- 0:39SPEAKER_04: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:46SPEAKER_04: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:49SPEAKER_04: Tristan, how are you doing today, man?
- 0:51SPEAKER_03: Well, you know, I'm just having that day where I'm looking at the good and the bad.
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: So, see, here's the good thing.
- 0:56SPEAKER_03: There's one more game left in the regular football season.
- 1:00SPEAKER_03: But remember, this is a Texas Tech team that's going bowling.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 1:04SPEAKER_03: But the bad thing is there is one more game left of football, and we can't leave this in the past.
- 1:11SPEAKER_03: And we can't move on and focus on only basketball, as we are a basketball school, and that's where our attention needs to be at this point.
- 1:18SPEAKER_03: Always has been.
- 1:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and uh the other bad thing is we got creamed by Oklahoma State.
- 1:24SPEAKER_04: Oh, I just I I have already removed that from that's a no, that's that's another bad thing that we need to talk about today, unfortunately.
- 1:31SPEAKER_04: Uh, during this uh just to kind of get you ready for the episode, Oklahoma State.
- 1:36SPEAKER_04: We're gonna talk a little Baylor, we're gonna talk a little basketball update, which will be the much more happy part of this episode.
- 1:42SPEAKER_04: Um, give you a talk a tech breakdown.
- 1:44SPEAKER_04: We're gonna talk some Thanksgiving, get some get some takes out there, get stuff that the people need to know about Thanksgiving, you know, because we're right about everything.
- 1:54SPEAKER_04: And so, you know, we're gonna get that out to the people and we're gonna talk about it.
- 1:56SPEAKER_03: Takes are never on wrong on this program.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: It's true, it's true.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: We're always always 100% fact-based podcast.
- 2:03SPEAKER_04: You get the 100% guarantee here with the talking tech boys, uh, that we're correct on everything.
- 2:09SPEAKER_04: No, we're actually idiots and wrong about most things, but we're not wrong.
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: If we get something right, it's on accident, that's for sure.
- 2:15SPEAKER_04: It's true, it's true.
- 2:16SPEAKER_04: We're not wrong when it comes to uh the pitiful performance that Texas Tech put out there against uh against the Cowboys and Lubbock.
- 2:26SPEAKER_04: Um again, don't ever talk about a night game in the Jones to me.
- 2:29SPEAKER_04: Don't ever do it.
- 2:30SPEAKER_04: I don't I don't care.
- 2:31SPEAKER_04: I don't ever want a night game in the Jones again.
- 2:33SPEAKER_04: I just don't because every single time since Cliff Kingsbury, they've been awful.
- 2:38SPEAKER_04: Every single night game, I bet, has been awful, or at least the last five years.
- 2:42SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 2:43SPEAKER_04: But uh this was ugly all around.
- 2:45SPEAKER_04: Uh terrible offensive uh performance from our Red Raiders.
- 2:49SPEAKER_04: Uh pretty good defensive showing.
- 2:51SPEAKER_04: I will say they did enough uh to you know make it more of a game than what it was, but offense just gave you zero.
- 2:58SPEAKER_04: Uh and you know that sticks, man.
- 3:02SPEAKER_03: That this this game really exemplified everything that Texas Tech has as a football program.
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: Like defense is never gonna be the problem, it's not gonna be the issue that you're worried about.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: Offense still doesn't find its way, it's been that way for a while.
- 3:14SPEAKER_03: You know, we're not really known for lighting up the scoreboard, it hasn't been that way in decades, right?
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: So it's just no, but no, but really, I mean it's it's kind of crazy that you look at a game where we get shut out for the first time in well over a decade and you go, it could have been worse because it really could have.
- 3:32SPEAKER_03: Our defense played their absolute behinds off.
- 3:35SPEAKER_03: Oklahoma State only scored two touchdowns, so we really kept them out of the red zone, but man, it just unfortunately we didn't know how to put the ball in that's in the end zone either.
- 3:46SPEAKER_03: So it was just uh zero on the whatever.
- 3:51SPEAKER_04: We didn't know how to get any points on the yes.
- 3:55SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah, it was it was bad.
- 3:57SPEAKER_04: Uh, I mean, credit to Oklahoma State's defense.
- 4:01SPEAKER_04: They're uh it's that's one of the best defenses I've seen uh in the Big 12 in a long time.
- 4:06SPEAKER_04: I mean, this uh this Oklahoma State defense is really special, and that can't be uh, you know, that that's we shouldn't just push that to the side uh because they really are a good team.
- 4:18SPEAKER_04: Their offense is is it's not gonna carry them like their defense carries them.
- 4:23SPEAKER_04: Uh, and we saw that in this game, and man, it was just like, you know, you think about everything.
- 4:29SPEAKER_04: We see Donovan Smith last week uh just go put on a show against Iowa State and uh get us to bowl eligibility, and we're all super high.
- 4:37SPEAKER_04: And you know, that must have just got in a lot of their heads, uh, to be honest.
- 4:41SPEAKER_04: And that's been a thing uh from for a long time now with Cliff Kingsbury and Matt Wells.
- 4:47SPEAKER_04: Um, is we don't really know how to respond after we get a good win.
- 4:51SPEAKER_04: We don't know how to keep keep our our heads level headed, and you know, we just we just sputter.
- 4:57SPEAKER_04: We can't uh and and we'll say the magic word stack success.
- 5:01SPEAKER_04: We can't do that.
- 5:01SPEAKER_04: You beat me to it.
- 5:02SPEAKER_04: We do not know how to do that here at Texas Tech.
- 5:05SPEAKER_04: Uh don't expect two great weeks in a row, apparently.
- 5:09SPEAKER_04: Um, and you know, new era, everything like that.
- 5:11SPEAKER_04: The interim head coach, uh, red shirt freshman quarterback.
- 5:15SPEAKER_04: I I mean, you know, we had a lot of things that that if if an outsider were to look at this game and see, hey, Tech's got an interim head coach, they are starting a freshman quarterback, they're playing a top 10 team in the nation with one of the best defenses in the nation.
- 5:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they're gonna lose by a lot.
- 5:32SPEAKER_04: But you know, uh there there could have been more done uh on the offensive side.
- 5:37SPEAKER_04: Our offensive line is bad, like very, very bad.
- 5:41SPEAKER_04: Uh, I'm I'm ready to move on from uh pretty much everything about this offensive line.
- 5:47SPEAKER_04: There's obviously there's there's moments, and you know, Dawson Deaton's a good guy to have on your team, and you know, Josh Burgers had some good games, but overall, this unit has just been pretty brutal all season.
- 5:58SPEAKER_04: Uh, Coach Farmer not doing a great job over there on that end.
- 6:01SPEAKER_04: I don't expect him to return on Joey McGuire's staff.
- 6:05SPEAKER_04: Uh, but yeah, man, that's just a big issue.
- 6:07SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: You can see it reflected in the way our quarterbacks played an absolute bummer of a showing from uh either quarterback stepping out on the field.
- 6:15SPEAKER_03: I don't think Baron Borden really had a real chance to get going in any capacity to to re to prove anything in his future there.
- 6:22SPEAKER_03: Um, but Donovan Smith, like you said, you know, he came came off of a great game against Iowa State, and Iowa State's got a good defense.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: I mean, this isn't Iowa State does not have an anemic defense, it's not Oklahoma State's, but it's not like we were playing up against a paper thin one like Kansas or something.
- 6:38SPEAKER_03: So it's just kind of a head scratcher to see our offensive oriented uh interim head coach and and Sonny Cumbie not being able to put together any sort of plays to put any points on the board.
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: Uh it's just it's just frustrating.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: And you couldn't even see Donovan Smith like will himself into any scoring range at all.
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: Because that's what was so impressive about him against Iowa State is he kept plays alive, you know.
- 6:59SPEAKER_03: Anytime the the pocket collapsed with these amazing, these not so amazing uh O-line guys that we have, um, he was still able to make some great plays out of it, still get some major yardage, still get its our receivers, but not today.
- 7:11SPEAKER_03: Now, I mean, not against Oklahoma State.
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: So just one to forget in a long line of games against the Cowboys this decade.
- 7:19SPEAKER_03: Um, I mean, we can say that part about pretty much in every team, but like you said, man, if you're an outsider looking at this game, you know, getting beat by 23 by a top 10 team, you know, and keeping them below 30 points.
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: I don't think that's exactly a disaster of a game, but it's certainly disappointing.
- 7:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's shut out, the shutout stinks.
- 7:35SPEAKER_04: Uh no matter how you look at it.
- 7:37SPEAKER_04: First time since 1997, the Texas Tech was shut out.
- 7:40SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, I I wanted I wanted more from Donovan.
- 7:43SPEAKER_04: I think he looked really flustered, and that's not something I expected from him after that Iowa State game.
- 7:49SPEAKER_04: He looked very cool, calm, and collected, and uh was just the opposite of that against Oklahoma State.
- 7:54SPEAKER_04: And you know, I know he's a freshman, uh, but you know, we were basically ready uh for Donovan Smith to be the future quarterback here at Texas Tech.
- 8:02SPEAKER_04: And uh, you know, we can we can see now that you know he's got some flaws.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: Did we fall victim to uh the classic overreactionary fan off the high of becoming ball eligible?
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: We always do, we always do, don't we?
- 8:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, uh, so it's definitely gonna be a competition.
- 8:19SPEAKER_04: This is not anybody's job by any means.
- 8:22SPEAKER_04: I mean, Barron Morton's gonna be heavily involved in this process.
- 8:25SPEAKER_04: Uh, it looks like you know, he's liking stuff on Instagram and liking commits coming to tech and liking Joey McGuire's stuff.
- 8:32SPEAKER_04: So I would expect him to stay.
- 8:33SPEAKER_04: I'm not gonna say 100% that he's staying or anything like that, but uh I expect it to be a battle between Donovan and Barron uh next season, too.
- 8:42SPEAKER_04: Uh, I can definitely, you know, that that can change.
- 8:45SPEAKER_04: That's just a hunch on my end.
- 8:46SPEAKER_04: But uh, I think if both those guys stay, it's right now it's 50-50 for sure.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: You you're forgetting quarterback number one on the depth chart and Tyler Shuck.
- 8:56SPEAKER_04: You know, I I get I could very well see Shuck staying.
- 8:58SPEAKER_04: I'm not saying he's not, but I could also see him transferring and doing all this.
- 9:02SPEAKER_04: You know, with with how Donovan played against Iowa State, you know, you gotta you gotta kind of think that he was the guy in line, but I guess this game kind of changes it.
- 9:12SPEAKER_04: So I uh what I'm really trying to say is I really don't know what the hell's gonna happen with the quarterback room uh moving forward.
- 9:18SPEAKER_04: But uh if Shuck comes back, fantastic, awesome, cool.
- 9:21SPEAKER_04: Uh hopefully he's healthy and ready to go.
