Latest / Amigos, Afraid! / 53. Castles and Canines: Tower of London Ghosts and the Black Shuck
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Amigos. Afraid this week we're
- 0:04travelling across the pond. I'll be uncovering the Tower of
- 0:07London's strangest hauntings, including two missing Princess,
- 0:11the ghost of Anne Boleyn, and a phantom bear guarding the halls.
- 0:15And I'll be diving into the legend of Black Shark, a
- 0:18mysterious black dog from English folklore said to haunt
- 0:21the countryside and appear before tragedy.
- 1:00Crunch, crunch. We got some snacks, corn
- 1:03tortilla chat. We will try our hardest not to
- 1:05eat while recording. But if you try those Trader
- 1:08Joe's rolled corn tortilla chips, chili and lime, you know
- 1:13what I'm talking about. I don't even like Takis but
- 1:16these are like crack. Genuinely pretty good.
- 1:21How you doing Brian? I'm doing good.
- 1:24You know how last week you were really hitting the nail on the
- 1:28head, driving it in real hard, but how hot it was and how
- 1:31you've been struggling? That's been me dude.
- 1:34Yeah, it's still me. I don't know what.
- 1:38Is causing probably El Nino, the storm that's coming in the next
- 1:41couple weeks. But it's been hot and muggy and
- 1:44not a cute way. Who's kid El Nino?
- 1:46What? Yeah, the Nino.
- 1:48Mucoso. Yeah, Tormenta, then Leon, Nino.
- 1:52Wow, that's. So funny that you say Tormenta.
- 1:55Why? You'll see.
- 1:57Oh, shoot, I'm excited. Welcome back everyone.
- 2:01Hi guys, welcome back to your weekly A a meeting.

- 2:54I don't know. That's the thing, I'm not a.
- 2:55Streamer, there is no chat here. And there's no likes.
- 2:57So go ahead and thank Brian for putting together this website.
- 3:02It looks so freaking good. Thank you.
- 3:04His creative juices were. They're flowing, dude.
- 3:07All over that that website I juiced.
- 3:09All over the website. I had to look up so many YouTube
- 3:13tutorials to figure out how to do it because it is really
- 3:17difficult. And if it changes from one
- 3:20moment to the next, just know that's me on there trying to fix
- 3:23things because there's no spell check.
- 3:25I'd be typing things in wrong. My guys like your coding,
- 3:29putting software, I don't know, putting up a firewall.
- 3:32Dude, I'm embedding stuff. What?
- 3:35I'm like changing aspect ratios. Ooh that's crazy.
- 3:40Every dude well afraid of coding.
- 3:43Afraid of coding such a cool feature y'all?
- 3:46If you do have a story and you've like sent it our way and
- 3:49we just haven't got to it, hey, that's a good chance to like
- 3:52drop it in our in our inbox again and it's comes directly to
- 3:55us. Yeah, be the first.
- 3:56So cool. Shout out to Brian.
- 3:58Yeah, there's a big button at the top right under our header.
- 4:01It says submit your story. There's a section where you can
- 4:04also read the descriptions of all of the podcast episodes.
- 4:07It is a labor of love and so far there's only like 6 episodes
- 4:11because it takes a long time but I'm working on it.
- 4:14They're so good. It's so convenient for you to
- 4:17just let me read this. Let me get and take a gander at
- 4:20this. Nah.
- 4:21Next. Guess what?
- 4:23The next one, it's gonna have a little description.
- 4:25Google did, aside from us being Googleable, it tells you like
- 4:29the little like AI summary saying, Hey, this is a podcast
- 4:32by so and so it tells you. Do you want me to recommend an
- 4:34episode for you? I don't know if it's hit you.
- 4:37I did not see that. The fact that we have like, as
- 4:40of this episode, we've got 53 episodes.
- 4:43That's like more than 51. Dude, it's more than 52.
- 4:47That's crazy. I can't even count to 53.
- 4:51Wait, what episode was this? This is 53. 53 Gotcha.
- 4:54This is 53. Yeah, that's wild.
- 4:58I appreciate. I appreciate it, man.
- 5:00Thank you. I appreciate you you're giving
- 5:02me content to work on. I was talking to them, not to
- 5:04you. Yeah, sorry.
- 5:05Well. I could be grateful to you.
- 5:07Thank you. I guess, I guess what does that
- 5:11mean? I don't know, I guess check out
- 5:15the website I guess. Follow us on Instagram and
- 5:18TikTok. I guess.
- 5:20I guess. Last week, Jerry's story was so
- 5:23interesting that it led to our most popular Instagram reels so
- 5:27far, like 1500 views. The rest of them are sitting at
- 5:31like 500. I still hate you and my boys to
- 5:34be honest but that's so cool. Thank you so much y'all, you're
- 5:37building my confidence. Yeah.
- 5:39No, it's, it's true. We're, we're getting better and
- 5:42I think we're the more we do it, the less we put on like any kind
- 5:46of show or like adjust our voice in any way.
- 5:50Because the first couple of episodes, why are we talking so
- 5:53deep? So deep and so slow?
- 5:56That's what we knew till we were, then we.
- 5:59Were code switching. We didn't know who was going to
- 6:00listen. We had to play it safe.
- 6:03Yeah, now they know who we are, and now they're all amigos.
- 6:07And you're afraid. Of our voices from the first
- 6:10episodes. Dude, some of those are crunchy
- 6:13anyways. Anyways, do you have a good
- 6:16week? Yeah, I had a great week.
- 6:19So far, so good. Happy Thursday.
- 6:21I forgot what to mention that earlier.
- 6:24Pretty exciting weekend. Just kidding.
- 6:26We did a lot of chores. We did go to the beach.
- 6:31That was fun. I went to the beach.
- 6:33We're. Let's go to the beach.
- 6:35Each No, we can't quote her. Sorry.
- 6:38We don't support Maga Minaj. I'm so sorry.
- 6:40You're right, I thought it was Ke$ha.
- 6:42I blocked her on my Spotify. Straight up thought that was
- 6:45Ke$ha, never mind rude. Ke$ha would never.
- 6:48I apologize, I'm speechless. I don't know what to say
- 6:53anymore. You were at the beach.
- 6:55That's right, I was at the beach.
- 6:57Just a quick little story there. We were there for like maybe
- 7:00over an hour. It was kind of gloomy.
- 7:01We were hoping to see the sunset.
- 7:03Obviously that didn't happen, but not too crazy packed.
- 7:07Found a good little spot while Dulce was swimming and being the
- 7:11Otter that she is, I was sitting down being the non beachgoer
- 7:14that I am and just keeping a watchful eye and it was cool.
- 7:19The water did not reach us the whole time we were there, except
- 7:22the right. When we were packing up to
- 7:24leave, I was picking up the lawn chair, folding it up, of course,
- 7:28struggling to try to put away a lawn chair.
- 7:31And what does this massive wave decide to do?
- 7:33Reach exactly where we're at. It swipes my Crocs, gets a
- 7:38blanket wet, of course, in the sand, gets on everything else.
- 7:42Yeah, it was pretty hectic and a reminder that I don't like the
- 7:45beach. The ocean can never be trusted.
