- 0:00Hey y'all, it's friendly. Welcome back to another episode
- 0:04on the podcast. I want to go into a little
- 0:08background before I go right into the story because before I
- 0:13even sat down for quiet time this morning, I went on a prayer
- 0:17walk and I believe is the Holy Spirit giving me this exact
- 0:21thing to pray. But I found myself asking God,
- 0:25would you help me realize more and more how much I've been
- 0:29forgiven so that it translates into how I can forgive and love
- 0:34others even more? And it was almost immediately
- 0:37that I heard the verse, whoever's forgiven little loves
- 0:42little. And this is from Luke 747.
- 0:45That verse honestly convicted me because frankly, I do not want
- 0:51to live unaware of the great, deep and wide forgiveness that
- 0:57I've received. I want to grasp it more so that
- 1:00it shapes the way that I love and forgive those around me.
- 1:04So whenever I opened my Bible, my quiet time afterwards, and
- 1:08found myself in Matthew chapter 18, it felt like the Lord was
- 1:13telling me this is exactly why I had you praying.
- 1:17That and what I want to teach you today.
- 1:19So I'm going to read some of the verses verbatim, but I will be
- 1:23paraphrasing the parable for the sake of time because it's a
- 1:27little bit more lengthy, but we're going to start in verse 21
- 1:31and it'll end in 35. This is titled Jesus tells the
- 1:35parable of the unforgiving debtor.
- 1:39Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, Lord, how many times
- 1:43shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me?
- 1:46Up to seven times. And Jesus answered, I tell you
- 1:52not 7 times, but 77 times. OK, so then it goes into the
- 1:58parable and Jesus is telling a story about a king who is
- 2:02settling accounts with his servants.
- 2:04One survey is brought before him.
- 2:08He owes an unpayable debt. It's such a big debt that in the
- 2:12commentary it explains it was worth almost 20 years of daily
- 2:18labor and wages. So there's no realistic way to
- 2:21actually repay it in this moment.
- 2:24And for context, at this time the consequences were super
- 2:30serious for debt. You could be thrown into prison.
- 2:33You might have to sell your entire family into slavery or
- 2:37sell all of your possessions. So this servant, he falls to his
- 2:42knees and pleads for mercy before the king.
- 2:46But instead of punishment, we see the king so moved with
- 2:49compassion that he completely forgives the debt and lets the
- 2:53servant go. But literally moments later,
- 2:57that same servant leaves and finds yet another servant who
- 3:02owes him a smaller debt in comparison to what he initially
- 3:06owed. And when that man begs him for
- 3:08patience and forgiveness, the servant refuses and has him
- 3:13thrown into prison for his consequence.
- 3:15So this gets back to the king. He hears about this and he calls
- 3:19the forgiven servant in and he's like, I forgave you of all of
- 3:25your debt, of everything. Why did you not show mercy just
- 3:29as I showed you mercy? So I think this story is making
- 3:33it so clear that failing to forgive reveals a heart that
- 3:38never truly understood the mercy that it received.
- 3:42And for context, just to help with this story, why this was so
- 3:47radical is before telling this parable, Peter asked Jesus a
- 3:52question. And at the time, Jewish rabbis
- 3:56and teachers, they taught and believed that you only had to
- 4:00forgive someone three times, and after the third time, you were
- 4:05justified in holding it against them.
- 4:08So with Peter asking Jesus, OK, seven times, he thinks he's
- 4:14being generous because also seven in the Bible, it
- 4:17represents the number of completion and perfection.
- 4:22So Peter, I think thought he was going above and beyond.
- 4:27But Jesus responds, no, 77 times, AKA do not place a limit
- 4:33on forgiveness. So that's what makes this
- 4:36parable and story so powerful, because it shows the danger of
- 4:41receiving mercy and forgiveness without letting it transform
- 4:46your heart. So this passage, it's inviting
- 4:51us to reflect honestly. And I want you all to just think
- 4:54right now, how many times each day, even in small ways, have I
- 5:00missed the mark? Maybe it's in your thoughts, in
- 5:03your words, even reactions and responses to other people.
