- 0:00Speaker 1: Tell you what I think that a lot of people
- 0:01Speaker 1: love walking around the CBD and also the suburbs and
- 0:05Speaker 1: seeing the Darwin Street Art Festival. Now it is launching
- 0:08Speaker 1: again this August, and joining me in the studio to
- 0:11Speaker 1: tell us a little bit more about it is the
- 0:14Speaker 1: director of the Street Art Festival, David Collins. Good morning
- 0:18Speaker 1: to you, good morning, thanks so much for joining us
- 0:20Speaker 1: in the studio.
- 0:22Speaker 2: David. The Street Art Festival.
- 0:23Speaker 1: It's been a real hat, hasn't it since it first
- 0:26Speaker 1: kicked off.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Yeah, it's definitely well received, and yeah, I didn't think
- 0:29Speaker 3: it would be too hard of a sell once people
- 0:31Speaker 3: seeing the big murals up, but they're fantastic.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Honestly, some of the murals that are around the place,
- 0:37Speaker 1: I reckon are just unbelievable. And you see people around
- 0:40Speaker 1: the city lining up getting selfies, taking photos, which is
- 0:43Speaker 1: so nice to say.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Constantly, constantly, I reckon you always. I can't walk down
- 0:47Speaker 3: a lane without seeing at least one person they're taking photos.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Yep.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's a really great thing about it.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I don't know that anybody really anticipated that with these
- 0:57Speaker 1: great murals up on the different walls throughout the city
- 1:01Speaker 1: and also in the suburbs. How big an impact it
- 1:03Speaker 1: would have sort of just in the way that it looks.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think it's And it also changes the
- 1:08Speaker 3: way people move through the city. You see people jigzagging
- 1:11Speaker 3: through lanes and then popping out in arcades that they
- 1:13Speaker 3: probably wouldn't have found. So there's that impact and then
- 1:17Speaker 3: kind of lanes that I don't know, we're a bit
- 1:19Speaker 3: forgotten in areas that Once a murals up there, people
- 1:23Speaker 3: look at it differently, and then little cafes want to
- 1:25Speaker 3: pop up there. They don't want to be on the
- 1:27Speaker 3: main road, they want to be in the back lane
- 1:28Speaker 3: amongst the street.
- 1:30Speaker 2: I reckonly.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I think it's a great thing, you know that we've
- 1:33Speaker 1: done around Darwin City, but it's also moved into the
- 1:35Speaker 1: suburbs now as well.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Whereabouts.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Yeah, so last year was our first year to venture
- 1:40Speaker 3: out of that city sort of zone and we hit Nightcliffe,
- 1:45Speaker 3: Walagi or was it Unguri or was getting mixed up
- 1:48Speaker 3: from Agament and I get other other w Yeah, so
- 1:52Speaker 3: out that way, Nightcliffe was the main area we targeted.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Yeah, we've got a few more this year at Nightcliffe And.
- 1:58Speaker 1: So how many like how many pieces of beautiful artwork
- 2:01Speaker 1: are we expecting to see the years I see.
- 2:04Speaker 3: I always start with the number and I blow it
- 2:07Speaker 3: out of the water because I'm hopeless, and I just yeah,
- 2:10Speaker 3: I always doing more, Yeah, always more.
- 2:13Speaker 2: That's good. I think that's what people want to hear.
- 2:15Speaker 2: They want there to be more of it.
- 2:17Speaker 4: My accountant, does one hear that? Because I fan paying
- 2:19Speaker 4: for them?
- 2:20Speaker 1: Now, mate, tell us who, like, is it just you
- 2:24Speaker 1: or how many artists are involved in all of these murals?
- 2:27Speaker 3: I guess I used to identify as an artist, but
- 2:29Speaker 3: now I'm not chasing artists around, so it'll be careful
- 2:33Speaker 3: what you wish for. And no, So there's probably in
- 2:38Speaker 3: my team, there's there's about three of us, four of
- 2:40Speaker 3: us core, and then we have artists from all around
- 2:43Speaker 3: the country and the world come paint with local artists.
- 2:46Speaker 3: So always a big, big focus on local. Maybe fifty
- 2:49Speaker 3: percent local at least.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Yeah, that's good, I think, and wonderful, you know, to
- 2:53Speaker 1: see some of our indigenous artists as well.
- 2:55Speaker 2: I'm assuming being able to be showcase.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Very highly represented.
- 2:58Speaker 3: You know, we have yeah, the team has indigenous people
- 3:02Speaker 3: working with us, and we have a heap of local
- 3:07Speaker 3: yeah artists.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Now, I understand that the theme this year is looking forward,
- 3:11Speaker 1: So what is that going to mean and how is
- 3:13Speaker 1: that sort of going to translate through some of the
- 3:15Speaker 1: art that we see.