- 9:23SPEAKER_04: And uh, but I could also see him transferring or going to NFL.
- 9:26SPEAKER_03: I mean, all things considered, I think that's a pretty good situation for Tech Tech to be in to have these two really they really are talented guys in the locker room, they have potential in Smith and Morton.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: So that I'm not disappointed with the way the depth chart would unfold that way.
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: Um, so I think either way, you're probably looking at a pretty positive outcome.
- 9:45SPEAKER_03: So at least there's something to not worry about next season, I would say.
- 9:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, Donovan Smith, like you said, he's still a freshman and it's his only second game he's really started in.
- 9:54SPEAKER_03: And he played up against a great defense, but it's still, I mean, this really did open the door where there's going to be a conversation that no, no, just because he had a great way to get us all eligible doesn't mean Barry Morein's not an insanely talented kid in himself.
- 10:06SPEAKER_03: So I it's definitely something to watch, like you said.
- 10:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 10:09SPEAKER_04: Uh, what are your thoughts on on Sonny Cumbie after this one?
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: Uh, dude, it's it's totally obviously like I just said, we fell victim to perhaps being oversold on beating Iowa State.
- 10:21SPEAKER_03: It's been a while since we've beaten Iowa State, and you know, getting bull eligible has unfortunately been a rarity for us lately.
- 10:27SPEAKER_03: So I think it got us just really excited and saying, you know, that was an amazingly coached game, great offense against Iowa State.
- 10:32SPEAKER_03: Um, and it was you can't we can't take that away from him just because we had a bad game on Saturday.
- 10:39SPEAKER_03: But I don't think he's a shoe-in for the offensive coordinator job.
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: I mean, he has to remember, obviously, he is remembering that this is still his audition for the job.
- 10:48SPEAKER_03: And whenever you're looking to become the offensive coordinator again, whenever you have a fat goose egg on the scoreboard, and your job is to not make it so goose egg, you know, it's the inverse of that.
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: Um, it kind of complicates your chances, it doesn't make him sore exactly.
- 11:03SPEAKER_03: He obviously has another game to go, but man, I I trust Joey Maguire to make the smart hire rather than perhaps an emotional hire at that point.
- 11:13SPEAKER_03: What do you think?
- 11:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, I'm not 100% out or 100 in on Sonny Gumby.
- 11:19SPEAKER_04: I hope I in my eyes, it's Joey Maguire's choice, and I'm gonna get behind whoever he decides to bring in.
- 11:25SPEAKER_04: Uh, it really seems like him and Sonny are tight, uh, you know, and I could definitely see him returning, and I would be fine with that.
- 11:31SPEAKER_04: I really I think this was one bad game against a really good defense, you know.
- 11:36SPEAKER_04: It's uh I I think I can't I can't say enough about how good Oklahoma State's defense is from their I mean, the most balanced unit I've seen in a long time uh in the Big 12.
- 11:47SPEAKER_04: And so uh I really think their defense is scary.
- 11:50SPEAKER_04: They've held uh I think their last four Big 12 games, they've held all their quarterbacks to under 150 yards that they've faced.
- 11:57SPEAKER_04: I mean, Kansas put up zero yards against them.
- 12:00SPEAKER_04: Uh Jared Dageie only had like 106 and a couple interceptions, and then uh they they held um, I think TCU, uh, the guy that just lit up Baylor, uh, you know, they held him pretty good in their game last week.
- 12:13SPEAKER_04: So uh, you know, this this Oklahoma State defense is nothing to mess with, and uh that's really what I'm gonna chalk it up to.
- 12:20SPEAKER_04: Uh, we'll see how we do against Baylor and in the bowl game.
- 12:22SPEAKER_04: And I think that that's gonna matter too, because our opinion changes week to week, man.
- 12:27SPEAKER_04: That's how it's that's how it kind of goes with uh Texas Tech fandom.
- 12:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we do we need some dang consistency, please.
- 12:33SPEAKER_03: Joey McGuire, please give us a foundation to build our expectations on because just right now we're kind of lost in the woods, we don't really know what to expect because we're already doing better than we expected after the way the season began and uh the way we you know your head coach gets fired in the middle of the season.
- 12:51SPEAKER_03: I'm already looking at the season the the the way the season unfolded given the circumstances.
- 12:55SPEAKER_03: I view it as a success.
- 12:57SPEAKER_03: I think this is a successful season given given the cards we see, because you know, uh becoming bull eligible was not a given at all once the season really started.
- 13:07SPEAKER_03: Once we got into the further into it, seeing how Matt Wells completely collapsed, couldn't stack any success, was unable to make win tremendous games, and you know, we we fire him, and you promote interim head coach who's never been a head coach in his life, gets us to a bowl game.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: You know, I'm gonna like I said, this is a successful season, no matter how it ends from here, but we just don't really know how to view anything else, so it's just kind of tough.
- 13:29SPEAKER_03: So it makes us reactionary, yeah.
- 13:31SPEAKER_04: No doubt.
- 13:32SPEAKER_04: I mean, just take it, take it for what it is, and just be happy.
- 13:36SPEAKER_04: We have another guy in charge moving forward.
- 13:38SPEAKER_04: That's really the the uh the best thing for me is just having a different guy in the locker room and and a guy who's already out recruiting Matt Wells, and right, you know, a guy that's that's in here that's gonna hopefully change the culture.
- 13:51SPEAKER_04: And and I, you know, I'm ready for that.
- 13:54SPEAKER_03: He he not only is he out recruiting Matt Wells, but the energy around recruiting is just something else.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: Like you see these recruits tweeting with a different kind of energy than they were, like saying, Oh, good time at Texas Tech, remember with Matt Wells.
- 14:06SPEAKER_03: But no, they're like tweeting photos with everybody and just a lot of like man, we can't wait to come back and all that.
- 14:12SPEAKER_03: So it's really cool.
- 14:13SPEAKER_03: I just think Joey McGuire brings a different kind of energy that Matt Wells just never had.
- 14:17SPEAKER_03: Uh, I think Matt Wells maybe tried to treat it a little more professionally while Joey Maguire is just kind of this energetic, in your face, slap your helmet kind of guy, you know.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: So it's just it's really fun to watch.
- 14:27SPEAKER_03: Um, I before we move on, though, you know, my brother was very upset with the offensive game plan against Oklahoma State.
- 14:34SPEAKER_03: He is very mad that we only handed the ball off a few times for a rushing play.
- 14:39SPEAKER_03: What do you what do you see here?
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: I mean, it is uh Sarajik only got it five times, Xavier White only got it three times, Dodge Brooks only three times.
- 14:47SPEAKER_03: I mean, what was that just like a desperation because we need to throw it to get it back in the game, or what do you think?
- 14:52SPEAKER_03: What do you see?
- 14:53SPEAKER_04: I actually think we tried a lot of different things in this game.
- 14:56SPEAKER_04: Uh, whether it was trying uh we got nothing from the running, we got nothing exactly, and so it's you know, it's hard to keep going back to it if you it you know you're trying to run through the run through the lines there and you're just not getting anything.
- 15:09SPEAKER_04: And uh their defensive line is fantastic, so uh, you know, you got to find other ways to win.
- 15:14SPEAKER_04: And I think uh going to a more pass-heavy uh game plan there was the right move.
- 15:20SPEAKER_04: Uh, it's just Donovan Smith didn't didn't get the job done and didn't make good passes and didn't give his receivers uh you know a good ball most of the time.
- 15:29SPEAKER_04: I mean, there was one uh series where he straight up Donovan Smith threw the ball out of bounds, three feet out of bounds, three straight times.
- 15:36SPEAKER_04: And it's like you're not gonna win anything if you're gonna do that every time.
- 15:39SPEAKER_04: So uh, you know, if we had a more experienced quarterback, I think it would have been a different uh kind of story.
- 15:45SPEAKER_04: But uh, you know, Donovan was rattled and uh Baron just isn't experienced.
- 15:49SPEAKER_04: And so I think that's what it came down to.
- 15:50SPEAKER_04: I don't really know if running the ball more would have done us a lot of good because it didn't do us any good uh in general.
- 15:56SPEAKER_04: So um yeah, I would like to get and that's what everybody wants to do.
- 16:00SPEAKER_04: They want to have a balance attack, they don't want to have an all-out, you know, effort passing the ball or all out running the ball.
- 16:06SPEAKER_04: But uh, you know, when you do have three solid running backs, you'd like to get them more involved, and we just couldn't.
- 16:12SPEAKER_04: And so that's on Sonny Cumby as well.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, man.
- 16:16SPEAKER_03: All right, I think we've talked about Mike Gundy's squad a little too much because it's just gonna make us more sad.
- 16:21SPEAKER_04: We got one more thing because friend of the pod, Austin McNamara.
- 16:24SPEAKER_04: Uh, if you can take one good thing out of this game, was Austin McNamara set an FPS record for most 50-yard punts in the game with eight of them.
- 16:34SPEAKER_04: I think the previous one was five or six.
- 16:36SPEAKER_04: I mean, this dude's fantastic, he's awesome.
- 16:38SPEAKER_04: Uh we talked to him and he's a great dude all around.
- 16:41SPEAKER_04: Uh, and um to kick that thing, I think he had like a 56 yard average on his punts this game.
- 16:47SPEAKER_04: Obviously, you don't want to punt that much in the game, but I mean, if if you are gonna, I mean, you may as well have a have a punter like Austin.
- 16:55SPEAKER_04: I mean, that dude's gonna be NFL bound one of these days.
- 16:57SPEAKER_04: Uh, hate that hate that we have this record, but really cool for Austin.
- 17:02SPEAKER_03: No, I'm glad you brought that up, man.
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: Because it's it's so easy to overlook stuff like that because you know, especially especially whenever you lose the game.
- 17:09SPEAKER_03: Um, but man, he really put us in the in a lot of great positions to get back into the game, and it's probably why we helped him to only 23 points with his punting really helped.
- 17:17SPEAKER_03: And one of his longs was 70 yards, and this guy punted for 508 total in this game.
- 17:22SPEAKER_03: So the guy's an absolute machine.
- 17:24SPEAKER_03: We said this before the season started, we said it during the season this that this guy could arguably be the best player on the team.
- 17:31SPEAKER_03: Like he is that good, his leg is that amazing.
- 17:33SPEAKER_03: It's it's crazy, and he's a friend of the pod.
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: So obviously he gets a little biased from us.
- 17:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you always got to shout out, uh, shout out Austin because he is that good.
- 17:41SPEAKER_04: Um, so you know, but let's move on uh from this uh disaster of a game.
- 17:46SPEAKER_04: Uh and let's look forward to the Baylor game because hopefully we'll put up another uh you know, Iowa state-like performance and not so much uh what we did against Oklahoma State, but it's gonna be 11 a.m.
- 17:57SPEAKER_04: on FS1.
