- 0:02You are listening to the Cookbook Love podcast with Maggie
- 0:04Green, episode number 3 81.
- 0:10Welcome to the Cookbook Love Podcast, a podcast that celebrates cookbook readers,
- 0:16buyers, collectors, writers and clubs.
- 0:19And now your host.
- 0:20Cookbook author, culinary Dietician, and Cookbook writing Coach Maggie Green.
- 0:31Hi everybody.
- 0:32Welcome back to another episode of the Cookbook Love podcast.
- 0:37Merry Christmas, and I am excited to be here, here in my
- 0:41cookbook Bunker this morning.
- 0:43Obviously not recording this on Christmas day, but close enough that I am enjoying.
- 0:51So much the spirit of the season.
- 0:54Advent and quiet winter morning.
- 0:57We really did have, uh, snow last night and I'm getting ready to head
- 1:04to the kitchen here after I finish recording this episode to, uh, bake
- 1:08some Christmas cookies and enjoy a nice quiet morning here at home.
- 1:15But as they say, one of the most important things to do in the morning is the thing
- 1:21that you need to do most first, and that is record this episode for you.
- 1:28I'm going to make an attempt to record this Christmas episode without any
- 1:36redos or without any, uh, stopping.
- 1:41Restarting, hopefully Scott won't have to do a ton of editing, um,
- 1:47in order to send you the message that I want to send you today.
- 1:52So, um, first of all, cookbooks are why we are here.
- 1:57Cookbooks bring us together as a community of people, many who I've
- 2:02never even met, but who listen to this show on a regular basis.
- 2:08And it is our shared love of cookbooks, the writing, the reading, the
- 2:14collecting that bring us together.
- 2:17It's a shared love that brings us to this podcast.
- 2:21It certainly brings me to the microphone.
- 2:26Every week talking to you and talking to all the lovely cookbook
- 2:33authors that I have interviewed over the past seven years.
- 2:36I am so grateful for this platform.
- 2:40Grateful to be able to connect with you, share with you, and,
- 2:45um, help you and serve you, and be here as someone who is a voice.
- 2:51Of encouragement, a voice of hopefully some fun, a voice of, uh, cookbooks
- 2:58and something that we all love.
- 3:00And so I wanna first of all just say that and, um, think about this
- 3:05community and this shared love of cookbooks, um, bringing us together.
- 3:10Um, the second thing is the, the fruit of this love that we have, that
- 3:15we share here, um, is friendship.
- 3:19People writing books, people who are listening that have uh, published books.
- 3:27And this all starts with this love that we have for each other, for ourselves, for
- 3:33our topics, for what we wanna write about.
- 3:35And we can actually.
- 3:38Use this spark of an idea to create and manifest and bring to life a book from
- 3:44a love that we have, uh, for our topic.
- 3:48And I think that's the most fascinating thing when I think about books.
- 3:51I think I do think about them truly as fruit of something that we create.
- 3:58And, um, I think that they're an incredible thing.
- 4:01I, I always am thinking about books, reading books.
- 4:06Collecting books, writing books, talking about books, uh,
- 4:09fiction, nonfiction, cookbooks.
- 4:12Uh, one of my very favorite things.
- 4:14So, um, when we think about, uh, books, I did wanna share seasonally
- 4:19a couple of books that really.
- 4:22Um, are books I turn to in the kitchen this time of year,
- 4:26but only at this time of year.
- 4:28And I maybe have mentioned them a couple podcasts ago, but I do wanna
- 4:31bring them up again because we have used them and we use them every year.
- 4:35And, um, I keep all my Christmas recipes and magazines and books kind of in
- 4:43one section of my cookbook bunker, so that around the middle of November.
- 4:48I can go pull them all out and start looking at them and feeling the spirit
- 4:53of the season and getting inspired.
- 4:55And the first one is Christmas at River Cottage, uh, by Louis Braiser, Lucy
- 4:59Braiser with seasonal notes and recipes from who fearing Lee Witting stall.
- 5:07This is a British book, um, but it has lovely photos.
- 5:15Uh, ideas for wintertime, making Christmas cards, tree decorations,
- 5:20Christmas wreaths, uh, gift wrap.
- 5:23And then of course a lot of really beautiful, uh, recipes.
- 5:26And we always, um, I shouldn't say we, my husband Warren makes a Christmas pudding.
- 5:33And, um, that's a very British thing to do.
- 5:37And we always think about, um, if you've watched All
- 5:42Creatures great and small on PBS.
