Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_01]: whatever you can do to minimize this stuff that's draining you but you're basically paying attention to what energizes you and chances are that the things that energize you are actually the things you're really good at and that's where your actual career growth happens so there's a correlation between things that bring you energy so you feel more fulfilled at work and it happens to be the places where you are that's your superpowers.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_03]: Welcome to the Beat till you see it podcast, where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_03]: I'm also Logan, Ply's instructor and fitness business coach.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_03]: I've trained thousands of people around the world, and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self doubt.
- 0:44[SPEAKER_03]: My friends, action brings clarity.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_03]: and it's the antidote to fear.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_03]: Each week, my guess will bring bold, executable, intrinsic, and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and be it until you see it.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_03]: It's a practice, not a perfect, let's get started.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_04]: Alright, be at bay, this is great.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_04]: This interview, this episode, this whole thing has me lit up and also, like afterwards, our guest today, and we're just chatting, and she is just such a bright light and such a super power comes through this whole episode.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_04]: And I can say that having talked or before this episode, after this episode.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_04]: And so we're actually talking about that.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_04]: And I think it's really interesting.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_04]: Some of you might be like,
- 1:32[SPEAKER_04]: I don't have any superpowers, we talk about that too.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_04]: We also talk about how you can start to find it, and how the ease of leaning into that can actually change your life.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_04]: And it changed any else life.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_04]: So Daniel George is our guest today, she's the executive coach.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_04]: She all she used to be an environmental lawyer.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_04]: And so I've just like, it's putting that out there because I think it's so interesting how we can, so easily put ourselves in a box or in a track and think that we can't change.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_04]: It's too late for us.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_04]: We've just got to push through.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_04]: No.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_04]: The answer is no.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_04]: They're supporting out there for you.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_04]: There's help out there.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_04]: And there's free resources for you.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_04]: So here is Daniel Drake.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_04]: All right, be it babe.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_04]: This is really fun.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_04]: I recently got to meet our guest today.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_04]: And I was so excited talking to her and then Brad got involved.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_04]: And we just started chatting about life and you know it's going to be a great guest if like you can be fast friends.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_04]: So Daniel, George, can you tell everyone who you are and what you rock at.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_01]: so excited to chat with you today.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_01]: So my name is Danielle Dwork.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_01]: I am zooming in from Salt Lake City, Utah, but from the Washington D.C.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_01]: area and I am an executive and leadership coach, and I'm all about superpowers.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_01]: I'm excited to dive in with you about that today.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_04]: Oh my gosh, I love it and like what a big transition like DC to to Salt Lake.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_04]: No offense to Salt Lake.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_04]: It's so beautiful, but like lots of people to spread out.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_04]: Not so many people.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_01]: It was quite a transition.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_01]: I'm here to support my aging parents, but yes, like parts of DC, I'm happy to leave behind and very lovely outdoors here and you know, we are part of a small
- 3:11[SPEAKER_01]: You're good in the world.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_04]: I love it.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_04]: I love it so much.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, so you said you're an executive coach and you are a big fan of superpowers Is this what you into school for like, is this something we can get a degree in?
- 3:23[SPEAKER_04]: How do we get here?
- 3:26[SPEAKER_01]: No, I totally, like it was just such a, so I'm basically trying to as a lawyer.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_01]: So I went and have many years of doing what I thought I should do, what success I thought looked like, did what my parents thought I should do and I mean, I still love that I did part of that journey.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_01]: But what happened was I was 25 years into my career,
- 3:49[SPEAKER_01]: working at a major organization.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: I was a manager and I just had a wall.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_01]: And that's when I had this big transformation of well, if this is it, if this is my career, then hmm, I don't know, this doesn't quite feel like it.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_01]: That's not what was I had inspired to.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_01]: I was really looking to feel fulfilled.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: And so I went on this long journey.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_01]: We could talk about it by a journey where I eventually figured out that I was not putting my superpowers to work at all.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_01]: And it wasn't until I figured them out that I figured out that my pathway, that's not you for everyone, but my pathway was not to be a manager
- 4:31[SPEAKER_01]: and a lawyer and all of that.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_01]: It was a completely different pathway, but I never would have known it until I figured out my secret sauce.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_04]: Mmm.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_04]: Oh my gosh.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_04]: I think like so many of us can resonate.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_04]: You know, there's a certain there's a certain group of of especially women who were like definitely told like do all these things check all these boxes and then you will fill the field and then we check all the boxes and they're like exhausted check the field.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_04]: What does that mean?
- 5:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, what doesn't even mean, exactly.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_01]: It sounds like a great word, but that's the thing.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_01]: You can, and then you spend time searching and searching and searching.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_01]: And we kind of look in all the wrong places.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_01]: We look on LinkedIn, like, what is that person?
