Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hey, we've got Angels bench coach and former Big League
- 0:05Speaker 1: of Ryan goinges with us. Go go with the elite
- 0:08Speaker 1: background too, how's life man.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Skills?
- 0:12Speaker 3: Just stealing some Starbucks, life file, joining the palm trees,
- 0:14Speaker 3: It's all good. Nice.
- 0:17Speaker 4: They must pay, They must pay infield coaches so much money.
- 0:21Speaker 5: Look at that background. I thought infield coaches didn't get nothing.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Hey, l A got beautiful Starbucks out there.
- 0:28Speaker 5: Is that what it is?
- 0:30Speaker 2: That's what it is.
- 0:32Speaker 4: When you used to play in the field, you weren't buying.
- 0:35Speaker 4: You weren't buying those Starbucks on the way, and you
- 0:37Speaker 4: made way more money. Now look at you. You you
- 0:39Speaker 4: buy your own food and everything.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Yes, you know, uh don't like to go to the
- 0:44Speaker 3: field at ten, o't off anymore and just steal all
- 0:46Speaker 3: the food and the drink similar sor right, let me
- 0:48Speaker 3: stay away for a little bit.
- 0:50Speaker 2: That was back in the day. I was broke, you know,
- 0:52Speaker 2: trying to make a living.
- 0:55Speaker 5: Trying to trying to grind. Yeah, no, I get it.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Hey appreciate you coming on here, go go, But look
- 1:02Speaker 4: like to say, Ryan Goins has managed two Big League
- 1:06Speaker 4: games officially. I know there's been ones where you were
- 1:09Speaker 4: you stepped in when then there's ejections, I just got
- 1:12Speaker 4: I gotta say publicly, congratulations like that to me, that's awesome.
- 1:16Speaker 4: I don't care how you got there. You managed two
- 1:19Speaker 4: big league games, but no way you thought that was
- 1:21Speaker 4: gonna be what you were doing when you signed on
- 1:24Speaker 4: this year to be the infield coach.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Yeah, not a not a chance. Yeah, it's like, you know,
- 1:31Speaker 3: things happen this year. Obviously was watched going down and
- 1:35Speaker 3: appreciative of the opportunity that I got, you know, and
- 1:39Speaker 3: I stopped playing that to twenty two. I would have
- 1:41Speaker 3: never said I made it was big league games three
- 1:44Speaker 3: years later, but it was an awesome opportunity, so fun,
- 1:49Speaker 3: you know, something that I've wanted to do for a
- 1:51Speaker 3: long time when I haven't been do going forward.
- 1:53Speaker 2: So that's.
- 1:56Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:56Speaker 4: So what is what is that like when you're when
- 2:00Speaker 4: you're getting hired to be the infield coach on Ron
- 2:04Speaker 4: Washington's team. I get it Ron Washington. You know you
- 2:08Speaker 4: you worked under him with the Brave right like you.
- 2:12Speaker 5: Were one of those infielders. Isn't that kind of intimidating?
- 2:16Speaker 5: Isn't that kind of like dang? I better? You know
- 2:18Speaker 5: Wash is always out here with these dudes.
- 2:20Speaker 4: He's always got all these videos and working with these guys,
- 2:23Speaker 4: and everybody talks to them, even the other team. Are
- 2:26Speaker 4: you kind of like looking over your back or was
- 2:29Speaker 4: washed like you got.
- 2:31Speaker 5: This go go?
- 2:33Speaker 2: Uh not looking over my bat? Obviously, he trusted me
- 2:36Speaker 2: to come in and be the infield coach.
- 2:38Speaker 5: I believe.
- 2:40Speaker 3: I was always really good at defense, and when I
- 2:41Speaker 3: got with him, I became better, right. And I was like,
- 2:44Speaker 3: I didn't think there was anybody like him doing anything
- 2:47Speaker 3: to get me better on the defensive side, and he
- 2:49Speaker 3: was one person and made me better. So a lot
- 2:52Speaker 3: of our routine is exactly the same as is. You know,
- 2:54Speaker 3: we do all the drills on the knees and I
- 2:57Speaker 3: love angele stuff. You know, we switched a couple of
- 2:59Speaker 3: things in start round ball team, but other than that,
- 3:01Speaker 3: it's pretty much the same thing that he's done forever.
- 3:03Speaker 3: And then, you know, when I'm going over stuff and
- 3:05Speaker 3: he starts talking, it's kind of like, all right, you're
- 3:07Speaker 3: gonna listen to him obviously, you know, because he.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Is who he is, So I just kind of take
- 3:12Speaker 2: the step back and let him go.
