes stepped up to take the place of
• 2:22
the missing Avengers. This fresh lineup brought
• 2:24
together veterans like Iron Man and Captain America, along with
• 2:28
the newcomers to the team like Spider Man, Wolverine, Luke
• 2:31
Cage, and Spider Woman. They also brought in the
• 2:34
incredibly powered century, Bob Reynolds we all know and love,
• 2:39
who had actually locked himself up in the Raft as a part of the
• 2:43
team. He tried to keep his darker
• 2:45
side, the Void, in check. During Civil War from 2006, The
• 2:50
Avengers were split down the middle when Captain America and
• 2:53
Iron Man clashed over the Superhuman Registration Act Luke
• 2:56
Cage and Spider Woman sided with Cap, refusing to sign up and
• 3:00
choosing to fight back against Iron Man's Pro Registration
• 3:03
team, much like we all saw in Captain America Civil War in the
• 3:08
the MCU. After the dust settled, Luke
• 3:12
Cage went off the grid and pulled together a new crew of
• 3:15
unregistered heroes operating in secret out of Doctor Strange's
• 3:20
Sanctum Sanctorium. This underground version of the
• 3:23
New Avengers included Iron Fist, Doctor Strange, Echo, Spider
• 3:27
  Man, Wolverine, and Spider Woman.
• 3:30
Clint Barton also jumped in, taking on the identity of Ronan.
• 3:35
Eventually, it was discovered that the Raft breakout was a
• 3:38
part of the scroll invasion of Earth.
• 3:40
This led to a gigantic battle in New York where due to some
• 3:44
behind the scenes manipulation, the villainous Norman Osborne,
• 3:48
the Green Goblin managed to kill the scroll leader, essentially
• 3:52
replacing Nick Fury in the aftermath due to a wave of
• 3:56
popularity and political support, this began the Dark
• 4:00
Rain era of Marvel Comics, in which Norman Osbourne elevated
• 4:03
villains to positions of importance and began persecuting
• 4:07
and attempting to assassinate various heroes.
• 4:10
If you haven't checked out anything from Dark Green, you
• 4:13
have to check out something from Dark Green.
• 4:15
I highly recommend it. It's arguably one of Marvel's
• 4:20
darkest times of Marvel Comics, and I am here for that.
• 4:24
I like it all, so definitely check out dark green.
• 4:28
Some really, really incredible stuff is in it.
• 4:31
Moving on, Captain American Iron Man LED 1 squad out of The
• 4:35
Avengers Tower while Luke Cage took charge of the officially
• 4:38
recognized New Avengers. They set up shop at Avengers
• 4:42
Mansion, bought from Tony Stark for just $1.00, a symbolic move
• 4:46
to show the start of a more united front.
• 4:50
The teams split the lineup at Luke Cage's crew, including
• 4:54
Spider Man, Wolverine, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Miss
• 4:58
Marvel. Who you know at the time is Miss
• 5:00
Marvel. It's Carol Danvers who is now
• 5:03
Captain Marvel, Hawkeye, Mockingbird, and The Thing.
• 5:07
Side note, Bucky Barnes does later join the New Avengers but
• 5:11
not as The Winter Soldier or Bucky Barnes.
• 5:13
Bucky worked with the team when Steve Rogers was believed to be
• 5:17
dead, operating as a gun wielding Captain America who
• 5:22
went by the nickname Bucky Cap given to him by Spider Man,
• 5:26
which I think is adorable. This version of the New Avengers
• 5:31
handled everything from mystical threats like the Eye of
• 5:34
Agamotto, which I actually am wearing today, to clashes with
• 5:39
the New Dark Avengers. But after Avengers versus X-Men
• 5:44
from 2012, Luke stepped away to focus on raising his daughter,
• 5:48
and the team eventually went their separate ways.
• 5:51
And New Avengers #1 from 2013 by Jonathan Hickman and Steve
• 5:56
Epstein. Black Panther witnessed a world
• 5:59
ending event but it wasn't his own.
• 6:02
T'challa saw an incursion a which is a collision between two
• 6:05
universes that ends with one or both being destroyed.
• 6:10
Realizing the multiverse was falling apart, he brought
• 6:13
together the secret Illuminati, Iron Man, Mr. Fantastic Namor,
• 6:18
Doctor Strange, and Black Bolt meeting in Necropolis after
• 6:23
Professor XS Death Beast joined the group to represent mutant
• 6:27
kind. This ultra secret team did
• 6:30
everything they could to prevent total annihilation, even taking
• 6:34
some extreme steps, but in the end, their efforts were not
• 6:38
  enough. The multiverse collapsed and
• 6:40
Doctor Doom ended up piercing together the remains into a new
• 6:44
world called Battle World, which he ruled over in Secret wars #1
• 6:50
from 2015. Before the multiverse collapsed,
• 6:54
Robert Dacosta Sunspot that you most recently seen in X-Men 97,
• 7:00
bought out AIM and started using its resources to figure out
• 7:04
what's causing the incursions. After the multiverse was
• 7:07
restored, he gave the organization a major rebrand,
• 7:11
turning it into Avengers Idea Mechanics and New Avengers #1
• 7:17
from 2015, written by Al Wing and Gerardo Sandoval.
