- 0:15Speaker 1: This is a chopper! It's showtime.
- 0:29Speaker 2: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 0:32Speaker 2: Picture Association of America.
- 0:34Speaker 3: It is intended for mature audiences and parental discretion is advised.
- 0:39Speaker 4: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million kilowatts of power.
- 1:09Speaker 1: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown.
- 1:11Speaker 5: I'm Brian and joining me today via the magic of.
- 1:15Speaker 1: The internet is.
- 1:17Speaker 6: Sam.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Hey. What's your name?
- 1:20Speaker 1: We'll be Sam Drog today.
- 1:39Speaker 7: It's always an identity crisis.
- 1:41Speaker 8: Absolutely. Who do I feel like today?
- 1:45Speaker 1: So normally in most of these episodes, we end up
- 1:49Speaker 1: starting off going over, hey, what have we seen lately?
- 1:53Speaker 1: And then we'll get sidetracked. I mean, we get sidetracked anyway.
- 1:58Speaker 1: So knowing that's on the table, I think this time
- 2:02Speaker 1: we should skip the outside world, other things we've watched,
- 2:06Speaker 1: start focusing more on the general universe we're dealing with here.
- 2:11Speaker 1: And I was thinking maybe more like our crow episode
- 2:14Speaker 1: last year, where we actually did sort of an overview
- 2:18Speaker 1: of the idea, the world of the crow, and then
- 2:21Speaker 1: we just eventually rounded it out with the latest movie.
- 2:25Speaker 1: So now we're entering into the world of predators. Ba-da-da-da-da-da.
- 2:30Speaker 8: Ba-da-da-da-da-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch.
- 2:32Speaker 1: So here's the weird part. I mean, can you even
- 2:37Speaker 1: remember how many Predator movies there are? I feel like
- 2:41Speaker 1: most normal people, if you ask them, would get that
- 2:44Speaker 1: number wrong. Agreed. Agreed.
- 2:47Speaker 8: Okay, so Predator is weird. Because there's this huge dry
- 2:52Speaker 8: spell where they just decided not to make Predator movies.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Well, not that long, though. Like, it still kept dragging on.
- 2:58Speaker 7: Like, and especially if you had the crossover movies.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Like, if you count the crossover movies, which I kind
- 3:03Speaker 1: of don't, but.
- 3:04Speaker 8: Well, I kind of do, but.
- 3:06Speaker 7: But even then, like, it's.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Not that far. Like, it's... 87 90 2004 2007 2010
- 3:09Speaker 1: 2018 2022 like it just kept like there's not a
- 3:11Speaker 1: huge period there no no 2018 is maybe the biggest
- 3:13Speaker 1: dry spell well i mean 2000 and i mean 90
- 3:15Speaker 1: to 2004 is 14 years is a long time to
- 3:17Speaker 1: go without predator Not in my head.
- 3:33Speaker 8: Because look, it's a 90.
- 3:35Speaker 1: That's the decade right before the zeros, and then it's
- 3:38Speaker 1: a 04. So that's right next to each other. Just
- 3:42Speaker 1: like the other day was 2000, right? That was just
- 3:45Speaker 1: the other day in my head.
- 3:46Speaker 8: Yeah, that's right. I remember.
- 3:47Speaker 1: The millennium. I remember it.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I remember it.
- 3:49Speaker 8: I remember it just happened. Why today, dude?
- 3:51Speaker 1: We've got to watch out for that.
- 3:52Speaker 8: Just a minute ago. Just a minute ago. I still
- 3:53Speaker 8: need to update my plot.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Not 25 years later. You're wrong.
- 3:56Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Time-space continuum. You're wrong.
- 4:01Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, no, I would say, no, no, Brian, Brian,
- 4:04Speaker 8: I would say that this thing, in my opinion, there
- 4:08Speaker 8: are a lot more Predator movies than you think there are,
- 4:11Speaker 8: because for me, it is still the year 2000, and
- 4:15Speaker 8: I'm going like, when are they going to make another
- 4:17Speaker 8: Predator movie?
- 4:19Speaker 7: Me, it's like, it's still 87, like, I'm still walking
- 4:21Speaker 7: out of here.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Going, oh, Dutch, you got him, good going, buddy, like...
- 4:25Speaker 1: It's still kind of, you know, original run for me.
- 4:28Speaker 1: It was like, oh, yeah, then they followed it up
- 4:30Speaker 1: with two. I remember that.
- 4:31Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 4:33Speaker 7: And then Dan came along. There's nothing in between there, right?
- 4:36Speaker 1: Because I feel like those middle two, you'd be lucky
- 4:40Speaker 1: if you could find people that remember that those exist.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Unless they're super movie geeks or just Predator super fans.
- 4:46Speaker 8: Right, right.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Those are totally forgotten.
- 4:48Speaker 5: At this point.
- 4:49Speaker 8: Predators and The Predator. That's the ones you're talking about, right? Yes.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Those are the middle two sandwiched in post-crossover movies but
- 4:57Speaker 1: pre-ban movies.
- 4:59Speaker 8: Right, right, right.
- 5:00Speaker 1: So.
- 5:01Speaker 8: yeah let me tell you let me okay let me
- 5:04Speaker 8: tell you because i binged as many as i could
- 5:08Speaker 8: before uh in the week leading up to seeding badlands.
- 5:13Speaker 1: You know that's what i thought would would be our
- 5:15Speaker 1: other movies we've been watching lately because i also watched
- 5:18Speaker 1: a couple of yeah yeah yeah so we're loaded with predators.
- 5:24Speaker 8: I am i am so overflowing with predator and so
- 5:28Speaker 8: it's like uh You know, the only one I missed,
- 5:32Speaker 8: I think I got them all except for the Shane Black,
- 5:36Speaker 8: the Predators one, unless there's something after that. And I
- 5:39Speaker 8: haven't seen the cartoon that's on Hulu.
- 5:41Speaker 7: The killer of killers is good.
- 5:44Speaker 8: Okay. So, so I'm, I think they've gotten some good,
- 5:48Speaker 8: they've gotten a good hold handle on it, you know, uh, fine.
- 5:51Speaker 7: Definitely these days.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Yes. Yeah. Yeah.
- 5:53Speaker 8: I mean, I think the Rodriguez one that he produced,
- 5:57Speaker 8: I think that was like, like kind of like him
- 6:00Speaker 8: kind of just being a predator geek but it was
- 6:03Speaker 8: also like uh it just didn't have the i think
- 6:06Speaker 8: that i think it was just like uh they had
- 6:08Speaker 8: to make something to keep the ip going or something
- 6:11Speaker 8: but it just i don't.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Know if that was legally true but it kind of
- 6:14Speaker 1: feels like.
- 6:15Speaker 8: It feels like that it kind of feels like the
- 6:16Speaker 8: fantastic four situation where they're just trying to keep the.
- 6:20Speaker 7: Gotta keep it in our name.
- 6:21Speaker 1: It's the Sony reboot of Spider-Man. We gotta put something out, man.
- 6:26Speaker 1: We're gonna lose the rights. Gotta get something going.
- 6:30Speaker 8: I did go through that one, but I tell ya,
- 6:33Speaker 8: it was a lot. It is a.
- 6:40Speaker 8: I don't even know where to go.
- 6:42Speaker 1: I guess before we jump to that one, I think
- 6:45Speaker 1: first we just have to address the fact that I
- 6:48Speaker 1: don't know that McTiernan gets enough credit for being who
- 6:51Speaker 1: he is because I mean, back to back, almost perfect,
- 6:58Speaker 1: like certainly perfectly structured action movies. Like, I mean, Nomads
- 7:03Speaker 1: is cool. I forgot about that one, but like he
- 7:05Speaker 1: starts in 87 with Predator and like, I don't, know
- 7:09Speaker 1: that like there's so many things about just the way
- 7:12Speaker 1: it's put together as an action movie and then eventually
- 7:15Speaker 1: a sci-fi movie but like you're halfway in before you
- 7:17Speaker 1: knew it was a sci-fi movie if you'd never watched
- 7:19Speaker 1: the trailer so like yeah it is just so well
- 7:23Speaker 1: put together and then to follow that up a year
- 7:26Speaker 1: later with die hard like the the most perfectly structured
- 7:30Speaker 1: action movie ever so much so that it created its
- 7:33Speaker 1: own sub-genre of die hard on a blank movies that
- 7:38Speaker 1: They're still making today. I still just watched the one
- 7:41Speaker 1: with Rey in it. Did you know there is a thing?
- 7:46Speaker 1: Rey from Star Wars.
- 7:47Speaker 8: Okay, where she's a window washer, right?
- 7:49Speaker 1: Yeah, she's basically just doing dialogue.
- 7:51Speaker 8: I was like, okay, because we all know the window
- 7:55Speaker 8: washers we see in life all look like supermodels.
- 7:59Speaker 1: They look like supermodels and they used to be in
- 8:02Speaker 1: the military so they can kick ass. We all know
- 8:05Speaker 1: that's how window washers operate.
- 8:07Speaker 8: She has no heat damage to her skin at all.
- 8:11Speaker 7: No shrapnel on the side of her face.
- 8:14Speaker 8: Just came out of a vat of butter. And like,
- 8:17Speaker 8: as now she's, uh, I was like, yeah, I didn't
- 8:20Speaker 8: get through it. I was like, I'm trying to imagine.
- 8:24Speaker 1: It was fine, but it's just, again, you watch that
- 8:27Speaker 1: and you're like, okay, now they're just not even going
- 8:29Speaker 1: somewhere else to do a diehard knockoff. They're back in
- 8:31Speaker 1: a building. Yeah. And I was like, wait, isn't that
- 8:36Speaker 1: already taken? But yeah, I was just like, but if
- 8:41Speaker 1: you want a good way to see how good Die
- 8:43Speaker 1: Hard is, watch that by comparison. And I'm like, it's
- 8:46Speaker 1: fine if you'd never seen Die Hard. You'd watch it
- 8:49Speaker 1: and be like, yeah, it's an action movie. It's not
- 8:52Speaker 1: even that much action, really. It's mostly her hanging on
- 8:54Speaker 1: the side of a building for two-thirds of the movie.
- 8:57Speaker 1: And then eventually there's some fight scenes. But for the
- 8:59Speaker 1: most part, it's not even a huge action movie. But yeah,
- 9:03Speaker 1: you watch that versus the vast, amazing structure and just
- 9:10Speaker 1: the way that that movie is laid out is perfect.
- 9:13Speaker 1: And so McTiernan kind of, I mean, and then follows
- 9:17Speaker 1: it with Hunt for Red October. So again, they've been
- 9:19Speaker 1: making submarine movies trying to do that for you. That's it.
- 9:23Speaker 8: That's it. Yeah, yeah. McTiernan, let me just say. The
- 9:29Speaker 8: 1980s had us all spoiled. I'm going to drop some
- 9:33Speaker 8: hot takes here.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Old man gets ready to hug cloud. I remember back
- 9:41Speaker 1: in the old days.
- 9:42Speaker 8: The 80s had us spoiled. Because in my mind, when
- 9:46Speaker 8: I saw Predator, I thought it was fine. I thought
- 9:50Speaker 8: it was a Schwarzenegger vehicle. and I thought it was fine, okay?
- 9:57Speaker 8: And I was like, I was not... Predator. I didn't
- 10:01Speaker 8: have Predator mania. I thought it was good, but it
- 10:04Speaker 8: was not Terminator. It was like, it was fine. It was,
- 10:07Speaker 8: I thought it was fine, but that just shows you.
- 10:10Speaker 8: The level of genre cinema at the time was, I think,
- 10:14Speaker 8: in my mind, pretty high, where something like Predator was
- 10:17Speaker 8: just a common movie that would come out in 87.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Now.
- 10:23Speaker 8: I haven't rewatched it, but I've seen Predator, you know,
- 10:27Speaker 8: probably 200 times.
- 10:29Speaker 1: On a loop. On a loop.
- 10:31Speaker 8: Absolutely. It's never not been on.
- 10:35Speaker 7: It's why I didn't go back and watch that one.
- 10:37Speaker 7: I was like, you know, I know that one.
- 10:39Speaker 1: I can play it in my brain right now. I
- 10:41Speaker 1: don't have to rewatch that one.
- 10:43Speaker 8: Exactly. It's like I put the Videodrome tape into my chest.
- 10:48Speaker 8: It's there, you know.
- 10:49Speaker 3: And....
- 10:51Speaker 8: But I had not, I had not, no, I did
- 10:54Speaker 8: go back and watch it because I hadn't seen it.
- 10:56Speaker 8: I hadn't seen it in probably a decade. All right.
- 10:59Speaker 1: You know?
- 11:00Speaker 8: And, uh, what, what I was going like, I was
- 11:03Speaker 8: going like, this is so much better than I remembered
- 11:07Speaker 8: it being.
- 11:08Speaker 1: This is like, so quickly put together. Yeah.
- 11:11Speaker 8: It's like, you have like a real, an app, especially
- 11:15Speaker 8: after seeing the sequels, you have a real sense of
- 11:18Speaker 8: direction and, and it's kind of about something, which the, well, A,
- 11:26Speaker 8: number one, after watching all these movies, the testosterone overdrive
- 11:32Speaker 8: of watching Predator movies back to back, I mean, you
- 11:35Speaker 8: really just want to go wrestle a tree down out
- 11:39Speaker 8: of its roots and then eat it.
- 11:40Speaker 1: I mean, when you've got the arm-to-arm handshake of Schwarzenegger
- 11:47Speaker 1: and Carl Weathers, you've got Apollo Crews. Creed grabbing Arnold
- 11:51Speaker 1: Schwarzenegger's hand.
- 11:52Speaker 9: And you're just like oh my god it's all about
- 11:55Speaker 9: the most testosterone ever and then Jesse the insurer shows
- 12:00Speaker 9: up and Bill Duke and Sonny Landon for God's sake
- 12:05Speaker 9: Billy's the coolest yeah.
- 12:06Speaker 8: Dude it is like the it's like such a movie
- 12:11Speaker 8: about bro code and don't betray the bro code and
- 12:17Speaker 8: just about primal masculine hunting being hunted and just like
- 12:23Speaker 8: it's like it is like a it is like dude
- 12:26Speaker 8: bro the movie and but in a good way but
- 12:29Speaker 8: that's sort of like it's reason to exist you know
- 12:32Speaker 8: is to portray and explore like you know dude code
- 12:37Speaker 8: you know and dudes doing what dudes do best and
- 12:41Speaker 8: you don't you know Carl Weathers kind of betrays the
- 12:43Speaker 8: dude code and like Dylan I thought you were someone
- 12:46Speaker 8: I could trust you know, and everything. And it's just like,
- 12:48Speaker 8: that's like the worst. That's like the worst. They respect
- 12:52Speaker 8: the predator. They don't respect the military industrial complex that
- 12:58Speaker 8: uses them like puppets, you know?
- 13:02Speaker 1: Don't worry. We at least got a little femininity. We
- 13:04Speaker 1: got Anna there.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Oh, we got Anna.
- 13:06Speaker 1: So, like, this ain't Glenn Gary again, Ross. We still
- 13:08Speaker 1: work in a female character. We're very progressive in our 1987-ness.
- 13:11Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:13Speaker 1: We brought in a female character. Aren't you proud of us? Yeah, right, right.
- 13:16Speaker 1: We brought a female character to be a victim in
- 13:18Speaker 1: our dude bro move.
- 13:20Speaker 8: Well, she's like the spiritual center. She, like, says some
- 13:24Speaker 8: mystical things about, you know... you know the the the
- 13:29Speaker 8: culture that they're they're tromping around in you know um
- 13:33Speaker 8: i thought it was real interesting from a 1980s point
- 13:35Speaker 8: of view you know like us our involvement in like
- 13:38Speaker 8: uh south america and it's just kind of like it's
- 13:41Speaker 8: not really it's very interesting it's kind of like saying
- 13:45Speaker 8: kind of like what alien it's like uh you know,
- 13:48Speaker 8: the company is corrupt, but the, the, the, the man,
- 13:52Speaker 8: the feet, people on the ground are good. And, and awesome.
- 13:57Speaker 1: And yeah, man, he's trying to hold him down.
- 13:59Speaker 7: That's right.
- 14:00Speaker 8: Or he's just, he's just used misusing them, you know,
- 14:02Speaker 8: for his own weird agenda. You know, I mean, I, I,
- 14:06Speaker 8: When I watched it as a kid, I never really
- 14:08Speaker 8: got why they were there. I mean, I knew it
- 14:09Speaker 8: was a rescue mission, but it's real interesting seeing it
- 14:12Speaker 8: now with like the 1987, because there was like the
- 14:15Speaker 8: mention of the Russians are moving into the area. So
- 14:18Speaker 8: it's like, you know, trying to get, you know, I
- 14:21Speaker 8: guess the Russians are basically arming these gorillas to, you.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Know, forget the cold war, the cold war.
- 14:28Speaker 8: So it's like, it's all seeped in cold war. That
- 14:30Speaker 8: just shows you like how, how long these predator movies
- 14:34Speaker 8: have been with us. and and you really what was
- 14:38Speaker 8: interesting about watching all of them was just uh the
- 14:41Speaker 8: the differences in technique as it goes forward and really
- 14:47Speaker 8: uh yeah it what for predator to be basically gi
- 14:53Speaker 8: joe versus the man from mars it is so much
- 14:57Speaker 8: better than it has any right to be and it's
- 15:01Speaker 8: it's almost just like freaking perfect and really and kind
- 15:04Speaker 8: of like aliens uh it's been quoted so much that
- 15:10Speaker 8: really i had a friend that loved predator so much
- 15:15Speaker 8: and he probably would quote predator six times a day
- 15:20Speaker 8: just in regular conversation.
- 15:23Speaker 1: How many times did you need to get to the chopper?
- 15:25Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, that was so many times.
- 15:27Speaker 1: You're like, dude, I'm in the break room. We don't
- 15:29Speaker 1: even have a chopper. Shut up.
- 15:33Speaker 8: Well, he just knew that movie so much. It was
- 15:35Speaker 8: just like, oh man, it's just so great. And so
- 15:38Speaker 8: when I was watching this, I just couldn't help but
- 15:40Speaker 8: to think of this guy, you know, and how much
- 15:45Speaker 8: that movie was, you know, indoctrinated into him. And, you know,
- 15:50Speaker 8: kind of like, you know, with like Bill Paxton's character
- 15:53Speaker 8: in aliens and all this stuff in aliens, which is,
- 15:55Speaker 8: you know, just total, total quote machine. And so it's
- 15:59Speaker 8: so great. It's the movie is like, uh, phenomenal. And
- 16:04Speaker 8: it always has pace and direction. And you're always trying
- 16:08Speaker 8: to get somewhere in it. And, uh, what I have,
- 16:12Speaker 8: what I found from the sequels was it felt like,
- 16:17Speaker 8: cause we were about to, we were just started going
- 16:19Speaker 8: on star Wars tangent before, uh, we started recording, the
- 16:25Speaker 8: Predator movies start feeling like Star Wars product, where it's
- 16:31Speaker 8: imagery of Predators, but there's no direction or reason for
- 16:38Speaker 8: any of it to exist.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Yeah. We've got to keep the IP alive.
- 16:43Speaker 5: God.
- 16:44Speaker 8: That's all it is. It's just like a radio-friendly unit shifter.
- 16:49Speaker 1: I mean, I feel like for a while there, it
- 16:51Speaker 1: definitely was. Again, in the newly crowned king of predators,
- 16:58Speaker 1: I don't think that that's true.
- 17:00Speaker 8: No, no, no.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Definitely. Well, I mean, you go to the next one,
- 17:04Speaker 1: and I feel like they were actually.
- 17:05Speaker 7: I don't feel like that was.
- 17:07Speaker 1: trying to do that but it was definitely like in
- 17:10Speaker 1: the era of and we got to do a sequel
- 17:12Speaker 1: so like it was just we got to keep this
- 17:14Speaker 1: thing going but it wasn't the we got to save
- 17:17Speaker 1: the IP we got to build a universe that came
- 17:20Speaker 1: later with a lot of movies right it was more
- 17:23Speaker 1: of just like yes the sequels that's what we do
- 17:25Speaker 1: like that that's how the world works like we're making
- 17:27Speaker 1: an action movie then we're making another action movie so
- 17:31Speaker 1: right it just felt like it was trying to like
- 17:33Speaker 1: tap into that thing the first time and it doesn't exactly.
- 17:37Speaker 1: I re-watched that one maybe about two years ago, I remember,
- 17:41Speaker 1: because I hadn't seen it maybe since the theater, and
- 17:43Speaker 1: I was like, all right, let's revisit this.
- 17:46Speaker 7: I remember thinking it was all right.
- 17:47Speaker 1: It's no Predator, but it was pretty good as it went,
- 17:52Speaker 1: and it's fine.
- 17:54Speaker 8: It's fine. It's fine. It's fine. I had much higher
- 17:57Speaker 8: esteem for it back in the day, actually. When I
- 18:01Speaker 8: first saw Predator 2, I was like, man, this movie's badass,
- 18:04Speaker 8: all right? I kind of like the cartoonish, hyper-frenetic energy
- 18:10Speaker 8: of it, you know?
