Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Outspoken. It's your dose of the
- 0:05Speaker 1: hottest influencer and pop culture news twice a week. I'm
- 0:09Speaker 1: Kate Torber. And I'm Sophie Torber. And coming up on
- 0:11Speaker 1: today's show, Kayla Itzinas takes full control of her fitness empire.
- 0:16Speaker 1: A Reddit user claims a well-known influencer's boyfriend got her pregnant.
- 0:21Speaker 1: And are influencers being censored when talking about Dubai? But first,
- 0:26Speaker 1: Veruca Salt is having twins. Kate, it comes just a
- 0:30Speaker 1: week after she announced her shock pregnancy. Yeah, Veruca dropped
- 0:34Speaker 1: the news on Tuesday just after our episode went live
- 0:37Speaker 1: where we spoke about her pregnancy. When I saw the video,
- 0:40Speaker 1: I was like, you've got to be kidding. I couldn't
- 0:42Speaker 1: believe it. I mean, you can't make this shit up.
- 0:44Speaker 1: It's great for content. Now, Veruca shared the news on TikTok.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Let's take a listen to what she said.
- 0:50Speaker 2: There's twin babies inside me.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Oh my God, there's big fat fucking twin babies inside me.
- 0:58Speaker 1: And mummy has to have a type for fucking men
- 1:01Speaker 1: that are over 6'6. Like, they're going to be humongous.
- 1:04Speaker 1: They're going to be fucking humongous. And I'm so petite
- 1:08Speaker 1: and teeny tiny and skinny.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Like, what the fuck?
- 1:12Speaker 1: Oh, my God. Everyone has been wondering who the father is,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and she's given a big clue there. a guy that's
- 1:19Speaker 1: over 6'6. So I think everyone's going to be looking
- 1:21Speaker 1: out in the background of her videos for a very
- 1:23Speaker 1: tall guy. Well, she's touched on the fact that she's
- 1:25Speaker 1: got a type. She likes tall guys. So I feel
- 1:29Speaker 1: for her as she gets onto the later stages of
- 1:31Speaker 1: her pregnancy because it's probably not going to be pleasant. Yeah,
- 1:34Speaker 1: and I was just thinking about Amy. She would have
- 1:36Speaker 1: been good to have on this episode because she could
- 1:38Speaker 1: have given us an insight into what it's like actually
- 1:40Speaker 1: carrying the baby of a very tall man. Her husband
- 1:43Speaker 1: is 6'5, so a bit shorter than the father of
- 1:45Speaker 1: Rurika's baby's I mean, she only had to carry one though.
- 1:48Speaker 1: And that looked incredibly uncomfortable. I just, I have so
- 1:51Speaker 1: much respect for mums of multiples. It is a massive job.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Like I don't know how they do it. I know
- 1:57Speaker 1: growing up, people would always be like, wow, your mum's
- 2:00Speaker 1: done an amazing job. And I'd be like, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:03Speaker 1: And it's not until I had a child that I
- 2:04Speaker 1: was like, she really has. Like that would have been
- 2:06Speaker 1: so difficult. Now in a subsequent video, Veruca shared her
- 2:11Speaker 1: reaction during the ultrasound and And she said she doesn't
- 2:14Speaker 1: understand how this happened to her. I mean, this is
- 2:17Speaker 1: off the back of her explaining in her initial pregnancy
- 2:20Speaker 1: announcement video that she was literally on the pill and
- 2:24Speaker 1: drinking at the time. So it's all been a bit
- 2:26Speaker 1: of a whirlwind for her. Yeah, she kept asking the radiographer, like,
- 2:29Speaker 1: are you sure? Could that just be a cyst? Like
- 2:31Speaker 1: you could tell she was just absolutely taken aback by
- 2:35Speaker 1: this news. It would also be difficult news to receive
- 2:39Speaker 1: on your own because it seems like the father wasn't
- 2:42Speaker 1: there during the scan. You almost just couldn't believe it.
- 2:45Speaker 1: You'd feel like you're in a dream. I just couldn't
- 2:46Speaker 1: wipe the smile off my face watching her videos because
- 2:49Speaker 1: I mean, she is incredibly funny, but also just so
- 2:52Speaker 1: excited for her to become a mum again, because we
- 2:55Speaker 1: touched upon it in Tuesday's episode, but she very tragically
- 2:58Speaker 1: lost her son Cash at six weeks old to SIDS.
- 3:02Speaker 1: And while she said that this pregnancy has come as
- 3:04Speaker 1: a surprise to her, it was something that she was
- 3:07Speaker 1: really chasing last year. She was undergoing fertility treatment and
- 3:11Speaker 1: that didn't work out for her at that stage. So
- 3:14Speaker 1: it is lovely and exciting to see her going through this.
- 3:17Speaker 1: It is really beautiful. And I am really excited to
- 3:19Speaker 1: follow along on her pregnancy journey. I think it will
- 3:22Speaker 1: be an interesting one. She said at the moment that
- 3:24Speaker 1: she barely feels pregnant. She said she's a bit bloated
- 3:26Speaker 1: and has sore nipples, but that's about it, which I
- 3:29Speaker 1: think is why it's even harder for her to get
- 3:31Speaker 1: her head around the fact that she's having twins and
- 3:34Speaker 1: She said that she thought with a twin pregnancy, you
- 3:36Speaker 1: would feel it on a whole new level. Well, that
- 3:37Speaker 1: is what you hear. You're told that you're going to
- 3:39Speaker 1: feel really bad. I mean, hopefully she continues to stay
- 3:42Speaker 1: well during her pregnancy. The comment section was pretty interesting.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Abby Chatfield commented, Veruca, please. It's something new every day.
