Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Ladies, gentlemen, welcome to another episode of the Bust One
- 0:05Speaker 1: with the Boys Spring Tour.
- 0:06Speaker 2: We are with coach dyling Ham.
- 0:08Speaker 3: Do you want to talk about what just happened out there?
- 0:11Speaker 3: You guys are seeing the first few interviews. I assume
- 0:13Speaker 3: that's how we're gonna drop them.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Yeah, but this one last.
- 0:16Speaker 4: Battle the Boys Spring game champions.
- 0:19Speaker 2: That one hurts too, Maroon hurts. I'll tell you.
- 0:24Speaker 1: I'm never won in ASU Stadium. I've never won in
- 0:26Speaker 1: Sun Devil Stadium ever. I have a high state championship
- 0:30Speaker 1: dummy thirty eight to zero Buffalo Wilwing's Bowl dub me
- 0:33Speaker 1: like forty four to thirteen against Kansas State. But this
- 0:36Speaker 1: one hurts the most. A state championship and a bowl game,
- 0:39Speaker 1: and this one hurts the most. Go back to Arizona
- 0:42Speaker 1: where I'm from. Shaptown Coach Dillhan goes to Chaptown. Charlie
- 0:47Speaker 1: Rago's my head coach, and it's like, I legit thought
- 0:50Speaker 1: you guys were gonna really make.
- 0:51Speaker 2: It so I could win. Yeah, where about character?
- 0:55Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 0:55Speaker 3: I needed to win the other day, I lost this
- 0:57Speaker 3: quarterback challenge and like you can just tell, Taylor and
- 0:59Speaker 3: I low key are super competitive against each.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Other, worried about that quarterback challenge.
- 1:05Speaker 3: I do have that, Yeah, you do have that, and
- 1:07Speaker 3: low key when we put the headsets on everything. I'm
- 1:09Speaker 3: just telling the boys like, hey, we gotta win this
- 1:11Speaker 3: fucking game.
- 1:12Speaker 4: You guys understand that, right, I've.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Been catching too many w's, dude, I feel like l
- 1:16Speaker 2: was in my future. I'd take one.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Yeah, what was it?
- 1:19Speaker 3: At the end seventeen fifteen and they're fucking I'm kneeling
- 1:22Speaker 3: at the coordinator.
- 1:23Speaker 4: I'm like, no, we're not taking a knee. We're running
- 1:24Speaker 4: the ball.
- 1:25Speaker 3: He's like my boss. He's like, my boss said, we're
- 1:29Speaker 3: taking a knee.
- 1:29Speaker 4: And so I run up the middle the field.
- 1:31Speaker 3: I'm like, hey, we want to score, and he's like,
- 1:32Speaker 3: go ahead, go score. Like what do you want to do?
- 1:35Speaker 3: And the guy was like in the knee formation or
- 1:36Speaker 3: victory formation. I'm like, score, just run a plane and
- 1:39Speaker 3: score and he's.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Like, hey, I'll throw you a fade.
- 1:42Speaker 4: No, now that happened, I.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Know because as soon as we new Year's an a
- 1:45Speaker 1: knee and I really thought to myself, was gonna go
- 1:47Speaker 1: try to run this thing up because it was in
- 1:48Speaker 1: the red with.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Our day ardline I know. I was like, no, wait
- 1:54Speaker 2: a minute, we're not taking a knee. We gotta run
- 1:56Speaker 2: this thing up. He caught it too, dude, he did
- 1:59Speaker 2: catch it.
- 1:59Speaker 4: I was gonna call the ice bath.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Oh is that?
- 2:01Speaker 3: I thought that was sweat? I thought that was the
- 2:04Speaker 3: start of a coaching career one and.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Oh I would not be a good coach. I found
- 2:08Speaker 1: that out today. Your coaches trying to take over for me,
- 2:11Speaker 1: Like maybe you called the place about yeah, let me
- 2:13Speaker 1: get this play and they call one, and then all
- 2:14Speaker 1: of a sudden they start calling the place. I'm like, hey, hey,
- 2:16Speaker 1: what's the play?
- 2:18Speaker 2: And the coach wouldn't listen to me.
- 2:19Speaker 1: He would just be like, say, I probably called two plays.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Yeah, that was probably why they didn't win. I mean,
- 2:24Speaker 2: to be honest, if they were to have listened to you,
- 2:26Speaker 2: I mean like that, I like this sound.
- 2:28Speaker 1: That's a good way for me to spend it. It's
- 2:29Speaker 1: a good way for me to spend it. But hey,
- 2:31Speaker 1: we're in Tempe, your home. You grew up here, You've
- 2:34Speaker 1: been in so many prestigious programs. We were talking about
- 2:36Speaker 1: this a little bit before we came on camera. Is
- 2:40Speaker 1: historically rich traditions at Florida State Oregon, Auburn and you
- 2:43Speaker 1: come here and let's called spat a spade.
- 2:45Speaker 2: It's not.
- 2:46Speaker 1: And so how do you compete with those other colleges
- 2:50Speaker 1: that have all that history and tradition to say, hey,
- 2:52Speaker 1: come here.
- 2:52Speaker 5: Well, I think you just look at it and tradition
- 2:55Speaker 5: is just something that happened in the past.
- 2:57Speaker 2: There's no effect in the future.
- 2:58Speaker 5: Right, But what happens is social media nowadays drives where
- 3:01Speaker 5: kids believe they can go to school. So I believe
- 3:04Speaker 5: I can only go to a school that ESPN tells
- 3:07Speaker 5: me is of an elite status, and they choose those schools.
- 3:12Speaker 2: We're in reality.
- 3:13Speaker 5: If twenty five of the best players just choose to
- 3:15Speaker 5: come here three years in a row, our roster would
- 3:19Speaker 5: be top five in the country.
- 3:20Speaker 2: It's very very simple.
