- Lucas: Hey there. Welcome back to Learn Finnish with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. It is so good to be back with you both today. Lucas: It really is. We have been talking about places a lot lately, right? Luna: Yeah. Last time we talked about rooms. The bedroom, the kitchen, the bathroom. Lucas: Exactly. And before that, we talked about being inside or outside generally. Luna: Right. Sisällä and Ulkona. But today we want to get more specific. Lucas: Yes. Where exactly are things? Let's start with a very common word. Luna: Okay. Is it 'Sisällä'? Lucas: That is it. Sisällä. It means 'inside' or 'indoors'. Luna: Sisällä. Okay. Let me try that again. Sisällä. Lucas: Perfect. Nice and clear. Sisällä. It is like saying 'in here'. Luna: Got it. So if I am in my house, I am sisällä. Lucas: Correct. Now, what is the opposite? Luna: Is it 'Ulkona'? Lucas: Yes. Ulkona. It means 'outside' or 'outdoors'. Luna: Ulkona. Okay. Ulkona. That sounds nice. Lucas: It does. U-l-k-o-n-a. Ulkona. Very smooth. Luna: Ulkona. So if I am walking in the snow, I am ulkona. Lucas: Exactly. Now let's bring in some furniture. Remember the table? Luna: Pöytä. Yes. I remember pöytä from earlier episodes. Lucas: Good. Today we want to talk about where things are relative to the table. Luna: Like under it? Or on top of it? Lucas: Yes. First, let's do 'under'. In Finnish, we say 'alla'. Luna: Alla. Like 'ah l la'? Lucas: Yes. Alla. So if something is under the table, we say 'pöydän alla'. Luna: Pöydän alla. Wait. Pöydän. Is that still just 'table'? Lucas: It is related to table. Pöytä becomes pöydän here. Just think of it as 'of the table' or 'the table's'. Luna: Okay. Pöydän alla. Under the table. Let me try. Lucas: Go ahead. Say it slowly. Luna: Pöydän... alla. Pöydän alla. Lucas: You nailed it. Pöydän alla. Very natural. Luna: I love how that flows. Pöydän alla. It feels like one word almost. Lucas: It does. Now, what if the cat is ON TOP of the table? Luna: On top is 'päällä'? Lucas: Yes. Päällä. So on top of the table is 'pöydän päällä'. Luna: Pöydän päällä. Ohh. That is clever. Päällä for on top. Lucas: Exactly. Pöydän päällä. Let's try it together. One, two, three. Luna: Pöydän päällä. Lucas: Great. Pöydän päällä. Now, let's put them together. Luna: So the cat can be pöydän alla OR pöydän päällä? Lucas: Yes. Or even pöydän vieressä, next to the table, but let's stick to our list. Luna: Okay. What about a bed? Or a blanket? Lucas: Good question. How about 'lakanan alla'? Luna: Lakanan alla? Is laka-nan 'sheet'? Lucas: Yes. Lakana is sheet. Lakanan alla means 'under the sheet'. Luna: Lakanan alla. Wow. That sounds cozy. Or scary if you lost your phone. Lucas: Oh no. Losing your phone under the sheet. Lakanan alla. Luna: Lakanan alla. I will try not to lose it there. Let me repeat it. Lucas: Say it. Luna: Lakanan alla. Lakanan alla. Lakanan alla. Lucas: Perfect repetition. Lakanan alla. You are getting really good at this structure. Luna: Thank you. It helps to have a picture in my head. The cat under the table. Lucas: Kissa on pöydän alla. Kissa is cat. Pöydän alla is under the table. Luna: Kissa on pöydän alla. I can say that whole sentence now. Lucas: And the cup on the table? Luna: Muki on pöydän päällä. Muki is mug. Päällä is on top. Lucas: Excellent. Muki on pöydän päällä. You are connecting the dots. Luna: It feels like I am building little scenes in my mind. Lucas: That is exactly what we want. Visualizing the language. Luna: So to recap. Sisällä is inside. Ulkona is outside. Lucas: Yes. And then we add alla for under, and päällä for on top. Luna: And we change the noun slightly. Pöytä becomes pöydän. Lucas: Right. Pöydän alla. Pöydän päällä. Lakanan alla. Luna: This is so useful. I can describe my room right now. Lucas: Try it. Describe where your keys are. Luna: Keys are pöydän päällä. My keys are on the table. Lucas: Or maybe under the sheet? Lakanan alla? Luna: No! Not under the sheet. Never under the sheet. Lucas: Okay. Safe on the table. Pöydän päällä. Luna: Yes. Pöydän päällä. I feel confident now. Lucas: You should be. These are foundational words for any conversation. Luna: I really appreciate how simple you make it. Lucas: We just want you to feel comfortable using them. Luna: Before we go, I wanted to mention something important. Lucas: What is that? Lucas: Pöydän päällä. Luna: Lakanan alla. Lucas: Perfect. You got all of them. Luna: I feel like I can finally find my keys in the dark. Lucas: As long as they are not lakanan alla. Luna: Deal. Pöydän päällä is safer. Lucas: Great job today, Luna. And great job to you too, listener. Luna: Practice these until we chat again. Bye! Lucas: See you next time. Hei hei.
