- 0:00Dot com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:08podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:14I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to
- 0:17you by the Great News Podcast. Why?
- 0:21Because good news should be heard, and the link is right
- 0:25here in the show notes. Today's quote is widely
- 0:30attributed to Jean Paul Sartre, French philosopher, playwright,
- 0:33Nobel Prize nominee, and one of the most influential thinkers of
- 0:37the 20th century. The exact original source hasn't
- 0:41been 100% verified, but the idea is so deeply consistent with his
- 0:47philosophy and so widely attributed to him that it could
- 0:51hardly belong to anyone else. He is credited with saying only
- 0:58the guy who isn't rowing has time to rock the boat.
- 1:03Picture the boat, a small vessel on open water.
- 1:07Everyone on board has a roll. Rowing, navigating, bailing,
- 1:11contributing. That boat moves because of
- 1:15collective effort. Every person pulling their
- 1:18weight keeps things stable, keeps things moving, keeps
- 1:23everyone safe. Now picture the person in the
- 1:26back, arms folded, not rowing, who has opinions about the
- 1:32direction, complaints about the pace, commentary on everyone
- 1:37else's technique. Satcher's point is devastatingly
- 1:42simple. That person only has time for
- 1:45all of that because they aren't doing the work.
- 1:49This lands hard because we've all met that person.
- 1:53And if we're honest, we've all been that person.
- 1:57It's far easier to critique than to contribute, far easier to
- 2:01identify what's wrong than to put your hands on the oars and
- 2:05help fix it. Criticism requires nothing.
- 2:09Contribution requires everything.
- 2:14Satra's philosophy was built around the concept he called bad
- 2:18faith, the self deception of people who deny their own
- 2:22freedom and responsibility, attributing their inaction to
- 2:26external forces rather than owning their choices.
- 2:31The boat rocker is bad faith made visible.
- 2:35They position themselves as the clear eyed truth teller, the one
- 2:40brave enough to challenge the direction while quietly
- 2:44exempting themselves from the responsibility of actually
- 2:47steering or rowing. In this case, for Satra to live
- 2:54authentically meant turning freedom into action.
- 2:57We are defined not by what we think or say, but by what we do.
- 3:03The rower is defined by their rowing, the critic is defined by
- 3:08their absence from the oars. And no amount of commentary from
- 3:12the back of the boat changes which one you are.
- 3:16There's a useful self check buried in this quote.
- 3:19The next time you find yourself with strong opinions about
- 3:22what's wrong, what you should change, or what others are doing
- 3:27incorrectly, ask honestly, am I rowing?
- 3:32Because if the answer is yes, your perspective is earn and
- 3:37your voice has weight, and if the answer is no, the most
- 3:41powerful thing you can do is pick up an OR.
- 3:46So here's the question, and it's a simple but uncomfortable one.
- 3:50In the areas of your life where you have the most opinions and
- 3:55the loudest voice, are you rowing?
- 3:59Because if you are, keep going. Your perspective is hard won and
- 4:04it matters. But if you're not, there's a
- 4:07seat at the oars waiting, and the view from there is always
- 4:12better than the view from the back of the boat.
- 4:15Pick up an oar. That's where the real
- 4:17conversation starts. That's it for today.
- 4:22I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 4:27tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 4:32with another daily quote.
