- 0:22Speaker 1: it was Team Chase or Team Sewell. This year, there
- 0:25Speaker 1: are a wide variety of possibilities and we'll discuss them
- 0:29Speaker 1: before going on the record with our predictions. The Bengals

- 0:54Speaker 1: or computer by subscribing wherever you get your podcasts. It's
- 0:58Speaker 1: the greatest thing since Williamsburg Wildcats broadcaster Mike Fisher. My
- 1:05Speaker 1: son is playing JV baseball this year and last Saturday
- 1:08Speaker 1: his team had a game at Williamsburg High School. When
- 1:11Speaker 1: I got there, the varsity game was still in progress,
- 1:14Speaker 1: and when I took a seat, I heard somebody doing
- 1:17Speaker 1: play by play nearby, and he sounded great. His name
- 1:21Speaker 1: is Mike Fisher, and he calls baseball, basketball, football, and
- 1:25Speaker 1: soccer on the internet for Wildcats Sports Radio. It's obvious
- 1:29Speaker 1: he puts his heart and soul into it and his
- 1:31Speaker 1: dedication is greatly appreciated by the Williamsburg community. So here's
- 1:36Speaker 1: to you, Mike. It was a pleasure to meet and
- 1:39Speaker 1: listen to you. Now time for my final pre draft
- 1:43Speaker 1: podcast with Dave Lapham, which is typically one of the
- 1:46Speaker 1: most downloaded episodes of the year, since everybody wants to
- 1:50Speaker 1: know who lap thinks the Bengals are going to pick.
- 1:54Speaker 1: I'll tell you in advance that we make our predictions
- 1:57Speaker 1: about forty two minutes in to an hour conversation, and
- 2:01Speaker 1: we answered the questions you submitted on Twitter right after that.
- 2:05Speaker 1: But Dave Lapham is one of the world's best storytellers,
- 2:09Speaker 1: and he didn't disappoint when I brought up his draft
- 2:12Speaker 1: experience forty eight years ago. Lap I want to start
- 2:16Speaker 1: by turning the clock back to your draft. It took
- 2:19Speaker 1: place in late January back then, nineteen seventy four, there
- 2:23Speaker 1: were twenty six teams in the NFL at the time.
- 2:26Speaker 1: The draft was seventeen rounds, four hundred and forty two
- 2:29Speaker 1: draft picks. That year, you were the ninth pick of
- 2:33Speaker 1: the third round, number sixty one overall. That would be
- 2:35Speaker 1: a second round draft pick. Now, did you anticipate what
- 2:39Speaker 1: round you were going to be selected in and did
- 2:42Speaker 1: you have any idea of what teams are interested? I
- 2:45Speaker 1: really didn't. I had no idea what teams were interested.
- 2:49Speaker 1: But after making the rounds at the All Star Games
- 2:53Speaker 1: after my senior year at Syracuse, playing the Blue Gray Game,
- 2:56Speaker 1: the East West Shrine Game, the Hula Bowl, Senior Bowl.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Played in all four of them. The way the calendar
- 3:00Speaker 1: worked out that year, it was great. I was gone
- 3:02Speaker 1: for six weeks traveling playing football like this feels like
- 3:07Speaker 1: the National Football League. It was awesome one all four
- 3:10Speaker 1: of them too. I mean we ran the table, so
- 3:13Speaker 1: that was that was good as well. And you know,
- 3:16Speaker 1: after I was done with those games, you know, I
- 3:19Speaker 1: wouldn't hear from people that, oh, you know, you're you're
- 3:22Speaker 1: looking at probably somewhere between rounds two and five. There's
- 3:26Speaker 1: a good chance you probably put yourself in that kind
- 3:28Speaker 1: of a situation, the high end would be second round
- 3:31Speaker 1: and low end would be fifth round. But I had
- 3:33Speaker 1: no idea, you know what teams had the most interest
- 3:37Speaker 1: because back then it was still different. It was done
- 3:40Speaker 1: by stale mail. I mean, you'd get get these questionnaires
- 3:43Speaker 1: from the Dallas Cowboys every three days to fill out
- 3:46Speaker 1: information about the Dallas Cowboys. That was the team that
- 3:49Speaker 1: I got the most correspondence from by far. But I
- 3:52Speaker 1: was hopeful, you know, being a Boston guy who would
- 3:55Speaker 1: have liked to play for the Patriots, and I really
- 3:57Speaker 1: liked the Rams helmets. They've grown up, so I would
- 3:59Speaker 1: stay and I want to be a Ram go out
- 4:04Speaker 1: to the West coast with Roman Gabriel. Well, I've heard
- 4:07Speaker 1: Mike Browns say since that he remembers seeing you, and
- 4:10Speaker 1: I don't know if it was in a Syracuse regular
- 4:12Speaker 1: season game or if it was at one of those
- 4:14Speaker 1: four All Star games. You're talking about. At an All
- 4:16Speaker 1: Star game then where he saw you in the trainer
- 4:18Speaker 1: room or a training room or in the locker room,
- 4:21Speaker 1: and just like the way you were put together, thought
- 4:23Speaker 1: that you looked like the way an NFL player was
- 4:26Speaker 1: supposed to look. Do you have any memory of any
- 4:29Speaker 1: contact with Bengals people I remember seeing after the fact,
- 4:34Speaker 1: once you come to the organization. I remember seeing Bengals people,
- 4:37Speaker 1: you know there. I remember seeing Tiger Johnson. I remember
- 4:40Speaker 1: in the one on one pass rush drills at the
- 4:43Speaker 1: Senior Bowl. I mean they got right up on top
- 4:45Speaker 1: of you, and it was because you know, they would
- 4:47Speaker 1: take sixteen millimeter film, but there was no immediate you know,
- 4:51Speaker 1: things you could look at to evaluate how the guys
- 4:53Speaker 1: performed or whatever. And a lot of teams didn't want
- 4:55Speaker 1: to wait for sixteen millimeter film at the end of
- 4:58Speaker 1: the week, so they sent people there. And I remember
- 5:02Speaker 1: seeing Tiger, you know, like now after the fact. I
- 5:04Speaker 1: remember seeing him kind of upfront um looking at those
- 5:07Speaker 1: one on one pass rush drills, and it really was
- 5:10Speaker 1: I mean, you felt like you were you were an
- 5:13Speaker 1: animal in the zoo, you know, you were cads in there,
- 5:16Speaker 1: and there was a ton of pressure. I remember just
- 5:18Speaker 1: thinking and I just hope, I just stay with your technique,
- 5:23Speaker 1: do what you've been coached. And I remember going against
- 5:26Speaker 1: dead two tall Jones, first pick in that draft, first
- 5:29Speaker 1: pick in that draft, yep, and uh, and he was
- 5:32Speaker 1: he was massive, six foot eight. I think his arms
- 5:36Speaker 1: were eight foot six, he had a huge wingspan um
- 5:39Speaker 1: and and as a tackle and then as a guard.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I remember going against Carl Barzoloskis, who was early first
- 5:45Speaker 1: round pick of the Jets, played at Indiana, Big Barzo.
- 5:49Speaker 1: So it was two different styles of guy. Um, And
- 5:53Speaker 1: you know thought, you know, I kind of held my own.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I think I did okay. You know, so after the fact,
- 5:59Speaker 1: all kinds of things go through your mind, overreacting positively
- 6:03Speaker 1: and overreacting negatively. Um. But it was it was kind
- 6:07Speaker 1: of like Who's who? Because I was I always proud
- 6:09Speaker 1: of myself on stand on top of you know, NFL
- 6:13Speaker 1: people as much as I couldn't. You know, look around
- 6:15Speaker 1: and you see you know, Gil Brandt over there, you know,
- 6:17Speaker 1: and Tom Land are you over here? And you know
- 6:20Speaker 1: different uh, different people from different teams and organizations, you know,
- 6:25Speaker 1: dotting all over those crowds of people at those practices.
- 6:29Speaker 1: The Senior Bowl was the one. I mean, the others
- 6:32Speaker 1: had their share of people, but the Senior Bowl was
- 6:35Speaker 1: packed with that kind of that kind of stuff. The
- 6:37Speaker 1: Draft wasn't televised in nineteen seventy four. The first year
- 6:40Speaker 1: it was on TV on ESPN was nineteen eighty. Cell
- 6:43Speaker 1: phones obviously didn't exist exist back then. So you've described
- 6:47Speaker 1: to me before how you got the call on a
- 6:50Speaker 1: pay phone in the dorm at Syracuse University. Who who
- 6:54Speaker 1: made that phone call? Who was on the other end
- 6:55Speaker 1: of the line, Bill Tiger Johnson. Yep, Tiger gave me
- 7:00Speaker 1: the gave me the call and said, uh, you know, congratulations,
- 7:04Speaker 1: we just took you with the sixty first pick in
- 7:06Speaker 1: the draft. Um, we're flying you out here tomorrow. You
- 7:10Speaker 1: better be in decent shape. They did. They basically flew,
- 7:16Speaker 1: We're going to fly you out to quote meet the media,
- 7:18Speaker 1: the local media, and met the local media for fifteen
- 7:22Speaker 1: or twenty minutes, then went out in the field shorts,
- 7:25Speaker 1: t shirt, and and he just did a thorough workout
- 7:30Speaker 1: to find out a little bit more about you know,
- 7:33Speaker 1: have me pulling going through like obstacle course type things
- 7:37Speaker 1: almost like the three cone drill that that's in existence now,
- 7:40Speaker 1: and I just wanted to see like more overall athletic
- 7:42Speaker 1: ability and all that sort of thing. And then we
- 7:44Speaker 1: had our first you know, rookie mini camp, and then
- 7:48Speaker 1: the veterans came in the last couple of days of
- 7:51Speaker 1: that and it was literally full contact without helmets or paths.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I mean they were coming after the rooks, you know,
- 7:57Speaker 1: to test you out, see see what kind of player
- 8:00Speaker 1: you were going to be, and if you could if
- 8:03Speaker 1: you're gonna wine and moan and complain, or if you're
- 8:05Speaker 1: going to just come back for more or whatever. So
- 8:07Speaker 1: it was. It was an indoctrination for sure. And your
- 8:10Speaker 1: college buddies at the QUES did not leave you in
- 8:13Speaker 1: good shape between getting the news that you were drafted
- 8:16Speaker 1: and that Tiger Johnson workout the next day. No, I was,
- 8:19Speaker 1: I was a hurting unit. I mean, my older brother
- 8:23Speaker 1: came up for the draft and U my college roommate
- 8:26Speaker 1: and a bunch of guys in the team. You know shots,
- 8:28Speaker 1: you know, it was taking shot shots. I was. I
- 8:32Speaker 1: was struggling the next day, struggling to get up, and
- 8:36Speaker 1: my older brother basically made sure I got got on
- 8:39Speaker 1: the plane because if I had missed that plane, I
- 8:41Speaker 1: would have been in bad, bad trouble. But I got
- 8:43Speaker 1: on that plane, and the flight attendant saw I was
- 8:46Speaker 1: in bad shape. I knew I was a hurting unit,
- 8:48Speaker 1: and she graciously gave me a six packet Coca Cola.