- 3:21Speaker 5: So people need to stop living in this bubble that
- 3:23Speaker 5: only certain places can win and come to a place
- 3:26Speaker 5: that it's seventy degrees in April, sixty degrees in June. Right,
- 3:31Speaker 5: they bring the Super Bowl here, they bring the waste
- 3:33Speaker 5: management open, they bring tons of concerts for tired athletes
- 3:36Speaker 5: to move here. Right, why would you not live here
- 3:38Speaker 5: in a place that's the fifth largest market in the country.
- 3:41Speaker 5: We have a player who has his own podcast. Right,
- 3:43Speaker 5: why would you not choose to come here? Right, just
- 3:47Speaker 5: because we may not have a tradition in nineteen ninety six, Right,
- 3:52Speaker 5: that's so short minded. We're trying to teach people, Right,
- 3:55Speaker 5: we can be the tradition. Come here and be the
- 3:57Speaker 5: tradition twenty years from now.
- 3:59Speaker 4: How do you say home on that?
- 4:00Speaker 3: When you walk around and obviously your facilities, Like we
- 4:03Speaker 3: talk about tradition everything else, but even facility wise and
- 4:06Speaker 3: walking around, you can just tell that money isn't poured
- 4:09Speaker 3: into this place yet.
- 4:10Speaker 2: No question. And you know the places I've been this
- 4:13Speaker 2: is there's some spots I have.
- 4:14Speaker 5: This is actually probably the middle of the road facilities
- 4:18Speaker 5: of the places I've been at shocking enough.
- 4:20Speaker 2: It's not Oregon, right, And no places Oregon think anybody's
- 4:23Speaker 2: organ Yeah, back Nebraska.
- 4:25Speaker 5: The support here from the community and from the city
- 4:29Speaker 5: is there. We have the ability financially to compete because
- 4:32Speaker 5: we have the fifth large most pulitinera in the country.
- 4:34Speaker 5: We just got to get everybody back involved.
- 4:37Speaker 2: In college sports.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Yeah, how do you do that? Yeah?
- 4:41Speaker 2: Yeah? Well if by winning games right and stuff? We
- 4:43Speaker 2: did today you guys.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, what got you onto that.
- 4:46Speaker 3: I feel like that was like, you know, I want
- 4:48Speaker 3: to say innovative, but also I don't want to say
- 4:50Speaker 3: innovative because it was us, Like what puts you on
- 4:53Speaker 3: the trail to do something like that? Because we were
- 4:55Speaker 3: promoting like, Hey, where do you guys want us to go?
- 4:57Speaker 3: And then all of a sudden, you just without a shadow,
- 4:59Speaker 3: like without any questioning, like, hey, we want you guys
- 5:02Speaker 3: to come here, and like coaches spring game, we want
- 5:04Speaker 3: to build it around you guys. Because I feel like
- 5:06Speaker 3: the majority of that coaches wouldn't wouldn't do something like that.
- 5:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:09Speaker 5: One, I don't need to be the star of the show.
- 5:11Speaker 5: I actually would rather be in the background. Right, so
- 5:13Speaker 5: it's great for me.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Two.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Right, what are the schools did you guys go to?
- 5:18Speaker 2: We went to l s U. We went to South Carolina,
- 5:20Speaker 2: Ohio State Texas?
- 5:24Speaker 4: What was the other one?
- 5:24Speaker 2: Really?
- 5:27Speaker 5: Go to Boulder and then where and then here here?
- 5:31Speaker 2: All five of those have something in common, right, tradition
- 5:34Speaker 2: except for.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Right.
- 5:37Speaker 5: So we have to be creative and innovative to get
- 5:39Speaker 5: our brand out, to change the narrative. Here, you guys
- 5:42Speaker 5: were the creativity and the innovation, and your guys is
- 5:45Speaker 5: following in just who you guys are as people to
- 5:49Speaker 5: create a culture here that we can change it and
- 5:52Speaker 5: get those players necessary to be one of these teams
- 5:54Speaker 5: that I want to build this program into.
- 5:57Speaker 1: When you're looking at this this town being it's a
- 6:00Speaker 1: pro football town, how do you get people to transition
- 6:03Speaker 1: from pro football into college football?
- 6:06Speaker 5: I don't think you'll transition people. I think you got
- 6:08Speaker 5: to teach. I think there's enough room for both. I
- 6:10Speaker 5: think not everybody's going to be able to go to
- 6:12Speaker 5: a Cardinals game on a Sunday, right, But I do
- 6:15Speaker 5: think there's enough people that if you can't go to
- 6:17Speaker 5: a Cardinals game on a Sunday, can come to an
- 6:18Speaker 5: ASU game on a Saturday.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:20Speaker 5: I think there's enough people in this city that we
- 6:22Speaker 5: can have both. And people forget ASU was here first
- 6:26Speaker 5: thirty years ago, the Jake Plumber era. There was actually
- 6:29Speaker 5: these plays. All the games sold out seven years ago,
- 6:32Speaker 5: all the games sold out, right. This town just likes
- 6:35Speaker 5: winners because there's so many options. Whichever team's winning is
- 6:38Speaker 5: what they choose, right. So we've got to put a
- 6:40Speaker 5: product on the field that produces winning, and if we
- 6:43Speaker 5: do that, the fans will come the recruits will see it,
- 6:46Speaker 5: and then the tradition happens and the rest is history.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I mean, what was Clemson twenty years ago?
- 6:51Speaker 5: Clemson had one a ten win game in twenty season,
- 6:54Speaker 5: all of a sudden, the culture changed. Coach Sweeney did
- 6:57Speaker 5: a phenomenal job. Now they're blue blood. Why can't that
- 7:00Speaker 5: happen here?
- 7:01Speaker 4: That's true, that's fair.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Well as far as for coaching, like finding your process here,
- 7:06Speaker 1: your senior year at Chaparral, you get hurt, you're dealing
- 7:09Speaker 1: with that, you're trying to think of. Regel was talking
- 7:10Speaker 1: about you were going to come here, become a lawyer
- 7:12Speaker 1: like your dad and kind of keep moving forward. What
- 7:15Speaker 1: made you pivot into becoming a football coach?