- 7:47Right when you turn your back to it, it strikes.
- 7:50Alexa told me today to never turn your back on the ocean.
- 7:53She's a beach girl and I was telling her cuz when I went to
- 7:57the beach on Friday there was a warning saying.
- 8:00Don't turn your back to the Turzo beach.
- 8:02No, otherwise I would have paid attention to that.
- 8:05There's a whole flag system. There's green flag, yellow flag,
- 8:09red flag. And I'm like, OK, that's good to
- 8:11know. I didn't see no freaking flag
- 8:14anywhere. So I'm like la, la, la, la, la.
- 8:16The waves are kind of crazy. I heard that it's shark week.
- 8:20The sharks are coming up. The water temperatures are
- 8:22rising, and so is the sea level. Wow.
- 8:25And that's just because of global warming.
- 8:27But Yep, there was a portion. There was a moment where Jesse
- 8:32and I were just chilling. I had just taken like a picture
- 8:36of him on my little instant camera.
- 8:38So I was holding that. I was holding my phone.
- 8:41I was walking around our umbrella and a wave comes and
- 8:45just sweeps over our entire little spot.
- 8:49Everything gets wet. Me and Jesse jump up, pick up
- 8:52our blanket, run it like 10 feet back.
- 8:56Everything is soaked. Jesse's like, where's my phone?
- 9:01No. I'm like, oh, it's, it wasn't
- 9:04the blanket. Like when we picked it up, all
- 9:05that stuff went in the middle. Like it has to be in here.
- 9:07So we lift everything up. There's there's no phone.
- 9:10He checks his bag. There's no phone like, Oh no, Oh
- 9:14no. He's kind of start panicking and
- 9:17I'm like, let me check your location just in case I open it
- 9:20up, kind of fearing that his location is going to be in the
- 9:24ocean. But no, it says it's exactly
- 9:26where we're standing. So we're like, what?
- 9:28That's weird. And we're we're looking, don't
- 9:31see anything. And he's like, damn, no, it took
- 9:33my phone. What are we going to do?
- 9:35And I don't know if it's out of the corner of his eye, but he's
- 9:38kind of like scanning the sand. The corner of his phone is
- 9:41sticking up from being buried in the sand.
- 9:44Wow. Yang sit out perfectly fine.
- 9:47Good, didn't get wet. Nope.
- 9:49It probably just fell off when you guys pull the blanket and.
- 9:52With the water like coming back it brings sand with it so it
- 9:55probably buried it a bit but. That's wild.
- 9:58After that, this really really really really really old man
- 10:02white, just to give you a reference in a tiny tiny tiny
- 10:07tiny tiny Speedo comes up to us. Oh yeah, good for him.
- 10:10And he's like, you guys, Latinos, Oh, fuck, yeah.
- 10:19He's like, oh, what team are you guys rooting for for the World
- 10:22Cup? And now, since you're a sports.
- 10:26Guy, I was like all over the World Cup, Mexico, blah, blah,
- 10:29blah, blah, blah. He was like, I don't know if he
- 10:32was trying to pick us up, just trying to be friendly.
- 10:34He was real interested in Jesse's tattoo, so he was
- 10:36looking him up and down. But he was, he was funny.
- 10:39We did have a long conversation about music and going to
- 10:42concerts. Tells us his name is Jerry.
- 10:44So Jerry, you have a wonderful future.
- 10:46Can't wait for that for you. Dang.
- 10:48But he mentioned how it was a yellow day, like a yellow Flag
- 10:51Day. And I'm like, dude, yeah, I saw
- 10:52that sign. I didn't really know what it
- 10:54meant. He's like, well, look at the
- 10:55lifeguard. There's a giant flag up there
- 10:57that's a yellow. My God.
- 11:00Yeah, so then today, Alexa, was like red Flag Day.
- 11:04You're not allowed in the water. It's too dangerous.
- 11:06Yellow flag. You don't turn away from the
- 11:08water because it can. It has a moment of stillness
- 11:11followed by intense moments of craziness.
- 11:13And then green is come on in, we're fine.
- 11:17I did not look for any flags. Was there even a lifeguard?
- 11:22Couldn't tell you. Jerry, you can't swim.
- 11:24You have to make sure there's a lifeguard.
- 11:26There. Well, I'm not in the water.
- 11:27I wouldn't put myself in. That, but your little honey bee.
- 11:30You're the love of your life. Oh, I had ego vision to her.
- 11:32And what are you going to do when she's in the water and
- 11:35there's no lifeguard to? Fight the ocean, I guess.
- 11:37OK, just start swinging. Yeah, I just started swinging on
- 11:39the ocean. And then retrieve my damsel in
- 11:44distress. She just comes to you.
- 11:47We're like, damn, we were standing the whole time.
- 11:50I was just punching the water looking like a crazy person.
- 11:52And she was literally just toes deep in water.
- 11:55Actually, what are you doing? I tried to take you from me.
- 11:59Aside from that, that was my entire weekend.
- 12:02I stayed in Saturday, Sunday, had a massive headache on
- 12:05Saturday and then from just being out in the sun all day the
- 12:08day before. Yeah, yeah, it's been hot.
- 12:12Can't really do much. It's nicer today.
- 12:14Today wasn't super hot. It's still too.
- 12:16Hot. I'm still sweating, my thighs
- 12:17are still sticking together. Oh my God, I'm let's see, my
- 12:22Joanies are sticking out of my little booty shorts.
- 12:25I I'm excited to go see Motionless and White this
- 12:29Friday. Nice tomorrow, because today's
- 12:31Thursday. Your life is going to change.
- 12:33I have been waiting for this moment for a long time.
- 12:36The last time I saw them was 2012.
- 12:38Oh, so you've seen them before? I've seen them before.
- 12:40Nothing new. But I haven't seen them recently
- 12:43because they went on tour twice or two or three times already
- 12:46since 2012. But yeah, COVID and all that
- 12:49stuff obviously took big portion of that away.
- 12:52But I have not seen him, so I'm excited.
- 12:54Matt's going to go shout out. Matt.
- 12:55Thanks, Woo. Shout out Matt.
- 12:57We're going to be head of banging the night away.
- 13:00How romantic. I know, I know.
- 13:03Very very like emo. Romantic.
- 13:04If they play werewolves, record a little clip for me, I love
- 13:07that. Song.
- 13:07I haven't seen it on the set list, but if they happen to play
- 13:09it I will record it. It's because I asked.
- 13:12Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You you called Chris?
- 13:14Yeah, yo, Chris Dog, you know that song Werewolf?
- 13:19Yeah, I get it. Cuz you're cuz you're that.
- 13:21Doll, you got that dog and you. I love I love how things just
- 13:24work out. Everything happens for a reason.
- 13:26Everything is connected, nothing is random dog I just.
- 13:30That's a fun word. I had a weird deja vu today
- 13:34where I also said those things of like, wow, everything's
- 13:36connected. I don't remember what it was.
- 13:39And I just happened. To say but I said nothing's a
- 13:41coincidence. No, it is not.
- 13:43Oh, because we met Jerry at the beach right before that we met
- 13:46Tom. Nothing is a coincidence.