- 8:52Speaker 1: She said, she said, I think you might need these.
- 8:56Speaker 1: You look like you need to have something to try
- 8:58Speaker 1: to settle your stomach and everything down. I said, I'd
- 9:01Speaker 1: bless you, thank you. I probably drank three of them
- 9:04Speaker 1: on the flight out. I was I was hurting unit man. So,
- 9:07Speaker 1: as I mentioned, seventeen rounds in the draft back in
- 9:10Speaker 1: nineteen seventy four, the Bengals actually had twenty two picks
- 9:14Speaker 1: in your draft. What was it like when twenty two
- 9:17Speaker 1: guys showed up after being selected in the draft? Yeah,
- 9:20Speaker 1: I mean, I thought, is this our team? They just
- 9:23Speaker 1: drafted a whole team. It was. It was incredible. There
- 9:28Speaker 1: were a lot of bodies that were run through at
- 9:30Speaker 1: that point in time, and there were there weren't many
- 9:34Speaker 1: college free agents because you know, what the heck, you
- 9:36Speaker 1: got twenty two draft picks, so there weren't any guys.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Not that many guys that came after the draft to
- 9:43Speaker 1: come and try out. Seventeen rounds, like you said, well
- 9:46Speaker 1: over four hundred guys. I'm not sure there were many guys.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Many guys left, but yeah, it was such a different animal,
- 9:53Speaker 1: such a different day back then. And one more thing
- 9:56Speaker 1: about you know, working out with Tiger, you know he
- 9:59Speaker 1: wanted to tie I mean the forty again to see
- 10:01Speaker 1: how it compared Knights did coach? I got to confess
- 10:05Speaker 1: that I had a long night last night. He goes,
- 10:08Speaker 1: you had a long night. What do you mean? I saw.
- 10:10Speaker 1: I celebrated with my friends and family after the draft,
- 10:13Speaker 1: and I overindulged and I was up late. Are you
- 10:17Speaker 1: an alcoholic? Which his first work. He goes, do we
- 10:21Speaker 1: need to help you? You're an alcoholic? I said no, no,
- 10:23Speaker 1: but I was last night, I think, and I couldn't
- 10:26Speaker 1: even run a straight line or by forty. He goes,
- 10:28Speaker 1: you're a little faster a couple of days ago. I said,
- 10:30Speaker 1: I can't get a straight line going here. It was.
- 10:33Speaker 1: It was funny, it really was. The first round draft
- 10:35Speaker 1: picked that year by the Bengals was Billy Klar, your
- 10:37Speaker 1: long time friend, still an NFL coach, had a fine career,
- 10:41Speaker 1: played eight years in the NFL, but you had the
- 10:43Speaker 1: longest career of anybody of those twenty two ten NFL
- 10:46Speaker 1: seasons a couple more in the USFL. How big of
- 10:48Speaker 1: a point of pride is that? Yeah? I think you know,
- 10:52Speaker 1: as a lineman, you hope to if you can play,
- 10:54Speaker 1: you hope to be you know, reliable, dependable, accountable all
- 10:58Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. And with that availability, there's another
- 11:01Speaker 1: big available ability to have or liability accountability availability. And um,
- 11:07Speaker 1: I did pride myself and that I you know really
- 11:10Speaker 1: um high school, college and NFL. I tried to not
- 11:15Speaker 1: not only not miss games, I tried to not miss
- 11:17Speaker 1: practices if at all possible. And UM, so that that
- 11:21Speaker 1: that was a mindset of mine from from way back.
- 11:25Speaker 1: And I think it was you know, I kind of
- 11:28Speaker 1: even bread from a family traite kind of thing. You know,
- 11:30Speaker 1: my dad was a work or guy, never never missed
- 11:33Speaker 1: a day at work, was never sick. You know, my
- 11:35Speaker 1: mom same way. Um, so you know that that was
- 11:39Speaker 1: kind of the mentality if if somebody was going to
- 11:41Speaker 1: employ you, you show up and you grind every day.
- 11:45Speaker 1: You do everything you possibly can to make sure that
- 11:48Speaker 1: they realized that, you know, they made a good decision
- 11:50Speaker 1: about you or whatever. So that that was a that
- 11:53Speaker 1: was a big source source of pride, was you know,
- 11:55Speaker 1: being able to play a long time and not miss
- 11:59Speaker 1: many games and so doing as I mentioned ed two
- 12:01Speaker 1: tall Jones was the first pick in your draft in
- 12:03Speaker 1: nineteen seventy four. And then you have the Steelers who
- 12:06Speaker 1: famously drafted four Hall of famers, Lynn Swan, Jack Lambert,
- 12:09Speaker 1: John Stalworth, and Mike Webster. They also signed Donnie A.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Shell as an undrafted free agent. He made the Hall
- 12:16Speaker 1: of Fame. There were six Hall of famers in your draft,
- 12:19Speaker 1: Dave Kasper, the tight end of the Raiders was the sixth.
- 12:22Speaker 1: The Steelers got five of the six guys that wound
- 12:25Speaker 1: up in the Hall of Fame. And honestly, that draft
- 12:28Speaker 1: class probably caused you a Super Bowl ring or two.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Put him over the top, I mean, no question about it.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Donnie Shell wasn't even one of the former guys drafted,
- 12:38Speaker 1: I mean college free agent. Was seventeen rounds in the
- 12:40Speaker 1: draft in the Hall of Fame. Unbelievable. Tells you a
- 12:43Speaker 1: lot about the culture you know and their ability to evaluate.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Mike Webster a really good friend of mine, got to
- 12:50Speaker 1: know him really well in those All Star Games. And
- 12:52Speaker 1: fifth round pick, you know at the center position. Yeah,
- 12:57Speaker 1: they you talked about putting them out in the ball.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Lynn Swan, who they drafted in the first round. He
- 13:02Speaker 1: won the Senior Bowl for US. He caught the game
- 13:05Speaker 1: winning touchdown pass from David James out of Kansas quarterback
- 13:09Speaker 1: out of Kansas, and we got fifteen hundred dollars a
- 13:12Speaker 1: piece instead of seven fifty seven fifty to lose a
- 13:15Speaker 1: fifteen hundred to the winner. And I was popular on
- 13:17Speaker 1: campus span as soon as I get back that fifteen hundred,
- 13:19Speaker 1: woe quick we went up to two. Come to the
- 13:22Speaker 1: club tcs. That fifteen hundred went pretty fast. One other
- 13:28Speaker 1: interesting nugget about your draft, and then we'll move on
- 13:31Speaker 1: to this year's draft. No quarterbacks taken in the first
- 13:34Speaker 1: two rounds, not just the first round, the first two rounds.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Danny White was finally selected in the third round by
- 13:40Speaker 1: the Cowboys, right, and the Bengals took one as I
- 13:42Speaker 1: would called Mike Burula was taken by the Bengals in
- 13:44Speaker 1: the fourth round out of Stanford, So you know, he
- 13:48Speaker 1: felt like, you know, one of the one of the
- 13:50Speaker 1: highest guys selected the draft, even though you know it's
- 13:53Speaker 1: a fourth round selection. But again, you know, be closer
- 13:58Speaker 1: to the third round selection in today's foot all with
- 14:00Speaker 1: the more teams you know, participating in the draft. But
- 14:04Speaker 1: that that was interesting, and I wonder, I wonder how
- 14:07Speaker 1: many will be taken in this year's draft, you know,
- 14:09Speaker 1: I mean it's Willis is mind boggling. To me, the
- 14:14Speaker 1: quarterback from Liberty. I've seen him in mock Drafts's number two.
- 14:17Speaker 1: I've seen him at thirty two, and I've seen him
- 14:19Speaker 1: out of the first round and not even draft in
- 14:21Speaker 1: the first round. So it just goes to show you
- 14:24Speaker 1: this year, boy, everybody's opinions are all over the board
- 14:27Speaker 1: about a lot of different guys. All right, we turned
- 14:30Speaker 1: to this year's draft. We had lunch last week with
- 14:33Speaker 1: our friend John Burns and his son Johnny. We were
- 14:36Speaker 1: discussing the draft, and at one point you gave a
- 14:39Speaker 1: detailed scouting report from watching tape of Nebraska center Cam Jurgens,
- 14:45Speaker 1: who is projected to go in the second round. And
- 14:47Speaker 1: I thought to myself, how many guys do you study
- 14:51Speaker 1: and do you put a particular emphasis on offensive lineman?
- 14:55Speaker 1: I will, I will look at at offensive lineman, because
- 14:59Speaker 1: if you're looking at one, if there are any other
- 15:02Speaker 1: prospects on that in that you know, offensive line, or
- 15:05Speaker 1: if you're looking at a defensive lineman, there's an offensive
- 15:07Speaker 1: lineman that's a prospect. I mean, it's it's easy for
- 15:10Speaker 1: my eye to go that way. But but this guy,
- 15:13Speaker 1: to me is the Linderbaumb of the second round. I
- 15:16Speaker 1: think he's I think he's a pretty pretty talented kid.
- 15:20Speaker 1: I mean, he's a tight end. He was the number
- 15:23Speaker 1: one recruit who played high school football in Nebraska while
- 15:26Speaker 1: I was going to University of Nebraska. He was the
- 15:29Speaker 1: number one recruit out of high school at Nebraska. He
- 15:32Speaker 1: was the seventh tight end in the country recruited by Nebraska.
