- 0:00Hello everyone and welcome back to Kenny Conversation, brought
- 0:04to you by Jags, the leader in high performance aftermarket car
- 0:08parts. Remember to go to jags.com.
- 0:13Well, we're honored once again quickly becoming one of the best
- 0:18in the world of outlaw Sprint car racing.
- 0:20Logan Shoe Art Logan, Welcome to Kenny Conversation.
- 0:25Thanks for having me buddy. Thanks for thinking of me.
- 0:27It's great to be on. Hey, is it right now?
- 0:31Are you 25 years old? I'm 30, 30.
- 0:36See, that's what got me in trouble.
- 0:39There's nothing wrong with being 30, but, you know, when we try
- 0:42to find people's ages, we look it up.
- 0:44And I guess what I was Googling was five years off.
- 0:47But it doesn't matter. You're awfully young and you
- 0:52know I'm a big fan of yours and I think it's one of these deals
- 0:56is where do we start? Do we do we start with the big
- 1:00win at Williams Grove on the last lap passing Brad Sweet, the
- 1:05four time World of All Champion or or do we do we talk about the
- 1:09$1,000,000 win at Eldora? I'm going to leave it up to you.
- 1:13Which one do you want to go with first?
- 1:16I don't know. Both of them were pretty cool,
- 1:18pretty memorable for sure. It took me 10 years to finally
- 1:22win a race at Williams Grove, which is our home race track,
- 1:25so. That's always where, you know,
- 1:27for my family and friends that can't travel, that's where
- 1:31they're always coming to. And it seemed like we struggled
- 1:33there for so long. So to finally get a win there
- 1:36and then in that kind of fashion was definitely really neat.
- 1:39But it's hard to beat that that big win week and a half ago at
- 1:44in, you know, Rossburg, Ohio. So it's pretty pretty awesome
- 1:49few weeks for us. Well, let's start like this.
- 1:52Let's start with Logan Schuhart, 30 years old Hanover, PA Your
- 1:59your grandfather is the great Sprint car Hall of Famer Bobby
- 2:02Allyn. You know, the you know, listen,
- 2:06you are very popular inside racing.
- 2:09I I always tell my friends, you look racing sometimes is a
- 2:12little bit of a cult. You can't go to Walmart, go to
- 2:15eat and expect everybody to know us.
- 2:17However, everybody knows you inside the racing world, so
- 2:22before we get to these races, you you grew up in racing.
- 2:28Let's get it out of the way. What is it like to grow up
- 2:31around Bobby? What is he like?
- 2:35He. Eats breeze, sleeps race cars,
- 2:37man. He's like that's he's he's
- 2:42turning 80 this year, but I don't.
- 2:45I don't think he slows down at all as far as his drive to want
- 2:48to win and and you know his days of of racing himself, as far as
- 2:53being a driver, it's as you know it's been a long time going but
- 2:57he's his ways of racing. Even when I was Jacob and I were
- 3:00kids and it was us racing go karts, you know his his drive to
- 3:06want to be, you know, what the tires were doing, how, what was
- 3:10the best chassis, what the guys were doing, how they were
- 3:12scaling the go karts. And you know it's on a much
- 3:15different level than what he was used to but his you know want to
- 3:20you know be the best or win and and just race like he loves it
- 3:24you know down to the core. So I that's who taught me to
- 3:29race and still does and I've I'm you know fortunate enough to
- 3:32have him by my side and these these big races that we can you
- 3:37know race together and share these memories and like I said
- 3:40he's. You know, almost 80 years old,
- 3:42but I'm, you know, still travels up and down the road with us.
- 3:45And you know he's who when I was a little kid, that's who I
- 3:48learned how to race from. He had a a go Kart track here in
- 3:52Hanover, PA, like an amusement type go Kart track.
- 3:58It's no longer around anymore. It was called Speedway 94 for a
- 4:01little bit, but you remember it. Yeah, that's that's how my
- 4:04grandpa taught me how to race. Really.
- 4:07Set up cones. You know on the straightaways to
- 4:10kind of get us going high on the straightaways and you know arc
- 4:13the corner and hit the apex right and all that kind of
- 4:16stuff. So that's how Jake and I learned
- 4:18how to race and as we got order is more of why he feels the cars
- 4:23you know do certain things what what makes them better on
- 4:26certain race tracks and how we can kind of learn the setups of
- 4:29the cars and and what makes them change.
- 4:31So I've I wouldn't say our team. You know there's a lot of people
- 4:36know and like you said in the in the racing world we, you know
- 4:40never never really had a whole lot of money.
- 4:41But we had his knowledge, his, his expertise of, you know,
- 4:45racing experience. And I was very, I am very
- 4:49fortunate to have somebody like that that can guide me to make,
- 4:53you know, the certain decisions that I that we make as a team,
- 4:56myself and my team make. And definitely very fortunate to
- 5:00have somebody like that by my side.
- 5:03Logan, I I think that's wonderful because I can really
- 5:05relate. You know, I'm an asphalt guy and
- 5:07I love dirt racing. I've been running dirt for 17 of
- 5:10my last years. But, you know, my dad was Russ
- 5:14Wallace, my brother Rusty and Mike.
- 5:17And then the great Dick Trickle would have been my Bobby Allen.
- 5:20You know, and it's funny how you talk about when we're kids, you
- 5:24know, we're born, maybe we're two, five years old and we're
- 5:28learning what I call geometry, you know, high down the
- 5:31straightaway. How do I make that arc on entry?
- 5:34Where do I let off the gas? Do I drag the brake?
- 5:37And I really like what you're saying.