- 3:15Speaker 6: I want to ask you a question about coaching. Did
- 3:17Speaker 6: you find it hard transitioning from being a ballplayer to
- 3:21Speaker 6: now a coach, especially being a young guy too as well,
- 3:25Speaker 6: just coming out and all of a sudden boom, I'm
- 3:28Speaker 6: heading up to here to be, you know, an infield coach,
- 3:31Speaker 6: a bench coach, and now you know, have you and
- 3:33Speaker 6: have you thought about maybe managing too one day? Is
- 3:35Speaker 6: that a possibility?
- 3:38Speaker 3: I mean, that'll be for other people to decide if
- 3:41Speaker 3: the managing of the possibility.
- 3:43Speaker 2: It's what I want to do. It's like my ultimate
- 3:44Speaker 2: goals to manage.
- 3:45Speaker 6: You know.
- 3:45Speaker 3: We'll see where infield coaching, where the bench Sultz thing
- 3:48Speaker 3: takes me in the future. But you know, the transition
- 3:51Speaker 3: to coaching wasn't tough. I knew when I was doing.
- 3:53Speaker 3: It's all I've done my whole life. It's like the
- 3:56Speaker 3: one thing that I really love to do. I knew
- 3:58Speaker 3: I wanted to coach. So after twenty two I got back.
- 4:01Speaker 3: I called that back up to the big leagues. I
- 4:04Speaker 3: was there for seven games and like, I didn't play,
- 4:07Speaker 3: didn't even like get my hamstrings loose, you know, So
- 4:09Speaker 3: it was kind of like, all.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Right, I got back here.
- 4:13Speaker 3: I did what I wanted to do, but I just
- 4:15Speaker 3: don't feel like I'm a big league option anymore. And
- 4:16Speaker 3: then just knowing that, I went to the coaches, like,
- 4:18Speaker 3: all right, let's just start the journey in a new way.
- 4:21Speaker 3: And then I got really lucky, you know, went to
- 4:23Speaker 3: Kansas City coach in Triple A. I signed a player contract, you know,
- 4:26Speaker 3: and I was going to get to coach so coach
- 4:30Speaker 3: there for a year and then you're talking to watch
- 4:32Speaker 3: that off season and got this opportunity which I didn't
- 4:35Speaker 3: think would come that fast. You know, you kind of
- 4:37Speaker 3: prepare to grind it out in.
- 4:39Speaker 2: The minor leagues.
- 4:40Speaker 3: But I've been lucky, you know, I've been on some
- 4:42Speaker 3: good people. I've been lucky, and to get this opportunity
- 4:45Speaker 3: to be great, So it wasn't tough to just transition.
- 4:48Speaker 3: I knew I was done, you know, I just wasn't
- 4:51Speaker 3: a big league player anymore.
- 4:52Speaker 2: And Nick wasn't right for two.
- 4:58Speaker 4: All right, two things right before he came. I'm not
- 5:00Speaker 4: sure if you heard her or now we're talking about
- 5:01Speaker 4: rookie dress up. One what did you dress up as
- 5:05Speaker 4: when you were a rookie? And two technically you're a
- 5:08Speaker 4: rookie coach? Did they make you dress up? Because I
- 5:11Speaker 4: know sometimes coaches do that.
- 5:14Speaker 3: As a player, I dressed up like four timeels so
- 5:18Speaker 3: I was a rookie like every year to everybody. I
- 5:21Speaker 3: guess when you're the guy that talks the most trash
- 5:23Speaker 3: to the older guys, they just say, all right, you're
- 5:26Speaker 3: gonna dress up every time. I was a monkey, I
- 5:29Speaker 3: was a sailor. I was like a bumblebee with like
- 5:32Speaker 3: the tightest clothing ever. I sung on the bus about
- 5:35Speaker 3: thirteen times, so I got like the rookie times. So
- 5:41Speaker 3: and then as a coach thought nothing. As a coach,
- 5:44Speaker 3: I think we're past that.
- 5:47Speaker 2: But it's been good. Man. We have a lot of experience.
- 5:49Speaker 2: I think a lot from the guy.
- 5:52Speaker 5: We're not past it.
- 5:54Speaker 4: Look, go go if you were on my staff, you
- 5:57Speaker 4: were my staff, I would make you dress up because.
- 5:59Speaker 5: You were that guy. You talk.