- 18:10Speaker 1: I like the weird future world where the year of
- 18:14Speaker 1: 1997 or whatever it was. Yeah.
- 18:18Speaker 8: There's a shot of Danny Glover walking through some puddles
- 18:23Speaker 8: or something, and his suit is so big on him.
- 18:27Speaker 8: It almost looks like... Oversized suits were kind of a
- 18:31Speaker 8: thing for a minute, and his suit is so.
- 18:36Speaker 8: On him it looks like uh you know dress up
- 18:39Speaker 8: like a kid playing dress you know it well you
- 18:42Speaker 8: know and.
- 18:42Speaker 1: It's also funny handing it like so you're you're mano
- 18:46Speaker 1: on mano with schwarzenegger in the last one and now
- 18:48Speaker 1: it's like danny glover who last year told us he
- 18:51Speaker 1: was too old for this shit so now him by
- 18:54Speaker 1: himself in a giant suit with a good like a
- 18:56Speaker 1: handgun like that's all he has to fight the predator
- 18:59Speaker 1: like So it seemed like a weird baton handoff there.
- 19:04Speaker 8: Absolutely.
- 19:04Speaker 1: He's like, oh, okay, Danny Glover here. He holds his
- 19:08Speaker 1: own as best as Danny Glover can.
- 19:09Speaker 7: I love Danny Glover, but it's just a weird shift.
- 19:13Speaker 8: The problem is he has nothing to play. I mean,
- 19:16Speaker 8: the problem with that movie is nobody has anything to
- 19:18Speaker 8: play other than cop stereotypes. That movie actually feels like the,
- 19:25Speaker 8: it actually feels like last action hero is directly making
- 19:29Speaker 8: fun of predator 2 in some part ways you know
- 19:32Speaker 8: it's like it's kind of making fun of every action
- 19:34Speaker 8: movie that came before it there's there's there's a good
- 19:38Speaker 8: job of it yeah yeah it does it does but
- 19:41Speaker 8: i mean predator 2 is kind of like the same
- 19:47Speaker 8: script just done for comedy in Last Action Hero. It's so...
- 19:50Speaker 8: Predator 2 is like... What I like about it is
- 19:56Speaker 8: the energy that comes to it, but it really... it
- 19:59Speaker 8: doesn't have the direction and for momentum. That movie basically
- 20:03Speaker 8: is doing, uh, uh, uh, donuts in the parking lot
- 20:08Speaker 8: until the last 30 minutes. Uh, when, you know, it
- 20:12Speaker 8: becomes just a basically fight against, you know, man on man, uh,
- 20:16Speaker 8: man versus predator, Danny Glover versus predator. I think what
- 20:20Speaker 8: I liked about it when I saw it, it was like, well,
- 20:21Speaker 8: I felt they really gave you your money's worth for
- 20:24Speaker 8: the final fight scene. Um, which spans several different locations,
- 20:30Speaker 8: you know, and I guess starts in the slaughterhouse. But,
- 20:33Speaker 8: you know, seeing it again now, I'm going like, it's
- 20:36Speaker 8: not as impressive as I remember. And I remember, and
- 20:40Speaker 8: the Predator gives up very quickly in this one, in
- 20:45Speaker 8: Predator 2. He's hanging on the side of a building
- 20:49Speaker 8: and Danny Glover is like next to him. And Predator.
- 20:55Speaker 8: We know he can jump up walls and jump across
- 20:57Speaker 8: rooftop to rooftop but him hanging on the side there
- 20:59Speaker 8: he just says ah screw it.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Well I mean if you translate what he roars out
- 21:06Speaker 1: in his language it's I'm getting too old for this
- 21:08Speaker 1: shit and then he just gives up he's just like
- 21:10Speaker 1: that's it I'm done.
- 21:12Speaker 8: And it was kind of funny the fan service where
- 21:15Speaker 8: Danny Glover goes like you know one ugly and then
- 21:19Speaker 8: Predator grabs him and throws him and goes like motherfucker
- 21:22Speaker 8: I'm going like oh so he saw Predator.
- 21:25Speaker 1: We all saw Predator. Even the Predator.
- 21:27Speaker 8: It was huge.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Even in outer space, they were like, oh, did you
- 21:31Speaker 1: catch that beam from Earth on Predator? That movie's pretty good.
- 21:34Speaker 8: Pretty good. They have HBO. Of course.
- 21:38Speaker 1: HBO Space Plus.
- 21:39Speaker 7: It's a new space streaming feature.
- 21:42Speaker 1: They'll change the name of it next year.
- 21:44Speaker 3: Don't worry.
- 21:44Speaker 1: It's okay.
- 21:46Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah. So that movie's crazy. I mean, it does
- 21:49Speaker 8: have kind of like a last... I mean, national... What?
- 21:52Speaker 8: Natural-born killers, early 90s, hyper-violent. We're trying to turn everything up.
- 21:57Speaker 8: The world's falling apart. You know.
- 22:01Speaker 8: The ones that got Robert Downey Jr., not Robert Downey,
- 22:04Speaker 8: Morton Downey Jr.
- 22:05Speaker 3: In it.
- 22:05Speaker 8: I mean, it's just a big mess of a movie,
- 22:08Speaker 8: you know?
- 22:09Speaker 1: You can also feel them, like, trying, that's maybe one
- 22:12Speaker 1: of those first era of them, like, we're already acknowledging, like,
- 22:15Speaker 1: the great movies that just happened in the 80s.
- 22:17Speaker 8: Right.
- 22:18Speaker 1: So they're already like, oh, we gotta pull from that and, like,
- 22:20Speaker 1: shove people in here. So, like, remember how cool Gary
- 22:23Speaker 1: Busey was in Lethal Weapon? I wanted to put him
- 22:26Speaker 1: in here. Bill Paxton, man, that guy was awesome in Aliens.
- 22:29Speaker 1: So we're going to put him in here.
- 22:30Speaker 7: He's an alien, but it's Predator. They're kind of connected, right?
- 22:34Speaker 1: So let's put Bill Paxton in here, and it's kind
- 22:37Speaker 1: of the same thing, right? You can feel them almost
- 22:40Speaker 1: playing with their action figures, trying to recreate the magic
- 22:44Speaker 1: that happened in these other movies just a couple of
- 22:46Speaker 1: years ago. I don't know that it exactly works.
- 22:49Speaker 8: No, it doesn't exactly work. The movie just... It's really
- 22:55Speaker 8: a weird movie that's... all drive and nowhere to go. And, uh,
- 23:00Speaker 8: and I think the problem with it is that it
- 23:02Speaker 8: gets buried under its own like, uh, tropes and cliches there, there,
- 23:07Speaker 8: as in, there's no, nothing honest about it. There's there,
- 23:10Speaker 8: it's all people play. I love the idea of predator
- 23:14Speaker 8: being in, uh, you know, You know, basically it says
- 23:18Speaker 8: it's from the future, but it's basically 1991, you know, L.A. and,
- 23:24Speaker 8: you know, with the riots and everything falling apart in L.A.
- 23:28Speaker 8: And that's kind of a cool idea of that Predator
- 23:31Speaker 8: would come out and prey on the gang violence, you know.
- 23:33Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 23:35Speaker 1: But it's a cool does it work because it's almost
- 23:37Speaker 1: doing from that perspective it is doing the same thing
- 23:41Speaker 1: like the first one is just yeah an action movie
- 23:43Speaker 1: and we cram an alien in the middle of it
- 23:45Speaker 1: right this is basically just like a procedural cop drama
- 23:48Speaker 1: which we had a ton of at that point right
- 23:51Speaker 1: it's doing that for the first two-thirds of this movie
- 23:53Speaker 1: it just crams an alien in and somehow it isn't
- 23:56Speaker 1: the same like it's weird because it's it is still
- 23:59Speaker 1: trying to be a conventional cop movie for the first
- 24:02Speaker 1: half of it. And they're just going to the crime
- 24:04Speaker 1: scenes and trying to figure out what's going on. And like,
- 24:07Speaker 1: somehow it just doesn't translate the same way the original does.
- 24:10Speaker 1: I don't, I don't even know specifically the alchemy that
- 24:13Speaker 1: came into play in the first one, but it doesn't,
- 24:16Speaker 1: doesn't click.
- 24:17Speaker 7: The same in that second movie.
- 24:18Speaker 8: And that's why, like, as you said, McTiernan used to
- 24:21Speaker 8: give a lot of credit or it was just lightning
- 24:23Speaker 8: in a bottle that, you know, the second one just
- 24:26Speaker 8: doesn't work. The problem is also, yeah, as you said it,
- 24:29Speaker 8: them going from crime scene to crime scene becomes very redundant.
- 24:33Speaker 8: And so it's just like there's no progression of the
- 24:38Speaker 8: story at all until the Predator and Danny Glover fight
- 24:43Speaker 8: at the end.
- 24:43Speaker 7: So it's a big reveal, yeah.
- 24:44Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah. It's just a giant circular kind of plot
- 24:50Speaker 8: of Predator kills somebody. They show up. And Danny Glover,
- 24:53Speaker 8: I like Danny Glover. He's great in Lethal Weapon movies,
- 24:56Speaker 8: and he's done some real acting and everything, but this
- 24:59Speaker 8: is kind of like a Saw performance where I just
- 25:02Speaker 8: feel like the movie kind of like hangs him out
- 25:04Speaker 8: to dry. It doesn't shoot him right. I just wanted
- 25:09Speaker 8: to do a super cut of Danny running away from
- 25:12Speaker 8: the camera. I don't know why I fixated on this.
- 25:15Speaker 8: It was just like he's just always running away from
- 25:20Speaker 8: the camera and uh, trying to start a fight with somebody.
- 25:23Speaker 8: And I was just kind of like, it, it doesn't,
- 25:26Speaker 8: I don't know why that it, I think how you
- 25:29Speaker 8: shoot your, your macho lead as a lot to how
- 25:34Speaker 8: the power, uh, that he brings to a movie and
- 25:37Speaker 8: Denny Glover is just always running away.
- 25:40Speaker 1: And again, from that point, he was already built as a,
- 25:45Speaker 1: I'm just, I'm tired, man. Yeah. I'm getting ready to
- 25:50Speaker 1: retire from this cop job, and I don't need to
- 25:52Speaker 1: be fighting a damn alien.
- 25:55Speaker 7: I don't feel like I hear that from Dutch. Dutch
- 25:58Speaker 7: is like, I'm gonna kick some.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Of his ass.
- 26:00Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:00Speaker 8: Dutch is like this natural leader in the movie. He's like,
- 26:04Speaker 8: he plays.
- 26:04Speaker 1: He's equally as old and should be retired, but you
- 26:08Speaker 1: don't get that from him. Yeah, yeah. I mean.
- 26:11Speaker 8: Danny Glover's character could have been so cool, you know?
- 26:14Speaker 8: But he does kind of play him as kind of
- 26:16Speaker 8: tired and kind of beat down by the machine. And
- 26:19Speaker 8: then this predator comes along. He's got to show up,
- 26:21Speaker 8: you know? Yeah. I mean, I don't know what it is.
- 26:24Speaker 8: And it could have been like a, you know, like
- 26:27Speaker 8: a dirty, hairy kind of versus predator, which would have
- 26:33Speaker 8: been a cool thing, you know, but I don't know.
- 26:35Speaker 8: The movie just doesn't do him any favors. And, Can
- 26:40Speaker 8: we just say that one of the great things about
- 26:43Speaker 8: these new Predator movies is they ditched the jungle room
- 26:49Speaker 8: nightclub interior of the Predator ship that was like.
- 26:55Speaker 8: I'm sorry. I don't know.
- 26:57Speaker 1: They still like to go to those inside the ship
- 27:00Speaker 1: and we got the trophies on the wall. We still
- 27:03Speaker 1: got to get that in usually. That's fine. It may
- 27:05Speaker 1: just not be the cool nightclub scene you're looking for.
- 27:08Speaker 8: Dude, the interior of the Predator ship in Predator 2
- 27:12Speaker 8: is like such a mess, man. It's such a mess.
- 27:18Speaker 8: I can't stand it. You know, I like that they
- 27:20Speaker 8: kind of have hieroglyphics and, you know, that the Predator,
- 27:24Speaker 8: you know, iconography is kind of like a Mayan type,
- 27:27Speaker 8: you know, look to hieroglyphics and stuff. But, oh, I
- 27:30Speaker 8: just hated those backlit walls with the fog and. I mean,
- 27:33Speaker 8: it looked like a nightclub. It was terrible.
- 27:37Speaker 7: I think you just want to hang out there.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Let's be real. You want to hit the club with
- 27:41Speaker 1: the Predators and dance around. I see it.
- 27:45Speaker 8: All that set is missing is a mirror ball. Come on, dude.
- 27:48Speaker 8: It's just missing a mirror ball and a bar in
- 27:51Speaker 8: the corner. That's all it's missing. You place the trophy
- 27:55Speaker 8: case with a bar. You know, I mean, that place
- 27:57Speaker 8: is good to go. Xenomorph serving you drinks. He just
- 28:03Speaker 8: sort of.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Hisses and throws you a vodka and tonic. And you're like,
- 28:06Speaker 1: all right, good enough.
- 28:08Speaker 8: Absolutely.
- 28:09Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:09Speaker 8: And I still don't know what the thing with the
- 28:11Speaker 8: gun at the end. I know it would take me
- 28:13Speaker 8: five seconds to look it up on Google. But, you know.
- 28:17Speaker 1: So as far as we know, I'd never really remember
- 28:21Speaker 1: hearing about a Predator 3 gun. So as you said,
- 28:24Speaker 1: there's a big stretch there. So it's like, why is it?
- 28:27Speaker 1: Two still made decent money, I feel like. I went
- 28:30Speaker 1: and saw it in the theater.
- 28:31Speaker 7: So I feel like it did okay when it came out.
- 28:33Speaker 1: It seems like they were primed to be like, all right,
- 28:35Speaker 1: heading down the rest of this road instead of just
- 28:38Speaker 1: sort of coming to a screeching halt for a while there.
- 28:42Speaker 8: Right, right. No, a screeching halt. And I guess it
- 28:44Speaker 8: got kept alive on comic books and expanded universe.
- 28:48Speaker 1: I feel like the reason it didn't feel like as
- 28:51Speaker 1: long a stretch is... Because the alien part of the
- 28:55Speaker 1: alien franchise kept going on for two more movies, and
- 28:59Speaker 1: it kind of kept it alive until we get to
- 29:02Speaker 1: the crossover movie.
- 29:03Speaker 7: Again, we still had a few years after that fourth one, but.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Enough that people were still hyped about Alien, and then
- 29:10Speaker 1: they remembered Predator from the other two movies enough to
- 29:12Speaker 1: be like, oh, that's going to be awesome. Yeah.
- 29:14Speaker 8: I don't know if anybody.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Actually said that. Certainly not after they.
- 29:17Speaker 8: Saw the movie. Well, here's a hot take, all right?
- 29:22Speaker 8: So I really enjoy Alien vs.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Predator. I, again, went and saw it in the theater.
- 29:29Speaker 1: I don't know that I've rewatched it since then.
- 29:32Speaker 8: Okay. I rewatched it, and after.
- 29:35Speaker 8: Predator 2, I think it's a better movie. And I
- 29:40Speaker 8: would say that it's ridiculous. It's got Paul Thomas Anderson problems.
- 29:45Speaker 8: But what I like about Paul Thomas Anderson movies is
- 29:49Speaker 8: that he is obviously just this total geeking out fanboy
- 29:55Speaker 8: who just loves movies and And he comes up with some, he,
- 30:01Speaker 8: I think he can stage an action sequence pretty good. And, uh,
- 30:05Speaker 8: it does make you appreciate that it doesn't start. He
- 30:07Speaker 8: had to Bovich at it.
- 30:09Speaker 7: And before he might reinsert her in digitally now, right, right.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Right.
- 30:12Speaker 8: The special edition.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Right. Um, Hey man, if you find a, you find
- 30:18Speaker 1: a person you like working with, you marry them.
- 30:20Speaker 7: And you make a lot of movies together.
- 30:21Speaker 8: That's it. That's it. Um, It's like the Kate Beckinsale director.
- 30:26Speaker 8: Just going to keep.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Making these terrible movies with you in it. You'd think
- 30:31Speaker 1: you'd want to make a better movie for your wife,
- 30:33Speaker 1: but I guess not. As long as we're working together,
- 30:35Speaker 1: good enough.
- 30:37Speaker 8: That's it. It's a vacation. I don't know. I enjoy it.
- 30:43Speaker 8: My main thing is.
- 30:45Speaker 1: I.
- 30:47Speaker 8: Don't know how many hot takes I've got left, but
- 30:49Speaker 8: I think... The Alien vs. Predator design of the Predator
- 30:54Speaker 8: fixed some problems I had with the Predator design. Of that... So,
- 31:04Speaker 8: the Predator from the first two, especially from the first one,
- 31:08Speaker 8: I never liked fishnets and a space helmet.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Alright? I just... what you wear to the club when
- 31:17Speaker 1: you're getting your drink from the Xenomorph. You got your
- 31:19Speaker 1: fishnets on, you're looking hot.
- 31:21Speaker 8: I'm just like.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Music's bumping, you know, come on.
- 31:25Speaker 8: Now, I know it's Stan Winston, but I also know
- 31:28Speaker 8: the original design got scrapped halfway through production and they
- 31:32Speaker 8: had to come up with something real quick.
- 31:34Speaker 7: Hey, Jean-Claude Van Damme looks good in those fishnets.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Don't you worry.
- 31:41Speaker 8: They had to switch out the design. And so they
- 31:44Speaker 8: cobbled it together. And I feel like the combination of underwear, whatchamacallit, fishnets,
- 31:54Speaker 8: and a big clunky space helmet just never worked for me.
- 31:59Speaker 8: And I think it looks better in drawings, but on
- 32:02Speaker 8: screen it didn't. What I liked about the AVP design
- 32:05Speaker 8: was I feel like they bulked them out and made
- 32:08Speaker 8: them look More like a cohesive design where it had Predators.
- 32:14Speaker 8: It was still Predator, but it just looked, I think
- 32:17Speaker 8: maybe the linebacker battle armor for the Predator looked better
- 32:23Speaker 8: than a big shiny Corvette on your head and fishnets.
- 32:28Speaker 8: That's just me, dude.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Each their own.
- 32:33Speaker 8: I'm allowed to be wrong to say that.
- 32:35Speaker 1: I mean, they aren't flying around in spaceships. It does
- 32:38Speaker 1: seem like they'd have like a space suit to some extent,
- 32:42Speaker 1: you know. I don't know if they don't need to
- 32:45Speaker 1: worry about the vacuum of space, but it seems like
- 32:48Speaker 1: you'd still want a cool, sporty spacesuit for, like, you know,
- 32:51Speaker 1: just looking cool as you come out of your spaceship
- 32:54Speaker 1: and go mess with the locals like you do when
- 32:57Speaker 1: you're flying around the universe. Yeah, yeah.
- 32:59Speaker 8: I mean, I guess if you're in the middle of Guatemala,
- 33:03Speaker 8: you'd probably, you know, dress down, dress for the occasion.
- 33:07Speaker 8: He does seem.
- 33:09Speaker 1: To go to a lot of hot locations. He does.
- 33:12Speaker 1: I gotta get this shirt off, man. Freaking 98 with humidity.
- 33:16Speaker 7: I ain't gonna do this.
- 33:18Speaker 8: It's like global warming. But he's still got this giant
- 33:21Speaker 8: space helmet. I don't know. Anyway. There's some things that
- 33:28Speaker 8: I think that movie does pretty darn good. They shoot
- 33:31Speaker 8: the alien. And the alien queen in that movie is
- 33:34Speaker 8: like amazing it's like you know just it's mostly practical
- 33:40Speaker 8: but but you know some the cg doesn't look cg
- 33:43Speaker 8: when it's running and it looks great the aliens move
- 33:46Speaker 8: great um the the fight scenes between the aliens and
- 33:50Speaker 8: the predators are great now there's all the dumb stuff
- 33:53Speaker 8: with the human characters so it's like a godzilla movie
- 33:56Speaker 8: it's like godzilla versus the smog monster you got to
- 33:59Speaker 8: get through the human characters but at least the human
- 34:02Speaker 8: characters are okay i think they're better than the human
- 34:06Speaker 8: characters in uh predator 2 but uh.
- 34:09Speaker 1: The recent american godzilla movies i keep going why are
- 34:12Speaker 1: these humans here yeah we're here to watch godzilla fight
- 34:16Speaker 1: king kong like quit talking and get to them fighting
- 34:20Speaker 1: and doing stuff and that stuff works so well but
- 34:22Speaker 1: every time they go back to me i'm like i
- 34:24Speaker 1: don't even know what your motivation is like i don't
- 34:28Speaker 1: like and i feel like even the actors are like
- 34:30Speaker 1: wait what are we doing.
- 34:30Speaker 8: In this scene They don't know.
- 34:33Speaker 1: And they have good actors sometimes. And I'm like, why
- 34:35Speaker 1: are you here? I guess this is a paycheck, but
- 34:38Speaker 1: I don't get it, man. No, no, no.
