- 0:04This is living. Waters of Grace, the teaching
- 0:07ministry of Lewis Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary
- 0:10Chapel of Westmoreland County in Greensburg, PA.
- 0:15Now here's Pastor Lewis as he continues teaching through God's
- 0:18Word. We're not exempt in any way.
- 0:41Sometimes we can be spots in a love piece.
- 0:46Sometimes we can cause people to stumble with our behavior.
- 0:49Sometimes we can be like clouds without water.
- 0:53Sometimes we can not have fruit or not show fruit in our lives.
- 1:00But again, God is warning us and saying in the later times these
- 1:06things are going to be so. Have you ever attended a church
- 1:10service and felt as though the pastor's message was speaking
- 1:13directly to you? That is the conviction of the
- 1:16Holy Spirit at work in your life, guiding you to hear what
- 1:19you were meant to embrace. Today, Pastor Lewis wants to
- 1:23remind you that even with the teachings of the Bible are
- 1:26challenging to digest, it is God's way of inviting you to
- 1:30reflect on your own life and realign yourself with him.
- 1:35So take the time to listen, examine your heart, and trust
- 1:39that God is always there ready to guide you back to Him.
- 1:44Now here's Pastor Lewis in the book of Jude chapter 1 as he
- 1:48continues his message apostates describe.
- 1:52They have motives that are ungodly.
- 1:55They're looking at the opposite sex in ways that they should not
- 1:58because it's not their wives. They're looking at ways to take
- 2:03advantage, to be able to get more for themselves.
- 2:07And so when he says here that they're only serving, they do it
- 2:09without fear. They do it without reverence of
- 2:12God. They come among us without
- 2:14reverence of God, without respecting who God is, without
- 2:17having to all of God, not even fearful of the consequences of
- 2:25their of their behavior, of their hearts and conditions of
- 2:27their hearts. And they're serving only
- 2:30themselves. The Bible says that a pastor is
- 2:33supposed to feed the flock, but they serve themselves.
- 2:38They're not really looking to give you the truth of God's
- 2:41Word. They're looking to give you what
- 2:43will deceive you into giving more to them, get you to follow
- 2:49a doctrine that is Antichrist, to lead you away from the truth,
- 2:56to lead us away from the truth. And then I'm going to go to the
- 2:59next one. It says that they are clouds
- 3:01without water, carried about by the winds, The clouds without
- 3:05water, meaning that they are they, you know, they give the
- 3:08threat of rain. We don't have these kind of
- 3:12clouds until lately. We've been getting a lot of
- 3:16water here. Greensburg.
- 3:20But he's saying here that there are clouds without water.
- 3:24So it's like they, it's like a farmer, a farmer.
- 3:29One of the worst things for them is like when they're desperate
- 3:32for rain for their crops, one of the worst thing for them is look
- 3:36up in the sky and see a cloud that looks like it could bring
- 3:40rain, looks like it could promise rain, but then it blows
- 3:43away and nothing ever happens. They don't have their crops
- 3:47watered. It's the worst thing that can
- 3:51happen. It's the worst thing that can
- 3:52happen for a church to have someone teaching or preaching
- 3:58that gives the promise that they're going to give an A
- 4:01nourishing word, a word that's going to refresh, a word that's
- 4:04going to really speak to our spirit.
- 4:06And then it doesn't. It speaks to the flesh instead.
- 4:12We don't leave refreshed. We leave even more heavy because
- 4:16he just talked about all the things that he has that we don't
- 4:19talk about how to get things that we can attain all things of
- 4:24the flesh, not really speaking to our spirit.
- 4:29We need the water. We need the water to refresh us.
- 4:34You know, Jesus told Jesus told the the woman at the the well.
- 4:41He told her, he said, you know, if you knew the kind of person
- 4:45that was here, you knew who was here in front of you, you would
- 4:49be asking me for water because I would give you water that leads
- 4:54to everlasting life. But if you have someone that
- 4:59doesn't bring, that doesn't have substance in what it is that
- 5:04they're teaching because it's not coming from the word of God,
- 5:08then we're thirsty. We're left thirsty.
