- 0:11Today on Living on the Edge with Chip Ingram.
- 0:14Have you ever wondered what the Bible means when
- 0:16it says we're living in the last days and what
- 0:19to expect? Today we'll answer that question.
- 0:22Stay with me. When things fall apart, when violence
- 0:30rises, trust erodes, and people close to you
- 0:33seem to be drifting, how do you stay grounded?
- 0:35Paul had a very specific answer for Timothy.
- 0:38And today on Living on the Edge, Chip Ingram
- 0:41helps us realize that answer for ourselves as
- 0:44he turns to 2 Timothy. I'm Dave Drewy, and we're
- 0:47in a series called You Can Make Disciples, Personal
- 0:49Coaching from the Apostle Paul. If you have your
- 0:53Bible handy, go ahead and turn to 2 Timothy chapter
- 0:553, starting in verse 1. Now here's Chip with
- 0:59today's message titled, Be Prepared, Don't Be
- 1:02Surprised. When we are surprised, we react. When
- 1:08we are prepared, we respond. When we are surprised
- 1:13by things, we react. When we are prepared, we
- 1:19respond. And I thought about how when you're
- 1:23surprised, and when you're surprised by evil,
- 1:27it's disorienting. I think the last few years
- 1:32have been very disorienting, haven't they been?
- 1:35I mean, it's just, it's like violence and evil
- 1:38and it's grown and grown and grown, but then
- 1:41it kind of got like, it went nuts. It was similar
- 1:44to... is a fellow that I knew. I did know him
- 1:47real well. He actually had gone to seminary.
- 1:50He visited our church quite a bit. He was in
- 1:53the area. And I got a phone call from his wife,
- 1:56said, this is absolutely crazy. Will you please
- 1:58help my husband? And he's in jail right now.
- 2:01I said, he's what? Yes, he's in jail. They've
- 2:03accused him of sexual molestation. So I got to
- 2:07find out what's going on and he's in jail and
- 2:09I call him in jail and what's going on and huge
- 2:11misunderstanding and I have no idea what's going
- 2:14on here and maybe someone's made accusations
- 2:17and so I jump into it and I happen to know the
- 2:20DA pretty well and got on the inside to find
- 2:24out. I think there's a tremendous injustice.
- 2:27I mean, this guy went to this seminary and he's
- 2:30this person in the community. And, you know,
- 2:34I'm trying to help his wife and just thinking,
- 2:35oh, my gosh. And DA says, Chip, can we talk?
- 2:41I said, yeah. He said, well, there's been this
- 2:45allegation. Yeah. He said, but the reason he
- 2:49is where he is is that we have a number of others
- 2:55who aren't willing at this point yet to testify
- 2:57publicly, but we have a string of these. What?
- 3:01You know what? It's true. It's true. When evil
- 3:07surprises you, when things start happening that
- 3:11are almost hard to digest, it's very disorienting.
- 3:16And my first thought was, well, do I not have
- 3:18any discernment anymore? I mean, how could I
- 3:22never see anything? Or what's happening to the
- 3:26world? And then thoughts like... well, who can
- 3:29I really trust? And can we believe in people,
- 3:31right? And then you see, and then now it's happened
- 3:34all across the culture. And so Paul warns of
- 3:39an increase in wickedness in the last days. And
- 3:42we'll talk about the last days. Let me just read
- 3:46verses one through about five. But realize this.
- 3:53That in the last days, difficult times will come.
- 3:56That word difficult can also mean dangerous,
- 3:58challenging. For people will be lovers of self
- 4:03and lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, slanders,
- 4:06disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving,
- 4:10irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self
- 4:13-control. brutal, haters of good, treacherous,
- 4:18reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather
- 4:21than the lovers of God, holding, notice the context
- 4:23of this, holding to a form of godliness although
- 4:27they've denied its power. Command, avoid such
- 4:32people as these. So let's ask and answer two
- 4:36questions and then let's dig in and talk about
- 4:40what are the implications. Question number one
- 4:43should be, Are we in the last days, right? Hebrews
- 4:48chapter one. God, after he spoke long ago to
- 4:52the fathers and the prophets and in many portions
- 4:55and many ways, in these last days has spoken
- 5:00to us through his son, whom he appointed heir
- 5:04of all things, through whom he also made the
- 5:08world. When Jesus came, And revealed himself
- 5:15as the son of God and the Messiah and the savior
- 5:19of the world. Biblically speaking, that's when
- 5:22the last days begin. We are in the last days.
