- 0:00Speaker 1: Looking for a good summer read.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Just to ask California's first partner, it's one more thing.
- 0:07Speaker 3: I'm strong Andy. There's a new book coming out in August.
- 0:18Speaker 3: I just listened to a podcast with the author the
- 0:21Speaker 3: other day. I'm going to try to read it. It's
- 0:22Speaker 3: about I don't even know if I can explain what
- 0:25Speaker 3: it's about. Complex. Well, the simple thing is what is life?
- 0:33Speaker 1: Well, that's got to be quite a book.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Which has never been answered. Nobody knows. There's no good
- 0:38Speaker 3: did you know? I didn't even know this. There's no
- 0:40Speaker 3: good definition for what life is as opposed to something
- 0:43Speaker 3: that's not alive. Nobody has any idea why life started,
- 0:47Speaker 3: how it started, what it is, how to define it anyway.
- 0:51Speaker 3: This new book is supposed to get closer to that
- 0:53Speaker 3: or trapped in the matrix, Yeah.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Exactly, Well that's true. Yeah, I remember having it to
- 0:59Speaker 1: find in college, but people find it. There's unsatisfactor.
- 1:04Speaker 3: There's not an agreed upon definition because every definition you
- 1:08Speaker 3: can come up with has all kinds of flaws. Then
- 1:09Speaker 3: you would say, okay, well then why isn't this life
- 1:12Speaker 3: or why isn't that life? Or you know that sort
- 1:14Speaker 3: of thing.
- 1:14Speaker 1: So well, says you Life's a bitch. I learned that
- 1:19Speaker 1: long ago. There's your definition, like.
- 1:22Speaker 3: You to say when I was in high school, life's
- 1:24Speaker 3: a bitch, and then you die and life's a party.
- 1:26Speaker 3: That's me My definition, life is a highway.
- 1:32Speaker 4: I got a question for you, guys, Yes, do you
- 1:34Speaker 4: consider working to be life? And the reason I'm asking
- 1:37Speaker 4: this is I knew somebody that they were retiring. I asked,
- 1:40Speaker 4: why are you retiring? He said, so I can finally
- 1:42Speaker 4: do something, I can finally live.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Well, they must have hated their job a lot. It's funny.
- 1:47Speaker 3: We're in a special circumstance. This is fun to me. True,
- 1:50Speaker 3: I do always have to remember that I have a
- 1:52Speaker 3: job I really enjoy doing and get tremendous satisfaction out of.
- 1:56Speaker 3: But uh, I also know a guy real recently. I
- 1:59Speaker 3: talked to him last Friday who retired from a job
- 2:01Speaker 3: he hated like six months ago, and he's more miserable
- 2:04Speaker 3: now than when he worked his job.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Wow.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Oh yeah, it's you know, work is a lot of
- 2:11Speaker 3: your life. It's a lot of who you are.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Yeah, there's just no question that you cross that bridge
- 2:17Speaker 2: and some people land on that new shore quite comfortably
- 2:23Speaker 2: goes great. I have friends like that. I play golf
- 2:26Speaker 2: with them and some it's a lot of trouble and
- 2:29Speaker 2: they struggle.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Just who knows.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Anyway, back to the question of a beatree jack as
- 2:34Speaker 2: Summer read Alert listener Alnonymous, good old friend of the
- 2:40Speaker 2: Armstrong and Getty Show and of me personally sent this along.
- 2:43Speaker 1: The first Partner's Summer.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Book Club from the gov dot CA dot gov website.
- 2:50Speaker 2: The first Partner's Summer Book Club California for All Kids,
- 2:55Speaker 2: launched in partnership with the California State Library. The first partner,
- 2:58Speaker 2: that's Jennifer Siebel Newsom, who is a far left neo
- 3:01Speaker 2: Marxist activist loon her book.
- 3:04Speaker 3: I'm offended by the mere idea of the governor's wife
- 3:12Speaker 3: putting out a reading list that anybody would look at
- 3:16Speaker 3: to come up with what they want to read or
- 3:17Speaker 3: what they want their kids to read. That just the
- 3:21Speaker 3: idea of it offends me. Really, if that's where you're
- 3:24Speaker 3: going to get your reading information from a politician's spouse,
- 3:27Speaker 3: all right, who's a far.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Well known far left activist.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Yeah, when we read with our children early and off,
- 3:36Speaker 2: and it encourages young readers blah blah blah, which is
- 3:38Speaker 2: absolutely true.
- 3:39Speaker 1: I agree with that. But here's here's your book list.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Let's start with preschoolers.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Here's what the first partner recommends preschoolers read or have
- 3:46Speaker 2: read to them.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Nana the Great goes camping. Okay, in our garden.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Millie has recently moved to a new city from a
- 3:54Speaker 2: place more than an ocean away. She misses her garden
- 3:57Speaker 2: used to grow food. Amara's far Mamara hosting a pot
- 4:01Speaker 2: luck for friends on her farm. She needs help finding
- 4:03Speaker 2: her pumpkins. Blah blah blah.
- 4:05Speaker 1: All our neighbors.
- 4:06Speaker 2: When a new family moves in, the whole neighborhood comes
- 4:08Speaker 2: together to celebrate their diverse community and the tree in me.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Through poetic text and exquisite illustrations of children reveling in nature,
- 4:17Speaker 2: this book explores various ways we as human beings are strong, creative,
- 4:20Speaker 2: and connected. That sounds just fine. Okay, that's your preschoolers's
- 4:24Speaker 2: let's move on.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Diverse is more than I wanted, but isn't not into
- 4:28Speaker 3: the I'm angry territory yet.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Yeah, you're gonna see certain patterns emerging here. K through
- 4:34Speaker 2: two Just Like Me, a collection of poetry filled with
- 4:37Speaker 2: engaging mini stories about girls of all kinds. Girls who
- 4:41Speaker 2: feel happy said, don't love their.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Bed and brunette or different kinds.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Water Day a joyful picture book about a young girl
- 4:48Speaker 2: in her community celebrating the arrival of something in water.
- 4:52Speaker 2: I Am Enough, a gorgeous, lyrical ode to loving who
- 4:54Speaker 2: you are, respecting others, being kind to one another. She
- 4:57Speaker 2: Persisted in sports. In the third She Persistent book, Chelsea
- 5:01Speaker 2: Clinton introduces the readers to women who have excelled in
- 5:04Speaker 2: their sports.
- 5:05Speaker 3: The pattern I'm supposed to pick up on here is
- 5:07Speaker 3: are all girl oriented?
- 5:09Speaker 1: Finding my dance?
- 5:10Speaker 2: Follow along is Rhea Thundercloud shares her dance journey from
- 5:14Speaker 2: blah blah blah.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Grades three through five.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Plant Cookieat discover how plant seeds and patio containers, blah

