Transcript
- 0:00Hey, you guys, welcome to episode 144, a Front Light
- 0:05Static. I am entitling this episode
- 0:08listening to the Whisper. And if you guys listened to the
- 0:12episode right before this, I was telling you that there's
- 0:16something new coming. And I am really excited to be
- 0:20announcing that very soon at the end of this month of what this
- 0:24new offer is and what I'm bringing to you guys.
- 0:27But this has all been because I chose to listen to the whisper.
- 0:33And I want to let you guys know, listening to the whisper is
- 0:36something that I have been doing for a lot of my life.
- 0:42And I really think it's this willingness to understand that
- 0:46you have this one life to live, but willing to go at it and
- 0:52become the person who lives multiple lives within the one
- 0:57you have. And what I mean by that is we
- 1:00all have these little whispers that go on in our head that are
- 1:03like, maybe I should do this. It's your time.
- 1:07Go for the job, go for the thing, start the business, take
- 1:12the leadership role, have the kids, take the vacation,
- 1:16whatever the little whisper is for you.
- 1:18This is what I'm going to talk about today.
- 1:22Listening to the whisper has helped me shift into many
- 1:26identities in my life. Listening to the whisper has had
- 1:29me go from having a degree in communications with an emphasis
- 1:35in broadcast journalism, going for that, deciding I don't like
- 1:38that, shifting into banking, doing banking for five years,
- 1:42having three kids and twins that were in the NICU, that really I
- 1:49found my love for nursing. Shifting into getting a nursing
- 1:54degree and becoming a nurse for 15 years and then making the
- 1:57huge shift from ICU nurse to flight nurse.
- 2:01And then my last most recent shift was when I decided to go
- 2:06all in on becoming a life coach and retire totally from nursing.
- 2:11And I've been thinking about what has allowed me to do that,
- 2:17to listen to the whisper every time I heard a whisper to start
- 2:21again, to make the shift. And I've kind of narrowed it
- 2:24down into six kind of steps that I've taken.
- 2:28And this is what I want to talk to you guys about today.
- 2:30So this episode is for all of you guys who have heard the
- 2:35whisper and maybe are on the fence about listening to it or
- 2:39not. And I hope by the end of this
- 2:41episode you get the motivation. You feel not only that urge, but
- 2:48you want to start taking action to listen to that whisper.
- 2:52Because I promise you when you do, you will continue to step
- 2:56into the next best version of you.
- 2:59You will live the life that feels full for you.
- 3:03And I want you to live your life confidently, always listening to
- 3:07that. So I'm going to briefly talk
- 3:09about these 6 steps that I've kind of taken myself every time
- 3:13I've listened to The Whisper and I've made big shifts in my life.
- 3:17So #1 is really just having the self-awareness that this is
- 3:21going on for you, that you're hearing it, that you're
- 3:25listening to it. It's, I can't exactly explain
- 3:31maybe what it's like for you, but for me, I remember the most
- 3:36poignant time of listening to a whisper was it was about two
- 3:40weeks after my older brother had passed away.
- 3:43He was 38 years old and died of liver cirrhosis from a long time
- 3:47of alcohol abuse in his life and addiction.
- 3:50And I remember I was working in the ICU and I knew that I'd
- 3:56always wanted to be a flight nurse.
- 3:57And I think it'd been beyond a year of the time that I and
- 4:01experience that I really needed. I think I'd been in the ICU for
- 4:04four years and I was just waiting to feel confident.
- 4:08I was waiting to feel ready, which is this false sense of
- 4:12being able to do something right when we wait, because we're
- 4:15never going to feel ready. We're never going to feel
- 4:17confident. And I remember sitting there and
- 4:23it was about two weeks after and I was going to my shift and I'm
- 4:27like, this is where I'm going to choose to live.
- 4:31This is where I'm going to choose to go for it and really
- 4:36live into what I knew I wanted. And I remember I started
- 4:41applying and those applications turned into interviews.
- 4:44And I interviewed and I got the job.
- 4:48And I remember feeling so much discomfort because I was
- 4:53stepping into something new and I had so much doubt and I was so
- 4:58nervous and I was so scared. And I remember feeling alive
- 5:04though, from listening to that whisper to not feeling like I
- 5:08was holding back, to going all in.
- 5:10And so that was a first step, is having self-awareness of what
- 5:14you really want. Being willing to ask yourself is
- 5:17what I'm doing right now, what I really want are the actions that
- 5:21I'm taking? Is the way that I'm living my
- 5:23life really what I want? And then part of this, listening
- 5:27to the whisper, is deciding and then committing.
- 5:29I remember when I decided to go for flight, there was no turning
- 5:32back. I was going to keep on knocking
- 5:34on flight's door until I got a yes.