- 7:18Speaker 5: Yeah, Coach Regel grabbed me and said, hey, you should
- 7:20Speaker 5: just try this out.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Start coaching.
- 7:22Speaker 5: And I started coaching, and I just love the impact
- 7:24Speaker 5: you could make on people. I love people, I love
- 7:27Speaker 5: being around people. I'm a people person. Right, all these
- 7:30Speaker 5: excess and the o's people think they matter, and they do.
- 7:32Speaker 5: You have to know what you're doing. But what wins
- 7:34Speaker 5: is can you get people to come together and can
- 7:37Speaker 5: you motivate people to do more than they normally would
- 7:40Speaker 5: that's what wins all the other stuff sounds fun, right, Yeah,
- 7:43Speaker 5: we're gonna run power versus weak rotation, whatever that is.
- 7:46Speaker 5: That's everybody could do that. I could teach my wife, right,
- 7:48Speaker 5: what good play calls are?
- 7:50Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:50Speaker 5: I wanted a coach because I love seeing that click
- 7:53Speaker 5: for a player. I loved it when a player, maybe
- 7:56Speaker 5: off the field or on the field, in the classroom,
- 7:59Speaker 5: he couldn't get some thing or he didn't know how
- 8:01Speaker 5: to be successful, and then it clicked.
- 8:03Speaker 2: And once it clicks, it clicks, then you know you
- 8:05Speaker 2: know how to manage.
- 8:05Speaker 5: It, whether that's your life and your work life balance,
- 8:08Speaker 5: and all of a sudden they're like, hey, you've got
- 8:09Speaker 5: to find balance here. You're not balanced yet, you're not
- 8:12Speaker 5: gonna be successful. Then all of a sudden it clicks.
- 8:14Speaker 5: Like I love I'm addicted to that click.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Yeah, when you have a guy like Charlie Rigl who
- 8:20Speaker 1: got you into coaching football and now you employed him.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Essentially you snagged Hi from Idaho State and you're like, hey,
- 8:25Speaker 1: come down to ASU when he was a head coach, Like,
- 8:27Speaker 1: what is that relationship like now when at one point
- 8:30Speaker 1: he was your superior?
- 8:31Speaker 5: Notes flipped Yeah, I mean it's just the guy I
- 8:33Speaker 5: lean on to ask questions too, like is this stupid?
- 8:36Speaker 2: Yeah, like we have a dance off in the middle.
- 8:38Speaker 5: Of a scrimmage or scrimmage three, we paused for a
- 8:41Speaker 5: dance off, and I'm like, is this stupid? Like I
- 8:44Speaker 5: want to do it right, but is it stupid? Like
- 8:46Speaker 5: should we be doing this? We bring a basketball hoop
- 8:48Speaker 5: out to the third practice and the mind of the
- 8:50Speaker 5: practice we have a shootout. I'm like, is this like,
- 8:54Speaker 5: so I just bounce ideas off a ham like I
- 8:56Speaker 5: wanted to run one on ones in the middle of
- 8:57Speaker 5: a practice like one v one ball. He's like, any
- 9:02Speaker 5: they're in cleats. They're not used to the movements and cleats.
- 9:04Speaker 5: That would be stupid shootout. So he's kind of the
- 9:07Speaker 5: person that tones me down because I'm the guy that
- 9:10Speaker 5: wants to go one hundred miles per hour all the
- 9:12Speaker 5: time and everything.
- 9:13Speaker 1: It's pretty terrifying that guy like Charlier Regal has to
- 9:15Speaker 1: be the one to say, hey, when we were sitting here,
- 9:18Speaker 1: he was saying earlier he's their fifth gearriers in part,
- 9:21Speaker 1: so that's.
- 9:22Speaker 4: He does the speed. He's the speech guy in me.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Oh, he is incredible. Speeches are all time. Brother, I
- 9:27Speaker 2: was trying to tell you. I remember the one about
- 9:29Speaker 2: the dog through the ball and the dog kept running
- 9:33Speaker 2: and then through it again. The dog kept running. The
- 9:35Speaker 2: dog never came back because he wanted that ball. He
- 9:38Speaker 2: want to run through a fucking wall when he does that.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Dude, you when you're when you're looking at this program
- 9:44Speaker 1: and you guys are expected yours are predicted to win
- 9:46Speaker 1: four games this year, how do you think going into
- 9:50Speaker 1: this season with the development you've seen from spring ball,
- 9:52Speaker 1: how do you see the season going for you guys?
- 9:54Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean I think our players.
- 9:56Speaker 5: I haven't even talked about that because I think our
- 9:59Speaker 5: guy are invested like I think our guys.
- 10:02Speaker 2: You heard Jalen.
- 10:03Speaker 5: Said earlier what his expectations are, right, not even close
- 10:07Speaker 5: to the same, because I don't think people understand or
- 10:10Speaker 5: how much our team grew together. People look at forty
- 10:13Speaker 5: five new kids, forty five old kids that are all
- 10:15Speaker 5: probably selfish is what people think, right, Kids that just
- 10:18Speaker 5: came here to get theirs, that's why you transferred to
- 10:20Speaker 5: get yours.
- 10:21Speaker 2: And what they fail to see is the community.
- 10:24Speaker 5: Like you guys mentioned an off air that our kids
- 10:26Speaker 5: are together like our kids, it's different, Like there is
- 10:29Speaker 5: a they're building a culture here for each other, and
- 10:32Speaker 5: I think that's the secret sauce to winning in college.
- 10:35Speaker 5: Look at Kansas State right, look at Utah right, look
- 10:39Speaker 5: at the teams that win, right, it's the culture that wins.