- 5:15[SPEAKER_01]: What am I neighbor to?
- 5:16[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe I need to travel more.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe I need more money.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe I need whatever, you know?
- 5:22[SPEAKER_01]: And we just, we kind of keep trying all these different things on.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_01]: I did.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I was
- 5:27[SPEAKER_01]: all over the map for years, like, I was like, okay, maybe I won't work on this issue.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_01]: I'll work on that issue.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe I should do this, you know, role in my organization or, you know, there were certain things I tried that really, really worked.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_01]: Meditation was something I tried and it's been in my life ever since.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_01]: exercise, same, but there was other things I tried that were like absolutely no goes.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_01]: And I remember talking to you and Brad about this, but a lot of what I was trying was like around mission, like purpose.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, oh, I should volunteer here and I should do that.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_01]: And I actually figured out that spending time on passion wasn't the answer.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not at all about let's not do passionate things.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_01]: But it, you know, fast forward.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_01]: It took me like three years to figure it out.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_01]: I felt like, oh my god, like how many how much time is this going to take?
- 6:19[SPEAKER_01]: And I finally figured out that the answer was had to do with what I was naturally good at.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what I mean when I say super power.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, thank you for defining that because I actually think that like thing we even talked about this, but like I sometimes think that like they're not your purpose or your passion is like such a heavy lift.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_04]: It's like because it kind of feels like there's no going back like once I figured this out, that's it, you know, and then you're like, but I haven't even tried trampoline yet.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know, you know, it almost I think some people have a hard time because it could feel limiting like once you figured it all so there's just so much pressure and then and then what and then it has to make money.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_04]: Which I disagree with, I don't think it really does, but I really, I want to just go back to like, what you're naturally good at.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_04]: This, this is something that I think is really hard for people to recognize because we think it comes so easy to us.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_04]: So why would it even be worth it?
- 7:12[SPEAKER_04]: Why would it even be worthwhile?
- 7:14[SPEAKER_04]: Why would it be valuable?
- 7:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, oh my gosh, you just sort of nailed it.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: And this is when I work with my clients, it's like one of the first things I work with my clients on regardless of what problem or issue or challenge they have is we start with where are you or superpowers?
- 7:33[SPEAKER_01]: And that's because they don't know.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'll let you know.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_04]: I already have 10 lessons going, I don't have any superpowers.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_04]: I was gifted none of those.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_04]: My sister has them all.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_01]: I'm afraid my sister would say that she was like I have new superpowers and I've been spent all these years saying yes to you do But it is so natural.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_01]: They are so natural.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_01]: They're so innate.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_01]: They are hidden to you So if there's one thing that people are listening to you right now I can promise you that you actually unless you've gone to the exercise of actually figuring out your superpowers You do not likely know them
- 8:13[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm telling this to the people who are like, oh, I know my strengths and they'll say things like, I'm strategic and I'm a great communicator.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, that's like a tiny, tiny, tiny little bit of a strength.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_01]: It's really about your innate ability to create impact.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_01]: And it doesn't have to do with a skill that's different.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_01]: A skill is learned.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_01]: Like trampoline.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you can learn.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_01]: You can learn word processing and you can learn, you know, how to put out a podcast and you can learn lots of like project management.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_01]: I've sure people on this call could say, oh, yeah, I can do all those things.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_01]: That's not your secret sauce.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_01]: your secret sauce is in how you create impact in the world.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_01]: And I didn't know it.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_01]: And it was only in my 40s that I was actually able to figure out, oh my gosh, like I have been all the prong have been focused all this time on my skills and my knowledge and thoughts, that's how we're success not saying you don't need skills and knowledge, I mean for sure.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_01]: But my fulfillment, my growth, my career directory, my clarity about who I am as a person, everything kind of comes back to that, and it takes a little bit of work, but you can figure it out and I promise you, that's where you start to feel the energy that helps you feel alive.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, I'm really in because like so at this household, we're big fans of like string fighters.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_04]: We make all of our anybody.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_04]: We're going to hire.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_04]: We want to know what they're like naturally inclined to do because I'm not going to put someone who is not detail oriented on on my on my assistant team.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_04]: I am not detail oriented.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_04]: Everyone who works with me needs to figure it out.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_04]: But I also agree that like some of those things that were strong at work are not necessarily
- 10:02[SPEAKER_04]: born with.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_04]: We kind of like learn them, skilled them over time, and like kind of really lean into those things.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_04]: I also think that a lot of people busy themselves while things are not good at.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_04]: So they get the feedback at work that they're not a great communicator, and they take all these communicating classes.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_04]: And they're like, working on these week that that's going to make you feel so far away from your super power, because at least, at least going into the strength skills you have, at least can feel good at least feel accomplished, but they're not fulfilled.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_04]: So I guess can we talk about like how we figured out, I mean, obviously we need you, but like can we talk about like a little bit of like what are some signs we have a superpower or that we're working with it or working, what do we got?