- 5:38And that's what's part of this step is you have to decide and
- 5:42then you have to commit. You can't be wavering back and
- 5:46forth about am I going to do this?
- 5:48Am I not going to do this? Is this right for me?
- 5:49Is this not? It's like decide, go all in and
- 5:53then commit that you're going to figure it out until you get it,
- 5:55no matter how many Nos it takes for you to get to it.
- 5:59Step 2 was I had to learn to declutter my brain, meaning I
- 6:05had to just be willing without judgment to get out and journal
- 6:09everything my brain was thinking.
- 6:12And with every shift in my life and every actually this is a
- 6:15daily practice that I do every day, I wake up and I'm like,
- 6:19what are the thoughts my brains offering me?
- 6:22And usually it starts with, you're not good enough, you're
- 6:24not going fast enough, it's not happening quickly enough, you're
- 6:27not smart enough, you're not confident enough.
- 6:29You have so much doubt. And it's just being willing to
- 6:32hear what those thoughts are. Get them all out on paper, type
- 6:37them out, spend time with them without judging them and then
- 6:42realizing maybe what are the predominant feelings that these
- 6:46common thoughts are giving you. And I remember while I was going
- 6:50for flight, the the biggest feeling that I had was extreme
- 6:55doubt. And in decluttering this brain,
- 6:58I realized, oh, this is doubt. And instead of like taking a
- 7:05bunch of action to try to get rid of the doubt, I really want
- 7:08to offer you just become the person who takes whatever the
- 7:11emotion is with you. For me also, it's pressure.
- 7:14I felt actually pressure my whole life, especially as I
- 7:17started in nursing school, as I started in a high pressurized
- 7:21job and not ACU as a new grad. And then as I went into flight
- 7:24nursing and then eventually as I retired from flight nursing and
- 7:27went into full time life coaching and entrepreneurship
- 7:30and owning my own business. A level of pressure was there.
- 7:34And what I want to offer for you is to not let your brain say you
- 7:40can have doubt or be confident. You can feel pressure or be
- 7:43successful. Become the person who fills your
- 7:46backpack up with the pressure and the doubt.
- 7:49You strap it on your back and you start walking and taking
- 7:52action with it. So this is part of Step 2, which
- 7:55is decluttering your brain, finding out what is the emotion
- 7:59that you're feeling because of these thoughts, and just taking
- 8:03this emotion with you without judgement and start taking
- 8:06action with it #3. The biggest thing in this is we
- 8:11have to create your vision, meaning we have to redirect what
- 8:17is your purpose and your why. And you have to be willing to
- 8:20redirect this every second of every day, if not on the daily
- 8:26practice. So when I was trying to get to
- 8:30flight, there was a lot of you don't know enough, you don't
- 8:33have enough time and experience, you're not smart enough.
- 8:37And what I had to keep redirecting and telling my brain
- 8:41was, this is what I want. I want to be able to help people
- 8:46in highly pressurized situations use my skills that I've learned
- 8:50in the last four years. I do really well under pressure.
- 8:54I have high levels of critical thinking to help save people's
- 8:57lives and to do this day in and day out.
- 9:01To go to a job that I know I was meant to be doing, to live out
- 9:07my dream job. And I had to keep redirecting my
- 9:11brain and telling myself, this is my vision, this is my
- 9:15purpose. This is my why.
- 9:18Create your vision story. Tell yourself why you want this
- 9:23dream, why you want this goal and be willing to redirect your
- 9:27brain over and over and over again every time it tells you
- 9:32that you're not capable and that you can't do it.
- 9:36You got to create what is the purpose you want it and why do
- 9:40you want it. Similarly, when I went into life
- 9:45coaching, I went to the certified.
- 9:47I got certified as a life coach through the life coach school.
- 9:50And when I hired my own first life coach, I realized I have
- 9:55the tools and I have the ability to change beliefs about myself,
- 10:02to do things that I've never done before, to create a life
- 10:07that I'd only dreamed of. And when I found out these
- 10:11tools, I wanted to put these tools in the hands of everybody
- 10:14who wanted to make a shift and make a change for their life
- 10:18too, and go after what they really wanted.
- 10:21And I really believe we all have the capacity and capability to
- 10:25do that. And so my vision became bigger
- 10:28than what I loved doing, which was flight nursing.
- 10:31My vision story and my purpose now became how do I put these
- 10:36life coaching tools in the hands of everybody who wants to change
- 10:40their life, who wants to level up, who wants to create big
- 10:44things for themselves, who wants to live multiple lives in this
- 10:47one life and keep doing it over and over and over and over again
- 10:51confidently. And so that became my vision
- 10:54story. So create your vision story.
- 10:57What is your purpose? What is your why?
- 10:59And be willing to redirect your brain over and over and over
- 11:02again to what that is Step 4, you got to tap into capability.