- 5:09And we also see in Lamentations 322 through 2023, it reminds us
- 5:16because of the Lord's great love, we are not consumed for
- 5:21His mercies never fail. They are new every morning,
- 5:26y'all. Every single day you wake up,
- 5:29there is a clean slate for you. And that perspective should
- 5:34change how we view forgiveness. And I realized because I was
- 5:40kind of wrestling with the same thing in my own thoughts, like
- 5:44forgiveness can raise real tension because you might think,
- 5:47well, I don't want to be taken advantage of.
- 5:49I don't want to be walked all over, or I want to use wisdom in
- 5:53this. But Scripture is talking about
- 5:56true repentance. And it's important to recognize
- 5:59that repentance, it's not just saying the right words.
- 6:04It's turning away from sin and your wrongdoing, and it's
- 6:08turning to God. This takes humility.
- 6:12It takes a changed heart and intentional efforts to grow in
- 6:17this. And that applies to others and
- 6:20to us. So we know growth takes time,
- 6:24accountability, and practice. I went into that yesterday.
- 6:27But when failure happens again, grace gives space for us to
- 6:32grow. And just to define grace for
- 6:35y'all, because I think it's helpful.
- 6:37In simple terms, it's God's undeserved kindness toward us.
- 6:42So here's the heart of the message, the core truth that I
- 6:45want to emphasize today. Fully grasping God's forgiveness
- 6:50toward you should result in a free and willing posture of
- 6:54forgiveness toward others. Jesus himself, he sets this
- 6:59standard because guys, while hanging on the cross, he has
- 7:04nails driven through his hands. He cries out, Father, forgive
- 7:11them, for they do not know what they're doing.
- 7:14This is Luke 2334. Let that image settle in for a
- 7:20second. It is so, so impactful and
- 7:26important. Not forgiving others.
- 7:29This places us outside the posture that Jesus invites us
- 7:33and calls us into because he loved radically and
- 7:37sacrificially. It will not always be easy by
- 7:41any means, but I do believe that oftentimes it's in those hard,
- 7:47hard moments of forgiveness that are the most challenging that
- 7:50Jesus is displayed through US most clearly and most vividly.
- 7:55So instead of asking yourself, do I have to forgive them?
- 8:01Y'all? What if we begin asking?
- 8:03I get to forgive them because of how God has forgiven me.
- 8:08It says in Romans 12/9 that love must be sincere.
- 8:13So forgiving with bitterness in your heart or resentment just to
- 8:17say that we did it. The bottom line is that is
- 8:21legalism because it's rule keeping.
- 8:23It's doing the right thing without a heart change.
- 8:27So true forgiveness, it starts by asking God to soften our
- 8:33hearts and to help us more deeply receive His love so that
- 8:38we can reflect it genuinely. So I'm going to move into prayer
- 8:43right now. Dear Father God.
- 8:48Thank you, Lord, for your mercy that you lavish on us and pour
- 8:54out again and again so often that it is more than we can even
- 9:01realize or fathom. Would you help us to see the
- 9:05depth of the forgiveness that you have given us through Jesus
- 9:09Christ, where our hearts might be guarded or calloused or
- 9:14hardened? Lord, would you soften them
- 9:18gently? Would you mold us into people
- 9:22who don't just speak forgiveness or empty words just to do it,
- 9:27but who truly demonstrate the love of Jesus through the way
- 9:32that we live and the way that we love others radically and
- 9:36sacrificially. May we behold you, Jesus, your
- 9:41sacrifice on that cross in our hearts, in our minds, every
- 9:46single day. We surrender this work in our
- 9:49hearts to you. We love you so, so much.
- 9:53We ask this all in your name, Jesus, Amen.
- 9:57All right, well, that is today's episode and praying for you guys
- 10:02that you can finish the week out strong and I will see you all in
- 10:06the next one. Bye.