- 34:40Speaker 8: There's always been a Godzilla problem until... The Godzilla problem
- 34:44Speaker 8: was always the two different... terrible human scenes intruding in
- 34:50Speaker 8: an awesome Godzilla movie until, until this year zero came along,
- 34:54Speaker 8: you know?
- 34:55Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 34:55Speaker 7: I mean, again, that's why I said the American wins.
- 34:57Speaker 8: Like, yeah, yeah.
- 34:58Speaker 1: They're fun. Don't get me wrong. But yeah, when we,
- 35:00Speaker 1: when we had a real Godzilla movie again, it was like, Oh,
- 35:03Speaker 1: Oh no, that's, that's how you do a movie. Like
- 35:06Speaker 1: as actual characters, like Godzilla is like the supporting character.
- 35:09Speaker 8: In this movie.
- 35:10Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:11Speaker 8: Godzilla zero was like, yeah, it was like, I feel
- 35:14Speaker 8: like they fixed the Godzilla problem where they made, uh,
- 35:17Speaker 8: the human element as important as the Godzilla. Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 35:25Speaker 8: It was like, uh, it was like making it a
- 35:28Speaker 8: personal story about, you know, I mean, it was just
- 35:31Speaker 8: kind of like everybody. has a Godzilla to defeat in
- 35:35Speaker 8: their life. But this poor mofo, his Godzilla is actually Godzilla.
- 35:39Speaker 1: He's got a lot of problems before Godzilla shows up.
- 35:44Speaker 1: That guy's got problems. He's got problems.
- 35:46Speaker 8: He's got problems. Anyway, anyway.
- 35:49Speaker 1: Do we even count Requiem? Because I don't even remember.
- 35:52Speaker 1: I feel like I watched it the first time it
- 35:54Speaker 1: came out and I blocked it out even in the
- 35:57Speaker 1: middle of the movie, maybe.
- 35:58Speaker 7: I don't remember. I just know everyone talks bad about
- 36:01Speaker 7: that movie.
- 36:03Speaker 8: It is the revenge of the Sith of the Predator movies.
- 36:08Speaker 8: So it's the best one. Right, absolutely. It brings it
- 36:11Speaker 8: all together. It is probably the lowest point. I had
- 36:17Speaker 8: not seen it until this week. Because when I saw
- 36:21Speaker 8: the trailer where it was going to be Alien and
- 36:23Speaker 8: Predator in small town USA, I was going like, absolutely not.
- 36:29Speaker 1: They barely made it work in LA.
- 36:31Speaker 7: This is not going to happen.
- 36:33Speaker 8: Absolutely. This is the sci-fi channel version of this franchise.
- 36:41Speaker 8: I did not go see it. Then I watched it
- 36:44Speaker 8: on streaming this week and it was just as bad
- 36:48Speaker 8: as the trailer made it look. I would say it
- 36:52Speaker 8: has cool shots of the Predator but So for me,
- 37:00Speaker 8: it was like the Revenge of the Sith thing where
- 37:02Speaker 8: I go like, wow, I'm watching Star Wars stuff happen,
- 37:06Speaker 8: but I don't know where anything is going or what's happening.
- 37:10Speaker 8: It's just things to look at. It's kind of like
- 37:13Speaker 8: looking at somebody's display case of Star Wars figure.
- 37:20Speaker 1: Well, I will return to the Star Wars thing later.
- 37:24Speaker 1: But for now, I'm just saying I've avoided that movie
- 37:28Speaker 1: since I think I tried to watch it. I don't
- 37:31Speaker 1: even remember. Like, I remember nothing about Requiem. I at
- 37:33Speaker 1: least remember watching the first one. But I don't even
- 37:36Speaker 1: remember anything about Requiem.
- 37:38Speaker 8: It's so garbage. It's so garbage. It's like all the bad.
- 37:41Speaker 8: It's like, talk about just them being not distinguished characters.
- 37:45Speaker 8: What Predator has is distinguished characters. And then Predator 2 has, like,
- 37:51Speaker 8: you know, stereotype, you know, characters. Caricatures. And then AVP
- 37:57Speaker 8: has whatever comic book-y stuff P.T. Anderson is doing. You know,
- 38:01Speaker 8: it's not really even about the characters. But then by
- 38:04Speaker 8: the time you get to Requiem, it's not about anything.
- 38:07Speaker 8: And really, it's just the people are all completely indistinguishable
- 38:13Speaker 8: from each other. And nobody has any kind of arc.
- 38:15Speaker 8: They're just there to get attacked by predators and aliens.
- 38:19Speaker 8: And there's no point. This movie has no point to exist.
- 38:23Speaker 8: It's not saying anything. And I'm not trying to sound
- 38:26Speaker 8: like Mr. Arty Farty Filmmaker. Like a movie should be
- 38:29Speaker 8: about something. But Predator is about something. And it gives
- 38:34Speaker 8: the movie a skeleton to hang on. And the sequels
- 38:38Speaker 8: aren't about anything. Until recently. And Requiem is the worst
- 38:46Speaker 8: case example of that. Where it's really... It just feels
- 38:51Speaker 8: like a guy with a camera shooting fan footage of
- 38:55Speaker 8: Aliens and Predators. It feels like a YouTube fan movie.
- 38:59Speaker 8: It's that terrible.
- 39:04Speaker 1: Then we hit the dry spell, as you mentioned. Right.
- 39:07Speaker 3: So....
- 39:09Speaker 1: The thing is, there was supposed to be, I guess
- 39:12Speaker 1: the closest to a potential three was Robert Rodriguez.
- 39:17Speaker 7: Because he was super into the Predator thing.
- 39:21Speaker 1: So it says that he had originally written a screenplay
- 39:25Speaker 1: as a continuation after 2. And it was basically going
- 39:30Speaker 1: to be almost like a gladiator situation. We were going
- 39:34Speaker 1: to get more of the Predators going to get people,
- 39:37Speaker 1: bringing them back to whatever this planet was, and hanging
- 39:40Speaker 1: out watching people fight each other. And it was supposed
- 39:43Speaker 1: to involve Schwarzenegger because they were going to come get him,
- 39:46Speaker 1: I guess, and bring him there to fight. It's basically
- 39:48Speaker 1: the Ragnarok of... predator movies. So you were going to
- 39:52Speaker 1: see Dutch fighting a predator in the middle of an arena,
- 39:54Speaker 1: according to, you know, what they said he was working on.
- 39:57Speaker 8: Dude, that would have been awesome.
- 39:59Speaker 1: At that point, Schwarzenegger was not really an actor anymore.
- 40:02Speaker 1: He was a politician. So that went on ice and, uh,
- 40:07Speaker 1: sat there for 15 years, more or less. And then
- 40:09Speaker 1: eventually when he got back to it, he sort of
- 40:12Speaker 1: still came on as producer and I think was involved
- 40:15Speaker 1: in the storytelling version of it. But yeah, he handed
- 40:18Speaker 1: it off as a director. So yeah, Then we get Predators.
- 40:23Speaker 1: In an aliens move, we get Predators.
- 40:27Speaker 8: Right. 2010. Right.
- 40:29Speaker 7: Which I have one big problem with.
- 40:32Speaker 1: Do it.
- 40:33Speaker 5: Do it.
- 40:33Speaker 1: From the get-go, from the first time I saw the trailer,
- 40:37Speaker 1: I went, okay, so our big military tough guy, our
- 40:44Speaker 1: Arnold Schwarzenegger carrying a gun in this movie is Adrian Brody? Shit.
- 40:49Speaker 1: that is my main issue and it was initially because
- 40:53Speaker 1: I feel like he is massively miscast but on top
- 40:57Speaker 1: of that I did go back and rewatch this one
- 40:59Speaker 1: this week and I'm like Man, I don't like Adrian Brody.
- 41:02Speaker 7: Like, as time's gone on, now I have so much.
- 41:04Speaker 1: Personal, like, real world stuff. Oh, okay. Well, again, like,
- 41:09Speaker 1: we just gave him another Oscar. I'm not going to
- 41:11Speaker 1: say he can't act. Right. In his fancy Oscar movies,
- 41:15Speaker 1: don't get me wrong, I've heard great things about this
- 41:17Speaker 1: thing we just gave him an Oscar for, but I'm like...
- 41:19Speaker 1: He got up there to make a speech, and he
- 41:21Speaker 1: came off like an asshole.
- 41:22Speaker 8: I'm like, I don't like this guy.
- 41:25Speaker 1: The words he was saying was nice, and they meant something,
- 41:28Speaker 1: and they were about family and horrible things we've done
- 41:32Speaker 1: in our history. I get it that it was about something,
- 41:34Speaker 1: but the way he presented it, the way he spit
- 41:37Speaker 1: his gum out as he walked up on stage... And
- 41:40Speaker 1: then sat there, and as they tried to get him
- 41:43Speaker 1: to shut up, he told them to stop playing the music.
- 41:45Speaker 8: Oh, wow.
- 41:46Speaker 1: This isn't my first rodeo. I've already been up here
- 41:48Speaker 1: and won an Oscar. Oh, yeah. Yeah, you're great. You're
- 41:51Speaker 1: real great. Quit being an asshole. So I just don't
- 41:54Speaker 1: like Adrian Brody is what I've discovered over the years.
- 41:58Speaker 8: I got it.
- 41:58Speaker 1: So going back to watch this, I'm like, now it's
- 42:00Speaker 1: just a one-two punch of, like, I can't take you
- 42:03Speaker 1: at all. I can't take you seriously in the role
- 42:05Speaker 1: because you're massively miscast. And on top of that, I
- 42:08Speaker 1: just don't like you as a person. So way too
- 42:11Speaker 1: much of the screenplay is built around you to just
- 42:14Speaker 1: sort of not pay attention to you. So that's the
- 42:17Speaker 1: biggest hurdle for me. Other than that, I think there's
- 42:19Speaker 1: some interesting things in this movie. It's just Adrian Brody.
- 42:25Speaker 8: This is the problem.
- 42:26Speaker 1: I can overlook the Topher Grace of it all. That's
- 42:30Speaker 1: the one I can be like, yeah, whatever. That's weird,
- 42:32Speaker 1: but whatever. But that one I can write off.
- 42:35Speaker 7: But, yeah, I can't get over.
- 42:36Speaker 1: The Adrian Brody.
- 42:37Speaker 8: Yeah, I forgot Topher Grace was in this. I did, too.
- 42:41Speaker 8: The credit came up, and I went, oh, yeah.
- 42:44Speaker 1: I forgot.
- 42:46Speaker 8: Well, he was just hanging up from behind the tree.
- 42:50Speaker 8: I didn't remember him showing. And it was like, Topher
- 42:53Speaker 8: Grace is in this? And it wasn't like, oh, yay.
- 42:57Speaker 1: It was like, oh, no. Well, I think that's what
- 43:00Speaker 1: everyone says when they see his name in a movie, credits.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Topher Grace is in this? The thing is, I mean,
- 43:07Speaker 1: he's easy to make fun of, and we certainly have
- 43:09Speaker 1: over the years on this show. We watched a whole
- 43:12Speaker 1: horror movie with.
- 43:13Speaker 7: Him in it, and it was just Chopra Grace jokes
- 43:14Speaker 7: the whole time.
- 43:15Speaker 8: But he's not.
- 43:17Speaker 1: A bad actor. Like, in the right role, he can
- 43:19Speaker 1: do amazing work. Like, him in the... what's the black
- 43:24Speaker 1: clansman he's amazing and you give him a really heavy
- 43:29Speaker 1: role to play and i'm like dude he brought it
- 43:31Speaker 1: like he is good in that movie yeah so i'm
- 43:33Speaker 1: like you give him the right role he can do
- 43:37Speaker 1: really good work with it but you give him this
- 43:40Speaker 1: or trying to be venom like you know it's like
- 43:43Speaker 1: you miscast him in these weird roles and it's just
- 43:45Speaker 1: like what what is topher grace doing here like I
- 43:49Speaker 1: think there's also that.
- 43:50Speaker 8: This is the problem. There's just an overall unlikability to
- 43:57Speaker 8: everybody in that movie. And yeah, Adrian Brody, I've seen
- 44:03Speaker 8: him in movies that I think he's really great in.
- 44:05Speaker 8: I don't know. He's probably an asshole, but I mean, whatever.
- 44:08Speaker 8: I like him in some movies, you know?
- 44:10Speaker 7: He can be good in movies. I won't discredit him
- 44:14Speaker 7: as an actor. I just don't like him personally.
- 44:16Speaker 8: Yeah, there's like... This movie he did called The Jacket.
- 44:20Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. That's one of my go-tos. I remember seeing
- 44:23Speaker 1: that and thinking it was a great movie.
- 44:26Speaker 8: Absolutely.
- 44:26Speaker 7: And he happens to be good in it.
- 44:28Speaker 8: Absolutely. But from Schwarzenegger to Danny Glover... To Adrian Brody.
- 44:37Speaker 8: And he bulked up and whatever for the role.
- 44:40Speaker 1: He tried, but it still doesn't. By the end, he
- 44:43Speaker 1: very definitely takes his shirt off. He's like, look, I
- 44:48Speaker 1: worked out in the gym every day to get this.
- 44:51Speaker 1: I'm going to show it off. And I'm like, yeah,
- 44:54Speaker 1: I mean, you look good, but I'm still not taking
- 44:56Speaker 1: you seriously. He still looks like Adrian Brody went to
- 44:59Speaker 1: the gym.
- 45:00Speaker 8: It's his sad little puppy dog eyes. You just don't
- 45:04Speaker 8: believe that this guy is a cold-hearted mercenary. Not at all.
- 45:09Speaker 8: He plays sensitive, tortured, psychological roles and everything. He's like, oh,
- 45:16Speaker 8: you know, and pathos. And he's not the person that's
- 45:24Speaker 8: described in the story.
- 45:26Speaker 1: No. No. He just doesn't feel right from the second
- 45:30Speaker 1: he shows up.
- 45:31Speaker 8: It's a vibe. And you don't believe him seeing these
- 45:35Speaker 8: lines of like, yeah, that's what I would have done.
- 45:38Speaker 8: It's like those sad puppy dog eyes. They don't lie.
- 45:44Speaker 1: I'm going to go over here to Bush and cry now. Okay, Adrian,
- 45:49Speaker 1: you go over there. We're going to make a plan.
- 45:51Speaker 1: So you go cry or whatever you're going to do.
- 45:53Speaker 3: That's right.
- 45:53Speaker 8: You're going to go to random events. A poem about
- 45:56Speaker 8: the Predator or something like that. You believe that?
- 45:58Speaker 1: I wrote this for you.
- 45:59Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah.
- 46:01Speaker 1: My saving grace, I really like Alice Braga. And I think, again,
- 46:05Speaker 1: I feel like she should have been in more stuff
- 46:07Speaker 1: back in the day. And I think she's the only
- 46:10Speaker 1: person maybe, one or two, but she's the one I'm like, no,
- 46:13Speaker 1: I buy her in this role. She's doing good work.
- 46:17Speaker 1: She's actually believable in this. And the one that has...
- 46:21Speaker 1: sense to her where the rest of the again it's
- 46:24Speaker 1: a whole lot of macho bros so like there's some
- 46:26Speaker 1: stupid things going on and she's there going no idiots
- 46:29Speaker 1: look here's what you need to do like yeah agree
- 46:31Speaker 1: so she's the only one that seems to kind of
- 46:33Speaker 1: hold this little group together both acting wise and within
- 46:37Speaker 1: the story itself.
- 46:38Speaker 8: I agree i think she's good she gives a movie
- 46:41Speaker 8: a little bit of a nuance which has zero nuance
- 46:45Speaker 8: yeah otherwise it's it's just all you know, just a
- 46:50Speaker 8: bunch of indistinguishable from each other badasses. I mean, even
- 46:54Speaker 8: with Topher Grace, he really doesn't have any, it's just
- 46:57Speaker 8: nothing to look at. There's just, there's, it looks like
- 47:01Speaker 8: it was shot, you know, in somebody's backyard, you know.
- 47:05Speaker 8: I know we're supposed to be in the forest planet,
- 47:07Speaker 8: you know, or something, especially when you compare it to
- 47:10Speaker 8: what they can do nowadays with Badlands. You know, this
- 47:15Speaker 8: game preserve planet, it looks like, For a lot of
- 47:18Speaker 8: the shots, it looks like, you know, I think it
- 47:20Speaker 8: was shot in Texas and the woods are real sparse.
- 47:23Speaker 8: And it looks like, yeah, they went into Rodriguez's backyard,
- 47:26Speaker 8: you know, and like, you know, played guns. And, you know,
- 47:31Speaker 8: it kind of suffers a little bit from Robert Rodriguez's
- 47:34Speaker 8: backyard syndrome.
- 47:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:39Speaker 7: Like Rodriguez.
- 47:40Speaker 1: I think he does put together some really fun stuff.
- 47:43Speaker 1: Usually he's way more concerned with putting together this really cool,
- 47:49Speaker 1: fun idea than something heavy and worried about the details
- 47:53Speaker 1: of it. Watch your Spy Kids movies.
- 47:56Speaker 7: He's just worried about that kind of stuff.
- 47:58Speaker 1: He's just like, yeah, this was a cool idea and
- 48:00Speaker 1: I made it happen.
- 48:01Speaker 8: I'm down with him. I'm down with him. I'm not
- 48:04Speaker 8: throwing shade on him. The You know, there was just
- 48:08Speaker 8: something sort of, you know, I guess it just, it just,
- 48:13Speaker 8: there was a kind of a low budget aspect to
- 48:16Speaker 8: the movie. I mean, better than Predator Requiem, but still.
- 48:21Speaker 7: But I feel like there's an.
- 48:24Speaker 1: Center of this that could have been good like I
- 48:26Speaker 1: do like the idea again instead of us seeing them
- 48:29Speaker 1: get kidnapped and taken off to a gladiator match like
- 48:33Speaker 1: it is interesting like we've just heard that this is
- 48:36Speaker 1: you know the what the predators do they hunt people
- 48:38Speaker 1: so right to like get this other version of like
- 48:42Speaker 1: okay how do they get these people and what happens
- 48:45Speaker 1: do they know what's going on no I They wake
- 48:47Speaker 1: up being airdropped in.
- 48:49Speaker 8: I love it.
- 48:51Speaker 1: That's a cool concept. And then the fact that they
- 48:54Speaker 1: get there and they don't know what's going on, they
- 48:56Speaker 1: are around these other people, they don't know who to trust.
- 48:59Speaker 1: So it's like that basic idea is really cool. It
- 49:02Speaker 1: just never really goes any further than that. The whole
- 49:06Speaker 1: time it's just like, yeah, this is a cool idea,
- 49:08Speaker 1: but we're like 90 minutes in.
- 49:10Speaker 7: So what are we doing here?
- 49:12Speaker 8: That's it. I think the problem is the characters are
- 49:15Speaker 8: not interesting. So you're kind of just watching the mechanics.
- 49:20Speaker 8: of the story function, trying to get to the end,
- 49:24Speaker 8: but it all feels kind of a slog to get
- 49:26Speaker 8: through it because you're not connected to anybody because the
- 49:29Speaker 8: movie's not about anything.
- 49:32Speaker 1: It was interesting. This is sort of the first time... Well,
- 49:35Speaker 1: I mean, definitely the first when we get nothing but...
- 49:39Speaker 1: dudes with giant guns in the jungle and that's how
- 49:42Speaker 1: we start with this but it's interesting mixing in other
- 49:44Speaker 1: types of people yeah you know we got a serial
- 49:47Speaker 1: killer a serial killer a gang banging Danny Trejo type
- 49:51Speaker 1: yeah yeah who that is how they build him in
- 49:53Speaker 1: the script yeah when it was written it was a
- 49:55Speaker 1: Danny Trejo type which made its way to Danny and
- 49:58Speaker 1: he went uh Robert hey yeah I'm a Danny Trejo
- 50:03Speaker 1: type and that's how you got Danny Trejo in the
- 50:05Speaker 1: movie But even the Yakuza guy, that's a badass killer.
- 50:11Speaker 1: I like the idea of adding that element in. It's
- 50:14Speaker 1: just never really... Again, it just doesn't work up to
- 50:19Speaker 1: its potential.
- 50:20Speaker 8: Yeah, absolutely. There's a scene where a Yakuza guy has
- 50:28Speaker 8: the samurai sword and he's fighting the predator and you're
- 50:31Speaker 8: going like, this should.
- 50:34Speaker 8: This is a really cool idea right now.
- 50:36Speaker 1: That is one of the few times I'm like, okay,
- 50:38Speaker 1: here's somebody that again, doesn't seem like your big Arnold
- 50:42Speaker 1: Schwarzenegger type, but I'm like, this guy seems like he's
- 50:45Speaker 1: a bad-ass enough to be able to hold his own.
- 50:47Speaker 1: And with the predator in the fight, you know, it's
- 50:49Speaker 1: like you put the weapons down, you just have a
- 50:51Speaker 1: sword fight.
- 50:51Speaker 7: It's pretty cool.
- 50:52Speaker 1: Like, you know? Yeah.
- 50:54Speaker 8: So, so there's, there's the line and the thing was like,
- 50:56Speaker 8: we are the monsters of our world. And so they
- 50:58Speaker 8: brought us here, you know, and I, So I kind
- 51:01Speaker 8: of like that idea, but because there's, besides the female,
- 51:06Speaker 8: there really is no, they're not, they're not.
