Transcript
- 0:01Hello and welcome to Off the Shelf Doing Dave the Movie talk
- 0:06show. Reach takes a movie off our
- 0:08shelf, presents it to the other, and discusses it at length.
- 0:19This week we've got coming off of Dave's Shelf once again,
- 0:231997's The Lost World Colon Jurassic Park, also known as.
- 0:29Jurassic Park 2. Jurassic Park 2, we've
- 0:31established already that's that's how we roll.
- 0:33That's it here on Phil and Dave's podcast.
- 0:36So it's another week. It is.
- 0:39I can answer probably the why now good bit, but let's just
- 0:45think about the movie on its own.
- 0:47What are your initial thoughts coming off of what I would say
- 0:52is a pretty great movie last week?
- 0:53Definitely pretty big shoes to fill I would say, and we all
- 0:57know the history of sequels. Yeah, let's dig into that a
- 1:00little. Bit we have to dig in.
- 1:02Spielberg's first. Yes, first time doing a sequel,
- 1:06yeah. There it is.
- 1:07He was asked to do Jaws 2 and in 78.
- 1:11And outright refused. Absolutely said no way.
- 1:13Wasn't having it. And I'm sure, I'm sure got
- 1:16approached with a couple of different projects along the
- 1:18way. I mean technically, I suppose if
- 1:20we really want to get technical, which we.
- 1:23Often do. He did direct A Temple of Doom,
- 1:27which technically is a prequel to Indiana Jones and the Raiders
- 1:31of the Lost Ark. I hate even saying that.
- 1:33It's not even Indiana Jones. You know they retitled that
- 1:36movie. No, I did not know that.
- 1:37So if you were to buy that movie now or look it up, it is it is
- 1:42for uniformity. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of
- 1:47the Lost. Ark really OK.
- 1:48As opposed to the original title, which was Raiders of the
- 1:51Lost Ark. Don't like it?
- 1:52Me neither. I think it's it's hacky.
- 1:54I'll never watch it again it. Just doesn't make any sense.
- 1:56Just let it be what it is. Let it be.
- 1:58Star Wars doesn't have to be a New Hope.
- 2:00It can just be Star Wars. Yeah, there's no hope.
- 2:02There's no hope. There was hope.
- 2:04There's always hope, Phil. Until they struck back.
- 2:06And. Then they got a return
- 2:08afterwards, you know doesn't take. 97 You still like
- 2:12Spielberg though, right? Am I correct in saying?
- 2:14That I was very excited for this movie.
- 2:16OK, Yeah, I didn't drop off until I want to say 2002.
- 2:21I want to say I saw AI and then Minority Report I think was the
- 2:24last straw. And I was like, then you're done
- 2:25with this guy and. Till years and years later,
- 2:28yeah, I'll bring them all off my shelf for you.
- 2:31Everything you meant, No deal, you own.
- 2:32Them I have war of the world garbage even that.
- 2:34Yeah, OK. I saw that.
- 2:36OK. Well, you'll see it again at
- 2:37some point. No rush, no rush.
- 2:39Lots of time, buddy. I will say, when it comes to
- 2:42sequels, this is a cold take. If anything, there was a brief
- 2:47period of time, not a long time, where I like this one as much as
- 2:53the original. Wow.
- 2:54If not for a split second, more wow.
- 2:57Now my tune has changed. Of course, years away from both
- 3:01of them. Yeah.
- 3:02Coming back to this, still things I like about it.
- 3:05Yeah. But.
- 3:05Overall, I was left with a reality check and saying no, it
- 3:10is not as good as the original, but I think there's still things
- 3:15in this movie like that we'll explore together.
- 3:17Yes, yes, we're in this for the togetherness.
- 3:19Togetherness. But I want to know, Phillip,
- 3:22please, if you don't mind sharing with everybody, what are
- 3:25your initial thoughts? Not this watch, but back then
- 3:29you said you're excited for it. Very excited.
- 3:32Did you, were you knocked down a peg or two or were you like,
- 3:35yeah, it's OK. There's two things that stick
- 3:37out to me when I think of this movie.
- 3:39The 1st is how excited I was to go.
- 3:42But in 97 I'm 18 and. There's tickets available.
- 3:47And there's tickets available, but also just that four years is
- 3:50a pivotal 4 years. And then life in general, right?
- 3:53As I was saying before 9596, I'm watching movies a little
- 3:57different than Jurassic Park. Yeah, you're better than us.
- 4:00No, just just more interested in some of the like.
- 4:03Art. Seed Art.
- 4:04The the the independent film of the time, right?
- 4:06The The Quentin Tarantino, the the Pulp fictions and the usual
- 4:10suspects and and so on. The Soderbergh.
- 4:12And Phantom Menace. But I was still excited for this
- 4:16based on the on the on the hype of of the first one I loved and
- 4:20I was excited about the prospect.
- 4:24I was like, I'm interested. And I will say that my reaction
- 4:27this time is, and I remember it not living up to its success,
- 4:31but I did own the soundtrack. It's it's another one.
- 4:35I bought the score. For I bought it out of this.
- 4:36One and had like a a gatefold cover and like there was, you
- 4:39know, layers to. It I question this purchase.
- 4:42I do because I love the score so much, and there's a sequence or
- 4:46scene in this movie a little later that was like a chilling
- 4:49moment. And I watch it now and just
- 4:50wonder what the fuck was. I think not.
- 4:53I don't like the seed and I don't like the, you know, the
- 4:55score isn't anything impressive, but in the moment I was like,
- 4:59yes, that's the greatest interesting.
- 5:01So watching it this time, what I will say is is it's a
- 5:03precipitous drop. This, for whatever reason, I
- 5:07just think completely misses the mark on a many, many occasions
- 5:11and feels more like a product rather than a movie.
- 5:17And I felt the first one, it felt like a cash grab.
- 5:19Not a product placement. Totally that, and the first one
- 5:22had a lot of that too. It just didn't feel like it.
- 5:24This one felt like it and I remember listening to some
- 5:30interview with Joel Schumacher and he was talking about when he
- 5:33was making the 4th Batman movie, The Batman and Robin movie, that
- 5:36everything he heard from the studio was about making it more
- 5:40toyatic. Is that a word?
- 5:42It isn't really, but that was the principle was get it was
- 5:45make it make the toys. So you need a new outfit, you
- 5:48need a new Batmobile, you need a new bat wing, you need all these
- 5:51characters, you need all these outfits, all of that stuff.
- 5:54And I feel like this movie is more like that that the things
- 5:59that are in it don't feel organic to the movie, whereas
- 6:02the first one I it all did. That's interesting, Phillip.
- 6:06I didn't pick up on that. I picked up on on the fact of
- 6:09let's do things differently and just we need new stuff, not to
- 6:13sell it or make the toys. But now looking at it now, the
- 6:18colours, you know, like, yeah, I can see that.
- 6:20For sure 100%. I remember the retractable chair
- 6:24in the truck that happens in the movie.
- 6:26It's such a useless scene in the movie.
- 6:29Like, it's 20 seconds, right? Like, let me out.
- 6:31He gets out, he shoots the thing and OK, bring me back in.
- 6:34Oh, yeah, right. It's cool.
- 6:36It's 20 seconds and it's something cool to look at.
- 6:38And it's like, that's just for a toy.
- 6:41And it was a toy. It was OK just like that.
- 6:42I remember the commercial being there.
- 6:44So that feel, the movie generally just feels more
- 6:48cynical that way. And as a result, I I found it
- 6:51really challenging to get hooked in.
- 6:53You're out. I was.
- 6:55I was barely in. And when there were scenes that
- 6:58really did get me, and there are some in here that I think are
- 7:01just as good in some ways as as the first one.
- 7:04It's followed or or preceded by scenes that just don't work.
- 7:07So it just doesn't get the flow for me.
- 7:10You mentioned last week, Phil, and I don't want to bring it up
- 7:13too much here, but the writer. Yeah, David Kepp.