- 17:59SPEAKER_04: Baylor is now number 11 in the AP poll.
- 18:02SPEAKER_04: Uh, this is uh gonna be a game in Waco.
- 18:04SPEAKER_04: Um if Baylor wins, they go to the Big 12 championship, and we have a chance to stop that.
- 18:09SPEAKER_04: And that's uh that's a nice feeling.
- 18:11SPEAKER_04: If we kind of ruin their ruin their chances at a Big 12 title, I would absolutely love that.
- 18:17SPEAKER_03: I would certainly not be opposed to doing such a thing to them, but and uh you know this is gonna be a little more emotional of a game, particularly for the for Baylor.
- 18:25SPEAKER_03: You know, we hire away Joe Maguire, so I think a lot, you know, he was a player favorite on that team.
- 18:29SPEAKER_03: So I think they're probably gonna come in here with a little bit more fire to you know show the new his new team what you know what they've got and what he left.
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: So I can see that happening, and it's in Waco, so that doesn't help our chances either.
- 18:41SPEAKER_03: I mean, this Baylor team's on a roll.
- 18:43SPEAKER_03: Year two of Dave Aranda, and they're already look looking at going to the Big 12 championship.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: It's outrageous, it's unfair, it's it's unreasonable, but man, it's it's just it's crazy how that team has turned around and they they do not mess around, they deserve their ranking.
- 19:01SPEAKER_03: And you know, I I don't have high hopes for this game.
- 19:03SPEAKER_03: I don't, I don't think we're gonna win.
- 19:05SPEAKER_03: Um, but you know, I think there's a chance we can pop up and pop them in the mouth, you know, maybe maybe make give it a good rivalry game.
- 19:10SPEAKER_03: I'm glad this isn't a game where we're having to, you know, are we going bowling or not?
- 19:15SPEAKER_03: Is I'm glad we've already got that out of the way because man, this will be a disappointing game to ride that on.
- 19:21SPEAKER_03: But yeah, dude, this this is a well-oiled machine.
- 19:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, this is a uh this is a game where I 100% am in effort mode.
- 19:29SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, just do it, just go out there and play.
- 19:32SPEAKER_04: Don't even think about everything.
- 19:33SPEAKER_04: I mean, we have some things going for us.
- 19:35SPEAKER_04: Uh, it looks like uh I'm not sure if this isn't confirmed yet, but uh uh starting quarterback for Baylor may not play.
- 19:44SPEAKER_04: He got hurt uh last week and he may not be playing.
- 19:47SPEAKER_04: So uh Blake Shapen is looking to be the backup as um uh Zeno left the team earlier in the year.
- 19:54SPEAKER_04: He was going to be the backup quarterback, but now they have this Shapen guy.
- 19:57SPEAKER_04: Uh didn't do much last week when he was in, but uh Baylor has a good defense.
- 20:02SPEAKER_04: Um, no doubt, not as good as Oklahoma State, but uh definitely good.
- 20:06SPEAKER_04: Uh Jalen Petrie, those type of guys on the defensive side of the ball are really fantastic.
- 20:12SPEAKER_04: Um, they rely a lot on the running game uh with Abram Smith and Trustin Ebner.
- 20:17SPEAKER_04: And I mean, the last couple weeks, we've been stopping the running game.
- 20:20SPEAKER_04: Even against Oklahoma State, they didn't, I mean, you know, they had a couple guys that had a uh decent outings, but uh overall they're they're usually a much more uh much more effective in the run game Oklahoma State is, and and we kind of stopped that down.
- 20:34SPEAKER_04: And the same thing with Iowa State with Brees Hall.
- 20:36SPEAKER_04: I mean, we'd held them to what 2.8 yards of carry.
- 20:38SPEAKER_04: So our defensive uh defensive line and defensive run stop has been uh really solid uh since that TCU game where we just gave up a billion to to Zach Evans and company.
- 20:50SPEAKER_04: But um so yeah, I mean you know, if that if that continues, I could see us, you know, potentially being in this one.
- 20:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 20:59SPEAKER_03: I I felt better about upsetting Oklahoma State because we were at home.
- 21:02SPEAKER_03: Um, but this is you know, this has similar vibes going into the OSU game with our chances, you know.
- 21:09SPEAKER_03: We had what, like a 30% chance to win against Oklahoma State, um, according to ESBN, and it'll probably be fairly similar to Baylor's.
- 21:16SPEAKER_03: So I can I can I can see us, you know, staying in it.
- 21:19SPEAKER_03: You know, it's a rivalry game, it's the last game of the season.
- 21:21SPEAKER_03: So seniors and all that are gonna want to be playing their butts off, but it's I I don't have high hopes.
- 21:26SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm a little more optimistic for games than I normally am for this, but it's just I'm I'm just not feeling it anymore with the uh you know it's it's we have an interim coach, we have we don't know what we're doing at quarterback anymore, and it's just it's just I don't think this offense has enough in it to go up against this Baylor defense and it go up against this Baylor offense.
- 21:45SPEAKER_03: I think just both are gonna be better.
- 21:47SPEAKER_03: So it's it's gonna be it's just gonna be a an uphill battle the entire time.
- 21:51SPEAKER_03: So I I I don't I don't feel great, but I hope we have fun.
- 21:55SPEAKER_04: This this is a team that is playing for a spot in the Big 12 championship, yeah.
- 21:59SPEAKER_04: If they win.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: This game.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: So they are going to be very motivated.
- 22:03SPEAKER_04: They're at their place.
- 22:04SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's tough.
- 22:05SPEAKER_04: So even Baylor could still get in if we somehow pull off an upset.
- 22:08SPEAKER_04: If uh Oklahoma State beats OU in uh in the Bedlam game this week, uh, you know, they're still in anyway.
- 22:14SPEAKER_04: But you know, I you want this automatic win.
- 22:17SPEAKER_04: You're playing against uh a team that's sixth in the conference right now with an interim head coach and a freshman at quarterback.
- 22:22SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, you're you're gonna want this win and think you can get it.
- 22:26SPEAKER_04: So um their confidence level will probably be at a at an all-time high uh playing us.
- 22:31SPEAKER_04: So uh don't I don't expect much like like what you said with Baylor, but hey, you know, if we can play spoiler, I would be more than happy.
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, especially for a team like Baylor.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: So yeah, um hey man, I I'm looking forward to getting through it because I'm excited to see who we play in the bowl.
- 22:46SPEAKER_03: Because uh at the bull game, it's just gonna feel like a new page is really turning.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: Sure, yeah.
- 22:51SPEAKER_03: We're we're finally closing the book on Matt Wells, we're closing the book on Clip Kingsbury and so on.
- 22:56SPEAKER_03: So it's just I'm ready for a new era, a new decade of Texas Tech football, and it's really gonna feel that way in the bowl game.
- 23:01SPEAKER_04: No doubt, no doubt.
- 23:03SPEAKER_04: So uh, like I said, game at 11 a.m., final Big 12 game of this season.
- 23:08SPEAKER_04: Then we can look forward to the bowl and basketball and basketball, which is exactly what we were gonna talk about next.
- 23:15SPEAKER_04: Uh, first off, basketball update.
- 23:18SPEAKER_04: Um, we played a game against incarnate word uh in South Padre.
- 23:24SPEAKER_04: Antonio Finus.
- 23:25SPEAKER_04: I I I truly I tried thinking of games that had worse production, and I just couldn't.
- 23:36SPEAKER_04: I mean, it was awful.
- 23:38SPEAKER_04: The entire viewing experience for this game was terrible.
- 23:44SPEAKER_03: Dude, it looked like they're playing in like a a chur a a big community church gymnasium.
- 23:50SPEAKER_03: That's what it looks like, first of all.
- 23:52SPEAKER_03: And second of all, that cut the commentary was so bad.
- 23:56SPEAKER_03: Oh my lord, you can totally tell they were wearing masks too.
- 24:00SPEAKER_03: Like, dude, yeah, they were yeah, probably take the mask off when you're talking into a microphone because something's blocking your mouth.
- 24:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, that was the whole thing during like the the height of COVID was you know, announcers that actually got to go to the game were speaking with masks on and it just wasn't working, and so they did the virtual thing, and you know, I just can't like I can understand if you want to wear a mask, I can understand it every, you know, all that, but uh it just doesn't come off right.
- 24:28SPEAKER_04: And uh and I don't know if I don't know if the audio itself was gonna be good.
- 24:32SPEAKER_04: I mean, it sounded like a high school mic, uh, which it probably was.
- 24:36SPEAKER_04: The game was probably played at a high school.
- 24:38SPEAKER_04: I don't know whose idea it was to go to South Padre Island and play a game there.
- 24:42SPEAKER_04: I don't know who you're trying to reach, I don't know what type of audience you're looking for.
- 24:47SPEAKER_04: There's not recruits in South Padre Island.
- 24:49SPEAKER_04: I can tell you, are you just trying to give the guys a few days just to chill on the beach or something?
- 24:54SPEAKER_04: Because uh I don't really see the uh the positive impact that playing on South Padre Island against incarnate word is gonna do for your program.
- 25:04SPEAKER_04: So I don't know who agreed to do this, but it wasn't a great idea and we should never do it again.
- 25:09SPEAKER_03: It it gives me budget Hawaii or Bahama tournament vibes, you know.
- 25:13SPEAKER_04: Like you're doing your like the like the Maui invitational is fantastic, they always put a great crew there, they get some great teams to play against each other, and this one it's like they're trying to do like a crappy Maui invitational.
- 25:28SPEAKER_04: That's what I'm saying.
- 25:29SPEAKER_04: It's it's a budget version of that.
- 25:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah, battle on the beach, and the guys said battle on the border every time.
- 25:35SPEAKER_04: Like, I don't know, man.
- 25:37SPEAKER_03: That the the broadcast was awful, yeah.
- 25:40SPEAKER_03: And it it's the November isn't exactly a great time to be at South Padre either.
- 25:44SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be pretty chilly.
- 25:45SPEAKER_03: The water's gonna be pretty cold, you know.
- 25:47SPEAKER_03: It's and you're not doing much beaching in November at South Padre.
- 25:51SPEAKER_03: I'm not ripping on South Padre, I love South Padre, but this was not a place to play a basketball game.
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: It was probably a weird pitch from the South Padre community, like, hey, let's let's host a college basketball game in uh in First Baptist's gymnasium, you know, it's just seriously, or South Padre High, like seriously.
- 26:09SPEAKER_03: I don't think there's a high school on the island, but Port Isabel, you know, like pop on over.
- 26:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but yeah, it was it was not good.
- 26:16SPEAKER_04: The the camera angle was so low, and like they didn't know how to find they were just focusing, zooming in on the ball handler at the very beginning of the game, and it's like, bro, what am I watching?
- 26:29SPEAKER_04: 15 minutes of black screen for halftime.