- 51:10Speaker 1: Young Mahershala Ali's got a moment or two. He's pretty
- 51:14Speaker 1: good at, you know, trying to bring a little something
- 51:17Speaker 1: to this role. Sure.
- 51:18Speaker 7: Even though, again, he's like from the.
- 51:20Speaker 1: Death squad or something. So the fact that we're starting
- 51:22Speaker 1: to like, oh, I really like this guy. Oh, no way. No,
- 51:24Speaker 1: these people are all terrible. Right.
- 51:28Speaker 7: Alton Goggins, he's the one I forgot was in it.
- 51:30Speaker 1: Me too! He was doing his most over-the-top Alton Goggins stuff,
- 51:35Speaker 1: but again, by the end, you're just like, the things
- 51:39Speaker 1: he keeps saying, you're like, but no, you're horrible. You
- 51:42Speaker 1: need to.
- 51:43Speaker 8: Die, dude.
- 51:45Speaker 1: It's hard to attach yourself to these characters.
- 51:47Speaker 8: That's it. That's the problem. It's hard to attach, and so,
- 51:50Speaker 8: you know, in Predator, you really, even though of all their,
- 51:54Speaker 8: you know.
- 51:56Speaker 8: Machismo and you know and all that you kind of
- 51:59Speaker 8: you like yeah they're bad jokes dude bro behavior dude
- 52:02Speaker 8: bro behavior you really like them you don't mind hanging
- 52:05Speaker 8: around them for 90 minutes and you kind of feel
- 52:07Speaker 8: bad when they get uh killed you know uh but
- 52:13Speaker 8: but these guys this is like a group of people
- 52:15Speaker 8: you just don't want to hang around for 90 minutes
- 52:18Speaker 8: with you know i mean and so it becomes becomes
- 52:20Speaker 8: like a jason movie where you just kind of waiting
- 52:23Speaker 8: for him to die. You're kind of waiting for the
- 52:24Speaker 8: movie to just sort of perfunctory.
- 52:26Speaker 7: And it takes a long time, really.
- 52:28Speaker 1: Other than we off Danny pretty quick, but the rest
- 52:30Speaker 1: of them hang around for a long time. And it's like, yeah,
- 52:33Speaker 1: it seems like you should be often at least one
- 52:36Speaker 1: by one. If we're doing this Jason style, you should
- 52:39Speaker 1: be taking them out a little faster, but it'll be
- 52:41Speaker 1: into the movie before we start taking them out. Yeah, yeah.
- 52:45Speaker 8: A lot of movie people, it seems like everybody that's
- 52:47Speaker 8: in this movie, you forget that it's in the movie.
- 52:49Speaker 8: Larry Fishburne shows up and I go like, oh, I
- 52:51Speaker 8: forgot he was in this.
- 52:53Speaker 1: Again, that's one of those, if ever, cash and a paycheck,
- 52:56Speaker 1: because they're like, he's got less than 15 minutes screen time,
- 52:59Speaker 1: and yet they put him, like, on the poster, in
- 53:02Speaker 1: the trailer, like, they were billing, look, we got Larry Fishburne, yay! Like, yeah.
- 53:07Speaker 1: So it's just another one of those crazy person Larry
- 53:10Speaker 1: Fishburne roles that I feel like he was doing a
- 53:13Speaker 1: lot at this point. There was a few that he
- 53:15Speaker 1: falls into this, oh, look, look who showed up halfway
- 53:18Speaker 1: into this movie. Larry Fishburne, yay! Like.
- 53:22Speaker 8: He pulls up in his car, he gets out, throws
- 53:24Speaker 8: on a trench coat, says like, ah! Then he takes
- 53:27Speaker 8: off the trench coat and gets out of there. Check, please.
- 53:32Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 53:33Speaker 8: And Predators ends so terribly with, like, they kill the guy,
- 53:36Speaker 8: then there's no way off the planet, and then they
- 53:38Speaker 8: don't know how to end the movie, so they just
- 53:40Speaker 8: go like, let's figure out how to get off this
- 53:42Speaker 8: fucking planet. And then they walk off into the sunset,
- 53:45Speaker 8: and I'm going like, well... They just didn't know what
- 53:47Speaker 8: to do or how to satisfactorily close this movie out.
- 53:50Speaker 1: And even that, I was just like, as our doofus
- 53:54Speaker 1: leader keeps going, like, I can probably wing it. I
- 53:56Speaker 1: can figure out how to fly the ship. And I'm like,
- 53:58Speaker 1: all right, maybe. Maybe there's some basics to aviation there
- 54:02Speaker 1: that you can pick up on.
- 54:03Speaker 7: I've seen this in other sci-fi movies. You just sort
- 54:05Speaker 7: of wing it and fly the ship.
- 54:07Speaker 1: My thing is, you don't know where you are, like
- 54:09Speaker 1: not even on the planet, in.
- 54:11Speaker 7: The universe, like in the galaxy.
- 54:14Speaker 1: You have no idea where you are. How would you
- 54:16Speaker 1: navigate to get back home? For real. You don't speak
- 54:20Speaker 1: their language. You don't know their technology. Even if you
- 54:24Speaker 1: could wing it on the ship, how do you get
- 54:25Speaker 1: back home?
- 54:26Speaker 8: Yeah, exactly, dude. You're there's some problems there.
- 54:32Speaker 1: Yeah even they didn't know how to end that movie
- 54:34Speaker 1: and they kind of they were just like yeah whatever
- 54:37Speaker 1: were they thinking they were setting it up for a
- 54:39Speaker 1: sequel i don't know maybe i.
- 54:41Speaker 8: Don't it doesn't feel like it i mean maybe it
- 54:44Speaker 8: feels like it but it feels like uh they just
- 54:46Speaker 8: were out of ideas they.
- 54:48Speaker 1: Had like i don't know let's wrap this.
- 54:49Speaker 8: Up they had one idea, let's show predators. And then
- 54:53Speaker 8: once they did that, they were out of ideas. No,
- 54:59Speaker 8: it does kind of, but when we talk about mythology, yeah,
- 55:02Speaker 8: as you said, it does kind of like give us
- 55:04Speaker 8: another layer of the mythos, you know, predator two said, I,
- 55:08Speaker 8: this is part of the alien universe and predator three
- 55:12Speaker 8: predators kind of says like, Hey, sometimes they kidnap people
- 55:14Speaker 8: and put them in a game preserve and hunt them there.
- 55:16Speaker 1: Okay.
- 55:17Speaker 7: Well, and we start adding in other creatures, too.
- 55:21Speaker 1: So we get the, like, giant animals that they drop
- 55:25Speaker 1: down there with them, like, is the first wave of, like,
- 55:27Speaker 1: how can we take out these people? Which is weird.
- 55:30Speaker 1: I'm like, aren't you the ones that want to hunt them? Like,
- 55:32Speaker 1: why bother? Right. later it almost makes sense when they
- 55:34Speaker 1: have like hunting dogs then it kind of makes sense
- 55:37Speaker 1: but like those are just some other weird creature they
- 55:39Speaker 1: threw down there so i'm like what what what is
- 55:42Speaker 1: this accomplishing if you're the one supposed to be hunting
- 55:44Speaker 1: them but yeah so but we we then at least
- 55:47Speaker 1: widen the universe to okay here's some other alien creatures
- 55:50Speaker 1: that they hang around so yeah yeah we we continue
- 55:54Speaker 1: that on with the next movie definitely as we get
- 55:57Speaker 1: into predator dogs Predator dogs. Right.
- 56:00Speaker 8: Exactly. Exactly. Yeah. They have hunt dogs. That's kind of
- 56:03Speaker 8: a cool idea. They expanded it.
- 56:07Speaker 7: It does make sense.
- 56:08Speaker 1: Right.
- 56:09Speaker 8: Exactly. It fits in the universe.
- 56:10Speaker 1: As much as anything in this movie is going to
- 56:11Speaker 1: make sense.
- 56:12Speaker 8: It fits in the universe. It fits in the universe.
- 56:13Speaker 8: So after Predators left everybody lukewarm, how many years before
- 56:20Speaker 8: we got to the next one? I mean, it wasn't a...
- 56:22Speaker 8: It's like 2010 to 2018.
- 56:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:24Speaker 3: Okay.
- 56:24Speaker 1: Okay. So....
- 56:29Speaker 8: It's a good stretch. Almost another decade, all right? And
- 56:33Speaker 8: so they brought.
- 56:35Speaker 1: Did you re-watch this one this week?
- 56:37Speaker 8: No, I didn't.
- 56:38Speaker 7: See, I did, and I'd seen it.
- 56:40Speaker 1: Like, I guess when that first year it came out
- 56:42Speaker 1: at least. I don't know if I... I might have
- 56:44Speaker 1: gone to the theater to see this. I don't know, but... Right, right.
- 56:48Speaker 1: It is interesting because it's almost like then you gave...
- 56:53Speaker 1: the Predator franchise, you're like, what if we did a
- 56:56Speaker 1: funny one? He basically gave it to comedy writers. No
- 57:01Speaker 1: offense to Shane Black, who is a good writer, but
- 57:04Speaker 1: he is known for doing pretty humorous stuff, and Fred
- 57:09Speaker 1: Decker is a great guy, but he's also made really
- 57:13Speaker 1: funny movies, so it's like you gave it to these
- 57:16Speaker 1: two guys that, and I remember, I do remember thinking
- 57:19Speaker 1: this when I saw it the first time, it's like
- 57:20Speaker 1: you basically handed over one of their favorite franchises to
- 57:24Speaker 1: a couple of 12 year old boys and went, okay,
- 57:26Speaker 1: what do you guys want to do?
- 57:28Speaker 7: And they were just like, watch this.
- 57:30Speaker 1: And like, they just, they're giggling to themselves every step
- 57:33Speaker 1: of the way as they make this movie, because it
- 57:36Speaker 1: comes off as a comedy and it's got so many
- 57:39Speaker 1: little like shout outs to the previous movies and like
- 57:43Speaker 1: just so many little, and just sort of nerdy sci-fi
- 57:46Speaker 1: fan inside jokes and movie geek inside jokes that I'm
- 57:50Speaker 1: just like, it is just sort of made for that
- 57:53Speaker 1: purpose alone. And I don't know that it even like
- 57:56Speaker 1: plays for somebody who just likes predator movies. Yeah.
- 57:59Speaker 8: Yeah. I, I, so I'm kind of with you. I,
- 58:02Speaker 8: a lot of people hated this, but I had a
- 58:05Speaker 8: really good time watching it. So just from watching it
- 58:09Speaker 8: from what my memory of watching it going, like I'm
- 58:12Speaker 8: going like, man, that was a good time. You know,
- 58:14Speaker 8: I don't know if it's like.
- 58:16Speaker 1: You know, uh goofy as hell yeah it's like i
- 58:19Speaker 1: just re-watched it it's so goofy like it is just
- 58:23Speaker 1: a silly movie and they kind of know it like
- 58:26Speaker 1: it's not like they made a bad movie like they
- 58:29Speaker 1: knew what they were making like they they set out
- 58:31Speaker 1: to make this movie they wrote it she directed it
- 58:34Speaker 1: like they knew what they were making so it's just
- 58:36Speaker 1: kind of funny that Again, for a series of movies
- 58:41Speaker 1: that's been so serious up to this point, and definitely
- 58:43Speaker 1: coming off of Predators, taking itself super seriously. And then
- 58:48Speaker 1: you get to this, and it's just goofy as hell.
- 58:51Speaker 1: And it is fun, but you have to throw everything
- 58:54Speaker 1: out the window. You can't hold on to your old-timey
- 58:57Speaker 1: Predator love, because if you're expecting the Dutch movie, you're
- 59:02Speaker 1: going to be very upset.
- 59:03Speaker 8: Because this is.
- 59:04Speaker 1: Again, two 12 year old boys having fun playing with
- 59:07Speaker 1: their action videos.
- 59:08Speaker 8: Yeah and i think it was so good just to
- 59:11Speaker 8: see fred decker's name in a credit again and like
- 59:14Speaker 8: finally getting awesome getting out of movie jail for robocop
- 59:19Speaker 8: 3 you know it was like i mean you know
- 59:21Speaker 8: he's done his time let him put something out you
- 59:24Speaker 8: know let him write something.
- 59:26Speaker 1: Again, talking to him years ago, he even said that.
- 59:29Speaker 1: He was like, yeah, I know people don't like that movie,
- 59:31Speaker 1: but they came to me and said, hey, do you
- 59:34Speaker 1: want to make a RoboCop movie? And I went, yeah. What,
- 59:39Speaker 1: are you going to say no? I'm a big fan
- 59:41Speaker 1: of RoboCop. They came to me and said, you want
- 59:44Speaker 1: to make.
- 59:45Speaker 7: A RoboCop movie?
- 59:46Speaker 1: He's like, yeah, I know the deck is stacked against me,
- 59:49Speaker 1: but I don't care. I got to make a RoboCop movie.
- 59:52Speaker 3: That's it.
- 59:52Speaker 8: So, yeah, he kind of took.
- 59:55Speaker 1: He took, yeah, but I was like, yeah, he took
- 59:57Speaker 1: the heat for it. But I'm like, I can't blame him.
- 59:58Speaker 1: I would have done it too.
- 1:00:00Speaker 8: Absolutely. Absolutely. Go down swinging at least, you know.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: So this felt like that same thing. He loved the
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: Predators thing. And like he, well, he loved Predator as
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: a concept in the old movies. And like he got
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: to come play in the sandbox with his toys. And like,
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: that's fun, you know. It's not great, but it's fun. Yeah.
- 1:00:19Speaker 8: Yeah, I'm not mad at Fred Decker for making a
- 1:00:21Speaker 8: bad RoboCop 3 movie. I mean, this was the, you've
- 1:00:25Speaker 8: got so much goodwill from Night of the Creeps and
- 1:00:28Speaker 8: Monster Squad that, you know, you go like, ah, man,
- 1:00:31Speaker 8: sorry it didn't work out. But, you know, things don't
- 1:00:32Speaker 8: work out sometimes. And they were trying to PG-13 eyes
- 1:00:36Speaker 8: everything back then. So, you know, I mean, yeah.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: And you don't even have your lead anymore. So, again,
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: like the deck's stacked against it.
- 1:00:42Speaker 8: Deck is stacked against you, bro. and uh but but
- 1:00:46Speaker 8: uh yeah so it was great to see him and
- 1:00:48Speaker 8: i think the movie has like it's got a bigger
- 1:00:51Speaker 8: budget than uh whatchamacallit predators so they can do more
- 1:00:55Speaker 8: stuff and i mean i.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: Don't remember i was pretty good and it like the
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: effects you know for what they were doing and the
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: budget they had it looks pretty good.
- 1:01:03Speaker 8: Absolutely and and and here we go who would you
- 1:01:08Speaker 8: rather hang out with Adrian Brody being dour and trying
- 1:01:13Speaker 8: to act like tough guy or Thomas Jane with his
- 1:01:17Speaker 8: wacky little idiosyncratic performance in that movie. I think he's
- 1:01:21Speaker 8: so much better.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: The question is, do you want to hang out with
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: Olivia Munn all day? Yes, I want to hang out.
- 1:01:27Speaker 11: With Olivia Munn.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:01:29Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: To me, that's the geek thing. Like it is just
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: nothing but geek cred. Like Olivia Munn was like the
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: queen of the geeks at that point in time. And
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: they got her to be in this movie. Then they're like, well,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: what if we put Jake Busey in it? There's a
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: little tie to the old movie. Remember his dad was
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: in that one movie.
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: We got him for this one. So there's your little
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: geek tie in. Right. It's obviously a comedy. We're working
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: in Keegan. Michael Key is like doing jokes off. It
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: was like, we're back to the old bad jokes again.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: Like from the first movie, like, So it's like it's
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: so not taking itself seriously the whole way through.
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:02:05Speaker 8: Yeah, I remember watching it and I remember going like,
- 1:02:09Speaker 8: that was pretty good. I don't know what everybody's problem
- 1:02:11Speaker 8: with this, you know? I mean, I guess they like.
- 1:02:13Speaker 7: I think it's just because it's so silly.
- 1:02:15Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: No one had seen... Like, even Predator 2 took itself
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: relatively seriously. It wasn't as heavy as the first one,
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: but it took itself seriously. Where this movie does not. Like,
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: everything about this movie is just... Let's have fun, guys.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: It's just goofing around with the Predator property. You want
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: to make Predator dogs? Sure. Let's make dogs with dreadlocks.
- 1:02:36Speaker 8: Who gives a shit?
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: And they did.
- 1:02:40Speaker 8: Is it ridiculous?
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: Yes. Yes, it is.
- 1:02:43Speaker 8: Okay, I forgot that there's Predator dogs in that. Okay,
- 1:02:46Speaker 8: so I thought you were talking about the Predator dogs
- 1:02:48Speaker 8: from Predators, but no, there's Predator dogs.
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: No, this is, yeah, that's the one that has actual
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: Predator dogs. They have the Predator mouth, they have dreadlocks. No, wait,
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: I think the mouth is a little.
- 1:02:57Speaker 7: Different, but they definitely have dreadlocks.
- 1:03:00Speaker 8: Oh, my gosh.
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: That's hilarious.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: Also, this is a movie that describes the Predator as
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: if Whoopi Goldberg was an alien. In the movie. That's
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: not a smart-ass reviewer making that comment. In the movie,
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: they say that.
- 1:03:12Speaker 7: And I was like, so Guinan?
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: We already have that. What are you talking about?
- 1:03:16Speaker 8: Absolutely right.
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: So, yeah, I was just like, this movie is so ridiculous.
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: And it knows it, and it's having fun with it.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: So I think it's an all or nothing. You either
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: are okay with this movie or you hate this movie.
- 1:03:28Speaker 8: Right, because it doesn't take it seriously.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: It doesn't take the legacy of Predator's seat. I'm like, dude,
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: it's Predator. Calm down.
- 1:03:37Speaker 8: Everybody should chill.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: I agree it's ridiculous, but calm down.
- 1:03:42Speaker 8: Right, right. So I haven't seen it in a while.
- 1:03:45Speaker 8: What does it add, if anything, to the mythos of
- 1:03:49Speaker 8: what do we learn more about the Predator story?
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: Well, this is the one we... It's on Earth. The
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: creature sort of crash lands, and then it's almost Area 51.
- 1:04:02Speaker 7: We've got one in a.
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: We've almost got the ID4 room where they walk in,
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: and we've got one strapped to a table. So we've
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: got a Predator. Once again, the self-awareness of the guys
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: in the room are calling him the Predator. They nicknamed
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: him the Predator. And then joke within a joke, then
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: Olivia Munn's like, well, he's not really what you're describing
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: as a predator.
- 1:04:24Speaker 7: He's like a game hunter.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: Predator is, you know, like they're breaking down the terminology
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: of the entire franchise as being wrong. So like they're
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: making the joke about the whole predator as a whole,
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: as a concept. You're even calling it the wrong name.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: I love that. Like that's how like irreverent they are
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: about this. Like they don't care. So yeah, then the
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: difference is, and the thing I think that was most interesting,
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: and I totally forgot, this is also maybe one of
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: the first mainstream movies that started working in... characters on
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: the spectrum which.
- 1:04:59Speaker 10: I thought would be interesting right right right knowing we've
- 1:05:04Speaker 10: both seen kids with that issue and yeah our main
- 1:05:07Speaker 10: kid the kids that are making fun of him keep
- 1:05:10Speaker 10: keep making Asperger's jokes so I guess technically maybe I
- 1:05:13Speaker 10: don't think he ever says it or his mom ever.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: Says it but I guess he has Asperger's right and
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: then we also Thomas Jane's character has Tourette's so it's
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: like we've got all these weird spectrum issues going on
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: in this movie and like It's weird because... Surprisingly, it's
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: from the kid at least. Thomas Jane's a little cringy.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: But the kid, not bad. Usually they really... It's hard
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: to get somebody to do a performance that's even close
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: to what really goes on with somebody on the spectrum.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: Where this kid is just a little different, but he's
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: not overplaying it, which is the best thing you can
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: do in that kind of role.
- 1:05:51Speaker 8: Absolutely.
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: That was an interesting thing on the rewatch. There's a
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: whole lot of dealing with that. But yeah, as far
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: as the universe, we add in the fact that the
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: government knows about Predators. We have photos of him from
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: hanging off the building in LA back in the day.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: So they're like, they've got a dossier going on this
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: whole overrun process.
- 1:06:13Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:06:13Speaker 7: And then now we've got him trying to do tests
- 1:06:16Speaker 7: on him.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: And of course, then he wakes up and goes crazy
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: and kills everyone.
- 1:06:20Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: Right. And then he's just on the loose and they're
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: trying to not get killed by him and try to
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: get back to... Because then the guy finds his mask
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: and the arm piece and mails it to himself. But
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: it ends up going to his house and then the
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: kid has it. So he knows he's going after the technology.
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: So he's trying to get to it before he gets
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: to the kid and kills.
- 1:06:43Speaker 8: His son, essentially. Got it.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: That becomes the focus of the last half of the
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: movie is this race to get to the... the helmet
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: and the stuff before the Predator also gets.