- 6:02Speaker 4: You you would talk some absolute smack and so you
- 6:05Speaker 4: deserved all those dress ups. And I appreciate that how
- 6:09Speaker 4: you handled it because you were pro about it.
- 6:12Speaker 3: I just say, you know, I got a mouth made
- 6:15Speaker 3: for football, but I didn't get the bought.
- 6:18Speaker 5: You got a body made.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Mouth made for football, yeah, perfect, and.
- 6:26Speaker 5: Hands made for shortstop. That's all.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I got one good tool. That's it.
- 6:31Speaker 4: Hey, that go good tool got you a lot of time.
- 6:34Speaker 4: I want to talk about your big league shortstop though
- 6:37Speaker 4: you work with Netto. Obviously we can look at all
- 6:40Speaker 4: his numbers, we can look at what he's done. But
- 6:42Speaker 4: talking to one of his other hitting coaches from another year,
- 6:47Speaker 4: talking to his ex manager, they talked about, like I
- 6:51Speaker 4: guess the kids would say, Aura. They talked about how
- 6:54Speaker 4: he kind of like he just got something different. Can
- 6:57Speaker 4: you explain that and also explain how good Zach Netto is?
- 7:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I get what you're saying with with the aora.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Just the way he carries himself, you know, for being
- 7:08Speaker 3: what twenty three, twenty four years old, he knows he's good, right,
- 7:14Speaker 3: I mean, the way he goes about his business.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Like Miami guy. You know all these that Miami guys are.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Always pretty swaggy, have some confidence to him, can throw
- 7:25Speaker 3: some jabs here and there.
- 7:26Speaker 2: He's great. He's great to be around like. But it's
- 7:29Speaker 2: no mystery why he's good.
- 7:30Speaker 3: The kid loves to work right, Like, he comes in,
- 7:33Speaker 3: he works, he does everything he needs to do. He listens,
- 7:36Speaker 3: he applies what we're working on, and like it's been
- 7:39Speaker 3: easy to coach him.
- 7:39Speaker 5: Right.
- 7:40Speaker 3: You look forward to going to the field and coaching
- 7:43Speaker 3: this guy. Uh, I'm excited to see what he does.
- 7:46Speaker 3: You know going forward, that's going to be something special. Obviously,
- 7:49Speaker 3: last year getting cut short and then coming back from
- 7:51Speaker 3: the surgery, and then this year getting back. Obviously, the
- 7:55Speaker 3: injury this year is out of his console was getting.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Kicked by a pitch. But this dude is uh, he's
- 8:00Speaker 2: special night for Sere tod Father.
- 8:03Speaker 7: You and me grew up in Jersey. We liked to
- 8:05Speaker 7: collect cards, but the way the process got was ridiculous.
- 8:10Speaker 7: You open up a pack, there's a bunch of cards
- 8:14Speaker 7: you don't care about. Then you want to get certain
- 8:15Speaker 7: ones graded takes forever right, then you want to maybe
- 8:19Speaker 7: sell one. It's such a to do. Arena club has
- 8:22Speaker 7: been the solution for us.
- 8:23Speaker 6: Arena club has been a solution for everybody. You go online,
- 8:26Speaker 6: go to Arena Club and you check out what they have.
- 8:29Speaker 6: Put a little cash down. You might get one of
- 8:31Speaker 6: the best cards that you've ever seen in your life
- 8:34Speaker 6: and autograph cards and guess what, if you don't like
- 8:36Speaker 6: the card, easily you could sell it back and make
- 8:39Speaker 6: a little cash. You never know what to expect. It's
- 8:41Speaker 6: a cool way of doing it. You're gonna get a
- 8:43Speaker 6: surprise every time. And if you're in the cards, this
- 8:45Speaker 6: is something you really need to get into.
- 8:47Speaker 7: Right now. You can get twenty percent off your first
- 8:49Speaker 7: slap pack or card purchase by going to arenaclub dot com,
- 8:52Speaker 7: slash foul and use code foul like Todd Father is
- 8:55Speaker 7: talking about with those slap packs. Every pack is a
- 8:58Speaker 7: grail that's at least twenty x the price of the pack.
- 9:01Speaker 7: Check it out.
- 9:02Speaker 6: I want to talk a little bit about another team
- 9:04Speaker 6: who you played a bunch of times, the Mariners Seattle.
