- 0:10Speaker 1: Hello everyone and welcome into another episode of DiCecco Daily.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I'm Andrew DiCecco, Eagles beat reporter for InsideTheBirds.com. Today was Thursday,
- 0:17Speaker 1: which means we are one day closer to kickoff Eagles
- 0:21Speaker 1: commanders Sunday afternoon. And we'll get to the injury report.
- 0:25Speaker 1: We'll get to some of the things that Vic Fangio
- 0:27Speaker 1: had to say. And a lot of it's going to
- 0:30Speaker 1: center around Jonathan Bernard. And we had a chance to
- 0:33Speaker 1: hear from Jonathan Bernard today. That was really the primary talking.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Point coming out of the locker room.
- 0:39Speaker 1: And... Before we get started, I just want to remind
- 0:42Speaker 1: everybody that my rookie diary with Eagles guard.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Micah Morris, their six-round pick out of Georgia.
- 0:50Speaker 1: It should be available on all podcasting platforms and on YouTube. And,
- 0:54Speaker 1: of course, make sure you're reading that on InsideTheBirds.com. That'll
- 0:59Speaker 1: be tomorrow, I believe. And I'm looking forward to that
- 1:04Speaker 1: season-long series. Micah, I had a lot of fun talking
- 1:07Speaker 1: to Micah. He has a lot of personality to him.
- 1:11Speaker 2: And we have.
- 1:14Speaker 1: As we get to do these every week, we'll learn more,
- 1:17Speaker 1: but right off the bat, we have some common ground
- 1:20Speaker 1: in our love for movies, and this is a really
- 1:25Speaker 1: young developmental prospect that I like coming out of college,
- 1:28Speaker 1: and I thought he did some good things in training camp,
- 1:30Speaker 1: and he'll get to learn probably behind the scenes. I
- 1:33Speaker 1: can't imagine that he's going to be active on game day.
- 1:37Speaker 1: You never know, but he's the 10th offensive lineman in
- 1:40Speaker 1: a very deep room, but he'll get to learn from
- 1:42Speaker 1: the likes of Landon Dickerson and Tyler Steen, Cam Juergens,
- 1:47Speaker 1: and then, of course, you have Chris Cooper, the offensive
- 1:49Speaker 1: line coach, who Micah had a lot of really good
- 1:51Speaker 1: things to say about, and he's not alone in that.
- 1:54Speaker 1: That's been a common sentiment throughout the summer, whenever asked
- 1:58Speaker 1: about Chris Cooper, and so far, the sample size is limited,
- 2:02Speaker 1: but I think you have to be really intrigued with
- 2:05Speaker 1: what you've seen Chris Cooper in terms of just overall
- 2:08Speaker 1: player development, a lot of the young linemen that we've
- 2:10Speaker 1: talked a lot about. So anyway, make sure you're checking
- 2:13Speaker 1: out the Rookie Diaries series all season long.
- 2:17Speaker 2: I'm very much looking forward to that. Okay.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Jonathan Grenard and Eli Stowers were both listed as limited Wednesday,
- 2:24Speaker 1: and that was again the case Thursday. Grenard, of course,
- 2:28Speaker 1: with the pack. Eli Stowers with the hamstring. But that's
- 2:31Speaker 1: a positive sign. It's a positive development for that they
- 2:35Speaker 1: were back out there for the second consecutive day and
- 2:38Speaker 1: working in a limited capacity. Again, we're going to have
- 2:40Speaker 1: to wait and see how things go. Vic Fangio said
- 2:43Speaker 1: that they're taking things day by day. He also mentioned
- 2:46Speaker 1: the practice element of it as it regards Jonathan Grenard.
- 2:51Speaker 1: And even though he is a veteran, there's certain practice,
- 2:58Speaker 1: real practice like the Eagles have on the field and
- 3:00Speaker 1: not so much the mental rep aspects that have to
- 3:03Speaker 1: be taken into account. And with Stowers, we'll just have
- 3:06Speaker 1: to see. Soft tissue injuries can be fickle, and it's
- 3:10Speaker 1: not something that the Eagles are going to rush. I
- 3:12Speaker 1: can't imagine they would, and we'll see how things progress.
- 3:15Speaker 1: There's still one more day, Friday's practice, when you'll get
- 3:18Speaker 1: the injury report in the afternoon, and we'll have a
- 3:21Speaker 1: little bit more clarity as to where both players lie.