- 10:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it is, I mean, and, you know, for all, I definitely encourage taking things like strengths assessments because
- 10:54[SPEAKER_01]: that it'll just give you some bread crumbs.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't say how you specifically are good because these assessments can only take it so far that it gives you some indications.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_01]: And I did want to like quickly jump on this whole idea of weaknesses because we are trained from like itty bitty to focus on our weaknesses.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_01]: The minute you come home with a C or even a D on your poor card, your parents are like on you.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_00]: They're like,
- 11:21[SPEAKER_01]: You got to move it up.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_01]: You got to move it up.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_01]: And we're even doing that to our own kids.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_01]: Like now I've kind of been reprogrammed for my own kid.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's fine.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_01]: We all when you're learning in school, it's good to build that basic skills.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_01]: But when you're getting to, you know, your career and especially in your middle or later in your career,
- 11:43[SPEAKER_01]: You kind of have already have a lot of skills at knowledge, and so we have a lot of people who are like, I've got to figure this out and taking courses, and you know, I don't, I don't disparage that.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_01]: I'm all the time, like, sure, constantly grow.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_01]: But your actual growth edge in terms of your full potential, whether you're thinking personally, or you're thinking professionally, is not found in fixing weaknesses.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_01]: Period.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_01]: We know this from the research, so what we want to do is we want to lean into a strength.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_01]: And so the strength is not a skill, so I'll use myself as an example.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_01]: I add a lot of skills in the legal space, in the policy space, and I would try to learn and take some continuing education, and I write it myself on, oh, I knew the latest in whatever is going on in the law.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_01]: And people wouldn't give me some feedback on that, so I think, oh, that's what I needed to do.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: But what was I doing around the office?
- 12:37[SPEAKER_01]: I had a team.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_01]: I would meet with them.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_01]: I would learn about their lives.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_01]: I cared about their growth.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: I spent time thinking, okay, how can we make this person better at what they do?
- 12:48[SPEAKER_01]: And I never gave greetings to that part of my role.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_01]: I was just so focused on more knowledge and more information.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_01]: And really all around me, I had been the person who actually is really good at helping another person in my office and eventually in my coaching business helped them actually really cultivate their own potential and that's through conversation and through encouragement and through a whole bunch of like stuff that I would have
- 13:17[SPEAKER_01]: ever given any sort of like value to I was like, doesn't everybody do that?
- 13:21[SPEAKER_04]: No, everybody gets to know people.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_04]: Doesn't ever know people don't actually do it right.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_04]: I know, but to the point, it's something so natural to you.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_04]: Of course, I want to get to know this person.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_04]: Of course, I want to hear what their goals are.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_04]: Of course, wouldn't that be the thing a team leader does?
- 13:34[SPEAKER_04]: It's like, figure out how to help them out?
- 13:36[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, this is so great.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so you don't so I didn't know that I was like literally I mean I was always helping my friends that helping my family out, helping my colleagues out and I was obsessed with becoming a better whatever knowledge person in the legal space and I wasn't really growing in that space.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_01]: I was okay, but I was an extraordinary and I remember there was a there was a time later my early my coaching career where somebody came to me and they after a coaching session and they were like,
- 14:05[SPEAKER_01]: You're amazing.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_01]: You're so good at what you do.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_01]: I had never heard that kind of feedback when I was in my profession.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_01]: Never.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_01]: No one ever came to me at work and said you are the most amazing lawyer.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, you know, got some good reviews, but like my when I noticed.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_01]: that actually I was I had leaned in to this part of me that I had kind of treated as not very valuable.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh, you're just missed relationship person.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_01]: Well, guess what?
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: That's it.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's relationships.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_01]: It's cultivation.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's all of that stuff.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_01]: And so then suddenly I get the feedback, that's where your superpower is.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_01]: So it does take a little bit of time to figure out.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_01]: It's a
- 14:50[SPEAKER_01]: your strengths is when you feel energy.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_01]: You need to follow the energy.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_01]: At any time, I ever connected with someone and they're helped them out.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_01]: I was getting energy from that.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_01]: When I was trying to figure out a legal issue, I wasn't it wasn't even draining me.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_01]: It was just but that's yeah.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_01]: So you that's the place where you need to go is the energy that is a clue to your superpowers and it's not just relationships strengths.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_01]: There's all these different
- 15:21[SPEAKER_01]: But at the end of the day, it's when you feel energy and when you notice that you lose time.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I agree with that in Gay Hendricks book.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_04]: There's a chapter on the big leap and I remember reading the book going, this chapter makes no sense.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_04]: Why is this chapter in this book?
