- 0:00Happy Tuesday morning, everybody.
- 0:04I thought I'd come out here to the back of the house.
- 0:08The back of the house is becoming my favorite part.
- 0:14Yes, it is. Nothing really to show.
- 0:16Just giving you a nice little 360.
- 0:20We're going to talk about that today.
- 0:23We're going to talk about children accepting their father
- 0:27being addicted to racing. That's what we're going to talk
- 0:31about. So I woke up this morning.
- 0:35There's that ADHD right away, I said.
- 0:38We woke up this morning. And right away my my brain went.
- 0:41I woke up in New York City in a funky, cheap hotel.
- 0:47She stole my heart. She took my money.
- 0:50She must have slipped me a sleeping pill.
- 0:54I can't help it, man. I can't help it.
- 0:58All right, So really didn't know what I was going to talk about
- 1:03today. By the way, I want to thank my
- 1:05Mama, Judy Wallace. I love you, Mom.
- 1:08My mother bought us that table and that table, and it wasn't
- 1:18cheap because it's really good outdoor furniture.
- 1:21It's got stainless steel screws and really nice.
- 1:25So thank you, Mama. Judy.
- 1:27I love you, Mama. You know I'm your baby and I
- 1:33look just like her. OK, so Brandy.
- 1:38Brandy, my middle 1. Brandy louder.
- 1:42She used to be Brandy Wallace. Brandy sent me a note last
- 1:46night. My middle daughter, she sent me
- 1:49a note last night at 11:51 at night and I was sleeping.
- 1:54So this morning I read it. Brandy got addicted to the, the,
- 2:03the NASCAR on prime, the, you know, the NASCAR special with
- 2:08Earnhardt, Earnhardt, the documentary, Brandy got addicted
- 2:13to it. Let me take a it's going to be a
- 2:16tough one, everybody, so hang in there.
- 2:18I got to make sure I weave this story right so nobody gets mad
- 2:22at me and you all understand it. My daughter Brandy said, oh, my
- 2:27dad. The kids on the Earnhardt
- 2:30special seem to accept that they were neglected because their
- 2:35father was busy racing. I responded to Brandy.
- 2:41I said, oh, yeah. I said Kelly Earnhardt has
- 2:43talked about that a lot. Dale Earnhardt senior really
- 2:52wanted to race so bad. He wanted to make it work, you
- 2:56know, Earnhardt senior, he was poor and you know, I lived down
- 3:01there for 27 years. Now think about it this way,
- 3:05Dale Earnhardt junior and Kelly. I've had them on Kenny
- 3:08conversation and I love them dearly and we're good friends.
- 3:12Actually, just to put a disclaimer out here to
- 3:15everybody, Dale junior and myself, we texted last night.
- 3:19Now, I'm not name dropping, I'm just letting you know I'm
- 3:23bopping and weaving on this to let you know that it's OK
- 3:26because I'm reminding you that Kelly has talked about this a
- 3:30lot. Kelly Earnhardt has talked about
- 3:32this a lot. And the documentary Earnhardt on
- 3:35Prime talks about Big E Dale senior #3 the man in Black.
- 3:43You know, really not giving the kids the love that they need
- 3:46growing up and that, you know, the kids accepted it and just,
- 3:50it was just matter of fact, it was part of it.
- 3:53So now I want to talk about this in racing and in general in
- 3:58life, in sports. I want to tell you my story.
- 4:02OK, Years ago, I can tell you that all I wanted was to be a
- 4:07race car driver and I was obsessed with it.
- 4:12And I still am obsessed with it. And I'm trying to wean myself
- 4:16off of racing. My wife Kim was my biggest
- 4:21educator. Kim is smart and she loves me
- 4:26and I love her with everything I got as I was obsessed with
- 4:31racing to the maximum peak. My wife said to me one day she
- 4:38says, Kenny, you better pay attention to these kids.
- 4:42They're going to be grown up and gone before you know it.
- 4:46I heard her. I heard her really loud, but I
- 4:50didn't tell her that I heard her really loud.
- 4:52I said something like, OK, but I heard her.