- 5:45Uh, Mrs. Hall is the cook and she always makes Christmas pudding.
- 5:48And so, uh, they had a, a great, uh, PBS special, all about the
- 5:53Christmas episodes of all creatures.
- 5:55Great and small if you haven't watched it.
- 5:56But anyway, so the pudding is always a feature of Christmas and
- 6:01it contains, um, dried fruits.
- 6:05Orange peel, lemon peel nuts, pumpkin seeds, and then you
- 6:10soak it and you let it sit.
- 6:12And then, uh, Christmas night you are, when you serve it, you uh, light
- 6:16it with some, uh, rum or brandy and flame it and then eat it as dessert.
- 6:21Sometimes people serve it with a creme on glaze, like a thin custard.
- 6:25Um, I also think of going to the Christmas carol to see the
- 6:28play and Christmas pudding is a big part of that play when the.
- 6:33Um, the family's getting together for Christmas dinner and, um.
- 6:38So this is a beautiful Christmas book, Christmas at River
- 6:40Cottage, again by Lucy Brazier.
- 6:42So, um, the other one is Advent festive German Bakes to celebrate
- 6:48the Coming of Christmas by Anya Dunk.
- 6:52And this book is an amazing book also from a different perspective,
- 6:57but talks a lot about just the baking that takes place in Advent.
- 7:01There's beautiful, uh, photos in this.
- 7:04Wonderful baking recipes.
- 7:06And the chapter dividers are these lovely wood cuts or linoleum cut
- 7:12prints, um, for the middle pages of the, um, the chapters where they go from
- 7:19different chapter to different chapter.
- 7:21So, um, I've been reading that book and today I am gonna make, um, their
- 7:24Christmas, Christmas schnapps, which is a, uh, and I'll have it ready for
- 7:29Christmas, but it is a, uh, vodka infused.
- 7:35Drink that you keep to mix with, uh, they say with orange juice, or
- 7:39you could mix it with, uh, coffee.
- 7:43It contains coffee, beans, gen, uh, vanilla orange and some diara sugar.
- 7:51So it's a sweeter, um, festive cinnamon.
- 7:56Coffee, e flavored infusion.
- 7:59And, um, I look forward to making that.
- 8:00I haven't made it before.
- 8:01I've made the spiced almonds, the cinnamon stars we've made stolen, um,
- 8:07but a lot of really beautiful things in this book, um, titled Advent.
- 8:11So those are the books that I have been enjoying and enjoy every year when it
- 8:16comes to, uh, Christmas and Advent.
- 8:19And, um, thank you so much to those authors for writing those books and.
- 8:24I think it's amazing how books impact us.
- 8:27They become part of what we do, part of who we are, part of our seasonal, uh,
- 8:32cooking and, uh, just incredible that they have shared this, these books.
- 8:38So, um, check those out if you haven't checked them out before.
- 8:43And then the shared love in these books made me realize that really
- 8:50the message of this holiday, uh.
- 8:55That we're celebrating.
- 8:57Um, there's a secular level of the holiday.
- 8:59We've got trees and gifts and decorations and food.
- 9:04But what Christmas at its root is really all about is how the
- 9:08presence of love is found in people.
- 9:11And it's a saving love that descends upon us and walks with us.
- 9:17And it's like a friend that gives us strength and offers us forgiveness.
- 9:22Friends are people who don't expect perfection all the time.
- 9:26They're willing to forgive and, um, this presence of friendship and love.
- 9:32Through, of course, uh, the Christ Child is the image that we have at the
- 9:37root of what Christmas is all about.
- 9:40And I want to, um, share with you a couple of things that really
- 9:47bring this topic to life for me.
- 9:50A couple of them I've mentioned before on the podcast and a
- 9:53couple of them might be new.
- 9:55So the first is the story of.
- 10:01Barrington Bunny in the book called The Way of The Wolf, the Gospel
- 10:07of New Images by Martin Bell.
- 10:09This is a story that was read on National Public Radio maybe 20 years
- 10:17ago, and I heard it one Christmas morning and I've never forgotten it,
- 10:23and I had to even go out and find the book that contained this short story.
- 10:30And, uh, I thought I would share it with you today.
- 10:33So this is called Barrington Bunny.
- 10:35Once upon a time in a large forest there lived a very furry bunny.
- 10:40He had one lo ear, a tiny black nose, and unusually shiny eyes.
- 10:47His name was Barrington.
- 10:49Barrington was not really a very handsome bunny.
- 10:52He was brown and speckled, and his ears didn't stand up right,
- 10:56but he could hop and he was, as I have said, very furry in a way.