- 7:16David Kepp, He wrote this one. He's back.
- 7:18Yeah. All the creators really are
- 7:19back. And you insisted upon him
- 7:23getting a hit and then getting a miss.
- 7:25Right. Equally almost.
- 7:26Yeah, yeah. And I didn't believe you.
- 7:29I rarely do. That's true.
- 7:31You go. In with skepticism I do, yeah.
- 7:33And I can now I can see maybe sort of what you're saying.
- 7:36But you know, small sample size for me totally because I did
- 7:40watch Black Bang. You like that?
- 7:41And I thought, well, this is a good movie.
- 7:43My wife both enjoyed that. Like, cool, because that's where
- 7:46I'm like, oh, that's funny. I just watched this guy.
- 7:48Yep. But yeah, it certainly has its
- 7:51issues of problems qualms. It generally just feels lesser.
- 7:55Lesser, yeah. And I think.
- 7:56Like 90% of sequels. Yeah, they try and go bigger in
- 7:59general, right. That's like go bigger, take the
- 8:01stuff and make it bigger and somehow is lesser as a result.
- 8:05Yeah, it's a, it's a strange dichotomy, but it's very common
- 8:07of of movies and sequels and for and for sure.
- 8:10I appreciate you got to take some risks and you don't want
- 8:12like a jaws to situation necessarily.
- 8:15Sure. Rehashing the same thing.
- 8:17Yeah, like the storyline, like if you read the synopsis, yeah,
- 8:21pretty similar. It's the same thing.
- 8:22Sure. I find this to be pretty similar
- 8:24at times as well, but it does take different approaches when
- 8:28it can. I don't think it always works,
- 8:30but I do agree that it is kind of breaking some of the molds.
- 8:33Molds exactly. Now Speaking of mold, yes.
- 8:37Do you have any in this house? Cuz that's not good for you.
- 8:39I've heard it's bad. I don't.
- 8:41I don't have any right now. Good, Wonderful.
- 8:43Wonderful. This movie has the same type of
- 8:46intro, sort of the same structure, where it has an
- 8:51opening attack, there's an an incident.
- 8:54That's right, the big attack of the Raptor and so forth, this
- 8:56really big scene. And little smaller in size of
- 8:59dinosaur itself, but they work well in numbers.
- 9:02That's right, the number. They have the numbers.
- 9:03Let me set it up for you, buddy. Please.
- 9:05Rich couple, I'm assuming. Yeah.
- 9:07On a yacht of sorts. Take a little bit of a break.
- 9:10On an island. A sojourn.
- 9:11Yeah, I will. I guess.
- 9:13Why not have their fancy dinner and what have you?
- 9:16I love this actor. The Father love him.
- 9:18Yeah, Seinfeld. No, no, that's the way, he says
- 9:21Deidre. OK, I just love it.
- 9:23I love him. He's got a great.
- 9:24Accent. He does have a sucker for
- 9:26accents. But they have a daughter.
- 9:28She wanders off. Yeah, and she sees something.
- 9:31Cute. Cute.
- 9:32Yeah, cute. I'm not sure what dinosaur breed
- 9:36that was. Can't.
- 9:37Be. Oh, there.
- 9:38Thank you. That is mentioned, actually.
- 9:40Now you mentioned. So you said that the guy's a
- 9:41campy idiot, David, and she's attacked you swarmed.
- 9:46Yeah. Yeah, there's a lot of them I
- 9:48love. It's cool.
- 9:49I love campies. This, I think.
- 9:52Of course you do. When I first saw this movie in
- 9:5597, this was a theatrical I was so excited that they killed a
- 9:59girl. I've told you before I I younger
- 10:02the better. I wish so badly that someone
- 10:04would kill young people in movies.
- 10:06Yeah, babies if yeah, like I told you, my first horror movie
- 10:10I wrote babies and grandmother the 1st 1st 15 minutes of the
- 10:13movie. Is that so I was so excited I
- 10:15watched this and I was like, yes, OK, we're it's getting
- 10:19there like it's and as I said, I'm getting a little more
- 10:21mature. My movie tastes are a little
- 10:24differing. You're more.
- 10:25Sick. Yeah, certainly.
- 10:27So I love that the movie kind of opens.
- 10:29It's a much different vibe, right?
- 10:30And again, I was like, the balls to like, the kid is being
- 10:33swarmed and eaten, presumably, presumably, and the mother is
- 10:36like shrieking in terror. And the dissolve, like the last
- 10:40movie, instead of the lawyer coming over on the raft, is
- 10:43Malcolm yawning in front of a poster.
- 10:47I was like, oh, I don't love that, but I did think that
- 10:51Goldblum looked gorgeous. He looks so good in this movie.
- 10:54He seems taller this movie. Oh, I got some lifts.
- 10:57I heard 6 inches. I guess maybe the last time we
- 11:01saw him sitting in the helicopter.
- 11:03Collapsed for a while. Yeah, sitting in the Jeep, he
- 11:05was never really extended. True.
- 11:07But this movie, Yeah, he's lanky.
- 11:09Yeah, The only time you really saw him in full breadth is the.
- 11:13That's a big pile of shit, Yeah. I was just thinking that.
- 11:15Yeah, I was just thinking about it.
- 11:16Goes his way. Absolutely.
- 11:18Yeah. I just thought absolutely
- 11:19beautiful guy. I wrote my notes.
- 11:21It's still gorgeous, but he's on his way to go see Hammond.
- 11:25Yes, he's gotten. Summoned He has been summoned by
- 11:29the Great Attenborough. Yes, who better to summon,
- 11:33really, than an Englishman playing a Scotsman or Welshman
- 11:37and whatever who answers the door?
- 11:38This is right up your alley. I wrote here.
- 11:41Defer to Dave because I know I know this guy, but I couldn't
- 11:44tell. You, but you knew he was in
- 11:45Seinfeld. I did know he was in Seinfeld.
- 11:47Mr. Pitt. As Peterman or Bookman or.
- 11:51Well, it was somebody that Elaine worked for, so you're in
- 11:54the right area. Yeah.
- 11:55So good for you. Yeah.
- 11:57He's been a few other things, but yeah, that's.
- 11:59Yeah. There he is.
- 11:59He's a good doorman. Yeah.
- 12:01It seems appropriate, Alfred like.
- 12:02Yeah, so we've got Malcolm. And in this sort of brief moment
- 12:07we get, and this is actually a good example.
- 12:10Remember when we watched the first one last week, there was,
- 12:14I was talking about how brilliant and really structured
- 12:17I thought the screenplay was and the ability to relay exposition
- 12:21in an entertaining way that didn't feel like you're just
- 12:24getting an exposition dump. Yeah, this is that scene, except
- 12:28it's better. Wait, sorry, are you going
- 12:30somewhere else with that? I think it's terrible.
- 12:32Yeah. It's not great.
- 12:33It feels like such a nympho dump.
- 12:34Explains everything. For the last four years.
- 12:37You've ruined my life. This isn't him talking to the
- 12:39nephew, right? Slandered my name.
- 12:41You took away my career. Grant didn't even do this.
- 12:44My suit cost more than your education.
- 12:46Right. You're like, OK, so here we are.
- 12:49It's the most pedantic, like, silly.
- 12:52Just tacked on, if you will, I'll.
- 12:55Let it slide. Explanation for what's happened
- 12:58that it just it sticks out as really being lame like just
- 13:01that's bad writing to me and the main issue, one of the main
- 13:04issues I should say there's many is that Malcolm feels like he's
- 13:06dialed to a different pitch than he was the last time he feels
- 13:10like a different. Person.
- 13:11Person. Almost like it's not Ian
- 13:13Malcolm, it's Jeff Goldblum. Yes, but not Malcolm.
- 13:17He's changed. And I think the movie treats him
- 13:19as an action star, and he's a chaotician, he's a scientist,
- 13:24he's a rock star, as they say in the first one.
- 13:26Philip, I'm not going to push back too much on that.