- 4:59She said to me, honey, you better pay attention.
- 5:03These kids, they're going to grow up and be gone.
- 5:10And it hurt my heart a little bit, 'cause it, you know,
- 5:12there's some things that people can say that really stick in
- 5:16your crawl. Like, I come to find out there's
- 5:19some things I tell my wife and I don't think she hears me.
- 5:23And months later she'll say something to somebody that Kenny
- 5:28said this and like, oh, you did hear me.
- 5:31That was the biggest thing that changed my life as far as making
- 5:34sure I do a good job with my children.
- 5:38See, when you're obsessed with something, you'll do anything to
- 5:44make sure that you're successful.
- 5:46And when you, when I was poor, when I didn't have any money and
- 5:49you can ask anybody, you can. I always say if you want to go
- 5:53to anybody and ask him how poor I was, go to my friend here,
- 5:56Donnie Jumper, who owns impressive race cars.
- 5:59You know that when I give speeches, I start out, I was so
- 6:03poor and people will go, how poor were you, Kenny?
- 6:07And I say, I was so poor. I used to take my 1976 GMC
- 6:13pickup truck and I'd pull up to the gas station and I'd say
- 6:17check the gas and fill it up with oil.
- 6:22My motor was so bad I didn't have anything.
- 6:25I even sacrificed myself to become a race car driver.
- 6:31I, I, I roughed myself up because I was doing things to
- 6:38put everything in the race car and I had no money.
- 6:41I mean, I remember one time pulling up to a 711 and I all I
- 6:46wanted was a bag of ice. Now Tony Frazee from Montrose,
- 6:50IA is where he's from. Tony, this we'll get back to
- 6:53you. This is when I was paying Tony
- 6:56200 a week and I didn't have 200 a week and I was racing in ASA.
- 7:02Now, we're not going to go into the story.
- 7:04Well, Herman, if you were running ASA, where did you get
- 7:07the money to rate run ASA? We're not going to get into that
- 7:10because that's mopping and weaving.
- 7:13Don Kern gave me the motor. John Childs, you know, bought
- 7:18the frame and K on and on and and Kim bought the trailer from
- 7:23Dylan. We was robbing Peter to pay
- 7:25Paul. But I drove up to that 711 and
- 7:29this was a turning point in my life.
- 7:31I drove up that 711 just to get a bag.
- 7:33Ice, it's 110° outside. We're trying to go to Anderson
- 7:37IN to race or something like that, 1986 ASA, American Speed
- 7:42Association. I reached in my wallet.
- 7:45I had no money and definitely there's going to be some change
- 7:49in my little side pocket here in my truck.
- 7:52There was no money at that time. That was another highlight in my
- 7:56life. When I look back, I realized at
- 7:59that moment I was broke. Like in real.
- 8:03Like I don't even know if I had a checking account.
- 8:06I don't know if I did back then. That's when Kim took care of
- 8:09whatever money we had. There was no money.
- 8:14There was no money in my checking account.
- 8:16There was no money in my wallet and there was no money.
- 8:20I think we called Kim's grandma and borrowed some money.
- 8:26Pretty good amount of money too. And years ago when I made it,
- 8:30years later when I made it, we went to give her the money back
- 8:35and she wouldn't accept it. And I said, why will you not
- 8:40accept us paying you back? She goes because you offered to
- 8:43pay back. She goes, most people I give
- 8:46money to, they won't pay it back so I'll never help them again.
- 8:50She goes, I'm very proud of you. You offered to pay this back.
- 8:53So what I did is I just gave you a peek inside a racist world.
- 8:59We grew up broke as a joke because all the money, if you
- 9:02made any money, it all went into the race car.
- 9:05I did neglect my children a little bit.
- 9:09To this day, my heart has been broke by my children.
- 9:13But now we're good. When my daughter Brooke, my
- 9:18oldest 1, Brooke Randolph Brooke was married to Jacob years ago,
- 9:25we were living on Harris Rd. in Concord, NC and Brooke was with
- 9:29me that day. For some reason Brooke went with
- 9:33me and we pulled out of the driveway and I think I was
- 9:39taking her to the race shop. I think it was maybe Philmar
- 9:42Racing at that time and we were going across town to the race
- 9:45shop and you know, I knew I had to do a good job with my kids or
- 9:50try better. I I wasn't that great, but
- 9:54Brookie said to me, Daddy, where you going?