- 15:37[SPEAKER_04]: Like, why is there a whole chapter on Einstein's time and Newtonian time?
- 15:40[SPEAKER_04]: Like, why is this here?
- 15:42[SPEAKER_04]: And it took me like the fifth read I was going through it and I was like, oh my god, this is what the book is all about.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_04]: And the idea is like, when we are really in the thing that we are meant to do, that like we're just it's just innately part of us, you can bend time time can expand.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_04]: You can get so much out of it.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_04]: You, you can get lost in time time flies by.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_04]: It's not like, my God, it's been seven minutes.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, we're still here.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_04]: You know, like, it's this whole, it's kind of amazing.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_04]: And so I think that's what a great sign everyone can take away is just to start tracking like, what part of my day do I feel more energized or the time flew by?
- 16:19[SPEAKER_04]: Like, what was I doing?
- 16:20[SPEAKER_04]: Just like, just being a observer in your life.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_04]: You don't even have to like, do more than that.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_04]: I would assume right now.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, that's it.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_01]: You just, you just nailed one of the first exercises that I do with my clients is journal if you can for like a week.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_01]: even better longer, but just write down and what people when my clients come back to me and say, I did this.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_01]: There's usually an I'm there.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_01]: There's usually a, you know, oh, I thought I hated all meetings, which many of us do like we're just meeting out, right?
- 16:51[SPEAKER_01]: We're so tired.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_04]: I work at home and somehow I'm in meetings all day.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if I can correct me to, so it's like, I know that there are some of your listeners are like, yes, this is my debate of my existence, like I'm just sitting on meetings, but not all meetings are created equal.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_01]: So what we want to do is sort of like, which makes us sometimes you're in a meeting and you're having a strategic conversation with someone.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_01]: And you're kind of really, you know, getting your brain active, you're thinking, problem-solving, and that conversation was pretty cool.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_01]: And you're like, oh, that goes into, we call the lifts and the drains.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_01]: You have a lift.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_01]: Another call, you're like, going through a to-do list, figuring out project management.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe that's a drain.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_01]: You're like, I am so tired of going through the project management plan.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_01]: And then there's other activities which might be neutral, fine, like it doesn't, but what we want, and this is the key thing, is the researchers who have kind of studied all of this stuff around fulfillment and engagement at work.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_01]: then what you're actually able to move the deal considerably on fulfillment.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_01]: So you don't need for every single hour of your day.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, well, that's mind blowing because I think that's the other thing is that we think that like the whole day should be in fulfillment.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_04]: I should just be in my strengths the whole day.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_04]: I don't, you know, like, and the truth is, is that I've even, like, thought, I'm like, am I?
- 18:21[SPEAKER_04]: I, like, created this whole thing that I love so much.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_04]: a disaster that I've lived, but actually like, if 20% if I spend 20% of my day in my superpower, then even if the other 80% is not, and I'm still moving the needle forward towards filling.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_04]: I love that.
- 18:42[SPEAKER_04]: That is so great.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, it is.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_01]: And this is what you do.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_01]: You've start with just noticing.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of us don't notice.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we're just kind of
- 18:52[SPEAKER_01]: And a lot of what I know you talk about Leslie all the time is just waking up to your life.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_01]: You just got to wake up.
- 18:58[SPEAKER_01]: You got to just start noticing and that's kind of key to this whole exercise that I am talking about here is you cannot just wake up and do your to do listen go through your meetings and then hope in prayer that maybe things start to get more fulfilling.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_01]: You have to start to notice like, okay, that was draining.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_01]: That was, you don't have to like be judging about it.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_01]: You don't have to be like, oh my gosh, I hate my job.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_01]: You don't have to be like that.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_01]: You can be like, okay, I am going to take some time objectively and look because sometimes people come to me and they're like, I hate my job.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_01]: And then they realize there's one part of their job that they hate.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_01]: And there's another part of their job.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_01]: They actually really enjoy.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_01]: They're just not paying a whole lot of attention to it.
- 19:38[SPEAKER_01]: And they could magnify the part of the job they love.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_01]: people to get rid of the part of the job they hate.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_01]: Let's all be honest.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_01]: Like there's parts that we, I don't know, I don't love administration, right, of my business, you know, pandering.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_01]: It just drives me crazy, right?