- 3:26Speaker 1: And Vic Fangio today spoke about the safety position. It's
- 3:33Speaker 1: not really a surprise. But he did confirm that veteran
- 3:37Speaker 1: Marcus Epps will be the safety. Beside Drew McCuba when
- 3:41Speaker 1: the Eagles are in nickel, let's not forget that Cooper
- 3:43Speaker 1: DeGene will be the safety when the Eagles are in base.
- 3:46Speaker 1: And he cited the solid summer that Marcus Epps had.
- 3:51Speaker 1: And he also mentioned that it didn't have anything to
- 3:53Speaker 1: do with Michael Carter and his versatility being a valuable
- 3:57Speaker 1: asset that maybe they didn't want to put him in
- 4:00Speaker 1: a starting.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Role and keep him available to fans. deploy him wherever
- 4:03Speaker 2: they see fit. He said, no, no. So that tells
- 4:07Speaker 2: you that Vic is.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Really confident in Epps, and there's a lot of trust there.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I've talked a lot about that, that I don't believe
- 4:14Speaker 1: that you have to be a superstar to thrive at
- 4:18Speaker 1: the safety position of Vic Fangio defense.
- 4:20Speaker 2: What Vic seems to prioritize.
- 4:23Speaker 1: is players who are sharp-minded, assignment sound. They're not going
- 4:27Speaker 1: to make mistakes. They know where they need to be.
- 4:30Speaker 1: And Epps is that. He checks off.
- 4:31Speaker 2: All of those boxes. He's been around for a while.
- 4:34Speaker 1: He's familiar with this system, and he's going to provide
- 4:36Speaker 1: a stabilizing presence there next to a young player in
- 4:40Speaker 1: Macuba who, let's not forget, played just 11 games, 10 starts.
- 4:44Speaker 2: So Epps is someone that I don't have a ton
- 4:48Speaker 2: of questions about. You're not going to necessarily.
- 4:51Speaker 1: see the splash plays that Michael Carter can give you.
- 4:54Speaker 1: But Michael Carter is new to the safety position, and
- 4:57Speaker 1: a lot of what he was asked to do this
- 4:59Speaker 1: summer was new. And so with that, mistakes can happen.
- 5:05Speaker 1: You can become sort of a high variance player early
- 5:08Speaker 1: on as you're feeling your way out. And while I
- 5:11Speaker 1: believe that Michael Carter would elevate the ceiling of the defense,
- 5:15Speaker 1: Marcus Epps gives you a little bit more of a
- 5:18Speaker 1: known commodity there on the back end. And I think
- 5:20Speaker 1: him being that communicator who has a really firm grasp
- 5:24Speaker 1: of the defense, it'll help Akuba, it'll help the secondary
- 5:28Speaker 1: in general, and that's one of the selling points of
- 5:32Speaker 1: having someone like Marcus Epps and giving him such a
- 5:35Speaker 1: prominent role is because There's not a lot of guesswork there.
- 5:38Speaker 2: You know what you're getting.
- 5:40Speaker 1: And I think he is someone that I sort of
- 5:42Speaker 1: view as a glue guy on the back end, sort
- 5:45Speaker 1: of a leader back there.
- 5:47Speaker 2: And that will be where things stand as it pertains
- 5:52Speaker 2: to safety.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Not really a surprise there. That's the way things were
- 5:55Speaker 1: pointing all summer. So Jonathan Bernard, we heard from him today.
- 6:00Speaker 1: And that was somebody that obviously we hadn't heard from
- 6:04Speaker 1: for a while because he's been injured.
- 6:06Speaker 2: But as I mentioned before, he's been available. He's been
- 6:10Speaker 2: active on the field. He's been around, I should say.
- 6:13Speaker 1: And, you know, seemingly attentive on the sideline. He's been
- 6:18Speaker 1: a presence every single day at training camp. We saw
- 6:20Speaker 1: him out there. And it seems like he's been doing
- 6:23Speaker 1: a lot of work behind the scenes. He's doing everything
- 6:26Speaker 1: possible to get him ready, get himself ready. But I
- 6:29Speaker 1: just don't think that at least in my estimation, and
- 6:33Speaker 1: if you listen to some of the things that Bernard
- 6:35Speaker 1: had to say, and I'll try to quote some of
- 6:37Speaker 1: that from what I have here, it seems like he's
- 6:41Speaker 1: taking things day by day as well and doing everything
- 6:44Speaker 1: that he can to get.
- 6:45Speaker 2: The pecs stronger. And so.