- 1:06:54Speaker 7: There and kills his kid.
- 1:06:55Speaker 8: Got it. Are there multiple Predators in this one?
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: There is.
- 1:06:59Speaker 7: Well, this is where we get the Super Predator, too.
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: Super Predator. So we get the, and I, this, the
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: Super Predator is there, and it's, like, an 11-foot Predator. It's, like, huge.
- 1:07:10Speaker 8: Got it.
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: And, like, murders the other Predator, and then, like, we
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: chase him around for the whole last half of the movie.
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: Got it.
- 1:07:17Speaker 8: Got it.
- 1:07:17Speaker 7: Yeah, super predator and predator dogs.
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: Got it.
- 1:07:21Speaker 8: Well, they kind of do that than the predators because
- 1:07:24Speaker 8: that was kind of like something they talk about in
- 1:07:26Speaker 8: the Rodriguez one was like how there's kind of like
- 1:07:29Speaker 8: this blood feud between like the.
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: That was, yeah, the first time we saw that infighting
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: between predators.
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: Because you got the guy tied up that he frees
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: and then he's the one that kills the other predator.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: So our guys don't even kill the predator. The other
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: predator kills the predator.
- 1:07:45Speaker 8: Right, right. Yeah, yeah. So it's like... Yeah, so there's big,
- 1:07:49Speaker 8: big mega predators, and then there's little shrimpy predators. But yeah,
- 1:07:53Speaker 8: I think they did a better job with that concept
- 1:07:56Speaker 8: than the Shaman Black one.
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: But again, expanding that universe of characters and creatures as well.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: So now we've got different versions of predators, and we've
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: got the predator dogs that we had no idea existed,
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: but obviously shows there's a whole other piece of whatever. Like,
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: are they genetically creating these predator dogs? I don't know exactly. Right.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: they're trying to figure out some weird basic stuff. Cause
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: they also do a test on the predator and he's
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: got human DNA in him. So like, once again, the
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: silliness of this movie, Olivia Munn says, so do you
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: want to, you want to find out a human fucked
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: a predator or something to that.
- 1:08:32Speaker 8: Effect or vice versa.
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: So yeah, like there's weird stuff they're throwing into the
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: mythology here that I'm like, I don't even know where
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: they were going with it. They're just throwing out ideas.
- 1:08:44Speaker 8: Can we breathe some life into this? Uh, It can
- 1:08:48Speaker 8: just be a viable franchise that we can make a movie.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: Every three years.
- 1:08:52Speaker 7: And the answer was, no, not really.
- 1:08:53Speaker 8: Not yet. not yet.
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: Because then it died again.
- 1:08:56Speaker 8: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: DOA.
- 1:08:59Speaker 8: Yep, yep. But it deserves a better rep, I think.
- 1:09:03Speaker 8: It's a pretty fun movie. So, you know.
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: And it quotes its own movies like three or four times. Like,
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: it works in lines from the other movies... or variations
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: that are in jokes like it is so inside jokey
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: in its own little predator world it is ridiculous so
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: again i think that's the kind of stuff that people
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: are going to roll their eyes and write this movie
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: off so sure that's what happened for several more years
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: till we get to uh you know 2022.
- 1:09:30Speaker 8: And that's prey right but we finally got the first
- 1:09:34Speaker 8: it doesn't say predator right right anywhere in the title
- 1:09:38Speaker 8: it's the only one really They didn't call it Predator
- 1:09:41Speaker 8: colon Prey.
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: Predator slash Prey.
- 1:09:45Speaker 8: Predator slash Prey. Right, exactly.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: So I love this one. It kind of came out
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: of nowhere, and even because it didn't have that in
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: the title, people, I think, didn't know for sure that's
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: what it was until, I guess, maybe it's in the trailer,
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: and you were like, oh, wait, this is like a
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: Predator movie? They're rebooting Predator again? It's more or less
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: what it feels like they were doing.
- 1:10:07Speaker 8: Absolutely. Well, I had... it just not going theatrical from
- 1:10:12Speaker 8: what I remember. I think it just came out on Hulu.
- 1:10:16Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: But that's also coming out of a bad time for
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: things to go theatrical.
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: So I think that was part of it too.
- 1:10:26Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: I don't really know that. Maybe they just made a
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: deal to go straight to Hulu. I don't know.
- 1:10:30Speaker 8: But yeah, I don't, more importantly.
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: It's, it's, the first time we've handed it over to
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: Dan Trachtenberg. Right. So that's where I guess we're eventually
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: going to go to.
- 1:10:40Speaker 8: That's pretty much it.
- 1:10:42Speaker 7: He's the new king of the Predators.
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: Yes. And again, if ever you're a geek that feels seen, like...
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: Dan is like one of us, man. I knew Dan
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: as a podcaster, for God's sake. Oh, really?
- 1:10:55Speaker 8: Wow.
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: When I first started doing one, one of the few
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: that was out there that I was listening to, because
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: I had to go back and make sure. I was like,
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: I think this is what he was on. I think
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: he was on Slashfilm a lot. Oh, okay. slash film
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: cast was like one of the earlier podcasts specifically about
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: movies and like I couldn't remember if he was actually
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: like a rotating cast member but I think he was
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: just guest a lot like I remember him being on
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: there enough that I knew his name from that far
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: back yeah and then he also went on because then
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: he's part of a bunch of shows so he's then
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: let's see He was a host on geekdrome.com. He then
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: had a video show that was the Totally Rad Show
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: that he co-hosted with two other guys. And then at
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: that point, yeah, he started, I think he directed episodes
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: of Control Alt Chicken podcast, which I guess I need
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: to go find. So at that point, yeah, he was
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: just kind of on the geek side of things and
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: like doing that kind of stuff and started like directing
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: short films and And, like, obviously that's what he set
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: out to do, was be a director. But he just
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: sort of edged his way in doing short films. And
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: then he did an episode of Black Mirror. And then
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: he full-fledged kind of jumped into it and made, again,
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: what I think is one of the best horror movies
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: that gets lumped in as a sci-fi movie. But 10
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: Cloverfield Lane is amazing.
- 1:12:20Speaker 8: It's good.
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: And I was not prepared to like that near as much.
- 1:12:24Speaker 5: As I did.
- 1:12:25Speaker 8: Right, right. Absolutely.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: Yeah, he got.
- 1:12:28Speaker 8: He got in the J.J. Abrams circle and got some
- 1:12:31Speaker 8: real money to work with and showed that he could
- 1:12:33Speaker 8: handle it.
- 1:12:33Speaker 7: And did the best movie out of them.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: I like Cloverfield alright, but 10 Cloverfield Lane is so
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: much better.
- 1:12:40Speaker 7: Just as a film. As a concept and as a film.
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: It is solid.
- 1:12:46Speaker 7: And like Cloverfield just feels like an experiment.
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: Like, can we do it like this? Like it felt
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: like them presenting this idea in a, in a world
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: that was about to be overrun with found footage movies.
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: It was like, can we make this work? And yeah,
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: they can, but which do I want to go back
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: and watch again? Yeah. It's Tim Cloverfield. Right. Right.
- 1:13:07Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:13:07Speaker 8: Yeah. It's a cool movie.
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: Um, yeah.
- 1:13:11Speaker 8: Yeah, so I don't, I gotta say, I did not
- 1:13:14Speaker 8: go back and revisit Prey before watching this, but I
- 1:13:19Speaker 8: do just, I have nothing but fond memories of it.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: It's just such a like a hardcore version of this idea,
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: you know, because it's it's the first time we go
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: back in time. Like we're not doing modern era, you know,
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: before it was modern era out in the jungles. And
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: then we had future in quotation marks, L.A. like we're
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: back in the jungles again. So everything's modern day now.
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: But we've alluded to over the years in this mythology
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: that they've been doing this for years and years and generations.
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: So we go all the way back to before the
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: stupid white people showed up in this country. So we've
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: got these native characters that are here. And the fact
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: that they speak their own language the whole time. The
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: whole thing is presented as if it's their story. And
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: once again, kind of like the first movie. It's their
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: story telling this version of, once again... something totally different.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: We have a female protagonist for God's sakes, like, and
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: she's good. Like she's really solid and like carries this movie.
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: And so like the fact that we're telling her story
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: and her dealing with what's going on in her tribe
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: and like all this other stuff. And then like the
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: first movie, Oh, by the way, an alien shows up
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: trying to hunt people. Like, yeah. So again, it's like
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: revisiting that concept of, but in a new and pretty
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: serious way. Not that it's not fun, but not silly
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: like the last movie. It takes itself seriously again, so
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: much so that we're immersed in this tribe and the
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: whole thing is kind of from their perspective and that
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: time period perspective and it's not winking at the camera
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: doing silly stuff like the last movie. It's back to
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: being a serious movie about this woman.
- 1:15:08Speaker 8: The good Predator movies seem to have a point of
- 1:15:12Speaker 8: view and being told from an interesting point of view
- 1:15:17Speaker 8: from predator with like the, the, the, the, the, the
- 1:15:22Speaker 8: band of brothers point of view. And then with prey
- 1:15:25Speaker 8: from a, an Indian tribe point of view and, and
- 1:15:29Speaker 8: the dynamics within the tribe and treating that with, with
- 1:15:35Speaker 8: real respect and like going like, okay, this is like
- 1:15:37Speaker 8: a real world. You know, there's a certain amount of
- 1:15:40Speaker 8: what it feels like. you know, Predator, you can actually,
- 1:15:44Speaker 8: it feels real like these guys would have to be
- 1:15:47Speaker 8: that way to survive in the world that they live in, right?
- 1:15:51Speaker 8: Predator 2 feels like a bunch of actors playing Law
- 1:15:54Speaker 8: and Order. You know, they don't, it doesn't feel real,
- 1:15:59Speaker 8: you know? But Prey, you can kind of get into
- 1:16:03Speaker 8: that world, you know, and go like, oh, this is
- 1:16:05Speaker 8: being told from a, this is like not just going
- 1:16:08Speaker 8: to be a retread, We're actually going to tell it
- 1:16:11Speaker 8: from an interesting environment, you know, and a new point
- 1:16:16Speaker 8: of view looking at this story. So which is a
- 1:16:19Speaker 8: good reason to make a sequel. We've got a reason
- 1:16:22Speaker 8: to exist here. How does this story play out in
- 1:16:26Speaker 8: this environment, you know?
- 1:16:28Speaker 7: I mean, everything is kind of new. It's like it's
- 1:16:30Speaker 7: a new perspective. It's a new time period.
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: It's new in the Predator sense because it's also old-timey Predator.
- 1:16:38Speaker 7: So we got like a bone mask and like our.
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: Technology is way more rudimentary. It's still like way more
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: evolved than the tribe as far as weaponry and space travel, obviously.
- 1:16:48Speaker 7: But like it's still.
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: pretty like primal compared to where we get in the
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: rest of them where they have you know all the
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: crazy laser attachments and all the stuff that the mask
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: does for them and like all this other technology that
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: they're reliant on that like there's not near as much
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: of that with this predator so even the predator itself
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: is a different version of the predator well it.
- 1:17:08Speaker 8: Makes it more i guess mythic what i what i
- 1:17:11Speaker 8: like about the thing about the predator is because it's
- 1:17:14Speaker 8: been around for so long where they talk about it
- 1:17:16Speaker 8: in the in the first one where it would seem
- 1:17:19Speaker 8: like this evil spirit. They keep calling it the demon.
- 1:17:22Speaker 8: And even in Predator 2, they call it the demon
- 1:17:24Speaker 8: a few times, where it's like, you know... like some
- 1:17:27Speaker 8: kind of bad voodoo spirit.
- 1:17:29Speaker 7: Because it's a serial killer in this film.
- 1:17:31Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: They're like, who's this weird guy that keeps stringing people
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: up and ripping their spines out?
- 1:17:36Speaker 7: It just seems like part of Seven for a minute there.
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: Yeah. They're on the crime scene, blood and guts everywhere.
- 1:17:44Speaker 8: It's true.
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: This killer is doing weird stuff to the bodies. And
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, that's Seven. I watched that movie. I
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: like that one.
- 1:17:50Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah. It is kind of part of the serial
- 1:17:52Speaker 8: killer phase.
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: It was for a minute. A little bit, yeah.
- 1:17:57Speaker 8: Yeah, but, so, so, yeah, but, you know, you think of, like,
- 1:17:59Speaker 8: things like the Windingo and, like, you know, you know,
- 1:18:02Speaker 8: it seems like the Predator would just fit right into, like, the, the,
- 1:18:07Speaker 8: the Native American, it kind of does, you know, kind of.
- 1:18:09Speaker 7: A mythology of everything.
- 1:18:12Speaker 8: Yeah, the, the, the Predator kind of feel of, you know.
- 1:18:16Speaker 8: hunters and tribal and there's always something kind of you
- 1:18:20Speaker 8: know uh ancient you know indian culture about it you
- 1:18:24Speaker 8: know uh you know with like a lot of the
- 1:18:26Speaker 8: mayan kind of look of everything it.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: Is tied more to their life than like you know
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: your la cops you know so it's like yeah the
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: tribes and the hunting is very rooted so again that's
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: why this story is so different and important you know
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: in what they're trying to do is because it's the
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: parallels between the two and like so what happens when
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: you come up against somebody who is also living this
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: kind of life and is also pretty hardcore and is
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: ready to take you on and like yeah that's sort
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: of what the first movie was and then we sort
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: of returned it in a whole different way in.
- 1:19:00Speaker 8: Prey absolutely Dang. Yeah, Prey's pretty awesome.
- 1:19:05Speaker 7: Prey is really awesome.
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: Which is why I was going into it going, oh man,
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: they gave it to the right guy.
- 1:19:10Speaker 8: Yeah, he gets it.
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: He's taking it seriously and he's involved in what the
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: mythology is supposed to be and what he wants to
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: do with it. yeah but then like moving forward like
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: then he also like that you can see that planting
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: the seed of like okay well now we've established that
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: this has gone on for thousands of years at least
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: if not you know who knows how long so we're
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: going back in time you can take all these different
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: little snapshots of people and places and insert a predator
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: and you've got a whole new story so that's the
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: next movie that comes out is killer of killers And, like,
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: it is that version done, like, three different times.
- 1:19:50Speaker 7: So I know you said you hadn't seen this one yet, right?
- 1:19:51Speaker 8: I haven't seen it yet. I haven't seen it. So
- 1:19:53Speaker 8: don't spoil it, but tell me kind of the gist.
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: I will, but it is, yeah, this one is animated,
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: and it does basically just take a little snapshot of, like,
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: three different characters that's sort of the same type of
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: thing that was going on in Prey. So we go
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: to Scandinavia in 841 with Viking warriors. Oh, dude. Again,
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: we're just taking the greatest warriors of all time now
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: and inserting a predator into the story.
- 1:20:20Speaker 7: So we go back to Viking times.
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: Then we go to 1609 Japan and we pull in
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: a samurai. And then we go to World War II
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: and we pull in a fighter pilot. So it's like
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: we've got these... people from battles and all different parts
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: of time and space and, you know, anywhere that's going
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: on in our history. Anyway, we're pulling these characters from,
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: and this is more of that original, like Rodriguez idea.
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: Cause then they take them back to do battle essentially.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: So it is more of like a, a arena type
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: of battle then. So that, that is more or less
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: where it goes again. I won't go too far into it,
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: but it is, it is really cool that we're doing
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: that same thing of taking, uh, different perspectives and different
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: warriors with a different take on how they approach battle
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: and how they approach being a warrior themselves and what,
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: what it is they're supposed to do when they have
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: an enemy that they come up against. Cause they each
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: kind of have a different take on how they deal
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: with this. So it's really well done and the animation
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: looks good. And yeah, so it's, it's, it's worth seeing,
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: even if it wasn't also, you know, done by Dan Trachtenberg.
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: So I thought maybe it would have even been farmed out,
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: but no, he's, he's involved in this just as much
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: as the other one.
- 1:21:40Speaker 8: Yeah, he seems to be getting... He's kind of quiet on...
- 1:21:44Speaker 8: a pulse on how to expand this out and actually meet,
- 1:21:47Speaker 8: make it mean something, you know?
- 1:21:51Speaker 7: And again, like if, if he were a lesser filmmaker,
- 1:21:54Speaker 7: I think.
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: This could have fallen flat or just seem like cashing
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: in because, Oh, that made money. So now we're going
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: to do this one. And when I saw this coming out,
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: I was like, wait, they're doing two predator movies in
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: the same year. Yeah. Yeah. Once again, I thought it
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: was different people. I thought like a whole different crew
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: is making the animated one. And then Dan was coming
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: back to do the theatrical one. But no, it was
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: him doing both of them because he said because Prey
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: was received so well that he then had this idea
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: of three.
- 1:22:23Speaker 7: New things to do.
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: And because Prey had done well, he kind of had
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: the green light to start doing them. And because... the
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: animated one, you know, the animation at least was going
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: to be not him hands on every day. He could
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: start working on the film part of that one while
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: still sort of running the, the overall take of how
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: everything was going in the animated one, but be working
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: on the live action. So that's how he got them
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: kind of rolling at the same time and how we
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: got to in the same year.
- 1:22:52Speaker 8: That's pretty great, man. Pretty great.
- 1:22:54Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:22:54Speaker 8: I got to check that one out today and everything, or,
- 1:22:56Speaker 8: you know, this week, uh, uh, yeah, that sounds great.
- 1:23:00Speaker 8: That sounds like a good concept.
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:23:02Speaker 8: It's kind of like cool. It was like the predator
- 1:23:04Speaker 8: is like this thing that like feeds off the bad
- 1:23:07Speaker 8: vibes of, uh, the, the earth, you know, or other
- 1:23:11Speaker 8: places too. I guess, you know, it was like, uh,
- 1:23:12Speaker 8: you know, all you do is hear about this, uh,
- 1:23:15Speaker 8: all the war, you know, it kind of like takes
- 1:23:17Speaker 8: like headlines, you know, the Guatemala, uh, you know, our involvement,
- 1:23:22Speaker 8: political involvement in, uh, Guatemala. And then like the LA problems, uh,
- 1:23:27Speaker 8: You know, and then... The.
- 1:23:30Speaker 7: Worst parts of humanity.
- 1:23:31Speaker 8: That's what we're looking for. The worst parts of humanity. Yeah,
- 1:23:34Speaker 8: I guess the Rodriguez one, you know, the... All the different.
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: Serial killers and Yakuza.
- 1:23:39Speaker 8: Serial killers and Yakuza.
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: Gangbangers.
- 1:23:41Speaker 8: Gangbangers. All the, you know, death squads. All the bad,
- 1:23:46Speaker 8: you know, the human conflict, the war and everything.
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: The people.
- 1:23:51Speaker 8: Man's inhumanity to man, and Predator's this being that feeds
- 1:23:56Speaker 8: off that.
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: It's like, this is exactly what I'm looking for.
- 1:24:00Speaker 8: That's exactly what I'm looking for.
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: Right, right.
- 1:24:02Speaker 8: If it was like a kumbaya planet, nobody would.
- 1:24:07Speaker 7: He just shows up and just shrugs.
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: Like, what am I going to do with you damn hippies?
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: You're not even going to give me anything. You're not
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: even a challenge. You're wasting my time.
- 1:24:17Speaker 7: And he closes the door and flies off.
- 1:24:20Speaker 8: That's right. But it comes down. They're like, peace, man.
- 1:24:23Speaker 8: Puts a little flower in his silver cannon.
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: You're like, I'm out of here. You guys suck. nuke
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: the planet from orbit.
- 1:24:34Speaker 8: Just to be safe yeah just to be safe just.
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: To be sure speaking of crossover universes just to be.
- 1:24:39Speaker 12: Safe that's right um heading into the badlands I guess
- 1:24:46Speaker 12: we should officially if we're calling this our movie of
- 1:24:49Speaker 12: the our.
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: Movie of the episode uh technically I know it was
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: a little bit of a.
- 1:24:56Speaker 8: Lead up it was get.
- 1:24:59Speaker 5: More out of life Go out to.
- 1:25:06Speaker 3: A movie.
- 1:25:20Speaker 11: So this is your first hunt. And you've come to
- 1:25:27Speaker 11: the most dangerous planet in the universe. You're after a
- 1:25:54Speaker 11: creature that can't be killed. The definitive apex predator.
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: I could help you. Well, good luck with your journey.
- 1:26:20Speaker 11: Here, you're not the predator.
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: You're the prey.
- 1:26:51Speaker 11: We might not be alone in this hunt.
- 1:27:20Speaker 3: Looking through the forest Around the mountainside Moving through the
- 1:27:28Speaker 3: darkness I'm a creature of the wild Sneaking up behind
- 1:27:35Speaker 3: you Hunting in a pen Attacking out of nowhere.
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: Our out on the town feature is Predator Badlands. The
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: year is 2025, the director Dan Trachtenberg, and they plot,
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: according to IMDB, A young predator outcast from his clan
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: finds an unlikely ally on his journey in search of
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: the ultimate adversary. Spoiler alert, we're going to ruin the
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: hell out of this as much as we've probably done
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: with most of the other ones, except the last one.