- 5:39I can relate. And you know that that family of
- 5:42yours, I mean, Jacob Allen, Bobby Allen, Logan Schurr.
- 5:47I mean, these are the names of names.
- 5:51I know you are, but I just want to touch on that how, how proud
- 5:54of you are, you know, with with with you.
- 5:57I call you trio. That's a pretty big deal.
- 6:02Oh, definitely proud of how far we've come.
- 6:05It's that's what makes it neat, you know to win a race at
- 6:08Williams Grove last weekend. You know we have some friends
- 6:12and family sponsors that were traveling and go to certain
- 6:15parts of the country, the bigger events and and we've been you
- 6:19know fortunate to win some of those in the past or a lot of
- 6:22those people have been there but not very many or they all in one
- 6:27spot at one time so. And we usually have that when we
- 6:30go to Williams Grove. So it always it was kind of a it
- 6:35made it tough when you go back to your home track and you you
- 6:38struggle when you run 15th or whatever like that.
- 6:40But to have them all in one spot and you know, they know the
- 6:44story, they know how we started, how tough it was.
- 6:47You know the the 10-11 years on the road and and what it started
- 6:51out as to, you know, basically have no sponsors to driving.
- 6:57C&D, rigging everybody that's helped us out and we have
- 6:59Federated Auto Parts and just how it's how it's grown and
- 7:03gotten bigger and bigger over the years.
- 7:05So those people understand that, they know that and that's what
- 7:09makes it so much more special. Well, I guess it's time to get
- 7:13to the meat and potatoes. You know, the fans that tune
- 7:16into Kenny conversation, they want to know what it's like.
- 7:20So we're going to, we're going to start off with, we're going
- 7:24to have Charlie, our producer, drop that picture right here
- 7:28that really ricocheted throughout the racing world of
- 7:32how shark racing started. That is your race team.
- 7:35Who owns shark racing? That's right.
- 7:39I'd rather you say it than me. So there's that picture out
- 7:43there when you won $1,000,000 after winning El Dora, and we'll
- 7:47get in depth on that and Williams Grove.
- 7:50But can you tell us a little bit about this picture where just
- 7:54shows when Shark Racing first starts?
- 7:56It's just a normal passenger car towing.
- 8:00What is thought of is the first Sprint car.
- 8:03Is this picture true? Is it accurate?
- 8:06Yeah. So I think you're talking about
- 8:07as a Subaru pulling. That's it.
- 8:10That's it. And so I don't believe that was
- 8:14actually me. That was Jacob.
- 8:17And so when I first started we were running through limited
- 8:19Sprint cars here in Pennsylvania.
- 8:21It would have been around 2910, eleven area, and that photo is
- 8:26probably from about 2010. But we had one trailer as a lot
- 8:33of people know is the years when we build our own own trailer to
- 8:37save money. It ended up costing us about
- 8:38$40,000 total. But we put both cars
- 8:42back-to-back to run the World About All tour and Jacob still
- 8:45uses that trailer. No, he uses it still.
- 8:49Yeah, it's only we did it 2017, we we built that trailer and it
- 8:55does everything that needs to do.
- 8:56It might not be all, you know, flashy cabinets and stuff
- 8:59inside, but it does you know, the best job you need to run the
- 9:03World of Outlaw Tour. And my grandpa was talking about
- 9:07doing another one for ourselves, for our race team.
- 9:10But whether that happens or not, I'm not sure.
- 9:12But. To go back to the the Subaru on
- 9:15the open trailer, that would have been about 2010 and we had
- 9:21an old Kodiak toter home that my grandfather used to use that he
- 9:26bought it back from a friend of his.
- 9:27I believe it was Kevin Higgins and it was so it was like 1985.
- 9:33You know, Kodiak, that I'm sure those guys could share many
- 9:38stories of what you different race tracks that they took that
- 9:41thing to. But it pulled up a smaller
- 9:45enclosed trailer that my race car was in.
- 9:48And when Jacob started racing, you know we we still just use
- 9:53that one trailer. So to get Jake to the racetrack,
- 9:56they pulled it around with the Subaru and the the open trailer.
- 9:59So definitely come a long way. Yeah.
- 10:02So that's what we did. We painted the picture just now.
- 10:05I grew up on AM, AM radio listening to my Cardinals.
- 10:09You know you had to paint the picture and so so we know that
- 10:12you got a wonderful family. We know that your story right
- 10:16now this month is what we call rags to riches up.
- 10:19I'm sure you aren't rags by any means but let's talk about it
- 10:22now. So Tony Stewart decides to pay
- 10:26$1,000,000. Now this is, this is something
- 10:29out of fantasyland. It's not real, right?
- 10:31Us racers. Listen, I ate baloney and you
- 10:35know, Brown swagger and cheese and mayonnaise and my brother
- 10:39Rusty say go in there and make us some sandwiches.
- 10:41And we all grew up with, you know, smelling like grease and
- 10:45and we couldn't fathom $1,000,000.
- 10:48But my friend Logan, look at you.
- 10:51You go to Eldor, Tony Stewart says I'm going to pay $1,000,000
- 10:56and you win, you win $1,000,000. We'll get to the race in a
- 11:02minute, but what is it like to win $1,000,000 if you have to
- 11:08check? Tell me about all this I was.
- 11:10Going to say I don't, you know, people keep asking what's it you
- 11:12know, what's that like? I guess until the money hits
- 11:17your bank account or however that works, it's hard to say
- 11:20because I I don't feel any different.
- 11:23You know that it we have the, you know, we know the magnitude
- 11:28of the race and you know how big it was.
- 11:31We haven't actually got a check or anything like that yet, so.