- 6:49Speaker 1: I'll try to get some of those quotes for you
- 6:52Speaker 1: from Bernard and what he said today in the locker room.
- 7:03Speaker 1: He mentioned balancing wanting to get back out there, but
- 7:08Speaker 1: also being able to prioritize his health and slowly build
- 7:10Speaker 1: back up. And he said, yeah, that's literally the game
- 7:15Speaker 1: right now.
- 7:16Speaker 2: And he said, I could feel it. good doing a
- 7:19Speaker 2: couple reps and doing X, Y, Z.
- 7:21Speaker 1: And then you may feel a little something, but at
- 7:23Speaker 1: the same time, it's a matter of this is a marathon.
- 7:26Speaker 2: So as much as I'm ready to get.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Out there, I just got to listen to my body,
- 7:31Speaker 1: listen to the training staff and know when it's and
- 7:34Speaker 1: I'll know when it's right. And he said, when asked,
- 7:39Speaker 1: are you playing this Sunday? He said, that's up to them.
- 7:42Speaker 1: I'm literally just trying to work day by day. I'm
- 7:46Speaker 1: literally out there every second trying to show what I
- 7:49Speaker 1: can do, and it's up to them, but I feel
- 7:52Speaker 1: pretty solid.
- 7:52Speaker 2: I do.
- 7:54Speaker 1: And then he mentioned, do you feel like you could
- 7:57Speaker 1: play on Sunday?
- 7:58Speaker 2: And he said, that's not for me to decide. I
- 8:00Speaker 2: feel good, though. I will say I feel I'm in
- 8:02Speaker 2: a good spot.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Just to know that I know that I'm working every
- 8:07Speaker 1: day to continue to just try to get this thing stronger.
- 8:11Speaker 2: He said, we're close. I know that.
- 8:13Speaker 1: So there you have it there with, with Bernard. That
- 8:16Speaker 1: was just some of the quotes that I was reading from, uh,
- 8:18Speaker 1: from my transcription. And the nature of the injury is
- 8:23Speaker 1: very difficult. It's a pec injury. You have to get
- 8:26Speaker 1: that stronger. You have to probably build yourself back up
- 8:29Speaker 1: physically because I can't imagine he was able to lift weights.
- 8:33Speaker 1: And I know that I'm, you know, reiterating a lot
- 8:36Speaker 1: of what I've talked about, but this is really the big.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Talking point of the day here. And, I think that's
- 8:42Speaker 2: something important to note, that.
- 8:47Speaker 1: While he is out there on the field and he
- 8:48Speaker 1: is trending in a positive direction, it wouldn't surprise me
- 8:52Speaker 1: if he doesn't play.
- 8:52Speaker 2: And if he does, he's going to be on a
- 8:55Speaker 2: pitch count.
- 8:55Speaker 1: And I think with this injury, the last thing you
- 8:59Speaker 1: want to do is run the risk of re-aggravation and
- 9:02Speaker 1: starting the clock all over again.
- 9:03Speaker 2: And.
- 9:06Speaker 1: It might take a little bit of time just to
- 9:08Speaker 1: build back up that stamina and get those practice reps.
- 9:11Speaker 1: And let's not forget, he's going to be asked to
- 9:13Speaker 1: do things in this defense that are totally new to him.
- 9:16Speaker 1: And so when you take all that into account and
- 9:19Speaker 1: you realize that it really hadn't been since December prior to.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Right now that he's really been on the field practicing.
- 9:26Speaker 1: There's a lot of lost time that even a veteran
- 9:28Speaker 1: of 29 years old who's been in different defensive systems
- 9:31Speaker 1: are going to have to account for, and there may
- 9:34Speaker 1: be a little bit of a feeling out period, and
- 9:36Speaker 1: you have to learn how to drop into coverage, you
- 9:38Speaker 1: have to learn terminology, the verbiage, and all those things,
- 9:41Speaker 1: and Grenard talked about that. He did mention that it's
- 9:44Speaker 1: just been super frustrating not being able to be out
- 9:46Speaker 1: there on the field participating. You can only do so
- 9:50Speaker 1: much in the meeting rooms and things like that, but
- 9:53Speaker 1: what defensive line, or I should say outside linebackers coach
- 9:57Speaker 1: Jeremiah Washburn has said is that he's been an A-plus
- 10:00Speaker 1: in the meeting room. So he's been very diligent behind
- 10:02Speaker 1: the scenes, and that's something that we're not privy to.
- 10:05Speaker 2: But we have heard that from Bernard.