- 19:54[SPEAKER_01]: So we just have to kind of look for those things that we're able to magnify that the things that bring us energy and that is usually the first step.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_01]: To the creating the creation of more fulfilling work and what I mean by magnifying is more time, maybe or just more tension in that space and what start people have noticed you know again, but to the research is that their actual levels of fulfillment engagement go up in their jobs and it doesn't matter what kind of job it can be the most restrictive job out there and it still breaks more energy if you focus on the 20%.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, this is, I do think it's just great because I think it's so easy for us to go, oh my gosh, I'm going to work and I'm stressed out, so work stresses me out.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_04]: So we just have to like, we've prepared a reason and really what we're not exploring is like, actually, where might I face a wall at work and actually when I have this, when I'm in these meetings, I actually light up because, oh, I'm facing a window.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_04]: So maybe I just need to change
- 20:53[SPEAKER_04]: As for change and view of my desk, or maybe I work in that meeting room as much as I possibly can, you know, like different things like that because sometimes we're just it's all or nothing.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_04]: It's an all or nothing mentality that so many of us were raised to have if it's not perfect.
- 21:06[SPEAKER_04]: It's not good if everything isn't.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_04]: Rosie and unicorns, then it's the wrong path.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_04]: Like if you have one door closed, then you're on the wrong path.
- 21:14[SPEAKER_04]: Like, but I, Danielle, you're giving us so much permission because first we're just observing.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_04]: And I think that's really hard for the perfectionist and overachievers listening about my dears, like in just observation mode of.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_04]: how your day is going and where your energy is uping and flowing.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_04]: And then it's trying to magnify where the energy flow happened.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_04]: And then see what's going on, because maybe we don't have to quit the job.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_04]: You know, like, I read this one book a long time ago.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_04]: I think it was called like Sunnyside Up or something like that.
- 21:43[SPEAKER_04]: I remember the author's name was Amy Spencer and there was a whole chapter on like parking the car or driving away, but not idling.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_04]: get rid of the whole job, but oh, it actually pays all these things I want, so I'm just going to deal with it when what you're saying is like, well, what if we can magnify that?
- 22:03[SPEAKER_04]: And that magnification might actually lead to another role or it might lead to a whole other career.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_04]: You might actually end up like you did switch a, because you leaned in so much, but you don't have to know right away.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_01]: No, and in fact, I would say a lot of people, we all thought, I fall into this trap too, everyone.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_01]: We all fall into it, but the trap is, I will finally be happy when Doc's on that.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_04]: That's why this podcast exists for that win.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_04]: Stop doing that.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_04]: I will finally be happy when.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's like when God and this happens with jobs all the time.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, people have most, I mean, most of they wear American workforce, 70% of the global workforce.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_01]: are not happy in their roles.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_01]: That's incredible.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_01]: It is a staggering and very unsatisfying statistic.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_01]: And that's not just pandemic.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_01]: That is, we have a workplace that is so different than our whatever, grandfather's, our parents from the 50s, 60s and 70s.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_01]: So we're, you know, things are broken.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_01]: I'm at, oh, be the first one to say, we don't have a great workplace for our people, but the thing I
- 23:12[SPEAKER_01]: is you have the power, you have the flexibility to actually empower yourself to make that career actually work for you.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_01]: And the way you do that is first by noticing what energizes you.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_01]: And it could be something as simple as where you sit.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_01]: It could be, I really like that person at work and I'm going to spend more time with them.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_01]: It could be I really like this project and I'm going to spend more time on it.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of different ways that you can do that.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_01]: But that is called job crafting.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_01]: That's the official term and they're going to.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_01]: And then you can, you know, whatever you can do to minimize the stuff that's draining you, but you're basically paying attention to what energizes you, and chances are that the things that energize you are actually the things you're really good at, and that's where you're actually career growth happens.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a correlation between things that bring you energy, so you feel more fulfilled at work, and it happens to be the places where you are, that's your superpowers,
- 24:11[SPEAKER_01]: And then what happens is your job crafting and you're not, maybe you would need to change a job at some point, but you're not waiting for some big change to happen because frankly, you're going to find Drain's, listen, drains and every job.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't matter.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_04]: Oh yeah, guys, no, I mean, even I have so many people are like, I just want to work for myself and I'm like,
- 24:32[SPEAKER_04]: Working for yourself is not like I have a girlfriend who's like, hey, you wanna do a pool day and I'm like, oh no, I'm working today.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_04]: Like, I would love to do a pool day, but like I also have a job that I have to do with a schedule, you know?
- 24:47[SPEAKER_04]: So like, I absolutely am unemployable.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_04]: It's clear I've been asked to quit.
- 24:51[UNKNOWN]: Bye.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_04]: people like me and they're like we don't want to fire you but you're not actually doing the job we want them like no you're correct I job crafted myself out of a job is what I did but I think like it's you know we like to think the grass is greener and it's just it's not but the people I've seen who who work at other places who have have really free to the life that they're filled or like that it just seems to be enjoyable and have a level of happiness they are the ones leaning into their superpowers they have it
- 25:22[SPEAKER_04]: you know she'd been frustrated her job for a long time and she said I just told my team I'm no longer doing these things for you.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_04]: You are capable of doing these things.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_04]: Here's where I come in for your job and she basically changed what her job is and even though because she couldn't change her job like she's like I really can't go anywhere else and I really can't change these things.
