- 0:09SPEAKER_02: Hi, I'm Dr.
- 0:10SPEAKER_02: Patty Ferris.
- 0:11SPEAKER_02: I'm a board-certified dermatologist, and I'm your host for this episode of Skin Care Confidential.
- 0:17SPEAKER_02: We're still basking in the glory of the 2024 Science of Skin Care Summit, which was amazing.
- 0:23SPEAKER_02: It was our best turnout, and I think our best scientific program member.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: We're excited to announce that 2025 is now open for registration.
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: That meeting will be held again in Austin, Texas, backed by popular demand.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: And we're going to be at the Fairmont Hotel September the 5th through the 7th.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: And we look forward to seeing you guys there, all of you skincare fishing anonymous and people interested in learning more about skincare.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: So I'm really excited about this episode of Skin Care Confidential because I've got a fellow Louisianin that I'm going to interview.
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: You don't know this, Keith, but I call you the Louisiana cowboy.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: So we're going to be talking to Keith O'Brien, who is the CEO and the founder of Hydrinity Skincare.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: And I'm going to read Keith's Bible because he's got an interesting background.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: He earned his marketing and management degree from the University of Louisiana and completed postgraduate training at both Harvard Business School and the Kellogg School of Management.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: He's a seasoned professional.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: You don't look old enough to have 30 years of effective leadership, but I'm going to give you that in skincare.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: In skincare, exactly.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: He's got 30 years of effective leadership experience in the life science industry.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: He's been on the executive leadership team that touched and built two startup organizations that produced exits in excess of 750 million, not too shabby.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: Prior to starting Hydrinity, he served as CEO for La Certa Life Sciences.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: He spent over 20 years with Pfizer Shire and has served in numerous leadership roles.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: So welcome to Science of Skin Care Summit and the Skin Care Confidential Podcast.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: We also want to thank you for being a supporter of the summit for the last two years.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: Super exciting.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: I love the summit was our very first show to do.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: Oh my goodness.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: I think I twisted your arm pretty good the day I mentioned.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: I'm like, Keith, you gotta be there.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: And I think it was a good show for you as well, wasn't it?
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: It was a great show.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: And who can say no to you, Patty?
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: So sweet.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: So one of the reasons that this interview actually happened was because Keith came down off the podium.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: He did a product theater at the Science of Skin Care Summit.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: And I thought to myself, for a CEO to get up on a podium and give that scientific presentation, I said, that was a lot of science.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: And you said, I'm bringing science to the Science of Skin Care Summit.
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: And I thought, we got to do a podcast and do a little deeper dive into this.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: So that's really was my impetus for inviting you because I was so impressed by your level of knowledge of the science behind the products that you are developing and putting into the marketplace.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: So let's start like at the very beginning of Hydrenity.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: I know you really say the company is rooted in regenerative medicine.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: And I remember a couple, I guess it was two years ago at the summit, you talking even about some personal experiences you had that led you into wound healing, which is always a lot of times an entree into that regenerative medicine space.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: So talk a little bit about the early genesis of the company.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: So, and again, thank you.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: It it is an honor and uh it's it's a privilege to because I I've seen the people that have been here before me, and my lineage does not stack up to theirs.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: So uh thank thank you.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Um no, hygienity was we were born out of a regenerative medicine company.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: We had um we had found a new source of hyuronic acid, and we developed an extraction method that used no heat, and we were building three-dimensional scaffolds for advanced wound care, and we were adding RHA into demerized bone putty for spine surgeries.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: About this time, this was this was kind of COVID time, and then the FDA said, Listen, we've decided hyaluron acid is a drug, and so all approvals now have to have PMA approval process, and with yours being an animal-based, it's gonna get extra scrutiny.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: And so, okay, that's fine.