- 15:36Speaker 1: But they moved in the center. And here's a guy
- 15:38Speaker 1: that won the state shot put championship three times, won
- 15:42Speaker 1: the discus championship four times, put the shot sixty three
- 15:45Speaker 1: feet six inches through the discus over one hundred ninety
- 15:48Speaker 1: six feet. It's like, dude, this guy's got some some power,
- 15:52Speaker 1: some strength. He's got big, strong hands, you know, as
- 15:55Speaker 1: a result of that. And I know I did that.
- 15:59Speaker 1: I put the shot and through the discus, and I
- 16:01Speaker 1: know that helped me. I know that helped me. I
- 16:03Speaker 1: know it helped me with balance, with body control, with
- 16:06Speaker 1: overall strength, you know, particularly hand strength and stuff. You know,
- 16:09Speaker 1: you've got a twelve pound object in your hand that
- 16:11Speaker 1: you're controlling, and he threw it. He put the shot
- 16:14Speaker 1: in college in the Raska sixteen pound or over fifty
- 16:17Speaker 1: six feet. I think something crazy like that. This guy
- 16:20Speaker 1: has got and he's got thirty three and a half
- 16:23Speaker 1: inch arms, he's got long arms, he's got long arms,
- 16:25Speaker 1: strong hands. I'm thinking, you know, that might not be
- 16:30Speaker 1: that bad as scenario if in fact, you know, he's
- 16:34Speaker 1: a lot of people have him rated second third round
- 16:37Speaker 1: late too early three. I mean, you know, the Bengals obviously,
- 16:41Speaker 1: if they wait till the third round, he still might
- 16:43Speaker 1: be there. I'm not sure they'd take him, you know,
- 16:48Speaker 1: at the late second round. If they wait till the
- 16:50Speaker 1: late third round, he could be gone. And so you know,
- 16:52Speaker 1: it's like, jeez, maybe they'll take him with a late
- 16:54Speaker 1: two or if they trade down in and get an
- 16:57Speaker 1: extra second round pick, like then we'll get an next
- 17:00Speaker 1: second they if they trade back, which I think is
- 17:02Speaker 1: a high high percentage. Since twenty seventeen, they've done it
- 17:06Speaker 1: four out of five drafts. The only draft they didn't
- 17:09Speaker 1: is they drafted a wide receiver that it's pretty good,
- 17:14Speaker 1: you know, this guy can play te Higgins te Higgins
- 17:18Speaker 1: with the thirty third pick in the draft, they stayed
- 17:20Speaker 1: there and took him. I just think that there's a
- 17:24Speaker 1: strong chance that somebody's going to try to come up
- 17:27Speaker 1: and grab one of those quarterbacks late, you know, and say, well,
- 17:32Speaker 1: it could be one taking at thirty two. Got to
- 17:34Speaker 1: get it to the thirty one to get them. Let's
- 17:37Speaker 1: let's move up, let's get the fifth year. We've talked
- 17:39Speaker 1: about this before. I mean, I think there's a there's
- 17:42Speaker 1: a possibility. And you know, the way they're paying cornerbacks,
- 17:47Speaker 1: wide receivers, these guys are making twenty million in in
- 17:51Speaker 1: some cases, you know, maybe maybe you want to have
- 17:54Speaker 1: one of those guys the fifth year. So with the
- 17:57Speaker 1: Bengals at thirty one, and they wouldn't trade back if
- 18:00Speaker 1: they've got somebody identified that I want. I want for
- 18:02Speaker 1: salary cap reasons. I mean, shoot, the way all these
- 18:05Speaker 1: guys are getting paid, what the heck, you might as
- 18:06Speaker 1: well you want that extra year. Although you know, if
- 18:09Speaker 1: you have a great player, you're not going to get
- 18:11Speaker 1: to that fifth year anyway. You're going to start negotiating
- 18:14Speaker 1: with him, you know, after his third year and probably
- 18:16Speaker 1: get an extension done before he even starts his fourth year.
- 18:20Speaker 1: But it's good to at least have that as as
- 18:23Speaker 1: a viable situation for your finances and and pro rating
- 18:27Speaker 1: your bonus over X number of years and be able
- 18:29Speaker 1: to pro rate it and push it out, kick the
- 18:31Speaker 1: ball down there, you know, down the road as far
- 18:34Speaker 1: as you can. So it's it's going to be interesting.
- 18:39Speaker 1: But I think I like Cam Jurgen's I think he's
- 18:43Speaker 1: he's a pretty darn good player at the center position.
- 18:46Speaker 1: He gets to the second level because of his feet,
- 18:49Speaker 1: you know, as a time, he gets to the second
- 18:50Speaker 1: level pretty darn well. All right, I want to get
- 18:52Speaker 1: to Tyler Linderbaum in a second. But since you were
- 18:55Speaker 1: talking about trading back, a lot of people have asked
- 18:57Speaker 1: me about it in recent weeks, and I've said, I
- 18:59Speaker 1: don't think they'll do it. I think there's going to
- 19:01Speaker 1: be somebody on their board much higher than number thirty
- 19:05Speaker 1: one on their board, and they're gonna want to make
- 19:08Speaker 1: that pick and get that guy. But I'll admit that
- 19:11Speaker 1: you've got me thinking that it's more likely than I
- 19:15Speaker 1: have been envisioning for a couple of reasons. One, the
- 19:19Speaker 1: last time they traded out of the first round was
- 19:21Speaker 1: nineteen eighty nine. Coming off the Super Bowl, they moved
- 19:25Speaker 1: back eight spots in a trade with Atlanta. They wound
- 19:27Speaker 1: up taking running back Eric Ball, who still works for
- 19:29Speaker 1: the team, with a second round draft pick and let's
- 19:33Speaker 1: face it, at thirty one, there's gonna be a pool
- 19:37Speaker 1: of guys there that they have kind of been thinking,
- 19:41Speaker 1: all right, these are the guys most likely to be
- 19:44Speaker 1: there at thirty one. And if several of those names
- 19:47Speaker 1: are still available and they can move back a certain
- 19:50Speaker 1: number of spots where they're still assured of getting one
- 19:53Speaker 1: of those guys and pick up an extra third or
- 19:56Speaker 1: fourth round pick, that seems like something they would be
- 20:00Speaker 1: very inclined to do. Yeah, I mean, I think Duke
- 20:03Speaker 1: talked about buckets of players, and I think the buckets
- 20:06Speaker 1: are big because I mean, there's not a consensus on
- 20:11Speaker 1: the first pick of the draft who it's going to be,
- 20:15Speaker 1: never mind the best player at each position. I mean,
- 20:17Speaker 1: there's there's debate and dialogue with all of it. So
- 20:21Speaker 1: that tells me that, you know, you have a bunch
- 20:24Speaker 1: of players that are pretty equal in terms of evaluation.
- 20:29Speaker 1: So it's not like there's a bucket from the first
- 20:32Speaker 1: round to the mid first round, and then another bucket
- 20:36Speaker 1: from mid first round to end the first round, then
- 20:38Speaker 1: another I think the buckets go. It might go from
- 20:41Speaker 1: mid first round to beginning a third round, you know,
- 20:44Speaker 1: and there would be a lot of players in that bucket.
- 20:47Speaker 1: So if you can pick ups. Let's let's say, for example,
- 20:50Speaker 1: the Jets have two first round picks, they're going to
- 20:52Speaker 1: use those. They have two second round picks as well.
- 20:54Speaker 1: I think it's thirty five and thirty eight. Say the
- 20:57Speaker 1: Bengals say the Jet, you know, the Jets call and say,
- 21:01Speaker 1: you know, we want to wed we didn't go quarterback
- 21:05Speaker 1: with those top two top ten picks. We're thinking though
- 21:09Speaker 1: we might, we might, you know, before the end of
- 21:10Speaker 1: the first round. Just take a flyer on one of
- 21:13Speaker 1: those guys. If you go to the formula, the Bengals
- 21:18Speaker 1: will get another They get their fourth round pick, and
- 21:20Speaker 1: they get a fifth as well. In my mind, from
- 21:25Speaker 1: the second round to the fourth round, even mid first
- 21:28Speaker 1: round to the fourth round sweet spot of the draft,
- 21:31Speaker 1: as many picks as you can get in those rounds
- 21:34Speaker 1: get them. And they don't have any extras. They're only
- 21:36Speaker 1: extra pick this year is in the seventh exactly, and
- 21:39Speaker 1: if they can get an extra fifth. I mean, they're
- 21:42Speaker 1: edge rush guys that I think they're different caliber quality
- 21:46Speaker 1: of guys, but there's an edge guy that if you
- 21:49Speaker 1: get the Jets earlier fourth round a fifth round pick,
- 21:52Speaker 1: then yours. At the end of the fifth round, you
- 21:54Speaker 1: have a top ten fifth round pick, you might be
- 21:56Speaker 1: able to get an edge guy doubling down. If you
- 21:59Speaker 1: took one earlier, take another one in the fifth. Um,
- 22:02Speaker 1: you know it's going to allow you to double down
- 22:04Speaker 1: a corner easier. You could take one in the third
- 22:07Speaker 1: in the fourth round if you get an extra fourth
- 22:10Speaker 1: round pick. For example, UM, if you didn't take one
- 22:13Speaker 1: in the first round, cornerback might be one of the
- 22:15Speaker 1: players that they stay at thirty one and say we're
- 22:18Speaker 1: gonna we're gonna take the cornerback that the best cornerback available,
- 22:22Speaker 1: particularly if one slides, it's gonna be very interesting. I
- 22:25Speaker 1: think there's depth at corner. There's depth at edge rush guy. UM.