- 25:39[SPEAKER_04]: So I'm going to do these things here and she's having a really great time.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_04]: Is it perfect?
- 25:43[SPEAKER_04]: No, just still have the same job.
- 25:45[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, but she's doing the things that she's like I'm just really
- 25:49[SPEAKER_04]: You can't take these things away from me, like this is what I'm the strongest at.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_04]: And I, so what I, what I love what you're saying is we're not waiting.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_04]: You are more control of half the field.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_04]: You can be than you think.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_04]: And jobs are going to suck in a lot of places, but if you are aware of how you are in your superpower, you can really create your own path.
- 26:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, and I mean, we have it if you are a so-called white color worker, your ability to craft your job as in make shifts and changes to how you deploy your work.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't mean you're, you're saying I'm not going to do my basic job responsibilities, but there's just tremendous flexibility and how we conduct ourselves.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_01]: So which friend it was exactly right.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_01]: There are things I'm not going to do anymore.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to do that.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_01]: You can do that.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to get it done, but it's not going to be necessarily in my play.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_01]: The kinds of things people are doing are, they start to change the number of meetings or the nature of the meetings that they're having.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_01]: If you're a one-to-one person, more one-to-one and less group,
- 26:52[SPEAKER_01]: If you don't have enough time on your calendar to strategize, you really enjoy sort of getting into the data, then you need to like craft time around having that space and time because you're going to actually bring a better strategic mind because you're not sitting in meetings all day, there's lots of different ways you can job craft.
- 27:11[SPEAKER_01]: But it starts with you.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_01]: It starts with you knowing where my energize.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_01]: What do I enjoy?
- 27:16[SPEAKER_01]: Where am I drained?
- 27:17[SPEAKER_01]: What's neutral?
- 27:18[SPEAKER_01]: And then you just move the needle.
- 27:19[SPEAKER_01]: And you might be at, you might say, hey, I think I'm at 20% already, which is great.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_01]: If you are, I want to speak 30%.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_01]: I want 30% of my week to be in that strength or energy zone.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_01]: And here's what I'm going to do to do it.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_01]: And I promise you, at 10% might seem like a little number.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, oh, it's just 30%.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, what?
- 27:40[SPEAKER_01]: you will notice it, you will notice it, you will start to go more fulfilled, you're going to be more engaged in the job, people are going to notice your energy, and then you're going to actually start to sort of deal with that career growth that a lot of people are seeking, they want to, like when you said perfectionist, like a lot of people want to deliver high-performing work.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_01]: They're trying to bring their best to work.
- 28:02[SPEAKER_01]: The problem is is that they're bringing their best selves to work in terms of like quality of work.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_01]: But they're actually kind of like not really deeply engaged.
- 28:12[SPEAKER_01]: We need to see your superpowers come out.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_01]: And that's where the 20 to 30% becomes a complete sea change.
- 28:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 28:20[SPEAKER_04]: So, and also, like, I recently interviewed someone who is like helping people, like,
- 28:25[SPEAKER_04]: Pervent, you know, like it's like layoff proof or something like that, like if you get laid off your life, it's gonna be okay.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_04]: Because she had said, and I didn't read, I did not double check this quote, but I, it feels right.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_04]: She said it by 2032, work will be different than we think because of AI, right?
- 28:40[SPEAKER_04]: And I like, I'm not someone who's like, AI is gonna like be everything because I really don't really don't think so.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_04]: I think there's a lot that they have to learn to have even healthier to monetize it.
- 28:50[SPEAKER_04]: But I also think that like it's already here like apps and tools like that already use it.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_04]: We've been using a project management tool that basically has AI built into it with these different things.
- 28:59[SPEAKER_04]: So I do think work is going to change and where I keep going back to something that I remember I think with Seth Goat and who said it got 20 years ago that I heard this is like,
- 29:08[SPEAKER_04]: You know, you cannot, like, even though AI is creating stuff, they're creating stuff up things that are existing.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_04]: If you are creative person, if you are in your superpower, that is not something a robot can take away.
- 29:21[SPEAKER_04]: Like, that is not something AI can take away.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_04]: And I think like now more than ever, the more we all figure out what our superpower is, the more layoff proof we really are.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_04]: And because someone's going to need to run the AI.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_01]: Somebody asked to run the A, but I had a claim just a few days ago, she did in fear of a layoff.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, it was a real real fear.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, she was given time.
- 29:44[SPEAKER_01]: Like we have this much time.