- 13:49Nothing is a coincidence. You think that was You think
- 13:51that was random? The two people you met randomly
- 13:54out in the world? No.
- 13:55I was meant to Tom and Jerry. Yeah.
- 13:57The same day, within a couple hours, yeah, that's my life.
- 14:00How's yours? Not as cool as that?
- 14:06Well, friend, what haunted you this week?
- 14:08Well, I still have the books that I have yet to return to my
- 14:10local library. I was haunted by the fact that
- 14:13I'm going to be late at returning my books and I don't
- 14:15never. I don't know how to do that.
- 14:17Fabio, if you're listening, don't yell at me.
- 14:19No. Man alone.
- 14:21Angry e-mail. So I'm still haunted by ghosts.
- 14:25I'm still on a ghost kick. I swear.
- 14:28After this I will take a break next week.
- 14:30I'll come at you with some sort of Cryptid or folklore or
- 14:33something. Just we'll take a little break
- 14:36from Ghosts on my end. OK.
- 14:38But this week I've been haunted by the Tower of London, what I
- 14:43believe to be one of the most haunted places in all of
- 14:46England. Noise.
- 14:48That was Australian. Are we surprised that a building
- 14:52that is over 1000 years old has an insanely tragic history of
- 14:57violence and grief? Sounds to me like it's the
- 15:00perfect recipe for ghosts of Royals, prisoners and even
- 15:05animals to wander the corridors of this majestic fortress.
- 15:10Animals. Animals The Tower of London's
- 15:14history dates back all the way to the year 1071070. 1070,
- 15:22That's more than 1069. Dude, and we've been in the
- 15:252000s for. Like 2 years. 26 years at least.
- 15:30Wait, no, wait. This is where we find out.
- 15:34I can't do math. 10,000 to 20,000 is 10,000.
- 15:38Is we're gonna OK? We're skipping.
- 15:42We're skipping. Someone do that math for me.
- 15:44Thank you. Wait.
- 15:45Sorry. Sorry.
- 15:46No, no. No, really good.
- 15:48You know, when like two people are like doing like, oh, like
- 15:50working on a math problem and stuff.
- 15:51It's been like something that's come across my feet recently.
- 15:54I'm always that person that's like also trying to do it in
- 15:56their head, but I'm never gonna find the answer.
- 15:58So I'm just like. Waiting.
- 15:59For someone. And then as soon as someone does
- 16:01it, I'm like. I guess that's what I got
- 16:03that's. Exactly what I got, so sorry.
- 16:06I think it's like 930 year. I don't know.
- 16:08I don't know, almost 1000 years or more, maybe or less.
- 16:13William the Conqueror had gathered Masons from neighboring
- 16:15lands to build the strongest building England had ever seen.
- 16:19The locals were gagged when it was finally completed.
- 16:23They had never seen a building of this scale in their lives.
- 16:27Wow, I know. It's like you live in a shack
- 16:28and you leave one day and all of a sudden it's like Disneyland
- 16:32right in front of you. Wow, a 20 foot building, 2
- 16:35stories, Two stories. How does IT support itself?
- 16:38How magic? William wanted the peasants to
- 16:41be so impressed. I don't know if they're
- 16:43peasants. He wanted them to be so
- 16:44impressed that they couldn't even think of rebelling against
- 16:47him. Like Oh my God, this is amazing.
- 16:50Of course we can never rebel. Look, they can make a two-story
- 16:52house. Three stories, 4.
- 16:55That initial building outlived centuries of leadership and
- 16:58purpose. Henry the Third and Edward the
- 17:00First went on to add huge defense walls in the 13th
- 17:03century. They also upgraded them out.
- 17:06Low key. It's giving medieval Property
- 17:08Brothers. Never seen that.
- 17:12Never seen that show. They even made the main building
- 17:15white to give it a fresh modern look.
- 17:17You know, the fresh modern. Look of the 13th.
- 17:22Mid Century 13. It's like dirty dusty.
- 17:27No, it's white and then it gets dirty.
- 17:29That's how they get the 13th century.
- 17:30Look. Yup, there you go.
- 17:31Thank you. For a while royalty would live
- 17:34there on and off since it was heavily protected.
- 17:37I wonder that instead of like a summer home, it was the
- 17:41commoners are mad at us home, let's hide here for the summer.
- 17:46At one point peasants did breakthrough the barriers in
- 17:481381 and maybe that's why the Royals stopped living there.
- 17:52The Tower of London was also a mint until 1810.
- 17:56There they made all the nation's coins and protected the family
- 17:58jewels. Over the years, the Tower had a
- 18:02little bit of everything. Historic events, lavish
- 18:05ceremonies, mass bloodshed. A zoo.
- 18:09A zoo. A zoo.
- 18:10King Henry the Sixth was murdered there in 1471, two
- 18:14young Princess disappeared in 1483 and Boleyn was executed by
- 18:19sword. In fact, there is 3 executed
- 18:23Queens currently buried there. Respectfully about his bitches
- 18:26only. More than two.
- 18:28During the Tudor period, it was a state prison.
- 18:31During the First World War, German spies were brought there
- 18:34to be killed. That's like a recent history.
- 18:36That's like the last 100. Years and it was still being
- 18:38used for executions. That's a lot of energy, right?
- 18:41Yes, without explaining what I discovered there.
- 18:44What do you think would be seen there?
- 18:48Well. Just based on the the quick
- 18:50little summary I gave you. A lot of damn, you're putting me
- 18:53on the spot. It's like a pop quiz.
- 18:54You're like mine's juggling to try to find.
- 18:57You're always there. Residual hauntings every other
- 19:00episode. Well, I was going to say all the
- 19:02people that died there. Let's just try that again.
- 19:06Oh, Brian, that reminds me of residual haunting.
- 19:08Wow, really. Yes, you think?
- 19:10Yeah, Yeah, I. He dropped his iPad.
- 19:13That's what he gets for trying to be sarcastic and laughing.
- 19:15Guys, I think I'm drunk even. Look at the circumstances of
- 19:21three Queens being buried there. All three of them were killed
- 19:25violently with the entire nation watching.
- 19:28I feel like that just adds even more energy to the whole just
- 19:33chaos that kind of existed within those like 5-6 walls.
- 19:37It's a really weird shape. If these walls could talk, I
- 19:41wonder what they'd say. So what spirits are haunting the
- 19:44halls of the Tower of London? Allegedly, there's a freaking
- 19:47butt ton. First are the ghosts of the
- 19:51little Princess. The spirits of these two young
- 19:55boys are said to haunt the Bloody Tower, a rectangular
- 19:58tower that sits between the inner and outer ward of the
- 20:00property. It originally served as the
- 20:03Watergate. Before the scandal.
- 20:05Wow. But is now mostly known for its
- 20:08connection to the disappearance of 12 year old King Edward the
- 20:115th and his younger brother Duke Richard of York.
- 20:14According to the book that I pulled this from, Phantom
- 20:16Encounters Buy Time Life books, the 12 year old was deemed King
- 20:20of England upon the death of his father Edward the 4th in 148312
- 20:25year old king. Ain't that wild.
- 20:27However, his uncle Richard, Duke of Gloucester.