- 5:26Because this is the last installment. There isn't
- 5:31something else coming later. This is the era
- 5:35of the church, of God's appeal, of salvation.
- 5:38And depending on your theology, you're turning
- 5:41the end times. Church will be raptured. The Lord
- 5:45will return. He'll set up his kingdom. And on
- 5:48we go. We are in the last days. Now, what we
- 5:52need to understand is that we're a couple thousand
- 5:54years from when the last days began. And so I
- 5:59think it's fair to say, like, how long are these
- 6:03last days? Well, after a few decades of the church,
- 6:08some early Christians were saying, hey, you know,
- 6:11what's the deal with the last days? And so in
- 6:141 Peter 3, Peter explains, know this first of
- 6:19all, that in the last days, mockers will come
- 6:21with their mocking, following after their own
- 6:24desires and saying, where's the promise of his
- 6:27coming? For since the father's fell asleep, all
- 6:30things continue just as they were from the beginning
- 6:33of creation. For when they maintain this, it
- 6:36escapes their notice that by the word of God,
- 6:39the heavens existed long ago and the earth was
- 6:42formed out of the water by the water through
- 6:44which the world at that time was destroyed by
- 6:48being flooded with water. But by his word, the
- 6:50present heavens and earth are being reserved
- 6:53for fire, kept for the day of judgment, destruction
- 6:56of the ungodly people. Do not let this one fact
- 6:59escape you. Notice, beloved, that with the Lord,
- 7:03one day is like a thousand years and a thousand
- 7:06years like one day. The Lord is not slow about
- 7:10his promise, as some count slowness, but is patient
- 7:14toward you, not willing for any to perish, but
- 7:18for all to come to repentance. And so I think
- 7:22when you open this chapter and he says, mark
- 7:24this, Timothy, in the last days, evil things
- 7:28are going to come. And then he starts to lay
- 7:30them out. He's saying, in the last days, beginning
- 7:33now, these are the kind of things you're going
- 7:35to see. And the inference here is, as we get
- 7:38closer and closer, these kind of things will
- 7:41intensify and become more and more the norm instead
- 7:46of the exception. Does that make sense? What
- 7:49Timothy needed to know was the things that he
- 7:51was seeing that was so overwhelming and so wicked
- 7:54were what Jesus said would happen. What characterizes
- 7:59the increase of wickedness is primarily self
- 8:02-love, love of money, love of pleasure, and then
- 8:08the dominoes. How about this? Lean back. Amplify
- 8:13Bible. But understand this, that in the last
- 8:16days, dangerous times of great stress and trouble
- 8:19will come. Difficult days that will be hard to
- 8:22bear. For people will be lovers of self, narcissistic,
- 8:26self -focused, lovers of money, impelled by greed,
- 8:30boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to
- 8:33parents, ungrateful, unholy and profane. And
- 8:36they will be unloving. They'll be devoid of natural
- 8:40human affection. They'll be calloused. and inhumane,
- 8:44irreconcilable. They'll gossip maliciously. They'll
- 8:49be devoid of any self -control, intemperate and
- 8:52immoral. They'll be brutal, haters of good, traitors
- 8:57in relationships, reckless and conceited, lovers
- 9:00of sensual pleasure rather than lovers of God,
- 9:03holding to a form of outward godliness, religion,
- 9:07although they have denied its power, for their
- 9:10conduct nullifies their claim of faith. Avoid
- 9:13such people and keep far away from them. And
- 9:17then he's going to give a couple of examples
- 9:19so that Timothy realizes, hey, this has happened
- 9:25in the past. And so the question I put here is,
- 9:30how are we tempted to interpret these developments?