- 9:09Speaker 6: You know you're a coach. Now you got to understand
- 9:11Speaker 6: the ins and outs of other teams. Tell me how
- 9:13Speaker 6: you how you would pitch the cal Rawley, Like, what's
- 9:16Speaker 6: the scout and report on this team that's got a
- 9:18Speaker 6: really good chance of making a big run here in
- 9:20Speaker 6: the playoffs.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Uh, Washington this year is amazing. Right, I'm just gonna
- 9:26Speaker 3: pray for a base opening two outs. I could intentionally
- 9:29Speaker 3: walk him to first right, like every time he goes
- 9:32Speaker 3: up there, you feel like he's gonna do damage. Limits
- 9:34Speaker 3: the chase. He hits the ball in the air to
- 9:37Speaker 3: the pool side, like from both sides to play similar
- 9:40Speaker 3: to the hose Air Mirles does in the Cleveland Uh,
- 9:44Speaker 3: we were actually talking him in thuthout and I was,
- 9:46Speaker 3: you know, talking about MDP and I was ttarying to
- 9:48Speaker 3: give somebody other coaches a hard time to say, oh,
- 9:50Speaker 3: that's just.
- 9:50Speaker 2: When they win it. But I'm like, man, this guy's
- 9:52Speaker 2: year has been unbelievable.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Catches, you know, a ton of games, hits like that,
- 9:57Speaker 3: controls the pitching staff, which that pitching staf that was incredible. Uh,
- 10:02Speaker 3: it's been a pretty impressive and special year for him.
- 10:06Speaker 5: So you've seen it. Is he the MVP? Is cal
- 10:08Speaker 5: the MVP? Or one? Did the coaches say?
- 10:10Speaker 3: What have you heard it on your Yeah, everybody's got
- 10:13Speaker 3: cal Raley. I want him to win it his why,
- 10:16Speaker 3: I mean, he deserves it for what he's done, right,
- 10:18Speaker 3: probably what special year the catcher's ever had in this.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Game and game time. Uh, the man twenty five and
- 10:27Speaker 2: fifties pretty good year. That's how did you get.
- 10:29Speaker 5: Around squad for sure.
- 10:32Speaker 4: But let's go back to earlier in the year. I
- 10:34Speaker 4: was watching Angels game. The Yankees came in, and Ron
- 10:39Speaker 4: and Wash was still on the he was still on
- 10:40Speaker 4: the bench and he was like.
- 10:43Speaker 5: Four four.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Now he's got I think he broke the record for
- 10:47Speaker 4: a season of intentional walks by a Yankee judge did
- 10:50Speaker 4: just last night or maybe it was the night before.
- 10:53Speaker 5: I haven't seen that from cal Raley.
- 10:55Speaker 4: So is there really that same fear of cal Rawley
- 11:00Speaker 4: that there is a Aaron Judge And doesn't that go
- 11:02Speaker 4: into the MVP vote?
- 11:06Speaker 5: Hey, I don't know.
- 11:07Speaker 3: I don't know how the voting goes, but I know
- 11:09Speaker 3: when they both step up there, they have a chance
- 11:11Speaker 3: to go deep.
- 11:11Speaker 2: And I don't really want to throw strikes to either
- 11:13Speaker 2: of them.
- 11:14Speaker 3: So, uh, you know you're not gonna pick one wrong, right,
- 11:18Speaker 3: You're never gonna have one wrong either way.
- 11:21Speaker 2: I know Ey was talking about co MVPs. I don't
- 11:24Speaker 2: think that'd be terribley.
- 11:24Speaker 5: There.
- 11:25Speaker 2: You both have incredible use.
- 11:27Speaker 6: Mmm. I like that too. I think that I don't
- 11:32Speaker 6: see that as a bad I mean, the way things
- 11:35Speaker 6: are going now, I know, so I.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Know one guy, let's not get participation trophies.
- 11:41Speaker 5: But yeah, there let go, thank you, bro.
- 11:43Speaker 2: You know that somebody just got to finish.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Second, they don't give the World Series trophy to both teams?
- 11:48Speaker 5: There you go.
- 11:50Speaker 6: I like what he why said? I like what he said?
- 11:54Speaker 5: Hey, go go. I'm going to jump in here a
- 11:56Speaker 5: question for you.
- 11:58Speaker 1: I mean, the Angels obviously are postseason bound this year.
- 12:01Speaker 1: I know the team's got a nice little young core
- 12:03Speaker 1: going here. How do you cut down the strikeouts? I
- 12:06Speaker 1: know that's been the big talk the last couple of months.
- 12:08Speaker 1: What are you seeing there and what can you advise,
- 12:11Speaker 1: you know, take away the mechanical portions of things. What
- 12:14Speaker 1: is going on?