- 26:33SPEAKER_04: I no, I mean, no commercials was kind of cool, but like you're just a straight on shot during the commercials.
- 26:40SPEAKER_04: Like, I don't know what it was, it was bad.
- 26:43SPEAKER_03: The most jarring part was like whenever there was a timeout or something, and they you know the teams were huddling up, and it was just no audio, they just turned the audio off.
- 26:51SPEAKER_03: Like, that was so jarring.
- 26:52SPEAKER_03: I've never experienced anything like that.
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: It got so quiet.
- 26:55SPEAKER_03: Like, I'd just be sitting there talking to my fiance and then dead silence.
- 26:59SPEAKER_03: It's like this is awkward.
- 27:00SPEAKER_04: I didn't, I don't like this.
- 27:02SPEAKER_04: I'm this is weird.
- 27:04SPEAKER_04: I'm just stuck here with my thoughts.
- 27:06SPEAKER_04: I don't like this.
- 27:06SPEAKER_03: I don't want to be inside my head, not even a little bit, but I try to project my problems onto a sports game.
- 27:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I need something, I need other voices going on in the background, but uh no, I mean the game itself was fine.
- 27:22SPEAKER_04: Uh, the first probably three-fourths of the game, we were iffy.
- 27:25SPEAKER_04: Uh, Terrence Shannon Jr.
- 27:27SPEAKER_04: is back, by the way.
- 27:28SPEAKER_04: Uh, fantastic news on that end.
- 27:30SPEAKER_04: He uh that news was announced kind of like right after we recorded last week, so we didn't have that on the pod.
- 27:35SPEAKER_04: But um, you know, awesome.
- 27:38SPEAKER_04: Uh, for I did not think this was gonna happen this quickly.
- 27:41SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know how the NCAA works, uh, they don't basically.
- 27:44SPEAKER_04: And so uh, you know, I was expecting a much longer uh time frame where Terrence Shannon was going to get approved here, but uh he ended up getting approved, which is fantastic.
- 27:54SPEAKER_04: He played in this game, was immediately impactful.
- 27:56SPEAKER_04: 16 points, six boards, or six assists.
- 27:59SPEAKER_04: Or um, I mean, made the first five points of the game.
- 28:01SPEAKER_04: Three-point shot looks nice, he's as explosive as ever.
- 28:04SPEAKER_04: Uh, I just I mean, it's just one more piece.
- 28:06SPEAKER_04: It's a preseason all Big 12 guy coming back to your team.
- 28:10SPEAKER_04: And uh, I I couldn't be more excited to have him back.
- 28:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I like that.
- 28:14SPEAKER_03: I mean, I like what you said.
- 28:15SPEAKER_03: Uh, they think that it didn't take that long because I think we were all thinking that it was gonna get bogged down in the NCA bureaucracy that just takes forever for anything to get through, and the and the decisions are so inconsistent.
- 28:26SPEAKER_03: So I was worried that we weren't even gonna see him until like Big 12 play started.
- 28:29SPEAKER_03: If we were lucky, that's what how my brain was working.
- 28:32SPEAKER_03: But I'm glad to see him out there.
- 28:33SPEAKER_03: I'm sure he misses the USA whenever he's playing on that Sal Padre basketball court as his comeback.
- 28:39SPEAKER_03: But no, you're like you said, immediate impact player coming back, and it did take us a while to pull away from incarnate word.
- 28:45SPEAKER_03: They incarnate word was making their shots, man.
- 28:47SPEAKER_03: And it was it will they they they really penetrated our defense in a way that wasn't expected, but the final score does show that we did eventually pull away.
- 28:56SPEAKER_03: What was it like 10 minutes into the second half?
- 28:59SPEAKER_03: We finally started just pounding them.
- 29:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, we ended up winning by 22, so it wasn't like you know, we it was a close game, but they definitely gave us a scare there for the first portion of that game.
- 29:10SPEAKER_04: Uh, I mean, they made everything, they had a very, very uncharacteristic shooting performance from uh incarnate word.
- 29:17SPEAKER_04: They were just throwing them in.
- 29:19SPEAKER_04: I mean, uh, you know, this team is not very good.
- 29:21SPEAKER_04: I think they're 0-4 now, so uh it's not a good team, and we played tight, but uh there's gonna be, you know, it's gonna take a while for this team.
- 29:29SPEAKER_04: It really is.
- 29:30SPEAKER_04: We have a whole bunch of new players.
- 29:31SPEAKER_04: We just got Tarren Shannon back.
- 29:33SPEAKER_04: I mean, our spacing has been an issue to start the year.
- 29:37SPEAKER_04: You know, guys are are learning to play with each other, learning to mold and mesh and uh go to your right spot and everything like that while still, you know, getting yours.
- 29:45SPEAKER_04: You know, you could see Terrence Shannon had had some trouble uh, you know, finding his spots and finding, you know, he's not he didn't play with Kevin O'Banner before, he hadn't played with Bryson Williams before, you know.
- 29:55SPEAKER_04: And so um he's learning that and and Kevin McCullers in this new point guard role.
- 30:00SPEAKER_04: So it's gonna take this team a while.
- 30:02SPEAKER_04: And I, you know, don't expect them to be 100% right away.
- 30:06SPEAKER_04: I wouldn't expect this, even this lineup rotation.
- 30:08SPEAKER_04: Mark Adams has a big uh a big job in front of him to figure out uh you know how to allocate these minutes in the right way.
- 30:15SPEAKER_04: And I wouldn't expect it until at least a good portion in the Big 12 play for us to get our solid rotation in.
- 30:21SPEAKER_03: And in like and like you said, the bit of credit due to incarnate word, you know, having a good game, you know, college basketball is different to from college football in the fact that the little guy is a threat, they're always a threat, and much more so than college football.
- 30:34SPEAKER_03: Um, but it there's a there's a reason why the March Bandis is as fun as it is with those Cinderella teams.
- 30:39SPEAKER_03: So incarnate word can jump up and beat you uh on a certain day.
- 30:43SPEAKER_03: So I'm glad that we didn't let that happen.
- 30:46SPEAKER_03: But also, is is Daniel Boccio the best basketball player to ever step on the basketball court?
- 30:52SPEAKER_04: Or dude, what a performance, man.
- 30:54SPEAKER_04: We he came in there and he was the difference.
- 30:56SPEAKER_04: Like we some we once he came in in the second half, that was when we just pulled away, and he was fantastic.
- 31:02SPEAKER_04: And I did not like I didn't expect him to be as impactful as he was.
- 31:07SPEAKER_04: I thought, you know, Daniel Bacho, he's a he's another uh younger, really big guy.
- 31:12SPEAKER_04: We've had those plenty of times here at Texas Tech, but he's different, dude.
- 31:15SPEAKER_04: He's actually may find his way uh onto the team with with some rotation minutes because eight points and eight boards had those blocks, putbacks.
- 31:24SPEAKER_04: I mean, he was all over the floor.
- 31:26SPEAKER_03: And I like that you brought that up because uh, you know, at the beginning of the season, when we were previewing this, we're like, oh, you know, he's he's a tall depth piece that probably won't see the court basically at all.
- 31:35SPEAKER_03: So I like coming seeing him coming out and making statements.
- 31:38SPEAKER_03: He's gonna be a fan favorite.
- 31:39SPEAKER_03: And I just saw that tech just posted a uh a game announcement in December, and they used him as the as the main player in the graphic.
- 31:46SPEAKER_03: So you know, he's getting some hype around him.
- 31:49SPEAKER_03: We love the tall Frenchman, so it was a ton of fun, man.
- 31:53SPEAKER_03: Uh, and I like I said, I'm glad we we we've we've gone in and we're undefeated so far.
- 31:57SPEAKER_03: Uh, next we got Omaha uh back home.
- 32:00SPEAKER_03: So it's it's hopefully we can see this team meld more and more now that we have pretty much every player that we're gonna have, so we can get everybody melding before things get serious.
- 32:08SPEAKER_04: Well, and this is a good thing too about getting Terren Shannon back when we did, because I mean we're getting him now with three games before we start actually playing some good opponents.
- 32:16SPEAKER_04: So, you know, he's gonna get his spacing in, he's gonna get learned to play with some of these guys against some weaker opponents.
- 32:22SPEAKER_04: But once December comes, man, that's when it heats up.
- 32:25SPEAKER_04: I mean, we're first.
- 32:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we're playing Providence at Providence, we're going to Madison Square Garden playing Tennessee, and then we're playing Gonzaga, the number one team in the nation in Phoenix in a neutral site game.
- 32:37SPEAKER_04: So, you know, the we're gonna start getting some respect if we start winning those games.
- 32:42SPEAKER_04: You know, we fell in the A people this week basically because we haven't played anybody.
- 32:46SPEAKER_04: Uh, I would argue that we're better than most of the teams that are, or at least a lot of the teams that got votes more votes than we did.
- 32:54SPEAKER_04: But um, you know, I I can I can totally understand people not really batting an eye at Texas Tech right now because we haven't played anybody, and that's fair.
- 33:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 33:02SPEAKER_03: And it gives us something to work towards, too.
- 33:04SPEAKER_03: You know, a chip on the shoulder, you know, nothing is given, nothing where we don't deserve anything kind of thing.
- 33:09SPEAKER_03: And um, it's it's just a great thing because in this offense is gonna be a difference maker.
- 33:13SPEAKER_03: So I'm excited to see how this unfolds.
- 33:15SPEAKER_03: We'll get up there in the rankings.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: I'm not worried about it.
- 33:18SPEAKER_03: Um, and man, I'm I'm excited to start seeing some real competition, but obviously seeing these next couple cupcakes and quotation marks will obviously obviously still be fun to watch too.
- 33:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, that Tennessee game, I think they're 15th right now.
- 33:31SPEAKER_04: Gonzaga, number one, and even Providence is solid.
- 33:35SPEAKER_04: They're the you know, they've been kind of down the last few years in the big east, but uh I think they're I think they're undefeated right now.
- 33:41SPEAKER_04: So, um, you know, Providence looking to be a pretty decent team this year in the uh Big 12 Big East challenge.
- 33:47SPEAKER_04: That's something newer that started up in the past couple of years that I really like.
- 33:50SPEAKER_04: I like the conference challenges, man.
- 33:52SPEAKER_04: They're always fun too.
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 33:54SPEAKER_03: The Big 12 SEC challenge is really fun too, and uh they'll probably pick up some steam whenever OU and UT go over there, so they'll they'll get even spicier.
- 34:01SPEAKER_04: So yeah, I didn't even think about that.
- 34:03SPEAKER_04: That'll be wild.
- 34:04SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, man, that's what I had on basketball.
- 34:07SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, just continue to dominate like we have been.
- 34:10SPEAKER_04: I think we're winning by an average of like 24 and a half points in these first four games.
- 34:14SPEAKER_04: So we're getting the job done.