- 11:36That part hasn't hit him yet. But to just that, you know, a
- 11:41race that's been building up since PRI that we've talked
- 11:44about, you know, we we thought, you know, there's rumors flying
- 11:48that, you know, a racetrack's going to pay $1,000,000 to win.
- 11:52It wasn't really sure which racetrack for a minute.
- 11:55And you know, we all thought it was probably going to be Eldora.
- 12:00There's a few other ones talking about it, but Tony and his team.
- 12:05You know, I, you know Tony, you know he loves Sprint cars.
- 12:08He's going to want to, you know put that type of money out there
- 12:11for you know, have a big pain, you know, Sprint car race.
- 12:15So it's something that's been building since PRI when it was
- 12:19announced. But you know, trying to focus on
- 12:23your year and and all the other races that we have going on, we
- 12:26have a lot of big races this year.
- 12:28You know, we race for $250,000. A few weeks ago he used to
- 12:31Speedway Todd Queering and his group are doing a lot for Sprint
- 12:36car racing growing the sport that that facility and others
- 12:39with Jackson. But we have a lot of big race
- 12:43this year and it just it just keeps growing.
- 12:45But that million to win is something that's kind of been in
- 12:48the back of everybody's head all year and you know I I knew we
- 12:53would have a great shot at it. It's Eldora has been good to me.
- 12:56I think we've won five or six races there now.
- 13:01And we won there in May. So I knew that we would, coming
- 13:06back in July, we were going to have a great shot at it.
- 13:08But to go out and actually actually do it and put it all
- 13:11together and just have the the two days that we had to to make
- 13:15it happen, it was unbelievable. So there are a lot of race
- 13:19tracks that you and I race at. You know, there's a scoreboard
- 13:23somewhere and you know, you got your stick man or you kind of
- 13:27know what's up. And let's be clear, you were
- 13:31dominant. You had no competition.
- 13:33I mean, obviously your ability is unbelievable and you got to
- 13:36hit your marks. You were riding high.
- 13:39You were not afraid to die. Can he do it?
- 13:41Jack Hewitt. I mean, downer in turn.
- 13:43One. You were headed to the wall,
- 13:45turning it every lap. I was scared for you.
- 13:48So tell me about those last five laps.
- 13:51Could you see how many laps there were left?
- 13:55I think the last corner, you might have gave yourself a
- 13:57little more room, I don't know. But I was.
- 14:00I was watching every lap. I'm like he, he ain't going to
- 14:02chance this last corner. Tell me about those last five
- 14:05laps. So I'd say more, I'd, I'd take
- 14:09you back a little bit, probably about 15 to go.
- 14:12I'd say the 1st 20 laps went by really quick and so we had a
- 14:18break there at 20 laps, 3030 laps to go.
- 14:22We fueled the cars back up and we had some drama right there.
- 14:25So we had, you know. The guys were changing gears,
- 14:31rear ends off full of grease, bringing the Jack out on the
- 14:34racetrack. And for people that don't know
- 14:36Eldora, it's got a lot of banking to it.
- 14:39And car actually fell off the Jack stand during the The guys
- 14:47did a great job. They stayed very calm, you know,
- 14:50Everybody stayed very calm, you know, picked the car back up,
- 14:53put it on the Jack stand, got the fuel in it.
- 14:58And got back on again. But to take you back to to 15
- 15:01laps to go, I'd say more around then.
- 15:05You know when you're leading a race like that, especially once
- 15:07you start to get to that point and knowing it has to get sort
- 15:10of close to the end. I was just waiting to see the
- 15:13white flag, probably about 15 laps to go, thinking man, if
- 15:16they got throw it sometime soon, yeah, it just lasts forever.
- 15:20Yeah, it feels like forever, but.
- 15:25Right around that I thought maybe you can glance at the
- 15:28scoreboard because you can see Eldora's scoreboard going down
- 15:31the front stretch. You can look into Turn 2 and see
- 15:34the scoreboard. But I sort of did that real
- 15:37quick and I felt like it took my focus off what I was doing and
- 15:42and where I needed to hit my Marks and.
- 15:47I told myself right then I thought, you know, maybe it's
- 15:50and I actually didn't see how many laps were to go.
- 15:52I didn't couldn't, you know, I didn't find the scoreboard as
- 15:54quick as I needed to. But I thought, you know, I work
- 15:58out every day and try to be the best in shape that I can.
- 16:02I know I have a great car, we're in a good spot.
- 16:05If I just put my head down and run the best laps that I can
- 16:08run, it's going to be very hard for somebody to catch it.
- 16:11So I just tried to run that car as hard as I could the best I
- 16:16could. And stay focused until I saw a
- 16:19checkered flag. And with a I didn't see a 2 to
- 16:23go, but I did see the white flag and I did.
- 16:26I had no trouble getting around the lap cars before that.
- 16:29I felt like it when I got to him.
- 16:30They didn't really slow up my momentum at all.
- 16:32I was able to get to their rear bumper, make a move on in the
- 16:36next corner to where it didn't really slow down my momentum
- 16:39but. When I caught got the white
- 16:42flag, there was two lap cars in front of me and they're both
- 16:45running my line, both right in front of me.
- 16:48And that night the highline at Eldora was definitely the the
- 16:51fastest way to go. And I didn't want to peel off
- 16:56and slide them or drive through the bottom of the racetrack cuz
- 17:00I didn't know how close somebody was behind us.
- 17:03You know, we, like you said, we don't have.
- 17:05People throwing up signs to us or you know, somebody in our ear
- 17:09saying hey you have, you know, 3 second lead which we had.
- 17:12So I didn't know if Carson or whoever was.