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: So we're working on that.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: But during that time, we had a little extra time, and I thought, okay, this is a pretty high hurdle.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: We'll get there, but it's gonna take a while.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: I thought, I wonder if our extraction process will work for streptococcal HA.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: And so, lo and behold, it did.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: So, we we were able we were able to develop a process different than anything else out there to extract the HA.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: And I think when you don't use heat on it, it just makes the HA molecule better and stronger.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: It mimics what's in your normal body, long and strong, has a lot of um extra surface space for peptides and antioxidants to attach to it.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: So, so we got so we went there, and then then I'm a huge I have a man crush on hyuronic acid.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: I just think it is underutilized in so many different ways.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: And I said, I wanted to use it as a carrier because there's some good data out there, especially in Europe, where they had they had had some pretty good success as using it as a carrier.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: So I so I knew some guys that ran a radiation oncology clinic for head and neck um patients.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Oh, um yeah.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: And I said, Listen, there's a lot of times they're they're vitamin K deficient.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Let's see if we can get vitamin K, if we can use this as a carrier.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: So we we developed an elixir and we put it, we put it on these patients, and we saw the vitamin K was kind of a failure, kind of it didn't work, and we just didn't form, we didn't do it long enough to really deal.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: But Patty, what we saw is these people had the most beautiful skin of anybody that I had ever seen.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: And you, you know, from experience, you know that head and neck radiation patients they get thrush and their skin sloughs off.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Patty, these people had they had beautiful skin, and at that point it be kind of it it almost became a moral obligation.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: It's okay, we got to figure out a way to how do we get this to more people.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: So from that day forward, we started developing our products, got into clinical trials, and just did this, did this the right way, separated the tote two companies, they're totally separate companies.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: So you have a wound, sort of a regenerative medicine.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: And that's still, yeah, and that that company's still going through the through the F FDA uh approval process and developing it, uses a different source of of HA.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Um But it just it was just amazing how how quickly and how efficacious just the just the HA in itself before we even started adding stuff to it.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: And at that point, we got I got real excited, and I said, okay, we have we this is something pretty special.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Um, first real advancement in hyaluron acid, probably in 25 years.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: And I said, okay, let's let's figure out how we get this to more people.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: I think I think the take-home message of that is it's not a Me Too hyaluronic acid product.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: It's really an innovative HA, and it's probably the reason you've had the success you've had with it.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: Talk a little bit.
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: I know you've got in your products, you've got multiple weights of HA and probably enhanced concentrations that so talk a little bit about those differences as well.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: And again, everything we do at hydrogen, we try to be very intentional about what we do.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I know it's a funny story, size matters, but size does matter, especially when you're talking about HA and molecular weight.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: So we use dual molecular weight.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: We use that high molecular weight for barrier for barrier control, um, for to help fight off the free radicals.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: But the low molecular weight is our delivery system.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: And what happens there is it takes the peptides and antioxidants to where it needs to be.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: Um and we're very precise.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: Our high molecular weight and our low molecular weight, if it's if the variance is off more than 1%, then I discard it.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: That's how particular we triple filter it.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: So not only is it the purest, but it's also the most precise in molecular weight.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: We use 100% injectable grade HA in all of our products.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: And so it's the only product that uses 100% injectable for a topical.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Um, and I think that matters.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: I think better ingredients give you better products, give you, give you better results.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: And and where we stopped, and at our high molecular weight, how many times have you tried as as a physician an HA?