- 3:50Speaker 1: I can't keep up. Congrats though, queen. So exciting. It's
- 3:53Speaker 1: pretty funny though, because you would assume the most shocking
- 3:55Speaker 1: part of Veruca's TikTok was the fact that she was
- 3:58Speaker 1: having twins. But a lot of people noticed that her
- 4:00Speaker 1: name actually isn't Veruca Salt. So it's The top comment was, wait,
- 4:04Speaker 1: your name is Kimberley? Why does she kind of look
- 4:07Speaker 1: like a Kimberley though? It sort of suits her. I mean,
- 4:11Speaker 1: clearly Gen Z aren't that familiar with Willy Wonka because,
- 4:13Speaker 1: of course, Veruca Salt is a character from that movie.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Her real name is actually Kimberley Sterling. I have zero
- 4:19Speaker 1: idea as to when Josh and I are actually going
- 4:21Speaker 1: to fly home. Saffron Barker has revealed she doesn't know
- 4:25Speaker 1: when she'll return home to Dubai. The UK influencer is
- 4:28Speaker 1: currently holidaying in Australia and but was supposed to fly
- 4:31Speaker 1: back to the embattled city this week. Like many others,
- 4:34Speaker 1: Saffron's travel plans have been thrown into chaos because of
- 4:37Speaker 1: the war in Iran. Now, Soph, before we get into
- 4:39Speaker 1: Saffron's update, can you get listeners up to speed with
- 4:42Speaker 1: why she moved to Dubai? Yeah, Saffron really shocked her
- 4:44Speaker 1: followers last year when she announced that she was going
- 4:47Speaker 1: to be moving to the Middle East with her new boyfriend,
- 4:49Speaker 1: Josh Milne. And this move really came out of nowhere
- 4:53Speaker 1: because Saffron had just settled into her dream home down
- 4:56Speaker 1: the road from her parents in Brighton She's incredibly close
- 5:00Speaker 1: with her family. And it turns out that it was
- 5:03Speaker 1: actually Josh who wanted to relocate to Dubai. So not
- 5:07Speaker 1: only does the Scottish model's parents live there, but he
- 5:10Speaker 1: spent a large chunk of his childhood living in Dubai
- 5:13Speaker 1: and also Oman. Yeah. And originally Saffron said that she
- 5:16Speaker 1: would be splitting her time between Dubai and the UK. However,
- 5:19Speaker 1: Dubai really has become her main base. They have rented
- 5:22Speaker 1: out an apartment there. And at the end of last year,
- 5:25Speaker 1: it became very evident that she wasn't coping with being
- 5:27Speaker 1: so far away from her family. In a YouTube video,
- 5:30Speaker 1: she admitted that she was struggling with the distance and
- 5:33Speaker 1: she just seemed off in a lot of her videos. Yeah,
- 5:36Speaker 1: very down. As a big fan of Saffron, I could
- 5:38Speaker 1: definitely see the change in her personality. And yeah, she
- 5:43Speaker 1: did open up that she was really struggling with the
- 5:45Speaker 1: move and being away from her family. And it had
- 5:48Speaker 1: put extra pressure on her relationship with Josh. And- I've
- 5:51Speaker 1: always wondered what it is about Dubai that attracts so
- 5:54Speaker 1: many influencers like Saffron to actually move there. And it
- 5:57Speaker 1: turns out there is more to it than the hot
- 6:00Speaker 1: weather and being a global travel hub. So since the
- 6:02Speaker 1: conflict in Dubai, it's become widely reported that the UAE
- 6:06Speaker 1: government has strategic programs in place to attract influencers to Dubai.
- 6:10Speaker 1: So The government even has a special, what they call
- 6:14Speaker 1: golden visa for influencers and content creators that gives them
- 6:18Speaker 1: a 10-year residency in the UAE. They also have this
- 6:23Speaker 1: special creators hub and workspaces available for influencers and content creators.
- 6:28Speaker 1: But the biggest drawcard is the fact that you don't
- 6:31Speaker 1: have to pay tax on your personal income. So it's
- 6:33Speaker 1: likely that those factors played a big part in Saffron
- 6:37Speaker 1: and Josh relocating to Dubai. Wow, that is massive. I've
- 6:40Speaker 1: heard there's also a lot of incentives for teachers going
- 6:44Speaker 1: over to Dubai to teach English. I think there's similar
- 6:47Speaker 1: benefits when it comes to tax. Yeah, and that's because
- 6:49Speaker 1: about 90% of the population in the UAE are expats.
- 6:53Speaker 1: So that's obviously a big demand to teach English there. Now,
- 6:57Speaker 1: as you mentioned, Soph, at the start of this segment,
- 6:59Speaker 1: Saffron is still holidaying in Australia. So she embarked on
- 7:03Speaker 1: the trip in the middle of February to surprise her
- 7:05Speaker 1: school friends who live on the Gold Coast. Now, she
- 7:08Speaker 1: was holidaying in Queensland when Iran began attacking Dubai with
- 7:11Speaker 1: drones and missiles. And at the time, rather than acknowledging
- 7:15Speaker 1: the situation going back on in her new home, she
- 7:18Speaker 1: posted a rather steamy shower selfie with her boyfriend, Now,
- 7:22Speaker 1: the backlash was swift and it forced Saffron to finally
- 7:25Speaker 1: make a comment about what was going on in Dubai.
- 7:28Speaker 1: So she claimed that she'd been out of service and
- 7:30Speaker 1: confirmed her family and friends in Dubai were in fact safe.