- 11:08Sometimes we think that we're only capable of what we can
- 11:12hold. So for example, like we take a
- 11:14glass of water and we pour water in it and that's our capability.
- 11:17And then when we hit the top of the water glass that we're not
- 11:20capable of doing anymore. But we all know we've done hard
- 11:24things and we all know that our capability is expansive.
- 11:31And the more that we test it, the more that we grow at, the
- 11:34more we expand it. And I can just think of like
- 11:37really hard times in my life where I didn't think I was
- 11:42capable of more. And my very first time of
- 11:46remembering it being really hard was when I was in nursing
- 11:51school. You just will never work as hard
- 11:52as you did in nursing school. I had three kids under the age
- 11:56of two. I just had my twins that were
- 11:58five months old. I took a tech position after
- 12:01doing banking for five years, night shift.
- 12:04I worked three nights a week and then went to school and
- 12:07clinicals the four other days. And I remember getting stretched
- 12:11so far and I'm like, can I keep doing it?
- 12:15And after doing that for two years, I grew my capability to
- 12:19the to the, to realizing that I didn't have a ceiling of what I
- 12:23was capable of, to realizing that I can keep stretching, that
- 12:28I can keep growing it. And in fact, as I continue to do
- 12:31the hard thing, as I continue to put myself in the uncomfortable
- 12:36moments, as I continue to push up against that threshold of
- 12:40doubt and fear, that's how I grow my capability.
- 12:44So that when it's no longer about pouring a glass, of
- 12:49pouring water into a glass, and that's my capability, no, it's
- 12:53about infinitely I can keep pouring the water.
- 12:56And that glass keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger and
- 12:59bigger as I grow. And I'm willing to be
- 13:01uncomfortable, and with my capability growing, my capacity
- 13:06to have more, to do more, to be the person who can go out and
- 13:13challenge myself and love the challenge grew too.
- 13:17And I still think that I have it in me to continue to grow my
- 13:21capability and, and, and in doing that and, and growing your
- 13:26capability, you have to be willing to challenge yourself
- 13:28and also find the joy in the challenge.
- 13:31Go back and listen to Finding the Joy in the Challenge
- 13:34podcast. Because now I love the
- 13:36challenge. I love playing hard games.
- 13:39I love being competitive. I love giving myself challenges
- 13:44of becoming more, so I just want to offer you guys tap into your
- 13:50capability and know that your capability is infinite.
- 13:52Let's grow it #5 this is a big one.
- 13:58And if you have worked with me in any of my programs or
- 14:01one-on-one, you will know this is what I teach.
- 14:05This is what will create results in your life.
- 14:08A future focus. You have to be pulled from the
- 14:11future. You.
- 14:13We just have this part of us that's like tells us, oh, we
- 14:16can't do something if we haven't done it in the past before.
- 14:18Our brain likes to look to the past to see if we're capable of
- 14:21doing something, but then that always limits us of creating
- 14:25something we've never done before.
- 14:27And so when I think about big goals that I'm creating, big
- 14:30shifts, big transitions that I'm making, I pull to the future me
- 14:35and I have future focus. I think about the me who is
- 14:40already there. I think about the me who has
- 14:45stepped into this new role. What, how does she dress?
- 14:51How does she think? What does she believe about
- 14:54herself? How does she handle
- 14:57circumstances and obstacles that come her way?
- 15:01How does she handle life when it's lifing and you have 0
- 15:06control about it? I think about her who's already
- 15:10made the shift and I think about what are some thoughts that
- 15:14she's thinking and I and, and when I think about that, I think
- 15:19she's thinking I did it bring me the hard, show me the hard.
- 15:25I can handle the hard bring it on.
- 15:28I also think some thoughts that she's thinking is watch me.
- 15:33I know that this person has come up against because with each
- 15:37shift in my life, I had friends and family that I thought would
- 15:39go with me that didn't and I had to hold the belief for them.
- 15:43And one thought that really helped me keep my future focus
- 15:47was watch me. I'll go first, watch me navigate
- 15:52it, watch me do it. If I can do it, you can too.
- 15:56And I really think that this is what the future me is thinking.
- 15:58So you got to go to her. You got to go to him.
- 16:01You have to go to the person who's already made that shift,
- 16:04who's already made that transition, who's already in
- 16:06that role. What does she think?
- 16:09What does he think? And then I always ask myself,
- 16:13what is the first step she tells you to take?
- 16:16Because we as perfectionist or as doers try to solve for all
- 16:20the steps and we just can't go to the how.
- 16:21We don't know the how. If we knew the how, we would
- 16:24already be doing it. What's really important in this
- 16:27step is who, like who is the person who accomplishes it?
- 16:31Who is the person that we have to be?