- 34:15SPEAKER_04: Still got a lot to figure out, but I think uh coaching.
- 34:18SPEAKER_03: Scoring's not an issue.
- 34:19SPEAKER_04: No, no, offensively, offensively, we're just fine.
- 34:23SPEAKER_04: Um, need need to work on the defense a little bit, but um uh yeah, man, let's move on uh from basketball.
- 34:29SPEAKER_04: Let's move to the uh talk and tech breakdown where we talk about some of the smaller sports going on around campus, but we need to talk some football commits first to start off the breakdown.
- 34:39SPEAKER_04: Um, we got I think three more commits uh since we last talked to y'all, uh, all on the football side, three-star linebacker Ty Kana coming in, class of 2022.
- 34:51SPEAKER_04: Uh, he's coming out of Katie.
- 34:52SPEAKER_04: Um, he's a bullet from what I've seen, uh, an absolute missile uh as a linebacker, hits hard.
- 34:59SPEAKER_04: Uh, and he's coming from one of the you know biggest Texas high schools in the nation.
- 35:03SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's this dude's this dude's a fireball, and I'm excited to get him on campus.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: And there's a there's a precedent that's been set unofficially with linebackers at Texas Tech.
- 35:12SPEAKER_03: So I we expect a lot of that position now, and it looks like he's gonna be a good get for it.
- 35:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt.
- 35:18SPEAKER_04: Uh, next up is three-star offensive lineman Eric Gray.
- 35:21SPEAKER_04: Uh joining he is the the current teammate with three-star O lineman Caden Carr, who just committed to tech.
- 35:28SPEAKER_04: Uh, both of them are coming out of Amarillo.
- 35:30SPEAKER_04: He's gonna be class of 2022.
- 35:32SPEAKER_04: Uh, this is big time.
- 35:33SPEAKER_04: It's another O-line, another three-star.
- 35:35SPEAKER_04: We need so much help on that side, on that unit.
- 35:38SPEAKER_04: So uh get it, Joey Maguire, get as many offensive linemen as you possibly can, please.
- 35:44SPEAKER_04: We need so much help.
- 35:45SPEAKER_03: It's really cool to see these recruits recruit each other too at their at their prospective high schools.
- 35:50SPEAKER_03: You know, they're really selling each other on coming to Texas Tech, and that's cool to see.
- 35:54SPEAKER_03: And I love Joey Maguire really selling hashtag the West TexasTough and actually recruiting West Texas.
- 35:59SPEAKER_03: Matt Wells was saying he was, but obviously he wasn't.
- 36:02SPEAKER_03: So it's it's good to see us getting the picks of West Texas.
- 36:06SPEAKER_03: There's no reason as for us to not be the official team of West Texas and have those players want to come to Texas Tech.
- 36:12SPEAKER_03: So that's great news.
- 36:14SPEAKER_04: We need to own Amarillo, Abilene, all that good stuff, you know.
- 36:17SPEAKER_04: Yes, just own it with those high schools.
- 36:20SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, the the last recruit that just came in today, actually, uh Calvin Simpson Hart, he's an unranked quarterback out of Waxa cornerback, I should say, out of Waxahatchie.
- 36:32SPEAKER_04: Um, this the this type of recruit is what more of what I expected immediately.
- 36:37SPEAKER_04: Uh, but then Joey Maguire's out here just grabbing three and four stars.
- 36:41SPEAKER_04: But uh, you know, this is the type of thing, and I was talking to you about this earlier.
- 36:45SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, I know he's unranked, he's a class 2023 guy.
- 36:49SPEAKER_04: So uh, you know, we could potentially see uh some stars pop up during uh next football season or everything, everything like that.
- 36:55SPEAKER_04: But uh, you know, we hired Joey Maguire because of his connections in the high school football ranks.
- 37:02SPEAKER_04: Uh and you know, if one of these coaches runs across a kid on the end of their program that is not really sought after, but they know what they can bring to the table or what they could potentially bring to the table, you know, Joey Maguire is going to be one of their first calls.
- 37:15SPEAKER_04: And so to lock down this type of guy who may or may not work out, we don't know.
- 37:20SPEAKER_04: He's unranked, but you know, we've seen a ton of players that are overlooked and and just not looked at at all uh in the high school football ranks and you know, get get some of these hidden gems.
- 37:31SPEAKER_04: I think uh Joey's the guy for that.
- 37:32SPEAKER_03: And that's been a part of Baylor's success is getting these kinds of kids.
- 37:35SPEAKER_03: So I mean, there's no reason not to trust him, like just because he doesn't have a bunch of stars next to his name doesn't mean he he doesn't bring value to our team.
- 37:43SPEAKER_03: And I know we definitely need some new backs in there, so it'll be great to see what this kid can bring.
- 37:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he's I mean, you can tell he's focusing on the offensive line and the defense.
- 37:52SPEAKER_04: That's in Joey McGuire, and that's the two glaring points for us uh right now.
- 37:56SPEAKER_04: So um, yeah, those are the three recruits that we've got.
- 37:59SPEAKER_04: We hopefully have some more on the way.
- 38:01SPEAKER_04: I know that a couple TCU offensive linemen uh just decommitted as well.
- 38:06SPEAKER_04: Uh, they just took an official visit to Texas Tech.
- 38:09SPEAKER_04: There could be some correlation there.
- 38:10SPEAKER_04: Who knows?
- 38:11SPEAKER_04: I don't know, but uh, we'll keep an eye out and we'll keep y'all updated on Twitter and everything like that.
- 38:16SPEAKER_04: Um, with all that recruiting news.
- 38:18SPEAKER_04: So uh let's move on to volleyball because that has been the hottest team on campus.
- 38:24SPEAKER_04: Four straight wins for the ladies.
- 38:26SPEAKER_04: They are now 17 and 10 overall.
- 38:29SPEAKER_04: Let's go just swept TCU and West Virginia.
- 38:32SPEAKER_04: Uh West Virginia was in Morgantown too.
- 38:34SPEAKER_04: So we go to their house and sweep them.
- 38:37SPEAKER_04: Uh currently we're fourth in the Big 12.
- 38:39SPEAKER_04: That's much better than the last couple years.
- 38:41SPEAKER_04: Um, next up, we got a two-match series with the Longhorns in Lubbock.
- 38:46SPEAKER_04: And Texas is very good.
- 38:48SPEAKER_04: They're first in the Big 12.
- 38:50SPEAKER_04: They're always a great volleyball school, but uh, we're we're getting hot at the right time, man.
- 38:54SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm excited.
- 38:55SPEAKER_04: This volleyball team looks good.
- 38:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm loving the momentum, man.
- 38:58SPEAKER_03: Especially this is the best time to start peaking is at the end of the season, you know, looking looking past it.
- 39:02SPEAKER_03: So love the progress we're making.
- 39:04SPEAKER_03: Definitely something to look forward to in the coming seasons as well, because the volleyball team has been struggling these past few years.
- 39:09SPEAKER_03: So it's good to see us actually be turning a corner.
- 39:12SPEAKER_03: That's all that's what's what you want.
- 39:13SPEAKER_03: It's what you want to see Avenue staff and stuff.
- 39:15SPEAKER_03: So this is great.
- 39:16SPEAKER_04: No doubt.
- 39:17SPEAKER_04: You got the uh you got the upset win from Baylor this year, too.
- 39:19SPEAKER_04: And Baylor's the top team in the country.
- 39:21SPEAKER_04: So hey, maybe we can pull off some magic in Lubbock, magic in the USA, go uh beat the horns down.
- 39:27SPEAKER_04: Uh, I think they only have one loss on the season right now, so they are a tough opponent by all means.
- 39:32SPEAKER_04: But uh, you know, wish them luck as the season finishes, and hopefully we'll get that uh postseason bid and do all that good stuff.
- 39:40SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 39:41SPEAKER_04: But um, yeah, let's move on to uh women's basketball.
- 39:45SPEAKER_04: Uh, talk about undefeated three and oh women's basketball.
- 39:49SPEAKER_04: Uh OT win against Lamar uh in their last game.
- 39:52SPEAKER_04: Uh, you don't really like to see that, don't really like to see us going uh down to the wire against Lamar, but uh, you know, this kind of stuff happens.
- 39:59SPEAKER_04: Uh Krista Gerlich in her second year.
- 40:01SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, we're still getting the team together.
- 40:03SPEAKER_04: Vivian Gray played for the first time.
- 40:05SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, uh obviously our best.
- 40:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, she did.
- 40:09SPEAKER_04: Uh, best player on our team.
- 40:11SPEAKER_04: Um, hopefully this game was more of a fluke, but um, like I said, Vivian Gray back.
- 40:15SPEAKER_04: I mean, she she willed us to win that game.
- 40:19SPEAKER_03: That Bulger beat her to tie the game was Chef's kiss.
- 40:22SPEAKER_04: Sent us into OT with that nice play and then hit a couple big shots in the overtime period uh to give us the win.
- 40:29SPEAKER_04: Uh, she did tweak her ankle again uh towards the end of the game.
- 40:32SPEAKER_04: Apparently, she said in the post-game presser she's gonna be all right, uh, no structural damage or anything like that.
- 40:37SPEAKER_04: So she may sit out a game or two, but uh, you know, not nothing as bad as what it could have been.
- 40:42SPEAKER_03: So she's different, so we definitely need her back.
- 40:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt.
- 40:46SPEAKER_04: Um, Riley McKinney was named Big 12 freshman of the week, uh, 17 and a half points a game uh this week while shooting 42 from three.
- 40:54SPEAKER_04: So we got another good uh another good couple uh couple girls on this team that are really looking to make an offensive impact.
- 41:00SPEAKER_04: Uh she's a sniper, man.
- 41:02SPEAKER_04: She knocks them down.
- 41:02SPEAKER_04: I got to watch uh a good amount of that first half of the Lamar game, and it was it was really nice to see.
- 41:08SPEAKER_04: I mean, the the ball was moving.
- 41:09SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, we were playing some pretty decent defense.
- 41:12SPEAKER_04: So uh, you know, three and oh, undefeated, can't get better than that.
- 41:16SPEAKER_04: Right where we want to be.
- 41:18SPEAKER_04: No more of that.
- 41:19SPEAKER_04: Matt Wells is out of here.
- 41:21SPEAKER_04: Matt Wells is way out of here.
- 41:23SPEAKER_04: We're not doing that anymore.
- 41:24SPEAKER_04: Um, but the last thing I had on the talk of tech breakdown, uh, we had some uh we had some Texas Tech Legends introduced into the Hall of Fame class of 2021.
- 41:36SPEAKER_04: Texas Tech Hall of Fame uh got six of our legends in there now.
- 41:39SPEAKER_04: Uh Michael Crabtree, one of those you may recognize.
- 41:42SPEAKER_04: Uh Graham Harrell, another one you may recognize.