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: Because there are a lot of HA products, but they're tacky and they're sticky.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they get sticky.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: And that's because the molecular high molecular weight's too high.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: I don't want a 4 million Dalton molecular weight on my face.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Now, stick it in my knee.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: I want it like maple syrup, but not on my face.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: And so we were, so we know exactly where to stop so you don't get that tacky, sticky feeling.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: The low molecular weight, you can't go too low because if you go too low, you cause inflammation and a chitosyme storm.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: So we stopped before you got that.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: And we were super intentional about what our high and what our low was.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: The other thing is you're right, it's concentrated.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: We have twice the amount of HA as any other product.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: That that's our filler.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: You you see a lot of these products, and there are great products out there, but there are some that just have fillers just to take up space.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: RHA is kind of our filler.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's we have twice the HA of any other product out there.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Um and it and I think that helps us in so many ways.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: So you mentioned the peptides, talk about that.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: You have a peptide complex that I know is a backbone of some of your products.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: I do.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Um we call it our polypeptide matrix.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: And so what we what we did is we have six plus peptides and antioxidants that we put together.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: I noticed a lot of people when when we did this, because we're new, we're new to the skin care.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Now, we're not new to medicine and advanced wind care and and skin health is it it's not that different.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: It's really not.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: You want you want you want rapid, expeditious healing.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: And so that's what we go for.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: But I noticed a lot of people when they formulated things, they were just adding things.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: It didn't make sense to me that they were together.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: I like I like to group things together.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: And so that's what we did is with our peptides, I put peptides in two categories.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: They're either signaling or in enzyme inhibiting.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: And so what we did is we made sure we put po both our hexapeptide leaf extract, it's like a retinol and it and it stimulates collagen for production, but the trifloral acidal tripeptide 2, let's just call it TT2 because I don't know if I can say that again, it inhibits progerine synthesis.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: And so when you model that, and then when you add the antioxidants to it, that's that's our core for our renewing and restoring.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: Plus, we add some other ingredients to that.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: The other thing is we balance those between negative and positive charged ingredients and molecules, because it matters the order that you put them in.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: RHA has a super high negative charge.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: So when we make these, we make them in small batches.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: We never put, unless it's intentional, two negatives at the same time.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: Because when you do, they don't bind with each other.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: They float around.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: So if you put a an a positive and a negative, then then they'll bind to each other.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: And you'll and that helps you with your delivery system.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: So there's a lot of different things that again we do intentional, and I think other people do also.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: I've just had the ability to learn from a lot of people and their success we copied and where they messed up, we we just we didn't we didn't do it.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: We did something else.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I just I just think if if you if you put the right combination of up together, and this is some some patented technology because they had never been put together.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: They had been done individually, but never together.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: And that's what we tried to do.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: It's like, man, these are really good stuff.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Let's put these together, and this this will accelerate our ha.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: And so that's that's how we got started with our polypeptide matrix.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: So you talked about two of what I would say are the hero products, the uh restorative serum and the renewing serum.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: So kind of explain the differences uh uh in terms of how a clinician might approach those and use those in in their practice.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: It's um and that's a great question, and we get that a lot.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: We I thought we were being, you know, you look back and say, well, I might would have done this different.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: So we name them restore and and renew.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: So our restorative serum, it's we call it it's our healing hydrator, where it works really the best is post-procedure.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, you can be as ablative as you want.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: You put this on right right away.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Right out.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: But really, it's compromised skin.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: Acne, eczema, uh, psoriasis.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: I have some of the best before and after pictures of um of acne patients that use this part of their regimen.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: And it's it just it really, really helps.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: But the post-procedure is where this really shines.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: And it is because all of our products, every every hydrant product is pH balanced, it's they're all anti-inflammatory, and and I think that's super important because when you do a procedure, Patty, nobody complains about the price of a procedure anymore.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: All they do is talk about how bad it hurts and they're downtime.
