- 0:00i have a short episode for you today.
- 0:02maybe just a few pennies for my thoughts,
- 0:04if you will. it was the end of an era
- 0:37here in the united states recently.
- 0:39the end of the penny era, that is.
- 0:43the last penny was recently minted at the philadelphia mint.
- 0:47if you are not in the states, this may not seem like a big deal
- 0:50to you because i know you haven't had 1¢ coins in decades.
- 0:55or a lot of countries haven't had 1¢ coins in decades.
- 0:59but for some reason, here in the states,
- 1:02we have been hanging on to them. i actually remember when i was
- 1:06traveling in australia and new zealand,
- 1:09oh my, over a decade ago, and there were no pennies.
- 1:14even then, i wondered, why do we still have pennies in the us?
- 1:18transactions were always rounded to the nearest 5¢ if you paid in
- 1:22cash. and honestly, it was so much simpler.
- 1:26not having to carry all of those 1¢ coins around.
- 1:29though, those countries do also have 1 and $2 coins instead,
- 1:34which were hefty, but i also loved them.
- 1:37so i guess there is that trade off.
- 1:41anyway, i talk about picking up a penny in the parking lot all the
- 1:45time, and i'm always telling you to budget down to the penny.
- 1:49so how does this lack of physical pennies affect how we budget
- 1:53today? drum roll. honestly, it has absolutely no
- 1:59relevance. and here's why. it is still incredibly
- 2:04important to budget down to the penny,
- 2:07but it is so easy to do so when you are using my favorite
- 2:11budgeting tool, ynab. think about it this way.
- 2:16one of the biggest obstacles i see my clients face is this thing
- 2:20called mental accounting. right? that is where you're looking at
- 2:25your checking account balance and thinking,
- 2:27oh, i have plenty of money to buy that shirt right now.
- 2:31but then a day or two later, whoops,
- 2:35you realize you forgot about a bill and now you're officially
- 2:40stressed out out because you've already spent that money.
- 2:44this is where the power of tracking to the penny comes in.
- 2:49whether or not that penny is sitting in your wallet.
- 2:52this is really all about intentionality and awareness so
- 2:57that you can get the clarity you are looking for.
- 3:00if we are looking at this in terms of ynab,
- 3:03tracking to the penny is really just following ynab's first rule.
- 3:08give every dollar a job. we assign every single dollar,
- 3:13yes, and every single cent, a purpose,
- 3:17which helps us see exactly where our money is going and make
- 3:21intentional choices. i will go ahead and link to a blog post of
- 3:25mine that talks about all four of ynab's original rules.
- 3:30they have since shifted to questions to ask yourself,
- 3:34which feels a little cozier than rules.
- 3:37right? anyway, so if you track a purchase
- 3:42that's $14.99, for example, you are being
- 3:47specific. you are being intentional.
- 3:51you are looking at the exact number you need to assign to your
- 3:56clothing category or your entertainment category.
- 4:00by being accurate, you are eliminating that financial stress
- 4:05and gaining financial clarity. and
- 4:10honestly, the amount of purchases i make in cash these days is so
- 4:15close to zero and that is simply because it's so much easier to
- 4:19track in ynab when the transaction gets imported
- 4:23directly from a card. but, you know,
- 4:26because i'm one of those budget nerds that wants to know where
- 4:30every single last penny is spent, it makes it easy.
- 4:34the software handles all of those pennies for you.
- 4:37so you don't even have to worry about rounding errors or carrying
- 4:41physical change. you just approve the transaction and it's done.
- 4:46right down to the last cent. so does this mean i will
- 4:51not be picking up a penny if i see it in the parking lot?
- 4:56heck no. absolutely not. it might be even more relevant
- 5:01to pick up that penny now. i hear they might be good collector's
- 5:05items now. look at it this way. every single cent
- 5:10is a reminder that we are being intentional.
- 5:14we are choosing where to spend or save our money.
- 5:18it's a reminder that that penny is helping you make progress
- 5:22towards your biggest wildest dreams because,
- 5:28remember, those dreams are what money should be a tool for rather
- 5:33than an obstacle. so go forth and budget to the
- 5:38penny, my friends. and if you want a step by step guide to
- 5:42setting up and mastering your own ynab,
- 5:44check out my course, ynab made easy.
- 5:47you'll find that link in the show notes.
- 5:49until next time, keep creating that positive relationship with
- 5:53your money. because remember, your biggest wildest dreams
- 5:59are within reach. let's go make some money moves so that you too
- 6:03can start to experience financial freedom.