- 7:33Speaker 1: We had a bit of a chuckle about this one because-
- 7:36Speaker 1: her mum claimed to be taking care of her social
- 7:40Speaker 1: media while she was in Australia. And everyone's like, hold
- 7:43Speaker 1: on a second. Why would you share a photo of
- 7:45Speaker 1: your daughter and her boyfriend in the shower? Like things
- 7:48Speaker 1: really weren't adding up. It feels like it's been back
- 7:50Speaker 1: to business for Saffron since she made that update. So
- 7:52Speaker 1: she's continued to keep her 2 million TikTok followers up
- 7:55Speaker 1: to date with her travels around Australia. I've been loving
- 7:58Speaker 1: the vlogs. What shocked me though was seeing Saffron catching
- 8:02Speaker 1: up for lunch with none other than SofaDofa. SofaDofa actually
- 8:06Speaker 1: shared about this and I was like, how do they
- 8:08Speaker 1: know each other? Is this just that they've slid into
- 8:11Speaker 1: one another's DMs and formed a friendship that way? Yeah,
- 8:14Speaker 1: that blew my mind. It was like when UK YouTuber
- 8:16Speaker 1: Elle Swift was just hanging out with Sarah's Day when
- 8:19Speaker 1: she was in Sydney. It just didn't seem right. It's
- 8:21Speaker 1: like two worlds colliding. Yeah, I like to keep my
- 8:23Speaker 1: Australian and UK influences separate because I usually go easier
- 8:27Speaker 1: on the UK influences. They seem to have a bit
- 8:29Speaker 1: of a pass card from me. Now, the number one
- 8:33Speaker 1: question on Saffron's followers' lips is when will she be
- 8:36Speaker 1: returning to Dubai? So one follower wrote under a video,
- 8:40Speaker 1: will you go back to Dubai? To which she responded, yes,
- 8:43Speaker 1: of course, just not sure when. She then confused her
- 8:47Speaker 1: followers by uploading a reel saying that she had returned
- 8:50Speaker 1: home to the UK for 48 hours to shoot a
- 8:52Speaker 1: campaign for her pajama brand Girl Uniform. Now, she ended
- 8:57Speaker 1: up adding a disclaimer to the subsequent YouTube video about
- 9:00Speaker 1: the PJ campaign saying, if you're up to date with
- 9:03Speaker 1: my vlogs, you'll know I'm currently in Australia. I am
- 9:05Speaker 1: still in Australia. This vlog was filmed a few weeks ago,
- 9:08Speaker 1: but I couldn't upload it until now due to secret
- 9:11Speaker 1: projects you're about to see. When I saw the YouTube
- 9:14Speaker 1: pop up, I was really confused because I was like, oh,
- 9:16Speaker 1: hang on. So she's gone from Australia to the UK.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Does that mean she's not going back to Dubai at all?
- 9:21Speaker 1: If I was her, I probably wouldn't have put it out.
- 9:23Speaker 1: But It seemed like she had to put the video
- 9:25Speaker 1: out because it coincided with a Mother's Day campaign for
- 9:28Speaker 1: Girl Uniform. As someone who follows her content pretty closely,
- 9:31Speaker 1: I'm ashamed to say that I actually knew that this
- 9:33Speaker 1: was filmed before she went to Australia. I was like,
- 9:35Speaker 1: oh yeah, she said this year. That's very sad. It
- 9:37Speaker 1: is very sad. Now, this week, Saffron finally admitted to
- 9:40Speaker 1: her followers that she doesn't know when she'll return to Dubai. However,
- 9:44Speaker 1: it's not for the reason that you would think. So instead,
- 9:47Speaker 1: she claimed that her boyfriend, Josh... had spent the night
- 9:50Speaker 1: in emergency with a bulging disc in his back and
- 9:53Speaker 1: was awaiting an MRI scan. Let's take a listen. Originally
- 9:57Speaker 1: we were actually supposed to fly home today. That's This
- 10:15Speaker 1: is genuine. He has had a lot of trouble with
- 10:17Speaker 1: his back whilst he's been in Australia. It seems to
- 10:19Speaker 1: have been quite debilitating. It'd be awful to go through
- 10:22Speaker 1: this while you're on the other side of the world. Yeah,
- 10:24Speaker 1: but it's a convenient excuse to give. And it's left
- 10:28Speaker 1: a lot of people questioning, like, why don't you just
- 10:29Speaker 1: say that it's too dangerous to fly back at the moment?
- 10:32Speaker 1: I mean, someone commented, you can't fly home because of
- 10:34Speaker 1: his back, dot, dot, dot, nothing to do with the
- 10:36Speaker 1: war and bombings. Now, it turns out there is a
- 10:40Speaker 1: reason why influencers like Saffron aren't being honest about the
- 10:43Speaker 1: situation in Dubai. And it's becoming more and more apparent
- 10:48Speaker 1: that influencers are being censored with the same level of
- 10:51Speaker 1: heavy restrictions that the traditional media have always dealt with
- 10:55Speaker 1: in the UAE. And I think it's been really tricky
- 10:58Speaker 1: for social media consumers to get their heads around it
- 11:00Speaker 1: because initially the influencers in Dubai were essentially citizen journalists
- 11:05Speaker 1: documenting what was going on for the whole world. And
- 11:08Speaker 1: then suddenly that all stopped. And a lot of influencers
- 11:12Speaker 1: who are based in Dubai have now been posting these
- 11:15Speaker 1: really gushy tributes to the UAE's government and military. So
- 11:19Speaker 1: I don't know if you've seen it, Soph, but a
- 11:21Speaker 1: bunch of influencers have been posting these slow motion clips
- 11:24Speaker 1: of shakes accompanied with texts that says something along the
- 11:26Speaker 1: lines of, they're not scared because we know who protects us.
- 11:30Speaker 1: It is clear that the UAE's government is really trying
- 11:33Speaker 1: to control the narrative there. Unfortunately, though, for the UAE,
- 11:37Speaker 1: Dubai's reputation as this safe haven and this holiday hotspot
- 11:41Speaker 1: has been majorly damaged in the last month, which is
- 11:44Speaker 1: a massive problem for a country that relies so heavily
- 11:47Speaker 1: on tourism, real estate, and also aviation. I mean, it
- 11:50Speaker 1: makes a lot of sense that the government is trying
- 11:53Speaker 1: to paint a more flattering narrative of what's going on
- 11:55Speaker 1: to protect Dubai's image. I mean, that's the whole reason
- 11:58Speaker 1: they got the influences there in the first place. So
- 12:01Speaker 1: it makes sense to utilize them to push their messaging out.