- 17:15Let me ask you right there. Are there no?
- 17:18Are there no sticks? In world of Outlaw Sprint car
- 17:21racing, do you get no signals? No, I don't believe we're
- 17:24actually allowed to. Yeah.
- 17:27Illegal for you guys, OK? So it's illegal, but I don't
- 17:31know if you could actually see him even if you were.
- 17:32We're going so fast, but with the wing.
- 17:34Yeah, yeah, it's you're carrying a lot of speed and like I said,
- 17:38just to even look at the scoreboard, that big gigantic
- 17:41scoreboard, I felt like it was taking my, you know, taking my
- 17:45focus away too much. So.
- 17:48But I followed both those guys into the corner and for people
- 17:52that don't know Sprint car race and when you have that big, you
- 17:55know 5 by 5 wing on top of there.
- 17:58It's creating a lot of downforce and when you get behind
- 18:01somebody, what they call dirty air, it takes all that, all that
- 18:06downforce off your wing. It actually almost feels like
- 18:09it's picking the left rear of the car up off the ground and
- 18:12it's make. That's why when I followed the
- 18:15car into the corner, it actually, it didn't want to
- 18:17turn. It was getting tight.
- 18:18It was trying to get into the wall.
- 18:21And I had to jam on the brakes and get the car to turn left
- 18:25down, back across the racetrack and 1:00 and 2:00, is that what
- 18:28you did tag the wall a little bit going into one, didn't you?
- 18:31Or not. I got tight in the cushion.
- 18:33Whether it was the wall, definitely it was.
- 18:37It was the scary scenario and it was more than what I wanted to
- 18:41be. But I was able to drive down
- 18:45across the racetrack. I don't know if I passed one of
- 18:49the two cars. But I told myself going into
- 18:52three and four, that I was taking a conservative role.
- 18:55I was driving across the racetrack and if somebody, yeah,
- 18:59somebody was close to me, they were going to have to drive
- 19:02around the outside of me, which would have been a pretty tough
- 19:04task in itself. So I took the, took the safe
- 19:08route, went through the middle of the racetrack and was able to
- 19:11see the checkered flag at that moment.
- 19:13You know, this reminds me of the Chili Bowl.
- 19:15You know where I'm going with this About three years ago, Kyle
- 19:18Larson's leading the race. He's got to put his left front
- 19:21on the berm every lap. There's only that's the only
- 19:24grip there and he's got Christopher Bell breathing down
- 19:27his neck. And, you know, I really admired
- 19:31Kyle Larson after the race because at that time it was like
- 19:35the only race he wanted to win. You know, it was almost as big
- 19:38as any NASCAR race. And he admitted in his, you
- 19:42know, interview after the Chili Bowl that he looked up at the
- 19:45big screen and lost his focus going into one.
- 19:48So I think any young kid listening to you right now, I've
- 19:54been there before too, where you're, you try to take a little
- 19:56shortcut. You're like, how many go, you
- 19:58know, you catch yourself messing up and you're like, that's not
- 20:02the way to do it. And I really appreciate you
- 20:05telling that story because I know a lot of, you know, race
- 20:08car drivers are listening to you right now.
- 20:10So you win the $1,000,000, you're good at, El Dora.
- 20:18And what is this, the month of July And and here you go now
- 20:24you're not a one hit wonder you go to quite possibly besides
- 20:31Knoxville and Eldora Williams Grove.
- 20:34I mean, I just like saying that Williams Grove, are you, do you
- 20:41consider yourself Pennsylvania posse?
- 20:45So I like the term. I, some fans call us PA Outlaws
- 20:49because I'm I'm proud of where I come from.
- 20:52Proud of yeah, it's it kind of stuck somewhere in the middle
- 20:55there. You know they took the the
- 20:57Morgan Cup Friday. They the Outlaws took that back
- 21:00in North Carolina. So they claimed it.
- 21:02But I'm proud of both. I'm proud to to to be an outlaw.
- 21:06You know, I I feel like the Outlaws are the best of the best
- 21:09as far as Sprint car racing they are.
- 21:11And yeah without a doubt so and that's where I always wanted to
- 21:15be. I love Sprint car racing so I as
- 21:17a kid I wanted to be racing with the best of the best the biggest
- 21:20races and and the outlaws are where that's at so but to to
- 21:25grow up in a you know an area of Sprint car racing in central PA
- 21:31that you have Waynes Grove and and Lincoln Speedway and Port
- 21:36Royal and all the work that they've done to make that as as
- 21:38good as it is, you know I'm just.
- 21:41You know I I just think that's awesome that the passion that
- 21:44the PA fans have and to grow up in this area and to learn how to
- 21:48drive a Sprint car with you know greats like Greg Hodnett and
- 21:52Lance the Weiss. And you know who those big name
- 21:57guys that were around here that that form you know Sprint car
- 22:00racing and Fred Raymer when I first started you know one of my
- 22:03first races he beat the Outlaws and Stevie Smith.
- 22:06You know all those guys that. And and that's one reason I'm,
- 22:09you know, I kind of like being you know in the middle as far as
- 22:12that goes. You know Stevie Smith with Smith
- 22:14Titanium is is one of our, you know, he has a lot to do with
- 22:18shark racing and all his components.
- 22:20There's a lot legendary name, Legendary.
- 22:22Legend, but as a kid you know he was from New Oxford.
- 22:26It's right up the road from where I live.
- 22:29And he raced with the Outlaws for a long time and he was
- 22:32always one of my favorites. So as a as a kid you know, and
- 22:35now as a race car driver, I always thought that'd be cool
- 22:38if, you know, kids looked at me the same way, you know, as the
- 22:41PA hometown outlaw and you know, I'm proud of that.