- 41:45SPEAKER_04: Uh, and then uh Ronald Ross, uh DeAndre Carter, uh Brooke Lawrence, and Jason Totman.
- 41:52SPEAKER_04: Uh, so we got six great Red Raiders, all timers that are now uh officially in the Texas Tech Hall of Fame.
- 41:58SPEAKER_03: Always good to see them get their dues.
- 42:00SPEAKER_03: And those first two guys you mentioned, I don't know much about them, but I'm sure they contributed a lot.
- 42:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, yeah, I mean, some people have talked about it.
- 42:09SPEAKER_04: Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree, Steven.
- 42:11SPEAKER_04: That was the joke.
- 42:12SPEAKER_04: No, and I know people have talked, I was going along with the joke and gave me a little time there.
- 42:18SPEAKER_04: But let it simmer.
- 42:20SPEAKER_04: It's ruined now.
- 42:21SPEAKER_04: Whatever.
- 42:22SPEAKER_04: The joke's been blown up.
- 42:24SPEAKER_04: The joke's been blown.
- 42:25SPEAKER_04: That's it.
- 42:26SPEAKER_04: It's over.
- 42:27SPEAKER_04: Uh, but no, congrats to all six of these Red Raiders, they're legends through and through in their respective sports.
- 42:32SPEAKER_04: Uh, gotta love it, gotta love the Hall of Fame class growing.
- 42:35SPEAKER_04: Uh, but let's move on to uh we have a we have a pretty, you know, pretty famous holiday coming up here this week um in Thanksgiving.
- 42:43SPEAKER_04: So we have classic.
- 42:44SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah, we have some Thanksgiving talk.
- 42:46SPEAKER_04: Uh we went on the pod uh an episode or two ago, and uh, you know, I I shouted Thanksgiving doesn't get its due, you know, it's gotta get its due.
- 42:56SPEAKER_04: Christmas overshadows it a lot of the time, but I love Thanksgiving, I love everything about it.
- 43:02SPEAKER_04: So, Tristan, we're gonna give our top three uh Thanksgiving sides.
- 43:06SPEAKER_04: We're gonna talk a little bit about how we celebrate, how we want to ask y'all how y'all celebrate everything like that.
- 43:12SPEAKER_04: So, Tristan, give me your number three favorite side for Thanksgiving.
- 43:17SPEAKER_03: My number three, bottom the bottom of my best is yes, cranberry sauce.
- 43:21SPEAKER_03: Oh, I'm see because this is this is what I do with cranberry sauce is I take the cranberry sauce and I put it on the turkey.
- 43:30SPEAKER_03: It's actually an elite move because you get that salty, you get the salty savory with the sweet.
- 43:35SPEAKER_03: It were in the tart, it works out, man.
- 43:37SPEAKER_03: That's why I love cranberry sauce.
- 43:39SPEAKER_03: I'm not just sitting here eating cranberry sauce by itself, but I put that bad boy on the turkey and it just works, man.
- 43:45SPEAKER_03: I I'm all in on that.
- 43:46SPEAKER_04: Do y'all do the out of the can, or what do y'all do?
- 43:49SPEAKER_04: I eat with the cranberry, you know.
- 43:50SPEAKER_04: Honestly, I don't know.
- 43:51SPEAKER_04: I see it and I scoop it.
- 43:53SPEAKER_04: That's what I do.
- 43:54SPEAKER_04: Okay, okay, fair.
- 43:55SPEAKER_04: No, we're just straight out of the can.
- 43:56SPEAKER_04: I'm not a hater of cranberry sauce by any means.
- 43:59SPEAKER_04: You know, I'll just A little bit on my plate, but there's just I'm not gonna put it in my top ones, you know.
- 44:05SPEAKER_04: Cranberry sauce isn't like an elite side for me, but I'm also not a hater because I know there are haters of the cranberry out there.
- 44:12SPEAKER_03: It gets a lot of hate, it really does, but it's a staple of Thanksgiving, you know.
- 44:15SPEAKER_03: You gotta at least kind of give the respect that it that it's due.
- 44:17SPEAKER_03: Um, because it was between that and gravy, gravy is falling into the honorable mention because I'm putting gravy on pretty much freaking everything else, so sure.
- 44:23SPEAKER_03: That's just kind of how it goes.
- 44:25SPEAKER_03: So, what's number three for you?
- 44:26SPEAKER_04: Number three is sweet potato casserole for me.
- 44:29SPEAKER_04: I love sweet potatoes, I'm in on that.
- 44:33SPEAKER_04: Love them, and then of course, yes, we put the marshmallow on top, we flambe that crap, it looks great.
- 44:41SPEAKER_04: The sweet potatoes are a big big time part of what I love about that.
- 44:44SPEAKER_03: Oh, yes.
- 44:45SPEAKER_03: No, I I 100% agree.
- 44:47SPEAKER_03: That's my number two.
- 44:48SPEAKER_03: So, can I I'm just gonna go bounce off with you?
- 44:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, sure.
- 44:51SPEAKER_03: I do like the marshmallows on it, but it's not necessarily needed.
- 44:54SPEAKER_03: I also like it when they put like the pecans or nuts on it as well with some brown sugar.
- 44:58SPEAKER_03: I'm all in on that.
- 44:59SPEAKER_03: I'm in on the yams.
- 45:00SPEAKER_03: I I get down, I get down with the sweet potatoes.
- 45:02SPEAKER_03: They're they're definitely one of my favorite parts is Thanksgiving as well.
- 45:06SPEAKER_04: Oh, I load up.
- 45:07SPEAKER_04: We'll get to pecans later, but no, no, it's it's fantastic.
- 45:13SPEAKER_04: I love the sweet potatoes in every way.
- 45:15SPEAKER_04: I think it adds, you know, everything's more savory, more salty.
- 45:18SPEAKER_04: And then you come in with some of those sweet potatoes or some of those cranberries and just sweeten it up a little bit.
- 45:23SPEAKER_04: Gotta love it.
- 45:24SPEAKER_04: Um, my that was your number two, my number three, my number two now.
- 45:29SPEAKER_04: Green bean casserole.
- 45:30SPEAKER_04: I love green bean casserole.
- 45:32SPEAKER_04: Hell yeah.
- 45:33SPEAKER_04: I freaking love it.
- 45:34SPEAKER_04: It's like one of my favorite parts about Thanksgiving because you never eat it, too.
- 45:39SPEAKER_04: Like you never like, no one's making green bean casserole outside.
- 45:42SPEAKER_03: Like sweet potatoes, exactly.
- 45:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 45:44SPEAKER_04: But you know, you can have baked sweet potatoes and stuff like that at night.
- 45:47SPEAKER_03: Sweet potato prize, yeah.
- 45:48SPEAKER_04: Like at steak restaurants, I'll usually get like a baked sweet potato or something if it's offered.
- 45:53SPEAKER_04: It's still not common.
- 45:54SPEAKER_04: No, it's not, it's not common by any means, but you are never eating green bean casserole outside of Thanksgiving.
- 46:00SPEAKER_04: So I love it too.
- 46:02SPEAKER_04: I love it.
- 46:03SPEAKER_04: I I think it's fantastic.
- 46:04SPEAKER_04: Uh, the cream of mushroom, uh, the cream of chicken mixed in there with the green beans and getting all that salty, uh, the fried crispy onions.
- 46:12SPEAKER_04: Love oh, yes, love that overloaded.
- 46:15SPEAKER_03: Man, I guess we're on each other's same wavelength here because that's my number one.
- 46:19SPEAKER_04: Oh my gosh, okay.
- 46:20SPEAKER_03: I'm just gonna jump in with this conversation.
- 46:22SPEAKER_03: Whatever you asked me, I was like, no, sure.
- 46:25SPEAKER_03: Number one, I get it.
- 46:26SPEAKER_03: And no, you're totally right.
- 46:27SPEAKER_03: It's it comes around once a year, and you take something that's good for you and you make it really fatty and unhealthy for you, and make it horrible for you.
- 46:34SPEAKER_03: I'm all about that.
- 46:35SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm in on that, but I'm I am totally with you.
- 46:38SPEAKER_03: Green bean casserole is a move for me.
- 46:40SPEAKER_03: That is my number one side for Thanksgiving.
- 46:43SPEAKER_04: Fantastic.
- 46:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you and me would probably plow down the entire dish, yes, if it was offered.
- 46:48SPEAKER_04: Um, my number one though, uh it's a classic, it's it's the mashed potatoes and gravy.
- 46:53SPEAKER_04: Oh, I'm disappointed in that.
- 46:54SPEAKER_04: It's it's I'm sorry, it's it's I get probably more mashed potatoes than I get of anything, uh, just because, and it's it's the specific type of gravy that my family uses.
- 47:06SPEAKER_04: I am a massive brown gravy over white gravy guy.
- 47:11SPEAKER_04: I am, and brown gravy is what's served on Thanksgiving.
- 47:14SPEAKER_04: And my dad makes it, he he simmers the the turkey neck all night and then and then makes the gravy out of that, and it's just amazing.
- 47:22SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's unbelievable.
- 47:24SPEAKER_04: And I just plow down these buttery, delicious, salty mashed potatoes with this gravy, and it's my all it's my favorite side.
- 47:32SPEAKER_04: I mean, I know it's basic, I know it's you know the number one side of Thanksgiving, but it's it's unit's unmatched.
- 47:38SPEAKER_03: Look at the I I could daydream about this gravy you've described to me all day.
- 47:42SPEAKER_03: It sounds spectacular, and I put the gravy on everything.
- 47:45SPEAKER_03: I just it goes on pretty much everything that's on my plate, yeah.
- 47:49SPEAKER_03: But I can't agree with you on mashed potatoes because it's not special to Thanksgiving whatsoever.
- 47:55SPEAKER_03: You're gonna find mashed potatoes with a crap load of basic dishes you can eat all year round.
- 48:00SPEAKER_03: It's a very, very common comfort food.
- 48:02SPEAKER_03: I'm not against mashed potatoes, but I'm scooping up more sweet potatoes and green bean casserole and all that more so because that's Thanksgiving.
- 48:11SPEAKER_03: Like this is rare.
- 48:12SPEAKER_03: I'm getting this rare food on my plate because I can get mashed potatoes any other time.
- 48:16SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna have a scoop, but it's not gonna be a priority.
- 48:20SPEAKER_04: It's it's more about the combination of the specific Thanksgiving gravy with the mashed potatoes because I don't get that gravy vessel, exactly, exactly.
- 48:28SPEAKER_04: And it's a great vessel at that, you know, freaking buttery, salty, delicious potatoes.
- 48:34SPEAKER_04: Give me all that, but um, yeah, do you have some honorable mentions?
- 48:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, my honorable I don't know if gravy or cranberry sock or cranberry sauce really count as sides.