- 16:33And so I always ask her from the person from the future meet, who
- 16:37has the thing, who's made the shift, who's done the
- 16:39transition. I always ask her what is the
- 16:42first best step I need to take? And then I take that first step
- 16:46and then I take that second and then I take that third.
- 16:49And I ask her, what has she thought when she's when she's
- 16:53arrived? And it's always, I figured it
- 16:58out. I did it.
- 17:00And so the thought that propels me and you guys can take this
- 17:04thought for yourself too, is I'm going to figure it out.
- 17:07I always figure it out. If I keep going, I'm going to
- 17:11get it. O that's number five.
- 17:15Number six, The last step in all of this.
- 17:18I call this action acceleration. You got to take a bunch of
- 17:23action. You have to fail forward.
- 17:25You have to be willing to create a plan, even if you don't know.
- 17:29And this is a thing, a lot of you guys create plans and you,
- 17:33you spin in your plan because you're like, I want to create
- 17:36the one that I'll meet the least resistance with the least amount
- 17:40of work that will get me the result.
- 17:42And here's the thing about action, action acceleration.
- 17:44Action acceleration is failing forward as quickly as we can.
- 17:48Creating a plan, taking a bunch of action, evaluating, asking
- 17:53yourself what's working, what's not working, what I want to do
- 17:55differently, and then taking action and evaluating action and
- 18:00evaluating, but taking action. Not from a place of what's going
- 18:03to be the thing that's going to get me there, but just willing
- 18:06to try a bunch of things. What I think about is these corn
- 18:10mazes or mazes that you guys go into, you're not like, OK, I'm
- 18:14going to just only go left and only go right if I know it's
- 18:17going to get me through the maze.
- 18:18No, you're taking a bunch of action to get through the maze.
- 18:20You're like, I'm going to go left, then I'm going to go
- 18:22right, and then I'm going to see what happens.
- 18:24And then you start over and then you keep going and you keep
- 18:26going. This is action acceleration.
- 18:29But we got to get ourselves into the action.
- 18:31And I think what stops most of you guys is you want to take the
- 18:35simplest amount of action that's going to create the result for
- 18:38you. But action acceleration means
- 18:40we're going to create the momentum and we're going to take
- 18:42a bunch of action. And then after we take a bunch
- 18:44of action, pass or fail, we're going to evaluate what's
- 18:47working, what's not working, what I want to do differently.
- 18:50And then we're going to continue to take action, continue to take
- 18:52action, continue to take action. As you take the action, that's
- 18:57where you create the momentum. The momentum will get you into
- 19:00power. But one thing that I want to
- 19:02preface is the prerequisite to getting to your goal, the
- 19:06prerequisite to making the shift and transitioning into the new
- 19:10person that you want to be is going to be a negative emotion.
- 19:14And you have to figure out what is that for you?
- 19:16For me, it's doubt and it's pressure.
- 19:18I have to be willing to take the pressure and the doubt with me
- 19:21and still take action. I have to be willing to have
- 19:24uncertainty and still take action.
- 19:27The prerequisite to feeling empowered, feeling confident, is
- 19:33a negative emotion. Figure out what that negative
- 19:35emotion is that you're trying to avoid.
- 19:38And we don't want to avoid it by taking a bunch of action.
- 19:40We want to recognize what is that emotion for you.
- 19:43For me, it's doubting and uncertainty and then how do I
- 19:47take action with it, with allowing it and not avoiding it?
- 19:51Action, acceleration, continued evaluation.
- 19:54I promise you if you continue to do this, you will get it.
- 19:59And the next time you want something, you will shorten the
- 20:02amount of time it takes for you to get there.
- 20:04These are the steps that I have taken, these 6 steps to listen
- 20:09to the whisper and to make the shift number one, I listen to
- 20:12the whisper. I had self-awareness, I decided,
- 20:15and I committed. #2I decluttered my brain, I recognize the
- 20:19negative thought loops that I was in and what's the negative
- 20:21feeling I got to take with me #3 I created my vision story.
- 20:27What is your purpose and what is your why?
- 20:30And keep redirecting your brain to it over and over and over
- 20:33again #4 Tap into capability and capacity.
- 20:38Become the person who does the uncomfortable thing, who takes
- 20:41the fear with them and grows the capability in a capacity over
- 20:45and over and over again #5 future focus.
- 20:49Go to her, see what she has to tell you.
- 20:52Learn from her wisdom, glean from it.
- 20:55Find out what are the thoughts and beliefs that she has about
- 20:58herself. And number six is action
- 21:00acceleration. Create the momentum.
- 21:02Take a bunch of action. Be willing to take a doubt and
- 21:05uncertainty with you and take the action anyway, you guys.
- 21:09If anything in this episode motivates you to finally listen
- 21:14to the whisper and to live an abundant life, the one you are