- 13:29I had the same sort of feelings. And my overall take on it is I
- 13:33love Jeff Goldblum as that supporting guy just in general
- 13:38in all movies. I think he's an awesome person,
- 13:41though. I don't really know him, of
- 13:42course, but to lead the show, I don't think so.
- 13:45Yeah, I just don't think so. He's not this show like, man,
- 13:49maybe not. Maybe you're right.
- 13:50I haven't seen him in enough, like, leading roles.
- 13:52But yeah, I think, yeah, I think you're right.
- 13:53Yeah, but I mean, that's just my opinion.
- 13:56But I I do always enjoy his conversations with Hammond.
- 14:00Yeah, I do like their rapport. I don't like it so much with
- 14:03Ludlow. You're right.
- 14:05It's like, OK, it's just predictable.
- 14:07Like this is set up your. I know what you're doing.
- 14:10Here it is. I understand how NDA's go, he
- 14:13was just telling the truth, but as we knew from.
- 14:16The Insider Yes, how NDA's work NDA's are very.
- 14:19Matter about the truth. That's right, you signed.
- 14:21It even says here there aren't versions of the truth, there's
- 14:23just the truth. Now, obviously 30 years later,
- 14:26sadly it's up for debate. But yes, back in the day you
- 14:29could have one version of the truth.
- 14:31Speaking of versions, there's another version of the island.
- 14:33It's called Sight B. Yeah.
- 14:36Did you know about that? Nobody knew about it.
- 14:39Nobody knew about it, and I'm OK with that.
- 14:42Hey man, doesn't need to say everything.
- 14:44You have our business. You.
- 14:45Are the biggest proponent of explain everything, of tell me
- 14:49everything, of detail everything.
- 14:52It took me 15 minutes to get there.
- 14:53I want to see a watch. I just have a gut feeling that
- 14:59you're going to bring it up 100% as maybe even this term you've
- 15:02been throwing around lately, which I pretend to know.
- 15:06Yes, yes, you do not along. Retcon, yeah.
- 15:09What it stands for, I don't exactly know, but every time
- 15:12you've used it, I get a general idea what it means in the
- 15:15context. In the context.
- 15:16So I kind of went along with it. Sure, you did explain it to me
- 15:19and I thank you for it. Yeah, retroactive continuity.
- 15:22There you go. Yeah, retcon.
- 15:24Retcon. I don't know, you just kept
- 15:26spewing it out. Sure.
- 15:27I'm like, I thought, maybe that's your word of the month.
- 15:30Check the calendar, yeah. But I mean, as I said, just
- 15:34because he doesn't say it on screen in the first movie
- 15:38doesn't mean it's impossible for it to exist or it's forced to
- 15:41make things work there. Everyone's on a need to know
- 15:43basis in that first one, OK. I think that is being very
- 15:48generous. Thank you.
- 15:49I'm a. Generous man Appreciate it.
- 15:51I don't appreciate it. I think that's a ridiculous
- 15:54argument. OK, well, leave it.
- 15:55I think that site B is, it could only be retcon, right?
- 15:58Because you've already done it on the island and they left and
- 16:03you know, there's a way. This is where I was talking
- 16:04about those embryos somehow. So you don't think they had to
- 16:08switch islands? I think that they didn't have to
- 16:10because when they left the original island, presumably at
- 16:13some point it would have fallen into disrepair because if you
- 16:17recall, they just leave the island.
- 16:19So all these dinosaurs, Rex and Raptors and all the things are
- 16:22still around and they're breeding because we just saw the
- 16:24eggs when they were out there. So I don't know.
- 16:27And I don't care why there's a site B except for that it feels
- 16:30lazy. And you, and rather than explain
- 16:33all this other stuff, you just go, oh, yeah, you know, we did
- 16:35it over here. Don't worry.
- 16:35About it, would it be better if it was site C?
- 16:38Yeah. That's that's that's the thing.
- 16:40I. Just I have no, I have no
- 16:42patience for B. Nonetheless, Hammond needs
- 16:46A-Team of four people. Yeah, why 4?
- 16:49Why not? Even counted on his.
- 16:50Finger and he's got these charts.
- 16:53I hate these I there's so much exposition at the beginning to
- 16:56set the table and I think part of it is because none of it
- 16:59makes any sense. They need a photographer from
- 17:02National Geographic or Greenpeace, the weapons expert
- 17:05and the chaotician again, you know, and a paleontologist again
- 17:09like what that I get you just you're just taking pictures like
- 17:14the whole reason for the movie. I don't understand and I don't
- 17:18think they do a good enough job explaining so that when things
- 17:21start happening in the movie, I find it's a real challenge for
- 17:24me to get involved and engaged. And I felt that similarly in 97
- 17:28I I didn't love this movie then, I like it a lot less now.
- 17:31I can agree with you on one little thing here.
- 17:32OK, I'll take it. Because this is the first time
- 17:36that it felt like that to me as well, where I don't think
- 17:40they're giving me a good enough reason to why these four people
- 17:44are going to take some pictures of living in their habitat that
- 17:47it's OK to whatever and Ian doesn't want to go.
- 17:52No, nor should he. And as an example of the
- 17:55beginning of my let down, Hammond makes a point and more
- 17:59exposition makes a point to say we had a little incident and
- 18:03don't worry, she's OK. Oh, you and you thought she was
- 18:06dead? I wanted her to be dead.
- 18:08She did to be dead for this movie to work.
- 18:11Oh, don't worry, she's fine. She's fine.
- 18:13Yeah, so that's a pretty good impression.
- 18:15It's pretty good. We're trying to set up steaks,
- 18:17right? We established this movie,
- 18:18right? The dinosaurs don't care.
- 18:20They're going to eat you. And we just watched 40 of them
- 18:24swarm this little girl. We didn't get a head count.
- 18:26It's. True.
- 18:28And then later it's it's even more frustrating to me because
- 18:30later the same thing more or less happens to another
- 18:34character and he gets completely destroyed.
- 18:38When we get there, I'll tell you the difference.
- 18:40OK, I'm excited. It's something we'll leave
- 18:43behind. Speaking of excited, Ian, like I
- 18:47said, is excited to go, right? That's what we said here.
- 18:50But he finds out who the paleontologist is.
- 18:54And I'll tell you, I much prefer a single Ian Malcolm.
- 18:57I don't like this. Family man.
- 18:59Yeah. It's just not his character.
- 19:01Not his character, but he's dating a woman named, I don't
- 19:04know if you know her, Sarah Harding.
- 19:06Yes, Sir. Julianne Moore Julianne Moore
- 19:08and this now becomes a. Rescue mission.
- 19:11How did you like the delivery of it I.
- 19:13Hated it. I thought I liked it.
- 19:15I hated it now yes, I liked it the first time in 97 happened
- 19:19when I was talking about did not age well.
- 19:21The the scene in the movie that I get chills back then in 97
- 19:27listening to that score and it's rumbling as he's going through
- 19:30his you keep doing this. You can't keep right his old
- 19:34monologue and he turns to him and it's a rescue mission and
- 19:38it's starting right now and the the music starts to swell.
- 19:42I'm like so excited. I'm like what what did I care?
- 19:44It doesn't feel any of that same power right now.
- 19:47I, I felt nothing but like you're saying, Malcolm as family
- 19:50man, as action hero isn't that character to me and shouldn't be
- 19:55that character. He's got none of the swagger of
- 19:58the first one. I don't think.
- 19:59He's kind of been a little neutered a little bit.
- 20:01He lost the swagger. Yeah.
- 20:03How would you have it after that experience in the first one?
- 20:06Philip, I guess I. Think so?
- 20:07The dinosaurs took away his swagger.
- 20:17You know who does have swagger? Those Richard Schiff.
- 20:19Richard Schiff of. Westworld.
- 20:22West Wing. Whatever.
- 20:23So he's one of your guys? Plays Toby Ziegler, the one
- 20:26television show that I can reference.