- 22:45So you you win Eldora, you win $1,000,000, you basically go
- 22:50home to Williams Grove. You're running second to Brad.
- 22:56Sweet. I feel like you and Brad have
- 22:57been glued to each other here lately.
- 22:59You really, you. You've really.
- 23:01I've followed everything. You know, you run 1-2 at the
- 23:04Million Dollar Race, then here you are.
- 23:08This is last week. Brad's leading the race at
- 23:11Williams Grove. Your guys, you're coming to the
- 23:14checker and you get by him to win in front of your people.
- 23:20I mean it's almost bigger than $1,000,000 because your your
- 23:23whole life, my whole life. I mean like hell, if I just win
- 23:27with my grandkids there, it's like bigger than big.
- 23:30So take me through the last half lap or last lap at Williams
- 23:36Grove and then getting out of the car and there the family is.
- 23:41Tell me about this huge win at Williams Grove with the World of
- 23:44Outlaws. Brad and I both in the past I'd
- 23:51say five years we've we've both struggled at Williams Group for
- 23:55whatever reason. That seemed to be one track that
- 23:59you know say we're running well in points and and wanted to be
- 24:02consistent. Obviously you have to but that
- 24:06was one that I feel like you know Brad would go there, he'd
- 24:08kind of struggle, our team would struggle.
- 24:11Now the past few times that we've been there, we've both
- 24:14been been running up front, so. I feel like we both kind of
- 24:18figured something out, got our cars where they need to be or
- 24:21both qualifying while starting up front.
- 24:25But I was happy with running. I mean, you never happy with
- 24:29running second. It's OK.
- 24:31I totally get it. I get it.
- 24:33At that, at that point, felt like, you know, we're going to
- 24:36run second. It's a good run.
- 24:40You know, like I said, the place has been tough to me.
- 24:42You know, if we could just hang on, get a podium, finish, you
- 24:46know, we'll try again tomorrow. But I followed Brad the whole
- 24:51race. We ran the top of the race track
- 24:53and we got to some lap cars. They held me up a little bit
- 24:57longer than than what I would have liked.
- 24:59I didn't get by them as quick as I needed to and I'd say I look,
- 25:04I did look up at the scoreboard at that point.
- 25:06It's a little easier at Williams Square to do and I saw, you
- 25:09know, that track like the back of your hand.
- 25:11Yeah, there's 20 laps in, there's only a 25 lap race.
- 25:14So at that point, I thought, I'm just going to pull the wing back
- 25:18and try to move around the race track and see if I can find
- 25:21something. Because you know, what am I?
- 25:22Where is that wing adjustment in your car, Logan?
- 25:25Where what? What hand do you use?
- 25:27How do you do that? It's it's right to the the left
- 25:30of the steering wheel. Right underneath the steering
- 25:33wheel you have your on and off fuel switch.
- 25:37Fuel lever. And then to the to the left of
- 25:39the steering wheel is your hydraulic wing cylinder.
- 25:41So it's easy, you know, to just grab that quick yank on it and
- 25:47especially going back where it'll go back a lot quicker than
- 25:52what it goes forward. So if you're going down a big
- 25:54long straighter like Williams Grove, it's got all that
- 25:55pressure on it. You yank it quick and that that
- 25:58wing will go back. So that's interesting.
- 26:02You can. I basically pull it the whole
- 26:04way back. Tried to see if I could find
- 26:05somewhere else on the racetrack and Brad, you know, I was.
- 26:11They say 2, two seconds behind them the last two laps or
- 26:14something like that. And when we went into one and
- 26:18two for the final time, I think he still had a second and a
- 26:20half. But I think he got up in the
- 26:23cushion, got up the higher side of the racetrack and whether you
- 26:27know, something was going wrong with his car at that point.
- 26:30But he seemed like he really sat still and I felt we gained, you
- 26:34know, 678 car lengths and you did just one friend too.
- 26:38So really called up to him. And then I was almost on his
- 26:43bumper going down the backstretch.
- 26:45And when we went to go into Turn 3 just a few weeks ago at at
- 26:48Cedar Lake Speedway in Wisconsin, we had the same
- 26:53similar scenario. I was on his bumper.
- 26:55He kind of blocked me going into three and four in the bottom.
- 26:58You know the perfect move that you need to do as as a leader
- 27:01and I tried to run around the outside just like we did on
- 27:04Friday but we came up short finished second to Brad and he
- 27:08got the win. But at Williams Grove, you know
- 27:12he went to the bottom enter in three and I knew they just he
- 27:16was going to do that just because of weeks prior and I ran
- 27:20the top of the racetrack this time.
- 27:22And when when we came out of four, he's, you know, it's
- 27:25probably the same problem that he had coming out of two.
- 27:27His car just really sat still and I could see his tires
- 27:30spinning, you know, dust is flying off the rear of the car
- 27:34and I just got a huge run off of four.
- 27:37I felt like I was 10 mile an hour faster than him at that
- 27:40point and just tried to stay a little higher on the racetrack.
- 27:45And I knew when he came up the corner he was going to take it
- 27:47to the outside wall and I just waited.
- 27:50Until I got almost to his bumper to kind of turn the car left and
- 27:54try to just get underneath of him.
- 27:56And when we got to the line, it felt like we were pretty, you
- 27:59know, equal weather, you know, you never know where the
- 28:02transponder loop is either. It can be, you know, right
- 28:04before the flag stand, at the flag stand, past the flag stand.
- 28:08And I knew if if it was before the flag stand, he probably won.
- 28:13But if it was at the flag stand or just past it, then we did.