- 10:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Uh, And you can tell too, Like when the kids
- 10:45Speaker 3: were on here talking and doing their interview, they also
- 10:47Speaker 3: alluded to you being excited, like this was your dream job.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Can you talk about like why ASU is your dream job?
- 10:54Speaker 3: And if you you know, if you're saying that and
- 10:58Speaker 3: not planning on going anywhere else, speak a little bit
- 11:01Speaker 3: on that.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:02Speaker 5: So obviously I'm born and raised here. I grew up
- 11:05Speaker 5: going to games. You know, my family moved out here,
- 11:09Speaker 5: my parents when they were you know, fifty years ago.
- 11:11Speaker 2: My wife's born and raised here. We were neighbors in
- 11:13Speaker 2: high school.
- 11:14Speaker 5: So I grew up rooting for Arizona State, and then
- 11:18Speaker 5: I coached high school ball here. Right then I coached
- 11:21Speaker 5: college ball here, and then I moved around the country.
- 11:24Speaker 5: But this is always home. So home is home, Like
- 11:27Speaker 5: there's nothing like being home. Like you talk about ultra motivation,
- 11:31Speaker 5: Like I used to clean up dog crap at Chaparral
- 11:34Speaker 5: Park that was my job when I coached, I.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Drive by Chaparral Park on my way to work.
- 11:39Speaker 5: So when you talk about all those things that add up,
- 11:42Speaker 5: and then with my families here, I believe this place
- 11:45Speaker 5: can win championships. I believe the city, what it's growing to,
- 11:48Speaker 5: what it can become. All we have to do is
- 11:50Speaker 5: teach kids it's okay to come here. That's it, because
- 11:53Speaker 5: if you showed.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Up here, you're gonna be like, dang, I want to
- 11:56Speaker 2: live there.
- 11:56Speaker 5: That's not a debate. You just got to teach people
- 11:59Speaker 5: it's okay, hey, to come here. That's it. It's okay.
- 12:02Speaker 5: Don't listen to the media. Come here, live the life
- 12:06Speaker 5: you want to live. Live the life retired professional athletes
- 12:08Speaker 5: live in Chandler. Right, and let's go do something special.
- 12:13Speaker 2: You say, like.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Jason, Yeah, what as you're used too? Is I tell
- 12:17Speaker 1: them it's okay to come here. Why do you think
- 12:19Speaker 1: ASU has that stigma of being like, hey, if you're
- 12:22Speaker 1: if you're a five star guy, unless you're like, grew
- 12:24Speaker 1: up an ASU fan, don't come here.
- 12:27Speaker 5: I think the media chooses what's okay and where's okay
- 12:31Speaker 5: for people to go to. I think when you watch TV,
- 12:34Speaker 5: when you look at Twitter, they tell you, they tell
- 12:37Speaker 5: these five and four stars, you can only go to blank.
- 12:43Speaker 5: You're too good for blank, right, That program's not good
- 12:47Speaker 5: enough in history for you.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Why like why like that doesn't make any sense to me.
- 12:55Speaker 5: But it's the narrative that these kids here all the
- 12:57Speaker 5: time is you're too good for this, you're too good
- 13:00Speaker 5: for this, right, when in reality they should be finding
- 13:03Speaker 5: where they want to live, right, and what people they trust.
- 13:08Speaker 2: That's it.
- 13:08Speaker 5: And if you get twenty five elite players living where
- 13:11Speaker 5: they want to live with coaches they trust, that's an
- 13:15Speaker 5: elite team.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Just like that.
- 13:16Speaker 5: It's a very very simple process. But you've got to
- 13:20Speaker 5: you've got to break the narrative.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Yeah, when you're as a head coach, being such a
- 13:25Speaker 1: young head coach, what do you attribute your success to
- 13:28Speaker 1: at such a young age, Because there's a lot of
- 13:30Speaker 1: coaches out there that are in their fifty sixties that
- 13:32Speaker 1: have never sniffed a head coaching job. How did you
- 13:34Speaker 1: get to this point at such an early age in
- 13:36Speaker 1: your life?
- 13:36Speaker 5: Yeah, I would say I have a bad I'm very
- 13:39Speaker 5: bad at not being honest. So everybody thinks, oh, young
- 13:43Speaker 5: energy players coach, Right, that's what the players think players coach, right,
- 13:48Speaker 5: But I'm also the dude that tells you what you
- 13:51Speaker 5: don't want to hear.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Like I have no problem saying you can't play here.
- 13:54Speaker 5: Yeah, you know how to make it. You're not You're
- 13:56Speaker 5: not gonna play for us. I have no problem saying
- 13:59Speaker 5: that was laziest like. That doesn't bother me. That's just
- 14:02Speaker 5: how I was raised. So I think the combination of
- 14:05Speaker 5: my youth and understanding that kids haven't changed. Right. People
- 14:09Speaker 5: say kids have changed, kids have changed, just like the narrative, right,
- 14:12Speaker 5: all these new kids are different.
- 14:14Speaker 2: No, they haven't. Right.
- 14:15Speaker 5: Adults have lowered the bar because they think kids can't
- 14:19Speaker 5: hit the old standard, so they just lower the bar,
- 14:21Speaker 5: lower the bar, lower the bar, lower the bar, and
- 14:23Speaker 5: then you hit the bar. No, you can hit the
- 14:26Speaker 5: bar that's always been set, just do it in different ways.
- 14:29Speaker 5: Kids like social media out. Don't hide from it. We
- 14:32Speaker 5: have people saying, oh, social media is the devil.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Hide from it. No, embrace it.
- 14:36Speaker 5: Show them all their tweets of people calling them the
- 14:38Speaker 5: worst player on.
- 14:39Speaker 2: The planet, so they get used to it.