- 22:30Speaker 1: I could see them evaluating a three technique if one
- 22:33Speaker 1: of those guys from Georgia for some reason slides down
- 22:36Speaker 1: that far, they have to be in that bucket. So
- 22:39Speaker 1: I mean, you got to you gotta figure if Booth
- 22:43Speaker 1: is there and uh, Kira Lee Elam is there, and
- 22:48Speaker 1: George karloftis is there, and Dax Hill is there you know, um,
- 22:53Speaker 1: and then Davante Wyatt is there. That's that's five right
- 22:58Speaker 1: there where you're thinking, I mean I might be able
- 23:02Speaker 1: to do I take one of them, or if somebody
- 23:05Speaker 1: is going to give me a call on our ot
- 23:06Speaker 1: to move back down back that far. And I just
- 23:09Speaker 1: picked the Jets just because they had two. And I'm thinking,
- 23:12Speaker 1: you know, they may decide, Okay, let's let's move up
- 23:15Speaker 1: and use one of our third and our second and
- 23:20Speaker 1: fourth round picks, or our second round picks, move up,
- 23:24Speaker 1: give up a fourth and a fifth because they have
- 23:25Speaker 1: a bounty of draft picks. I just use them as
- 23:28Speaker 1: an example. There are others. It's going to be very interesting.
- 23:31Speaker 1: I think it is. It's going to be a very
- 23:34Speaker 1: very interesting draft. And I think you know, Duke's going
- 23:37Speaker 1: to be buy the phone right up until the last minute,
- 23:39Speaker 1: evaluating calls to come in. Who's offering the best deal?
- 23:44Speaker 1: How far back do I have to go? How many
- 23:46Speaker 1: people do we have in this bucket where I can
- 23:48Speaker 1: I don't want to go back. You know, ten spots.
- 23:51Speaker 1: If I only got four in the bucket, I'm rolling
- 23:53Speaker 1: the dice. Because I heard Bill Polian on Sally's radio
- 23:58Speaker 1: show XM Series Radio NFL Radio and uh and he
- 24:02Speaker 1: said his experiences are if you move back and you
- 24:07Speaker 1: only have two guys that you feel comfortable moving back.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Eighty five percent of the time they're gone. They're gone.
- 24:13Speaker 1: So you know, you do, you do? You do have
- 24:17Speaker 1: to play a sound numbers game, and you have to
- 24:19Speaker 1: have a really good feel for what everybody is going
- 24:22Speaker 1: to be taken or expected to take before you get
- 24:26Speaker 1: that pick. You're moving back to it, that's for sure.
- 24:28Speaker 1: All right, Let's circle back to Tyler Linderbaum because he
- 24:32Speaker 1: has been the most commonly mentioned name in the various
- 24:34Speaker 1: mock drafts, including some of the most prominent draft gurus
- 24:37Speaker 1: out there. How good is Tyler Linderbaum In your opinion?
- 24:41Speaker 1: I think he's a very good football player, you know.
- 24:43Speaker 1: I think he's he's outstanding. Actually, in my opinion, I
- 24:46Speaker 1: think he's uh. He finishes as well as anybody, I
- 24:51Speaker 1: mean finishing blocks his lateral movement. I've seen the guy
- 24:56Speaker 1: be able to reach a three technique. Now you know
- 24:59Speaker 1: the center of the right guard. The three technique is
- 25:01Speaker 1: on the outside shoulder of the right guard, and Tyler
- 25:04Speaker 1: Lindebaum can go latterly nine in the line of scrimmage
- 25:06Speaker 1: to get position to block that guy in the outside
- 25:09Speaker 1: of a guy one removed from him at the line
- 25:12Speaker 1: of scrimmage. So he's he's extraordinary with his footwork and
- 25:17Speaker 1: the thing that I like about him, you know, he
- 25:20Speaker 1: has the short arms. There's no way to get around
- 25:22Speaker 1: that thirty one and a half or whatever it is.
- 25:25Speaker 1: And he's under three hundred pounds, right, and he's two
- 25:29Speaker 1: ninety three or whatever, he is, two ninety six, whatever
- 25:31Speaker 1: the heck he is. But the dude was a state
- 25:34Speaker 1: wrestling champion. So he knows how to operate in the box.
- 25:38Speaker 1: He knows how to operate in tight quarters. He understands leverage,
- 25:42Speaker 1: he understands you know, body mechanics. His pad level is
- 25:46Speaker 1: always low. You know, he's got a lot of traits
- 25:50Speaker 1: that can overcome the short arms, and he's done it.
- 25:54Speaker 1: I mean, he's played at a really high level. He's
- 25:57Speaker 1: captain you know, the football team. He fits, he fits
- 26:00Speaker 1: all those uh, all those kind of things they say,
- 26:03Speaker 1: you know, they say he's a he's a great kid.
- 26:05Speaker 1: I would it sounds like he's one of those guys
- 26:09Speaker 1: that you know, would would just assume, you know, bite
- 26:12Speaker 1: your arm off like a Tim Crumber. I'd love to
- 26:14Speaker 1: see Linderbaum and Tim crumbry in a rookie camp going
- 26:17Speaker 1: against each other. It would be two wrestlers, you know,
- 26:21Speaker 1: that are fierce competitors, fight to the finish. Who's going
- 26:23Speaker 1: to finish whom. I think he's got that cut type
- 26:26Speaker 1: of uh, you know, that type of play to him.
- 26:29Speaker 1: I mean what Pro Football Focus the highest rated center
- 26:32Speaker 1: they've ever had, correct, And I think he's the highest
- 26:34Speaker 1: rated in went the last ten years. I think I
- 26:36Speaker 1: read somewhere by you know, taking all these different uh
- 26:40Speaker 1: scouting department or scouting services that different teams use, he's
- 26:46Speaker 1: the highest rated one. So I mean, the kid can play.
- 26:48Speaker 1: And let's face it, a guy who I really respect
- 26:51Speaker 1: as a football man, Paul Brown. First guy he picked
- 26:55Speaker 1: was a center because he had a very simple explanation.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Two people handle the football every snap, the quarterback in
- 27:02Speaker 1: the center, and I want to have that battery solidified.
- 27:06Speaker 1: I want to have the center and I want to
- 27:08Speaker 1: have a quarterback. So it does make a lot of sense,
- 27:13Speaker 1: and you know, you have to have an intelligent guy.
- 27:16Speaker 1: Lyndon Bonum does a great job with the calls and
- 27:19Speaker 1: identifications and all the things that go on there. And
- 27:24Speaker 1: one of the highest compliments, maybe if not the highest
- 27:27Speaker 1: ever got was when Blair Bush blew his knee out
- 27:31Speaker 1: and missed. Didn't blow it out totally, but missed like
- 27:34Speaker 1: four games. And Bob Johnson had already lost a bunch
- 27:37Speaker 1: of weight in retirement and they were thinking about bringing
- 27:39Speaker 1: them back. They brought him back the snap for field
- 27:42Speaker 1: goals and extra points. They had me play center, and
- 27:44Speaker 1: I'd never played it high school, college or NFL, never
- 27:48Speaker 1: played in a game. I had taken some snaps in
- 27:50Speaker 1: practice try to get ready for it, but I really,
- 27:55Speaker 1: for whatever reason, I meshed. It worked for me at center.
- 27:58Speaker 1: And one of my all time highest football compliments was
- 28:02Speaker 1: Paul Brown coming up to me in the locker room
- 28:04Speaker 1: and saying, congratulations, young man, I think center might be
- 28:08Speaker 1: your best position. You've played outstanding football for us. So
- 28:15Speaker 1: you just you just never know, you know. And that's
- 28:18Speaker 1: why I mean, a guy that's performed like that for
- 28:24Speaker 1: you know, a bunch of snaps, a bunch of games
- 28:27Speaker 1: at IOWA, he's played hurt, he's tough, really good player,
- 28:32Speaker 1: but you know, obviously the knock that you can have
- 28:36Speaker 1: on him or two things short arms and no position versatility.
- 28:39Speaker 1: Those are the two things that people are gonna you know,
- 28:42Speaker 1: harp on. I guess The last time the Bengals drafted
- 28:46Speaker 1: an offensive lineman who became a Pro bowler was with
- 28:49Speaker 1: Andrew Wittworth in two thousand and six. Now, Andre Smith
- 28:52Speaker 1: had a long NFL career, certainly wouldn't call him a bust.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Jonah Williams is certainly doing well. You know, he's a
- 29:00Speaker 1: solid starter. Hopefully he can blossom still into a pro bowler.
- 29:03Speaker 1: But there have been some notable misses. Obviously Cedric Albwahi,
- 29:07Speaker 1: Billy probably Spoth first round draft picks who didn't pan out.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Any theories to why it's been so long since the
- 29:13Speaker 1: Bengals drafted an offensive lineman who lived up to uh,
- 29:17Speaker 1: you know that status and became a pro bowler, Yeah,
- 29:20Speaker 1: it's it is. It is a crapshoot. I mean, I
- 29:22Speaker 1: think if you look at you look at all the
- 29:25Speaker 1: offensive lineman over those same years they were drafted in
- 29:28Speaker 1: the first round and the number of them they panned
- 29:31Speaker 1: out to be, you know, Pro Bowl type players, it's
- 29:33Speaker 1: just such an inexact science, you know. I mean, it's
- 29:36Speaker 1: it's uh, there's there's all kinds of elements, all kinds
- 29:40Speaker 1: of factors involved. Um, sometimes a guy, a guy has
- 29:48Speaker 1: better coaching in college than he had in the NFL.
- 29:51Speaker 1: I'm not saying that's the case with what's happened with
- 29:53Speaker 1: the Cincinnati Bengals, but for whatever reason, the guy responded
- 29:56Speaker 1: to coaching and techniques or whatever in the college level.
- 29:59Speaker 1: You got to the National Football League and he didn't.
- 30:02Speaker 1: You know, sometimes it's just a matter of a guy
- 30:05Speaker 1: not being able to able to adjust to the next
- 30:07Speaker 1: level of competition. And it's it's funny how if you've
- 30:13Speaker 1: your whole life, you've been able to win, you know, battles,
- 30:18Speaker 1: individual battles, win a lot of games, and win your matchup.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Then all of a sudden you get to a situation where, well,
- 30:25Speaker 1: that's I think Jackson Carmen's going through that a little bit.