- 5:10We're left leaving wanting to be refreshed and not.
- 5:15And Jude is saying be careful of men who act like they're going
- 5:21to bring refreshing, A refreshing word and don't be
- 5:25careful of that. And then he goes on here and he
- 5:30and he talks about the autumn trees.
- 5:34He says they're like late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead,
- 5:41pulled up by the roots, laid autumn trees.
- 5:45And just as false teachers or clouds that fail to produce
- 5:48water, likewise they also fail to produce fruit in their own
- 5:52lives. They can't give us the word of
- 5:56God that will cause us to produce fruit.
- 5:59And we're supposed to be trees that produce fruit as
- 6:02Christians, as believers in Isaiah 61 and three, he said
- 6:07that we are trees of righteousness, the planting of
- 6:11the Lord, that he might be glorified.
- 6:18God is glorified by the fruit of our lives.
- 6:22And if I'm, if we are a, a, a Christian or believer that
- 6:27doesn't have fruit, then God is not glorified.
- 6:33And John 15, Jesus also spoke when he talked about himself
- 6:36being a true vine. He says if you abide in me and I
- 6:40in you, you will have much fruit, much fruit.
- 6:45But without me you can do nothing.
- 6:47And that's true. Without Him we can do nothing,
- 6:49and without His word we can do nothing.
- 6:53We can do nothing. We need the word of God.
- 6:57We need it. Men do not live by bread alone,
- 7:00but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
- 7:04That is the true manner that comes from heaven that nurtures
- 7:09us and feeds us. And he is the water he brings us
- 7:13the water that comes from heaven.
- 7:15And and, and Isaiah, he said, you know, just as the water
- 7:19comes down from the heavens and it doesn't return back there,
- 7:22but that it nourishes the ground where it it, it, it waters the
- 7:26ground and it brings forth the bud and that bud becomes seed
- 7:32and bread it produces. He said, so as my word, that
- 7:40comes forth out of my life, my word.
- 7:44So that is what brings the refreshing.
- 7:46That's what brings the fruit. That's what brings production is
- 7:52his word, his word, not mine. I could stand up here all day
- 7:57long and give you a bunch of stories that sounds interesting,
- 8:01but then you leave and somebody said, OK, but what did he
- 8:03preach? I don't know, but man, was he
- 8:05something. He was funny.
- 8:08OK, good. But what did he think?
- 8:09I don't know. That doesn't do us any good.
- 8:12That's not why we gather. We gather to hear the word of
- 8:15God. We gather to be refreshed by the
- 8:19word of God. We gather to be transformed by
- 8:22the word of God. We don't gather for stories.
- 8:26And then he said they were trees without fruit.
- 8:31Twice dead, twice dead. That means not only are they
- 8:35dead spiritually, but they're also going to be dead
- 8:37physically. They're twice dead and there's
- 8:41no connection, he said. It's pulled up by the roots.
- 8:44That means that these trees can never be connected.
- 8:47They're not connected to anything to ever have life.
- 8:52They're not connected to the vine, and because they're not
- 8:54connected to the vine, they die. Then he says they're raging
- 8:58waves of the sea, raging waves of the sea.
- 9:03It's a beautiful thing to be before the ocean.
- 9:05I think Clark right now is down there at the ocean.
- 9:08And I know that he loves looking out at the sea and, and we lied,
- 9:11you know, we, we love being at the ocean and looking at the
- 9:14water. I love looking at, at water
- 9:17anywhere. I like anybody of water, to be
- 9:19honest with you looking at it. I'm not so crazy about getting
- 9:21in it, but I do like to look at bodies of water.
- 9:26But the ocean is a very, it's a majestic thing to look at, you
- 9:29know, with the waves and the, and, and the way that it comes
- 9:32right up to the shore and it's a very majestic thing to look.
- 9:35It's very powerful thing to look at.
- 9:38But when you see a, but when you see the, the, the ocean, when
- 9:41you see the ocean when it's in a storm could be a very scary
- 9:45thing. The waves are obviously a lot
- 9:47higher, does a lot more damage. It's more dangerous, you know,
- 9:51for those who are out in boats in it.