- 14:40Speaker 5: Don't tell them, don't look at it, because they're gonna
- 14:43Speaker 5: like you have to embrace the new age that we
- 14:45Speaker 5: are in right, and then find a way to hit
- 14:48Speaker 5: the same high bar in a new era. And I
- 14:50Speaker 5: feel like I've been able to find a balance. And
- 14:53Speaker 5: then I genuinely care about people like I have relationships.
- 14:55Speaker 5: I have a group chats with all my former quarterbacks.
- 14:57Speaker 5: I think they can feel that. So all those three
- 14:59Speaker 5: things can.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Have you gone.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Sorry, I was just gonna say, where do you feel
- 15:02Speaker 3: like you've picked up on those things overtime and over
- 15:05Speaker 3: your career, Like what philosophies or what things have you read?
- 15:07Speaker 3: What things have helped kind of cultivate that mindset about it?
- 15:10Speaker 5: I think one, I mean coach Regel. I mean he's
- 15:11Speaker 5: a guy who cared about his players. I mean he
- 15:14Speaker 5: would do anything for his players, but he coached them
- 15:16Speaker 5: hard right. He was passionate, like he brought it every
- 15:19Speaker 5: single day. So getting to c under him at a
- 15:21Speaker 5: young age. We had another guy from a football standpoint,
- 15:24Speaker 5: Conrad Hamilton, right, who was an unbelievable defensive coach. Right
- 15:28Speaker 5: also coach of Chaparral yep, also a coach of Chaparral. Yeah,
- 15:31Speaker 5: we had a squad, dude, We'll get on that later,
- 15:34Speaker 5: but we had we had a squad right, it was
- 15:35Speaker 5: probably the goat squad of all time in the history
- 15:38Speaker 5: of high school football.
- 15:39Speaker 2: But that's just my personal opinion.
- 15:42Speaker 5: But I combine that with guys like Mike Norvel, and
- 15:45Speaker 5: I think I've learned more what to do, but I've
- 15:48Speaker 5: learned more what I wouldn't do along the way, Like hey,
- 15:53Speaker 5: I love this, but I don't like this, And I've
- 15:56Speaker 5: just kind of marked off all the things I wouldn't
- 15:59Speaker 5: want to do as a head coach because at the
- 16:02Speaker 5: end of the day, people know fake. That's one thing
- 16:05Speaker 5: I firmly believe people know fake people know real people
- 16:08Speaker 5: know if a head coach walked in. If I walked
- 16:10Speaker 5: in and gave a speech like Charlie Ragel and say
- 16:12Speaker 5: we're gonna chase the dog, I'd be laughed out the roof.
- 16:14Speaker 5: I'm five nine, I'm an athletic, like I'm the goofball.
- 16:18Speaker 5: I got no chance to give that speech. If I
- 16:20Speaker 5: give that speech, I'm a fraud. I have to play
- 16:22Speaker 5: into me as a head coach. The culture is gonna
- 16:26Speaker 5: be what I am because if you're not, people feed
- 16:29Speaker 5: off of it, and they know your full crapy.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Phenomenal energy.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Phenomenal energy when you're talking about kids looking at Twitter
- 16:35Speaker 1: and you're like, go ahead and look at the negative comments.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Have you ever showed players. Have you ever gone into
- 16:40Speaker 2: a team meeting room and been like, hey, they're saying
- 16:42Speaker 2: this about you.
- 16:43Speaker 5: Not yet, but we have showed what they retweet in Like,
- 16:47Speaker 5: So I do just from like, hey, I just scroll
- 16:50Speaker 5: and this is what you like. So if somebody is
- 16:53Speaker 5: trying to draft you or hire you for a job
- 16:55Speaker 5: and they look at your Twitter, this is you, bud,
- 16:58Speaker 5: just know.
- 16:58Speaker 2: That dark So that's hilarious exactly. So I do some
- 17:02Speaker 2: or all the.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Positive ego feeling shit that they get tweeted at and
- 17:06Speaker 3: they like or retweeting stuff, and it's like, hey, you
- 17:08Speaker 3: know the whole quote Lifford the Cheers died by the Booze.
- 17:10Speaker 3: It's like, you know, the moment people say bad stuff
- 17:13Speaker 3: about you, you're gonna we know, you're gonna be looking
- 17:15Speaker 3: and feeding into that because you get so hyped to
- 17:17Speaker 3: like and retweet and engage with everybody who you want
- 17:19Speaker 3: to see, Oh look what's so and so said about me?
- 17:21Speaker 2: Correct?
- 17:22Speaker 5: I mean there was a year in years past, just
- 17:23Speaker 5: as an example, I pulled up my name for my
- 17:27Speaker 5: team and scrawled at all the hate.
- 17:30Speaker 2: So they can see.
- 17:30Speaker 5: Look, this is what people say about me calling reverse
- 17:33Speaker 5: on the minus ten. That was a TfL fumble. Probably
- 17:37Speaker 5: not a great call, right, Look, people hate me definitely.
- 17:40Speaker 2: But horrible call.
- 17:41Speaker 5: We were the number two offense in the country, right,
- 17:43Speaker 5: So they loved me, loved me, loved me. Hate hate hate,
- 17:46Speaker 5: hate hate, And the whole goal is like you should
- 17:49Speaker 5: love the process to get better. And the best players
- 17:52Speaker 5: I've ever been around loved like the football, like they
- 17:58Speaker 5: found a way even if they didn't love ball, they
- 17:59Speaker 5: found a way to fall in love with being there,
- 18:01Speaker 5: even if football wasn't their passion. They found a way
- 18:04Speaker 5: to compete one on one and talk crap enough that
- 18:06Speaker 5: they found a way to compete. So it's can you
- 18:09Speaker 5: block all that out look at it, because you're gonna
- 18:11Speaker 5: look at it. You can't hide from it anymore. Let's
- 18:14Speaker 5: embrace it. But then keep the main thing the main thing.
