Latest / UNMASKED with Wesley Farnsworth / Ep 29 - Brotherhood of Battle: Why You Can’t Fight Alone
Transcript
- 0:00Picture this with me. A soldier stands on a
- 0:02battlefield, armored, dented, exhausted, and outnumbered.
- 0:06He's talented, skilled, strong, and he knows every tactic, every
- 0:11maneuver, every survival instinct.
- 0:14But he's alone. And no matter how strong he is,
- 0:17no matter how trained he is, no matter how disciplined, a
- 0:21soldier standing alone is a soldier who won't survive long.
- 0:25Now imagine something changes. He hears footsteps behind him,
- 0:30not enemies, but allies, men or women who lock Shields with his,
- 0:34who can cover the angles that he can't see, who shout warnings
- 0:38that he can't hear, who fight beside him when the attack gets
- 0:43heavy, who refused to leave him behind, and who's who say with
- 0:47their presence. You may be tired, but you're not
- 0:50alone. Not today, not ever.
- 0:53That, right there, is what today's episode is all about.
- 0:57Because some battles were never meant to be fought solo.
- 1:01Some fights require something deeper than skill or strength.
- 1:05They require brotherhood. They require sisterhood.
- 1:08They require community in the trenches.
- 1:16Welcome back to Unmasked, the podcast where we strip away the
- 1:19illusions of isolation and talk honestly about what it means to
- 1:24walk with God, with purpose, and with each other.
- 1:27I'm your host, Wesley Farnsworth, and and this episode
- 1:33is part three of our series, The Power of Community.
- 1:36And today's episode is titled and today's episode is titled
- 1:40Brotherhood of Battle. Why You Can't Fight Alone.
- 1:44This is the episode where we shift from safe spaces, the
- 1:47places that comfort us, to battle spaces, the places where
- 1:51we grow, fight, and overcome. Because healing is one thing,
- 1:55transformation is another. But overcoming that requires
- 1:59A-Team. So let's get into it.
- 2:06Let's start with something simple, but incredibly true.
- 2:09You don't need a crowd. You need a crew.
- 2:12A crowd watches you, but a crew carry you.
- 2:16A crowd applause to you, but a crew challenges you.
- 2:19A crowd sees your highlight reel, but a crew sees your
- 2:22battles. Crowd can admire you, but a crew
- 2:25can fight with you. And if life is a battle, which
- 2:28it absolutely is, then you don't want to win battles with
- 2:31applause. You want to win them with
- 2:33allies. The greatest victories in
- 2:35Scripture were rarely early solitary events.
- 2:38David had Jonathan, Moses had Aaron and her, Paul had Timothy,
- 2:44Silas, Barnabas, Luke, Priscilla, Aquila.
- 2:48Jesus had the 12, and even within that, he had three.
- 2:52Anyone who tries to fight alone eventually falls alone.
- 2:56So let's just be direct here for a moment.
- 2:58Isolation doesn't just make you lonely, it makes you vulnerable
- 3:04in in nature, predators never attacked the herd, they target
- 3:08the one who gets separated. You may feel strong, you may
- 3:11feel self-sufficient, you may feel like you have got the right
- 3:14tools and the right willpower. But hear me, you can be
- 3:18spiritually armed and still emotionally outnumbered.
- 3:22No one, and I mean no one is strong enough for every battle
- 3:26alone. There are moments in your life
- 3:28when you will need someone to say, hey, I see that attack
- 3:31coming and I'm not going to let you take it alone.
- 3:34You will need somebody to link arms with you.
- 3:37There have been seasons in my life when I thought I could push
- 3:39through by myself, Seasons where I carried burdens quietly, where
- 3:43I thought battles internally, when I tried to muscle through
- 3:47the pain alone. But then God brought people into
- 3:50my life, brothers, mentors, friends, not to replace him, but
- 3:55to represent him. There were men who saw me
- 3:57fighting and saw the fight wearing me down and said, Wes,
- 4:01I'm standing with you. They challenged me when I need
- 4:04the truth. They encouraged me when I felt
- 4:06empty. They refused to let me retreat
- 4:09into isolation. They reminded me of who I was
- 4:13when Shane tried convincing me otherwise.
- 4:16And I'll tell you right now, I would not be here today.
- 4:20I would not be talking to you today through this podcast
- 4:23without those relationships. Even Jesus had people who held
- 4:27on his arms up emotionally, physically, and relationally in
- 4:32the Son of God. If the Son of God wasn't
- 4:34designed to walk alone, why do you think we are?
- 4:37Every person needs three kinds of relationships, three types of
- 4:42people who play different roles in the battle.