- 29:45[SPEAKER_01]: And then she came back to me proudly and said, I just made myself indispensable.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_01]: So she figured out a way to bring her superpowers forward so that she had to be the person on the team to help with something and she's got all these superpowers and she figured it out.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_01]: So part of like what we're talking about here is this idea of career grip, this idea of like not being stagnant.
- 30:11[SPEAKER_01]: I come at it from a perspective of nobody wants to go to job and hate it.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_01]: Like we want to love our jobs.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_01]: We do not want to go to work and just be like zombies, do we?
- 30:20[SPEAKER_01]: For most people, I'll bet most of your listeners, I'm not all of them.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_01]: It is not just about a paycheck and so we really, really want to have, I mean, ideally love our work and that's where I come from.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_01]: But if you're also thinking, I want to love my work and I want to grow.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_01]: I want to think about where my career is going.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_01]: Then yeah, by all means, figure out your superpowers.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_01]: I'm very quickly because it is not about skills and strengths.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody else has those skills and strengths too.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_01]: And of course, AI is coming to pick them up.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be found in this secret way.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's an usual way for you to manage people to be a strategic thinker to influence others.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, these are all what strengths are.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_01]: They're soft.
- 31:05[SPEAKER_01]: But they're crucial and you probably don't even know you're doing this, which is why you have to figure them out.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_04]: Can you tell me like what are just like, like, what are some superpowers you've seen in clients?
- 31:18[SPEAKER_04]: Like, just like, like, neem them off because I think some people are like, thinking of superpowers has to be like, I can see, like, I don't know that people can like articulate what they think a superpowers
- 31:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I did a bit of a process.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_01]: So I'll just pull out some of my big favorites.
- 31:32[SPEAKER_01]: And these are ones I see in my regular clients, Achieverse.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_01]: So Achieverse are people who are basically laser focused on getting projects done.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_01]: It is not just about the project.
- 31:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's that they are tireless workers to reach a result.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_01]: And they might have examples of that, like degrees, they might have achieved our,
- 31:52[SPEAKER_01]: projects, but the achievers are the ones who are the ones who actually get the job done, and then you have the examples of that.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_01]: Another example would be in the influencing category, we have a whole set of influencing.
- 32:06[SPEAKER_01]: People are great activating the new project, mobilizing resources and mobilizing people to actually ramp something new up.
- 32:15[SPEAKER_01]: Another example would be the developer, which is basically someone who is great helping someone else reach their pull potentials.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_01]: These are the managers.
- 32:23[SPEAKER_01]: These are the leaders who are great at cultivating teams.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_01]: Another example with these are the managers.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_04]: We hope that every manager has a development.
- 32:30[SPEAKER_01]: We hope, but there is so be terrible managers.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_01]: It's unbelievable.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway and so yeah if you're a great manager my goodness you are marketable like that's a transferable skill because we don't have enough great managers or the ability to bring a team together around a common goal yeah it's great to be able to project manage but it's the person who's really able to sort of bring a team together and say we are all rowing the same way and that's a lot of special little powers you bring
- 32:58[SPEAKER_01]: to get everybody usually to disparate and very diverse group of people to say together we're doing.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_01]: And then I'll final example and there's in my world, there's 34 of them.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm not going to, you know, go through all of them, but the final couple would be one is the person in the room who's the strategic thinker who's really able to figure out that pathway.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_01]: They're thinking, hey, we have this challenge of this problem.
- 33:22[SPEAKER_01]: They're the one who just incisively can cut through all the noise and figure out what the pathway is.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_01]: And they might be getting their first before everyone else and they don't understand why no one else it figures it out.
- 33:34[SPEAKER_01]: And then the final one I'll share is the person who is the
- 33:42[SPEAKER_01]: cultivating new things, innovation, sometimes that's the ad people in the sales people, but sometimes that's just, you know, you're just a person who are saying, I have an idea.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_01]: Those are just a matter.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_01]: And then it was no skills or strengths.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, no skills or knowledge and anything I just share with you.
- 33:59[SPEAKER_04]: I agree.
- 34:00[SPEAKER_04]: I'm the idea at around here and the and Brad box round going, no, that will take, we'll take this idea and that idea, we can do it.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_04]: I didn't want to spend that much money on that idea like I just thought it'd be like this easy thing to do.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, but like it's quite fun and I had no idea Because I was like, why can't I finish anything?
- 34:21[SPEAKER_04]: You know why do I have all these I my head is full of ideas and I just feel like I can't finish anything and actually it's because that's not my strength.