- 18:16Speaker 5: Laugh at it like, yeah, you're probably right and you
- 18:19Speaker 5: should have cut that ball. I agree with them, Yeah
- 18:21Speaker 5: you should, you know, but you don't. Don't take it
- 18:23Speaker 5: as a negative. Take it as a laugh like joke
- 18:26Speaker 5: about it.
- 18:27Speaker 1: When you're going through recruiting process of Arizona. How do
- 18:30Speaker 1: you get guys, what's your selling point on ASU over
- 18:33Speaker 1: something like you of A or anywhere else in the
- 18:35Speaker 1: PAC twelve.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Well, I think for us specific one, we don't recruit
- 18:38Speaker 2: for U of A.
- 18:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Uh, that's just that's a no brainer. You come here.
- 18:42Speaker 2: That's a no brainer to come here. Oh, like they
- 18:45Speaker 2: just ain't. Yeah, that's a no brainer to come here.
- 18:47Speaker 2: You should come here.
- 18:47Speaker 4: Yeah, that's not a debate.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm and I'm gonna hate that Mark. We gotta
- 18:53Speaker 2: clip that from and I'm gonna and I'm gonna be here.
- 18:56Speaker 5: There's I mean, you're you're choosing a U of A
- 18:58Speaker 5: or a SHU with a guy who's passion about actually
- 18:59Speaker 5: being here forever. Yeah, it's not a debate because you
- 19:02Speaker 5: know you're gonna Jeed Fish. He's a really good football coach.
- 19:05Speaker 5: He's a really good football really good football coach. You
- 19:07Speaker 5: guys have got in a fight, who do you think
- 19:08Speaker 5: would win?
- 19:08Speaker 2: Oh? I would win? Yeah, Oh yeah I would win. Yeah.
- 19:11Speaker 5: I'm thirty two and I am fiery. Yeah I will
- 19:14Speaker 5: bite ankles. Did just say you're unathletic, and goofy, I'm unathletic,
- 19:18Speaker 5: But I'm fiery, and you could hit me over and
- 19:20Speaker 5: over again.
- 19:20Speaker 2: I'm probably I'm gonna go all day.
- 19:22Speaker 4: You'll be like that dog.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna be like the dog. Yes, you're gonna
- 19:25Speaker 2: have to.
- 19:25Speaker 4: Kill the dogs.
- 19:26Speaker 2: You're gonna have kill me.
- 19:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:27Speaker 2: I don't like to.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Lose anybody in the Pac twelve that you think could
- 19:30Speaker 3: whoop your.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Ass we go through this. Uh, I mean, I don't know.
- 19:39Speaker 2: I mean I would.
- 19:40Speaker 5: I mean, to be honest, you would think, you know,
- 19:42Speaker 5: and I mean he's a professional athlete that's being.
- 19:44Speaker 4: Real losses toes.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Yeah, so you don't know how that kind of hitted.
- 19:47Speaker 2: I don't know, but I would just think.
- 19:49Speaker 5: I mean I think he just benched like two twenty
- 19:50Speaker 5: five twenty times or something.
- 19:51Speaker 2: I don't know, you really do that.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I was pretty impressed with bench Yeah, yeah, I
- 19:55Speaker 1: mean he's always been talking about that.
- 19:57Speaker 4: He's always been a bench press cat.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Sometimes you do videos after he gets done hit the
- 20:00Speaker 3: bench press, drop some wisdom on, you, drop some philosophy on.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Yeah, that's awesome. So you know one's beating you except
- 20:07Speaker 1: for Dan maybe.
- 20:08Speaker 5: Yeah, maybe I don't I don't know. I'd have to
- 20:10Speaker 5: Kyle Whittingham is the way his team plays. I don't
- 20:13Speaker 5: know any of these guys yet, but the way his
- 20:15Speaker 5: team places, I wouldn't want to get in to steal
- 20:16Speaker 5: cage with them. You're usually a reflection of your coach,
- 20:19Speaker 5: how physical and tough you are as a football team.
- 20:22Speaker 5: So the way his team plays, I wouldn't want to
- 20:24Speaker 5: get in a ring with him.
- 20:25Speaker 2: This guy's play hard. Has the NFL ever been something
- 20:28Speaker 2: that you've thought about? Not really.
- 20:30Speaker 5: I like the I like make an impact on kids.
- 20:32Speaker 5: I like seeing kids like a switch. Yeah, it's not
- 20:36Speaker 5: as much about the football as it is about the people.
- 20:40Speaker 4: Do you think you would ever dabble in the NFL? No,
- 20:43Speaker 4: you say not really.
- 20:44Speaker 3: It's like, what if you have great success at Arizona State,
- 20:48Speaker 3: which let's just say within five years, you put a
- 20:51Speaker 3: couple of years together, and then the NFL starts to
- 20:53Speaker 3: poke their head in on like, hey, let's get you
- 20:54Speaker 3: up to the big leagues.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Yeah I want to be here and throwing a bag
- 20:58Speaker 2: at you, yeah I want to be here.
- 21:00Speaker 5: I mean, at the end of the day, I always
- 21:01Speaker 5: tell people, like, there's a certain amount of money to
- 21:04Speaker 5: make you comfortable, right, I am way in that number.
- 21:08Speaker 5: Then there's a certain amount of money. That's just what
- 21:09Speaker 5: are you gonna do with it?
- 21:11Speaker 4: Right?
- 21:12Speaker 2: I mean here, I'm way beyond comfortable.
- 21:15Speaker 5: So at this point, like I am very very happy,
- 21:19Speaker 5: and I plan on being here, Like I want to
- 21:21Speaker 5: build this, right, I want to build this for the
- 21:23Speaker 5: long haul. That's why we're not cutting corners. I mean
- 21:26Speaker 5: especially culturally, like we're not we're not cutting corners culturally, building.
- 21:30Speaker 2: This the right way.
- 21:31Speaker 4: What fires me up?
- 21:32Speaker 3: And you can ask you a question, but I was
- 21:33Speaker 3: just gonna chime in and say, what fires me up
- 21:35Speaker 3: is that I believe all the stuff he's saying. And
- 21:38Speaker 3: we were, we were a part of year one.