- 20:31I didn't Google how that was pronounced.
- 20:33I'm so sorry. He was the brother to King
- 20:35Edward, wanted the throne for himself.
- 20:39He looked at this 12 year old and said I could take him and
- 20:42his brother too. I've seen Game of Thrones I I
- 20:45know where this leads. I.
- 20:47Wonder where they got inspiration from?
- 20:49So the uncle stole the throne, claiming that the two brothers
- 20:51were illegitimate heirs. So he went real political on
- 20:54them. You supper.
- 20:57He confined them to the bloody tower where the boys would
- 20:59disappear from history. Legend has it that they were
- 21:03murdered in that tower, but no one knew.
- 21:06They just fell off the face of the earth.
- 21:08No one knew where they ended up. Be your own family.
- 21:11And be your own. Uncle, be your own uncle.
- 21:14Visitors claim to see the spirits of two young boys in and
- 21:17around that tower. They're described to be floating
- 21:19around in nightgowns holding hands.
- 21:21Aw, that's sad. I know that's they were gone
- 21:26together. I wonder if they're trying to
- 21:28escape like together and that's why they're kind of.
- 21:30Roaming the halls. Scene going around corners and
- 21:32stuff. That's so sad.
- 21:35Trying to play hide and seek with their freaking uncle.
- 21:38No Allegedly the two children skeletons were discovered under
- 21:41a staircase in another part of the property.
- 21:44The skeletons looked like the bodies had been put into a
- 21:46wooden chest and they matched the size of the 12 and 9 year
- 21:49old. What's crazy is that they
- 21:51initially tossed out the bones, not really thinking much of
- 21:54them. They're like, oh just random
- 21:56bones I've found under a staircase.
- 21:57Yeah, no big deal. They.
- 21:58Just throw them out. At some point though, someone's
- 22:00light bulb went off and thought, Oh my God, wait, the Princess
- 22:03didn't. Didn't 2 Princess like lived
- 22:06here and disappeared and no one found them again?
- 22:09Yeah like 200 years ago isn't that crazy?
- 22:13Wait. They had to go digging in the
- 22:16trash to find them. They eventually had a whole
- 22:19ceremony to like give them a proper burial, but for a while
- 22:22they were in the trash. I wonder if that proper burial
- 22:25and that ceremony allowed them to rest.
- 22:29Yeah. Or if they're still happening,
- 22:31then it was. I don't have dates on when all
- 22:33these ghosts were seen because of the book says that they've
- 22:36been seen through centuries. When I did some research and
- 22:39other articles, exact same thing.
- 22:41A lot of these cases are through the years.
- 22:42Gotcha. Not necessarily super modern.
- 22:45Another popular spirit is that of Anne Boleyn.
- 22:48You know who she is. That's a no.
- 22:51She was the second wife of King Henry the Eighth and was
- 22:54executed after someone. The king most likely spread
- 23:00rumors that she was committing adultery.
- 23:03That and the fact that she did not give birth to a male heir.
- 23:08The T, according to historians, is that allegedly, the king had
- 23:12already been looking around for another lady, and once he found
- 23:15her, he was quick to dismiss Anne by murder.
- 23:18Yeah, which is kind of crazy because divorce was very much a
- 23:22thing already. Oh my God.
- 23:24And homie had already divorced his first wife to be with Anne
- 23:28and said now you got to kill her.
- 23:29Typical. By cutting her head off.
- 23:32No, he, he had something like he was, he was jealous or
- 23:36something, I don't know. He.
- 23:37Already had his eyes on another lady and that same lady ended up
- 23:40being his next wife he. Was just a piece of shit.
- 23:42Yeah, yeah, yeah. Miss Anne was a bad bitch until
- 23:45death. She requested a French swordsman
- 23:49be her executioner because the typical executioners used axes
- 23:53and were very very, very, very bad at it.
- 23:57Like like very bad at it. Like they would swing and not do
- 24:01a clean cut through the neck so they were still alive.
- 24:05That's so crazy for a bit. Game of Thrones and.
- 24:07They still had to go like chop, chop, chop, she said.
- 24:10Nah, I want a professional if we're going to do this.
- 24:12Give me the French. And I bet he was sexy.
- 24:14She was killed in the grassy field in the front of the jewel
- 24:17house. That's where they held the
- 24:18family jewels. There's a huge monument out in
- 24:22that field, but allegedly people on Reddit say that's not exactly
- 24:26where it happened. Oh, OK, OK.
- 24:28They have this whole like monument in the center of a
- 24:30little like grassy field. People are like, no, no, she
- 24:32died like right in front of the house.
- 24:34This is not the location. Her story, her like ghost
- 24:39stories are a little scary. Her spirit is seen with and
- 24:42without her head in the tower of Chapel of Saint Peter and
- 24:46Vinkula, leading an entire horde of ghost back and forth through
- 24:51the Chapel. Just mobbing it with a bunch of
- 24:54spirits. In the freaking church.
- 24:57That's Oh my God, imagine, imagine just you know what, like
- 25:01I can't sleep. Let me go to the let me go to
- 25:02the church real quick. Let me repent real.
- 25:04Quick, let me repent real quick. You know, I think I'll, I'll,
- 25:06I'll have a better night's sleep.
- 25:07There's just a whole group of ghosts here.
- 25:10That lady's holding her head. I'm.
- 25:13Gonna go back to sleep. Literally, how do you continue
- 25:16with life if you walk into a church and see it filled with
- 25:18ghosts? Yeah, it's it's just, yeah.
- 25:23What? What can you do?
- 25:24My life is different now. I've seen things.
- 25:26Yeah, it's never see church the same again.
- 25:30Lastly, and most excitingly, Jerry, you're going to love this
- 25:34one. It is the ghost of a bear
- 25:38haunting Marten Tower. Have you ever heard of a ghost?
- 25:41Bear. No, Only Cocaine Bear.
- 25:44That's literally what I was telling Alexa.
- 25:45Wow. So you ever heard of Cocaine
- 25:47Bear? She's like, yeah, I saw the
- 25:48movie. You ever heard of Ghost Bear?
- 25:50Wow. So King Henry the First had a
- 25:54zoo. They kept a large variety of
- 25:57animals in the towers throughout its history.
- 25:59Sometimes it was monkeys, sometimes it was tigers or
- 26:02lions, once it was a flying squirrel, and sometimes it was
- 26:07bears. Nice.
- 26:08I also read that at one point there was an elephant, but I
- 26:11don't understand how they could get an elephant inside.
- 26:14Inside the zoo. OK, when I say zoo, it's like
- 26:17they kept these animals from my understanding in rooms of the
- 26:20tower. Oh Dang.
- 26:23Yes. Like the lion would have a
- 26:25bedroom probably a little bigger than like my living room or
- 26:28something in the towers. If you're British and you know
- 26:32that's wrong, correct us. But that's what I understood.
- 26:34OK. The zoo cycled through animals
- 26:37until 1835 when a lion ended up mauling a soldier.
- 26:42I'm genuinely surprised that a soldiers death was deemed tragic
- 26:45enough for them to get rid of it.
- 26:47You'd think it was like some sort of like Lord or lady or
- 26:50something, but now I guess they really valued their soldiers.