- 3:16Speaker 3: We love to just have like a loose theme every year,
- 3:20Speaker 3: and this one, I think is it was an obvious
- 3:22Speaker 3: choice as far as like we don't want to look
- 3:25Speaker 3: back at COVID and all that, so it's like, where
- 3:28Speaker 3: are we going from here?
- 3:29Speaker 4: What have we learned?
- 3:30Speaker 3: And yeah, also like we've we've had a lot of
- 3:34Speaker 3: territory stuff in the past. Yeah, like lots of birds
- 3:37Speaker 3: and stuff, and we're kind of we're full there, so
- 3:39Speaker 3: we're kind of I don't know, I'm kind of standing
- 3:41Speaker 3: towards a little slightly more I don't know, abstract or
- 3:45Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 3:46Speaker 4: You want.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Something, so what do you reckon? We are going to
- 3:51Speaker 2: say you have.
- 3:52Speaker 4: To come and check it out.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Yeah, we've got I've got some exciting artists. I'm I'm
- 3:56Speaker 3: still although I'm looking for it.
- 3:57Speaker 4: I'm scared. I was like announcing people because so many things.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Have changed over the last couple of years.
- 4:04Speaker 3: I don't see anything game pair shape. But yeah, we've
- 4:06Speaker 3: got some very very exciting walls and artists and even
- 4:09Speaker 3: different surfaces.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Right, So not just sort of the sides of buildings
- 4:15Speaker 1: or some of those more conventional things.
- 4:17Speaker 4: Yeah, we've got sides of buildings. We've also got flaws
- 4:21Speaker 4: and ground. Yeah that sounds really good.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Yeah, how awesome.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Now, tell us how long does it take for some
- 4:27Speaker 1: of these artists to paint some of these massive murals
- 4:31Speaker 1: that we say.
- 4:33Speaker 4: You know, some of the real big ones.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Two to three weeks? Yeah, yeah, some of the smiles.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Every artist paints at different paces too.
- 4:40Speaker 1: So just see how they go and how they track along.
- 4:45Speaker 1: How many people do we have any idea? I guess
- 4:47Speaker 1: it's hard to tell, isn't it. How many people sort
- 4:49Speaker 1: of come to the Darwin Street Art Festival because it
- 4:52Speaker 1: is such a moving beast in the sense that people
- 4:54Speaker 1: can just sort of walk through it their own time,
- 4:56Speaker 1: anytime of the year.
- 4:57Speaker 4: Yeah exactly.
- 4:58Speaker 3: That's a difference, you know, And I love the Fringe
- 5:01Speaker 3: Fest of all Love Darn Festival, but their audiences are
- 5:04Speaker 3: just when it's on it's on. But we we're on
- 5:07Speaker 3: twenty four hours, three hundred and sixty five days a week. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 5:12Speaker 3: we're always there, you know, so nighttime, daytime, all throughout
- 5:16Speaker 3: the year, when it's raining or dry season.
- 5:18Speaker 4: It's it's there and people are still engaging with it.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Good stuff.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Oh well, so it all kicks off August, So from
- 5:24Speaker 1: what I can see, starts on August twelve in the suburbs,
- 5:27Speaker 1: with the CBD area kicking off on the twenty sixth
- 5:30Speaker 1: of August.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Yeah, and we've got a bunch of QR codes and
- 5:33Speaker 3: information on all the older new murals now, so you
- 5:37Speaker 3: want more info.
- 5:38Speaker 2: You can jump on there.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Yeah, you go check them out.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Oh, good stuff.
- 5:41Speaker 1: And that is the Darwin Street Up Festival app. You
- 5:43Speaker 1: can check that out and you'll be able to find
- 5:45Speaker 1: some more involved. It looks like there'll be temporary walls
- 5:48Speaker 1: obviously with pop up will pop up throughout the festival,
- 5:51Speaker 1: along with some hidden artwork as well around the CB day.
- 5:54Speaker 4: Yeah, you got to go looking for it, you got
- 5:55Speaker 4: to go. Hi.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Yeah, we've got we've got some exciting three D stuff,
- 5:58Speaker 3: small stuff, these temporary walls, which is like, yeah, we're
- 6:02Speaker 3: just creating like these more outdoor galleries and spaces that
- 6:05Speaker 3: you wouldn't normally see yep. So yeah, and it's also
- 6:07Speaker 3: a stepping stone for emerging artist to jump on those,
- 6:11Speaker 3: show us what they can do. And then yeah, they'll
- 6:14Speaker 3: jump on the wall next to you.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely well, David Collins, the Street Art Festival director,
- 6:19Speaker 1: we really appreciate your time this morning. Thanks for coming
- 6:21Speaker 1: in and I'm sure we'll chat to you again closer
- 6:23Speaker 1: or once it sort of kicks off as well.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Thanks for having us.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Thank you,