- 12:03Speaker 1: But it feels very deceptive. I mean, I wouldn't be
- 12:05Speaker 1: booking a holiday to Dubai. I wouldn't feel safe there
- 12:07Speaker 1: at all. Now, in terms of the UAE's new social
- 12:10Speaker 1: media rules, authorities announced that people who shared misinformation or
- 12:15Speaker 1: information that results in inciting panic among people could be prosecuted. Now,
- 12:20Speaker 1: the only thing that is allowed to be posted is
- 12:23Speaker 1: verified information. So That means that the country's government essentially
- 12:27Speaker 1: gets to decide what is true and what is false.
- 12:30Speaker 1: So again, you can see why a lot of influencers
- 12:33Speaker 1: would be scared to be acting as citizen journalists and
- 12:36Speaker 1: they just stop posting entirely about what's going on, which
- 12:39Speaker 1: I think is dangerous. Yeah, well, they're clearly not allowed to.
- 12:43Speaker 1: I mean, an example of this is on Saturday, someone
- 12:45Speaker 1: filmed a video of what clearly was an Iranian drone
- 12:49Speaker 1: crashing into a building at Dubai airport and However, no
- 12:52Speaker 1: one was allowed to publicly comment on the incident because
- 12:56Speaker 1: authorities claimed it was debris from an interception. I do
- 12:59Speaker 1: want to point out that no influencers have admitted to
- 13:02Speaker 1: being paid to spread patriotic messages. So, I mean, I
- 13:07Speaker 1: don't necessarily, I didn't necessarily jump to the conclusion that
- 13:09Speaker 1: they were being paid. I just thought maybe they felt
- 13:12Speaker 1: like they needed to in order to stay there. I mean,
- 13:15Speaker 1: it's a scary time and you'd want to be abiding
- 13:18Speaker 1: by the rules, wouldn't you? It is also important to
- 13:20Speaker 1: point out that the UAE is not the only Gulf
- 13:23Speaker 1: state clamping down on residents who post online. So in Qatar,
- 13:27Speaker 1: police have detained over 300 people for filming and circulating videos,
- 13:30Speaker 1: spreading rumors and publishing misleading information related to the war.
- 13:35Speaker 1: As for Kuwait's government, it has completely banned the publication
- 13:38Speaker 1: of anything relating to the fighting. Wow. It is just
- 13:41Speaker 1: mind blowing to see the censorship that is taking place
- 13:44Speaker 1: at the moment and really scary. Now, in terms of
- 13:46Speaker 1: Saffron's travel plans, surely she's going to have to return
- 13:49Speaker 1: home to the UK. I mean, you wouldn't feel safe
- 13:53Speaker 1: in Dubai at the moment. I mean, Dubai currently isn't closed,
- 13:56Speaker 1: but travel is extremely unstable there at the moment. I
- 13:59Speaker 1: also can't imagine Saffron's parents letting her return to Dubai.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Her parents are currently on a paid trip to Thailand,
- 14:05Speaker 1: but I can imagine behind the scenes they'd be like,
- 14:07Speaker 1: you are coming straight home to Brighton. Well, I mean,
- 14:09Speaker 1: you got the vibe she kind of wanted to go
- 14:11Speaker 1: home anyway, so it's almost a bit of an excuse. Yeah.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Sweat has been my life for over a decade and
- 14:17Speaker 2: taking full ownership is both, yes, exciting, but a responsibility
- 14:22Speaker 2: that I take so seriously.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Kayla Adsenas is finally in complete control of her fitness empire, Sweat.
- 14:30Speaker 1: This week, the personal trainer brought out her ex-fiance, Toby
- 14:33Speaker 1: Pierce's stake in the business to become the sole owner.
- 14:36Speaker 1: It is really interesting to reflect on what has been
- 14:39Speaker 1: a pretty tumultuous ride. for Kayla Idsina. So she founded
- 14:43Speaker 1: Sweat in 2015 with Toby Pierce, who was her then boyfriend.
- 14:47Speaker 1: By 2020, the couple turned Sweat into the world's most
- 14:50Speaker 1: downloaded fitness app with an estimated annual revenue of $ 100 million.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Then there was a bit of a hiccup when Kayla
- 14:59Speaker 1: and Toby called off their engagement, but that wasn't enough
- 15:02Speaker 1: to put an end to their business relationships. So they
- 15:04Speaker 1: battled through what would have probably been quite an awkward
- 15:07Speaker 1: time But in 2021, they got an offer from a
- 15:09Speaker 1: US company called iFit Health and Fitness that was too
- 15:12Speaker 1: good to turn down. Yeah. So originally the deal was
- 15:15Speaker 1: reported to be worth $ 400 million, but it turns out
- 15:18Speaker 1: it was about half that. Now, despite iFit owning Sweat,
- 15:22Speaker 1: Kayla remained the face of the business. So a lot
- 15:25Speaker 1: of her community didn't actually realize that it had been sold. However,
- 15:29Speaker 1: two years later, Kayla and Toby joined forces to buy
- 15:33Speaker 1: Sweat back from iFit. Now, This made headlines because it
- 15:36Speaker 1: is very rare in business for founders to reacquire their
- 15:39Speaker 1: company after selling it. And Kayla ended up taking a
- 15:43Speaker 1: more operational role alongside a new CEO while Toby was
- 15:47Speaker 1: a passive investor. And this ended up being a really
- 15:50Speaker 1: smart decision, both financially and emotionally, because at the time
- 15:54Speaker 1: Kayla said, sweat is like my child. It feels like
- 15:57Speaker 1: I have my child back. There's this community, this family
- 16:00Speaker 1: attached to it, and it's hard to let go of.
- 16:02Speaker 1: From a financial perspective, Kayla and Toby actually ended up
- 16:06Speaker 1: purchasing their business back for significantly less than what they
- 16:10Speaker 1: sold it for. So it was iFit who ended up
- 16:12Speaker 1: being impacted by the COVID fitness boom drop off. So
- 16:16Speaker 1: financial statements filed by iFit to ASIC in December 2023
- 16:21Speaker 1: revealed sweat subscription revenue dropped by 14% and the business
- 16:25Speaker 1: recorded after-tax losses of $ 10. 7 million between May 2022 and
- 16:28Speaker 1: May 2023. Yeah, so essentially Kayla and Toby. profited off
- 16:35Speaker 1: the COVID fitness boom, sold the business for this incredible
- 16:39Speaker 1: amount of money, and then go, actually, we'll have it
- 16:41Speaker 1: back for a lot cheaper and continue to run it.