- 28:16So it wasn't. So I came around Turn 2.
- 28:20Looked at the scoreboard and saw the one on the board that that I
- 28:23knew we won. So I was pretty excited at that
- 28:25point just because it's took taking so long to win at that
- 28:29place. The PA fans were awesome.
- 28:33Cheering, yelling. Their boy.
- 28:37Making us feel good, I felt like we won the million all over
- 28:39again. Really is a 15,000 to win race.
- 28:43But man, it just it felt good to to finally win one at him in
- 28:47front of all your all those fans.
- 28:50Friends and family that I knew were there and let me interrupt
- 28:53you. One minute I heard something and
- 28:55I listened intently. You said you learned something
- 28:58at Cedar Lake and I think that's interesting.
- 29:01You know you you followed Brad at Cedar Lake.
- 29:04You kind of knew his tendencies. Cedar Lake I haven't wrote down
- 29:08here 2016 was. Was Cedar Lake your very first
- 29:12world of Outlaw win? Very first win in 2000.
- 29:17We haven't. We haven't won there since then,
- 29:18but that was our very first win in 2016.
- 29:22So now you Fast forward and you you think about that because you
- 29:25know his tendencies, man. I'll tell you what this is.
- 29:29There should be a short story, a movie made of this this last
- 29:33month with you Eldora. You learn a lot at Cedar Lake
- 29:37because you he Brad remind you of his tendencies.
- 29:40You remember that going into the Turn 3 at Williams Grove?
- 29:44OK, so now you win the race, OKI just wanted to talk about Cedar
- 29:48Lake for a minute. So now you win the race.
- 29:51OK, take me through Victory Lane.
- 29:55Well, I'd say when we pull across the scales after, you
- 29:58know, you pull off the racetrack and turn 2:00, you got to scale
- 30:01outside the racetrack. So our teams over there, you
- 30:04know, they're hooting holler and fist pumping class and there's a
- 30:10cool. So I think we actually posted to
- 30:12our social media. There's a GoPro right by my head
- 30:16that you can see my excitement, but you can, as we pull back out
- 30:20on the racetrack to go around, you know you have the infield
- 30:24fans, beer hills up here on the right.
- 30:27They're all cheering. So just really cool feeling.
- 30:31And when we get to Victory Lane, man.
- 30:33And for for Sprint Car fans or people that don't know Sprint
- 30:36Cars, our our biggest race at Williams Grove comes in end of
- 30:39September. Beginning October, it's Williams
- 30:41Grove National Open. And you know, this being a
- 30:4515,000 win race, Williams the national open 75.
- 30:49But anyways, pulling around Turn 4 to to Victory Lane on the
- 30:53front stretch, there was probably a couple 100 people on
- 30:58the front stretch for us to pull in the Victory Lane and I felt
- 31:01like we just won the national open or something.
- 31:03So it's, you know, like I said, a couple 100 people sitting
- 31:07there, you get the Victory Lane. They're they're shooting the
- 31:10confetti. You know, friends, family, I
- 31:14can't give hugs fast enough, you know.
- 31:18You know, I'm getting punched in the arm by some, some family
- 31:21members hugged by other ones. I'm I'm emotional for you right
- 31:25now because I I feel it. I feel.
- 31:29It was but just the, the, the then to get on top of the wing
- 31:34and you know, look at the crowd and see how happy they are.
- 31:41Yeah, definitely. A really cool feeling you didn't
- 31:43practice on that wing here lately.
- 31:45Yeah, we've got a few chances to get up there, that's for sure.
- 31:49And it's, you know, you got to take them when you can get them
- 31:52because this racing thing, it's, it's tough.
- 31:54We've been, you know, my teammates down a little bit
- 31:57right now, but I can see, you know, I've been in that
- 32:00position. I know what it feels like to
- 32:01just get your butt kicked all the time, and even last year you
- 32:05know we won one race up until a couple weeks from now.
- 32:09And it's it's tough. You know you're racing with the
- 32:12best of the best. Like you said, Brad is a four
- 32:14time word of outlaw champion wins.
- 32:17You know, sometimes double digit races in one year, you know him,
- 32:21David Carson. They're so good on a weekly
- 32:25basis at every racetrack. So when you can put your car in
- 32:29Victory Lane and you're able to win races like that, it it
- 32:32definitely is almost feels like a big weight off your shoulders
- 32:36that you can get that done. But they're definitely the best
- 32:40of the best and you know, I have a high level respect for all of
- 32:43them, for what they do. I think that's a good attitude.
- 32:46We talked to Donnie Shots last week on Kenny Conversation and
- 32:51here we all know that, you know, as of right now, Steve Kinzer is
- 32:54the greatest with the World of Outlaws and probably Donnie
- 32:57Shots. And Donnie is devastated right
- 33:00now. Even though he he won a big race
- 33:02at El Dora this year, he feels like he's not where he needs to
- 33:07be. I mean, this is the life we live
- 33:11as dirt racers. We're we're dealing with
- 33:13different track surfaces every night and this and that.
- 33:17It it, it is feast or famine, don't you think?
- 33:22It is. That's how you know, Donnie.
- 33:24Like you said, he just won the King's Royal.
- 33:27But when I first. You know, my first couple of
- 33:29years racing with the World of Outlaws, Donnie was winning
- 33:323035. So I I that's when you have,
- 33:37it's devastated right now. Yeah.
- 33:40When you're when you're used to doing that or when you're you
- 33:42know what that feels like, yeah, your expectations are high and
- 33:45I've I've been around long enough to you know, you know
- 33:49just with the small amount of success that we've had that.
- 33:52The expectations don't come back down every year.
