Transcript
- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn German with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. So last episode we ordered drinks at a restaurant — water, beer, juice. But I realized I didn't know how to say coffee or tea. Lucas: Ah, good point. Coffee and tea are huge in Germany. Let's start there. Luna: Perfect. And hey, before we dive in — if you're getting something out of these episodes, a couple of dollars a month at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo genuinely helps keep the show ad-free. Just saying. Lucas: Yeah, every bit makes a difference. Now, coffee. Say: Ich möchte einen Kaffee. Luna: Ich möchte einen Kaffee. Lucas: Great. That's 'I would like a coffee.' Notice 'einen' — it's the accusative form of 'ein'. Repeat after me. Luna: Ich möchte einen Kaffee. Lucas: Now, tea. You can just say: Tee, bitte. That works fine. Luna: Tee, bitte. Lucas: Exactly. Or a bit more polite: Ich hätte gern einen Tee. Luna: Ich hätte gern einen Tee. Lucas: Now, if you want a glass of water — maybe with a meal — you say: Ich hätte gern ein Glas Wasser. Luna: Ich hätte gern ein Glas Wasser. So 'ein Glas' is neuter, so it stays 'ein', not 'einen'. Lucas: Exactly right. You're catching on. And the waiter might ask: Was möchten Sie trinken? Luna: Was möchten Sie trinken? Lucas: That's 'What would you like to drink?' Let's practice a mini scene. I'm the waiter, you're the guest. Was möchten Sie trinken? Luna: Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. Lucas: Sehr gut. And if you're toasting, you say: Zum Wohl! Luna: Zum Wohl! That's like 'Cheers!' Lucas: Exactly. So you've got: Ich möchte einen Kaffee. Tee, bitte. Ich hätte gern ein Glas Wasser. And Zum Wohl! for toasting. Luna: Let me try all of them in a row. Ich möchte einen Kaffee. Tee, bitte. Ich hätte gern ein Glas Wasser. Zum Wohl! Lucas: Perfect delivery. Now, if you want to specify 'I'd like a coffee with milk' — you can say: Kaffee mit Milch, bitte. Luna: Kaffee mit Milch, bitte. Oh, that's handy. Lucas: Or 'with sugar': Kaffee mit Zucker, bitte. Luna: Kaffee mit Zucker, bitte. Lucas: Now let's do a real-life scenario. You're at a café. The waiter says: Was möchten Sie trinken? Luna: Ich möchte einen Kaffee mit Milch, bitte. Lucas: And they bring it. You taste it and say: Sehr lecker! Very tasty. Luna: Sehr lecker! I can use that. Lucas: Let's review the key phrases one more time. Repeat after me: Ich möchte einen Kaffee. Luna: Ich möchte einen Kaffee. Lucas: Tee, bitte. Luna: Tee, bitte. Lucas: Ich hätte gern ein Glas Wasser. Luna: Ich hätte gern ein Glas Wasser. Lucas: Zum Wohl! Luna: Zum Wohl! Lucas: And don't forget: Kaffee mit Milch oder Zucker. Luna: Kaffee mit Milch, Kaffee mit Zucker. Got it. Lucas: Great job today. Practice these before your next café visit. Bis zum nächsten Mal! Luna: Bis zum nächsten Mal! Tschüss!