- 9:55Obviously it is. But the thing that Jude is
- 9:59talking about here is when he said if foaming up, he says
- 10:03foaming up their own shame. When you walk on the beach after
- 10:08a storm, if you've ever walked on the beach after the storm,
- 10:13what you see is not pretty because the ocean brings up in
- 10:18that storm. It brings up all that dirt, all
- 10:21that, all the garbage that was in the ocean, it now washes up
- 10:25on the shore and it's so dirty. In fact, you can't even go in
- 10:28the water. They tell you don't even go in
- 10:29the water for a while after a storm because it's so dirty.
- 10:34It's, it's, it's a bunch of mire and, and, and, and filth.
- 10:38And a lot of that comes up on the shore.
- 10:40Well, this is what Jude is saying about false teachers.
- 10:43They said they rant and they wave and they and they give all
- 10:46this, all this, you know, this message.
- 10:49And it's just like ways because it, it looks good.
- 10:52It sounds good, but the only thing they're doing is bringing
- 10:56up their own shame. They're talking about their own
- 11:00life and their flesh and, and the things that they're
- 11:03interested in. And none of those things are
- 11:04spiritual. It's just bringing up their own
- 11:07shame. In fact, another quote that I
- 11:10found that I really, really enjoyed and this comes from
- 11:14Warren Wheresby, he says the true teachers of the word bring
- 11:18up treasures from the deep. False teachers only produce
- 11:23refuse. That means waste, garbage, trash
- 11:28and boast about what they should be ashamed of.
- 11:32Do you remember time in your life when you boast about things
- 11:36that we pop that would now we are ashamed of them?
- 11:39I can remember that talking about things and boasting about
- 11:44things that I should have been ashamed of.
- 11:47If you think back in your life, maybe some of you can relate
- 11:51boasting about those things. Or sometimes false teachers do
- 11:54the exact same thing. They boast about things that
- 11:57they should be ashamed of, foaming up their own shame.
- 12:02Isaiah 57 and 20 says, But the wicked are like the troubled sea
- 12:08when it it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt,
- 12:15the false teachers, they're like raging waves of the sea.
- 12:21And then he says here they're like wandering stars, for whom
- 12:27is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.
- 12:31Wandering stars for who is reserved the blackness of
- 12:35darkness forever. 1 is to fix stars is a shipments or a
- 12:42mariner. You know, it's their dream to
- 12:46see the stars. They can navigate by the stars
- 12:50because they're fixed. They're there.
- 12:52They give you direction, they give you guidance.
- 12:54But wandering stars like shooting stars and different
- 12:59things that you see in the heavens that shoot and they,
- 13:01they fizz up and then they fizzle out.
- 13:04You don't see them anymore. They call falling stars or
- 13:09whatever. You, you know, they, they, they
- 13:10call them when you see them and then they fizzle out.
- 13:13They're saying that's the same thing as a false teacher.
- 13:16They come in with a lot of romp and rave and noise, but
- 13:21eventually they fizzle out and then they go somewhere else.
- 13:25They go somewhere else, they wander.
- 13:26They just leave, go to another group of people that haven't
- 13:31heard them yet. I know this message sometimes
- 13:35can come across as wow, this is a real condemning message, but
- 13:41it's the word of God. He's warning us and there's
- 13:46things in the Bible sometimes going to be really hard to hear,
- 13:48but what we should do is be looking at ourselves.
- 13:51Is any of these things in me? We're not exempt in any way.
- 13:57Sometimes we can be spots in a love feast.
- 14:02Sometimes we can cause people to stumble with our behavior.
- 14:06Sometimes we can be like clouds without water.
- 14:10Sometimes we can not have fruit or not show fruit in our lives,
- 14:17but again God is warning us and saying in the later times these
- 14:22things are going to be so. And so we look at verse 14 as we
- 14:27get ready to come to a close. Here in verse 14 through 15 he
- 14:32says this. Now Enoch the 7th from Adam
- 14:35prophesied about these men also, saying, Behold, the Lord comes
- 14:40with 10 thousands of his Saints to execute judgment on all who
- 14:46on all, to convict all who ungodly, who are ungodly among
- 14:51them, of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an
- 14:55ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly
- 15:01sinners have spoken against him. And verse 15, the word ungodly
- 15:10is mentioned 4 * 4 times. But the important thing is the
- 15:17fact that this book, this particular Scripture, talks
- 15:22about the coming judgement of those who are ungodly.