- 33:55They get higher and higher and higher and you're expected to do
- 33:58more. Everybody around you expects to
- 34:00do better. Doesn't always work like that
- 34:02though. It's it's part of racing.
- 34:05But yeah, Donnie is definitely, he's awesome like that.
- 34:10As far as the my respect for a driver like that, that as good
- 34:14as he is and how smart he is on the racetrack and clean at the
- 34:17same time, definitely, you know. One of the best race car drivers
- 34:22I was raced with no doubt. I do also have a very high
- 34:26respect for the crew chiefs in in our sport for for Jacob and I
- 34:31that have more of a hands on role than I'd say some other
- 34:36drivers do. But it's you know the guys like
- 34:40Phillip Deets on the 41 car, you know Ricky Warner on Rico's car,
- 34:46you know Cody Jacobs with David Gravel.
- 34:48They're very smart. As far as knowing what the race
- 34:52tracks call for, you know the drivers get the, you know, the
- 34:55fun job. They get to get in and drive the
- 34:56things and if it you know, sometimes it makes them, you
- 34:59know, look really good. Sometimes it can make them look
- 35:01bad, as Kenny Schrader says, Schrader says, Listen, we're all
- 35:05pretty good, you know? And as my brother Rusty says,
- 35:08get your head in the carburetor. And as Dale Earnhardt taught me,
- 35:12you know, a slow horse does not win races.
- 35:15So I like it that you're giving a shout out to the crew Cheese.
- 35:20You know what makes the car fast?
- 35:24Yeah, I mean, sometimes I'll know within a few laps we make
- 35:28some changes that, you know, we're unsure of.
- 35:30Sometimes it works out great. You know, we'll make some
- 35:32changes that we're unsure of and you know, I'd run the 1st 3
- 35:35laps. I mean, man, you know, I have a
- 35:36great shot. This your eyeballs are like,
- 35:39damn, this is gay. I can drive.
- 35:43But it can also have the opposite effect.
- 35:46Or you run one or two laps and like, man, this is going to be a
- 35:49long race. I'm going to going to take
- 35:52everything I have just to stay where I'm at just to get a top
- 35:55ten or you know say we're starting 10th or 11th, just that
- 35:58in which we had the same, you know that that happened on
- 36:01Saturday we started 9th and finished 11th and it it takes a
- 36:05few laps to to be like you know I'm going to have to race this
- 36:09thing hard just to stay where I'm at.
- 36:11So, but I do have a high level respect for those crew chiefs
- 36:15that they can, you know, mine's a little bit different.
- 36:19I can. I go run a couple laps in a heat
- 36:22race and I can say, well, it kind of felt like this.
- 36:25Would you guys think and make you know, changes accordingly?
- 36:28This guys, you know, they sit in the infield and watch their car
- 36:32go around the race track and come back and make those
- 36:35changes. Or you know maybe they're just
- 36:37very good with physics or or whatever but they no high level
- 36:42respect for for how what they do I want.
- 36:46I got a couple a couple more things.
- 36:48But I want to touch on this. I I I see how the sport has
- 36:51changed myself. I'm going to be 60 years old
- 36:56August 23rd and you know, listen I've watched my dad, my grandma,
- 37:02my grandpa, you know, all have you know cardiovascular
- 37:06problems. They've died and and I'm like,
- 37:09I'm, I'm going to eat salmon and chicken and I'm going to you
- 37:13know, I would do all my own work, Logan, on my race car and
- 37:16I'm in good shape. Here's where I'm going with
- 37:19this. When I talked to Donnie Shots
- 37:21last week and when I talked to Brad Sweet before Donnie, both
- 37:28of them brought up what you said.
- 37:30You said you work out. Donnie said that his neck is so
- 37:35strong. I'm hearing more and more of you
- 37:40world of outlaw racers talking about working out how strong you
- 37:45are. You hear the Formula One guys
- 37:48that race in a different country every other week.
- 37:52This is the new world we live in.
- 37:54I mean you're you're you say you're working out and you focus
- 37:58level. Tell me about everybody working
- 38:01out with, you know, to be the best they can be.
- 38:05Yeah, my teammate. Both of us, Jacob and I, both.
- 38:08We both try to, you know, we'll go on runs together.
- 38:12We might go to the gym or do whatever.
- 38:14I know Brad works out. I've seen him at my local YMCA
- 38:17when we're in town and run into him there.
- 38:20You know, I remember seeing Donnie, you know, he he works
- 38:23out all the time. He used to be a little bit
- 38:24bigger and lost some weight. And I know he said he felt feels
- 38:27way better in a race car, Donnie says.
- 38:29He's got the strongest neck in all of the world.
- 38:33Probably does. Hey, I think when he started
- 38:36working out is when he started winning those those 30 races a
- 38:39year. So he was, but no, I think all
- 38:44you know, all over in general, I think it makes me feel better in
- 38:47a race car. You know when I first started
- 38:48there were some races where I felt like I was getting tired
- 38:52and not totally tired where you can't even hang on to the car.
- 38:56But you're the problem is your focus is you know.
- 39:01Why am I breathing heavy? You know, I'm my arms are kind
- 39:04of worn out and you're thinking about how you're tired instead
- 39:08of being focused on the racetrack and how you're going
- 39:11to, you know, attack the car in front of you, you know, hitting
- 39:15your Marks and that's where your focus should be.
- 39:17So it you know. All in all, I think working
- 39:24out's just good to to keep you sharp up here.
- 39:26Just the just, you know, just to keep you in shape and, you know,
- 39:29keep you mentally sharp. You know, from your daytoday
- 39:34tasks, you wake up in the morning, you go for a run and
- 39:37you workout. You know you already completed
- 39:40one of your tasks for the day and it's just you know, going
- 39:42through the motions. My dad was a Marine.