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: I kept the last one pretty minimal because it's all
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: so new, but this one we'll probably go ahead and
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: lay into it. So, you have been warned. And this
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: is also kind of the first time we've shipped sides
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: because every time we're we're following a human character of
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: some sort some humanoid from wherever that like is our
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: protagonist and the bad guy in quotes is the predator
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: right so we've never really had a predator main character before.
- 1:28:58Speaker 8: Dude that was what, for me, was such a breath
- 1:29:04Speaker 8: of fresh air about this movie, was telling it from
- 1:29:07Speaker 8: the Predator's point of view, was, like, I think the
- 1:29:11Speaker 8: Rosetta Stone that just made this movie so special. And
- 1:29:17Speaker 8: with the advances of makeup effects, and I guess maybe
- 1:29:22Speaker 8: there was some CG altering to it, I couldn't tell.
- 1:29:25Speaker 8: I can't tell you when... what was CG and what was,
- 1:29:28Speaker 8: you know, practical in this movie.
- 1:29:30Speaker 7: Which that's when you know, it's good.
- 1:29:32Speaker 8: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:29:33Speaker 7: Again, it all has a signature look.
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: Like I think it definitely had, you know, a lot
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: of background stuff that was probably not physically there, but
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: it doesn't look bad ever. And I think it all
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: matches with what's going on within the story, within the foreground.
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: So it's like, I think it all looked good from
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: that element too.
- 1:29:52Speaker 8: But from just from our main character predators point of view,
- 1:29:57Speaker 8: from his, he gets a lot of performance in this movie.
- 1:30:02Speaker 3: You know?
- 1:30:03Speaker 8: He's actually, it's actually a well-acted lead person who you
- 1:30:09Speaker 8: want to hang around for 90 minutes and see what they,
- 1:30:13Speaker 8: how they get out of this mess. It was something
- 1:30:17Speaker 8: that was so missing in most of these Predator movies
- 1:30:20Speaker 8: that I was watching. After part one, this was like,
- 1:30:24Speaker 8: I was like, going into Badlands, and I was like, what,
- 1:30:29Speaker 8: two minutes late. So I came in, you have to
- 1:30:31Speaker 8: tell me what I missed. They were talking about what
- 1:30:33Speaker 8: alien they're going to catch. He was talking to his brother, like,
- 1:30:37Speaker 8: do you want this one or this one? So I
- 1:30:39Speaker 8: probably didn't miss much.
- 1:30:40Speaker 7: Pretty much where it starts. If Dad hadn't showed up,
- 1:30:44Speaker 7: it's pretty early.
- 1:30:45Speaker 8: Okay, Dad hadn't showed up yet. So, telling it from
- 1:30:49Speaker 8: the Predators society point of view, learning about the Predators
- 1:30:54Speaker 8: culture learning about what a dick a dad the predator
- 1:30:58Speaker 8: dads are.
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: That's what i'd heard again just because we're already going
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: into the dad thing so i'd heard it described beforehand
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: because i wanted to see it just when i saw
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: the trailer and knowing that they're bringing in a really
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: cool human character that like again we've had a bunch
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: of them like you don't care about but like Ella's
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: just so good in this so it's like I saw
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: her in the trailer I was like oh this is
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: already gonna be a step above what we've had in
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: in the olden times again not not the Dan versions
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: but anything before that you know you weren't getting that
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: level of performances so absolutely but then I also like
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: the the week before I heard it described as it's
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: a very Star Wars predator movie And I was like,
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: all right, let's see where we're going with this. So
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: they're not wrong. They fight with laser swords. There's now cute,
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: lovable creatures hanging out with them.
- 1:31:54Speaker 8: That's true.
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: And most importantly in any Star Wars movie, there's a
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: terrible father behind it. We have bad fatherhood issues going
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: on throughout the movie, which is maybe the most Star
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: Wars thing ever. So we also, you know, not to
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: jump ahead, but we also get a not-so-subtle carrying your
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: broken droid torso on your backpack.
- 1:32:18Speaker 8: Oh, jeez. I was like, oh, yeah.
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: That's very Empire. Yeah. There's a good amount of Star
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: Wars-iness to this, but in a good way. I know
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: that would almost be a backhanded compliment for most people now,
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: but I'm like, no, like in the Mandalorian way of
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: him hanging out with a sidekick, getting into adventures, and
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: trying to figure out how to get out of it.
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: That's kind of what we're dealing with here. It's like
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: he's still being sort of himself, and he's following his ways,
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: but he's... got this new character with him that's kind
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: of like changing the way he deals with things and
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: how do they get out of these crazy adventures and
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: like that's pretty much everything going on in badlands.
- 1:33:00Speaker 8: It's so it's so funny that you go from the
- 1:33:04Speaker 8: machismo of part one to this one where it's like
- 1:33:08Speaker 8: basically teaching the predator to be a kinder more sensitive predator.
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: That's the other thing. Like I, as we get into
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: their culture, like not to cross our universes, but I'm like,
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: these are just like hardcore Klingons. Yeah. Cause they have
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: a very Klingon as much as we've learned so much
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: about the Klingon lifestyle through all the crazy Trek stuff
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: that like, their way of looking at things. And it's
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: all about battle and honor. And like this, if you
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: add the hunt aspect into that, it's just a hundred
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: percent like living the Klingon lifestyle, only a little more hardcore.
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: But because at this point they just off people, you know,
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: like you're the runt of the litter, you need to die.
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: Like everything is like taken to the extreme because you know,
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: it's so like alien machismo.
- 1:33:55Speaker 8: What, what, what this movie is just, If we're just
- 1:34:00Speaker 8: going to... There's all this stuff. Use it. There's like...
- 1:34:04Speaker 8: There's like... This movie kept earning its.
- 1:34:10Speaker 8: Every time I thought it was about to go south,
- 1:34:12Speaker 8: it earned its place to keep my attention. Like the
- 1:34:16Speaker 8: little cute little monkey thing.
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: I have... I hate.
- 1:34:21Speaker 8: Cute little CG monkeys.
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:34:23Speaker 8: And it just like, like lost.
- 1:34:25Speaker 7: In space is a good movie.
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 1:34:29Speaker 8: The double one, two punch of Jumanji and, uh, and
- 1:34:32Speaker 8: lost in space. You just go like, it's just like
- 1:34:36Speaker 8: never worked, you know? And, uh, it's just something I've
- 1:34:40Speaker 8: always hated. And so when the cute little space monkey
- 1:34:43Speaker 8: CG creature shows up, I'm going like, Oh my gosh,
- 1:34:46Speaker 8: this movie is about to take a dump. and uh
- 1:34:49Speaker 8: but it kept it around it kept it it gave
- 1:34:51Speaker 8: him like a reason to be there and you know just.
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: Like by the end yeah yeah yeah yeah.
- 1:34:57Speaker 8: Absolutely the movie just it you don't care and and
- 1:35:01Speaker 8: after you know what feels like eight movies of just
- 1:35:05Speaker 8: you know macho posturing you know uh ellie fenning's uh
- 1:35:10Speaker 8: character is like just so like happy and interesting and
- 1:35:14Speaker 8: curious and scientific and you know, a fun character to
- 1:35:18Speaker 8: be around. And, uh, you know, it gave, gave like
- 1:35:22Speaker 8: a contrast to, you know, the posturing of the predator character.
- 1:35:26Speaker 8: So there was like, you know, yin and yang going on,
- 1:35:30Speaker 8: you know, and then they had their happy little dog
- 1:35:32Speaker 8: with them. So it was just like, it was like, ah, man,
- 1:35:36Speaker 8: this is, this is good. This movie has contrast where
- 1:35:39Speaker 8: like the Rodriguez one has no contrast. It's all, you know, and, uh,
- 1:35:46Speaker 8: And so there's contrasts. But what I liked about this
- 1:35:50Speaker 8: movie most was just the mirroring of the Predator's life
- 1:35:58Speaker 8: and the mirroring of the robot's life where both of
- 1:36:03Speaker 8: them have these tyrannical parental figures and the movie being about, hey,
- 1:36:11Speaker 8: at a certain point you've got to decide what life
- 1:36:16Speaker 8: is best for you, you know?
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: Who do you want to be?
- 1:36:20Speaker 8: Who do you want to be?
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: You've been assigned what you're supposed to be up until
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: this point, your whole life. That's right. And now you're
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: roaming around the Badlands, and you can kind of decide
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: what you want to do and who you want to be.
- 1:36:35Speaker 8: Absolutely, absolutely. So choosing your own identity, choosing your own adventure,
- 1:36:41Speaker 8: and going against the weight... Of the society that you
- 1:36:47Speaker 8: were raised in. I thought that was such a good message.
- 1:36:52Speaker 8: Like the real thing of becoming... The real, you know,
- 1:36:58Speaker 8: trial by fire. The real hunt. The real earning your
- 1:37:01Speaker 8: place in society. Is the point where you say like...
- 1:37:05Speaker 8: I need to do what's best for the way I'm configured.
- 1:37:10Speaker 8: You know? Because I'm not going to be... I'm not
- 1:37:13Speaker 8: configured the way... maybe the society that raised me wants
- 1:37:19Speaker 8: me to be. So I've got to find how I
- 1:37:21Speaker 8: can best contribute to society with what tools I was given,
- 1:37:26Speaker 8: not with what, you know, they want me to be,
- 1:37:29Speaker 8: you know? And so I think that's such an important
- 1:37:33Speaker 8: thing to tell. It's like a good story to tell.
- 1:37:39Speaker 8: That's a good story to tell.
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: Wow. Who would think to make a movie out of
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: a good story? That is the thing.
- 1:37:47Speaker 8: The movie has a reason to be here. That it's
- 1:37:51Speaker 8: going to tell this story that has a little bit
- 1:37:56Speaker 8: of meat to it. And it's not just predator imagery.
- 1:38:01Speaker 8: You know, because this movie could have been so boring
- 1:38:03Speaker 8: had it just been like a Chronicles of Riddick type,
- 1:38:05Speaker 8: you know, or Riddick, you know, walking through a planet.
- 1:38:09Speaker 8: Now he fights a plant. Now he fights a monster.
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: All the depth of Riddick.
- 1:38:12Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah. It could have just been a travel log.
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: All the puddle depth of Riddick.
- 1:38:18Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It could have just been like, you know,
- 1:38:20Speaker 8: a safari kind of like, oh, this happens and this happens.
- 1:38:24Speaker 8: But this really had the feeling of like it was
- 1:38:28Speaker 8: going somewhere.
- 1:38:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: I think even more than that, there is definitely a
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: finding your own way, finding who you are. But I
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: think equally as much like it like. Thea makes the
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: mission statement of the movie at one point, and, like,
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: it really hit, like, me being in the weird mental
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: state that I am in my life, in life as
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: a whole. But I'm like, she specifically, you know, Dex
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: says to her, like, you need to learn to survive
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: on your own. And she says, I can't survive on
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: my own. But who would want to survive on their own?
- 1:39:00Speaker 8: Right, right, right.
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: And, like, she says that out loud, and it just...
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: It hits at that point. You're like, you're watching him
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: do nothing, but try to be Mr. Badass solo action.
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: And like the whole point of this is more of like, no, you,
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: you build a community. Like you find who it is
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: you want to be with. You create your own family.
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: If your family sucks, which yours, your dad certainly did.
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: Your brother seemed cool. That didn't last long. So, you know, you,
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: you are outcast from this family and your clan and
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: everybody that was supposed to be your community, uh, You
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: can go out in the world and find your own family,
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: create your own community. And like, you don't have to
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: be solo, Mr. Badass doing, you know, again, it's so
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: going against the macho machismo bullshit. Like she's like, no,
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: like create your own family. You are leader of your
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: own pack. If you bother to go find your pack.
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: And like, there's so much of that that comes into
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: play later that I'm just like, wow. Once again, like this,
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: has something to say, it has something to build your
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: characters around, which is so unusual for a movie, let
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: alone a movie that's a big crazy action movie that's
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: also a lot of fun. So the fact that it
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: does all of these things at the same time is
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: kind of amazing.
- 1:40:15Speaker 8: What's so funny is this movie is saying that the
- 1:40:22Speaker 8: Predator's greatest adversary is is toxic masculinity. Exactly.
- 1:40:29Speaker 7: Coming from where the first movie brought us. And everything
- 1:40:33Speaker 7: that's come in between.
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: Now it's finally like, ah, God, no wonder you guys
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: are going nowhere with this franchise.
- 1:40:40Speaker 8: Take a chill pill. learn this because it's okay to
- 1:40:44Speaker 8: like have a dog and you know friends and you
- 1:40:48Speaker 8: don't have to be that's what was so good it
- 1:40:50Speaker 8: was such an anecdote from all the chest thumping of
- 1:40:54Speaker 8: the last 20 movies they're saying like look civilization did
- 1:41:02Speaker 8: not you know advance because of the lone wolf or
- 1:41:07Speaker 8: you know When they even talk about wolves, like Alpha,
- 1:41:09Speaker 8: I mean, it was just so, it was so, it's
- 1:41:12Speaker 8: about cooperation and building a society and interconnected, you know,
- 1:41:19Speaker 8: interconnective relationships, interpersonal relationships that connect and make a society strong,
- 1:41:27Speaker 8: you know.
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: It gives you a reason to be what you are
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: and who you are.
- 1:41:31Speaker 7: Otherwise, if you're just off by yourself, who knows.
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: What you are? Who cares what you are? You're just
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: some idiot roaming the wasteland.
- 1:41:38Speaker 8: That's right.
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: If you have other people there to build your life around,
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: then it's worth having a life. Sure, sure.
- 1:41:46Speaker 7: Yeah, so it's deep.
- 1:41:47Speaker 8: It's deep. It gets into some pretty interesting places. And
- 1:41:51Speaker 8: I just liked even the evil character. Who's the evil robot?
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: Not the monster?
- 1:41:58Speaker 8: Yeah, not the monster, the evil robot.
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: I thought that was just, oh, I was going with dad.
- 1:42:02Speaker 8: It was like dad sucks.
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: But no, the other version of her is Tessa.
- 1:42:08Speaker 8: Tessa, right. So Tessa was a really cool, you know,
- 1:42:11Speaker 8: just like going like, oh, I've got the thing of
- 1:42:14Speaker 8: like a robot, you know. I like this whole thing
- 1:42:18Speaker 8: because with AI coming up and everything, you know, it's
- 1:42:21Speaker 8: just like these robots. these stories of artificial intelligent robots,
- 1:42:27Speaker 8: I enjoy them a lot, you know, and with, like,
- 1:42:31Speaker 8: her being given a task by, well, I mean, it
- 1:42:36Speaker 8: just feels like, you know, kind of like your job,
- 1:42:38Speaker 8: you know, it's like you're given a task by this,
- 1:42:41Speaker 8: you know, bottom line driven force, you know, and you're.
- 1:42:48Speaker 5: So, you're.
- 1:42:50Speaker 8: Your purpose is to appease this thing.
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: You know?
- 1:42:54Speaker 8: And so it's just like, it's really interesting. It's like in,
- 1:42:58Speaker 8: because mother is a direct, you know, an AI creature,
- 1:43:02Speaker 8: you know, blow, you know, dictating and being tyrannical over
- 1:43:07Speaker 8: another AI artificial creature. And, and the, but you see
- 1:43:12Speaker 8: Tessa's like stress and, and what she has to become
- 1:43:17Speaker 8: to appease this thing. It's like, what the society makes
- 1:43:22Speaker 8: you become to fit in and to appease its whims,
- 1:43:27Speaker 8: you know? So, kid predator or teenage predator has to
- 1:43:32Speaker 8: mold himself and change himself to appease the authority. And
- 1:43:39Speaker 8: this even, you know, and Tess has to do the
- 1:43:42Speaker 8: same thing, you know? And so they're both kind of
- 1:43:46Speaker 8: the same they're they're two sides of the same coin
- 1:43:48Speaker 8: which is a really interesting way uh you know it's
- 1:43:53Speaker 8: it's got more going on than what a predator movie
- 1:43:59Speaker 8: you would think would.
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: Have certainly before dan got involved well especially because she's
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: she's opposite of him but then you have thea as
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: like this yeah part of the triangle here that's like
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: So different. And, like, so different from even what she
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: realizes is her sister. And, like, she, like, sort of
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: lovingly refers to her as her sister. And, like, that,
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: I think, became the more interesting thing to me after
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: the movie was over. Like, I'm going on with my day,
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: and I'm still thinking about it. I'm like, okay, so
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: we have, you know, your Tessa, who's like... almost going
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: back to old school Hal of like, hey, look, I'm
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: just doing what I need to do to keep this
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: job going. I've got my mission I've been stated. I
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: have to protect myself and my own interests, but I
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: don't care about anybody else. I'm doing the job that
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: was given to me. So it's like it's very like
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: following my orders, even if it means taking out humans,
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: taking out whoever's in my way. I have to follow
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: my mission.
- 1:44:58Speaker 7: And then you get to Thea.
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: Who is 100% different. And so that was, I was like,
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: what is it that makes her, like what piece of
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: humanity is locked in her that's different from all the
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: other synthetic creatures in this universe? It's like, why does
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: she have so much humanity? And so much like curiosity
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: and like, and wanting to connect with other creatures that
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: like we don't get from the other synths. Like Bishop
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: is our best thing in this, you know, cause it
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: is a shared universe now. So it's like, he's kind
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: of the closest we had to like a synth that
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: was never like taking care of his own interests. He
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: was more concerned about serving humans and keeping them safe.
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: And like, so it's interesting because every other example we've
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: seen has been The opposite. You know, you've got your
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: Ian Holm and you've got Alexis David or whoever from
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: The Last Aliens. And like, they're always like going out
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: of their way to screw over humanity because that's what
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: they do. Like that is what's built into their programming
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: and their following mother or some human in charge of
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: the program. And everybody is just like, you know. the
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: least important people are, you know, expendable. So don't worry
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: about them. And like, what is it about Thea that's different?
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: What is it about her programming essentially that makes her
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: so different from every other synth that we've seen? Right, right.
- 1:46:22Speaker 8: Well, you know, I guess they said like, why did
- 1:46:24Speaker 8: they give us emotion so we can connect or understand
- 1:46:27Speaker 8: the creatures of the planet? So maybe she just had
- 1:46:30Speaker 8: a different, you.
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: Know, extra chip.
- 1:46:33Speaker 8: Got an extra chip.
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: Doubled up on emotions.
- 1:46:35Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah. They maybe, like, you know, because all the,
- 1:46:40Speaker 8: you know, soldier ones, you know, the security detail, you know,
- 1:46:44Speaker 8: they're all completely identical and, you know.
- 1:46:46Speaker 10: And lame.
- 1:46:47Speaker 8: And lame, yeah, yeah, yeah. All got the same haircut,
- 1:46:50Speaker 8: you know. And so they all have the same chip,
- 1:46:53Speaker 8: you know. And so maybe different AI, different robots have
- 1:46:57Speaker 8: different purposes, so therefore they have different, you know, configurations,
- 1:47:01Speaker 8: you know.
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: Or if it's actually, like, real AI, like, it's supposed
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: to be learning as it goes. So maybe... But again,
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: it's like she started off the same as Tessa. So
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: Tessa just went down this cut-and-dry version of what she's
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: supposed to be doing for the company. Yeah. And then, like, Ella,
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: you know, takes Thea off in this other direction. And, like, she,
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: I guess, has... like adventures on her own. Like it's weird.
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: We don't know how much time she's been around or
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: how much she's been separate from Tessa enough to create this. Like,
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: was it just this one adventure or had they been
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: on other things? Like she'd been on the planet long
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: enough to know other predators have been there and learn
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: the language. And she, she knew a lot about the planet.
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: So she'd at least been around that planet a while,
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: but we don't really know what the story was before that.
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: So it is weird. interesting that, like, she, somewhere along
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: the way, started, like, developing as an AI creature, and, like, started, like,
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: expanding what it was, not only that she knew, but
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: the fact that they had emotions, she started expanding that
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: as well, which Tessa obviously didn't do, but, like, she's
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: attaching herself to these biological creatures, because she knows so
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: much about biology, but then you add in the emotion
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: part of it, and, like, she starts to care about
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: these creatures which again is it normally how it goes
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: with synths.
- 1:48:25Speaker 8: So that's sort of like maybe also just works into
- 1:48:29Speaker 8: the theme of the movie of like you know Tessa
- 1:48:34Speaker 8: got the good one got separated out from the control
- 1:48:41Speaker 8: thea got separated out from the the control of the
- 1:48:44Speaker 8: authority you know and then had the space to start
- 1:48:49Speaker 8: making her own connections you know.
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: Making her own decision of who do i want to
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: be like back to our theme of yeah who do
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: i want to be do i want to be what
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: the corporation tells me to be and to follow orders
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: or do i want to branch out and meet new
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: characters and be part of this community and like do
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: other things and like again that sort of goes against
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: the robotic thing that is presented as what they should
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: be but like screw that like that's the whole point
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: of this movie is like yeah I don't have to
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: do that I don't have to be that I can
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: do whatever I choose to that's my point like so
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: the fact that they're all kind of going through a
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: version of this is pretty cool.