- 20:28You take it away from me with a whatever.
- 20:30Fuck you. Yeah, we more or less get to
- 20:34meet the team. Yeah.
- 20:36Yeah. We're establishing early.
- 20:38We're about 15 in. Yeah.
- 20:40We have a very young Vince Vaughn.
- 20:42Post swingers, but just post. Yes, nice, very fresh.
- 20:46Looking Vince Vaughn. Yes, yes.
- 20:48Before Slender. Yeah, before Santa Claus, Fred
- 20:51Claus, Fred Claus, whatever. Just give you another whatever.
- 20:55Just keep throwing away, who gives a shit?
- 20:57Whatever, say what I want. Well, there you go.
- 21:00Those are the two people. This is the team.
- 21:02They're trying to establish your team, yes.
- 21:04And Vaughn starts talking about Greenpeace.
- 21:08Why are you in the Greenpeace Girls?
- 21:10He says women. And he says, oh, that's noble.
- 21:13And like, yeah, Noble was last year.
- 21:15This year I want to get paid. It's just such a silly line.
- 21:18Like the writing of this movie is really bad.
- 21:21Though it is true Greenpeace is made-up of 80% women.
- 21:23Yeah, that's, that's that's true.
- 21:24That's is it. What Vaughn does get to say is
- 21:28one of my favorite lines in the movie, which is where he's
- 21:30saying he's stuck going on this wild goose chase, and Malcolm
- 21:34gets to turn around and say no, no, no, no.
- 21:37Where you're going is the only place where the geese chase you.
- 21:40That is good, Good line. That is good line.
- 21:42Yeah, he still has it. And that's the magic of Goldblum
- 21:45delivering kind of funny lines. The rest of that, like he fails,
- 21:48I think in so many other ways. But when it comes to nail in a
- 21:50line, he's very good. But it fits better in a
- 21:53supporting role. Totally.
- 21:54They also, those are his character.
- 21:56Yeah, right. Must go faster.
- 21:57He's got a swagger. He's got a humor.
- 21:58Yeah, that's in the first one. Samuel can carry a scene on its
- 22:01own and you get some cool liners from another guy.
- 22:03Yeah, perfect. Totally.
- 22:05Yeah, this is not a first line sentiment.
- 22:07Not that guy, but that's also introduce another character who
- 22:11can probably lead the show, I think his daughter.
- 22:16Yeah, Kelly the gymnast. The gymnast.
- 22:18Let's establish early that she was on the gymnastics team, but
- 22:21cut. That's very important to know
- 22:23she was cut, which tells me she's not very good.
- 22:27She's not very good. Well.
- 22:28There you go. And much like the I'm a hacker
- 22:31conversation at 40 minutes into the first movie, this
- 22:35conversation 20 minutes in saying I'm a gymnast, I wonder,
- 22:39is that going to come back later?
- 22:41Really stupid. It is stupid, yeah, but overall,
- 22:43how do you like their sort? Of I hate it, OK, I don't think
- 22:46there's any chemistry between the two.
- 22:47I don't think the relationship makes any sense.
- 22:50I think it's trying to mold Malcolm into something else and
- 22:53I don't. I want things to change.
- 22:54I don't need it to be a rehash of the same, but it's so
- 22:57drastically different to me and it it don't really explain it.
- 23:01So it just feels like it's just thrown into the mix to offer
- 23:04steaks. It feels lazy and cheap.
- 23:07There was no other way to get a child onto Site B, so you have
- 23:12to create some really ridiculous plotting.
- 23:15Julianne Moore I get, OK, you put someone out there.
- 23:18It's his girlfriend. He needs to go against his will
- 23:20to go and. Say that's not enough.
- 23:22It's at least somewhat in the sphere of believable, but the
- 23:26girl is just there to have us go, Oh no, protect the child.
- 23:30And I was willing to accept at the previous time because it was
- 23:32part of Grant's arc designed to establish that he hates kids and
- 23:37now he's going to like kids. So there was a lot of other
- 23:40purposes involved, not just the stakes.
- 23:42And she is just the stakes and just the thing to get caught and
- 23:46hold people up and delay certain things.
- 23:49You mentioned sort of laying some future groundwork, some
- 23:52foreshadowing. We have the high hide sort of
- 23:54introduced early on Bite Radio. Which is funny, sure.
- 23:58I'm glad they acknowledged that though, it's pretty high.
- 24:01And you get shift just saying hi, hide, hi hide.
- 24:04That's pretty funny. I was OK with that.
- 24:05But we're we're 15 minutes in or so and I think we're on the
- 24:08island. It feels like it didn't pretty
- 24:10close despite the fact that we're not loving the IT.
- 24:12Feels so rushed. It just feels like they're just
- 24:14jamming it down our throats. But maybe it's probably for the
- 24:16best. Let's just get there, I guess.
- 24:18So, I don't know. I don't know.
- 24:20But even though that guy, the dude, the boat guy doesn't want
- 24:23to take him there, next scene, they're there.
- 24:26Doesn't want to dock. There doesn't want to dock
- 24:28there. Well, whatever, I guess it's
- 24:29later so he's not easily accessible.
- 24:31Basically, it's two hours away, yeah, is what he says.
- 24:34OK, further away than a chopper later, but.
- 24:36I swear that there's a scene when I watched this movie The
- 24:39first couple of times of that boat and it's been destroyed.
- 24:44They've been eaten. I don't remember seeing it this
- 24:46time. Am I getting mixed up with
- 24:48Jurassic Park 3 or? I don't know, I've never seen
- 24:50Jurassic Park 3. I thought that was in.
- 24:53This maybe it's the boat later that you're thinking about,
- 24:54because everybody on that boat dies.
- 24:56Any who we're on the island, Isla Snorna sipee Isla Isla
- 25:01Sorna. Point is, here we are.
- 25:04And he's going to walk on the island knowing full well what
- 25:07happened the last time and just start screaming and yelling and
- 25:11everybody else is on board. It's fucking dinosaurs.
- 25:15You know why they do it? Explain it.
- 25:17Just for that funny line where Vince says the last name
- 25:19Harding. Yeah.
- 25:20How many Sarah's you think there are on this island?
- 25:23That's funny. It's sure.
- 25:25But you're opening up a nitpick. You know I.
- 25:28Don't think these are nitpicks. This is fundamental problems
- 25:30with the writing and I refuse to accept your lenient attitude to
- 25:36what is an absolute atrocity of a screenplay, at the very least
- 25:41for this time. You know, I think you're maybe
- 25:43defending these early scenes because maybe you like some
- 25:45later scenes, but this objectively cannot be allowed to
- 25:49exist. It is so egregiously offensive
- 25:53to the laws of common sense. Common sense.
- 25:56And again, if it weren't Malcolm saying it, if this was a brand
- 25:59new group of people that don't know what they're dealing with,
- 26:02I'll maybe allow for a certain amount of naivete.
- 26:05But these are people specifically going to the
- 26:07island, know what is happening and more, none more than
- 26:10Malcolm. To scream and yell minute one
- 26:12when they get off is stupid. Funny line though.
- 26:16Great funny line. Absolutely.
- 26:18Just a context. It's useless.
- 26:19Worth it. There it is.
- 26:21We find Sarah's bag. Thank goodness.
- 26:24Yeah, we did. 5 minutes later. So glad she didn't get very far
- 26:27in two days. Head start that she had.
- 26:30It's a good bag too. Solid bag.
- 26:31Lucky bag, lucky bag. And we have a, a very funny, you
- 26:36mentioned it last week. Spielberg moment.
- 26:38Yes, bunch of Stegosauri making their way and they don't have
- 26:42any idea they're sneaking up on them.
- 26:44Yes, who would have guessed that there would have been a £5000
- 26:48monster 25 feet away from them until they managed to turn
- 26:52around? Yes, that's a good point.
- 26:55Yeah, it's a funny thing, but he's consistent.