- 30:28Speaker 1: I think in high school and college he was a
- 30:31Speaker 1: man amongst boys. Now he's a man amongst other men,
- 30:33Speaker 1: and there's a little adjustment there. So you know, hopefully
- 30:37Speaker 1: that he's he's learned that he's experienced it for a
- 30:40Speaker 1: whole year and now he's you know, learned the techniques
- 30:42Speaker 1: for a whole year. And a lot of guys make
- 30:44Speaker 1: that adjustment and from year one to year two, it's like, wow,
- 30:48Speaker 1: it's a totally different guy, and if they don't, it's like,
- 30:52Speaker 1: how's their career going to pan out? So, yeah, there's
- 30:55Speaker 1: so many variables to it and so many factors involved. Um,
- 30:59Speaker 1: it's never it's never just one thing, you know, for
- 31:03Speaker 1: for every guy, it's not. It's not just oh he
- 31:06Speaker 1: didn't he'd lacked this, or he'd lacked that. It's it's
- 31:09Speaker 1: weird how it's there's a lot of pieces and if, uh,
- 31:13Speaker 1: if all the stars don't align, sometimes it can be
- 31:16Speaker 1: it can be a disaster or a mess. That's why
- 31:18Speaker 1: it's it's such an inexact science. I mean, man, it's
- 31:22Speaker 1: there's there's absolutely there's very little science to it. I think,
- 31:26Speaker 1: you know, it's a there's there's a lot of environmental things.
- 31:30Speaker 1: There's a lot of things that go into it, that's
- 31:31Speaker 1: for sure. So most of the mock draft that don't
- 31:35Speaker 1: have the Bengals selecting lender Bomb have them taking a cornerback.
- 31:38Speaker 1: From two thousand and six to two thousand and sixteen,
- 31:41Speaker 1: they took a cornerback in the first round five times
- 31:43Speaker 1: in ten drafts. How likely is it, in your opinion
- 31:47Speaker 1: that the thirty first pick in the draft is a cornerback.
- 31:50Speaker 1: I think it's very likely. You know, I think that, Um,
- 31:53Speaker 1: you know, if if you look at it the way,
- 31:57Speaker 1: the if, the if, the Bengals are attack one side
- 32:00Speaker 1: of the football and free agency, they normally attack the
- 32:03Speaker 1: other side in the draft. So you know, like the
- 32:07Speaker 1: last last two drafts were offensive orientation because the defense
- 32:13Speaker 1: was addressed so heavily in free agency. Offense was dressed
- 32:16Speaker 1: addressed heavily in free agency. Hayden Hurst the three linemen, Um,
- 32:21Speaker 1: you know that's that's that's a big, big expenditure and
- 32:25Speaker 1: a big, big focus on improving upfront for the Cincinnati
- 32:28Speaker 1: Bengals offense. YEA, if I'm if I'm a defensive coach,
- 32:32Speaker 1: I'm thinking two out of our first three picks should
- 32:35Speaker 1: be on the defensive side of the football. Um, you know,
- 32:39Speaker 1: maybe even all three of them. You might be thinking.
- 32:42Speaker 1: If you're a defensive coach, I think that it makes
- 32:45Speaker 1: sense that that the cornerback position would be Like Duke
- 32:49Speaker 1: Tobin said, you know, you don't have to be basically
- 32:52Speaker 1: I'm paraphrasing or you know, interpreting, Um, you don't have
- 32:56Speaker 1: to be a football Einstein to realize they need cornerback help.
- 32:59Speaker 1: So I mean, if a guy like Andrew Booth is there.
- 33:03Speaker 1: I don't see how they how they don't do it potentially,
- 33:07Speaker 1: Kayer Elam, Um, you know, it's it's very interesting. I
- 33:12Speaker 1: think I think if they if they trade down, though,
- 33:16Speaker 1: I still think they can get a good corner um
- 33:19Speaker 1: and if they can still get a decent corner and
- 33:23Speaker 1: pick up an extra fourth round pick in the top
- 33:27Speaker 1: ten of the fourth round, make that deal. If that
- 33:30Speaker 1: deals there would be made. So you mentioned Andrew Booth
- 33:35Speaker 1: and Kayre Elam. Booth is from Clemson, Kayrie Elam is
- 33:38Speaker 1: from Florida. A couple of the other names that come
- 33:42Speaker 1: up are Kyler Gordon from Washington, Roger McCreery from Auburn.
- 33:45Speaker 1: And everybody seems to think that Sas Gardner, Derek Stingley,
- 33:48Speaker 1: and Trent McDuffie will be gone. So let's say Elam
- 33:53Speaker 1: and Booth are gone, Gordon and McCrary are still there.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Is that the scenario where you say, at that point
- 34:00Speaker 1: trade down you'll still probably be able to get one
- 34:02Speaker 1: of those guys. Yep, yeah, I think I think if
- 34:04Speaker 1: you trade down to still top of the second round,
- 34:08Speaker 1: I think you can still get get those guys. I
- 34:11Speaker 1: think they're mid two guys. You know, I mean, I'm
- 34:13Speaker 1: not saying you wait to they're gone by mid two,
- 34:17Speaker 1: but I think they're I think they're you know, second
- 34:19Speaker 1: round more second round kind of guys. Uh. And then
- 34:23Speaker 1: you know, I mean a guy that this is further
- 34:27Speaker 1: down the road and you saw this guy and you know,
- 34:30Speaker 1: I'm thinking five eight, one hundred and seventy four pounds
- 34:32Speaker 1: Marcus Jones from Houston though. That dude is physical man.
- 34:35Speaker 1: He plays and he's got nine returns for touchdowns, six
- 34:39Speaker 1: kickof returns, three partner turns. I'm looking at that and say,
- 34:42Speaker 1: I mean you get get a little double dip award.
- 34:44Speaker 1: I mean, he won the Paul Horning Award most Versatile
- 34:49Speaker 1: College football Player. Position versatility Mike Hilton, you know, gives
- 34:54Speaker 1: you that this this guy could be like a backup
- 34:57Speaker 1: to what Mike Hilton can can provide for you a
- 35:00Speaker 1: little bit um and then you know we're not even
- 35:04Speaker 1: talking about three techniques. I mean, if if like I said,
- 35:07Speaker 1: if if DeVante Wyatt is there, I mean you got
- 35:10Speaker 1: to you gotta think about that bad boy. And then
- 35:12Speaker 1: and then later on, if you trade down into the
- 35:15Speaker 1: second round, a guy like Perry and Winfrey out of Oklahoma, big,
- 35:20Speaker 1: big body, long arms. Man, he's like he's a little stiff.
- 35:24Speaker 1: His lower body's pretty stiff. But man telling you, man,
- 35:27Speaker 1: when you've got a guy Mike, I hated guys that
- 35:32Speaker 1: could lock out those big arms and it was like
- 35:34Speaker 1: you were blocked in an octopus and you could never
- 35:36Speaker 1: get to their body, you know. And this guy has
- 35:40Speaker 1: that type of look when I you know, you watch
- 35:42Speaker 1: him on tape, it's like, dude, this this guy is
- 35:44Speaker 1: a is a big old beast. I mean, I don't know.
- 35:47Speaker 1: You start thinking about Trey McBride in the second round
- 35:50Speaker 1: at tight end, not a first round. I wouldn't go
- 35:52Speaker 1: thirty one, but if you trade back, you go with
- 35:56Speaker 1: the best tight end, and a lot of people's mind
- 35:59Speaker 1: Tray McBride as a tight end potentially. I mean, there's
- 36:03Speaker 1: there's places they can go for sure, and I've got
- 36:09Speaker 1: you know, well, edge rushers, yea. People. Edge rushers are
- 36:14Speaker 1: so important because the best way you can improve your secondary,
- 36:18Speaker 1: The quickest way you can improve your secondary is get
- 36:21Speaker 1: a better pass rush and make them have to cover
- 36:24Speaker 1: for less time. That's the bottom line. Because it's in
- 36:27Speaker 1: this league now, the way teams use personnel groupings, formations,
- 36:34Speaker 1: sophistication of all that personnel and the way they'll switch chains,
- 36:37Speaker 1: temple on you. Sometimes you can't roll guys in there,
- 36:41Speaker 1: but when you can roll guys in there, you've got
- 36:43Speaker 1: to because in the NFL, in the fourth quarter of
- 36:46Speaker 1: some games it looks like seven on seven, the pass
- 36:48Speaker 1: rush is gassed, and it's like they don't have offensive
- 36:51Speaker 1: and defensive linement. It's just you know, you get linebackers
- 36:53Speaker 1: and secondary people covering backs and tight ends and receivers,
- 36:57Speaker 1: and they they can't. It's impossible well to cover that long.
- 37:01Speaker 1: So if you can have you know, literally too deep,
- 37:06Speaker 1: but every rush position you have and roll guys in there,
- 37:10Speaker 1: you can never have. Not only used to be you
- 37:12Speaker 1: can never have enough good cover guys, you can never
- 37:14Speaker 1: have enough good coiner. Now you can never have enough
- 37:16Speaker 1: good cover guys, and you can never have enough good rushers.
- 37:19Speaker 1: So Bengals addressed that edge, edge pass, edge pass rush.
- 37:25Speaker 1: If the best guy available if you do trade down
- 37:28Speaker 1: is an edge guy, or the best guy available at
- 37:30Speaker 1: thirty one is an edge guy. If Karloftus is there
- 37:33Speaker 1: at thirty one, I'd take him. I'd take him. He's
- 37:37Speaker 1: a bigger version of the H Boys. You know, the energy,
- 37:41Speaker 1: the enthusiasm, the doggedly determined, you know, never quit and
- 37:45Speaker 1: a play my motor never stops running. That's what this
- 37:48Speaker 1: guy is and he's a bigger version of it. Would
- 37:52Speaker 1: be special. K meets H Boys with Karloftus. Is safety
- 37:58Speaker 1: in play at thirty one? Specifically if Taxton Hill from
- 38:01Speaker 1: Michigan or Lewis Scene from Georgia is there, well that
- 38:04Speaker 1: that would be interesting because I do think those type
- 38:08Speaker 1: of safeties are are what Louiana Rumo is looking for
- 38:11Speaker 1: because they can play slot as well. I mean, they
- 38:13Speaker 1: both have extreme position versatility, seeing will not your teeth loose,
- 38:18Speaker 1: There's no doubt about it. Um and Hill is he's gifted.
- 38:22Speaker 1: He's a talented kid. If they take one of those
- 38:25Speaker 1: guys in the first round, is the handwriting on the
- 38:27Speaker 1: wall that Jesse Bates will not get an extension before
- 38:30Speaker 1: July thirty first, that's a you know, you'd have to wonder.