- 15:25Now, first of all, we got to deal with this whole Enoch thing
- 15:29because Enoch is only mentioned in the Bible back in Genesis,
- 15:33chapter 5. OK, That's where he's mentioned.
- 15:37And he's mentioned this interesting story.
- 15:40Enoch is from the line of Seth, You know, when men begin to call
- 15:46on the Lord. That line, Enoch was a righteous
- 15:50man, a very righteous man. In fact, in the Bible, in
- 15:55Genesis 5, it talks about Enoch walking with God.
- 15:59And then he was no more. Enoch didn't see death.
- 16:04He didn't go through the doorway of death the way many have.
- 16:08Enoch was just taken and it's such a picture of the church, of
- 16:14the rapture, of the church. One day when we too will be
- 16:20taken, be taken out of here. I think about Isaiah 57 that
- 16:25says that the righteous man perish and no one takes it to
- 16:28heart that the righteous man are taken away from the evil to
- 16:33come. Enoch was actually taken away
- 16:36before the great flood. He didn't have to worry about
- 16:39saying that. And the church one day will be
- 16:42raptured. And that's a picture of, I
- 16:44believe that's a foreshadow of the rapture of the church.
- 16:48But it but Enoch is it. It was a apocryphal book, which
- 16:53means that it was written outside of the Canon of
- 16:57Scripture. It's not a part of the
- 16:58Scripture, the book that he has written or a book that is said
- 17:02that he has written because often times that these are
- 17:04prophetical books. The author of these books are
- 17:07not necessarily authenticated. So we don't really know whether
- 17:12Enoch was the one that actually wrote this book or not, but it
- 17:15does have. But there was a book that had
- 17:17prophecies called the Apocryphal book of Enoch and it did have
- 17:22this particular quote in it. There's this non biblical
- 17:26prophetic source, but that's not different.
- 17:30Paul himself also quoted non biblical poets and writers and
- 17:37his scriptures. He quoted it.
- 17:39In fact, one of the scriptures that we probably know very well
- 17:43was actually a quote from someone who was non biblical,
- 17:47and that's in Titus. I'm sorry that in First
- 17:50Corinthians chapter 15, Paul quotes a a poet by the name of
- 17:55Menander and this was the quote. You guys will recognize it.
- 18:00Evil company corrupts good habits.
- 18:04That was actually taken from a a, a a Greek writer, a Greek
- 18:08poet, even in the Acts 17 that when he was at Mars Hill, when
- 18:14he was beginning to talk with the minute Mars Hill about
- 18:18Christ, he he, he gave a quote where he says we are the
- 18:21offspring of God. He said even one of your own
- 18:23poets said that we are the offspring of God.
- 18:27That was a Athenian prophet or Athenian poet who said that.
- 18:32So there's been other times in the New Testament or other times
- 18:35in the Bible where non biblical sources were quoted.
- 18:39However, God has purpose in putting these things in
- 18:46Scripture. None of these things that have
- 18:49not been contrary to Scripture and they've only proven what
- 18:53Scripture was already saying. So it wasn't like it was saying
- 18:57anything. It's no new truth.
- 18:59You know, they're not giving a new truth.
- 19:00They're not giving a new prophecy or anything like that.
- 19:02These things are already said. But here in this book, it says
- 19:06that, you know, he talks about these, you know, it is going to
- 19:09be coming. He's already prophesied in
- 19:11talking about how these men, these ungodly men, these, these
- 19:16false prophets and false teachers, how they are going to
- 19:20be judged. This is basically what this is
- 19:22saying, and it's the same thing that's been said all throughout
- 19:25the Scripture. And Judes thought it was
- 19:27necessary or helpful to put it in, but he's talking about him
- 19:32being ungodly and he mentions it four times, you know, convicted
- 19:36who? All who are ungodly among them
- 19:39of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an
- 19:43ungodly way, of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners
- 19:49have spoken against him, none of those things go against
- 19:53Scripture. But it wasn't part of the
- 19:55original Canon of the Word of God.