- 13:57SPEAKER_02: They downtime line.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: And so when we develop this, what we've what we've we were very intentional, we put a bunch of anti-inflammatories.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: So you have hemostasis is is the first, then you have inflammation and then cell proliferation.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: You don't heal until you start to get to proliferation and and remodeling.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: Inflammation is good, but you can't linger there.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: And so what hydrinity products do, they take away that inflammation and get you to the healing process.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: And I will say, even in our clinical studies, what we show on day two, you can see clinically significant difference in how in how people are healing.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: And I'm in clinics every day.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: I talk to people before and after you can when you put this on the next day, there are some people microneedle, you can't hardly even tell somebody had it.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: And it's just it's a true, it's that's that's one of the reasons the industry's embraced us is because we our products do the things that they say they're gonna do.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: Well, and you've studied them.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Also, um, and and I believe in that.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: It's you know, of course.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: We always say, in God, I trust everybody else, show me the data.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: And and and we knew that we were a new company coming out, so we knew we had to have the data, and so we so we did it.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: So so that's restorative.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: So renewing is um it's a daily hydrator.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: And we did a study of that.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: We did 71 patients.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: We did for this industry, that's that's a big study.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: That's a nice study.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: And so what we showed is that in two weeks, 81% of participants had smoother skin, 75% had brighter skin.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: What we what this does, it kind of lifts, tightens, and plumps.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: It helps get rid of those senescent cells.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: So when the renewing, it's it's your daily hydrator.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: Use it every day, especially if you have that dull skin.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: That dull skin is just senescent cells sitting there.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: They need they we need to stimulate fibroblasts, keratinocytes, collagen, and elastin to blow those, blow those cells off your skin.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: And that's that's where renewing is.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: It's just it's a great everyday.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: I don't like the word anti-aging.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but it's it's more your daily product that with all of your technology on it, the daily use product.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: And the other thing is with these two products when we came out, and this was we knew we only had a few products, so we worked real hard on form, fit, and function so that they could be used with other lines.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: Because even a couple of years ago, big protocols when people were using eight and ten and twelve regiments, uh, which I don't believe in, but that's yeah, and so but that's probably for another podcast.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: Um, what we did is but we made these where they could fit in.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: And so, because I believe in in in skinizing, and that's every hydrantity product does multiple things too.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: They don't just do one.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: Like our eye product gets rid of fine lines and wrinkles, puffiness, and dark circles.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: All our products do more than one thing, and so this really made this easy for us to to get established.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: I know your eye cream is popular, it's very popular.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: And so, how are you addressing multi-you obviously have multi-ingredients, it's a multitasking product, so it can affect all those issues that we see in the periorbital area.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and so it was it was one of this, and and again, that's where we had an advantage.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: We're not handicapped to the norms of the industry.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: And what what I started noticing, so I tell everybody all the time, we're driven by innovation, but we're guided by our partners.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: And everybody would go, and when I would go and and and and speak to people and meet people, they said, You've got to have an eye product.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: We love your stuff.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: You you guys would have a great eye product because they were using it anyway.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: And I said, Well, no, I I hadn't studied it there.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: And so I said, Well, okay, well, what are the so then I said, What are the what are the three things we need to do?
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: Fine lines and wrinkles, puffiness and dark circles.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: And I said, Okay, we'll make one.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: And somebody said, Well, no, you need two or three.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: And I said, No, no, no, we can do it.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: And and and we did.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: So again, you just take the ingredients and you play with them.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: And and Patty, sometimes I have this book, and you'll go through and you'll we'll we'll do different things in different um percentages or so.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: And you just have to work with it until you get it.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: You get it the right way.
- 18:17SPEAKER_02: Tweak your formulas.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Tweak your tweak your formula.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: Tweak your formulas until it really they start singing.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: You've got some other interesting things that I find really unusual for what I would call a luxury skincare line, which is really what you are.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: And that is that you have a product that has hypochlorous acid in it.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: That's your hyacinth product.
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: Talk about that like kind of random in the spectrum of everything we're talking about.
- 18:41SPEAKER_02: Well, what took you there?