- 26:53They were like, what? That's that was that was Jason.
- 26:56God no, not Jason. He was so funny, damn.
- 27:00Who's going to? Who's going to run Comedy night
- 27:02now? Dude, we're going to have to.
- 27:03We have to get rid of the zoo. Or just a lion Now I got rid of
- 27:08the whole zoo, no? Anyways, a polar bear had been
- 27:14gifted to King Henry the Third in 1251 by the King of Norway.
- 27:19The king a little ungrateful. Allegedly he was not super happy
- 27:23with it. He would have preferred a pair
- 27:25of socks. Guess socks are hard to come by.
- 27:28I'd. Imagine.
- 27:30He also already had a grizzly bear named Martin.
- 27:34So like the novelty was kind of like worn off.
- 27:36What's the movie called? That's Baddington.
- 27:38Just kidding, Mawton. Allegedly, both bears were
- 27:43treated pretty badly. Aw.
- 27:45Man, I mean expected. So sad.
- 27:49On a very strange night at 1816, a guard was making his usual
- 27:54rounds when he stumbled across a massive grey bear blocking the
- 27:58jewel room door. The soldier George Offer did
- 28:02what any normal guard would do. Protect the jewels.
- 28:05Duh. Because the.
- 28:06Bear's going to steal them. Yep.
- 28:08Or eat them, I don't know. I don't know what what goes on
- 28:11with the grey bear? I've never seen a grey bear.
- 28:13He aimed at it with his bayonet, lining up the blade.
- 28:18He braced himself and tried to stab the bear, but the blade
- 28:22went straight through. That's what I figured when you
- 28:24say grey bear. It hit the wall behind him and
- 28:26got lodged in the door. The bear vanished and George
- 28:32probably pissed himself before collapsing.
- 28:35A doctor was called in when George was found on the floor in
- 28:37a fit, mumbling to himself. There was no signs of him being
- 28:41intoxicated and was seen in good spirits right before the
- 28:44incident. No bear was ever found.
- 28:47That incident alone was enough to kill George.
- 28:51Allegedly. He grew super weak following the
- 28:53incident, constantly repeating the story over and over.
- 28:57He died not long after with no clear explanation.
- 29:00Maybe he died of fright. Wow.
- 29:04That's just three of the many, many, many ghosts believed to be
- 29:09haunting the Tower of London. From Princess to Queens to Bears
- 29:12in between. I feel confident in saying the
- 29:15Tower of London might be the most haunted place in all of
- 29:18England. Which of these ghosts would you
- 29:20be the most scared to run into? I mean, I would say the ghost
- 29:24bear just because it's so big. I mean, if it's a grizzly or
- 29:28whichever one of the bears, I mean, still grizzly or a polar
- 29:31bear, massive bears. A bear inside of a building.
- 29:34Yeah, scary yeah, cuz I mean yes, it's one thing seeing a
- 29:37human, but like to the human eye, sometimes you mistake
- 29:39spirits goes for like an actual person totally valid.
- 29:43And your brain just like clocks it for what it is.
- 29:46But a bear that doesn't make sense and then just like
- 29:48standing somewhere where it's like what?
- 29:50And then no, that's. I think that's the most scary
- 29:53because you can easily convince yourself that your mind is
- 29:56playing tricks on you on making you see a person.
- 29:58Exactly, Exactly because. Your mind is always trying to
- 30:00connect patterns. I think the most immediate
- 30:02pattern of seeing something is the shape of a human like you.
- 30:06You convince yourself, Oh my God, that was the shadow of a
- 30:08person or something. You never think, Oh my God, is
- 30:11that a bear? Yeah, yeah.
- 30:13The the laundry, the The Dirty laundry in the chair, like, oh,
- 30:16that's like a person sitting down.
- 30:18Yeah, with their arm dangling off the freaking doorknob.
- 30:20Yeah. You don't think, Bear?
- 30:22Oh, that's so crazy. I would also be traumatized by
- 30:26Anne Boleyn walking around holding her freaking head.
- 30:28There's that too. Yeah, yeah, yeah, there's that
- 30:29too. Or I mean, like, hey, like past
- 30:31the rock. And it's like, you think it's a
- 30:34ball, throw me the ball, throw me the ball like.
- 30:36Throw me that pigskin. Oop oop, it's your head.
- 30:39No, no thanks, Kobe ISO. As far as I'm aware, there's
- 30:45been no paranormal investigations done at the
- 30:47property. Since it's considered an active
- 30:49royal palace. Access after dark is severely
- 30:52limited. I want to see if maybe Ghost
- 30:54Adventures or Ghost Hunters had done anything there to see if I
- 30:56can find like any kind of video evidence.
- 30:58Nah, nothing. But that's what haunted me this
- 31:01week, the Tower of London. London Bridge is folly of not
- 31:07not the one that's not the one. That's so cool, friend.
- 31:10Thanks. Thank you for sharing.
- 31:12A lot of residual energy for sure.
- 31:16It was also kind of silly and goofy, which I liked.
- 31:20I figured you might enjoy it, especially the bear story.
- 31:22Mm, hmm, that was the best one. That was the best one.
- 31:25I think being gifted a polar bear and not being like grateful
- 31:30or just shook with emotion is crazy because.
- 31:35You call me? A bear that is the that's the
- 31:40biggest bear at least. I mean, I'm sure at the time it
- 31:42was still the biggest, considered one of the biggest
- 31:44bear. How did they even get them?
- 31:45Where are polar bears in like the continental Europe?
- 31:49Do they exist there? I don't know you.
- 31:50Said you said Poland polar bear. No, no, but the the king that
- 31:54gifted it to King Homie. I think I said the king of
- 31:56Norway. Norway there.
- 31:57You just say Norway. Yeah, for sure.
- 31:59They. Got to be polar bear.
- 32:00Did they go to Antarctica? Probably a North Pole.
- 32:04Leave it to. How do they bring a bear on a
- 32:06boat? I'm sure they have their ways,
- 32:09hunters. They have their contraptions.
- 32:11I I don't. I don't.
- 32:12Know, and I bet it was inhumane. Yeah, probably.
- 32:15That's so sad. PETA, we need you on this case.
- 32:19I am befriending the ghost bear and using my druidic powers to
- 32:24make it a friend. Nerd.
- 32:26Nerd. And a tech, Brian.
- 32:29Nerd. And a tech friend show up in
- 32:30Brian's room at 2:00 in the morning.
- 32:34A random bear appears in his room.
- 32:36That sounds like a good time. A grey bear.
- 32:38Oh, a silver bear. Oh yeah, Guy.
- 32:43Wow, thank you friend, that was so cool.
- 32:44You're welcome and I've never heard of it.
- 32:46Wes, I had to be Me, me. Go.
- 32:48What haunted you this week? What haunted me this week,
- 32:54honestly, it's going to be the heat.
- 32:57Again, it's going to be. It's going to.
- 32:58Be the heat I'm being, I'm being defeated.
- 33:01I'm losing this battle, guys, but I'm not losing the war
- 33:04because today we're talking about England's devil dog.
- 33:07Why? We're both in England, both in.
