- 0:00Dot com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:06podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to
- 0:13you by that great news Podcast link is in the show notes.
- 0:17Today's quote comes from Dan Sullivan, Co founder of
- 0:21Strategic Coach, the world's leading entrepreneurial coaching
- 0:25program, an author of more than 50 books and a man who has spent
- 0:29five decades helping people understand how their thinking
- 0:32shapes the reality they experience.
- 0:35He once said your eyes can only see and your ears can only hear
- 0:42what your brain is looking for. Here's a question.
- 0:48Have you ever decided to buy a particular car, say a red Honda,
- 0:53and suddenly that specific car seems to be everywhere.
- 0:57Every parking lot, every intersection, every street you
- 1:01drive down? Here's the thing.
- 1:04They were always there. You just couldn't see them
- 1:08because your brain had no reason to flag them as relevant until
- 1:13it was relevant to you. And that's not a coincidence.
- 1:17That's your reticular activating system, the neurological filter
- 1:22your brain uses to decide what information from the
- 1:25overwhelming flood of sensory input around you actually
- 1:30reaches your conscious awareness.
- 1:32And here's the critical insight it filters based on what you've
- 1:38decided matters and what you've told it to look for.
- 1:43Dan Sullivan's quote is pointing at something with enormous
- 1:46implications for how you live your life.
- 1:49Your brain is not a passive receiver.
- 1:53It's an active filter, and what it filters for is determined by
- 1:58what you programmed it to look for through your beliefs, your
- 2:02expectations, your fears, and your focus.
- 2:06If you wake up every morning expecting the day to be
- 2:09difficult, your brain will find the evidence.
- 2:12Every small frustration will be flagged.
- 2:15Every set back will feel confirming, not because the day
- 2:20is objectively harder, but because your filter is tuned to
- 2:24difficult. If you begin a new project with
- 2:28a clear and specific goal, your brain immediately begins
- 2:32scanning your environment for the people, ideas, and
- 2:34opportunities that are relevant to that goal, and they start
- 2:38appearing almost like magic. But they were always there.
- 2:44Sullivan describes a client who wrote down exactly what he
- 2:47needed for a new venture, and within the same week, the
- 2:52precise person he needed walked into a conversation completely
- 2:56unprompted. Once you define what you're
- 2:59looking for, you begin finding it everywhere.
- 3:03The profound implication is this.
- 3:06What you consistently focus on, expect, and believe becomes the
- 3:11instruction set for your brain's filter.
- 3:14Change the instructions. And you don't just change your
- 3:18outlook, you change what you literally perceive to be
- 3:22available to you in the world. When I started this podcast, I
- 3:27was convinced it would be difficult to keep finding new
- 3:30quotes. But then all of a sudden I
- 3:32noticed quotes everywhere. In books I was reading on
- 3:36billboards and podcasts and YouTube videos and on social
- 3:40media. And then also because of the
- 3:43algorithm, I started getting fed even more quotes in my social
- 3:46feeds. There isn't a day that I don't
- 3:50see several potential quotes I can use in the show.
- 3:54So here's the question. What has your brain been
- 3:58programmed to look for right now?
- 4:02Because I guarantee it's finding it right now, today, in every
- 4:07interaction and every moment your filter is running.
- 4:11The question isn't whether your brain is looking for something.
- 4:15The question is whether you chose what it's looking for or
- 4:19whether it was chosen for you by habit, fear, or by default.
- 4:26You can reprogram the filter deliberately, intentionally,
- 4:30starting today. What you look for is what you'll
- 4:35find. Choose your own adventure.
- 4:40This episode is brought to you by the Great News podcast.
- 4:44Find it. We're all great podcasts are