- 38:35Speaker 1: You'd have to wonder about that, UM, and that would
- 38:37Speaker 1: that might be a factor in whether you go there
- 38:40Speaker 1: or not. UM And you might say, okay, well, these
- 38:43Speaker 1: guys obviously they're worthy of the they're in the bucket
- 38:46Speaker 1: for the thirty first pick, but we have other guys
- 38:49Speaker 1: in the bucket too, Uh, do we have a bigger
- 38:51Speaker 1: need than safety? Well, the big variable is not if
- 38:56Speaker 1: we signed Jesse Bates, but if we don't signed Jesse Bates,
- 38:59Speaker 1: we have a huge need. So that that one's very
- 39:02Speaker 1: very interesting if a pick like that is made. But
- 39:06Speaker 1: if you trade back and one of those guys is there,
- 39:10Speaker 1: if your board said that, you know, Hill and Scene
- 39:15Speaker 1: are much better than what's there. Trading back into the forties,
- 39:19Speaker 1: I mean into the higher thirties, you're gonna pull the trigger.
- 39:22Speaker 1: You know, there's no doubt. How about guard Zion Johnson
- 39:28Speaker 1: Kenyon Green. Those are two names that have kind of
- 39:31Speaker 1: mentioned in that twenty to thirty pick in the draft range.
- 39:36Speaker 1: Should the Bengals pull the trigger on one of those
- 39:37Speaker 1: guys if they're there, Well, the thing is, you know
- 39:40Speaker 1: a lot of marks that you look at they're not there,
- 39:43Speaker 1: you know. So if they're there, I mean they're gonna
- 39:45Speaker 1: be in the bucket. They gotta be gonna be guys
- 39:48Speaker 1: that that you have to think about because they're they're
- 39:51Speaker 1: very very proficient. I mean they're both. It's interesting though
- 39:55Speaker 1: a lot of these a lot of these linemen and uh,
- 39:58Speaker 1: you know, I'm gonna put m Raymond, the big kid
- 40:02Speaker 1: from Central Michigan, Bernard Raymond from Norway, Denmark wherever he's from.
- 40:08Speaker 1: He was a tight end initially and he's moved into tackle.
- 40:11Speaker 1: He's another one. A lot of these guys over extend,
- 40:15Speaker 1: you know, they they lean, they almost dive sometimes. Like
- 40:20Speaker 1: for ast athletic as some of these guys are, they're
- 40:22Speaker 1: on the ground a lot, you know, But a guy
- 40:24Speaker 1: like Frank Pollack could correct that very quickly. I think
- 40:27Speaker 1: that's a very very fixable, uh technique to be taught, mechanics,
- 40:31Speaker 1: to be taught whatever. Yeah, I mean, those guys are
- 40:35Speaker 1: in the bucket. But in my mind, you you have
- 40:39Speaker 1: your bucket and then you have your need bucket. So
- 40:43Speaker 1: you have like you've got the bucket of players on
- 40:45Speaker 1: your big board, and then you have your needs. And
- 40:49Speaker 1: after what you did in free agency, you get in
- 40:50Speaker 1: a couple of actually three interior well three two interior
- 40:55Speaker 1: and one on the edge offensive lineman. Both have position
- 41:00Speaker 1: versatility and in terms of one can play both guards.
- 41:04Speaker 1: You know, he can kapit, can play right or left.
- 41:07Speaker 1: He's a predominantly a right guard, and you got h
- 41:10Speaker 1: you know, a guy that can play center and left
- 41:15Speaker 1: guard and right guard. He's played, he's played all for
- 41:17Speaker 1: the New England Patriots and and Miami Dolphins, Ted Carress.
- 41:21Speaker 1: I mean, you've got some versatility there. I just I
- 41:23Speaker 1: just think if if the Bengals took a guard at
- 41:27Speaker 1: thirty one, I think the defensive coaches that have mutiny
- 41:32Speaker 1: to only happened once in team history, with Kevin Zeitler said,
- 41:35Speaker 1: we know the history and not taking guards in the
- 41:37Speaker 1: first round, right right, And if they you know, if
- 41:40Speaker 1: they moved back, it would have to be you know,
- 41:43Speaker 1: there's there's a very very slim chance. I think they
- 41:47Speaker 1: go that route until later in the draft, and there's
- 41:49Speaker 1: good ones to get later in the draft. Bernard Raymond,
- 41:52Speaker 1: by the way, is from Austria. The offensive lineman who
- 41:55Speaker 1: played at Central Michigan. His offensive line coach is now
- 41:58Speaker 1: the offensive line coaching use interesting hire for Luke Fickel
- 42:02Speaker 1: and the Bearcats. So you've touched down this who is
- 42:07Speaker 1: the guy that if he's there unexpectedly, the Bengals jump
- 42:13Speaker 1: for joy in the draft room and rush to the
- 42:16Speaker 1: podium to make that pick. For me, it's Karloftus. I mean,
- 42:21Speaker 1: if he's there, I've seen him. But again with him,
- 42:24Speaker 1: I've seen him at fifteen, I've seen him at the
- 42:26Speaker 1: end of the first round. I've seen him not draft
- 42:28Speaker 1: in the first round. I mean, there's no there are
- 42:31Speaker 1: such diverse opinions on a lot of these a lot
- 42:34Speaker 1: of these top prospects. I mean, he's basically in a
- 42:38Speaker 1: lot of people's estimation the fifth edge rush guy. You know,
- 42:43Speaker 1: they've they've got others rated ahead of him, And I
- 42:46Speaker 1: can understand from an athletics standpoint, but he is athletic.
- 42:51Speaker 1: He's not a freaky athlete like some of these edge
- 42:53Speaker 1: guys are, but he is. He's very well put together,
- 42:59Speaker 1: very much, very muscular, very muscular, and his lower body
- 43:04Speaker 1: and legs. Uh, he's he's he's a tough kid. His
- 43:09Speaker 1: thing the thing that you look and he'll he caused
- 43:13Speaker 1: a lot of pressures, didn't finish as many sacks age
- 43:16Speaker 1: you'd hope, didn't convert to sacks, So he didn't finish
- 43:19Speaker 1: him uh at the level that a lot of the
- 43:21Speaker 1: other guys did. Maybe because of that's a little bit
- 43:24Speaker 1: of the athleticism. But man, I'll say, this guy just
- 43:27Speaker 1: plays so damn hard. You know. I just every single
- 43:30Speaker 1: every single play that you watch him and say, oh
- 43:32Speaker 1: my gosh, man, he's emptying the old effort bucket. And
- 43:36Speaker 1: that's a guy that I think would would help on
- 43:39Speaker 1: the edge. And he's got some position versatility to him too.
- 43:43Speaker 1: You can kick him inside. They kick Sam Hubbard inside.
- 43:46Speaker 1: He's a bigger, bigger guy physically than than than Sam is.
- 43:49Speaker 1: So that that's one that uh, that's one that I
- 43:53Speaker 1: think about running to the up to the table with,
- 43:56Speaker 1: that's for sure. And maybe DeVante Wyatt right behind that,
- 43:59Speaker 1: the interior defensive lineman from Georgia thus three technique in
- 44:02Speaker 1: the draft. Yeah, I mean, he's he's a freak of zoid.
- 44:06Speaker 1: I think I think, you know, potentially both of the
- 44:09Speaker 1: interior defensive linemen for Georgia could be gone too much's defense.
- 44:13Speaker 1: I mean, they're all first round draft picks. It's unbelievable
- 44:17Speaker 1: scene when you're just an incredible hitter and just they'll
- 44:20Speaker 1: loosen every twoth year of in your mouth. He's incredible.
- 44:23Speaker 1: All right, We're gonna get to ask lap questions that
- 44:26Speaker 1: came in on Twitter momentarily. But first, this is always
- 44:29Speaker 1: one of the most downloaded podcasts of the year. Because
- 44:33Speaker 1: of your history in predicting who the Bengals select in
- 44:36Speaker 1: the first round, it's going to be tougher this year
- 44:37Speaker 1: at number thirty one. But you had Kevin Zeitler when
- 44:42Speaker 1: everybody else was saying David de Castro. You had Tyler
- 44:45Speaker 1: Eiffert when people were predicting that the Bengals were going
- 44:48Speaker 1: to take a safety that year. You had John Ross
- 44:50Speaker 1: a few years ago where defensive line was the most
- 44:53Speaker 1: common prediction. So here we go, with the thirty first
- 44:57Speaker 1: pick in the twenty twenty two nf WELL Draft, the
- 45:01Speaker 1: Cincinnati Bengals select, I think they they there's a trade.
- 45:07Speaker 1: The commissioner takes an envelope and there's a trade, and
- 45:12Speaker 1: I do think there's a very very strong chance that
- 45:15Speaker 1: they consummate a trade and uh, you know, and trade
- 45:19Speaker 1: back with the with the pick. Duke's done it, you
- 45:21Speaker 1: know many times with this number pick thirties to forties,
- 45:25Speaker 1: kind of kind of scenario, And it would not surprise
- 45:29Speaker 1: me because I do think that, like we talked about,
- 45:32Speaker 1: the bucket will be big. The buckets going to be
- 45:35Speaker 1: good sized. Um, and if you can pick up an
- 45:38Speaker 1: extra fourth and fifth round pick from moving back six spots.
- 45:43Speaker 1: I think, I think you do that in a heartbeat.
- 45:45Speaker 1: But if if not, I mean, I don't know what
- 45:50Speaker 1: it's so hard to think what corner might be there.
- 45:52Speaker 1: I'd probably lean toward the corner position. I mean, like
- 45:56Speaker 1: I said, if karloftis is there, obviously that's a that's
- 45:59Speaker 1: a that's a big, a big no brainer. But my
- 46:05Speaker 1: first would be Andrew Booth if he's there, and then
- 46:09Speaker 1: Kay Kayer Elam if he If Andrew Booth's not, I mean,
- 46:12Speaker 1: if they're both gone, I don't know. I don't know what.