- 48:43SPEAKER_03: I just thought you might perhaps if there's gonna fall a category, it's gonna be that.
- 48:46SPEAKER_03: But gravy is also my honorable mention.
- 48:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, I love like you're just saying, gravy.
- 48:50SPEAKER_03: I don't discriminate.
- 48:51SPEAKER_03: I love both white and brown gravies.
- 48:53SPEAKER_03: Um, so I'm all over that as well.
- 48:55SPEAKER_03: And you know, I like stuffing, but I think it's a little overhyped.
- 49:00SPEAKER_03: I was just okay.
- 49:01SPEAKER_04: I was we're on the same, we have we enjoy the same Thanksgiving, it sounds like stuffing is bread mix, like it's fine, it's but why would I fill myself up with stuffing when I have all these other options?
- 49:15SPEAKER_04: And also, we have rolls.
- 49:18SPEAKER_04: The rolls are better than the stuffing.
- 49:20SPEAKER_04: That's my bread that I want.
- 49:22SPEAKER_04: I don't want just more bread mix with my Thanksgiving.
- 49:25SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's fine.
- 49:26SPEAKER_04: Like I said, if you love stuffing, cool.
- 49:28SPEAKER_04: I get it, it's specific to Thanksgiving, but it's just like, why?
- 49:32SPEAKER_04: It's just more bread.
- 49:34SPEAKER_03: There's so many other carbs that are better, they have more flavor that you can be eating right now instead and not you know, save your belly for that.
- 49:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I understand that perhaps you do a different sort of, you know, I know there's this this this regional split between stuffing and dressing, where they're kind of like this in and they're like the same thing, but not the prepared.
- 49:53SPEAKER_03: And if you do something special with it, you know, like I know a lot of people will do something special with their stuffing, you know, stuff it in the turkey like classically, or or do something special with it like that, it kind of changes the game.
- 50:04SPEAKER_03: But normal, just straight up baked stuffing just doesn't do it for me.
- 50:08SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna I'll eat it.
- 50:09SPEAKER_03: Don't get me wrong, it's going on the plate.
- 50:10SPEAKER_03: I'm eating everything on the table, but sure it's it is a little over overhyped.
- 50:15SPEAKER_03: People love it.
- 50:16SPEAKER_04: Is there something that you don't like on thing on the Thanksgiving?
- 50:20SPEAKER_04: No, I'll eat literally all of it.
- 50:22SPEAKER_04: Okay, okay.
- 50:23SPEAKER_04: Is there something like specific that your family does that maybe you don't see from a lot of others?
- 50:28SPEAKER_03: No, but I would say something that my family doesn't do that's common, that's a surprise to me is mac and cheese.
- 50:35SPEAKER_03: You know, people talk about doing mac and cheese on Thanksgiving all the time, all the time, but that was never ever a thing in my gatherings.
- 50:42SPEAKER_04: Oh, okay, yeah.
- 50:43SPEAKER_04: No, we do mac and cheese.
- 50:44SPEAKER_04: Uh, we usually get a pretty, but you know, it's it's like what you said with the mashed potatoes, it's you know, it's not real specific.
- 50:50SPEAKER_04: You can get mac and cheese.
- 50:52SPEAKER_04: This usually I'll say it's a nicer mac and cheese.
- 50:55SPEAKER_04: I mean, I'm like a craft guy if I'm gonna do mac and cheese like on the daily.
- 50:59SPEAKER_03: Mac and cheese, dude.
- 51:00SPEAKER_04: This is like this is like oven-baked breadcrumbs on the top, mac and like really creamy mac and cheese.
- 51:07SPEAKER_04: Like, that's the good stuff that you get on Thanksgiving.
- 51:09SPEAKER_04: But uh, yeah, it's it's definitely not gonna be in my favorites just because I can get mac and cheese whenever.
- 51:15SPEAKER_03: What's what's the special Rodriguez dish?
- 51:18SPEAKER_04: We do the special dish we do, and it I'm not a big fan of it, to be honest, but we do uh we it's a dressing, it's a Mexican dressing uh that my that my grandma made because she had five kids and they weren't, you know, they weren't well off financially, so they had to find a way to feed everybody, and turkey was very expensive, and so they made this Mexican dressing.
- 51:41SPEAKER_04: And so I love the tradition of it, but it's just not very good, to be honest.
- 51:46SPEAKER_04: But it's it's ground beef, it's ground beef.
- 51:50SPEAKER_03: It's like a this is a weird start.
- 51:52SPEAKER_04: It's weird, it's weird.
- 51:54SPEAKER_04: It's it's ground beef mixed in with some celery and onions, and it's got like almost a taco seasoning on it, and it's just kind of what they had at the time, and it makes sense, you know, it helps feed people.
- 52:07SPEAKER_04: Ground beef is much cheaper than turkey, but yeah, that was just their tradition.
- 52:13SPEAKER_03: Um, I could see that I the dish a Mexican stuffing has potential for me.
- 52:17SPEAKER_03: I just don't think ground beef is the right protein if I'm gonna dissect this dish, you know, maybe like a chorizo or like a pork, like a carnitas sort of thing, maybe, or a chicken even might kind of make a difference.
- 52:28SPEAKER_03: But ground beef on that just it sounds like I'm eating a deconstructed taco.
- 52:33SPEAKER_04: It's because it was cheap.
- 52:34SPEAKER_04: That's why ground beef was chosen.
- 52:36SPEAKER_04: And so I understand, and so they just kind of make it because it was Nani's stuff, and you know, you got it, it's Nani's dressing, you just gotta do it, you gotta eat it.
- 52:42SPEAKER_04: But I I get like maybe a half scoop on my plate, yeah.
- 52:46SPEAKER_04: Just kind of you know, eat it for what it is.
- 52:48SPEAKER_04: It's just not it, it's nice to have something different, but it's just you know, not my favorite.
- 52:54SPEAKER_03: They so what do you not like at Thanksgiving?
- 52:57SPEAKER_03: You ask me this question, you're like, does there anything you don't eat?
- 52:59SPEAKER_03: I'm guessing you have an inverse of something you don't eat.
- 53:02SPEAKER_04: This may be something specific to just my family, too.
- 53:05SPEAKER_04: Uh, my Uncle Jerry's carrot salad is the worst thing I've ever eaten in my life.
- 53:11SPEAKER_04: It's carrot salad, it's it's literally just like shaved carrots mixed with like some grapes, and then he puts like a pound of salt in it.
- 53:21SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, Uncle Jerry, you don't have to bring this.
- 53:24SPEAKER_04: And it's more of just a joke in the family at this point because he's gonna bring the carrot salad, whether anybody eats it or not.
- 53:31SPEAKER_04: But everybody knows it's awful, so that's that's our tradition of just like the worst thing that's on the that's being served.
- 53:39SPEAKER_03: It sounds like it got this.
- 53:40SPEAKER_03: It sounds like it got this idea at like a wing shop, you know, a hot wing shop with the side of celery and carrots.
- 53:47SPEAKER_03: I don't know where he got it.
- 53:48SPEAKER_03: It's just like it's why don't why bring the carrot salad?
- 53:52SPEAKER_04: Don't bring the carrot salad.
- 53:53SPEAKER_03: I was expecting you to say it's kind of like a coleslaw.
- 53:55SPEAKER_03: I'm like, okay, I'm kind of getting this now, but it doesn't like it's a cold salad.
- 53:59SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's it's a little like a coleslaw if you just replace the cabbage with carrots.
- 54:03SPEAKER_04: I mean, but I don't know.
- 54:05SPEAKER_04: It's not it's not in drench it in salt.
- 54:08SPEAKER_04: That's how you make coleslaw.
- 54:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, not good, not good.
- 54:12SPEAKER_04: The carrot salad, I'm out on it.
- 54:15SPEAKER_04: I don't recommend it to anybody.
- 54:17SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, that that that's what I had in mind when I was asking that question.
- 54:21SPEAKER_03: My god.
- 54:22SPEAKER_03: All right, I have another I have a Thanksgiving question for you.
- 54:25SPEAKER_03: Uh, this is a big point of contention for a lot of people with the main protein of Thanksgiving.
- 54:29SPEAKER_03: Many people do both a turkey and a ham.
- 54:31SPEAKER_03: And so obviously a battle ensues of which is the better one.
- 54:34SPEAKER_03: Do you prefer the turkey or the ham?
- 54:37SPEAKER_04: Um, I we have both, so I thank goodness I don't have to choose.
- 54:41SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 54:42SPEAKER_04: But if I did, if I did have to choose, um, I'd I'd go turkey just because um I think turkey, if you make it right, is fantastic.
- 54:51SPEAKER_04: I think you know, my my dad, we usually make two turkeys every Thanksgiving, one in oven baked and one fried.
- 54:58SPEAKER_04: Um and he puts the fried turkey, he injects this jalapeno butter.
- 55:02SPEAKER_04: I've I brought it up on the pod before, and it's just utterly fantastic.
- 55:05SPEAKER_04: I mean, you know, cook it to perfection.
- 55:08SPEAKER_04: Put it, he's put in the air fryer the last few years because he got one of those Mondo giant air fryers that we put it in, and it works beautifully.
- 55:16SPEAKER_04: Um, I like all turkey though.
- 55:18SPEAKER_04: I think turkey's underrated.
- 55:19SPEAKER_04: I like turkey at barbecue joints.
- 55:21SPEAKER_04: I think the smoked turkey is usually fantastic.
- 55:24SPEAKER_04: One of the most underrated parts of barbecue.
- 55:26SPEAKER_04: Um, I'm a big turkey guy.
- 55:28SPEAKER_04: Turkey sandwiches, pretty yeah.
- 55:30SPEAKER_04: Oh, dude, nothing beats the the leftover Thanksgiving turkey sandwich.
- 55:33SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 55:34SPEAKER_03: That's for that's for sure.
- 55:35SPEAKER_04: It's no one percent.
- 55:36SPEAKER_03: I'm with team turkey.
- 55:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, I love ham too.
- 55:41SPEAKER_04: I'm not gonna I'm not gonna sit here and say ham is like that much worse, if worse at all.
- 55:47SPEAKER_04: But yeah, you know, turkey's special at Thanksgiving, too.
- 55:50SPEAKER_03: I agree.
- 55:52SPEAKER_04: 100%.
- 55:53SPEAKER_04: Um let's see.
- 55:55SPEAKER_04: I had one more thing, and you're gonna be mad.
- 55:58SPEAKER_04: Um, because we've had this discussion before.
- 56:00SPEAKER_04: If you follow us on Twitter, too many times brought it up.
- 56:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I know too long, but um pecan pie stinks.
- 56:06SPEAKER_04: It does.
- 56:07SPEAKER_03: You need to shut your mouth.
- 56:08SPEAKER_04: The worst part of Thanksgiving.
- 56:09SPEAKER_04: Pecan pie absolutely stinks.