- 33:09England this week, dude. We did not give each other a
- 33:12heads up this time. Which?
- 33:14Maybe we should, because last week's episodes had no
- 33:16connection other than being Mexican.
- 33:18I mean, that's a. Connection.
- 33:19That's a connecting right there. That's connecting.
- 33:22Yeah, I'm talking about England. When when you did mention when
- 33:25you started off your story, I'm like fuck, fuck, fuck.
- 33:27Like, is it in the same region? Is it like for for some reason
- 33:30connected to this tower? No, it's not.
- 33:33So that was very funny. I think after doing this podcast
- 33:38for a while, we've learned one thing.
- 33:40What? Every culture has a creature
- 33:42that people swear you should not encounter after dark.
- 33:45Absolutely Mexico. La La chusa, La La chusa El
- 33:50freaking nawales the chupacabra by corona.
- 33:54Ireland has the banshee, which we haven't talked about, but.
- 33:58Put a pin in that. Put a pin in that.
- 34:00Put a pin. Yeah.
- 34:01The Appalachian Mountains have all kinds of strange creatures
- 34:04people warn you about. We're not going to Appalachia
- 34:06anytime soon, so. We are not whistling after dark.
- 34:09No. And England.
- 34:12England apparently looked at a normal dog and said, you know
- 34:16what would make this terrifying? Make it the size of a horse,
- 34:20give it glowing eyes and make people think of death.
- 34:25That's exactly how they said it. They're scared of a Great Dane.
- 34:33That's that dog. Looks like a horse to me.
- 34:37Brian, are you thinking if you were to see this huge, massive
- 34:41dog, can I pet that dog? I would Can I pet that dog?
- 34:47OK. Can I pet that dog?
- 34:48I. Was going to say, if not then I
- 34:50would ask you to leave the room and I will continue this session
- 34:52by myself. But you said yes.
- 34:54So yeah, you get to stay, you get.
- 34:56To stay. Yeah.
- 34:56Great Dane. Before the Great Dane, before we
- 35:00talk about Black Shuck specifically, we have to talk
- 35:04about why stories like this exist in England in the 1st
- 35:07place. Oh OK scholar.
- 35:09The British Isles have a long history of black dog legends.
- 35:14And when I say long history, I mean these stories go back
- 35:18hundreds of years. That's like hundreds dude.
- 35:21That's almost thousands. Across different parts of
- 35:24England, Scotland and Wales, people told stories about
- 35:27mysterious black dogs that appeared on lonely roads, near
- 35:31churches, around graveyards, or in places where people felt
- 35:35vulnerable. The names changed depending on
- 35:38the region. Some people called them black
- 35:40dogs, basic, real, original. Others called the creatures like
- 35:44these bar Guest or Padfoot. But the idea stayed pretty
- 35:48similar. A large supernatural dog
- 35:51appearing when someone was alone.
- 35:53Sometimes it was considered a warning, and other times it was
- 35:56considered a protector. Whoa, why do you think dogs
- 36:01became the animal people were scared of in England?
- 36:03Because today, before you answer, when people look at
- 36:06dogs, they think of humans. Best friend.
- 36:10So sorry, I'll go back to the question.
- 36:12I don't know, that confuses me because I'm very rarely scared
- 36:17of a dog unless it is very big and it's aggressive.
- 36:20That's the only time I'm scared of a dog.
- 36:22I see one out in the wild. Oh my good.
- 36:24Come here. I have similar similar viewpoint
- 36:30except when I lived in Mexico some of those dogs were not the
- 36:33nicest and and growing up not in Mexico but growing up here there
- 36:39were certain alleys that had loose dogs and they would belong
- 36:42to someone there but as long as I drove by with my bike they
- 36:45were chasing my ass and like you they would.
- 36:48Get them out of our alley. There were always Chihuahuas.
- 36:51I got bit by a Chihuahua. The only time I've been bit by a
- 36:53dog was a Chihuahua. So I think we're we're honing in
- 36:58on to this black dog should should have been a Chihuahua.
- 37:01A black Chihuahua. I'm scared.
- 37:03Dude, so dogs have always had this weird place in human
- 37:07culture. They're companions, but they're
- 37:09also guardians. They protect homes, they watch
- 37:13over the dead. In some ancient traditions, they
- 37:16can sense things humans can't. So if you're living hundreds of
- 37:19years ago and you're trying to explain something strange you
- 37:22saw on a dark Rd. a giant black dog actually makes a lot of
- 37:26sense. It's familiar enough that your
- 37:29brain recognizes it. Literally just talked about
- 37:32this. Yeah.
- 37:33But strange enough that it becomes something supernatural.
- 37:37The black shark comes specifically from East Anglia,
- 37:41an area in eastern England that includes Suffolk and Norfolk.
- 37:47If you picture the landscape, it almost feels designed for ghost
- 37:49stories. The region has old villages,
- 37:51farmland, forests, marshes and winding roads that cut through
- 37:56the countryside. Never been more scared.
- 37:58Centuries ago, travelling through those areas at night was
- 38:02not like it is today. Obviously there's no St. lights,
- 38:05there's no cell phones. You can call someone FaceTime
- 38:07along the way. There's no, yeah, there's no
- 38:10quick way to call for help. So if you're walking home alone
- 38:13after sunset, you're dealing with a lot of real dangers.
- 38:17Anyways. The name Black Shuck.
- 38:19Most researchers believe the word Shuck comes from the old
- 38:23English word skuka, which roughly translates to a demon or
- 38:27evil spirit. Some people believe it may also
- 38:29connect to old words describing something shaggy or hairy, kind
- 38:33of like Brian. OK, come for me.
- 38:35Really. Wean my hair out of it.
- 38:38Which is a pretty unfair reputation for a dog, because
- 38:41all dogs are Angel. Babies, of course, Until they
- 38:43bite you, the Chihuahuas. Descriptions of Black Chuck
- 38:47vary, but there are details that appear over and over again.
- 38:50People usually describe it as an enormous black dog with rough,
- 38:54shaggy, firm. Some accounts describe it as
- 38:57being the size of a large dog, while others make him much
- 39:00bigger, almost impossible in size compared to a horse or
- 39:04other large. OK, if it's shaggy, I don't
- 39:07think it's a Great Dane. We have something weird going
- 39:09on. There's also another breed of
- 39:11dog which I will find at the end of the episode, but his massive
- 39:14and has like that shaggy complexion.
- 39:16Its eyes are usually the feature people remember the most.
- 39:19Many stories describe them as glowing red, almost like fire in
- 39:23the darkness, and other versions say his eyes were green.
- 39:27There are even some unusual accounts describing it with a
- 39:31single eye. One detail that appears in many
- 39:34stories is that the black Shuck doesn't behave like a normal
- 39:38animal. People often describe seeing it
- 39:41appear suddenly, watching them, and then disappearing.
- 39:45With its one eye. With its one eye, to some people
- 39:48it's just winking. Had something caught in its
- 39:50eyes? It's flirting.
- 39:51It's trying to be coy with my fiery.
- 39:54Eyeball. The idea of Black Chuck watching
- 39:57people is actually important because in many versions of the
- 40:00legend it isn't described as a creature that hunts people.
