- 0:20Hi everybody and welcome back to the Elon Musk podcast.
- 0:24Now Twitter, the renowned social media platform once considered
- 0:27the heartbeat of the digital world.
- 0:29Has experienced a steep downfall in value.
- 0:32Purchased by Elon Musk, the techno entrepreneur and CEO,
- 0:35SpaceX and Tesla, the platform's value has plummeted to 1/3 of
- 0:40the acquisition price, as revealed by Fidelity's recent
- 0:44markdown of its equity stake in Twitter.
- 0:47Now Elon Musk, who once saw Twitter as an opportunity to
- 0:50push the boundaries of social media, has confessed that the
- 0:53acquisition was not as fruitful as he had envisioned.
- 0:57Now purchased for an astronomical $44 billion,
- 1:00including $33.5 billion in equity, Twitter's value has
- 1:05halved, according to Musk. The exact methodology by which
- 1:08Fidelity determine the markdown remains undisclosed, leaving
- 1:12unanswered questions about whether they had access to any
- 1:15non public information from Twitter now.
- 1:18The first signs of decline emerged in November when
- 1:21Fidelity reduced the value of its Twitter stake to 44%.
- 1:26Of the original purchase price, and this initiated a series of
- 1:29further markdowns in December and February, marking A troubled
- 1:33fiscal trajectory for the platform.
- 1:35And since Musk took control, Twitter's financial health has
- 1:38been precarious, saddled with $13 billion of debt.
- 1:42The company faced A downturn marked by erratic decision
- 1:45making, challenges and content moderation, and consequential
- 1:4950% decline in advertising revenue, as revealed by Musk in
- 1:53March. In an attempt to supplement this
- 1:55loss with the sales from Twitter, Blue subscriptions fell
- 1:58flat as less than 1% of Twitter's monthly users opted
- 2:02for the service by the end of March.
- 2:04And while Twitter remains silent, failing to respond to
- 2:07requests for comment, Musk's investment in the platform has
- 2:10dwindled to $8.8 billion. The financial downturn is not
- 2:16gone unnoticed, with the Bloomberg Billionaires Index
- 2:19using Fidelity's valuation. Indicating a dip in Musk's $187
- 2:23billion fortune by about 850 million.
- 2:25Now, Despite these financial tribulations, Musk's wealth has
- 2:30grown by more than $48 billion this year, primarily attributed
- 2:35to a 63% surge in Tesla's share price.
- 2:39Now, the initial optimism that surrounded Musk's acquisition of
- 2:43Twitter in late October was shortlived, and the platform
- 2:47experienced a surge in users with app downloads.
- 2:50Growing by nearly 10% in November now, however, daily
- 2:54active users barely budged, showing an increase of less than
- 2:571% from the previous month. And despite this, must proclaim
- 3:01the platform's usage to be at an all time high, with the actual
- 3:04figure only 0.8% higher than Twitter's previous daily user
- 3:09high in June of 2022, Musk has made major alterations to
- 3:14Twitter's operations and functionality.
- 3:16While forecasting the app to reach 1 billion monthly users by
- 3:192024, however, the grandeur of his prediction contrasts sharply
- 3:24with the reality and is Per data analysis from Apptopia Data a I
- 3:29and Sensor Tower, user engagement on Twitter has shown
- 3:33signs of decline. The once promising spikes in app
- 3:36downloads are now flattening and following Musk's takeover, the
- 3:40average time spent on the app has remained stagnant at 19.1
- 3:44minutes per day. The same as in April of 2022,
- 3:48according to Apptopia. And they say there was a pretty
- 3:51nice increase in usage right after he took over.
- 3:54But now it's flat to down, observes Tom Grant, head of
- 3:58research for Apptopia. And the platform saw brief
- 4:01periods of increased engagement, particularly around the collapse
- 4:04of Silicon Valley Bank, an event that caused the surge among
- 4:07Twitter's power users. However, these instances were
- 4:10not sufficient to reverse the overall trend, now
- 4:14comparatively. Other social media apps like
- 4:16TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook record significantly higher
- 4:20daily usage times. Users spend an average of 87
- 4:24minutes per day on TikTok, 43 minutes on Instagram, and 39
- 4:29minutes on Facebook, dwarfing Twitter's average of 26 minutes
- 4:33per day, as found by Sensor Tower.
- 4:36Now, Twitter barely edged out Snapchat.
- 4:38Which sees 25 minutes of daily usage in the US and this stark
- 4:42contrast outlines the gravity of Twitter's challenges and
- 4:45maintaining user engagement. Notably, both younger and older
- 4:49users divided between millennials and Gen.
- 4:52X and older initially increased their time spent on Twitter,
- 4:55according to data around the time of Musk's takeover.
- 5:00However, this momentum soon dissipated with both
- 5:03demographics now spending less time on the platform, according
- 5:06to Amtopia's analysis. The more worrying sign lies in
- 5:09the waning engagement of Twitter's power users.
- 5:12In March, events such as the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank
- 5:15led to a peak in platform engagement, with power users
- 5:19logging in for a 138.7 minutes a day, and by April the figure
- 5:24fell to 138 minutes, slightly less than the same period a year
- 5:28ago globally, Twitter's user rank.
- 5:32Among all apps has stagnated at 7th place since January of 2022,
- 5:36according to data dot A I. And App downloads, what's a
- 5:40promising metric, also showed sign of stagnation.
- 5:43In April, downloads fell to 16.2 million, down from 17.5 million
- 5:48in April of 2022. Slight fluctuations have
- 5:52occurred. For instance, in March Twitter
- 5:54dipped to the 8th place for global download ranks, only to
- 5:57recover in April and despite these statistics.
- 6:01There is a glimmer of hope. The introduction of in app
- 6:04purchases under Musk stewardship has shown promising growth.
- 6:08In April and May of 2022, in app revenue for Twitter totaled just
- 6:12over $120,000 combined. Fast forward to the same period
- 6:16in 2023, the revenue surged to just over $3,000,000 and most of
- 6:23this revenue was driven by users purchasing Twitter Blue
- 6:26subscriptions, which offers users.
- 6:29Verified status for $11.00 per month for iOS and $8 per month
- 6:34for everyone else. Even though this growth in app
- 6:37revenue shows potential, the bigger picture remains
- 6:40unsettled. Since Musk's takeover, there
- 6:44have been 88.1 million downloads of the app, slightly less than
- 6:49the same period a year ago when 88.6 million people downloaded
- 6:53the app. Now this data paints A
- 6:55challenging picture for Twitter under Musk's management.
- 6:58From once being a thriving social media platform, Twitter
- 7:01now grapples with declining user engagement, flattened app
- 7:04downloads and revenue that, despite some signs of life, is
- 7:08far from robust. In the spotlights.
- 7:10Now on Elon Musk, and he has to demonstrate his knack for
- 7:14innovation and revitalization to turn around the fortunes of this
- 7:18once vibrant platform. His task is huge, and we'll see