- 9:34When you've seen all this wickedness and all
- 9:36this violence and stuff happening, down deep,
- 9:39what are your feelings? What have you done? Where
- 9:43are your fears? And you know what we would hear?
- 9:48Just feels like the world's out of control. Feels
- 9:51hopeless. I'm scared to death for those of you
- 9:54that are grandparents or for those of you parents.
- 9:56What kind of world are my kids gonna come into?
- 10:00Is it even gonna be safe to walk in the streets
- 10:02in the future, right? These are the kind of things
- 10:05that create incredible angst, anxiety, depression.
- 10:12Division. When things are really getting crazy,
- 10:15what do we do? We're all human, right? Remember
- 10:17when we were little kids and things got really
- 10:19hard, you blame your brother, you blame your
- 10:21sister. Well, when they get really hard in a
- 10:24society, you find some other people to blame.
- 10:26And it's them and the problems out there. And
- 10:31we get more and more and more divided. And we
- 10:34create this... petri dish culturally of anger
- 10:37and blame and hurt and suspicion and lack of
- 10:42trust and fear. And that's the temptation that
- 10:47we have. And in the midst of that, there's this
- 10:51supernatural community, this group of people
- 10:56that is what's called the body of Jesus. his
- 11:00hands, his feet, his eyes, people that live above
- 11:04all that fray, people who understand the fallenness
- 11:08of mankind, people who recognize the things that
- 11:11they have done and been forgiven of, people who
- 11:13grasp that this is our opportunity in the midst
- 11:16of all this pain and blame and violence, this
- 11:19is the opportunity to love and to heal and to
- 11:23respond and to set an example. And what Paul
- 11:27is saying to Timothy is, This is going to be
- 11:31the normal thing, but you got to understand this
- 11:33is how people react. For some people, you isolate.
- 11:39For some people, they begin to doubt. You know,
- 11:42I don't believe anymore that God's sovereign.
- 11:44If he was, we wouldn't be having this. This isn't
- 11:47the life. I've gone to church. I tithe. I read
- 11:51my Bible regularly. And look at what happened.
- 11:54Look what happened in my world. Look what happened
- 11:56in our company. Look what happened in our nation,
- 11:57right? Do you understand where this goes? That's
- 12:01why he's writing to Timothy and that's why we're
- 12:03reading it today. We're tempted to feel hopeless
- 12:06and helpless and blame and question God's purposes.

- 12:44How are we to respond to these developments?
- 12:47Look at verse 6. He says, avoid, turn away from
- 12:52such people and their behavior. The two temptations
- 12:57are to, one, compromise or to isolate. It's like,
- 13:03you know what? It's so crazy out there. I'm just
- 13:07going to kind of watch it on TV and hope it doesn't
- 13:09get too close to me and, you know, my little
- 13:11world. The problem is your little world keeps
- 13:14shrinking, right? The flip side is, we've all
- 13:19heard that illustration where you put the frog
- 13:21in water and you do the temperature very, very,
- 13:24very slowly. I think as it erodes more and more
- 13:28in the culture, you're going to see more and
- 13:30more things that even five years ago, Christians
- 13:34would never do this that will become commonplace
- 13:37because people will compromise. I was counseling
- 13:41with a, a person a year or so ago, and a godly
- 13:47person, great family, and a couple of his godly
- 13:51friends, and one was going through a tough time,
- 13:52and he kind of tried to help his buddy, and eventually,
- 13:56you know, they got a divorce. Then it happened
- 13:58to another close friend, and so his couple closest
- 14:01friends are going through these things, and then,
- 14:05you know, they entered a new world. Now they're
- 14:08wounded, now they're hurt, and now they're sort
- 14:09of... Back in it? Well, now they're sleeping
- 14:12around. And I said, you know, what do you think
- 14:18about all that? Well, I'm really trying to help.
- 14:20I'm really trying to help them. And I said, are
- 14:21they willfully just kind of living that out?