- 26:57Yeah, that's. It's certainly not a problem of
- 26:59this movie. He's.
- 26:59Like no ones really called me out on this, I'm just going to
- 27:02keep on doing. It absolutely, absolutely.
- 27:05But I do appreciate that this is another Malcolm line where he
- 27:10gets to be the Malcolm that I think he is and should be.
- 27:13Vaughn and Schiff are all transfixed by what's happening.
- 27:17And he says, yeah, oh, yeah, that's how it starts.
- 27:19Oohs and ahhs. And pretty soon there's running
- 27:21and screaming. That's a great delivery of a
- 27:24line. And true to his character and
- 27:26true to the movie. Very few and far between in this
- 27:28one. It's.
- 27:29Your best scene? Best scene?
- 27:30Best scene? No.
- 27:31All right. Of course she has to touch it.
- 27:33Has to touch it. Sarah.
- 27:34Yeah, got it. That part I get.
- 27:36You get it. If you're that close to a
- 27:38dinosaur, you have to. I think you have to touch it.
- 27:40You got to touch it. And touching it actually turns
- 27:42out not to be the problem. The problem is the camera.
- 27:45Digital that's in this world wouldn't even matter.
- 27:48But there you go to wind the film, Spooks the kid, and we get
- 27:51our bullshit action sequence. Yeah.
- 27:53It's. Lame.
- 27:54Well choreographed last week. I don't.
- 27:56Know why you're so positive on this fucking movie?
- 27:58I don't understand your flippant remarks to how dismissive any
- 28:05criticisms of this movie is. Because I just know there's a
- 28:07lot, so I want to try to. I'm pacing myself, Phil.
- 28:11OK. I am pacing myself because we
- 28:14have a scene coming up. Very.
- 28:15Soon. OK, you get too excited.
- 28:18But no, you're right. And I did say last week how I
- 28:20felt that JP one, I'm going to call him that.
- 28:24Yeah, like stood up the choreography of the dinosaur.
- 28:27Sure, sure. This.
- 28:29It's like, no, the whole tail thing.
- 28:31Yeah, it's just showy. It looks bad.
- 28:33CGI too. Like it looks worse than the
- 28:35first one. I don't like it going through
- 28:37the hollow branch. Yeah, no, yeah, it just Yeah.
- 28:40Lazy buying it. Lazy and lazy.
- 28:42Lazy, yes. And then what's even worse, to
- 28:45cap that off, they see fire. Oh yeah.
- 28:49Oh my gosh, who else What? Oh my, what could what, who what
- 28:52could it be here but a fucking terrible joke.
- 28:56I thought I would make breakfast.
- 28:58What the fuck would you say that's delivered worse than
- 29:00Samuel Jackson? 'S yes, yes, she is terrible.
- 29:04She's worse. She's a kid, so she's allowed to
- 29:06be a little terrible, but she's got way too much time on this
- 29:09movie. The beauty of the first one, the
- 29:11kids were very used minimally, but I think very effectively.
- 29:17And this kid is running throughout the whole movie and
- 29:20that's a failure of the movies. Like that's a bad choice to make
- 29:24because she doesn't have any character and she doesn't have
- 29:26any personality. It's just have any reason to be
- 29:28there. So all she is is an object of
- 29:31fear and because of that it slows people down.
- 29:34So it's only there for plot. So let me just clarify this.
- 29:38You don't like the only black character?
- 29:43Touché Touché I have no trouble with that.
- 29:49Aspect of. Her performance or?
- 29:51I'm just I'm just teasing you though because but she does
- 29:53suck. Yeah, it's bad.
- 29:55Just suck. A lot of them suck, but she
- 29:56sucks the most. Yeah, she's terrible.
- 29:58I do like eggs. The record is shown, yeah.
- 30:01So none of this movie makes any sense at these early stages.
- 30:04Nothing is clicking. Well, Phillip, luckily we see a
- 30:08bunch of choppers which I'm like fills out.
- 30:13It's a real struggle every week. In Gen., why would they have
- 30:16another team asks. Schiff.
- 30:19Yep. The good news is it brings in a
- 30:21great character I like to call Bizarro Picard.
- 30:24OK, OK, explain it. He's bald.
- 30:27OK. But he would do everything the
- 30:29opposite of what Captain Picard would do.
- 30:32OK, Yeah. Not helpful.
- 30:33I don't know what Picard would do or not do.
- 30:35Well, explain it to me. No, there's nothing really left
- 30:38to explain, Phillip. Just go along with it.
- 30:40Just Bizarro. It's just bizarro, Picard.
- 30:42Okay. I'm digging it.
- 30:43Okay, let's do it. But you know who I'm talking.
- 30:46About what's his name? Pete.
- 30:47Possible with Pete, Yeah. Yeah, from the.
- 30:49Town. Yeah, we love him in the town.
- 30:51Yeah, he is a bit of a high spot in the movie.
- 30:55Yeah. I think he's wasted,
- 30:56unfortunately. Unfortunately not his fault.
- 30:58No, that's for sure. I think they introduced him as
- 31:00somebody that's gonna be a thing.
- 31:02Yeah. And I don't think the movie
- 31:03really delivers on the promise of what he can bring to the
- 31:05table. Ends up being 1/2 thing.
- 31:07I do love his opening spiel, yes, And I love the fact that he
- 31:11has that duetang that's. Great.
- 31:14Get Elvis. And the way he explains what
- 31:16they actually look like, I think that's.
- 31:17Funny, that's great. What I will accept is Peter
- 31:20Stormare. That's who that I couldn't think
- 31:22of his name. Yeah, yeah, really funny.
- 31:24I'm as I'm getting older, his names elude me.
- 31:26Yes, I could tell he's. In Seinfeld, no problem.
- 31:28Is he? Yeah.
- 31:29The holes. He's electrician.
- 31:31OK, Yeah, yeah, I know him from Fargo, that yes, he's a geyser.
- 31:37I also know him from Armageddon. Oh, yes.
- 31:39He's in that Minority Report. Yes, he's in that too.
- 31:42And 1000 other things. Yeah, he's in a lot of things.
- 31:44He's in even a video game. He's in one of those, yes.
- 31:46Picture. Yeah.
- 31:47But most importantly, he's in Seinfeld.
- 31:49That's right known for on IODB put on his headstone they find a
- 31:54baby T Rex that's. Correct, that checks out.
- 31:57What better to do then is to, I guess, kidnap him?
- 32:00Well, yeah. He's injured.
- 32:02Bizarro Picard wants his catch, right?
- 32:04That's right, you're luring it. This is how they're going to,
- 32:07yeah, this is how they're going to checks out.
- 32:09Yeah, that part does make sense. And Malcolm is basically like,
- 32:13we got to get out of here. Yeah, he wants.
- 32:14He wants that. I'm going back.
- 32:16My daughter's here. Like I got to protect, I got to
- 32:17save and Sarah's like I'm staying.
- 32:18I don't care. Like it or lump it.
- 32:20Yeah, and then Vaughn, I just doesn't make any sense.
- 32:23He knew they were coming. Yeah, they had a plan.
- 32:26And like, what's the plan? Me.
- 32:27Yeah. What?
- 32:29Lame. O it's so dumb.
- 32:31And doesn't really pay off either.
- 32:33This movie's really, really struggles to to find its
- 32:36footing. I'm so frustrated as I'm
- 32:39watching this. If you told me I was going to
- 32:40watch a movie, Richard Schiff, Julianne Moore, Jeff Goldblum
- 32:42and Vince Vaughn and Kelly and directed by Steven Spielberg, I
- 32:45would be ecstatic. Bizarro Picard, come on.
- 32:48And Bizarro Picard shows up and be possible.
- 32:50Exactly. And everybody in this movie
- 32:53sucks. Nonetheless, Phil, he's the guy,
- 32:57and his job is to free all the captive dinosaurs.
- 33:02Hammond has sent him there for that and to take some pictures.
- 33:05Yes, yes, the pictures. While he's there, yeah.