- 21:42Speaker 2: That is a good point five years though. You will
- 21:46Speaker 2: get a call from us, you know, this will be on.
- 21:49Speaker 3: Yeahs come here in the fall for a game like
- 21:53Speaker 3: a tailgate or something like that.
- 21:54Speaker 1: That'd be fun anytime in come Arizona.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Well, you guys will be on the raiders, so you'll
- 21:59Speaker 2: just be able to drive down right.
- 22:01Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:01Speaker 2: There, we do have rules. We have to play together this.
- 22:04Speaker 4: Yeah, we are.
- 22:07Speaker 1: When you start winning here and the money starts coming
- 22:09Speaker 1: into ASU to really beef up this facility. Where's the
- 22:12Speaker 1: first place you're attacking?
- 22:14Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I want to get an indoor right behind.
- 22:17Speaker 5: We have a bubble over on the other side. I
- 22:19Speaker 5: want to get an indoor in the fields moved over here,
- 22:21Speaker 5: which is already part of our plans. Uh, but obviously
- 22:24Speaker 5: that's good you put it. We're going to take out
- 22:26Speaker 5: some of the parking behind yeah, behind this, and we'll
- 22:28Speaker 5: put an indoor right here, taking out that building, and
- 22:30Speaker 5: then two fields back there.
- 22:31Speaker 2: So everything's kind of yep, everything's right here, So that
- 22:34Speaker 2: that's that's step one.
- 22:36Speaker 5: But my first step in terms of fundraising and money
- 22:39Speaker 5: is fundraising for our players and INNIL. Everything I do
- 22:41Speaker 5: right now is for our players. They said they wanted
- 22:43Speaker 5: better food, got in better food. They said they wanted
- 22:46Speaker 5: better snacks. Got the better snacks. Right, you guys ate
- 22:49Speaker 5: the food today, it's pretty good, right. Uh. They said
- 22:52Speaker 5: they need an i L. They haven't had it. I
- 22:54Speaker 5: have fundraised almost every night for an IL. Like every
- 22:56Speaker 5: decision we make is players. And if you keep that
- 23:00Speaker 5: the main thing that players win. That means everything you
- 23:03Speaker 5: should spend money on should affect the who the players.
- 23:07Speaker 5: So I asked them what do they want? Like, what
- 23:09Speaker 5: do you guys want?
- 23:10Speaker 2: You want this? You want this?
- 23:11Speaker 5: You want this because that's who you're trying to get
- 23:14Speaker 5: to play at the best of their ability, and that's
- 23:15Speaker 5: how you get buy.
- 23:16Speaker 2: In with ni L.
- 23:18Speaker 1: How do you attack that because you're you're basically always
- 23:21Speaker 1: playing free agency? Now, how do you there's a phrase
- 23:23Speaker 1: is about the start right now and aday, how do
- 23:27Speaker 1: you go about attacking that?
- 23:29Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 23:29Speaker 5: One for us, I tell people, if you don't want
- 23:31Speaker 5: to be here, leave because I firmly believe culture wins.
- 23:35Speaker 5: So it's you want to be here, leave, that's fine.
- 23:38Speaker 5: I really don't care, like go. I don't care if
- 23:41Speaker 5: our three best players into the portal. I wouldn't want it,
- 23:43Speaker 5: and I don't believe that's gonna happen because we've built
- 23:45Speaker 5: a good culture here. But I wouldn't beg them to
- 23:47Speaker 5: stay because that's how you build a bad culture. Right.
- 23:50Speaker 5: And on top of that, I tell everybody my job
- 23:52Speaker 5: is to bring in somebody to beat you out. Yeah,
- 23:55Speaker 5: because that's the best for the team. So it may
- 23:57Speaker 5: hurt your feelings if I bring in four players and
- 24:01Speaker 5: they beat out four starters, but guess what, there's another
- 24:04Speaker 5: eighty five guys who are on a better team. So
- 24:06Speaker 5: don't be selfish When I make this team better, and
- 24:09Speaker 5: I challenge them. I just tell them that there are
- 24:11Speaker 5: no guarantees on this team. Every transfer we took right,
- 24:14Speaker 5: they weren't promised anything. Zero transfers were promised to start.
- 24:17Speaker 5: We're promising I own money were promised anything. It was
- 24:20Speaker 5: coming to your compete win. Same thing with everybody on
- 24:23Speaker 5: our team. It is win and earn your keep.
- 24:28Speaker 4: I feel like we've basically hit all the big one.
- 24:31Speaker 1: I do want to hit what more? You use the
- 24:32Speaker 1: phrase activate the valley? What does that mean?
- 24:35Speaker 5: It just means get everybody involved, Like show up at
- 24:39Speaker 5: the spring game, by season tickets, show up because the
- 24:42Speaker 5: one thing that we're gonna you know, you don't have
- 24:45Speaker 5: that six national titles, right, you don't have the three
- 24:49Speaker 5: national titles that you have to be able to show
- 24:51Speaker 5: recruits as people care. You have to be able to
- 24:54Speaker 5: go to a game in the fall and see a
- 24:56Speaker 5: sold out crowd and see an environment that you want
- 24:58Speaker 5: to play in, because that as a huge effect on prospects.
- 25:02Speaker 5: So if we want to be where we want to
- 25:04Speaker 5: get to, If we want to get to where we
- 25:05Speaker 5: want to get, us a program which is recruit the
- 25:07Speaker 5: best players to come here so we can be the
- 25:09Speaker 5: best team to come here. They need to show up
- 25:11Speaker 5: and see a sold out crowd with butts in seats.
- 25:14Speaker 5: They need to see people active on social media. People
- 25:17Speaker 5: think it's stupid.
- 25:18Speaker 2: No, it's not.
- 25:19Speaker 5: Our recruits love being retweated by our fans. It shows love.