- 10:08Speaker 1: We've heard that from his position coach, from Vic Fangio
- 10:12Speaker 1: at different points of the summer. So you just got
- 10:14Speaker 1: to kind of let this play out. We'll have more
- 10:17Speaker 1: clarity on Friday. Something that I'll be keeping an eye
- 10:22Speaker 1: on Friday, by the way, and I've really started to
- 10:25Speaker 1: think about this after listening to special teams coordinator Michael
- 10:28Speaker 1: Clay speak today, the special teams aspect, and I think
- 10:36Speaker 1: about it through the lens of Morocco Underwood, who's a
- 10:41Speaker 1: young rookie long snapper, and I would imagine that you're
- 10:44Speaker 1: going to see the commanders try to.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Maybe test that.
- 10:47Speaker 1: It's something that dawned on me the more I thought
- 10:49Speaker 1: about it, The Commanders don't have much of an edge
- 10:53Speaker 1: in this game. The Eagles are the clearly better team,
- 10:58Speaker 1: certainly in the trenches, which is where I think the
- 10:59Speaker 1: game's going to be won. But the special teams, Michael
- 11:05Speaker 1: Clay spoke about their gunners and their vice guys, Percy
- 11:09Speaker 1: Butler being one of them, who's a really good player.
- 11:11Speaker 1: I liked him out of, I believe, Louisiana Lafayette coming
- 11:13Speaker 1: out as a defensive back. And then I think this
- 11:17Speaker 1: could be one of those games where you see a
- 11:19Speaker 1: team like the Commanders try to see where Underwood, a
- 11:22Speaker 1: young long snapper, is and maybe provide some pressure, which
- 11:26Speaker 1: really puts a spotlight on your protection team, of course.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Namely.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Will Shipley, who is your personal protector on punt. So
- 11:34Speaker 1: those are all things that I'm sure many don't think about,
- 11:37Speaker 1: but it is something that will be in the back
- 11:40Speaker 1: of my mind because special teams is one phase that
- 11:42Speaker 1: doesn't get talked about until there's an error or there's
- 11:46Speaker 1: a big play like the Rams game last year, but
- 11:48Speaker 1: I'll be keeping an eye on that. The leaders on
- 11:51Speaker 1: this group, let's not forget that over the last couple
- 11:54Speaker 1: of years, Michael Clay– And he mentioned that's not something
- 11:58Speaker 1: that he's going to make a fuss about because the
- 12:02Speaker 1: nature of being a special teams coach is that you're
- 12:04Speaker 1: constantly going to see a lot of those players that
- 12:06Speaker 1: are prominent members of your unit turn over. They've lost
- 12:10Speaker 1: Van Sumeren. They've lost Cam Latu. They've lost Kylan Granson,
- 12:15Speaker 1: Sidney Brown. There's probably other players that I'm not thinking
- 12:19Speaker 1: of right now. JT Gray didn't make it past the
- 12:21Speaker 1: first preseason game. Josh Jobe was a casualty after the
- 12:28Speaker 1: 2024 summer.
- 12:30Speaker 2: He's now starting for the Seahawks, and I'll have a
- 12:32Speaker 2: comment on.
- 12:33Speaker 1: That because I do have to, you know, there's something,
- 12:38Speaker 1: there's a sentiment out there that I just feel the
- 12:40Speaker 1: need to sound off on a little bit.
- 12:41Speaker 3: But Fall is the season where everyone gets busier, more calls,
- 12:46Speaker 3: more customers, more chances for something to slip through the cracks,
- 12:49Speaker 3: and staying ahead means having the right system, not just

- 16:10Speaker 3: prices and an experience made for philly fans 21 and up.
- 16:15Speaker 1: With uh With Michael Clay, there's a lot of young
- 16:18Speaker 1: players on his unit, and you can expect someone like
- 16:20Speaker 1: a Will Shipley, who's now in his third year, Jeremiah
- 16:23Speaker 1: Trotter Jr., Keeley Ringo, and Smile Mondin Jr., who's in
- 16:29Speaker 1: his second season. But Keeley Ringo is a player that
- 16:32Speaker 1: Michael Clay singled out as being a leader in this group.
- 16:35Speaker 1: He's embraced his role, and that's something that I believe
- 16:40Speaker 1: you're going to see manifest throughout the season. He's a
- 16:43Speaker 1: long-tenured guy and one of the best special teams players,
- 16:47Speaker 1: one of the best gunners, at least, in the NFL.