- 4:45So let's walk through those three different types of people.
- 4:47The first one is a Jonathan, someone who fights beside you.
- 4:51Jonathan wasn't just David's friend, he was David's brother
- 4:55in battle. Someone who believed in him,
- 4:58defended him, encouraged him, protected him, and fought for
- 5:02him. A Jonathan is the person who
- 5:04says you don't scare me, your struggle doesn't intimidate me,
- 5:08I'm not going anywhere. You don't need 10 Jonathans, you
- 5:12just need one. The second is a Nathan, someone
- 5:15who tells you the truth. Nathan was the one person who
- 5:19looked Daniel in the eyes and said you're off track.
- 5:22Here's the truth, here's what you need to face.
- 5:25Nathan didn't embarrass him. Nathan didn't shame him.
- 5:28Nathan didn't reject him. He guided him back to God.
- 5:32You need someone in your life who loves you too much to lie to
- 5:35you, someone who isn't threatened by your honesty and
- 5:39isn't impressed by your excuses. And finally, you need a Paul,
- 5:43someone who will build you up. Paul was the mentor, the
- 5:47discipler, the spiritual guide, the one who poured into others
- 5:52so that they could pour into others.
- 5:53You need someone older, wiser, or simply further down the road
- 5:58who can say I've been where you're going, let me walk with
- 6:01you. This could be a pastor, a
- 6:03mentor, a counselor, a leader, a sponsor, someone who is mature
- 6:08in their faith. When you have these three
- 6:10people, a Jonathan to walk with you, a Nathan to sharpen you,
- 6:15and appalled to guide you, you are spiritually protected.
- 6:18You are emotionally covered, you are relationally anchored, and
- 6:22you are equipped for battle. See, there's something different
- 6:25though, about friendships that are built in struggle.
- 6:28Brotherhood that is built in trenches matters because they're
- 6:32deeper, they're stronger, they're bonded by battle, not
- 6:36convenience. Real brotherhood or sisterhood
- 6:39is forged in the trenches, in the late night texts, in the
- 6:43accountability moments, in the confessions that feel scary to
- 6:46voice, in the prayers prayed for tear, in the prayers prayed with
- 6:51tears, and the honest conversations that others will
- 6:54never see. Battle friends are the one who
- 6:56show up when your strength runs out.
- 6:59They call you out on lies that you're believing.
- 7:01They remind you of who you are when you forget.
- 7:05They cover you spiritually when you're under attack.
- 7:07They speak truth when you want to run.
- 7:09They say you're not doing this alone.
- 7:12And here's what's beautiful and humbling.
- 7:14You don't become strong when you fight alone.
- 7:17You become strong when you fight together.
- 7:19See, deep friendship goes beyond service level connections
- 7:23because those aren't enough. Service level friendships feel
- 7:26good, but they won't save your life.
- 7:29And you know that. You know what I'm talking about?
- 7:31The kind that just says, how's work?
- 7:33How's family? How you been?
- 7:35Let's hang out sometime. Those friendships aren't bad.
- 7:38They're just not enough. Because when the spiritual
- 7:40battles hit, when you're staring down the darker parts of your
- 7:43story, when your mind is under attack and when temptation is
- 7:47pounding at your door, you don't need a coffee butter.
- 7:50You don't need a coffee buddy. You need a foxhole friend.
- 7:54Someone who doesn't flinch when you're honest.
- 7:56Someone who doesn't step back when things get messy.
- 7:59Someone who doesn't give up on you when you're tired.
- 8:02Someone who doesn't let you disappear.
- 8:04And tired in isolation. You want somebody who, when
- 8:07stuff hits the fan, you know that you can turn to them.
- 8:10Because real friendship requires vulnerability.
- 8:14The kind that says, this is who I really am, this is what I'm
- 8:18struggling with right now, and this is where I need help.
- 8:21You can only fight what you're willing to name, and you can
- 8:24only name it in front of people that you can trust with the
- 8:27truth. So let's talk about some
- 8:28practical systems that you can use to build a battle community
- 8:33because it's a great idea, because great ideas don't change
- 8:37lives unless they become habits. So here are structures that
- 8:41create and sustain battle community.
- 8:45The first one is weekly chickens.
- 8:47This can be a simple text or a call that just says, how's your
- 8:50heart? Really just knowing somebody
- 8:52will ask keeps you grounded. The second one is accountability
- 8:56questions. Not generic ones, but real ones.
- 9:00Questions that reach below the surface.
- 9:02What's been weighing on you? What lie did you believe this
- 9:04week? Where did you feel tempted to
- 9:06hide? Those questions are
- 9:08accountability questions. The third one is in person or
- 9:12video conversation because honesty hits different.