- 14:25Yeah, but, you know, we're talking. And I, you
- 14:28know how pastors are, I pulled out the Bible.
- 14:30And so I said, you know, I know you want to help
- 14:35them. This passage says when a so -called brother
- 14:39or sister is living in willful sin and you talk
- 14:42to them and they don't respond at all, don't
- 14:47even eat with them. Don't keep providing the
- 14:50spiritual and relational support that facilitates
- 14:55the benefits of being in the body of Christ instead
- 14:58of allowing the consequences of their actions
- 15:01to be, remember what Paul said, I turn this one
- 15:04over to Satan to buffet him. The goal wasn't
- 15:06to hurt him. It was to restore that person that
- 15:09was involved in immorality in the Corinthian
- 15:11church. And I'll never forget, he said, well,
- 15:14you know, I could never do that. Which was followed
- 15:17sometime later by a moral failure in his life.
- 15:211 Corinthians 15, 33. Bad company corrupts good
- 15:26morals every time. And none of us are immune.
- 15:30It's happening so subtly. And it's not just in
- 15:34the sexual area. Ask yourself, how are people
- 15:36viewing money? How are people viewing priorities?
- 15:40How are people viewing sort of what's acceptable
- 15:43or not acceptable? And I don't mean culturally,
- 15:44I mean from what the scripture says. And so notice
- 15:48how he picks it up. He talks about the specific
- 15:51ways these people live it out. For among them
- 15:54are those who slip into households and captivate
- 15:56weak women, weighed down with sins, led on by
- 15:59various impulses. Always learning, never. able
- 16:03to come to a knowledge of the truth. So he says,
- 16:06Timothy, this is a current example of how these
- 16:10things, not just in the last days, some days,
- 16:13some way, but these things are playing out right
- 16:15now. You just need to be aware. And then he gives
- 16:18him a historic example. And then he goes on to
- 16:21say, just as Janus and Jambres opposed Moses,
- 16:24so these men also opposed the truth. Men of depraved
- 16:27minds, worthless in regard to the faith. By tradition,
- 16:32those were two of the magicians who when Moses
- 16:35did, remember all those supernatural things,
- 16:38they could copy it, copy it, copy it until he
- 16:41did some things that required the creation of
- 16:43life. And he goes, you know, it's happening today.
- 16:47It happened back in Moses' days. And then notice,
- 16:50but he says, look at the outcome. Look at the
- 16:53outcome. But they will not make further progress,
- 16:57for their foolishness will be obvious to all,
- 17:00just as it was also of Janus and Jambres. So
- 17:04you're Timothy, you know your Old Testament,
- 17:06and you're thinking of the challenge and the
- 17:08bondage and what they went through. And Moses,
- 17:11who was bold, and before being bold, what he
- 17:14got? He got knocked by Pharaoh and he got knocked
- 17:17by his own people. Do you see the picture he's
- 17:19trying to see? And so Moses gave up and said,
- 17:24I guess it's not worth it. Oh no, that's not
- 17:26how the story goes. So Moses hung in there. And
- 17:31Moses had challenges and doubts and struggles.
- 17:35And the Lord was with him. And he's saying, Timothy,
- 17:38this is how life goes. And now he wants to sort
- 17:44of help him get on the positive side of things.
- 17:48You'll notice. In the next section, I just entitled
- 17:51this, Don't Be Afraid, Keep Pressing Ahead, verses
- 17:5410 through 17. Don't be afraid. We can't live
- 17:59our life out of the lens of fear. You have to
- 18:03live your life out of a lens of faith. But this
- 18:07kind of evil causes us to question that. That
- 18:10kind of evil causes us to wonder, can we trust
- 18:14God? Can we trust his promises? And what Paul's
- 18:17trying to help him see is, okay, Timothy, so
- 18:21notice this. Let's remember some of your past
- 18:24progress. Verse 10, now you, he's contrasting
- 18:29him with these people that are going down very
- 18:33bad paths. Now you followed my teaching, conduct,
- 18:38purpose, faith, patience, love, perseverance.