- 1:49:30Speaker 8: Yeah yeah but you don't have that voice telling you
- 1:49:32Speaker 8: that telling you what you are all the time and
- 1:49:36Speaker 8: you you she was like been able to be stuck
- 1:49:38Speaker 8: in a vulture's nest for two weeks you know she
- 1:49:41Speaker 8: was you know it probably started a long time before
- 1:49:43Speaker 8: that but you know two weeks to think and start
- 1:49:46Speaker 8: making your own connections and not having that you know
- 1:49:48Speaker 8: uh voice in the back of your head telling you
- 1:49:50Speaker 8: what you are you know you're able to evolve you
- 1:49:55Speaker 8: know and that's what happens with the you know it
- 1:49:59Speaker 8: was so nice having character arcs in a Predator movie. So,
- 1:50:02Speaker 8: you know, everybody learns a little something about themselves. And so,
- 1:50:06Speaker 8: you know, I know that's like lame to have that.
- 1:50:09Speaker 8: You want that in a movie. I'm thinking of the
- 1:50:11Speaker 8: movie Adapt. adaptation you know you know we're like and
- 1:50:15Speaker 8: I don't want to make a movie where they go
- 1:50:17Speaker 8: through stuff and they learn stuff about themselves but.
- 1:50:20Speaker 13: It was nice to have because I think people feel
- 1:50:24Speaker 13: that way I mean I think that people feel like
- 1:50:26Speaker 13: oh I went through this stuff and now I feel
- 1:50:29Speaker 13: this way about things so I've changed as a human
- 1:50:32Speaker 13: you know and.
- 1:50:35Speaker 8: So it feels true when you see a movie that
- 1:50:38Speaker 8: has that you know well.
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: And watching our predator go through that because he's so
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: cut and dry and so set in his ways at
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: the beginning and she keeps saying this stuff to him
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: and usually he sort of shrugs it off for the
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: first half and then like midway in you get that
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: change of like him watching these changes take place in
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: front of him he's like oh i actually care about
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: this not it's like he's realizing in in real time
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: he's like whoa wait I'm supposed to be doing this,
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: but I actually care about this over here. And like,
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: I'm going to make this decision and decide to do,
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: you know, decide to go my own way and, and
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: still get to where I need to go. By the
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: time we get to the end, like he is the
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: hunter he needs to be. He is the leader that
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: he needs to be and proves it to his dad
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: and like proves that like my way still got me
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: where I needed to be and And I'm better because
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: of it, which again, shouldn't be in a movie like this, really. Yeah,
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: I know.
- 1:51:38Speaker 8: It's so much, you're getting, you thought you were going
- 1:51:42Speaker 8: in and getting, I might get a nice, I might
- 1:51:47Speaker 8: get a familiar passable cheeseburger, you know? And then you
- 1:51:53Speaker 8: end up getting something, you know, it's maybe still a cheeseburger,
- 1:51:56Speaker 8: but it's a damn good cheeseburger. And I go like,
- 1:51:58Speaker 8: oh man, I want to come back. And have this
- 1:52:01Speaker 8: guy make me another cheeseburger because that was so much
- 1:52:03Speaker 8: better than I thought it was going to be.
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: Like it never backs off of the entertainment as well
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: like you get big giant like there's when he gets
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: to the planet there's an extended period there where I'm
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: like this is just crazy action like one thing to
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: the next to the next and he's fighting the tree
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: and he's fighting this creature and he's like and then
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: it gets into like goriness and like you're watching him
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: just slice into the giant monster and behead this creature
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: and I'm like it is still delivering.
- 1:52:33Speaker 8: Absolutely.
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: The 12-year-old is still going, kick ass, did you see that?
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: He just chopped that creature's head off. It still works
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: on that level, but then it backs it up with
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: an actual story and character development. It's crazy.
- 1:52:47Speaker 8: It's crazy.
- 1:52:48Speaker 1: It's crazy.
- 1:52:48Speaker 8: And that just makes the action... feel like something like, yeah,
- 1:52:52Speaker 8: you're on the journey with this thing.
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:52:54Speaker 8: It felt like, uh, King Kong, you know, it felt like,
- 1:52:57Speaker 8: Oh man, he landed on King Kong planet with like,
- 1:52:59Speaker 8: you know, just like everything there's out to kill you,
- 1:53:02Speaker 8: you know? And, um, and yeah, I really like the
- 1:53:06Speaker 8: weird biology of the planet and razor glass and having
- 1:53:10Speaker 8: razor grass and, and just the weird, all the weird,
- 1:53:14Speaker 8: I love it when the designers can come up with
- 1:53:16Speaker 8: like new monsters and new plants and new this, and
- 1:53:19Speaker 8: they had the budget to like actually actualize it and
- 1:53:23Speaker 8: make it look like a, uh, another planet and not like,
- 1:53:27Speaker 8: you know, Rodriguez's backyard. It was like, it looked like,
- 1:53:32Speaker 8: it looked like something. Uh, yeah. Well, one thing I,
- 1:53:36Speaker 8: my thought was going through the, was like, like, uh,
- 1:53:41Speaker 8: I was watching this going like, this is so damn
- 1:53:44Speaker 8: entertaining that this might be... And I had this glimmer
- 1:53:50Speaker 8: of hope where maybe, because now movies have to compete
- 1:53:57Speaker 8: with people staying home and watching everything that has ever
- 1:54:01Speaker 8: been made on the streaming services, or... video games or
- 1:54:06Speaker 8: social media or this or that there's like there's or
- 1:54:10Speaker 8: like there's like so many reasons why not to go
- 1:54:13Speaker 8: to a movie you know filmmakers need to realize that
- 1:54:17Speaker 8: they gotta up their game if they want people to
- 1:54:20Speaker 8: come out all right and they're gonna have to like
- 1:54:24Speaker 8: up their game and something like this where it makes
- 1:54:26Speaker 8: it worth going to see it in the theater you
- 1:54:29Speaker 8: know and uh so it kind of gave me hope
- 1:54:32Speaker 8: because going like okay you've got 90 minutes to tell
- 1:54:36Speaker 8: a kick-ass story with a beginning, middle, and end. And
- 1:54:39Speaker 8: you've got to give them production value. And you've got
- 1:54:42Speaker 8: to give them a full experience. And you've got to
- 1:54:44Speaker 8: give them the sound. And you've got to give them everything.
- 1:54:47Speaker 8: You can't just show like Predator versus Alien and have
- 1:54:52Speaker 8: them fight a few times. And that's just not going
- 1:54:54Speaker 8: to cut it anymore. Because people aren't going to go
- 1:54:56Speaker 8: out just to see that. You've actually got to give
- 1:55:00Speaker 8: them the story first. and the acting, and the likable characters,
- 1:55:03Speaker 8: and the drama, and the conflict, and the spectacle, and
- 1:55:06Speaker 8: the sound, and the this, and the that. You've got
- 1:55:08Speaker 8: to give it all. And it's got to be self-contained
- 1:55:11Speaker 8: enough where you don't feel like the Marvel thing, where
- 1:55:13Speaker 8: if you didn't watch the 20 other movies, you're not
- 1:55:15Speaker 8: going to know what's going on.
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: Even the three that he's done, they're self-contained enough that
- 1:55:23Speaker 1: you can enter into Prey, or you could come into
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: this one having not seen anything else. And even the
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: last I actually thought when we get to that, because
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: there's a portion within the the animated one where there's
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: a ship. And like by the end, I thought the
- 1:55:37Speaker 1: ship was I was like, oh, is he crossing over? Like,
- 1:55:40Speaker 1: are we going to get live action characters and people
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: from the animated like that? But I don't think that's
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: where he's going. But he also has the freedom to do. Like,
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: he's telling a story in this giant universe, and he's
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: got several different stories kind of going at once here.
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: So if he wants to bring in... But again, he's so...
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: He's so conscious of what's going on, I think even
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: he knows, like, you don't want to embed it so
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: much that you can't just come into this movie and
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: enjoy it on its own.
- 1:56:07Speaker 8: That's the point.
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: But he knows he's dealing with a bigger thing, because
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: that's also why he worked in, like, the touches of
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: Alien without being Alien vs. Predator. I think he even
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: said it was, you know, it was cooler that we
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: just take, you know, Weyland-Yutani and, like, we make them
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: the real big bad behind everything.
- 1:56:25Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: And we take the synths, but we're not taking, like,
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: we didn't work Lance Hendrickson in again. Because how many
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: times have we seen him come back into a movie
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: in that Alien franchise? Even though he should be long dead,
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: he keeps popping up in movies over and over again.
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: So it's like we didn't work that in. We gave
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: us a whole new version of the synth to deal with.
- 1:56:46Speaker 1: And then even so much so is, like, again, the
- 1:56:48Speaker 1: inside joke just for geeks, the fact that we get the, like,
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: power loader fight at the end, only it's the massively
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: bigger giant robotic version of this now versus another big
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: monster fight. Like, it's just, we get a little touch
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: of the, you know, the alien crossover world, but without...
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: But even then, he's like, I don't want it just
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: being jamming your toys together. It doesn't need to be
- 1:57:11Speaker 1: Alien vs. Predator. Here we go. Which is what we
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: tried to do with two movies years ago. And he's like,
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: I didn't want that. He's like, I want touches of it.
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: I want it to be a larger universe. But you
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: don't have to hit people over the head with it.
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: It can just be adding this stuff in to kind
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: of enrich the whole thing.
- 1:57:30Speaker 7: But it's still self-contained enough to be its own movie.
- 1:57:33Speaker 8: No, it felt real organic. And it was nice if
- 1:57:36Speaker 8: you've seen Aliens to kind of get the reference, you know,
- 1:57:39Speaker 8: but it was like, I think if you came in
- 1:57:42Speaker 8: as a 13-year-old and saw that, it wouldn't feel like, what?
- 1:57:46Speaker 8: Where's that coming from? It would feel very organic to
- 1:57:50Speaker 8: the story. And I got to tell you, this is
- 1:57:52Speaker 8: probably the first movie in a long time where I
- 1:57:54Speaker 8: felt the geeking out enjoyment of it. You know, where,
- 1:57:59Speaker 8: not just, that was in the Aliens power loader, I
- 1:58:03Speaker 8: was just, like, so invested in the movie by the time,
- 1:58:07Speaker 8: you know, Giant Robot versus giant monster and a alien
- 1:58:13Speaker 8: planet for some reason i got real you know 13
- 1:58:18Speaker 8: you know kid giddiness about what was going on on
- 1:58:22Speaker 8: screen where i was i was taken away. And I
- 1:58:27Speaker 8: was like, that is just some big, awesome science fiction, uh,
- 1:58:32Speaker 8: spectacle that I really enjoyed.
- 1:58:34Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:58:35Speaker 1: Without it like devolving to the silliness of the predator,
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: which don't get me wrong.
- 1:58:42Speaker 8: It's fun.
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: But like that, when you feel like the 12 year old,
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: like you don't feel like there's anything else going on
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: where this gives you the excitement of that 12 year old, uh,
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: But you're also like, you brought your brain with you too.
- 1:58:54Speaker 1: And you're like, Oh, but we're telling a bigger story
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: and we've got sort of a grand take on things.
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: And like, we're looking at like people making decisions about
- 1:59:02Speaker 1: their life that like, you're not going to get in
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: a silly action movie for 12 year olds. So this like.
- 1:59:08Speaker 7: Somehow melds them both into one thing.
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: And like, it works both ways. It's, it's impressive that
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: this works the way it does.
- 1:59:16Speaker 8: Absolutely.
- 1:59:17Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 1:59:18Speaker 8: This movie could have been so boring. Yeah.
- 1:59:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: I mean, just, again, from the writing and directing standpoint. Yeah. And, again,
- 1:59:26Speaker 1: I think what takes it up several notches is the acting. Like,
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: Elle Fanning, like, sold so much of this movie.
- 1:59:33Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: And, like, it'd be different. Like, Thea's just so likable
- 1:59:37Speaker 1: that you love that. But the fact that she's also
- 1:59:40Speaker 1: the villain. Like, she also is Tessa and gets to
- 1:59:43Speaker 1: turn up and be, you know, be... the evil badass,
- 1:59:47Speaker 1: you know, that's ready to kill everyone. So it's like
- 1:59:50Speaker 1: the fact that she does both of those, it's impressive.
- 1:59:53Speaker 1: And then not to undercut Demetrius is the guy playing deck.
- 1:59:57Speaker 1: And like, he's as much as, you know, he's buried
- 2:00:01Speaker 1: behind either physical makeup or CG coverage. I don't know
- 2:00:06Speaker 1: how much they are with each of them, but yeah, exactly.
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: I don't care because so much of this character comes
- 2:00:12Speaker 1: through in a guy that looks like a predator and,
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: doesn't speak English, and yet we still are so attached
- 2:00:19Speaker 1: to this guy. And we see him going through this
- 2:00:21Speaker 1: journey and kind of growing as a creature, as a person,
- 2:00:25Speaker 1: but he's not a human.
- 2:00:26Speaker 7: So, like, you see him as a character.
- 2:00:28Speaker 1: Become better and more enriched as a character to watch. And, like,
- 2:00:34Speaker 1: you don't normally get that from somebody, you know, encased
- 2:00:37Speaker 1: in makeup or covered in CG green screen action. Absolutely not.
- 2:00:41Speaker 1: So the fact that we still are really kind of
- 2:00:44Speaker 1: invested in him as much as, as Elle Fanning's performances,
- 2:00:49Speaker 1: that like it's, it says a lot about him as
- 2:00:51Speaker 1: an actor as well. So both of those two lead performances,
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: I think take this up several notches. Absolutely.
- 2:00:58Speaker 8: It's, it's all, unfortunately, unfortunately for movies, it comes down
- 2:01:04Speaker 8: to story and character. And it's like the oldest thing
- 2:01:09Speaker 8: to say. It's like the actors that you have, the
- 2:01:13Speaker 8: characters they're portraying, and the story that they're going through
- 2:01:19Speaker 8: is like what the freaking movies are about. And so often,
- 2:01:23Speaker 8: you know, it's just about, you know, pre-frozen elements that
- 2:01:29Speaker 8: they think they can show and that's the movie but
- 2:01:33Speaker 8: they they they forget the most important part you know
- 2:01:36Speaker 8: they can do like great predator armor and great props
- 2:01:40Speaker 8: and great this and great that but if the story
- 2:01:43Speaker 8: isn't compelling all that is just so empty and it's
- 2:01:47Speaker 8: just kind of like staring into a lamp after a
- 2:01:50Speaker 8: minute you know yeah.
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: I mean, that's the thing.
- 2:01:53Speaker 2: I've watched a lot of sci-fi stuff and crazy action movies,
- 2:01:59Speaker 2: and there's so many now that I'm just like, eh,
- 2:02:02Speaker 2: it was fine.
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: I'll watch it, and even if the action part of
- 2:02:06Speaker 1: it works, it's still hollow, and there's not much to it.
- 2:02:10Speaker 1: Where this one, I felt so happy by the time
- 2:02:14Speaker 1: we got to the end. I was so enriched by
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: these three characters by the end there. Right. And I
- 2:02:21Speaker 1: kind of like, not to, it is interesting that the
- 2:02:24Speaker 1: cute character worked. Like, the cute thing at the beginning,
- 2:02:27Speaker 1: because you don't get that in Predator movies. We don't
- 2:02:29Speaker 1: have a, again, that's a very modern era Star Wars,
- 2:02:32Speaker 1: definitely Mandalorian, of like, here's my cute sidekick, and like,
- 2:02:36Speaker 1: every time you cut to him, you're like, aw, look
- 2:02:38Speaker 1: how cute he is.
- 2:02:40Speaker 7: And like, it seems like that wouldn't work in a
- 2:02:42Speaker 7: Predator movie.
- 2:02:42Speaker 1: But we introduced Bud, and like, he's still so damn likable. Right.
- 2:02:48Speaker 1: And is like, so like, attached to our main character
- 2:02:52Speaker 1: that starts mimicking him and you're like all right you
- 2:02:54Speaker 1: have to like this guy look at him and like
- 2:02:56Speaker 1: yeah her actually so you you know you you like
- 2:03:00Speaker 1: the character and then as it goes on and you
- 2:03:02Speaker 1: see what she becomes like that is important as well
- 2:03:07Speaker 1: But even my other favorite thing is once he, like,
- 2:03:10Speaker 1: loses most of his high-powered fancy weaponry, and by the
- 2:03:15Speaker 1: end battle has to resort to, like, the natural elements.
- 2:03:19Speaker 1: So he starts using, like, the killer tree to, like,
- 2:03:22Speaker 1: attack them. And then the thing that whatever the creature
- 2:03:25Speaker 1: is that he wears on his shoulder that starts spitting
- 2:03:28Speaker 1: acid at everybody... is also adorable. And, like, somehow, this
- 2:03:33Speaker 1: little slug-looking thing that spits acid is adorable, and you're
- 2:03:38Speaker 1: really upset when it's not part of the team anymore.
- 2:03:41Speaker 6: Right.
- 2:03:41Speaker 8: Yeah, when it's, like, all burnt, like a piece of chicken,
- 2:03:44Speaker 8: and you go like, aw.
- 2:03:45Speaker 1: It's so sad.
- 2:03:46Speaker 7: I was like, because it sacrifices itself to.
- 2:03:48Speaker 1: Save our lead. And, like, That's amazing. Like, in a
- 2:03:53Speaker 1: few minutes of him being introduced in, and, again, it's.
- 2:03:56Speaker 7: A slug that spits acid.
- 2:03:58Speaker 1: Yeah. But somehow I was like, oh, man. Like, it
- 2:04:02Speaker 1: was the fact that it sacrificed itself to save our character.
- 2:04:05Speaker 8: Right.
- 2:04:06Speaker 1: It was important. Yeah. It, like, shouldn't have been in
- 2:04:08Speaker 1: this type of movie. Absolutely. Yet it was. Yeah.
- 2:04:11Speaker 8: I mean, like, the, yeah, it's like Beastmaster, right?
- 2:04:16Speaker 1: Ah, Poto. Yeah.
- 2:04:19Speaker 8: No, it's great. I love the fact that he gets
- 2:04:24Speaker 8: biological equivalents of the old Predator stuff.
- 2:04:29Speaker 1: That's so cool. And again, so different.
- 2:04:32Speaker 7: All we've had is them so reliant on technology.
- 2:04:35Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 2:04:36Speaker 8: I'm just recycling the same thing over and over again.
- 2:04:39Speaker 1: Which is an interesting little tidbit, because I've heard people
- 2:04:42Speaker 1: mention that before, that it... This whole story, this whole
- 2:04:46Speaker 1: adventure shouldn't work because he wants to be Mr. Solo dude.
- 2:04:50Speaker 1: But Thea is smart enough that she knows their ways
- 2:04:54Speaker 1: and is like, oh, I'm a tool. So it's okay.
- 2:04:57Speaker 1: You love your gadgets. You love your tools. So you
- 2:05:01Speaker 1: can use me. Even though she's kind of using him.
- 2:05:05Speaker 1: But she knows how to kind of work his tools.
- 2:05:08Speaker 1: his old timey ways and his like traditions and the
- 2:05:11Speaker 1: way that they think as their species and like their society.
- 2:05:15Speaker 1: So that was a cool little touch that like, this
- 2:05:18Speaker 1: shouldn't have worked. He should have just thrown her aside
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: and be like, Nope, I'm on my own. That's how
- 2:05:22Speaker 1: real warrior does things. And like, but she like played
- 2:05:26Speaker 1: him enough to be like, no, I'm just a tool.
- 2:05:29Speaker 1: It's okay. I'm a piece of machinery for you.
- 2:05:32Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:05:32Speaker 1: Right. So the fact that then later he'd like strips
- 2:05:34Speaker 1: all the machinery and like is fighting with sticks and,
- 2:05:38Speaker 1: creatures he just is back to like the natural.
- 2:05:41Speaker 14: World yeah yeah i think the movie is like kind
- 2:05:44Speaker 14: of it goes into the theme of cooperation you know
- 2:05:47Speaker 14: of like uh of like using you know of developing
- 2:05:52Speaker 14: a community and working together with a.
- 2:05:53Speaker 8: Community to to fight you know to to achieve a
- 2:05:58Speaker 8: better goal you know to do something noble you know
- 2:06:02Speaker 8: um yeah uh uh It was cool.
- 2:06:08Speaker 1: It's awesome. And the more I've thought about it, at
- 2:06:12Speaker 1: the time I left and I was like, that was
- 2:06:14Speaker 1: cool and I really liked these characters and I was
- 2:06:16Speaker 1: just kind of happy to see it come together in
- 2:06:19Speaker 1: sort of a non-traditionally happy ending that I didn't expect.
- 2:06:24Speaker 1: But again, when the trio comes back together, trio pun intended,
- 2:06:29Speaker 1: I suppose. Uh-huh.
- 2:06:30Speaker 7: Comes back together at the end there.
- 2:06:31Speaker 1: And, like, we take out our original bad guy. And, like,
- 2:06:34Speaker 1: we see him, like, just hanging out together. And, like,
- 2:06:37Speaker 1: they're this new badass team. And I'm like, I love that. And, like,
- 2:06:41Speaker 1: now I just want to follow these three around on
- 2:06:44Speaker 1: adventures for every other movie that is made ever again.