- 12:17Speaker 3: Well, I don't know if you've pulled up my baseball
- 12:19Speaker 3: reference page, but I'm probably not the poster boy for
- 12:21Speaker 3: talking about people striking out.
- 12:23Speaker 2: But then I will say that I don't want to.
- 12:26Speaker 3: I don't want to make it sound like oh news
- 12:28Speaker 3: school disc Like I watched these pictures go out there
- 12:30Speaker 3: and pitch, and I'm like, thank god, I don't have
- 12:33Speaker 3: to grab a bat. You know, it's like top top
- 12:36Speaker 3: of the zone, ninety eight, ninety nine slider down.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Like you go, face Seattle. It's like top of his
- 12:42Speaker 2: own slider, top of his own slide.
- 12:43Speaker 3: It's like I was talking the other day, like these
- 12:47Speaker 3: pitching labs, right, the guys go to they're creating pitches
- 12:51Speaker 3: they know you can't hit, right, Like they're doing things
- 12:54Speaker 3: you know you can't get to and we have all
- 12:57Speaker 3: the information. So like as hard as it is to
- 13:00Speaker 3: already get a hit, they just hit the ball forward
- 13:03Speaker 3: like they know what you can't do, you know, and
- 13:06Speaker 3: they're just trying to expose that over and over and over.
- 13:10Speaker 6: You know.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Like as much as you want to say, choke and
- 13:12Speaker 3: poke it, I get it, Like choke and poke it.
- 13:14Speaker 3: But if you hit a ground ball to a guy
- 13:15Speaker 3: like me or you guy like exactly, you're out.
- 13:20Speaker 5: Yeah, we don't. We don't play.
- 13:21Speaker 4: We don't play high school where it's like, hey, put
- 13:23Speaker 4: the ball in play, like something's gonna happen. Normally it
- 13:27Speaker 4: doesn't happen, even even on the worst fielding teams. Normally,
- 13:31Speaker 4: something doesn't happen.
- 13:32Speaker 3: Yeah, And I mean you can say I'll go like
- 13:35Speaker 3: you'll back the ball up, it'll push you on time
- 13:37Speaker 3: for a breaking ball, this and that. But like and
- 13:40Speaker 3: then hitting is getting so wid I watch it, not
- 13:43Speaker 3: even us other team for hitting. How these guys just
- 13:48Speaker 3: like get better, like the pitching, the pitching side of it,
- 13:51Speaker 3: how they just keep getting better or like the stuff
- 13:52Speaker 3: becomes different, you know, like now the sweeper right, like
- 13:57Speaker 3: you know, you could throw a ball one movie this
- 14:00Speaker 3: follow that way, I mean one moving the same the
- 14:02Speaker 3: other way, like good luck.
- 14:06Speaker 5: That is that is good for you.
- 14:08Speaker 4: You are you are because you've been out of the
- 14:11Speaker 4: game the perfect amount of time. You've been out of
- 14:13Speaker 4: hitting the perfect amount of time where you're like, I
- 14:16Speaker 4: figured it out. But you're so honest and real you
- 14:20Speaker 4: realized this John was super tough.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Now it's crazy. So yeah, I mean I don't I'm
- 14:29Speaker 3: not going to bad and he looks all right. Stuff
- 14:33Speaker 3: not going in the right direction. I can still seal
- 14:36Speaker 3: the ground ball with the best of them, but hitting
- 14:38Speaker 3: it forward started to be a problem.
- 14:40Speaker 5: All right.
- 14:41Speaker 4: We we love, we love getting into like, you know,
- 14:44Speaker 4: how's the background of this stuff going? You texted me
- 14:46Speaker 4: this morning when I texted, hey, looking forward to seeing
- 14:49Speaker 4: you on the show, you were like, shipp in my truck?
- 14:53Speaker 4: What's that process like? Because people don't like people come
- 14:57Speaker 4: to watch our show because they're like, I kind of
- 14:59Speaker 4: want to see more than just like the Bobo answers.
- 15:03Speaker 4: You got to ship your truck home. This is something
- 15:05Speaker 4: that people don't understand. The season's almost over, so you're
- 15:08Speaker 4: doing some other planning stuff. What's that look like? And
- 15:11Speaker 4: what else are you doing?
- 15:13Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, you got to pack up all the clothes,
- 15:15Speaker 3: get it in boxes, pack it up, find car shipping.
- 15:21Speaker 2: We have it nice though. The person that we've always
- 15:23Speaker 2: used here with Anaheim and our.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Our travel guy, Tom Taylor, kind of put me in