- 16:49Speaker 2: So that's just something that I wanted to throw out there.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Josh Jobe had the game-winning interception to seal the game.
- 16:59Speaker 1: You all know that I've been a Josh Jobe guy.
- 17:01Speaker 1: I was coming out of Alabama, even more so watching
- 17:04Speaker 1: his skill set, the physicality, his ability on special teams, and...
- 17:09Speaker 1: I can see the potential, but I'm seeing a lot
- 17:12Speaker 1: on social media that this is one that the Eagles missed.
- 17:16Speaker 1: How could they let him go? That's a mark on
- 17:19Speaker 1: Howie Roseman. No, that's not the case. Josh Jobe was
- 17:24Speaker 1: given chances here in Philadelphia. He was very uneven in
- 17:27Speaker 1: those opportunities. He was very grabby. In fact, I remember
- 17:30Speaker 1: asking Vic Fangio in the summer of 2024 about Josh
- 17:34Speaker 1: Jobe and Eli Ricks. And he was fairly praiseworthy of Ricks,
- 17:38Speaker 1: but he said that Jobe needs to clean up the PIs.
- 17:40Speaker 1: That's something that he was flagged in the first quarter,
- 17:44Speaker 1: I think, in that game on Wednesday night.
- 17:46Speaker 2: It didn't work for him here in Philadelphia.
- 17:48Speaker 1: And that's fine because not every system is a fit
- 17:51Speaker 1: for every player. He went to Seattle, started out on
- 17:54Speaker 1: the practice squad, worked his way up, and seized his opportunity.
- 17:57Speaker 1: He seemingly is a good fit for that defense. But
- 18:00Speaker 1: to say that the Eagles missed on that and how
- 18:03Speaker 1: could they not give him chances, they did give him chances.
- 18:06Speaker 1: And I'm saying this as someone who's been a proponent
- 18:08Speaker 1: of Josh Joe for years now.
- 18:12Speaker 2: He wasn't able to put it together for whatever reason.
- 18:14Speaker 1: And sometimes it's as simple as the light goes on
- 18:17Speaker 1: for players at different stages of their career, and it
- 18:20Speaker 1: takes a little longer for some.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Maybe that is it.
- 18:24Speaker 1: He was slow to develop, and now in Seattle he's
- 18:26Speaker 1: starting to hit his stride. But I think the Eagles,
- 18:30Speaker 1: and they had that logjam there of Keeley Ringo, Eli Ricks,
- 18:32Speaker 1: and Josh Jobe.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Jobe didn't have it.
- 18:36Speaker 1: He had sort of a rocky summer in 2024, a
- 18:38Speaker 1: little inconsistent up and down, and it was pretty apparent
- 18:44Speaker 1: that he wasn't going to be able to help the
- 18:45Speaker 1: Eagles as a defensive back.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Very good special teamer.
- 18:48Speaker 1: I would say that during his time as being a
- 18:50Speaker 1: special team or where he's not really factoring that much
- 18:52Speaker 1: because he's a starter now, he was one of the
- 18:54Speaker 1: best in the league. But he wasn't good enough to
- 19:00Speaker 1: latch on to the roster as an extra defensive back.
- 19:03Speaker 2: And the other part of it is, I'm saying, and
- 19:05Speaker 2: I saw this last.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Night, the Eagles kept Peeley Ringo instead of Josh Jones.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Keeley Ringo was a draft pick. Keeley Ringo is also,
- 19:15Speaker 1: I believe, four years younger, if not more, than Jobe.
- 19:19Speaker 1: And he also has the athletic profile. So he's a
- 19:22Speaker 1: toolsy player that the Eagles want to continue to work
- 19:24Speaker 1: with and see what they can get out of him.
- 19:26Speaker 1: So naturally, yeah, if you're torn between the two, it
- 19:30Speaker 1: makes a lot of sense, especially where they were in 2024,
- 19:33Speaker 1: to go with someone like Keeley Ringo. So this isn't
- 19:36Speaker 1: some short-sighted move by the Eagles. It wasn't some hasty transaction.
- 19:42Speaker 1: So context is really important in everything, but in this
- 19:48Speaker 1: case in particular, and I just wanted to highlight that.
- 19:50Speaker 2: That.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Anyway, that's it for me. That's going to do it
- 19:53Speaker 1: for this episode of DiCecco Daily. I'm Andrew DiCecco, and
- 19:56Speaker 1: I'll catch you all
- 19:57Speaker 2: On the next one.