- 11:01Winter is fun for bunnies.
- 11:03After all, it gives them an opportunity to hop in the snow and then turn
- 11:07around to see where they have hopped.
- 11:10So in a way, winter was fun for barring.
- 11:13But in another way, winter made Barrington sad for you.
- 11:17See, winter marked the time when all the animal families got together in
- 11:21their cozy homes to celebrate Christmas.
- 11:24He could hop and he was very furry.
- 11:26But as far as Barrington knew, he was the only bunny in the forest.
- 11:32When Christmas Eve finally came, Barrington did not feel
- 11:35like going home all by himself.
- 11:38So he decided that he would hop for a while in the clearing in the center
- 11:43of the forest hop, hop, hippity, hop.
- 11:46Barrington made tracks in the fresh snow hop, hop, hippity hop.
- 11:51Then he cocked his head and looked back at the wonderful designs he had made.
- 11:57Bunnies he thought to himself can hop.
- 11:59And they are very warm too because of how furry they are.
- 12:03Barrington didn't really know whether or not this was true of all Bunnys
- 12:07since he had never met another bunny.
- 12:11When it got dark, too dark to see the tracks he was making, Barrington made
- 12:15up his mind to go home on his way.
- 12:18However, he passed a large oak tree high in the branches.
- 12:22There was a great deal of excited chattering going on.
- 12:26Barrington looked up.
- 12:27It was a squirrel family.
- 12:29What a marvelous time They seem to be having.
- 12:33Hello up there called Barrington.
- 12:36Hello.
- 12:36Down there.
- 12:37Came the reply having a Christmas party.
- 12:40Asked Barrington, oh yes, answered the squirrels.
- 12:43It's Christmas Eve and everyone is having a Christmas party.
- 12:48May I come to your party?
- 12:50Said Barrington, softly.
- 12:52Are you a squirrel?
- 12:54No, what are you then?
- 12:58A bunny.
- 13:00A bunny?
- 13:02Yes.
- 13:03Well, how can you come to the party if you're a bunny?
- 13:06Bunnies can't climb trees.
- 13:09That's true.
- 13:09Barrington said thoughtfully.
- 13:11But I can hop and I'm very furry and warm.
- 13:15We're sorry.
- 13:16Called the squirrels.
- 13:17We don't know anything about hopping and being furry.
- 13:19But we do know that in order to come to our house, you have
- 13:23to be able to climb trees.
- 13:25Oh, well said Barrington.
- 13:26Merry Christmas.
- 13:28Merry Christmas chattered.
- 13:29The squirrels and the unfortunate bunny hopped off toward his tiny house.
- 13:35It was beginning to snow when Barrington reached the river.
- 13:38Near the river.
- 13:39Riverbank was a wonderfully constructed house of sticks and mud.
- 13:43Inside there was singing, it's the beaver's thought, Barrington, maybe
- 13:47they will let me come to their party.
- 13:51And so he knocked on the door, who's out there called a voice, Barrington Bunny.
- 13:57He replied There was a long pause and then a shiny beaver head broke the water.
- 14:04Hello?
- 14:05Barrington said the beaver.
- 14:07May I come to your Christmas party?
- 14:08Yes, Barrington.
- 14:10Beaver thought for a while, and then he said, I suppose so.
- 14:13Do you know how to swim?
- 14:15No.
- 14:15Said Barrington, but I can hop and I am very furry and warm.
- 14:19Sorry.
- 14:20He said the beaver.
- 14:21I don't know anything about hopping and being furry, but I do
- 14:23know that in order to come to our house, you have to be able to swim.
- 14:28Oh, well Barrington muttered his eyes filling with tears, I suppose.
- 14:32That's true.
- 14:33Merry Christmas.
- 14:35Merry Christmas called the Beaver, and he disappeared
- 14:37beneath the surface of the water.
- 14:40Even being as furry as he was, Barrington was beginning to get
- 14:44cold, and the snow was falling so hard that his tiny bunny eyes could
- 14:48scarcely see what was ahead of him.
- 14:51He was almost home.
- 14:53However, when he heard the excited squeaking of field mice beneath the
- 14:57ground, it's a party thought, Barrington, and suddenly he blurted through his tears.
- 15:03Hello field mice.
- 15:04This is Barrington Bunny.
- 15:05May I come to your party?
- 15:07But the wind was howling so loudly and Barrington was sobbing
- 15:11so much that no one heard him.
- 15:14And when there was no response at all, Barrington just sat down
- 15:17in the snow and began to cry.