- 33:07Why free the animals? Why take a few?
- 33:09Pictures there take a couple of shots.
- 33:10I don't. Really know why I'm sending you
- 33:11there? Yeah, just go get some
- 33:12Polaroids. Yeah, we're about an hour into
- 33:15the movie, though, because I wanna skip over everything else.
- 33:20Fair enough, fair enough. We've got these.
- 33:22Let's get to the good stuff. Well, we think about an hour
- 33:25into the last movie, if you recall, that was the T Rex.
- 33:27I didn't put a time stamp. On it attack sequence, we talked
- 33:29a lot about it cuz the jaws hour break you know, so forth, OK.
- 33:34Yes, I did. I did.
- 33:35Listen, you didn't put a time stamp.
- 33:36I put a time. You did.
- 33:37This one was OK. It's an hour and let's have
- 33:40another one. And what's better than one dyno
- 33:42attack, T Rex attack than two? Now, what are your thoughts on
- 33:46this action sequence on its own and then how it compares to the
- 33:49T Rex scene in in the first one? I have a few issues with this
- 33:53one. OK, I feel like they retconned
- 33:55the T Rex like they've changed some of.
- 33:58Those. Personality, like, yeah, it's
- 34:01like, oh, it's mother and father.
- 34:02Like it's a family. Like, I don't know.
- 34:04Just that's again, she's presuming that there's this
- 34:07parental relationship with dinosaurs.
- 34:08There could be, sure. I'm not qualified to answer
- 34:11that. She is.
- 34:12She's a paleontologist, God damn it.
- 34:14But it feels silly. I don't.
- 34:15Think they need to though. No, I think and it's not really.
- 34:18Stakes, right? Oh well, just double.
- 34:20Yeah, exactly. And it I get the sense that the
- 34:23T Rex is out to get them. Like it's giving it too much
- 34:28human emotion. They have the they have the
- 34:31baby. Yeah, I, I think.
- 34:33That's the If there is, I'm not. I believe me.
- 34:35I'm not one to give this movie credit, but if there is one, it
- 34:38is that they're attracted to the baby in the.
- 34:41Trailer I guess, but the trailer's not moving.
- 34:43So it's fair. That's the whole thing.
- 34:46If it's not moving, yeah, how does it know to hit it?
- 34:48Flashlight. Yeah, yeah, I suppose.
- 34:51Anyways, I honestly just wanted to say that they retcon the
- 34:54dinosaur. Yes, that's all.
- 34:55Seems like it. Yeah, that's really all I want
- 34:57to OK comment on. But the actual sequence itself I
- 35:01find to be pretty good. Yeah, from from the big first
- 35:05action piece on the island. Yeah, I think it's the rain
- 35:09coming down, yes, going up to the high hide, yes.
- 35:12There's a lot of things happening here.
- 35:13The trailer getting dragged over the Cliff.
- 35:16Hang on to something. Hang on to something, right?
- 35:18That shot pulling over the three faces as they're about to
- 35:22plummet over. I thought very skilled
- 35:24filmmaking. This is the first time in this
- 35:26whole movie that I found Spielberg's Like Touch again,
- 35:29because the first hour I've found nothing exciting or
- 35:32interesting about anything he's bringing to the table.
- 35:34I think they fell down the rope one too many times.
- 35:37OK, dragged on a little too long.
- 35:38Yeah, I do agree that the scene is a little too long.
- 35:40Yeah. But I really did enjoy the
- 35:43Julianne Moore on the glass. Yes.
- 35:45And the crack and watching that establish and kind of creak and
- 35:48crack. So I like the kind of Rube
- 35:50Goldberg mechanism that that scene kind of creates.
- 35:53It's really well. And I like that they kind of
- 35:55hold on to the rope and the trailer kind of falls around
- 35:57them, but that's kind of clever. They did that in the first one
- 36:01with the Jeep coming down through the tree.
- 36:02That's two. Yeah.
- 36:03And they flipped over and they landed back into the Jeep.
- 36:06So again, just coincidence. I don't know.
- 36:08No, that's, that's a good, that's a good catch.
- 36:10I didn't really kind of connect those two things when I first
- 36:12saw it, but it is. True.
- 36:14I get it buddy. You're locked in.
- 36:16And this is Eddie's chance. Your boy.
- 36:18Yeah. Just to save the day.
- 36:21Yeah. And he does.
- 36:24Ish. What did you think of the kill
- 36:26though? Were you satisfied with the
- 36:28level of I don't gore? There's not much to it, but are
- 36:31you happy with it? I would have.
- 36:32Loved a little bit more time eating.
- 36:38Slow down I I mean I chew too fast.
- 36:41That's right, you know that he's going to swim after, you know,
- 36:43who knows? But yeah, I I thought overall it
- 36:46was pretty good to to have him die and, and I think as a
- 36:48character. He's a wink.
- 36:50Yeah, I like that he's pulled apart, though.
- 36:52I I did enjoy that generally, I thought this was the first life
- 36:55that the movie has shown. It's an hour in.
- 36:57That doesn't bode well. And it also merges, yes, the
- 37:01good guys and the bad guys, for lack of a better term.
- 37:04Yes, it could be a Gray area if you want, but.
- 37:06Strangely, I really like this shot.
- 37:09I don't know what it is, but I when I watched it this time
- 37:11again, as you know, I've been very clear, there's very little
- 37:15high spots in this. For whatever reason, the shot in
- 37:18which they climb up, it was the first time in the movie I felt
- 37:21connected to anything, and I really enjoyed the way that the
- 37:24score hit. The camera kind of pulls and
- 37:25there's shadows and mist and everybody kind of blends
- 37:28together into one team. I did enjoy that.
- 37:30Good. Wonderful.
- 37:31Did you enjoy the fact that they dried instantly?
- 37:33No. Like really dry.
- 37:34Yeah, yeah, that's a hard rain. It's tough.
- 37:37You would be that dry for a day. It's tough when we watch Jaws 4,
- 37:41we'll we'll keep an eye out for something similar.
- 37:43I forgot a couple of times in this movie that Spielberg's
- 37:46directing. I it has no real connection to
- 37:48me as a Spielberg. Yeah, it just doesn't.
- 37:50Feel like it has no life to it, which is strange because so much
- 37:53of the last movie I've. I credited so much to his
- 37:56talent, and I see so little of it evident here.
- 38:00It's interesting. It is interesting.
- 38:01There's a disconnect somewhere along the way, buddy.
- 38:03Yeah. Disconnected.
- 38:04Like as if you're putting your earbuds in, just trying to
- 38:07disconnect from the world. Well, there should have been a
- 38:09rule. Yeah, there should have been a
- 38:11rule. There really should have been.
- 38:12Really should have been. There needs a rule.
- 38:14The first rule is don't scream and yell when you get to
- 38:16Dinosaur Island. The second rule I think, should
- 38:20be don't tune out the world around you when you're on
- 38:23Dinosaur Island. If you're Peter Stormare, you
- 38:26might want to get some sort of acknowledgement that they hurt
- 38:29you. Yeah.
- 38:29You're going to be triple checking, I would say.
- 38:32What I'm doing is I'm peeing right there.
- 38:34Yeah, yeah. What do you need to watch me?
- 38:36Do you drop in the deuce though? I'll do it there.
- 38:39Yeah, I mean, that's you. Well, I just get I'm not going.
- 38:42I'm in Dinosaur Island. What the fuck am I doing here?
- 38:44Right. I agree.
- 38:46But having said all that, Peter Stormare sort of represents the
- 38:50Newman of. The Movie.
- 38:52Would you say am I, am I OK saying that?
- 38:54I think he's Newman is far more neurotic, but he is obviously,
- 38:57again, he's the he. Made fun of the dinosaur.
- 39:00If Schiff is the expendable good guy and Newman Nedry is the
- 39:05expendable bad guy, then Stormar is Newman.