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: It is, I fell in love with hyperchlorous acid in a in a previous life when we were hanging out in burn centers and wound care centers.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a wonderful ingredient.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: It's it's a it's a really good antibacterial, antiseptic, antiseptic product.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: The other thing is you can you can spray it in your mouth and your eye.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: And so a lot of plastic surgeons, periorbal, when they when they do surgeries, they they would use that.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: The other thing is there's over a hundred and a hundred published articles, you know, about the safety and how well it works.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: It's a potent anti-inflammatory agent.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: And again, that's a huge a huge driver for me.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: I won't, I inflammation is bad in everything we do.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: It's bad in your gut, it's bad in your skin, it's bad in your joints.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: And so when when I saw this, I thought, this would be, I don't know why well, I do know why people didn't use it in in skincare.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: It's because it wasn't stable.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: That's the thing about hyperchlorous acid.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: Light difficult to formulate.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: It's different to formulate.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: We were able to do it in an FDA-approved facility.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: Our bottles are triple walled, so you get no light, and our pumps are airless.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: So it's stable for two years.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: The other thing is what we did is we we made it luxury because we micronized the mist.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: You'll see a lot of hyperchlorous acids.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: They pour it or you spray it and it hits you and it runs down your face.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: Well, this it's a micronized mist, and we micronized it so it gets in the pores and it cleans them out.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: It makes every product better after that.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: And the other thing I wanted to use it for is we came out, we came out with kits, our post-procedure kit.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: So you can use the hyacinth pre-peri- and post-procedure.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: That way you don't have to use the alcohol to prep the skin, it dries it out.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: That's what that's the last thing you want to do when you had procedures dry your skin out.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: Um, I just I thought it fit great in skincare.
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: And you know, it certainly does in the pre and post-procedure.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: And we are a luxury brand, but I tell people all the time, no, we're where science meets luxury.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: You have some brands that are total luxury and you have some of their total science.
- 20:51SPEAKER_00: I like to think we fit in the crossroad pretty, pretty well.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: You you certainly have developed a lot of products that fit that niche.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: Talk about vivid brightening, because that's another one.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's an interesting product, and you went it right after skin lightning and brightening, which is a huge issue.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: It is, you know, you're you're not supposed to have a favorite child, but this may this may be not a favorite.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: It could be just because you're right.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: We we went at it a different way.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: Um, we said no to hydroquinone.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: Hydroquinone is a great ingredient.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: It's just exactly what it's supposed to do.
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: On the good side, it's not a very popular ingredient anymore.
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: But but it's we don't like to use it, but boy, it's almost irreplaceable in the derm's hands, I can tell you.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: No, it is.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: The problem is you only have a small percent of the population that really at the at the at the efficacy level, not a lot of people just can't they can't tolerate it.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: And so they don't want to use it.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: Yes, and so and you can't use it long term for sure.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: No.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: So we looked at it and we said, okay, pigmentation's difficult.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: So I said, let's let's Attack it at multiple layers, not only on the treatment part, but let's see if we can prevent pigmentation from occurring.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: And so, and and how do we keep the skin hydrated?
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: So, what we did, Patty, is we took our renewing serum because it has some HA, it has Kakadu Plum in there, which is a great bright, it's our it's our vitamin, it's the vitamin C that we love the most, just because of how how potent it is, and you don't but you don't get the vitamin C side effects.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: And so we said, let's treat it and let's let's let's prevent it.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: And so we started putting ingredients.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: So we took our renew as our base, and then we added 14 active ingredients to it.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: Oh, and I was no, it is power packed with that, but I think that's the reason that it still that it works so good.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: Um, it's got this cool ingredient.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: Um I I I I love sourcing ingredients from from all over.
- 22:53SPEAKER_02: You you know, I wanted to ask you that question because I know you do.
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: You mentioned the caca.
- 22:58SPEAKER_02: What is it?
- 22:58SPEAKER_02: Cakadoo plum.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: Cakadoo plum, and it's only grown on the northern shore of Australia.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: They have the highest UV index of anywhere in the world.
- 23:08SPEAKER_02: So that plum that plum is full of antioxidants to protect itself.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: Yes, absolutely.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: It survived.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: It's survived.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: Survived because of it.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: Um in the in only the area it grows in, there's an indigenous tribe there, and that's how they make that's how they make their money now.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: So they they protect they protect that.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: Uh, but it's a hundred times more potent than what an orange is.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: And so it's so I love using it because you can use a little bit of it without the flare that you get with some some vitamin C.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: Um, and so so that's one, and then we just we added oligo peptide, you know, 60 68 is one of my favorite.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: It inhibits the MITF gene.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: And so if you can inhibit that, you don't do it.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: The other thing is, and you'll appreciate this, being from Louisiana and here in the south, where it's so hot, is everybody thinks pigmentation is a sun issue, it's a heat issue, also.