• 7:23
I never get his name right and I'm so happy.
• 7:25
I just did have ruined the moment by celebrating.
• 7:29
Sorry guys. So Sunspot's version of The
• 7:33
Avengers was a unique lineup featuring Wiccan, Hulkling,
• 7:37
Squirrel Girl, White Tiger, Power Man, Songbird, Hawkeye,
• 7:40
and Pod. One of their biggest threats was
• 7:44
The Maker, which is an evil version of Reed Richards who had
• 7:49
made his way to Earth 616 after Secret Wars in 2015.
• 7:54
So the New Avengers weren't around for too long.
• 7:58
The New Avengers ran from like 2003 to 2012 ish in the comics,
• 8:02
officially breaking up not long after Avengers versus X-Men,
• 8:07
which is really really a fun storyline.
• 8:10
You have to check that out. During that event, the New
• 8:13
Avengers joined the fight against Cyclops X-Men, some of
• 8:17
whom had been taken over by the Phoenix Force.
• 8:20
After everything went down, Captain America decided it was
• 8:23
time for a new kind of team, one that would promote unity between
• 8:28
humans and marginalized groups like mutants and humans and even
• 8:33
androids. This new squad, called the
• 8:35
Uncanny Avengers or The Avengers Unity Division, operated out of
• 8:42
the old New Avengers base. A few former New Avengers were a
• 8:46
part of the original lineup, which included Steve Rogers, who
• 8:49
is Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Thor, Wolverine, Rogue
• 8:53
and Havoc. So that's the short version of
• 8:59
who the New Avengers are. I can give you the long version,
• 9:02
but I don't know how long you want to sit there and listen to
• 9:04
me talk, 'cause it is. It's so much to go through, but
• 9:09
if you guys want it I'll do it, but if you don't want it I will
• 9:13
not do it. So choice is yours.
• 9:16
So as far as the comics go, there is so much to cover.
• 9:21
There's so much. A quick tip is anything Brian
• 9:25
Bendis writes, you're on the right track.
• 9:28
Bendis work is so recommended. He is so talented.
• 9:31
I love what he's he has done with the New Avengers.
• 9:34
His era is one of my favorite, at least for as far as writers
• 9:39
go. So the New Avengers run by
• 9:43
Bendis is 1 to check out. Avengers Disassembled, Avengers
• 9:50
versus X-Men House of M which is one of my favourites.
• 9:58
I'll I'm rereading it right now. I just love it.
• 10:01
Next one is Civil War, Mighty Avengers by Bendis, Secret
• 10:09
Invasion, Dark Avengers, Avengers slash, X-Men, Utopia,
• 10:19
Siege. And like I said, you have to
• 10:23
check out Dark Rain. It's so good.
• 10:25
You it's just love it. But also one that like I thought
• 10:29
was kind of cool was New Avengers volume to #16 This is
• 10:33
where you can see Daredevil join the team for once, which I
• 10:39
thought was pretty cool to see him as an Avenger, but that's
• 10:42
just me. So that is the short version of
• 10:45
who the New Avengers are who are there in the comics.
• 10:50
They're not very much like the MCU, but that's OK.
• 10:54
The MCU is just loosely based on the comics.
• 10:58
It would be interesting to see if we got Uncanny Avengers at
• 11:01
some point in the MCU because we given the fact that we are
• 11:04
getting X-Men, we have the New Avengers.
• 11:08
Thunderbolts is apparently a thing of the past.
• 11:10
It was very short lived, probably about two hours to
• 11:14
their lifespan in the MCU, which is a choice, but whatever.
• 11:22
So yeah, the possibilities are pretty, pretty endless,
• 11:25
especially come with Doomsday coming up and Secret Wars and
• 11:29
all of the actors that will be involved in those.
• 11:32
So I'm interested to see where they go with this.
• 11:34
I'm interested to see what they do with the New Avengers if they
• 11:37
end up all just being one Avengers team with Sam's
• 11:40
  Avengers, which feels pretty likely.
• 11:43
So yeah, so let me know in the comments what you guys think of
• 11:47
the change for from Thunderbolts to New Avengers and let me know
• 11:53
what you think of the line up. Also, be sure to check out my
• 11:57
review of Thunderbolts that I've posted Friday, maybe Saturday, I
• 12:04
don't know, it's like 2 in the morning, who knows?
• 12:06
So be sure to like and subscribe and have a marvelous day.