- 18:44persecutions and suffering such as happened to
- 18:48me in Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra, what
- 18:52persecutions I endured and out of them all, what's
- 18:57the punchline? The Lord rescued me. I would encourage
- 19:03you to remember past progress, to literally kind
- 19:08of look in the rear view mirror, not maybe a
- 19:11year or two, but But to try and even if you need
- 19:15to sit quietly and ask God or especially with
- 19:18family members, where has God shown up in the
- 19:22most challenging and difficult times in our life?
- 19:26And you would start to tell stories about taking
- 19:28one of your kids to the ICU. You talk about a
- 19:32time in some of our cases when one of you had
- 19:36cancer and it was very questionable whether you're
- 19:39going to make it. And you start looking back,
- 19:42looking back, looking back, looking back, and
- 19:44you would have a story that God has rescued you
- 19:49out of things in the past. He's not idle. And
- 19:54by the way, I know I'm a broken record. If you
- 19:59keep watching a lot of news, you will live in
- 20:03fear. Because the news is made and geared to
- 20:07be sensational. It's to get your attention and
- 20:10to keep you watching. And when you keep watching,
- 20:13since you're a product of your thought life,
- 20:15you will assume that things that are happening
- 20:17on the news are going to happen to you. And the
- 20:20lens in which you will look at the world is it's
- 20:22negative, it's violent, it's terrible, it's bad,
- 20:25and it's not gonna get better. And so your only
- 20:29two choices are one is to isolate or to compromise
- 20:31or medicate yourself in some way. And you can
- 20:36do it with drugs, you can do it with alcohol,
- 20:37you can do it with work, you can do it with escape.
- 20:40And so, you know, you need to kind of be aware
- 20:43of what's going on. But if you get on and watch
- 20:47your news feeds and you scroll and every time
- 20:50that thing goes off, oh, can you hear it? There's
- 20:52another shooting. And what about this? And what
- 20:54about that? When's the last time someone said,
- 20:57I'd just like to declare that in the last 10
- 20:59minutes there were about 27 .5 million acts of
- 21:03kindness of people who cared for one another.
- 21:05I got an email from a friend who works in the
- 21:07Global South, and he gave the statistics of the
- 21:10number of people in the last two or three years
- 21:13that have come to Christ in the Global South.
- 21:15It's more of all the people that have come to
- 21:17Christ in all of church history. God's working
- 21:20in power. You don't get any good news. God's
- 21:22working in amazing ways here and all around the
- 21:25world. There's young people that are on fire
- 21:27for God. They're not all just a bunch of slackers.
- 21:29But you know what? It's not going to make the
- 21:32news. And we have, by and large, a church that
- 21:37is living out of fear. This is Living on the

- 23:29final thoughts. As we close today's program,
- 23:32the teaching from the Scripture brought to mind
- 23:36one of the most challenging things in my life.
- 23:39There's times where God says, Chip, this is what
- 23:42I want you to do. But the moment I think of obeying
- 23:45it, I realize I'm going to disappoint someone
- 23:47or someone's going to think that if I do that,
- 23:51I don't care about them anymore. Pleasing people
- 23:53or pleasing God, I feel between the rock and
- 23:56the hard place. And here's my question for you
- 23:59today. What is it that God has prompted and brought
- 24:03to your mind, maybe over and over, about a relationship
- 24:06or about a habit or about a practice? But you
- 24:10know if you obey God, some people will be very
- 24:13disappointed. or you think you're going to let
- 24:16them down, or they'll think less of you. Would
- 24:19you be willing today to ask Jesus to give you
- 24:22the strength and the help to obey him? Here's
- 24:26your verse for the day, Proverbs 29, 25. The
- 24:30fear of man is a snare, but blessed is he who
- 24:34trusts in the Lord. Trust God, you'll never regret
- 24:38it. I'm Dave Drewy. Chip has a question he's
- 24:41been asking church leaders for years, and the
- 24:43answer shocked him. Don't miss the next part
- 24:46of our message. Be prepared. Don't be surprised.