- 24:02SPEAKER_02: Well, it's heat too, sure.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: And so you get places like our friend Dr.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: Chili Curry, I was talking to him the other day, and he said last summer they had 72 days in a row, it was over 100 degrees.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: There they're in Houston.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: And so we we added the agashi Mexicana flour in there because it reduces your skin temperature by one degree Celsius.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: And so not only do we treat it, we try to prevent it.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: And and they're there, and this is really good because sometimes people go into pigmentation, they'll get their lasers or the chemical pills.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: And what we have found is not only can you use this to treatment for reds and browns, but it also prevents the breakthroughs when somebody who really needs, when they need therapy and treatments, this is a good thing to add to that to extend the time between treatments that that they have to do.
- 24:50SPEAKER_02: Um I'm sure you've got anti-inflammatories in there as well.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: Yes, we do.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: We do a lot.
- 24:56SPEAKER_02: That's another piece of that puzzle.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: It is absolutely a piece of that puzzle.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: Um and so it's just I I just I love that product because I think it does so not only that, it smooths, it smooths your skin out.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: So even if you don't, we all have some pigment issue.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: But what we've done is if you if you if you feel this product, it's probably it's just velvet and it just layers in with any other thing that you use.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: I tell everybody this should this should be the one product that no matter what other what other thing you're using, this was good because it hydrates your skin, it helps your pigmentation, it smooths it out, takes the redness away.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: It's it's a great and and you can use it there's not many pigment products you can use twice a day.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: You you can actually use this one twice a day.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: So it's nice.
- 25:41SPEAKER_02: It's nice, nice, nice.
- 25:43SPEAKER_02: Um another thing I think interesting about the company is the expansion you've had in such a short period of time.
- 25:51SPEAKER_02: So well, you were kind of a new kid on the block when we met two years ago.
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: Well, when what year did you start Hydrenity?
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: Uh 22 September of 22.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: So we're just barely two two years old, yes.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh, it's unbelievable.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: And you've gone international this year.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we have.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: We've uh we're in 22, we're approved in 22 countries already, and you know, our goal next year is to double that.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: So we should be we should be 45 uh by by this by this time by this time next year.
- 26:21SPEAKER_02: International expansion is not for the fainted heart.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: No, it's you've got to set up all this distribution and I mean that's incredible.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: It's you know what, hey, we've been blessed.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: The the medical aesthetics community is real, they they've embraced us.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: Um and I I think we've tried we've we've been very intentional, and I think we've done things for for the most part the right way.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: We started out with clinical, um, with clinical trials.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: The other thing is we kept it simple.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: Um and I I think our timing was was right.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: Um we you know we launched with a mantra, two pumps twice a day.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: Give us two minutes and we'll get give you two minutes.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: Give us two minutes and we'll give you results in two weeks.
- 27:04SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's amazing.
- 27:05SPEAKER_02: That's very catchy.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: And it's and not and it is catchy.
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: It's it's you know, it's a sales and marketing mantra, but it's also scientifically proven.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: And that's that's people are patient now.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: I read an article the other day it says the Rosacea Society that 78% of the patients started on a treatment protocol for rosacea stop within 30 days.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: And and rosacea, it's you know, if if if you're tough, really tough condition.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: It's a tough condition.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: And so so if they stop theirs, then then you need to do we need to deliver results really quick.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: And that's and I think that's one of the reasons that the community has embraced us is just because we we do give good results.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: And um well, I also think you have the advantage of you're able to deliver the results, and there really is little downside because of the ingredients that are in the formulations.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: So, you know, we we've we've talked about it recently.
- 28:10SPEAKER_02: Like, are the retinoids sort of gonna be passe?
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: Because we know they work, but they do have significant downsides, some of them.
- 28:19SPEAKER_02: Not not all.
- 28:19SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of friendly ones, but you know, we're we're now seeing coming into the marketplace things like this that really can heal, keep the barrier intact, and fortify the barrier.