- 15:19With all his M bunnies he thought aren't any good to anyone?
- 15:24What good is it to be funny, uh, furry, and to be able to hop if you don't
- 15:29have any family on Christmas Eve?
- 15:31Barrington cried and cried when he stopped crying.
- 15:35He began to bite on his bunny's foot, but he did not move from
- 15:40where he was sitting in the snow.
- 15:43Suddenly, Barrington was aware that he was not alone.
- 15:46He looked up and strained his shiny eyes to see who was there.
- 15:51To his surprise, he saw a great silver wolf.
- 15:55The wolf was so large and strong, and his eyes flashed fire.
- 16:01He was the most beautiful animal Barrington had ever seen For a long time.
- 16:06The silver wolf didn't say anything at all.
- 16:08He just stood there and looked at Barrington with those terrible eyes.
- 16:13Then slowly and deliberately, the wolf wolf spoke Barrington.
- 16:18He asked in a gentle voice.
- 16:20Why are you sitting in the snow?
- 16:24Because it's Christmas Eve said Barrington and I don't have any family
- 16:28and bunnies aren't any good to anyone.
- 16:31Bunnies are too good, said the wolf bunnies can hop and they're very warm.
- 16:36What good is that Barrington sniffed.
- 16:39It's very good indeed.
- 16:40The wolf went on because it is a gift that bunnies are given a free
- 16:45gift with no strings attached.
- 16:47Every gift that is given to anyone is given for a reason.
- 16:52Someday you will see why it is good to hop and to be furry and warm.
- 16:57But it's Christmas moan, Barrington, and I'm all alone, and
- 17:00I don't have any family at all.
- 17:03Of course you do replied the great silver wolf.
- 17:06All the animals in the forest are your family.
- 17:10And then the wolf disappeared.
- 17:12He simply wasn't there.
- 17:14Barrington had only blinked his eyes and when he looked.
- 17:17The wolf was gone.
- 17:19All the animals in the forest or my family thought, Barrington,
- 17:23it's good to be a bunny.
- 17:25Bunnies can hop.
- 17:26That's a gift.
- 17:27And then he said it again, a gift, a free gift on into the night.
- 17:33Barrington worked first.
- 17:35He found the best stick he could, and that was difficult because of the snow.
- 17:40Then hop, hop, hippity, hop to the beaver's house.
- 17:43He left the stick just outside the door with the note.
- 17:46That read here is a good stick for your house.
- 17:49It's a gift, a free gift, no strings attached.
- 17:52Signed a member of your family.
- 17:55It's a good thing I can hop, he thought because the snow is very deep.
- 17:59Then Barrington Dug and Doug, soon he had gathered together enough dead leaves and
- 18:04grass to make the squirrels nest warmer.
- 18:07Hop Hop, hippity hop.
- 18:08He laid the grass and leaves just under the large oak tree and attached
- 18:12the message, a gift, a free gift from a member of your family.
- 18:18It was late when Barrington finally started home, and what made things
- 18:22worse was that he knew a blizzard was beginning hop, hop, hippity, hop.
- 18:27Soon, poor Barrington was lost.
- 18:30The wind held furiously and it was very, very cold.
- 18:35It certainly is cold.
- 18:36He said out loud, it's a good thing.
- 18:38I'm so furry, but if I don't find my way home pretty soon I might even freeze.
- 18:45Squeak, squeak.
- 18:47And then he saw it.
- 18:49A baby field mouse lost in the snow and the little mouse was crying.
- 18:55Hello, little Mouse.
- 18:56Barrington called.
- 18:57Don't cry.
- 18:58I'll be right there.
- 18:59Hippity hop in.
- 19:00Barrington was beside the tiny mouse.
- 19:03I'm lost sobbed the little fellow.
- 19:06I'll never find my way home.
- 19:07And I know I'm going to freeze.
- 19:10You won't freeze.
- 19:10Sid Barrington, I'm a bunny, and bunnies are very furry and warm.
- 19:15You stay right here where you are and I will cover you up Burlington.
- 19:21Lay on top of the little mouse and hugged him tight.
- 19:24The little tiny fellow felt himself surrounded by warm fur.
- 19:29He cried for a while, but soon snug and warm, he fell asleep.
- 19:34Barrington had only two thoughts that long cold night.
- 19:38First, he thought it's good to be a bunny.
- 19:41Bunnies are very furry and warm.
- 19:43And then he felt the heart of the tiny mouse beneath him, beating
- 19:47regularly, and he thought All the animals in the forest are my family.