- 9:16When you can look at someone in the eyes, you can tell if
- 9:19they're being honest or not. It's important to have those
- 9:22types of communication every week with somebody.
- 9:25Finally, a safe group, team, or ministry Celebrate Recovery.
- 9:29A men's group, A woman's group, A discipleship group, counseling
- 9:34sessions, trusted community. All of these environments are
- 9:38great because they create rhythm, they create consistency,
- 9:42and they create spiritual protection.
- 9:44You need a call me Anytime person.
- 9:47You need You need a relationship that isn't scheduled.
- 9:51Someone that you can call at 11:00 PM.
- 9:53Someone you know, someone who knows the sound of your tears,
- 9:57someone who picks up on the second ring.
- 9:59You need somebody that can give you, that can give mutual
- 10:02encouragement. Battle, battle community isn't 1
- 10:05sided. You pour into them, they pour
- 10:07into you. You become stronger together.
- 10:10Iron sharpens iron. See, I'm not going to give
- 10:13details, but there was a night where I was overwhelmed.
- 10:16Drowning internally, exhausted mentally, struggling
- 10:21spiritually. I didn't plan to tell anyone
- 10:24because I didn't want to bother anyone.
- 10:26I didn't want to admit how the heavy things felt.
- 10:29But one friend, a true brother, noticed something in my voice
- 10:33and instead of brushing past it, he said what's going on, for
- 10:36real. He didn't judge me, he didn't
- 10:38fix me, he didn't quote scripture at me in a
- 10:40performative way. He just stayed with me and
- 10:43listened. And that that night, his
- 10:45presence kept me. And that night his presence kept
- 10:49me from falling deeper into isolation.
- 10:51I won't give details, but there was a night where I was
- 10:54overwhelmed and really, really hurting.
- 10:57I was drowning internally. I was exhausted mentally, and I
- 11:01was really struggling spiritually.
- 11:03I didn't know what to do. So I called one of my trench
- 11:07trench brothers and I talked to them and they could hear it in
- 11:10my voice that I was struggling. And they said what's going on
- 11:14for real? And they just allowed me to vent
- 11:16and to share what was going on in that moment.
- 11:19He didn't judge me. He didn't try to fix me.
- 11:22He didn't quote scripture at me in a performative way.
- 11:24He just stayed with me and listened.
- 11:27And that night, His presence kept me from falling deeper into
- 11:30isolation. His presence kept me from
- 11:32potentially turning to my former addiction.
- 11:35Because sometimes God shows up through people who simply refuse
- 11:39to leave. So what's in your battle
- 11:41formation? Look at your life right now.
- 11:44Not the version you present to others.
- 11:46The real 1. And ask yourself, who are the
- 11:48people that are standing in my battle formation?
- 11:51Do you have a Jonathan to walk with you?
- 11:53A Nathan to sharpen you, appalled to guide you?
- 11:57Do you have somebody who notices when you go quiet?
- 12:00Someone who asks the deeper questions?
- 12:02Someone who can challenge you without pushing you away?
- 12:05Somebody who wants your healing as much as you do?
- 12:08And that is just as important battle.
- 12:11Whose battle formation are you standing in?
- 12:14Because the community is not a one way relationship.
- 12:17It's mutual, it's shared and it's sacred.
- 12:20So here's your challenge for the week.
- 12:21Choose one person and invite them into your battle.
- 12:25Not with a full confession and not with every detail, but just
- 12:27one honest conversation. It could sound something like I
- 12:31need a Jonathan in my life. Can we talk once this week?
- 12:34Could we check in on each other? Can I share something that I'm
- 12:37carrying? Just one step, Brotherhood or
- 12:39sisterhood begins with bravery. Not a dramatic bravery, but a
- 12:43relational brave. So take the step and find your
- 12:47battle buddy. Thank you for joining me for
- 12:49episode 29 of Unmasked. In this series, we're uncovering
- 12:52the truth that healing happens in community, not the shallow
- 12:56kind, but the kind forged in honesty, vulnerability, and
- 13:00commitment. Next time in episode 31, we'll
- 13:03finish the series with Freedom Multiplies, The ripple effect of
- 13:07Community. It's the episode where we talk
- 13:09about how healing doesn't stop with you.
- 13:11It grows, spreads, and impacts the lives around you.
- 13:15Until then, remember you weren't made to fight alone.
- 13:18Strength grows in brotherhood and sisterhood, victory is found
- 13:22in community, and freedom is forged in the trenches together.
- 13:26God bless you.