- 28:30SPEAKER_02: You know, I love using it HA as a carrier molecule.
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's very innovative and interesting as well.
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: So, you know, you can use things like this without the downside of some other ingredients.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: And that's what I think one of the reasons you're finding so much success in the physician's office.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: Because the last thing we want to do is put something on somebody post-procedure that's gonna give them a problem.
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: And believe me, they do that themselves.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: They go home and put something on invariably.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: Yes, they do.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: Invariably, if a the patient comes back from a laser procedure and they have a problem and you're looking at them, you gotta say, What did you put on this?
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: Because more than likely they put something on that messed it up.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: They did something, pulled out some Vaseline or they did some of these.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: Who knows what they do?
- 29:16SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 29:16SPEAKER_02: Who knows what they're gonna put on?
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: They put goodness gracious.
- 29:20SPEAKER_02: So we're of course I told you this was gonna go fast and we're literally are almost done, but I want to hear one thing.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: What's that?
- 29:27SPEAKER_02: What do you think is the future for Hydrinity?
- 29:30SPEAKER_02: Where where do you think you're going with this line?
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: We I know it's a it's a big question.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: And you know, it it is, um, but we do like to look forward.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, um, we're gonna continue to innovate.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: And we've got some um we've got some new products that are we hear in in 25 and in 26 that are that are different that the industry hasn't seen before.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: And so we're we're going to continue to innovate.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: Um we're gonna drive drive with science, but we're still gonna have that form, fit, and function is is really important to us.
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: So things are gonna still gonna feel like hydrogenity products, but we're we're gonna do some things that haven't been done before in in the industry as far as as products, some combination of what we're gonna do.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: And and what I tell the team all the time, and our is let's just be the best at everything we do.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: Don't worry about being let's let's be the best formulators, let's be the best partners, let's do the best products.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: Everything else kind of takes kind of takes care of itself.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: And so if you're doing the right things, then you're gonna be successful.
- 30:43SPEAKER_02: And that's why I think in the short two years you've been in the marketplace, you've had so much success because you're you're doing it very thoughtfully and you're doing it with science.
- 30:51SPEAKER_02: You're leading with science and then you're testing your products.
- 30:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and this is what the dermatology community and the medical community needs to see.
- 30:59SPEAKER_02: I'll I'll give you a task before we close.
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: Could you look at your products for crepey skin?
- 31:05SPEAKER_02: Because I'll bet you anything, they're gonna perform very, very well in that intrinsically aged crepey skin.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: They do.
- 31:13SPEAKER_02: With the peptides, they have to, and all those HA.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: I I will tell you, because we we we launched a mask um this year, and but it's a it's a fake, it's it's a facial mask, and it's it's so beautiful.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: It's got hydrolyzed HA in it.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: Um it's post-procedure, but it's also a good Friday night date, too.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: It's it's it's lovely.
- 31:34SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: Um, and what we did is we overfilled by 20%.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: So at the bottom of it, there's some serum, and I've gotten more compliments for for neck and declicate.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: That's how that's how they use it.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: Because I didn't want to do a face and a neck, because those they kind of get wieldy.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: And so what we did is we just said we'll we'll take the physical part for the face and we'll use the the liquid part of the phone.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: You can use the residual, yeah.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: Those areas.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and crepey skin.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm glad you said that because there there may be there may be something on the way for that.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: And I'm sure there, I'm sure there is.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: I don't even think I could get ahead of the of you.
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: No.
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: That was a personal, a personal request since I have so much crepey skin.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: Just work on that for me, Keith.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: We're gonna wrap this.
- 32:22SPEAKER_02: This has been more fun.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: I knew it would be.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: The Louisiana Cowboy never disappoints.
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much for supporting our meeting.
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: We hope you'll be back next year.
- 32:32SPEAKER_02: And good luck with all your venture.
- 32:34SPEAKER_02: And thanks everybody for listening to this episode of Skincare Confidential.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: Thanks, everybody.