- 9:56I said, well, Daddy's got to go to work because I got to make
- 10:00money to buy you toys. The next thing my daughter
- 10:06Brooke said broke my heart. She said, Daddy, I don't want no
- 10:11more toys. All I want is you.
- 10:16Oh, God. Oh, Brooke said daddy, where are
- 10:25you going now? I said daddy's going to go race
- 10:28to make money to buy you toys and Brooke said Daddy I don't
- 10:31want no more toys. I want you.
- 10:36Talk about a slap in the face. Talk about straightening your up
- 10:40right now. So between Kim saying Kenny, you
- 10:47better pay attention to these kids.
- 10:49They're going to be married, grown up and gone before you
- 10:51know it. And I think Brooke was 8 years
- 10:54old maybe. I've got friends.
- 11:00I got a good dirt racing friend that's obsessed with racing to
- 11:04the maximum peak. He missed his kids graduation on
- 11:08purpose because he had to run farm or City or Fairburn or some
- 11:12stupid. And when he did it, I went.
- 11:16I get it, but it might haunt you later on.
- 11:20My advice to all of you dirt racers that are obsessed over
- 11:26winning $700.00 and going to the dirt car UMP banquet at the end
- 11:31of the year to pick up your 7th place points money.
- 11:35That's stupid. Don't do that no more.
- 11:38Because of this, because of what I'm telling you.
- 11:41And I want to thank my daughter Brandy for bringing the
- 11:45Earnhardt documentary to to light and telling me about it so
- 11:49I can share my story with you all.
- 11:52I get it, I get it. I worked 24 hours to make my
- 11:59business go. I sacrificed my family.
- 12:03Oh believe me, I get it. I did it.
- 12:08I was lucky because I had a great wife that tutored me along
- 12:13the way. You know you, I didn't get a
- 12:16second chance. I mean, some people get divorced
- 12:19and and go, well, I'm gonna do better this time.
- 12:21I didn't do that. I had one shot at it.
- 12:25That's my excuse, my excuses. You're only a dad one time.
- 12:31Now they're like I said, I get it.
- 12:32There's other people that get divorces and they go, I'm gonna
- 12:34do better this time. Well, I didn't have no second
- 12:37chance. I was getting married one damn
- 12:40time and that was it. And boy, did I get lucky.
- 12:43Kim Wallace is the love of my life.
- 12:46She's a badass. And without her, I tell people I
- 12:50say, listen, there's a lot of jokes going around.
- 12:53But good thing I'm married to Kim, else I'd probably be dead
- 12:56by now doing some stupid. So for everybody that's watching
- 13:02the Earnhardt documentary, that happens a lot in anything.
- 13:07It could be business. Men get crazy, men get crazy and
- 13:13they take their eye off the ball.
- 13:14And I can tell you this for sure.
- 13:18You can do it both. You can do it.
- 13:20You do not have to sacrifice your family.
- 13:23You can here would be my thought.
- 13:26And this is what I do now and my my kids will respond.
- 13:30I yell out family meeting. That was my new one.
- 13:33And that's the way there's gnats out here.
- 13:36There's there's gnats out here flying around.
- 13:38That's. And there's no food or nothing
- 13:40around here. Out of fruit flies where?
- 13:41I don't know what the hell it is.
- 13:43That's why I'm bopping all around here.
- 13:46I would yell out family meeting and it was always Brandy, the
- 13:50middle one. What do we do wrong, Dad?
- 13:52I said nothing. Sit down and I'd look them all
- 13:57in the face. Daddy loves you so much.
- 14:00Do you all understand? Yeah.
- 14:02Dad. You love us, I said.
- 14:04Now Daddy's got to leave seven days.
- 14:06I'm going to Florida for the Daytona 500.