- 39:08Also in the sense that he. Zaps Yes, he does not like these
- 39:13little animals. Yeah, and doesn't take them
- 39:14seriously. Yeah, much like Newman's
- 39:16character. That's true.
- 39:17Yeah, You're not an issue. Sure, character wise, he's the
- 39:19Newman, but yeah, almost like, yeah, move for move.
- 39:22He's doing the same playbook. Yeah.
- 39:24Doesn't work out. Does not work out, no.
- 39:26But it takes a couple tries. Did you like that it took that
- 39:30long to kill him? No.
- 39:33No, I wanted more. You want it?
- 39:34I wanted it faster. Like I wanted them to like swarm
- 39:37and destroy and that's it. Yeah, you got away.
- 39:40Twice. Yeah, it just drags.
- 39:42I think it doesn't need to be that love that he dies though.
- 39:45Did you like the actual death scene itself?
- 39:47How it's shown? Slash not shown.
- 39:50Yeah, I didn't mind that. The blood in the stream, Yeah,
- 39:52like it's it's kind of a classy, if you call it that way to go.
- 39:56I did like that, you know, the practicality again, having
- 39:59appliances attached and having them kind of really be puppeted.
- 40:03And so forth. Yeah, look good.
- 40:04It's better film making to have it behind so you don't have to
- 40:07see the the, you know, like. Yeah, that would be hard to do.
- 40:10Yeah, so I love that 97 and I love the water turning red.
- 40:14I really like all of that. Yeah, I would say it just cut it
- 40:16down. Just needs to be trimmed a
- 40:18little bit. 2 instead of three. Yeah, that's all I'm saying.
- 40:20Yeah, just a little trim, but I overall, I thought very
- 40:22effective. Exciting scene, shitty way to
- 40:25go. It's not great.
- 40:32Now, David, we've, we've talked before about sleep patterns.
- 40:35You get a lot of Ram, you're deep.
- 40:37I'm a little lighter lately, not so much with the third degree
- 40:40burns. That's right.
- 40:41I'll take it out of you. But yes, do you think as deep as
- 40:45you usually sleep? Do you think that five dinosaurs
- 40:49could be in your bedroom and you not wake up?
- 40:53Wouldn't be the first time. You know, it's funny, I didn't
- 40:57clue into that. OK, I know I should.
- 40:59That should be absolutely better than.
- 41:01That I am better than that, arguably, but you would, you
- 41:04would think you would feel that. I just think I'm such a light
- 41:06sleeper that I was like, there's no way.
- 41:07Like the moment there was a disturbance in the airflow, I
- 41:10would be like, what? What's happening?
- 41:11Yeah. I don't think I'm sleeping under
- 41:13those conditions. No.
- 41:14That's another thing. Yeah, if you.
- 41:15Yeah. Yeah, I'm not there.
- 41:16Like I'm not going. First of all, exactly, I'm not
- 41:18going. Did you feel Kelly was scared
- 41:23the Lexi level when the dinosaur pops his head into the tent?
- 41:27No, I don't think she's. I don't think she's as good.
- 41:29You don't like her at all? I don't establish that.
- 41:31She's very good. No she's not and I don't think
- 41:34the character has anything to work with.
- 41:35So some of it is her just again, kid actor, not a fan, but also
- 41:39just the character. There's no real point for her
- 41:41to. Be I'm surprised you haven't
- 41:42mentioned the fact that it felt tacked on.
- 41:43It did it it I did at the beginning.
- 41:45It was on maybe because I attacked you last week.
- 41:48That's right about the tack on situation, yes.
- 41:50OK, yeah, yeah, I'm gun shy. Now, Bizarro Picard for me, it's
- 41:56just easier to say than his acting name.
- 41:58I guess. We could use his name in the
- 41:59movie for sure, but you know who I'm talking about.
- 42:01Yes, yes, Pete, possible weight. Somebody took out his bullets.
- 42:05You don't need to tell me that later.
- 42:06Exactly. That annoyed me.
- 42:08No, Spielberg. Subtly in this movie, nothing at
- 42:11all. Nothing at all.
- 42:13But yeah, so so possible weight runs after the T Rex and we get
- 42:16a the snake. What are you?
- 42:17What the the the snake like Jesus, the snake man?
- 42:22It's a shitty way to go. It's so shitty.
- 42:24It's also boring. And he's a nice guy, sure.
- 42:27David, Yeah, we like his name. He's.
- 42:28Number two, yeah, I don't know. He's got knowledge.
- 42:31Yes, he's gifted. Yeah, it's just silly.
- 42:34But the blood coming down. Yeah, I'm OK with that.
- 42:38Yeah, of course you. Are and then somehow Ian just
- 42:42knows they're in there. I don't know.
- 42:44Yeah, just what I think. I'm like, I got to, I got to
- 42:47turn this off. Like there's just like it's I'm
- 42:48not getting anything out of this movie.
- 42:50We get the T Rex scene and like, OK, that was pretty cool.
- 42:53And then it's like 1/2 hour of nonsense.
- 42:55I'm like, I don't like anything that's happening after this.
- 42:58I'm bored, I'm frustrated. And then we get the tall grass
- 43:02and I'm right back in. It's the coolest scene of the
- 43:04movie. What are your thoughts on the
- 43:06Raptors? It's the only time in the movie
- 43:08where I was in awe. Yeah, real awe.
- 43:11OK, best shot of the movie. The overhead.
- 43:13The overhead. I don't explain it to you, you
- 43:15know. What I'm talking about, there's
- 43:16an audience though. They're listening to the movie.
- 43:19They watch the movie. Yeah, yeah.
- 43:20It's just gorgeous. Just gorgeous.
- 43:22And then picking them off 1 by 1.
- 43:24Great film making. We've already established the
- 43:26Raptors being such a problem. They are a problem and pack
- 43:29hunting and we haven't seen them at all this movie.
- 43:31So an hour and a half into it, it's even a real payoff.
- 43:34Like you're saying, the shot is is captivating because you can't
- 43:37see them. So you have that more of the
- 43:39mystery of the mystique and pulling them down 1 by 1 is
- 43:43terrifying. The problem is it's over in like
- 43:454 minutes. It is great quick, but overall I
- 43:47thought very effective scene in a movie that so far has had so
- 43:50few effective scenes. It's really my favorite scene
- 43:54for sure. Hands down, buddy, and Vince
- 43:55Vaughn puts his hand up to save the day.
- 43:57Yeah, in a movie full of heroes, he's decided to step up.
- 44:00Yep, and he has to get to an area some sort of, I don't know.
- 44:03This is the power station. Effectively, it's the same thing
- 44:05that Ellie did last time. Flick some buttons, get the
- 44:08power back. It's the most elaborate
- 44:09technological achievement in the history of mankind, and it's
- 44:12just like a flick of a switch and you're fine.
- 44:13But the others are still kind of running their own game.
- 44:17We've got Julianne Moore now with the kid.
- 44:20Showcase scene. This is it.
- 44:22Tell me. I've already lamented so much
- 44:25already. What are your thoughts on this
- 44:26scene and how it comes together? Oh my God I hate it.
- 44:30It just felt so written, not as in dialogue, but as an action.
- 44:35Yeah. The way Julianne Moore's
- 44:37character falls, this goes down out the window.
- 44:40Sure. Come on, guys.
- 44:42And the gymnastics of it all, obviously that comes into play.
- 44:46It's perfect, the way she kicks the Raptor.
- 44:49Kelly does. She doesn't have the velocity.
- 44:53Yeah, to hit the Velociraptor that far.
- 44:56Correct. In my opinion, no.
- 44:58I agree. I'm not an expert.
- 45:00I'm not an expert Phillip, on anything.
- 45:02I think I'm going to back you either way.
- 45:04I appreciate that the blind backing, I don't mind a little
- 45:07bit around the Ian part in the in the truck, that's fine I
- 45:11guess, but you are not winning. No.
- 45:13Against these Raptors. And not with gymnastics.