- 2:06:48Speaker 1: I just want to hang out with these three and
- 2:06:50Speaker 1: see what they get into next. And luckily we kind
- 2:06:53Speaker 1: of get to do that, I'm assuming. Because we definitely
- 2:06:56Speaker 1: left it.
- 2:06:57Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:06:58Speaker 1: And answered a question as I was going through before
- 2:07:01Speaker 1: I got to this movie, and I'm re-watching the other
- 2:07:03Speaker 1: Predator movies, and I'm like... question I asked myself the
- 2:07:07Speaker 1: day before was, we've never seen a female predator, have we?
- 2:07:12Speaker 1: We've seen so many predators and so many variations of
- 2:07:16Speaker 1: monsters created for or by or that hang out with them.
- 2:07:20Speaker 1: We've seen all these other creatures, but as far as
- 2:07:23Speaker 1: we know, every predator we've seen has been male and
- 2:07:26Speaker 1: very masculine so i'm like what the hell is the
- 2:07:31Speaker 1: mom like so we get a fact that yes there
- 2:07:34Speaker 1: is a female predator out there and now we're going
- 2:07:38Speaker 1: to be introduced to one so it would seem so
- 2:07:40Speaker 1: the fact that we've got that tease at the end
- 2:07:42Speaker 1: there is like oh i just asked that question what
- 2:07:45Speaker 1: the hell are the female predators like if these are
- 2:07:47Speaker 1: the guys like what what's the other end of this
- 2:07:50Speaker 1: deal right so i guess we're assuming this is done
- 2:07:53Speaker 1: relatively well financially I'm guessing we're going to get that
- 2:07:58Speaker 1: uh question answered in the next movie.
- 2:08:00Speaker 4: There's gonna be bigger and gnarlier and you know like
- 2:08:03Speaker 4: praying manas you know like how often in the animal
- 2:08:06Speaker 4: kingdom the female is like much bigger and you know
- 2:08:09Speaker 4: uh aggressive in a way.
- 2:08:11Speaker 1: You know that's what i was gonna say like are
- 2:08:13Speaker 1: they the more hardcore.
- 2:08:15Speaker 8: Ones yeah right like Like, these are, the guys are
- 2:08:17Speaker 8: just trying to keep up with, to be worthy mates.
- 2:08:20Speaker 1: Guys are like, I gotta go do this or my
- 2:08:22Speaker 1: wife's gonna beat my ass. It's just domestic abuse through
- 2:08:27Speaker 1: all the predator households.
- 2:08:29Speaker 8: That's it.
- 2:08:30Speaker 7: And that's why the men are all such assholes.
- 2:08:32Speaker 1: It's because they've just been beaten down by the females
- 2:08:35Speaker 1: of the species, which makes things even worse, actually. Yeah. Yeah,
- 2:08:40Speaker 1: you want to blame it on machismo, but now the
- 2:08:42Speaker 1: women are just going to show up and be even scarier.
- 2:08:45Speaker 7: These predators, they got issues, man. Our guy is the
- 2:08:48Speaker 7: only good one so far.
- 2:08:49Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:08:50Speaker 8: Well, I think, yeah, I'm really looking forward to seeing
- 2:08:54Speaker 8: Dax or whatever, like, riding around on the back of
- 2:08:58Speaker 8: the monkey and, you know, like Battle Cat and, you know,
- 2:09:02Speaker 8: throwing a spear or something, you know, and I'm down
- 2:09:04Speaker 8: with that.
- 2:09:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, he got into this and he said
- 2:09:07Speaker 1: he had, when Prey got really well received, he had
- 2:09:11Speaker 1: like three more ideas. And one was Killer of Killers.
- 2:09:15Speaker 1: One was the movie we just watched. And there was
- 2:09:19Speaker 1: a third one that he's now working on. So he's
- 2:09:23Speaker 1: supposed to be bringing us the next Predator movie. I'm
- 2:09:26Speaker 1: assuming that's just a direct follow-up to this. I am
- 2:09:28Speaker 1: interested because, again, Killer of Killers leaves the door very
- 2:09:32Speaker 1: open at the end, too. So I'm like, is that
- 2:09:35Speaker 1: story also going to come into play? Or is they
- 2:09:37Speaker 1: just going to, somewhere down the line, do another animated
- 2:09:40Speaker 1: movie that's separate? But yeah, he seems like he's got...
- 2:09:44Speaker 1: a lot more plates spinning in the predator world. And
- 2:09:46Speaker 1: I'm like, thank God because I don't want it to
- 2:09:49Speaker 1: go to anyone else. He's so good at this. Yeah.
- 2:09:52Speaker 1: Just yeah.
- 2:09:53Speaker 7: Keep, keep letting him make good stuff.
- 2:09:55Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:09:56Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:09:56Speaker 8: He had an idea. He had an idea other than,
- 2:09:59Speaker 8: Predator stabs a guy in the face.
- 2:10:03Speaker 1: Now, I'm also, again, he made a great movie to
- 2:10:07Speaker 1: begin with. We've seen him do a little more work
- 2:10:09Speaker 1: on TV over the years, but now he's just been
- 2:10:12Speaker 1: immersed in the Predator world for so long. I kind
- 2:10:16Speaker 1: of want to see what else he does outside of that. Sure.
- 2:10:18Speaker 7: There's only one other thing that's supposedly.
- 2:10:21Speaker 1: In the works. Have you heard what else he's working on?
- 2:10:23Speaker 3: Mm-mm.
- 2:10:24Speaker 1: Nope. So, he's also, in addition to this next Predator movie,
- 2:10:29Speaker 1: working on a TV series adaptation of Waterworld.
- 2:10:35Speaker 3: Oh.
- 2:10:38Speaker 7: Dan, I have so much faith in you.
- 2:10:40Speaker 1: Can he save the Waterworld concept? Can someone make something
- 2:10:47Speaker 1: useful out of Waterworld?
- 2:10:50Speaker 8: Well, I mean, look, dude. I'm kind of mad at
- 2:10:58Speaker 8: him for getting distracted by Waterworld.
- 2:11:05Speaker 1: You can't complete thoughts because Waterworld took over your brain.
- 2:11:08Speaker 8: Yeah, I can't... No, I'm sorry. I'm mad at him
- 2:11:14Speaker 8: for getting... distracted by water world well.
- 2:11:18Speaker 1: But at the same time i mean i might have
- 2:11:20Speaker 1: questioned him taking on predator as a concept as well
- 2:11:24Speaker 1: and yet somehow he's knocked out three solid stories so
- 2:11:28Speaker 1: i'm like i mean there's a there's an essence of
- 2:11:33Speaker 1: something interesting in water world at the If someone can
- 2:11:41Speaker 1: do something interesting and maybe impressive with the concept, Dan
- 2:11:46Speaker 1: Trachtenberg may be the man.
- 2:11:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:11:49Speaker 8: I mean, look, I love Mad Max stuff, all right?
- 2:11:53Speaker 8: So Mad Max on jet skis was a good one-time watch, okay?
- 2:12:02Speaker 8: But yeah, I mean, yeah. Well, here's the thing. If
- 2:12:07Speaker 8: he's got a... angle on it if he's got a
- 2:12:10Speaker 8: story he can tell in the water world world you
- 2:12:12Speaker 8: know water world world and uh and it's not just
- 2:12:17Speaker 8: you know uh whatever the hell that was uh you know.
- 2:12:22Speaker 7: Just as the water world stunt show.
- 2:12:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:12:25Speaker 8: That's it.
- 2:12:25Speaker 1: Cause I was like, I've heard amazing reviews. Like people
- 2:12:30Speaker 1: have been like, yeah, water world's crap. But if you
- 2:12:32Speaker 1: ever went to.
- 2:12:32Speaker 7: The theme park and saw the stunt show, it's amazing.
- 2:12:35Speaker 1: So like, maybe you just saw that as a kid
- 2:12:37Speaker 1: and went, okay, I can do something with this.
- 2:12:40Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:12:40Speaker 1: I can take this stunt show. He's like, never seen
- 2:12:43Speaker 1: the movie. He just saw the stunt show. I can
- 2:12:45Speaker 1: do something with it.
- 2:12:46Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:12:47Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 2:12:48Speaker 8: All right.
- 2:12:48Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:12:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:12:49Speaker 8: I mean, look, he's, He's definitely the best hope Waterworld
- 2:12:57Speaker 8: has ever had.
- 2:12:58Speaker 1: Most definitely. The only other thing that was amazing that
- 2:13:03Speaker 1: was ever connected to Waterworld was Dennis Hopper. Man, I
- 2:13:09Speaker 1: could not have been more bored by Kevin Costner in
- 2:13:11Speaker 1: a movie.
- 2:13:12Speaker 7: And he's been boring in several movies over the years.
- 2:13:15Speaker 1: But no offense, he can turn in a good performance,
- 2:13:18Speaker 1: but he can also be the most boring man on
- 2:13:20Speaker 1: the planet.
- 2:13:21Speaker 7: What a World is a good example.
- 2:13:22Speaker 1: But to counterbalance that with crazy, over-the-top, scenery-chewing, one-eyed, bald-headed
- 2:13:30Speaker 1: Dennis Hopper was amazing.
- 2:13:34Speaker 8: It's not the worst movie ever made. Because of Dennis Hopper.
- 2:13:38Speaker 8: Because of Dennis Hopper. I agree.
- 2:13:40Speaker 7: He's so good in that.
- 2:13:42Speaker 1: Again, as ridiculous, as over-the-top as you can be. And
- 2:13:47Speaker 1: he's just awesome and hilarious and crazy and... Yeah, it
- 2:13:51Speaker 1: was the reason I saw that. Again, I had to
- 2:13:54Speaker 1: play it in the background, but I would put it
- 2:13:56Speaker 1: in to hear Dennis Hopper say his crazy shit. Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 2:13:59Speaker 7: His big speech.
- 2:13:59Speaker 8: And I would just hear it.
- 2:14:01Speaker 1: All the time, and I'd be like, ah, that guy.
- 2:14:03Speaker 1: I love that guy. Crazy bastard that he was.
- 2:14:06Speaker 8: Right, right.
- 2:14:06Speaker 1: He's so good in that movie. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:14:09Speaker 8: But the bad guys in Mad Max movies are always
- 2:14:12Speaker 8: very entertaining, you know, and that's, that's basically what this was.
- 2:14:15Speaker 1: So there's not enough 11 to dial it up to.
- 2:14:19Speaker 1: You're the bad guy in the post-apocalyptic movie.
- 2:14:22Speaker 8: Absolutely.
- 2:14:23Speaker 1: You can do whatever you want.
- 2:14:25Speaker 8: That's it. That's it. The sky's the limit, you know? Uh, yeah, yeah.
- 2:14:30Speaker 1: Great.
- 2:14:30Speaker 8: Well, no, I'm, I'm, I'm down with it. You know, we'll,
- 2:14:33Speaker 8: we'll see, you know, it's, uh, He's definitely good at
- 2:14:39Speaker 8: breathing some life into some franchises that definitely need it.
- 2:14:43Speaker 8: Maybe that's what he needs. Maybe he needs that structure
- 2:14:46Speaker 8: to fight against. Sometimes when these guys go off on
- 2:14:50Speaker 8: their own and do their passion project, then you go like, oh, no.
- 2:14:57Speaker 1: But the fact that I'm assuming Predator was his passion project,
- 2:15:01Speaker 1: you know, he could have done whatever coming off of, like,
- 2:15:04Speaker 1: Cloverfield World was tons of money, so I'm assuming he
- 2:15:07Speaker 1: at least had a mid-budget movie he could have made
- 2:15:10Speaker 1: after that, and, like, he took on Prey when he
- 2:15:14Speaker 1: could have done whatever, so... Again, it feels like he's
- 2:15:18Speaker 1: got a good sense of what he wants to accomplish,
- 2:15:20Speaker 1: even if it's weird and unconventional. Waterworld is weird and unconventional,
- 2:15:26Speaker 1: so if anybody can pull it off, Dan is the man.
- 2:15:29Speaker 8: Yeah, absolutely. I don't envy him, though. The production horrors.
- 2:15:36Speaker 3: Of the Oh, yeah.
- 2:15:38Speaker 8: The original was.
- 2:15:39Speaker 1: Don't shoot on water is like the basic, you know,
- 2:15:42Speaker 1: stay away from kids, animals, and shooting on water. Those
- 2:15:46Speaker 1: are the rules of making anything.
- 2:15:50Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:15:50Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. That's not the best plan, but, you know,
- 2:15:54Speaker 1: he seems to like a challenge, so.
- 2:15:56Speaker 8: Yeah, dude. Yeah. Totally, dude. Totally.
- 2:16:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:16:00Speaker 8: Yeah. So, in summary, in summary, there's Predator....
- 2:16:09Speaker 1: And then there's Dan Trachtenberg.
- 2:16:11Speaker 8: Dan Trachtenberg, after several floundering additions. You know, we finally,
- 2:16:20Speaker 8: after what, how long ago was Predator? Almost, what, almost
- 2:16:24Speaker 8: 30 years ago?
- 2:16:25Speaker 1: 87.
- 2:16:25Speaker 8: Yeah, geez. Oh my gosh, almost 40 years ago?
- 2:16:31Speaker 1: It's been a long run. It took a while to
- 2:16:34Speaker 1: get back to being impressive again. Right.
- 2:16:36Speaker 8: Space Hunter... It took a while to get the Space
- 2:16:39Speaker 8: Hunter formula right. Figure out what these movies were.
- 2:16:43Speaker 1: Just a few misfires along the way.
- 2:16:45Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. Yeah, so, yeah. I was so
- 2:16:52Speaker 8: glad I saw it in the theater.
- 2:16:55Speaker 1: It made it better, just being immersed in all that,
- 2:16:59Speaker 1: because it's a crazy landscape. It is the Badlands. So
- 2:17:02Speaker 1: to be in the theater and have that sort of
- 2:17:05Speaker 1: up and around you and immersed in the sound and
- 2:17:08Speaker 1: all of it, it's definitely worth seeing in the theater.
- 2:17:11Speaker 8: Yeah, definitely.
- 2:17:13Speaker 1: Cool. Cool.
- 2:17:14Speaker 8: So yeah.
- 2:17:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:17:15Speaker 8: Check it out.
- 2:17:16Speaker 1: I liked it so much more than... Well, again, I
- 2:17:18Speaker 1: came in knowing he was involved. So I did already
- 2:17:21Speaker 1: have my bar set a little higher because it was involved.
- 2:17:25Speaker 1: But if you would have told me years ago that
- 2:17:28Speaker 1: I was going to enjoy a Predator movie this much,
- 2:17:31Speaker 1: I would have been like, are you... Are you sure?
- 2:17:33Speaker 1: Are we talking about the same predator? Yeah. This isn't
- 2:17:35Speaker 1: like the ketchup predator, because those aren't funny either. Like,
- 2:17:37Speaker 1: what are we talking about? Right, right. What are you
- 2:17:41Speaker 1: selling me? So the fact that it somehow came around
- 2:17:44Speaker 1: to this and Dan made it work, like, more power
- 2:17:46Speaker 1: to you, man.
- 2:17:47Speaker 7: This is impressive.
- 2:17:48Speaker 8: Yeah, it felt like a movie, not like a movie.
- 2:17:50Speaker 8: a placeholder, you know?
- 2:17:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:17:52Speaker 7: Not a save the IP.
- 2:17:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:17:54Speaker 8: Yeah, exactly.
- 2:17:55Speaker 1: It actually had something to say, a story to tell
- 2:17:58Speaker 1: characters to bring us like, yeah, it's impressive.
- 2:18:01Speaker 8: Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
- 2:18:04Speaker 1: Cool. Cool. We went on quite a predator journey there. So, um, yeah. Yeah.
- 2:18:10Speaker 7: Do you have anything to say to wrap up.
- 2:18:13Speaker 1: Your entire run here?
- 2:18:15Speaker 3: No.
- 2:18:16Speaker 7: Or any parting words of wisdom to anyone?
- 2:18:18Speaker 8: Absolutely. No, I don't. I mean, they should see it,
- 2:18:20Speaker 8: but I'm about to go completely nonverbal here.
- 2:18:24Speaker 1: This is the most talking we've done in months.
- 2:18:27Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:18:28Speaker 1: It's been a while.
- 2:18:29Speaker 7: Since we were on one of these, actually.
- 2:18:30Speaker 1: So, yeah, I realize that's the only time I talk
- 2:18:33Speaker 1: to humans is on the show. Absolutely. And yours are
- 2:18:36Speaker 1: always the most extended of conversations.
- 2:18:39Speaker 8: That was maybe a little more precious. It was a
- 2:18:41Speaker 8: little ambitious.
- 2:18:42Speaker 1: It's the only time I have these kind of conversations.
- 2:18:45Speaker 8: Yeah, it was a little ambitious to go over all...
- 2:18:48Speaker 8: I tried to hit all the Predator movies, but that
- 2:18:51Speaker 8: was a lot.
- 2:18:51Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know that I knew we were
- 2:18:53Speaker 1: going to go as in-depth as we did, but yet
- 2:18:55Speaker 1: I kind of did because I knew it was both
- 2:18:57Speaker 1: of us.
- 2:18:58Speaker 8: Yeah, it kind of needed to happen. It kind of
- 2:19:01Speaker 8: needed to... It was like.
- 2:19:04Speaker 8: If you ever had anything you wanted to say about
- 2:19:06Speaker 8: a Predator movie, this was your opportunity, so.
- 2:19:10Speaker 1: And I don't know that you can't, again, you probably
- 2:19:14Speaker 1: should jump from the first one to these last three,
- 2:19:16Speaker 1: but like you kind of can't without experiencing at least
- 2:19:20Speaker 1: a wrap up of all the weird missteps along the
- 2:19:23Speaker 1: way and attempting something.
- 2:19:26Speaker 7: And it didn't work.
- 2:19:27Speaker 1: And like, so yeah, it kind of brings it in
- 2:19:30Speaker 1: perspective and makes you appreciate these last three even more.
- 2:19:33Speaker 5: That's it.
- 2:19:34Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 2:19:35Speaker 7: It's about the journey.
- 2:19:37Speaker 1: It is.
- 2:19:37Speaker 7: Take your pack and go on a journey.
- 2:19:39Speaker 5: That's it.
- 2:19:40Speaker 8: That's it. Grab your CG monkey and get out there.
- 2:19:43Speaker 1: Get out for the ride.
- 2:19:45Speaker 8: That's it. All right.
- 2:19:48Speaker 1: Well, thank you.
- 2:19:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:19:50Speaker 1: And thank you for anyone out there that is hung
- 2:19:53Speaker 1: on for this crazy journey. And thanks for coming along
- 2:19:56Speaker 1: with us and being on this Badlands planet with us.
- 2:20:01Speaker 8: That's right. That's right.
- 2:20:03Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 2:20:04Speaker 1: Otherwise, that about does it. We will return next time.
- 2:20:07Speaker 1: Same geek feed. Thanks for listening. Thanks, y'all.
- 2:20:20Speaker 6: Listen up now, I'm a leader. You don't want a
- 2:20:23Speaker 6: dad by the hand that feeds you. I ain't never
- 2:20:25Speaker 6: been scared of the wrath of my demons. I'm a
- 2:20:28Speaker 6: monster and I have your bitches screaming. Hands up, I
- 2:20:32Speaker 6: am designer. Built from the ground and my house, it
- 2:20:35Speaker 6: gets higher. Open up the door, everything I desire. Back
- 2:20:39Speaker 6: down now.
- 2:20:39Speaker 15: I'm here to take what's mine.
- 2:20:42Speaker 3: One, two, three, four, drop the smoke and hit your door. Five, six, seven, eight,
- 2:20:44Speaker 3: hold up, let me demonstrate. I'm wired, I'm hot, we're starting,
- 2:20:46Speaker 3: can't stop, I come out, I'm talking.
- 2:20:47Speaker 1: I'm the predator.
- 2:20:47Speaker 3: I'm the predator.
- 2:20:52Speaker 1: I'm the predator.
- 2:21:17Speaker 15: I come fresh with the army. Heard you got the gasoline,
- 2:21:20Speaker 15: pour a little on me. I spit fire, I ain't
- 2:21:23Speaker 15: never been sorry. Belly of the beast, this is my
- 2:21:26Speaker 15: damn story. I always win hands down. Heavy is the
- 2:21:30Speaker 15: head that wears the crown. Handed down the play, but
- 2:21:34Speaker 15: I love the chase. R.I.P.
- 2:21:36Speaker 6: To the one that gets brave. 1, 2, 3, 4,
- 2:21:39Speaker 6: triple snacking at your door. 5, 6, 7, 8, hold up,
- 2:21:41Speaker 6: let me demonstrate.
- 2:21:43Speaker 3: I'm on it.
- 2:22:33Speaker 8: I was going like, We are wasting so many more
- 2:23:01Speaker 8: words on AVP than needs to be said when we've
- 2:23:05Speaker 8: got this amazing movie to talk about here.
- 2:23:11Speaker 1: Again, by comparison, that makes it so much better when
- 2:23:14Speaker 1: we get there.
- 2:23:15Speaker 8: When we get there.
- 2:23:16Speaker 1: Look at all these messed up things they did years ago,
- 2:23:19Speaker 1: and then Dan comes in and just saves the franchise.
- 2:23:21Speaker 5: This episode is a production of Movie Meltdown, produced and