- 16:44Speaker 1: What an absolute win. Now, Kayla announced the exciting news
- 16:47Speaker 1: that she is the sole owner of Sweat. In an
- 16:50Speaker 1: Instagram reel that has been viewed 2.5 million times, she
- 16:54Speaker 1: revealed that she bought Toby Pierce out. Let's take a
- 16:57Speaker 1: listen to some of what she said.
- 16:59Speaker 2: I am so proud to say that Sweat is one
- 17:02Speaker 2: of the few large global fitness platforms that is fully
- 17:06Speaker 2: female-owned and female-led. This matters because the product has always
- 17:12Speaker 2: been built for women and now it's solely led by
- 17:16Speaker 2: a woman.
- 17:17Speaker 1: You can tell how much this means to Kayla because
- 17:19Speaker 1: she actually got quite teary at the start of her video.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Her mum also gave an indication of what this means
- 17:25Speaker 1: to the family. She wrote, Dad and I couldn't be
- 17:28Speaker 1: more proud of you if we tried. This has been
- 17:30Speaker 1: a long time coming and so well deserved. What an
- 17:32Speaker 1: amazing journey it's been to arrive to today. I told
- 17:35Speaker 1: Yaya and Papu yesterday, bravo from Yaya and a little
- 17:38Speaker 1: twinkle in Papu's eyes. Congratulations, darling girl. I know that
- 17:42Speaker 1: Kayla and Toby started this business together, but Kayla has
- 17:46Speaker 1: really been the heart and soul of this app. So
- 17:48Speaker 1: it must be an incredible feeling to be able to
- 17:51Speaker 1: become the sole owner of And sound on your own
- 17:54Speaker 1: two feet away from your ex as well. Well, I'm
- 17:57Speaker 1: sure he's also celebrating because let's be honest, Toby being
- 18:00Speaker 1: involved in sweat was a clear conflict of interest for him.
- 18:02Speaker 1: His wife, Rachel Dillon, is a very successful fitness influencer
- 18:06Speaker 1: in her own right. She runs a fitness app called
- 18:08Speaker 1: Move With Us, which is in direct competition with Sweat.
- 18:12Speaker 1: So it was very awkward that he was an owner
- 18:15Speaker 1: of Sweat. It hasn't actually been disclosed how much Kayla
- 18:17Speaker 1: paid Toby for his stake in Sweat. It would be
- 18:20Speaker 1: very interesting to know. I wonder if it will eventually
- 18:22Speaker 1: come out in an article in the financial review. I'm
- 18:24Speaker 1: sure that that information will be disclosed at some point. Well,
- 18:28Speaker 1: isn't the AFR rich list coming out soon? We'll be
- 18:30Speaker 1: able to sort of work out if Toby's got this
- 18:32Speaker 1: massive new chunk of money in there. I always love
- 18:34Speaker 1: perusing it, but it's always a bit of a kick
- 18:36Speaker 1: in the dick, isn't it? Seeing how much some of
- 18:38Speaker 1: these people have been paid. I saw that the White
- 18:41Speaker 1: Fox Boutique owners have cracked a billion dollars and they're
- 18:43Speaker 1: going to be very high up on the list. It
- 18:45Speaker 1: always shocks me how much the owner of Canva earns.
- 18:48Speaker 1: She's always like top of that. I mean, it is
- 18:50Speaker 1: a brilliant platform, but I'm like, wow. I can understand
- 18:53Speaker 1: Canva way more than I can understand White Fox Boutique.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Are there really that many teenagers out there who want
- 18:59Speaker 1: jumpers with garish lettering on the back? Sophie, it's fast fashion.
- 19:02Speaker 1: You know what it's like being a teenager wanting, you
- 19:04Speaker 1: have to have a new outfit for everything. Anyway, back
- 19:08Speaker 1: to Kayla. I found this announcement really interesting because it
- 19:12Speaker 1: really aligns with the business focus content that she has
- 19:16Speaker 1: been sharing more recently on her social media channels. I mean,
- 19:19Speaker 1: especially when you compare it to back in the day
- 19:21Speaker 1: when the whole strategy around Kayla's social media was that
- 19:24Speaker 1: you never saw her face. Like it was always about
- 19:26Speaker 1: her body. She barely spoke on there, but she is
- 19:29Speaker 1: really coming into her own on her social media channels.
- 19:32Speaker 1: And late last year, she opened up about her business
- 19:35Speaker 1: endeavors outside of a sweat, which includes owning petrol stations,
- 19:39Speaker 1: medical centers, and commercial real estate. She also said that
- 19:42Speaker 1: she was getting into supplements as well as owning a
- 19:45Speaker 1: dog app called Doggett. I'm really happy that we're seeing
- 19:48Speaker 1: this side of Kayla. She obviously has a lot to
- 19:50Speaker 1: offer when it comes to giving advice in the business world.
- 19:53Speaker 1: And I think that she's a fantastic role model, particularly
- 19:56Speaker 1: for anyone living in Adelaide, that it doesn't matter where
- 20:00Speaker 1: you live, that if you set your sights on something,
- 20:02Speaker 1: you can achieve it. Yeah, it is really inspiring. And
- 20:05Speaker 1: I like that she is really hitting back against this
- 20:08Speaker 1: false narrative that has circled for years that she was
- 20:11Speaker 1: just the face of this operation and Toby Pierce was
- 20:14Speaker 1: the brains. Because in a Forbes interview in 2024, she said,
- 20:18Speaker 1: our roles are equal. I was the face, but I
- 20:20Speaker 1: wasn't the face without a brain. And I mean, it's
- 20:23Speaker 1: just so dismissive to just assume that she had nothing
- 20:26Speaker 1: to do with the business side of things. And she
- 20:28Speaker 1: was just the body behind it all. Like how offensive.