- 39:45He's he taught me at a young age.
- 39:47You know when I didn't pick up my room or something and it was
- 39:5020 push ups or whatever makes sense.
- 39:54So you're stout. Thanks.
- 39:57But yeah, that's so I think part of that I got from from him.
- 40:01And we'll still work out in the winter time.
- 40:03He's he's in his later 50s but we'll we'll work out together go
- 40:07to the local YMCA or actually today I went for a run and he
- 40:11rode his bicycle next to me. So yeah, I definitely got that
- 40:16from him. I think it's there's no
- 40:18disadvantage to racing as far as you know, being in shape, it's,
- 40:23it's not going to hurt you. I can tell you for any young kid
- 40:27you know it's, it's definitely not going to hurt you.
- 40:29There's no disadvantages to it. So As for myself, I feel like
- 40:34when I first started, it's at any advantage that you can get.
- 40:37Like I said, these are the best drivers, the best teams in the
- 40:40country, in the world really. And if you have any type of
- 40:44advantage that you have at your exposure, you should take it.
- 40:48So as far as working out and being in shape, that's just you
- 40:52know one of those advantages. Logan, I I love talking to you.
- 40:56We're already at 42 minutes. So let's let's end it like this
- 41:00my friend. This is just going to be fun for
- 41:02me. I I hear both things from you.
- 41:05I know $1,000,000 is life changing in in some ways.
- 41:11But also in listen to you about, you know Williams girl, the win
- 41:17at Williams girl. So let's end like this.
- 41:19We we got $1,000,000. At Eldora, where you've already
- 41:22won a lot but this one paid a million and and and you finally
- 41:28won Williams Grove in front of your family.
- 41:32You know what I'm saying it. It almost sounds to me like
- 41:35you're more excited about Williams Grove.
- 41:37And you know, we both grew up as children, right?
- 41:40Racers just just break. Let's end the show like this.
- 41:45Break both weekends down for me. Yeah.
- 41:49So I actually got asked that by a fan this past weekend and I
- 41:52didn't know how to answer it because I said there's a PA fan.
- 41:56Obviously we're at Williams Grove still, but they said, hey,
- 42:00if you put money aside and money wasn't part of it, which one
- 42:03was? Which one meant more to you?
- 42:06And I thought, man, that's tough.
- 42:08Like I feel like I know what I want to answer.
- 42:10But you know the millions just so life changing like I I've
- 42:15told people in the past you know I just want to race for a
- 42:18living. I just want to be a professional
- 42:20race car driver be able to do what I love to do And if money
- 42:24comes along with it and I'm able to you know be successful enough
- 42:27that I can race my whole career and and you know do all the
- 42:31things that we got to do is you know as far as people to take
- 42:34care of our family or whatever you know that's what I want.
- 42:37But definitely you know when $1,000,000 that's life changing
- 42:40for myself as a as a Sprint car driver to and you be able to put
- 42:45that away or do whatever with it.
- 42:48Like I said, we're trying to build a shop house.
- 42:51So that's, you know, that's where probably a lot of that's
- 42:53going. People have asked me that, but
- 42:55so do you. Let me get nosy do do you make
- 42:5850% too, or are you a little less because you're family?
- 43:02When I win I get 50%. I love you.
- 43:07Thank you. So you know when you when you
- 43:10win, it gets. $500,000 maybe by by garage trying to build a shop
- 43:19house not too far from ours right now so but the win at
- 43:24Williams Grove to to win on the last lap with you know, it
- 43:27wasn't a nobody either. Like you said, Brad Sweet is,
- 43:31you know up there at the best of the best.
- 43:34So to beat somebody like him at her home track with all our
- 43:38friends and family there, man, that was definitely a very
- 43:40memorable one. But I I hate to put one above
- 43:45the other. Yeah, well, well, Logan, my eyes
- 43:47are watering a little bit for you because I I I just relate
- 43:51with you. I really have enjoyed talking to
- 43:53you. Congratulations.
- 43:55Now listen, we all know, we all know the peaks and valleys, we
- 43:58get all that. But you know, it's it's like.
- 44:02The races that I've won on asphalt, my crew member goes
- 44:05over and checks the right rear tire.
- 44:07I'm like, we'll worry about that tire later.
- 44:10Right now we just want a big race.
- 44:12So take it easy on yourself. I know, I know it's a long World
- 44:16of Outlaws season. I know you're going to win.
- 44:18You're going to lose. But buddy, you got it going on
- 44:22right now. You're you're the you're the
- 44:24biggest story in the World of Outlaws.
- 44:26And congratulations. Thank you, Kenny.
- 44:29Thanks for thinking of me having me on your show.
- 44:31It's great to great to talk to you.
- 44:33We have to share a story, You know, kind of you're you're a
- 44:37little bit rags or riches financially.
- 44:41You did not let money you know, stunt your growth.
- 44:45Now you got a million and. Now you'd be able to pack some
- 44:48wheel bearings and all right, everybody will listen.
- 44:53That's the legendary already at 30 years old, Logan Shoe Art won
- 44:57$1,000,000 and then backed it up with a huge win at Williams
- 45:01Grove. So remember, we are on iTunes,
- 45:05Spotify. We're in podcast forms,
- 45:08Remember, please like and subscribe.
- 45:10We want to hear what you think about Logan's big wins lately.
- 45:13And Logan, thank you, buddy. Thanks, Kenny.
- 45:17Appreciate it. Thanks again.
- 45:19See you later everyone.