- 56:11SPEAKER_03: It's the best pie provided at Thanksgiving.
- 56:14SPEAKER_03: I can't believe you're saying this.
- 56:15SPEAKER_03: It's it's the most it's like the most Thanksgiving pie out there.
- 56:18SPEAKER_04: This is the worst, it's the worst pie there is.
- 56:20SPEAKER_04: It's the it's not true.
- 56:22SPEAKER_03: It is.
- 56:23SPEAKER_03: Are you you really think pumpkin pie is better than pecan pie?
- 56:26SPEAKER_03: I think yeah, I think that's a trash opinion.
- 56:28SPEAKER_04: That's a wrong, that's an objective.
- 56:29SPEAKER_04: Your opinion's wrong here, my friend.
- 56:32SPEAKER_04: Uh no, pecans stink, just in general, pecans stink.
- 56:35SPEAKER_04: Pecans with any.
- 56:36SPEAKER_04: They do not, dude.
- 56:37SPEAKER_04: What is your deal right now?
- 56:38SPEAKER_04: They're nasty, they're gross.
- 56:40SPEAKER_04: That's my deal.
- 56:40SPEAKER_04: You are out of your mind.
- 56:42SPEAKER_04: I don't like pecans or gross.
- 56:44SPEAKER_04: Taste nuts in general.
- 56:45SPEAKER_04: It tastes like the ground.
- 56:47SPEAKER_04: Like, I don't want that.
- 56:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, no.
- 56:50SPEAKER_04: They're like slightly sweet.
- 56:51SPEAKER_03: No, they're not an earthy taste, but that's what nuts taste like.
- 56:55SPEAKER_03: They have a bit of an earthy taste.
- 56:56SPEAKER_04: No, I would take this is unbelievable.
- 56:59SPEAKER_04: Pumpkin, buttermilk, or literally any fruit pie over a pecan pie.
- 57:03SPEAKER_03: Give me any beef with the rest of these pies, but pecan pie is amazing, and it it deserves being crowned as Thanksgiving's pie.
- 57:12SPEAKER_03: It does, especially in Texas.
- 57:14SPEAKER_03: I'm glad you're Louisiana.
- 57:16SPEAKER_03: All right, disrespecting pecans like this.
- 57:18SPEAKER_04: Listen, Texas does two things wrong, and they it's just two things.
- 57:22SPEAKER_04: Texas is the best state there is, no, no doubt about that in my mind.
- 57:26SPEAKER_04: But the whole no beans in chili is wrong, and pecans are wrong.
- 57:31SPEAKER_04: That's that's it.
- 57:32SPEAKER_04: That's the only thing they do wrong.
- 57:34SPEAKER_03: I I I I'm okay with the bean opinion in the chili.
- 57:36SPEAKER_03: I don't, I I that's usually how beans and chili expectan chili to have, yeah.
- 57:41SPEAKER_03: But but the whole anti-pecan rhetoric is just unacceptable.
- 57:46SPEAKER_03: No, yeah, it's just spitting in the face of our state tree.
- 57:49SPEAKER_04: I'll die on that.
- 57:51SPEAKER_04: I don't even I don't even care if I'm 99 to one here because I know the majority like pecan pie.
- 57:57SPEAKER_04: I think it's disgusting, I think it's the worst part of Thanksgiving.
- 58:00SPEAKER_04: Trash opinion.
- 58:00SPEAKER_04: Nope, nope, it's it's objectively wrong.
- 58:03SPEAKER_03: That's how opinions work.
- 58:04SPEAKER_03: If it's wrong enough, it's objectively wrong.
- 58:06SPEAKER_04: If if I don't agree, then it's wrong.
- 58:07SPEAKER_03: So I speak in only facts, and you're speaking in only lies currently.
- 58:14SPEAKER_04: No, so that's my strongest opinion when it comes to Thanksgiving, and I know it's different, and I'm sorry if I've upset you.
- 58:22SPEAKER_04: Uh if you'll love that now and all your love for pecan pie.
- 58:26SPEAKER_04: Uh, and I'm not just speaking to you, Trist, so I'm talking to everybody here, but pecans stink.
- 58:31SPEAKER_03: They do, they're awful.
- 58:32SPEAKER_03: And we gotta move on from this because I can't take this anymore.
- 58:36SPEAKER_04: We'll move on, we'll move on from it.
- 58:38SPEAKER_04: Um, how do you make your turkey?
- 58:40SPEAKER_04: Do you do you do you do oven baked or oven baked, yeah?
- 58:43SPEAKER_03: Okay, my family doesn't ever fry it.
- 58:45SPEAKER_04: Right on, right on.
- 58:46SPEAKER_04: Maybe one of these days, one of these years, you know, if y'all are it, maybe y'all host it one of these years, try a fried turkey.
- 58:53SPEAKER_04: It's it'll change your life.
- 58:55SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm I I fried pretty much anything poultry-wise is probably gonna be better.
- 59:00SPEAKER_03: So I understand what what you're saying to me right now.
- 59:02SPEAKER_04: No doubt.
- 59:03SPEAKER_04: Just make it worse for you and it's more delicious.
- 59:06SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 59:06SPEAKER_04: I mean, that's the rule of food, just in general.
- 59:09SPEAKER_04: So uh let us know about your Thanksgiving opinions, guys.
- 59:13SPEAKER_04: You know, uh, reach out to us on Twitter and just say, hey, you know, at at talking tech pod that Steven guy's a piece of shit for thinking pecan pie is the worst thing about Thanksgiving.
- 59:23SPEAKER_03: You didn't need that pie opinion for that to be a fact anyway.
- 59:26SPEAKER_04: That's true, that's very true.
- 59:28SPEAKER_04: Uh, but yeah, let us know what you think, uh, your strongest opinions on Thanksgiving, uh, turkey or ham, uh, what kind of pie you like, all that sort of good stuff.
- 59:37SPEAKER_04: But um, let's move on.
- 59:38SPEAKER_04: I hope I hope all y'all enjoy Thanksgiving.
- 59:40SPEAKER_04: Everybody gets to see their family, everybody you know gets to sit down at the table for a good meal, hopefully, uh, for everybody.
- 59:45SPEAKER_04: So, y'all enjoy Thanksgiving.
- 59:47SPEAKER_04: We're gonna move on and finish this pod with Song of the Week like we do every week.
- 59:51SPEAKER_04: Uh, Tristan, you had this idea, so I'll let you explain it.
- 59:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that was actually originally my fiance's idea with the the big, big uh release of Adele's new album.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_03: You know, there's a lot of respect to Adele.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_03: She's an incredibly talented woman and she's had a very good career so far in her young life.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_03: So I thought, you know, with the release of a new album, it'd be a good time to re review her career and pick what our favorite songs in our catalog have been.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_03: You know, we're I know we're I'm definitely more of a country music guy, but I can appreciate the raw talent and her songwriting in general.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_03: So uh let's hear it, dude.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_03: What do you what do you got?
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_03: What do you got for your Adele song of the week?
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_04: You uh so I I like I like Adele.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_04: I'm not I'm not gonna like sit here and say I'm like the biggest fan of Adele.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_04: I'll like I I'll hardly put her on, but she does have a killer voice.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_04: I mean, her singing voice is utterly fantastic.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_04: Um, but the song I chose for my Adele song of the week is uh Rubber Has It by uh by Adele.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_04: I think this was off her 25 album.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_04: Um, but uh it's it's great, it's on the same album that Rolling in the Deep is on.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_04: Uh, it's a great, it's a great jam.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_04: Uh she did she it's kind of more up-tempo from other Adele songs, you know.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_04: It's like a nice little beat and a nice clapping going on throughout the whole song.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's got a little more of a bop to it.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_04: No doubt.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_04: So I I like that one the most, I think, of her.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_04: Uh, there's always the classics, and yours may be one of the classics, but uh yeah, rumor has it is my song of the week.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_02: Now Luma has it, she ain't got your love anymore.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_03: All right, that's a good one, man.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_03: That's a Bob.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_03: Uh, I'm gonna go with uh one of her ballads.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_03: It's a really popular one.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_03: I I understand that, but I do adore the songwriting and the story she tells in it.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_03: I think it's a pretty relatable song.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_03: Um, I'm gonna go with When We Were Young okay on her 25 album.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_03: It's I think it's a spectacular uh showing of songwriting in the ballot form.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_03: And I'm a sucker for a good ballad.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_03: That's my usually my favorite uh mode of music.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_03: So I that's that's definitely what I'm rolling with.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_05: My god, this reminds me of when we were young, yeah, no doubt.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_04: I uh yeah, that one's a classic.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_04: You know, if you you can't go wrong with one of her classics, like if you were to say, like rolling in the deep or set fire to the roof, you're like, I get it.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_04: You know, I'm not gonna judge you for it.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_04: It's it those are all great jams for sure.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, she's definitely she's definitely one of the better pop stars of our time.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_03: I'm definitely definitely, definitely gonna agree with that.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_04: Uh the one thing I will say about Adele is her her accent, and this is this this goes with with a lot, uh, you know, the Cockney sort of accent is I've never seen somebody sing so beautifully and talk so uh I don't know what word to describe.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_04: The accent's awful.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's awful.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_04: The with the with the way she talks, and you know, I to each their own.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_04: I know I get where you're from, and everything like that, but it's like the the crazy Boston accents, yeah, the crazy, like you know, all these crazy accents out there, and she's got the worst of the worst of the Cockney British redneck accent, yeah.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_03: 100%.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_03: She doesn't she does definitely does not have that cutesy kind of mild British accent, no.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_03: Um, but it it's definitely the full-blown you're yeah, you're in England.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_03: That's for sure.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_03: Accents, yeah.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_04: You're you're I know where you're from.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but so that that's definitely a funny contrast, but man, she could belt them out, that's for sure.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_04: No doubt.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_04: Uh also you know she's getting married to LeBron James's agent.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_04: They're getting married, but they're just dating.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_04: No, I think they're like engaged.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_04: Why I I had no idea about this, so I was like, when I saw Rich Paul and Adele like tie like uh get engaged or whatever, I was like, Rich Paul and Adele?
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_04: That's the most random duo I could ever think of in my life.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_04: Like the uh this big time sports agent and Adele.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_03: Like, what it's just like what Los Angeles dinner party did they meet at, you know?
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, seriously, yeah.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_04: What what party where all the superhero celebrities are at did they go to together?
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_04: But you know, I wish them the best.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_04: I just I didn't it was the weirdest couple, definitely one of the weirder couples I've seen.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_04: Um no doubt, but but yeah, man, I think that's gonna do it here um for this episode of Talk to Tech Pod.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, root root for root for football.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, hopefully we can pull off an upset against Baylor.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_04: Uh, not not expecting it by any means, but hey, if it happens, it happens.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_04: Uh, we're gonna end it off like we always do, uh, with some plugs.