- 34:29[SPEAKER_04]: It's not my superpower to finish anything.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_01]: You're like, you're the person in the room who generates, and I'm sure that in your life and your business, you could point to specific things you're doing that we're generated by you that thing and this is a little bit of advanced thinking in the in the strength zone, but you may feel like your weakest something, but actually it's actually a superpower that's being overextended, so for my ideators, I'll say they'll still come to being Sam, so we get this this mess and what it is is that if you're ideating and you have a lot of ideas and you're just constantly throwing them out,
- 35:01[SPEAKER_01]: the over extension or over use of a strength is just to know that only a couple of your ideas are going to move forward and that's it.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_01]: So sometimes people come to me and they're like, oh, I'm so weak at this and then we'll look at their strengths and talk and I'm like, you know what?
- 35:15[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it's a weakness.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's just that you are trying to exercise a strength a little bit more and what we want to do is we want to put the strength super power in the strength zone.
- 35:26[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes we may be overexcending something.
- 35:28[SPEAKER_01]: So don't think you're weak just because
- 35:31[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I just see a too often, especially with my women clients, like, they come in, they're like, I'm so bad, like, all use myself as an example, that I used to think as my relationship strengths as my weakness that I was too sought to emotional.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_01]: And in fact, what it was was that I didn't have any space or the time in my workplace, which is very, you know, kind of masculine and, you know, very corporate that there was no space for me to be cultivating my emotional intelligence in there, it was just.
- 36:05[SPEAKER_01]: get things done, but in a coaching space, all of my emotional intelligence was really welcome.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_01]: So you just want to be really aware that it may not be a weakness.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_01]: It may be a strength, it's just you have to figure out the right place for it.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_04]: That makes so much sense, Danielle, because like,
- 36:21[SPEAKER_04]: It's the same as me time people like what you're not really supposed to overwork out like you might actually be working out too much and that's why you have aches pains injuries high cortisol levels terrible sleep like there is a balance so that to me makes so much sense this is really.
- 36:38[SPEAKER_04]: Refreshing and quite cool and also approachable and I just want to like highlight like it really is a beat till you see it because you get to start an observation mode and then you get to play in a low percentage you guys of and that's so so great for the perfectionist who are practicing recovery to be like.
- 36:57[SPEAKER_04]: Just like what's this percentage and how can I dial it up a little bit more and a little bit more at a time and tell oh my gosh You are totally loving what your your day is like and and we I just thank you Danielle for just highlighting all of this for us We're gonna take a brief break and we're gonna find out what people can find you follow you and find out their superpowers with you All right Danielle, where do hang out where can they learn their super power?
- 37:17[SPEAKER_04]: What do you have for us?
- 37:19[SPEAKER_01]: I, you pineapple LinkedIn, and after the date, please reach out, connect with me on LinkedIn.
- 37:24[SPEAKER_01]: I have a gazillion resources there on everything from leadership to confidence to superpowers.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_01]: That's the best place to find me where I hang out.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_01]: I also, I'm on a couple of other places, and you can find me on my website at time for well-being.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_01]: The number four time for well-being.com.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_04]: Perfect.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_04]: Wonderful.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_04]: We all go check her out on LinkedIn and then go check her website for those free resources.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_04]: We love that.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_04]: you have given us some great stuff already.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_04]: But bold, executable, intrinsic targeted steps people can take to be it till they see it, what do you have for us?
- 38:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 38:02[SPEAKER_01]: So just follow your energy.
- 38:06[SPEAKER_01]: That's where your superpowers live.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_01]: The clarity doesn't come from thinking hardy, harder, confidence doesn't, from faking it.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_01]: I know you, this is something you said a lot.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_01]: They come from activating what's true about you.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_04]: Mmm, that's beautiful.
- 38:22[SPEAKER_04]: I couldn't agree more.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_04]: I really, it's really, you know, I had someone at the end of another podcast go, you're so confident and I'm like Can't like and like how did you get to be so confident and I'm like, I think I just just keep trying to do what I said it was gonna do Every day it doesn't come you don't you don't get deemed it
- 38:41[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_01]: No, no.
- 38:43[SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, honestly, I, I, I have led many people to this confidence journey.
- 38:49[SPEAKER_01]: And we all are waiting for this mindset to show up.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_01]: And we know again, I'm a research based gal.
- 38:58[SPEAKER_01]: Confidence is not built for the mindset.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_01]: It is built through action and failure and success and getting right back up.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_01]: And I would say I've been gone through that gamut like many of your listeners have.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_01]: It sounds like you have to, but it's not through waiting for it.
- 39:15[SPEAKER_01]: It is really that action.
- 39:17[SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
- 39:17[SPEAKER_04]: Yes.

- 39:27[SPEAKER_04]: Like, thank goodness.
- 39:27[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I'm sure you were great environmental law, lawyer, and the environment needed you.
- 39:32[SPEAKER_04]: But I think all of us ladies here, and the few good men who listen need you do.