- 46:15Speaker 1: I don't know what i'd do at that point. I
- 46:18Speaker 1: you know, I'm not sure i'd stay with the with
- 46:21Speaker 1: the corner position at that point in time, I think
- 46:23Speaker 1: I might move on. So Kyler Gordon from Washington doesn't
- 46:27Speaker 1: do it for you at number thirty one, I don't
- 46:29Speaker 1: think i'd go there at thirty one. He'd be a
- 46:31Speaker 1: huge candidate moving back though, um, but I think he's
- 46:35Speaker 1: he's a you know the thing the thing about about Booth,
- 46:40Speaker 1: let me make sure I'm not speaking with forked tongue. Here.
- 46:44Speaker 1: One penalty in three years, one penalty. So here's a
- 46:49Speaker 1: guy that understands hand placement, understands technique, isn't sloppy, you know,
- 46:54Speaker 1: with with with those type of situations. Um, you know,
- 46:59Speaker 1: to compare that Kai Elam seven penalties in ten games
- 47:06Speaker 1: last year, four defensive holdings, two pass interference, sloppy hand.
- 47:10Speaker 1: You know. That's so that's why you know a guy
- 47:13Speaker 1: like Booth has been coached at a really high level
- 47:15Speaker 1: obviously at Clemson. Not not that you know Elam's not,
- 47:20Speaker 1: but he You don't want to give things away. You
- 47:23Speaker 1: don't want to give plays away by penalty, by mistake.
- 47:27Speaker 1: And and you know Booth, Booth has done a phenomenal job,
- 47:30Speaker 1: you know in that regard, and um, he hasn't been
- 47:34Speaker 1: he hasn't been beaten. You know, I'm trying to think
- 47:37Speaker 1: of how many touchdown passes he gave up over none
- 47:40Speaker 1: last year, none last year over his career. It was
- 47:43Speaker 1: zero last year. And he's he's he's obviously he was
- 47:48Speaker 1: a five star coming out of high school. I mean,
- 47:51Speaker 1: he's very fluid when you watch him, and he's got
- 47:54Speaker 1: very quick feet, but they're totally under control at all times.
- 47:56Speaker 1: I mean, he's he's really uh, he's got that slump
- 48:00Speaker 1: ball skills. He tracks the football exception. Well, a lot
- 48:03Speaker 1: of these guys were high school receivers, you know, so
- 48:06Speaker 1: or played both ways, so they just have excellent ball skills.
- 48:10Speaker 1: Can track tract the football, can trace routes, you know.
- 48:13Speaker 1: I mean, they're it's it's a it's a pretty it's
- 48:16Speaker 1: a pretty deep class at the corner position. So our
- 48:20Speaker 1: thoughts are pretty similar. Here's what I'll say for my prediction,
- 48:23Speaker 1: Booth if he's there, followed by Elam if he's there,
- 48:29Speaker 1: followed by Linderbaum if he's there, and then the fourth
- 48:33Speaker 1: choice if they don't trade down, would be Gordon. So
- 48:36Speaker 1: that's my prediction. Booth if available, Elam, next, Lender, Bamb third,
- 48:41Speaker 1: Gordon fourth. Yeah, I mean that that that all that
- 48:44Speaker 1: all makes uh, you know, makes sense. The only I guess,
- 48:47Speaker 1: the only thing if if for whatever reason, a run
- 48:52Speaker 1: is not made on edge rush guys that that you
- 48:55Speaker 1: anticipate to be there. Heck, you've seen more than one
- 48:58Speaker 1: mock draft where edge guys are the first three you
- 49:00Speaker 1: guys taken in the draft. You know. And and how
- 49:03Speaker 1: about if if if if a quarterback, running back or
- 49:09Speaker 1: receiver is not taken in the top ten picks. You know,
- 49:12Speaker 1: some people are saying that's going to be the case
- 49:14Speaker 1: the receiver group. Though, I can see a quarterback definitely
- 49:17Speaker 1: not being taken in the top ten. I can definitely
- 49:19Speaker 1: see a running running back I might not go in
- 49:21Speaker 1: the first round again, but a receiver to not go
- 49:24Speaker 1: in the top ten. This group of receivers, I don't
- 49:27Speaker 1: I don't think I necessarily see that, but it just
- 49:29Speaker 1: goes to show you that people are anticipating and expecting,
- 49:33Speaker 1: you know, a run on these important defensive positions, these
- 49:36Speaker 1: edge guys, these corners and um and in these safeties
- 49:40Speaker 1: that have position versatility that can kick inside and play
- 49:43Speaker 1: some nickel. Loui and Rumo loves that that that aspect
- 49:47Speaker 1: of at that concept. And the offensive tackles will go
- 49:49Speaker 1: high too. Yeah, the tackles go high. The ones that
- 49:52Speaker 1: are you know, our premier, they're they're definitely going to
- 49:56Speaker 1: go high there. They'll be out of the out of
- 49:58Speaker 1: the mix quickly. All right. I shine the ask lap
- 50:02Speaker 1: bad signal into the Cincinnati sky. We got a bunch
- 50:05Speaker 1: of questions submitted via Twitter. Are you ready? Here we go?
- 50:09Speaker 1: First question comes from Mark How much of a problem
- 50:14Speaker 1: is short arm length for an NFL center? Again? You know,
- 50:22Speaker 1: It all depends if a guy has been drafted into
- 50:25Speaker 1: the National Football League and he's got short arms. He's
- 50:28Speaker 1: had short arms his whole life. They didn't shorten when
- 50:31Speaker 1: he got when he got to the NFL draft, and
- 50:34Speaker 1: for him to be drafted into the NFL. He's overcome
- 50:38Speaker 1: it at the high school and collegiate level. And that's
- 50:41Speaker 1: what Linderbaum has been able to do with his unbelievable
- 50:46Speaker 1: lateral mobility and his quick feet. Um, you know, if
- 50:51Speaker 1: you can if you can square up on a guy
- 50:53Speaker 1: and you don't have to reach, short arms on as
- 50:56Speaker 1: big an issue if you're a step behind and you
- 50:59Speaker 1: have to start. That's where long arms can compensate for,
- 51:02Speaker 1: you know, a lack of excellent feet. If you've got
- 51:06Speaker 1: a guy that's got it all at tremendous feet and
- 51:08Speaker 1: got you know, good length to his arms, you got
- 51:10Speaker 1: you got a hell of a prospect. But if you've
- 51:13Speaker 1: got one that is deficient in one area, usually he's
- 51:17Speaker 1: made up for it by being able to compensate with
- 51:21Speaker 1: excellence in another. So it's it's a factor. I mean,
- 51:25Speaker 1: it's uh, it's it's it's a little bit of an issue.
- 51:28Speaker 1: As long as he doesn't The one thing that Billy
- 51:32Speaker 1: Price did to compensate for his short arms was lean,
- 51:36Speaker 1: trying to lengthen his arms by leaning. You can't, you can't,
- 51:39Speaker 1: You can't. And Linderbaum is such an excellent wrestler. He
- 51:44Speaker 1: welcomes being in a phone booth, he welcomes that close contact.
- 51:48Speaker 1: He's he knows how to deal with it. He knows
- 51:51Speaker 1: how to handle it. Now he faced good talent in
- 51:54Speaker 1: the Big Ten eight like it is in the National
- 51:58Speaker 1: Football League. It's another another cut above and that's where
- 52:01Speaker 1: you know you wonder if they get up into his
- 52:05Speaker 1: face like that, can he handle it like he did
- 52:07Speaker 1: at the high school or collegiate level. Our next question
- 52:11Speaker 1: comes from Rob. Do you think that last year's experience
- 52:14Speaker 1: of having to rely on offensive line backups at a
- 52:17Speaker 1: crucial stage of the season makes it likely that the
- 52:21Speaker 1: Bengals will take the best offensive linement available at thirty one,
- 52:25Speaker 1: even if he is not seen as an immediate starter. No.
- 52:29Speaker 1: I think I think that the way they're thinking that
- 52:34Speaker 1: with the second, fourth and sixth round picks last year's
- 52:37Speaker 1: draft that they had to use and Prince that had
- 52:40Speaker 1: been you know, they picked up earlier, he had to play.
- 52:44Speaker 1: I think they feel like those guys are going to
- 52:49Speaker 1: be advanced this year after having a year of coaching,
- 52:52Speaker 1: a year of understanding what it takes to play in
- 52:54Speaker 1: the National Football League. In some cases a year of
- 52:58Speaker 1: quite a few staffs and Prince his case obviously, and
- 53:01Speaker 1: the others maybe not quite as many. Obviously, Jackson Carmen
- 53:06Speaker 1: did not play as many snaps as they may have
- 53:08Speaker 1: projected him to play. Trey Hill had had mixed results.
- 53:15Speaker 1: DeAndre Smith got hurt and that that affected his performance.
- 53:19Speaker 1: I think he has a future, I really, I think
- 53:22Speaker 1: he's going to be a really a pretty good one.
- 53:24Speaker 1: So I think that they feel like with a from
- 53:27Speaker 1: year one to year two is a big development year
- 53:31Speaker 1: for the offensive line. It's the same line coach, same techniques,
- 53:35Speaker 1: same things asked of you. I think that they're thinking
- 53:39Speaker 1: that that group is going to be a lot better
- 53:41Speaker 1: this year than they were last year. The next question
- 53:44Speaker 1: comes from Bengals John, and you may have just answered it.
- 53:47Speaker 1: Why does it feel like guard or center is off
- 53:49Speaker 1: the board in round one when it would help replace
- 53:52Speaker 1: the weakest starter on the team. And I think Bengals
- 53:55Speaker 1: John is implying that left guard right now looks like
- 53:58Speaker 1: the weakest starting spot on the team. Yeah, and uh,
- 54:01Speaker 1: and we'll have to we'll have to see. And um,
- 54:06Speaker 1: just because a guy isn't picked a thirty one doesn't
- 54:09Speaker 1: mean that he's not a good player when they do
- 54:12Speaker 1: address the offensive line, because the offensive line will be addressed.
- 54:15Speaker 1: I mean, you know, in this draft, I wouldn't be
- 54:20Speaker 1: upset if you go two corners, a defensive tackle, edge rushier,
- 54:25Speaker 1: wide receiver, a couple of offensive linemen. That wouldn't bother
- 54:29Speaker 1: me at all, you know, I mean, um, it's to me.