- 25:23Speaker 5: We need everybody in the value to be activated in
- 25:26Speaker 5: the fifth largest valley with one school. All these other
- 25:30Speaker 5: large and all these other large cities don't just have
- 25:33Speaker 5: one school in a one hour radius.
- 25:36Speaker 2: They all have two schools. We're the only one with one.
- 25:40Speaker 5: If everybody can get behind us and get activated financially
- 25:45Speaker 5: with what you can give, and then put your butt
- 25:47Speaker 5: in a seat, show up right, people are going to
- 25:50Speaker 5: realize we care. And if people realize.
- 25:52Speaker 3: We care here, we're gonna be prety dang good, the
- 25:57Speaker 3: right man, the right man for the job here.
- 25:58Speaker 1: I feel like ACU is in at hands, folks. Coach,
- 26:01Speaker 1: we appreciate you coming on today.
- 26:02Speaker 3: Now. If you if you drop, if you don't even
- 26:04Speaker 3: win four games, we might have to come back and
- 26:06Speaker 3: ask about that.
- 26:07Speaker 4: But so far, like, I'm sold.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Who's your first game? Our our first game is that home.
- 26:13Speaker 5: We have four home games, so our first pack twelve
- 26:15Speaker 5: game is USC here week four, so four for USC
- 26:22Speaker 5: at home. We play Oklahoma State week two and then
- 26:25Speaker 5: Fresno State week three. So we've got we've got a
- 26:27Speaker 5: few a few good games here at home to start.
- 26:30Speaker 5: So I'm hoping it's one hundred and flat five all
- 26:33Speaker 5: four of those games.
- 26:34Speaker 2: And I'm hoping we kick off at noon. Oh yes, absolutely,
- 26:37Speaker 2: this has been awesome man.
- 26:38Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 26:39Speaker 2: We appreciate you're rooting for you.
- 26:40Speaker 3: Man.
- 26:40Speaker 2: We really hope every day's coming out.
- 26:42Speaker 5: Uh you know, let's I mean, maybe you'll have to
- 26:44Speaker 5: defend your trophy next year.
- 26:46Speaker 2: Maybe I would sign up for that right now. I
- 26:49Speaker 2: need that.
- 26:51Speaker 1: As you get a little I'm not gonna touch that.
- 26:53Speaker 1: We need a little Will Compton right there on the side.
- 26:55Speaker 4: Put on the side.
- 26:56Speaker 5: Yeah, we almost got you a second place trophy that
- 27:00Speaker 5: was just like a car bar.
- 27:01Speaker 4: That would be so funny.
- 27:01Speaker 3: But your pocket short a key chain or something.
- 27:11Speaker 4: Yeah, this is awesome, man, this awesome.
- 27:14Speaker 2: I feel there should be a punishment for me for losing.
- 27:16Speaker 3: We were bummed because somebody goes because on the pod
- 27:18Speaker 3: we were like, we'll figure out what the bed is,
- 27:20Speaker 3: all right, so what so what what does the loser?
- 27:22Speaker 3: Would the loser have to do or give or anything
- 27:25Speaker 3: like that. It's like, man, we didn't get around and
- 27:26Speaker 3: doing it.
- 27:27Speaker 1: Whatever.
- 27:30Speaker 2: Don't say that, bro, don't say that. I think I
- 27:34Speaker 2: think the loser should have to donate his watch to
- 27:37Speaker 2: a s U N I L. I think that would
- 27:43Speaker 2: be phenomenal. You could figure out something.
- 27:44Speaker 1: I'll tell you what next year, not the watch to
- 27:48Speaker 1: watch Vegas. Yeah yeah, but that's my money.
- 27:55Speaker 2: I'm would have to keep that, keep that that trade alive.
- 27:58Speaker 1: But yes, we will be back, and I think there
- 27:59Speaker 1: should be some sort of n I L that next
- 28:01Speaker 1: year between you and me, loser has to pay a
- 28:03Speaker 1: certain amount.
- 28:04Speaker 3: Yeah, as long as we as long as it alliances
- 28:06Speaker 3: whatever happens this year, like what just happened?
- 28:09Speaker 2: Okay, how much do you want me to pay this?
- 28:10Speaker 4: I don't know this umber?
- 28:12Speaker 1: Next year say a number, but no, next year it's
- 28:14Speaker 1: gonna be the same thing because I'll pay whatever.
- 28:16Speaker 4: You can think about it.
- 28:18Speaker 2: You don't want to say a number right now?
- 28:19Speaker 3: You know, money gets me, Yeah, money gives me the
- 28:24Speaker 3: escalate today. Yeah, reason there was a reason that I
- 28:30Speaker 3: would escalate. You're soft now, you don't got that great people?
- 28:36Speaker 3: You know, we had put the video of me and
- 28:39Speaker 3: the Raft four with that all the way back, the
- 28:41Speaker 3: big case, the big case, oh if there's a Raft four,
- 28:46Speaker 3: and then the escalade. I'm thinking the big case, caring
- 28:49Speaker 3: case for all this equipment would go in to escalate.
- 28:51Speaker 4: Mitch was the one in charge of it. Mitch is
- 28:53Speaker 4: on Team Compton.
- 28:54Speaker 3: The whole thought process was we're gonna be riding in
- 28:57Speaker 3: separate cars, like, now's the time, now is the morning.
- 28:59Speaker 3: We shouldn't be hanging out more. We need to separate.
- 29:01Speaker 3: So I was like, let's separate Team Compton, Team Lawan.
- 29:04Speaker 3: And then I look at this big case and I'm like, hey,
- 29:06Speaker 3: we should get to escalade. I was like, oh, I
- 29:09Speaker 3: see what you're doing. Buckle them in his seat and everything.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Due.
- 29:12Speaker 2: I was hot.
- 29:13Speaker 1: I was hot, But yeah, coach, we appreciate you. If