- 40:03It's more of an omen. People believe seeing it could
- 40:07mean something bad was coming, a loved one becoming sick or close
- 40:10to death. Maybe tragedy would enter the
- 40:13community, and this is where Black Shuck connects to other
- 40:16folklore. Reef covered with La Lechusa,
- 40:18for example. The fear isn't always that the
- 40:20creature itself is going to attack you.
- 40:23Sometimes the fear is what its presence represents.
- 40:26Whoa, the warning. Whoa, OK, so like it's the same
- 40:31thing but it represents itself in different animals based on
- 40:34the region? Correct.
- 40:36That's so interesting. I like that.
- 40:37It's like. When I'm in Mexico, I'm an owl.
- 40:38I'm a barn owl when I'm in England.
- 40:41Yeah. What are people most afraid of
- 40:43in that area? They they signed a what's it
- 40:48called? They did the kapole.
- 40:49They asked 100 English what the most scary and the scariest
- 40:53animal is, and black dog was one of them.
- 40:57The most famous Black Shook story comes from 1577, during
- 41:02one of the most violent storms England had experienced.
- 41:06Tormenta. We mentioned that at the
- 41:08beginning. That's why I laughed at the
- 41:10talking about the storm. El Nino.
- 41:12It was just an El Nino guy. It's just no nothing.
- 41:14It's a black shark named Nino. Literally.
- 41:18The story takes place in the town of Bungay, Suffolk.
- 41:23On August 4th, 1577. Powerful thunderstorm moved
- 41:27through the area. People at the time described it
- 41:29as an extraordinary storm. Lightning was striking, the
- 41:33weather was chaotic, and during the storm, villagers gathered
- 41:36inside Saint Mary's Church, seeking shelter and praying for
- 41:39the storm to pass. Then, according to the legend,
- 41:42something entered the church. A massive black dog.
- 41:48It sounds like a movie. The story was recorded by a man
- 41:52named Reverend Abraham Fleming, who published an account
- 41:56describing the event. According to the story, the
- 41:59creature ran through the church while people panicked.
- 42:02Two people were reportedly killed during the incident and
- 42:05others were injured. Then the creature disappeared.
- 42:10Now, whether someone in 1577 actually saw a supernatural dog
- 42:14is something people still debate today.
- 42:16But what makes this story important is that it wasn't just
- 42:19passed down through whispers. It was written down and
- 42:22distributed. The account became one of the
- 42:24reasons Black Shuck became such a famous figure in English
- 42:28folklore. If it's written down, it's.
- 42:30True receipt. Show me the receipts.
- 42:33Oh, oh, oh, you have them. You typed that arm printed fuck
- 42:36Reverend. True shit.
- 42:38And he's a reverend. Oh, we got to listen to the
- 42:40reverend. He's the church.
- 42:42But Brian, yes. That wasn't the only church
- 42:45supposedly visited by Black Shuck that day.
- 42:49There's things all over the country.
- 42:52Legend has it that the creature appeared again, this time in
- 42:56Blithburg, another Suffolk village.
- 43:00The village is home to the Holy Trinity Church, a beautiful
- 43:04medieval church that still stands today.
- 43:06And on that same stormy day in 1577, people inside that church
- 43:11were supposedly experiencing the same terrifying weather.
- 43:14Lightning, Thunder, heavy rain, yadda yadda yadda.
- 43:17Chance of dog. But during the service, the
- 43:20legend says the doors opened and a massive black dog entered the
- 43:23church. Once again, people described a
- 43:26creature unlike any normal animal, a huge black dog moving
- 43:30through the building while everyone panicked.
- 43:33According to this story, several people were killed and the
- 43:36creature eventually disappeared. These people are so pious, so
- 43:40religious. Yeah, it's the craziest storm
- 43:42they've ever witnessed, but they still got to go to church.
- 43:45They're like, Oh my God, I can't believe old man Van Winkle just
- 43:49died anyways. Back to praying back.
- 43:51To praying. Our Father who are in heaven,
- 43:54I'll leave me in the name. Bark, bark, bark.
- 43:57Who was that? The doors they've opened,
- 44:00There's a dog. There's a dog.
- 44:02There's a dog they turned into like New York.
- 44:03There's a dog. That's a fucking dog.
- 44:06No, that sounded. He didn't in the church.
- 44:08There's a dog in the church. So, Brian, you're probably
- 44:12wondering, did this dog allegedly go from one church to
- 44:15another? Well, then the span of four
- 44:18minutes. I don't know the time.
- 44:20I don't know the time. They didn't say a time.
- 44:22I always said the same day, different churches, same time
- 44:25according to the weather. OK, that's the part where
- 44:28folklore starts doing what folklore does best.
- 44:32Think about how the story would have sounded to someone living
- 44:34in 1577. You hear about this unbelievable
- 44:37storm, then someone says a giant black dog appeared in a church
- 44:41in the next town. Then another person says,
- 44:44actually it happened here too. Well, we got the same thing
- 44:47happened to us. Prayer man.
- 44:49We drank the same holy water that day.
- 44:51Brav what? Brav, Brav.
- 44:53We brought a dog. We we drank the same blood of
- 44:56Christ that day. Bravo was laced, I promise you.
- 45:00Bravo, are you taking a piss? You're taking a piss in my holy
- 45:03water. Like no, I saw the black dog.
- 45:05At that point, the story starts becoming less about what
- 45:08happened during the storm and more about what people believe
- 45:10the storm meant. What did it mean, Jerry?
- 45:13What did it mean? They were trying to make sense
- 45:15of things that they didn't understand.
- 45:18A violent storm could destroy homes.
- 45:20Lightning could kill someone instantly.
- 45:22A church could be damaged. Oh my God, not the church, not
- 45:25the church. Today we have scientific
- 45:28explanations for those things, but hundreds of years ago people
- 45:31often looked for deeper meaning. It was the dog.
- 45:34Was it a punishment? Was it a warning?
- 45:38Was something supernatural Trying to communicate a creature
- 45:41like Black Shuck gave people a way to explain chaos.
- 45:44One of the most famous parts of that story in Blithburg is the
- 45:48damage supposedly left behind. There was proof.
- 45:52Whoa, paw prints on the wall. Close.
- 45:55Wait, really? According to local legend, the
- 45:57black Shuck left Holy Trinity Church.
- 45:59He it damaged the wooden door with its claws.
- 46:03Visitors today can still see marks on the church door that
- 46:06many people connect to the legend.
- 46:09Now, historians have debated those marks.
- 46:12There are natural explanations, of course.
- 46:14The door is hundreds of years old.
- 46:16Wood changes over time, it warps, it ages and repairs can
- 46:20all create unusual marks. But if you're standing in front
- 46:23of that door and someone tells you those marks came from a
- 46:26demon dog that attacked this church almost 450 years ago,
- 46:32it's easy to understand why the legend survived.
- 46:33I believe it. Came at me with that voice and
- 46:37accent. I'm believing anything you tell
- 46:38me. And I'm wearing, like, a really,
- 46:40like, tattered shirt. I have the little newspaper boy
- 46:43hat that's also really dirty. Got some chaps on.
- 46:46Not chaps. What are the overalls?