- 19:59But yet we have it. We have it and you know.
- 20:05The truth of the matter is, is that we were all ungodly at one
- 20:08time. All of us were ungodly.
- 20:12In fact, the Bible says over in the book of Romans chapter 5, he
- 20:15says that, you know, while we were still without strength,
- 20:22Jesus came and died for the ungodly.
- 20:25He justifies the ungodly. So it was, you know, in fact, he
- 20:31came, He came to, He came to earth for the ungodly.
- 20:37He didn't come for those who are righteous.
- 20:39Bible says he came to bring sinners to repentance.
- 20:44The ungodly. Ungodly simply means without
- 20:46God, without God in our speech, without God in our thoughts,
- 20:50without God in our actions. We were all at one time ungodly,
- 20:56but because of Jesus Christ, because of His love, because of
- 21:00His mercy, and because of His grace, He justified the ungodly.
- 21:06He justified us, and all we have to do is believe on Him and He
- 21:11begins to change us from the inside out.
- 21:15And the fruit that we were talking about earlier, that
- 21:17fruit comes because we are connected with Jesus Christ and
- 21:21He brings fruit in our lives. It's the washing of the water,
- 21:28the washing of the water. We are cleansed by the Word of
- 21:30God. We are sanctified by the Word of
- 21:33God. We're washed through the Word of
- 21:37God. So I thank God today that we can
- 21:41come to him in prayer. Even those of us who may still
- 21:45be without strength, we can still come to Him and we can
- 21:49repent of anything that we do or are doing.
- 21:54And we know that the Word of God is there for us, His grace is
- 21:59there for us, His forgiveness, His love is there for us to
- 22:04cleanse us and wash us from all our ungodliness and all of our
- 22:09uncleanness. I'm so happy about that.
- 22:15I'm so happy about that. So I pray that if there's
- 22:17anybody here today who may feel in their own hearts, they look,
- 22:21I'm ungodly and I'm not. I'm not good enough and my life
- 22:27is a mess. You don't know the kind of life
- 22:30that I live. You don't know the kind of sins
- 22:33that I commit. I just want to tell you, it
- 22:36really doesn't matter. It doesn't matter.
- 22:40He is here to cleanse you. He's here to save you.
- 22:47He's here to redeem you. He came for the ungodly, the
- 22:54unrighteous. And if you feel that my life has
- 23:00just been a mess because I've tried to do it all on my own,
- 23:03but I want forgiveness of sins. I want to be forgiven.
- 23:08I want this Christian life. I want fruit in my life.
- 23:14I don't want to be controlled by sin anymore in my life.
- 23:18I don't want my life to be controlled by the enemy anymore.
- 23:24I want to give my heart to Jesus Christ.
- 23:28He's not asking you to do anything outside of trust him,
- 23:31believe in. There's no list of do's and
- 23:35don'ts that He's going to give you.
- 23:37We're not going to give you a list of do's and don'ts because
- 23:40you get saved. The Holy Spirit comes into you
- 23:44when you the moment you believe, the Holy Spirit comes into your
- 23:48heart, and He is the one who changes us, not men.
- 23:57You've been listening to Living Waters of Grace with Pastor
- 24:00Lewis Harrell at Calvary Chapel Westmoreland in Greensburg, PA.
- 24:06As Pastor Lewis continues to preach through the book of Jude,
- 24:10he wants you to realize that you can't be a part time Christian
- 24:14if you're going to follow Jesus. He is going to ask for your
- 24:17undivided loyalty. If you try to serve your own
- 24:21interests while following Jesus, you find that you can't do
- 24:25either one successfully. But if you run after Jesus with
- 24:29everything you have, you'll be amazed at how He provides for
- 24:34you and sustains you on the journey, even when you have no
- 24:38idea of where your provision will come from.