- 20:31Speaker 1: She has done an incredible job at building this business up.
- 20:35Speaker 1: It does seem like Kayla is in this era of
- 20:39Speaker 1: taking the narrative back because on January 3rd, she shared
- 20:43Speaker 1: a reel of her walking hand in hand with her husband, Jay.
- 20:46Speaker 1: And they were both dressed in black with sunglasses. They
- 20:49Speaker 1: looked very powerful. Kayla was smiling and the caption said,
- 20:52Speaker 1: some women don't get to live soft lives. They get
- 20:55Speaker 1: handed chaos, grief, betrayal, and they have to learn how
- 20:57Speaker 1: to bloom anyway. They're not here because it was easy.
- 21:00Speaker 1: They're here because they didn't give up. And in the
- 21:03Speaker 1: background of the clip, the song Survivor played. Then she
- 21:07Speaker 1: added in the caption, to all my ladies, life gets better.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Trust me. Believe in yourself. Trust your instincts. You got this.
- 21:13Speaker 1: I would love to know who or what she's referring
- 21:16Speaker 1: to when she speaks about betrayal. Is that betrayal in
- 21:20Speaker 1: a business sense or- A romantic sense. Well, my initial
- 21:24Speaker 1: reaction was, oh, is this a very delayed pot shot
- 21:27Speaker 1: at Toby Pierce? And then when she announced that she
- 21:29Speaker 1: was the sole owner of Sweat, I was like, ooh,
- 21:33Speaker 1: are we about to find out more? I don't think
- 21:36Speaker 1: so because they still have a child together. Maybe this
- 21:40Speaker 1: is some sort of friendship bust up. That's when I
- 21:43Speaker 1: feel like they're pretty prevalent in your 30s when people
- 21:45Speaker 1: go their separate ways and they're in different life stages.
- 21:48Speaker 1: I definitely don't think she's taking a pot shot at
- 21:51Speaker 1: Toby at all. I mean, she's moved her life to
- 21:54Speaker 1: the Gold Coast so that they can raise their daughter
- 21:56Speaker 1: together there. I mean, clearly they were amicable enough to
- 21:59Speaker 1: run a business together, but I just felt the timing
- 22:01Speaker 1: of it was interesting how, you know, not long after
- 22:04Speaker 1: it was announced that they finally cut ties permanently from
- 22:08Speaker 1: The business, also the fact that Jay was in the clip,
- 22:10Speaker 1: like it was sort of like he was backing her.
- 22:12Speaker 1: I mean, she's definitely keeping people guessing with that one.
- 22:14Speaker 1: It was a pretty powerful statement. Yeah, well, at the time,
- 22:18Speaker 1: Jules Neal commented, she wrote, you said it girl, to
- 22:21Speaker 1: which Kayla responded, thinking of you. Now, a couple of
- 22:24Speaker 1: weeks later, Kayla revealed again that she had pushed herself
- 22:27Speaker 1: outside of her comfort zone and was publicly speaking at
- 22:30Speaker 1: America's biggest retail event. So in the caption, she revealed
- 22:34Speaker 1: that she's been taking advice from Gary Vee, to share
- 22:37Speaker 1: more business-minded content. Again, Amy would have loved that we
- 22:40Speaker 1: were talking about Gary V. There was a time in
- 22:42Speaker 1: 2020 where she was obsessed with Gary V. At our house,
- 22:46Speaker 1: we had a spare bedroom that she set up and
- 22:48Speaker 1: she called it the flip room where she would buy
- 22:50Speaker 1: things off eBay and try and flip them for more money.
- 22:53Speaker 1: I was going to say I felt like I'd been
- 22:55Speaker 1: transported back to 2020 with the mention of Gary V.
- 22:58Speaker 1: I think it was our second year into the podcast
- 23:00Speaker 1: and we had Sam Magnan on doing a bit of
- 23:03Speaker 1: an interview with him. And he is obviously a respected businessman.
- 23:07Speaker 1: He's a bit of a PR mogul. And Amy mentioned
- 23:09Speaker 1: something about Gary Vee. And he's like, I fucking hate
- 23:12Speaker 1: that guy. And you could see she was like, oh, no, no,
- 23:16Speaker 1: I really respect Sam. And he thinks Gary Vee's a
- 23:19Speaker 1: bit of an idiot. Yeah, I do remember that moment
- 23:22Speaker 1: being like, Amy, don't say anything. Shut up. Now, this
- 23:25Speaker 1: big news from Kayla does follow reports that she and
- 23:28Speaker 1: her husband, Jay, have reportedly purchased a home in for
- 23:32Speaker 1: $ 13 million in mermaid waters on the Gold Coast. Now
- 23:36Speaker 1: this house sounds absolutely epic. It's five bedrooms with a
- 23:39Speaker 1: tennis court, infinity pool, pontoon, and also a boat shed.
- 23:44Speaker 1: I mean, do we expect anything less, really? I mean,
- 23:46Speaker 1: when I saw $ 13 million, I was like, oh, only
- 23:48Speaker 1: $ 13 million? Like she's worth so much money. Well, it's
- 23:51Speaker 1: almost double the price of the house that she had
- 23:53Speaker 1: in Adelaide. So she moved from Adelaide to Queensland in
- 23:56Speaker 1: 2024 after selling a beautiful bungalow that she owned in
- 24:00Speaker 1: Adelaide's inner southern suburbs. which was $ 7. 3 million. So this
- 24:04Speaker 1: one is a bit of a step up. It's a
- 24:06Speaker 1: step up, but it's also in a different state and
- 24:07Speaker 1: it's two years later. That's inflation for you, isn't it?