- 46:47Yeah, Yeah. And that's how I would sound.
- 46:50And I'm like, 4 foot 2 holding a pipe.
- 46:52Yep, Yep, Yep. What I also found interesting is
- 46:56that the Black Shark became connected with churches
- 46:58specifically, and that tells us a lot about that time period and
- 47:02medieval and early modern England, churches were not just
- 47:04places people went on Sundays, they were the center of
- 47:07communities. They represented safety, order,
- 47:10and protection. So having a supernatural
- 47:13creature enter a church would have been incredibly powerful
- 47:16symbolism. Blasphemous.
- 47:18Practically the place where people went to feel safe was
- 47:20suddenly invaded by something terrifying.
- 47:23It's almost like the story was saying if something this
- 47:26powerful can enter a church, nowhere is completely safe.
- 47:31Oh, that was scary. Now this brings me to one of my
- 47:35favorite parts of this legend, because despite the Devil Dog
- 47:39nickname, not every story paints Black Shuck as evil.
- 47:43Some versions actually describe it as a protector.
- 47:47Some versions actually describe it as a protector.
- 47:50There are stories from East Anglia where people claimed a
- 47:53large dog followed them while they travelled at night.
- 47:56At first they were afraid. Obviously if a giant mysterious
- 47:59dog appears behind you on a dark Rd. your first thought probably
- 48:02isn't. Hell yeah I have a guardian now.
- 48:06But according to these stories, the dog would walk with them
- 48:09until they reach their destination safely, then it
- 48:11would disappear. Wow, it's like a passage.
- 48:14My dog, my job here is done and then poof.
- 48:17Wow. Have a funny little segment for
- 48:21this part. Archaeologists discovered the
- 48:24remains of a very large dog, at least in Abbey in Suffolk.
- 48:28Immediately people started asking, did they find the black
- 48:31shark? No, it was just confirmed to be
- 48:34a regular house dog. A great game, a big regular
- 48:37house dog. With every story we read, I come
- 48:39to appreciate this more and more than the last time.
- 48:42The feeling that maybe this world is bigger and stranger
- 48:44than we understand. 1000 years ago that fear had four legs and
- 48:48glowing eyes. Today it might just be the
- 48:51strange noise outside your window, but the feeling is the
- 48:53same. One final question for you.
- 48:56Shoot. You're walking through the
- 48:58English countryside at night. You hear something behind you.
- 49:04You turn around and there's a black shark standing there.
- 49:08Do you? Yes, you have an accent because
- 49:11you're in the English countryside.
- 49:12OK, run. Try to take a picture or accept
- 49:18that this is your life now and ask him where he wants to go.
- 49:22I would hope I'm one of those people that it's just helping
- 49:24along its path and maybe this is the dog delivery service giving
- 49:28me a new dog. OK, the dog distribution system.
- 49:31Come here, come here, puppy. There's no other dog.
- 49:35He is the jiggle boy. There is, there is no other like
- 49:38stray dog in the distribution system.
- 49:39And it's like, well, we have this legend, this black shark.
- 49:44Sure, it's because I'm the chosen 1, Jerry on the chosen 1.
- 49:48You're a wizard, Harry. All you've been chosen to own
- 49:52the shark. I'm the coolest in Essex, in
- 49:59Sussex. What's the village?
- 50:02I'm the coolest, most chillest person.
- 50:06That's that's that sounds like Donald Trump.
- 50:09I'm done with accents. Yesterday I allegedly I did a
- 50:13really good Michael Jackson one, but it's never coming back.
- 50:16Did it out of nowhere. He just pulled out his Michael
- 50:19Jackson voice and it sounded really good.
- 50:22He practiced this I. Don't.
- 50:24It sounded like you. Did.
- 50:25No, It was divine intervention. Anyways, I'm keeping that dog.
- 50:31Yeah, I'm at that dog. I'm going to see also like if
- 50:35it's a 5050 and it appears behind me and I'm walking, I'm
- 50:39gonna assume it's a like a protect a protector.
- 50:42We're might as well hope for the best if your chances are 5050.
- 50:45If it decides to kill me, what better way than to go out head
- 50:48on than being destroyed and mauled by a supernatural dog?
- 50:54I deserved it. Spectral supernatural dog.
- 50:56I did something. I deserve it.
- 50:57Yeah. Yeah, I did something.
- 50:58I disrespected the chanekas here that are, that came from Mexico,
- 51:01that are living in this forest now.
- 51:02And they sent word to the other cryptids on Cryptid book.
- 51:06And they and they sent it after me.
- 51:09I really like this story. Yeah, so I had a lot.
- 51:13I had a really good time. Obviously animals, it's going to
- 51:16be my main jam, but it was really fun because there were so
- 51:19many like recorded tales. There were so many recorded
- 51:25tales regarding the experiences, the specific stories that are
- 51:28connected. I didn't add it in in obviously
- 51:31my my script, but there was there's a town or in that area.
- 51:35They some places really like accept the folklore and they,
- 51:40you know, use it to to use it as like a identifier like, Yep,
- 51:44this represents us. This is who we are.
- 51:46This is going to get us tourists invested in this.
- 51:49Yep, Yep, Yep, Yep. But it just reminds me of like
- 51:51the Pacific Northwest or like Oregon that like just embodies
- 51:55the Cryptid. I was about to say, it reminds
- 51:57me of, I don't remember what city it is, but the one where
- 52:00they have a Mothman statue. I don't know where that is, but
- 52:03there's a city that has a giant Mothman, Yeah.
- 52:06Yeah, or like anywhere you go in Oregon, there's like the the
- 52:08whole Bigfoot. One just up in Northern
- 52:11California, they had Bigfoot cutouts.
- 52:13Everywhere, yeah. Like they just, they accept it,
- 52:15that they just take it. It's fun, it's silly, you never
- 52:19know, it could be true. I love it.
- 52:22Our imaginations have to pull from some sort of reality.
- 52:26Who's to say that we can't will it into existence?
- 52:29Why not the demon dog or? Demon Dog.
- 52:32I'm going to name it. I'm going to name it.
- 52:36Boo Boo. His name is Boo.
- 52:39Boo. My black shucks name is Boo.
- 52:42That there's Boo shook. Oh my God, my.
- 52:45Thighs are. I went real country right there,
- 52:47sorry. So yeah, we got dogs, we got
- 52:51London towers. We got haunted bears.
- 52:53We got bears. We it was a It was a menagerie
- 52:57of animals today, two of them. Two of them specifically.
- 53:02But I mean, you mentioned elephants.
- 53:03I. Know flying squirrels.
- 53:04But none of those were ghosts, just the dog and the bear.
- 53:07That we know of. True ghost flying squirrel dude.
- 53:11Scared. Imagine just a little phantom
- 53:14squirrel, just like flying across from your cabinet to the
- 53:17to the door. You just hear like your
- 53:20bookshelf rattling from up there.
- 53:22That's just Chewy the flying the ghost squirrel.
- 53:27It's our pet. Ghost squirrel.
- 53:29That's so cool man. That was fun.
- 53:31That was a very silly episode. I like that a lot.
- 53:34The black shook, so if you see big supernatural spectral dog.