- 19:53Next morning, the field mice found their little boy asleep in the
- 19:56snow, warm and snug beneath the furry carcass of a dead bunny.
- 20:01Their relief and excitement was so great that they didn't even think to
- 20:06question where the bunny had come from.
- 20:09And as for the beavers and the squirrels, they still wonder which
- 20:12member of their family left the little gifts for them on Christmas
- 20:16Eve after the field mice had left.
- 20:19Barrington's frozen body simply lay in the snow.
- 20:24There was no sound except the halling wind, and no one anywhere in the forest
- 20:30noticed the great silver wolf who had come to stand beside that brown lapard carcass.
- 20:37But the wolf did come, and he stood there without moving or saying a word
- 20:44all Christmas day until it was night.
- 20:48Then he disappeared into the forest.
- 20:53So that is the story of Barrington Bunny from The Way of the Wolf, the
- 20:57Gospel, and New Images by Martin Bell.
- 21:01Wonderful Christmas story, and I wanna leave you today with some music.
- 21:09This is a song that I listen to.
- 21:14Almost year round in my car, early in the morning when I pull out of my
- 21:19garage, often in the dark at six or six 15 when I drive and head to, um, St.
- 21:28Agnes Parish, where I, uh, here in our.
- 21:31Neighborhood to go to morning mass, and this is called Night of Silence, and
- 21:37it was written in 1981 at St. Thomas Aquinas College by a music student who
- 21:46was on retreat, and he was starting to doubt whether or not he was doing
- 21:56the right thing, being a music major.
- 21:58He says in his story about writing this song that he was feeling like the study of
- 22:05music was becoming very intellectualized.
- 22:09There's a lot of in his mind and in his head about it.
- 22:11And he had lost the connection to, uh, music from an emotional perspective.
- 22:18And the story of this can be found on his website called Night of Silence.
- 22:24And, um, this.
- 22:27Night of Silence website is also a resource that's dedicated to the season
- 22:31of Advent and, um, the time that happens, uh, prior to Christmas and the way that
- 22:39night of Silence connects, not only to Advent, but then the way that he wrote
- 22:44the music that connects it to the song and the popular Christmas tune Silent Night.
- 22:51So.
- 22:52I wish I could play night of silence for you here on the show, but
- 22:59due to permissions and music and all that kind of stuff, I can't.
- 23:04So what I'm going to do in closing our Christmas episode today is I'm
- 23:08going to read the words to you.
- 23:12You get to listen to the words and then I'm going to put a link
- 23:15in the show notes for you to head over to YouTube and listen.
- 23:19Night of Silence sung by the St. Olaf Choir.
- 23:23Um, they are from Norway.
- 23:26This was recorded live at the Eros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway, and
- 23:33was part of an Emmy award-winning special St. Olaf Christmas in Norway.
- 23:38And um, it's a beautiful Christmas song.
- 23:42And it's lovely to watch the choir members singing it, and I think that this
- 23:47is something that you couldn't really enjoy for, uh, the Christmas holiday.
- 23:52So here are the words to the first, um, three verses of Night
- 23:59of Silence, and I will, uh, leave you with this, um, as we close our
- 24:07Christmas episode of Cookbook Love.
- 24:09So it says Cold are the people.
- 24:13Winter of life we tremble in shadows.
- 24:17This cold, endless night, frozen in the snow, lie roses, sleeping
- 24:24flowers that will echo the sunrise.
- 24:27Fire of hope is our only warmth, weary its flame will be dying soon.
- 24:36Voice in the distance.
- 24:37Call in the night.
- 24:39On when you unfold us, you speak of the light, gentle on the ear, you
- 24:45whisper softly rumors of a dawn.
- 24:49So embracing breathless love, awaits, darkened souls.
- 24:54Soon we will know of the morning spirit among us.
- 25:00Shine like a star.
- 25:02Your light that guides shepherds and kings from afar.
- 25:07Shimmer in the sky, so empty, lonely, rising in the warmth of your son's love,
- 25:16star, unknowing of night and day spirit.
- 25:20We wait for your loving sun.
- 25:26So I want to wish you all a happy holidays, seasons
- 25:30greetings, Merry Christmas.
- 25:33Uh, we will be back next week with a New Year's episode of Cookbook Love podcast.
- 25:39I look forward to 2026.
- 25:42Uh, thank you all for being here, and I hope you all have a
- 25:45wonderful Christmas celebration.
- 25:47And as always, keep loving your cookbook.