- 24:10Speaker 1: An anonymous Reddit user has claimed the boyfriend of a
- 24:13Speaker 1: well-known influencer got her pregnant. Now, the woman who is
- 24:17Speaker 1: several months along in her pregnancy says the influencer in
- 24:21Speaker 1: question has no idea. In the lengthy post, the woman
- 24:26Speaker 1: asked for advice explaining she got pregnant right before her
- 24:29Speaker 1: baby daddy met the influencer. She wrote, She continued writing,
- 24:52Speaker 1: especially being this far into the pregnancy. Now, she said
- 24:56Speaker 1: that she was casually seeing the man before she fell pregnant.
- 24:58Speaker 1: But what I want to know is, does this man
- 25:01Speaker 1: know that she's pregnant? Yes, he does know that she's pregnant.
- 25:04Speaker 1: So the Reddit user said that their boyfriend knows about
- 25:07Speaker 1: this pregnancy, but has expressed reservations about telling the girlfriend.
- 25:12Speaker 1: So she wrote, he knows I'm pregnant. It was before
- 25:14Speaker 1: they got together. I found out early. let him know.
- 25:17Speaker 1: And he said he'd help financially and in person. She
- 25:21Speaker 1: also continued saying that the influencer's boyfriend has asked for
- 25:24Speaker 1: photos of scans and they've had a conversation about custody
- 25:28Speaker 1: and where the child will eventually live with them both
- 25:31Speaker 1: agreeing that the baby will be with the mother most
- 25:34Speaker 1: of the time. So yes, he is definitely aware of
- 25:37Speaker 1: this pregnancy. I mean, she cleared up the fact that
- 25:39Speaker 1: there was no cheating involved and that she was with
- 25:43Speaker 1: the influencer's boyfriend and before he got with the new girlfriend.
- 25:47Speaker 1: It sounds kind of like a bit of damage control
- 25:50Speaker 1: on this woman's behalf. My guess is that potentially someone
- 25:54Speaker 1: has found out and is going to go public with it,
- 25:58Speaker 1: whether that's on TikTok and it was going to spread
- 26:00Speaker 1: like wildfire and she wants to put it out there
- 26:03Speaker 1: before any of that happens. Hey, this is actually the story.
- 26:07Speaker 1: We were together prior to to him getting with this
- 26:10Speaker 1: influencer well that actually does make a lot of sense
- 26:12Speaker 1: now that you say that kate because in the post
- 26:14Speaker 1: she explained that she is already a mum and she's
- 26:16Speaker 1: worried about protecting her family and her family's privacy saying
- 26:20Speaker 1: that her biggest fear is that if the influencer girlfriend
- 26:24Speaker 1: finds out she might talk about it publicly on tiktok
- 26:27Speaker 1: which would expose her so it's weird to say expose
- 26:31Speaker 1: her because if you haven't done any wrongdoing how are
- 26:34Speaker 1: you being exposed I mean, I understand that she probably
- 26:36Speaker 1: doesn't want her face out there. She said, I absolutely
- 26:39Speaker 1: cannot have my identity out there. So it's very interesting.
- 26:43Speaker 1: She finished the post by asking if anyone has dealt
- 26:46Speaker 1: with something similar or has advice on how to protect
- 26:49Speaker 1: yourself in a situation like this. Now, as you can imagine,
- 26:53Speaker 1: the overwhelming response in the comment section was that she
- 26:57Speaker 1: should tell the influencer in question. One user wrote, honestly,
- 27:01Speaker 1: this is something he should be handling, not you. If
- 27:04Speaker 1: he hasn't told his partner, that's on him. Your focus
- 27:07Speaker 1: should be on your health and your baby. Another user
- 27:10Speaker 1: said it might also be worth getting some legal advice
- 27:13Speaker 1: about your privacy rights in case anything is ever shared online.
- 27:17Speaker 1: My personal advice to this woman would be do not
- 27:20Speaker 1: reach out to the influencer personally. You need to put
- 27:23Speaker 1: pressure on the baby daddy to tell his partner because
- 27:27Speaker 1: if you go behind their back and create this drama
- 27:30Speaker 1: and the influencer is going to be on the back foot.
- 27:33Speaker 1: And when someone comes to you with information that you
- 27:35Speaker 1: don't want to hear, often you turn the messenger into
- 27:39Speaker 1: the villain. So the boyfriend's going to be like, oh no, no,
- 27:42Speaker 1: this isn't true, blah, blah, blah. And then that's when
- 27:44Speaker 1: you're going to be called out online over this. And
- 27:47Speaker 1: that's when you're going to, your identity is going to
- 27:49Speaker 1: be dragged into this. I want to point out that
- 27:52Speaker 1: this is an anonymous post. So there's actually no proof
- 27:54Speaker 1: yet being provided that this is a legitimate situation. I mean,
- 27:57Speaker 1: When I first saw this story pop up on Influencer
- 28:01Speaker 1: Updates AU, I was skeptical thinking, well, maybe someone is
- 28:04Speaker 1: just making this up for, you know, engagement or cloud
- 28:08Speaker 1: or whatever. But then when I read the full post,
- 28:11Speaker 1: I was like, there's almost too much detail for this
- 28:13Speaker 1: not to be true. Like it's a really interesting move
- 28:16Speaker 1: to go public with information in this way. I suppose
- 28:19Speaker 1: that she did keep the details very loose. I mean,
- 28:21Speaker 1: I can't even think which influencer it might be. Well,
- 28:24Speaker 1: I think back in the day, maybe in like 2017, 2018,
- 28:27Speaker 1: this could have been a bit defamatory because there weren't
- 28:31Speaker 1: that many influencers out there. But because the influencer space,
- 28:35Speaker 1: even in Australia is completely saturated, like this could be
- 28:38Speaker 1: someone that is on our radar or someone that we
- 28:41Speaker 1: have no clue of that's a TikTok creator in this
- 28:44Speaker 1: specific niche. Like the term influencer is so loosely used.