- 5:37Speaker 2: connects with zab willdo and learns what it And then
- 5:40Speaker 2: Arelli is a Dreamer, A story about Aurelli Morales a
- 5:44Speaker 2: DACA recipient, So you got to be a chick or
- 5:47Speaker 2: an immigrant. Otherwise your story is bullshit. Nobody wants to
- 5:51Speaker 2: hear it. All right, you can be a chick or
- 5:53Speaker 2: an immigrant.
- 5:54Speaker 1: That's it.
- 5:56Speaker 3: So no. Uh, two boys like the Hardy Boys. One
- 6:01Speaker 3: of the reasons boys like the Hardy Boys so much
- 6:03Speaker 3: as those boys doing boys stuff. Popular book series from
- 6:07Speaker 3: when we were young. Yeah, Mexicans can't be Irish, lad
- 6:12Speaker 3: I've got ages eleven through fourteen. Here it's teens who
- 6:18Speaker 3: are in the autism spectrum. Obviously I have no problem
- 6:21Speaker 3: with that. Let's see, here's another immigrant who's swimming at
- 6:26Speaker 3: a swimming pool. Apparently than the Blackbird Girls, Brown Girl Dreaming,
- 6:31Speaker 3: Rebel Girls Celebrate Pride, twenty five Tales of Self Love,
- 6:36Speaker 3: Community Inspiring Tales Chicks only from the LGB t q
- 6:41Speaker 3: I ab CD Barbecue Community Women in Art. Let's skip
- 6:46Speaker 3: to the grades nine through twelve. Brave Plucky Eliza deals

- 6:55Speaker 3: and I Am not your perfect Mexican daughter rounds out
- 6:58Speaker 3: the choices. I know we talk about it, but at
- 7:02Speaker 3: some point it's got to reach national consensus that Okay,
- 7:07Speaker 3: we went, We went plenty far and making sure girls
- 7:11Speaker 3: are getting an education and have an opportunity to go
- 7:14Speaker 3: to college, and blah blah blah. We kind of left
- 7:17Speaker 3: boys out of it somewhere along the way, and we
- 7:19Speaker 3: better turn our attention to that, because well, the reading
- 7:24Speaker 3: list and all kinds there's all kinds of stats out there.
- 7:27Speaker 3: I got two boys. All the girls are super into
- 7:30Speaker 3: learning and straight a students. A lot of the boys
- 7:33Speaker 3: are kind of meh about school, and I think that's
- 7:36Speaker 3: because of the way it's structured. It's structured. It's very
- 7:39Speaker 3: girl centered focused, designed for your personality and interests.
- 7:47Speaker 2: I never talk about politicians' children and never will in
- 7:51Speaker 2: any substantive way. I happen to know the nwsoms have
- 7:56Speaker 2: a couple of sons, and I have a sick feeling
- 8:00Speaker 2: in my stomach, which I hope is wrong. I'm sure
- 8:04Speaker 2: they love their sons very much and want the best
- 8:06Speaker 2: for them. But to grow with with a mom who
- 8:10Speaker 2: is so openly disdainful of males that her reading list
- 8:16Speaker 2: includes not a single boys adventure unless they're an immigrant.
- 8:22Speaker 2: That just that it's my Angelou's When people try to

- 8:35Speaker 2: Right, No, she's openly disdainful of that.
- 8:39Speaker 3: That's interesting. Yeah, but don't get your reading lists for
- 8:43Speaker 3: your kids from politicians anyway. Yeah right.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Unless your dearest dream is that your child become a
- 8:49Speaker 2: little Marxist, then this list is perfect for them.
- 8:55Speaker 4: Join us next time for California Lieutenant Governor's list of
- 8:59Speaker 4: helpful maps and Almanax. Don't travel until you've heard it. Well,