- 14:09OK, Dad, are you going to watch me on TV?
- 14:12Yeah, Dad, we're going to watch. I'm.
- 14:14I'm running the Bush race. It's 300 mile.
- 14:17And I I started getting involved and tell him I love you.
- 14:21Mom's going to take you to the mall.
- 14:25But boy, it was a close call with me.
- 14:27I almost messed up and about messed up when I came back here.
- 14:37I wanted to really run that dirt car about five years ago and it
- 14:43was my daughter Brooke. Brooke straightened me out
- 14:46again. Now I want to say this, I got
- 14:48Brooke, Brandy and Brittany. Brittany was always quiet.
- 14:52Brittany always observed everything.
- 14:54She really didn't never chew my ass out.
- 14:56If I was going to ever take an ass chewing for many of my kids,
- 14:59it was going to be Brooke, the oldest one, the alpha, the alpha
- 15:02female. I love all three of my kids
- 15:06equally. They're awesome.
- 15:07But but Brookey is rusty. So I said, well, I think Dad's
- 15:15going to quit. And Brooke goes, Dad, Dad, we
- 15:18don't want you to quit. I saw Brooke.
- 15:21I thought you guys are tired of me running that dirt car, going
- 15:24up to Fairbury and Farmer sitting running around like a
- 15:28fool at 60 years old. You know what my daughter Brooke
- 15:32not. This is a couple years ago.
- 15:34Brooke had to straighten me out. You know what she said to me?
- 15:37Dad, we don't want you to ever quit racing.
- 15:40We love you racing. We just want you to come to our
- 15:45your grandbaby's birthday parties.
- 15:48Oh, talk about a dumb ass I'd rolled.
- 15:54I'd roll down that hill right down there for 700 to win at at
- 15:58some stupid dirt race. Spoon River in the middle of
- 16:01nowhere. Don't even know how to get
- 16:03there, Dan and got signs you could win the damn race and they
- 16:06don't even know you want it. That's how stupid some of us
- 16:09dirt racers are. It's like a little cult deal.
- 16:13But I was, I was addicted to it. Thought if I won, I could solve
- 16:18World Peace. Oh, he won the feature at
- 16:20Tri-City. He's world famous now.
- 16:23The people that have the gas station at the corner don't even
- 16:25know the race tracks there. But I was addicted to it.
- 16:29So you know what I did? I quit doing that.
- 16:35But I asked Brooke for a little help.
- 16:39I said, Brooke, Dad's gonna be at every grandbabies birthday
- 16:43party from now on. Could you have their birthday
- 16:45parties at noon, noon to 2 so I could go race?
- 16:50And she goes, yes. And by the way, when you leave,
- 16:53don't honk the horn like you do because then that draws the kids
- 16:56attention to you leaving. Alright everybody, I want to
- 17:03thank my daughter Brandy Lee. She's an incredible stylist and
- 17:08makeup. Check out Brandy.
- 17:10She works at the Tribe Hair Salon here in Imperial, MO
- 17:14Brandy Wallace Brandy. Brandy Louder is her name now.
- 17:20Brandy Louder Brandy is the best, by the way, Brooke's the
- 17:24best. She's a dental hygienist up in
- 17:26Kirkwood, MO. Brandy's the best hair and
- 17:30makeup. She's the best in the world.
- 17:32She did all the all the NASCAR people stuff in Birkdale back
- 17:36there in North Carolina. And my daughter Brittany, she's
- 17:40a bad ass too. She works for Lowe's corporate.
- 17:42She works on the search engine team.
- 17:45I'm proud of all of my girls. But it was a close call with me.
- 17:48And I want to thank my wife, Kim, for put, you know, for
- 17:54putting me in my place and making me realize how up I was.
- 18:00So I hope that helps you understand the Earnhardt side.
- 18:03Dale Earnhardt senior wanted to be a great racer so bad that he
- 18:07almost forgot he had kids. It's a cautionary tale.
- 18:17Let me remind you what the word cautionary tale is.
- 18:20It means this is a story that's not too good, but it turns out
- 18:24OK. Have a great Tuesday, everybody.