- 45:17Not without AT Rex. Yeah, coming in, gymnastics
- 45:20aren't the answer. And it's just never the answer,
- 45:22Never the answer. Kids, don't do it.
- 45:25Don't do it. Maybe.
- 45:26The ribbon, maybe the ribbon. That's it.
- 45:28I love the ribbon. It's just so silly.
- 45:31And this is your big like final. Big moment man.
- 45:33Like it's your. It's your final battle.
- 45:35Sadly, it's not. Sadly not.
- 45:37That's right, actually, it's the last battle on the island
- 45:39anyway. Yeah, and it's so generic and
- 45:42tacked on. And the joke after you got cut
- 45:45from the team? Come on man, like this sucks.
- 45:48This is mostly a kept problem, yeah. one-on-one off.
- 45:52That's it. If you'd done three, maybe that
- 45:54would have been good. I don't know.
- 45:56And, and, and miraculously, the choppers are like, right there.
- 45:59Oh, yeah. Vaughn makes the call.
- 46:01Stand by in minutes. The choppers there doesn't make
- 46:05any sense to me. It's just like, let's just get
- 46:07to the next moment and the next moment I hated 30 years ago and
- 46:12I fucking hate now. San Diego, Yes, yes, San Diego.
- 46:17It's really stupid. The boat is approaching and now
- 46:20we've got a dinosaur in San Diego.
- 46:22I hated every second of this. We have another John Mcclane
- 46:25moment, Die Hard 5, for those who haven't listened to that
- 46:28episode. Everyone's just staring at the
- 46:31boat, dumbfounded, looking at the radar, looking at it.
- 46:35It's not going to stop it. Nope, no one does anything.
- 46:38They just wait for it to come in.
- 46:40Because it's foggy in San Diego. They say that's possible, but if
- 46:44it's on the radar, you know it like, yeah, it's the opposite
- 46:47Spielberg problem. It's like you can't see it, so
- 46:49it doesn't exist, but you know it exists because you're looking
- 46:51at a radar, the radar that says it's coming at you and it kills
- 46:54the. Hell out of there, it tells you
- 46:55the speed. My gosh, the only thing that I
- 46:57enjoyed in this last half an hour, I have to tell you, as you
- 47:01could probably imagine, is the video store.
- 47:04Yes, and I paused it to see some of the, Oh yeah, some of the
- 47:08movie titles. 97 Oh, here we go. Yeah, we've got Schwarzenegger.
- 47:12He's in King Lear. God, we've got Robin Williams
- 47:15and Jack and the Beanstalks. I did notice and.
- 47:18We've got Tom Hanks in Tsunami, Sir Sunrise.
- 47:21And these are all fake. These are all fake movies but
- 47:23full on posters in the Blockbuster.
- 47:25But anyway, that's I was like, oh, I just love video stores.
- 47:28I miss them so much so I was happy to see them.
- 47:30That's good. You probably noticed that there
- 47:32was a guy. And I don't know if I did notice
- 47:33the guy. Anytime a movie has this like
- 47:37close up of a random extra, basically it's somebody.
- 47:40Yeah, I'm like, it's somebody. So I will then like kind of try
- 47:43and research who the guy is. But yeah, anyway, it's David
- 47:46Kepp. When he.
- 47:47Gets eaten. What did you think of the
- 47:49Japanese fleeing? It's a Godzilla.
- 47:53Yeah, exactly. It's like a wink and a funny ha
- 47:55ha. Oh God, it just made me sick.
- 47:59Ingen guy is dead. We've got, you know, trust in
- 48:01nature. I think somebody says maybe
- 48:04like, OK, I guess that's the this movie's version of life
- 48:08finds a way and it's fucking horrible.
- 48:11One good line. Talk to me.
- 48:13Follow the screams. That is a funny line.
- 48:16Here you go. Yeah.
- 48:17Where are we going? Well, follow the screams.
- 48:18That is funny, yeah. I feel like they instead of
- 48:22thinking of the should, they thought of the could.
- 48:26Yeah. Can we put a dinosaur in a city?
- 48:29Yeah. And they shouldn't have.
- 48:32That's a perfect. And they did.
- 48:33That's a perfect metaphor for this movie.
- 48:35Yeah. They thought all about the ways
- 48:36they can market it and sell it and package it and put it on a
- 48:40lunch box and do all the things they didn't think if they
- 48:43should. They were more concerned if they
- 48:44could. That's how that's the fucking
- 48:46movie right there. You nailed it.
- 48:47That's. What I do, buddy, what I bring
- 48:49fucking. Embarrassing what I bring that
- 48:51this movie gets to be part of what came before it and doesn't
- 48:56have the excuse of having been directed by an idiot.
- 49:00It's true, right? Like most my movies, like
- 49:02Trevero or whatever, making those world movies struggle
- 49:05because they have bad casting and bad writing and bad
- 49:08direction and bad everything. This is a Spielberg movie
- 49:11written by David Kepp, Vince Vaughn.
- 49:13I don't have to name them all like gold.
- 49:15Boom, like all these people are back and you produce such dreck
- 49:19it's embarrassing. I'm embarrassed.
- 49:21I really used to like this movie.
- 49:23I, I didn't hate it. I didn't hate it and I and I
- 49:25stood up for it. Yes, you defended.
- 49:27It far more than I thought. I still think it's somewhat
- 49:29entertaining. The hardest part was watching it
- 49:32right after watching the original.
- 49:34That's the mistake I made. I should have waited.
- 49:36I think that's true. You know we're.
- 49:38In the a month maybe 2. We're in the the the binge
- 49:41watching of television and I think the same where it's like
- 49:44you want to have things fester. I think so.
- 49:47I get a good season finale back in the day of quality shows.
- 49:50Of course, yeah. I want to wait as much as I
- 49:53don't want to wait. Like I want to wait the 6-8
- 49:55months until it comes back because there's anticipation.
- 49:58But in the binge model, it's like I could just kill two
- 50:00seasons in a weekend. It's like nothing means anything
- 50:03because you're just watching it to churn and nothing has any
- 50:07weight. That's why I love Jericho so
- 50:08much, because it was made to go week to week.
- 50:11It would leave you each week hanging like Oh my God I can't
- 50:14wait for next week. This is going to be awesome.
- 50:17But if you're watching it on the span in like I did 10 episodes
- 50:20today and you're like, OK, nothing feels anything.
- 50:23You're just like, I got to tick the box.
- 50:25This movie felt like a lot of ticket of the box.
- 50:27It's frustrating. And I wonder I read years later
- 50:31about the the pterodactyl that they wanted to have pterodactyls
- 50:35in this one, but the technology wasn't there.
- 50:38Got to wait. And then by the time part three,
- 50:41it was in in production, which to my understanding is has
- 50:45pterodactyls in it. Have you seen it?
- 50:46No Oh well, geez. Uh oh.
- 50:49It has pterodactyls from my understand the cover that the
- 50:51poster art. It'll make me do it.
- 50:53Don't make me do it. Sam, Neil's back.
- 50:55OK, that's interesting. Well.
- 50:57You didn't know that. Either I don't know anything
- 50:58about it. I know that there's third actors
- 50:59because that was the cover, the poster art.
- 51:01Was the movie guy. I didn't know Sam Neil was in
- 51:03dress. I thought I hated so much that I
- 51:05just never watched the franchise again.
- 51:08OK I think I actually went and my ex and I went to see the
- 51:11Jurassic World and I was like this sucks and I never saw
- 51:13another one. They get progressively worse.
- 51:15I've gone on record saying it and I stand by that.
- 51:18Fantastic. I'm going to give you a few
- 51:20months though. Break OK before we.
- 51:22Yeah, appreciate it, folks. We're going to give you about a
- 51:25week break before you hear our voices again.
- 51:28I can't tell you how little I cared for this movie.
- 51:31I think it's terrible and it sucks.
- 51:32Dave, your final recollections, as it were similar to Bow on it.

- 52:07If I want sort of something new, you have.