- 54:37Speaker 1: You've got eight picks, you're gonna you're gonna be drafting
- 54:40Speaker 1: a lot of players. There are gonna be good players.
- 54:42Speaker 1: They're gonna be drafted in the fourth round on that Uh,
- 54:45Speaker 1: you know, they could have an impact on the football team,
- 54:48Speaker 1: there's no question about it. Not necessarily in twenty twenty two,
- 54:53Speaker 1: but draft, develop, retain has been the model. Retain is
- 55:00Speaker 1: the tough part now, the way these salaries are going crazy,
- 55:04Speaker 1: the way everybody's being paid so much. But drafting and
- 55:07Speaker 1: developing guys has always been a big part of what
- 55:10Speaker 1: this franchise is about. And it's not just first round
- 55:14Speaker 1: draft picks. It's every draft pick. From Governor chief. Who
- 55:18Speaker 1: are the top three players you don't want the Steelers
- 55:23Speaker 1: and Ravens to take in Round one? I'll say it
- 55:27Speaker 1: doesn't have to be three players. But are there guys
- 55:29Speaker 1: that you do not want to see wind up in
- 55:32Speaker 1: Pittsburgh and Baltimore in this draft? Yeah? I mean, I
- 55:35Speaker 1: don't want to see any of the real talented edge
- 55:37Speaker 1: guys that are going to go real early in the
- 55:41Speaker 1: draft potentially you know, slide and end up in Baltimore
- 55:46Speaker 1: of Pittsburgh. I don't want to see Karl Loftus in
- 55:50Speaker 1: Baltimore of Pittsburgh. I think he's I don't know, maybe
- 55:54Speaker 1: I'm over reacting to him, but I think he's going
- 55:56Speaker 1: to have a very very good, very good, solid FL career. Yeah,
- 56:02Speaker 1: i'd say. I'd say in terms of Baltimore in Pittsburgh,
- 56:07Speaker 1: they always seem to find defensive players, not necessarily first
- 56:13Speaker 1: round picks, but defensive players that fit their scheme, in
- 56:16Speaker 1: their system, and their coaching styles perfectly. There's a guy,
- 56:22Speaker 1: there's a guy from Kentucky just down the road here,
- 56:26Speaker 1: three time captain at Kentucky. As I was looking through
- 56:29Speaker 1: the defensive lineman at three time captain, first time in
- 56:35Speaker 1: school history at cancer on his foot, melanoma on his
- 56:39Speaker 1: foot and over, he's overcome it. The dude is he's athletic.
- 56:43Speaker 1: You know, he's not a freak. He's a sculpted you know,
- 56:47Speaker 1: sculpted kid. Six two and a half two sixty five,
- 56:49Speaker 1: two seventy's a little bit tight in his lower body
- 56:54Speaker 1: though watching them. But Josh Pascal is his name. I mean,
- 56:59Speaker 1: a guy like that in the fourth round, if the
- 57:01Speaker 1: Bengals get another fourth round pick, I wouldn't be upset
- 57:04Speaker 1: about that at all. Third or fourth round guy Alex Wright,
- 57:07Speaker 1: another edge guy. This guy's get tremendous position versatility. Here's
- 57:12Speaker 1: the thing about him that intrigues me. Six five two
- 57:16Speaker 1: seventy thirty five, thirty four inch arms, eighty three inch wingspan.
- 57:22Speaker 1: He's got a massive tackle radius in terms of arm,
- 57:26Speaker 1: long arms, And like I said, sometimes guys like that,
- 57:30Speaker 1: it's it's like trying to block an octopus. He's got
- 57:33Speaker 1: position versatility. He can he can bend, he's very flexible,
- 57:37Speaker 1: a very long limb. He's a project. He's a little
- 57:39Speaker 1: bit raw. But guys like that, I mean, if they're
- 57:42Speaker 1: there in the you know, fourth round, if the Bengals
- 57:46Speaker 1: get an extra fourth round pick, and early in the
- 57:48Speaker 1: fourth round they pulled the trigger on somebody. Somebody like
- 57:51Speaker 1: any of those guys I wouldn't be. That wouldn't bother
- 57:53Speaker 1: me at all. Governor Chief, let me throw in my
- 57:57Speaker 1: answers to your questions. The guy I do not want
- 58:00Speaker 1: Pittsburgh to take as obviously been as obviously Desmond Ritter.
- 58:04Speaker 1: I've been talking about this for months a because I
- 58:06Speaker 1: think Desmond Ridder will ultimately be a good NFL quarterback,
- 58:11Speaker 1: and I don't want my hatred for the Steelers diluted
- 58:14Speaker 1: by my love for Desmond Ritterers. So it breaks my
- 58:17Speaker 1: heart when I see mock drafts that have Ritter going
- 58:20Speaker 1: to the Steelers at number twenty. That can happen just
- 58:22Speaker 1: personally for me. But on a slightly more serious note,
- 58:25Speaker 1: the player I do not want to wind up in
- 58:27Speaker 1: Baltimore is Jordan Davis, a massive nose tackle six six,
- 58:32Speaker 1: three hundred and forty one pounds, ran a four seven
- 58:35Speaker 1: eight at that size at the combine, which is unheard
- 58:38Speaker 1: of thirty four inch arms. The reason why I don't
- 58:40Speaker 1: want that to happen is they were so hard to
- 58:43Speaker 1: run on with Brandon Williams in the middle for all
- 58:46Speaker 1: of those years. Jordan Davis is Brandon Williams, but even better,
- 58:49Speaker 1: even better, even more athletic and taller and longer and
- 58:53Speaker 1: all those things. Yeah, I mean, he does have Baltimore
- 58:56Speaker 1: written all over him as an interi defensive player. There's
- 59:00Speaker 1: no question about it. Question from Tom, what's the strangest
- 59:04Speaker 1: thing you have ever seen happen on Draft Day? Oh? Man,
- 59:08Speaker 1: the strangest thing I've ever seen happen Minnesota forgetting to
- 59:11Speaker 1: get its first round picking in time. That that was.
- 59:14Speaker 1: That was a faux pap for sure, he means overall
- 59:17Speaker 1: in the entire draft or I think, so that's the question.
- 59:20Speaker 1: What's the strangest thing you have ever seen happen on
- 59:23Speaker 1: Draft Day? Boy, I don't know. I Mean, the thing
- 59:27Speaker 1: that's interesting to watch now is have these guys in
- 59:31Speaker 1: the red carpet room, you know, the the VIP room,
- 59:35Speaker 1: waiting to get drafted and watching Aaron Rodgers slide was
- 59:41Speaker 1: it was, there was a cocktail of emotions there, you know.
- 59:44Speaker 1: And boy did he did he ever say to the league,
- 59:47Speaker 1: you know, all thumb my nose at you over this one,
- 59:51Speaker 1: because man, what was going through that guy's mind and
- 59:54Speaker 1: to be that exposed and to have all your emotions,
- 59:57Speaker 1: you know, be right out there on national TV in
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: front of everybody. That uh that that's an interesting twist
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: that they're doing by inviting guys to that VIP room
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: like that, because there's always going to be one that
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: you know, it just doesn't happen for him. And having
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: having you know, gone through a draft and played in
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: the league just that's hard. That's hard to watch guys
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: have their hearts broken like that. I remember that happening
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: with Thurman Thomas before the Bills took them in the
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: second round. Question from Brian coming off the Super Bowl loss.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: How different will OTAs and training camp be? Will there
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: be a more intense sense of urgency? You know they're
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: Zach is not having you know, mandatory mini camp. It's
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: just just OTAs and uh, you know that's that's a
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: I think a signal that he really believes that his
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: team uh is in the spirit of it and it's
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: mature and everybody's uh, you know, pulling the oars in
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: the same direction, and then it's it's uh, we us
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: not I me. So it's I think that's a that's
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: an interesting decision that he made, and I think it's
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: a good one. I think that they had a long
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: they had the longest season in NFL history, and not
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: only physically do you need a break, but mentally you
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: also need to get away from it and in recharge
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: the battery, both mentally and physically. So I think that's
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: that's a little bit different. But I do think that
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: I'm not sure that there's a sense of urgency for
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: the OTAs, but I do think that based on the
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: success they've had, I think that they are smart enough
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: and aware enough to understand there's going to be a
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: bull's eye on their back now and what they did
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: last year from a work standpoint, is not going to
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: even be enough for this year. You're gonna have to
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: ratchet it up even a little bit more. And I
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: remember experiencing that we won the Super Bowl in eighty one,
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: had a work stoppage in eighty two, we only played
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: nine games. But I remember distinctly, you know, guys talking about, look,
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: you know, what we did last year, it ain't gonna
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: be enough this year, because man, you know, we're the hunted. Now,
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: We're not the hunter anymore. We're hunted. And that's what
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: this team has to realize right now, and I think
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: they have a pretty good, pretty good idea about it.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: I do think that that the chemistry and the culture
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: on this football team is pretty darnstrong. Our final question
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: comes from Decline Phase. The question simply reads step Brothers
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: or the other Guys? Have you seen either of those
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: two Will Farrell classic movies? I have to say I
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: have not, But I am a Will Farrell fan. I
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: am a will have you seen him? Dan Well? I
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: am the person that is well equipped to answer this question,
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: although I've only seen one of the two, so it
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: sounds like I need to see the other guys if
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: there's even a question. But when I was the radio
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: voice of the Patucket Red Sox, Stepbrothers had just become
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: available on DVD. So we watch this movie. I don't
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: think I'm exaggerating. Basically every road and it is awesome.
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: The classics, the Catalina wine mixer, Adam Scott's family singing
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: Sweet Child of Mine in the backseat of their car,
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: the tuxedo wearing interviews, the sleepwalking scenes, the boats and
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: hose video, the the line from my chest Pubes to
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: my ball frow. Stepbrothers is an all time classic. My
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: wife loves Stepbrothers. Whenever it comes on TV, I'm forced
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: to watch at least a chunk of it. So if
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: you're only going to watch one of one of the
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: other one or the other Gopher Stepbrothers, Stepbrothers, I'll keep
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: that in mind, and I will I will probably have
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: to look at Stepbrothers sooner rather than later. All right.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: That concludes this podcast preview of the Draft. Will be