- 28:48Speaker 1: That's why, I mean, I initially when you brought this
- 28:50Speaker 1: story forward was a bit like, oh, I don't know,
- 28:52Speaker 1: I don't want to get in trouble for defamation, but
- 28:54Speaker 1: let's be honest, this applies to so many different people
- 28:58Speaker 1: that it is very unclear who it is. Yeah, I mean,
- 29:01Speaker 1: I don't want to speculate in this segment who it
- 29:03Speaker 1: could be because, as you said, it is highly defamatory,
- 29:06Speaker 1: but it will be interesting in a couple of months
- 29:08Speaker 1: if we do see a couple break up or the
- 29:11Speaker 1: influencer in question goes rogue on her Instagram or TikTok
- 29:15Speaker 1: and blasts the boyfriend. I mean, that's when we'll know
- 29:18Speaker 1: whether this Reddit post is real or not. Yeah, well,
- 29:20Speaker 1: really the only identifiable aspect we have at the moment
- 29:24Speaker 1: is the timeline of this pregnancy. So the woman said
- 29:27Speaker 1: she's a couple of months pregnant. So it's an influencer
- 29:31Speaker 1: who has gotten together with a boyfriend fairly recently. But again,
- 29:35Speaker 1: so many of them have. Yeah. This story was actually
- 29:38Speaker 1: picked up by the Daily Mail. and also as I
- 29:40Speaker 1: touched on influencer updates are you I wonder whether the
- 29:44Speaker 1: reddit user thought that her post would get this level
- 29:47Speaker 1: of attention or whether it would go unnoticed I mean
- 29:50Speaker 1: this post is definitely putting pressure on the influencer's boyfriend
- 29:53Speaker 1: to fess up I mean I don't think that's why
- 29:55Speaker 1: she shared it if this is a legitimate story I
- 29:58Speaker 1: think that this result is the opposite of what she wanted.
- 30:02Speaker 1: I think she really just wanted some people's advice because
- 30:04Speaker 1: it would be a rather awkward story to share with
- 30:07Speaker 1: people you know, particularly if this is a well-known influencer,
- 30:10Speaker 1: because you can't trust anyone out there. Someone tells someone
- 30:12Speaker 1: and then it ends up on TikTok. Like these days,
- 30:15Speaker 1: it is so easy to make a story go viral
- 30:18Speaker 1: like this on TikTok. I wonder if there's a couple
- 30:21Speaker 1: of influencers who have recently got in new relationships who
- 30:25Speaker 1: are sort of questioning things going through their Partner's phone's
- 30:28Speaker 1: being a bit like, oh, is it you? Well, that
- 30:31Speaker 1: is where we're going to leave things today. I have
- 30:33Speaker 1: a favor to ask before we go. If you enjoy
- 30:35Speaker 1: listening to our new podcast, The Mums Group, can you
- 30:38Speaker 1: please make sure you pause this podcast right now and
- 30:42Speaker 1: go subscribe to it on Apple Podcast or Spotify? Because
- 30:45Speaker 1: we have been doing feed drops into the Outspoken feed.
- 30:48Speaker 1: So we've been basically spoon feeding you guys. It's really
- 30:51Speaker 1: easy to listen to the podcast and we can see
- 30:53Speaker 1: the numbers. You guys are listening and enjoying it. But
- 30:57Speaker 1: then we need you to go across to that feed
- 30:59Speaker 1: because we can't always share the episodes in the Outspoken feed.
- 31:02Speaker 1: They need to have their separate identity. So if you
- 31:05Speaker 1: could do that for us, we would really appreciate it.
- 31:07Speaker 1: I'm usually pretty bad at these things, but it's actually
- 31:09Speaker 1: really not that difficult to do. You just got to
- 31:11Speaker 1: click the little follow button and it actually makes your
- 31:15Speaker 1: life easier in the long run because it's just there
- 31:17Speaker 1: ready to listen to. If Sophie can do it, you
- 31:21Speaker 1: guys can do it. That's your motivation. If you do
- 31:24Speaker 1: also want to hear more from us, we drop a
- 31:26Speaker 1: bonus episode every Thursday for Outspoken Plus subscribers. So this Thursday,
- 31:30Speaker 1: we discussed how Laura Henshaw has listed her $ 9 million mansion,
- 31:33Speaker 1: but she doesn't want you to know about it. We
- 31:36Speaker 1: also spoke about how Laura Byrne and Maddie J have
- 31:38Speaker 1: put their beautiful beach house up for rental. You can
- 31:41Speaker 1: actually go and stay in it yourself, but all the
- 31:43Speaker 1: commentary has been around the cost. So we dissect all
- 31:47Speaker 1: of that. If you aren't an Outspoken Plus subscriber and
- 31:50Speaker 1: All the details to sign up are in the show notes.
- 31:51Speaker 1: It's only $ 5. 99. I'm sad I wasn't part of that discussion,
- 31:54Speaker 1: so I am going to tune in for that one because,
- 31:56Speaker 1: I mean, personally, if I went to stay at their house,
- 31:59Speaker 1: this is really bad. Maybe me being a journo, I'd
- 32:01Speaker 1: love to trawl through everything. I mean, sure, they have
- 32:03Speaker 1: rooms locked and that sort of thing. When you go
- 32:05Speaker 1: to an Airbnb and you're like, what's this? It's where
- 32:07Speaker 1: all their personal things are. But are there going to
- 32:09Speaker 1: be journos who just book this or journos from the
- 32:12Speaker 1: Daily Mail who book this place just to see if
- 32:14Speaker 1: they can get anything? you know, gossips. I mean, we
- 32:16Speaker 1: clearly are identical sisters because that's exactly what we discussed
- 32:19Speaker 1: on the podcast. I said I'd be going through the
- 32:21Speaker 1: bathroom every inch of it looking in the cupboards, but
- 32:24Speaker 1: clearly they'd have to lock a lot of things away. Yes. Well,
- 32:27Speaker 1: on that note, no one will ever ask us to
- 32:31Speaker 1: house sit for them. But this episode was recorded on
- 32:33Speaker 1: the traditional land of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains.
- 32:36Speaker 1: We pay respect to elders past and present.
