- 0:00Before I came to work at Northwest, I
- 0:03was the youth pastor at a church out in
- 0:04California. Uh, and I think that it was
- 0:07like my second or third year that I was
- 0:10the youth pastor there that the
- 0:11associate pastor of our church came to
- 0:13me and he asked me to preach a sermon
- 0:15during the main Sunday service. Okay?
- 0:18And so, as I was preparing for that
- 0:19message, right, I was like probably 24
- 0:22maybe. And I don't remember how this
- 0:24came up, but I ended up getting into an
- 0:26argument with some of my friends about
- 0:28who would win in a fight, me or a
- 0:32giraffe.
- 0:33And and y'all, I was like straight up.
- 0:36This is on the internet. Like, you can
- 0:37still find this. There you go. It's
- 0:39actually the first sermon I sent to
- 0:40Pastor Jay when I applied for the job.
- 0:42And that was the first thing he
- 0:43mentioned when uh when I interviewed.
- 0:45Anyway, so I was like straight up
- 0:47convinced. Okay. I was straight up
- 0:48convinced that I could win a fight with
- 0:50a giraffe, right? I was like, you just
- 0:51got to juke out those big old long, you
- 0:53know, chicken legs, right? And then jump
- 0:55onto its back, hold onto the neck, and
- 0:57then you just like ride until it gets
- 0:59tired, and then you got it, right? Like,
- 1:01you totally got it. Okay.
- 1:05And yes, dude, they're like they're like
- 1:07pencils, right? Come on. Anyway, anyway,
- 1:10so all right.
- 1:13All right. Yes, they're like pencils.
- 1:15Anyway, so on the morning when I was
- 1:17supposed to preach that my first sermon
- 1:20to our whole congregation, right, people
- 1:22are like, "Did we make the right choice
- 1:24hiring this dude?" Okay, I get up there
- 1:26on stage and the first thing out of my
- 1:28mouth is, "Show of hands. Who do you
- 1:30think would win in a fight? Me or a
- 1:32giraffe?"
- 1:33And just to give you guys a chance to
- 1:35respond, who do you think would win in a
- 1:37fight? Me or a giraffe? Hands up for me?
- 1:41>> That's the right answer for my wife back
- 1:42there. Yeah. All right. I'm taking
- 1:45notes. You guys are getting treasure in
- 1:46heaven. Who thinks the giraffe would
- 1:48win? You're wrong. Posers posers.
- 1:52Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Here. Hear
- 1:54me out. All right. Listen. I got I got I
- 1:57I'm I'm
- 1:59All right. Listen. So, before before I
- 2:01preached that Sunday, all right, I
- 2:02actually wanted to know once and for
- 2:04all. This was before chat GPT was a
- 2:06thing, right? So, I couldn't just look
- 2:07that up. Um but so I actually looked up
- 2:09how big a giraffe is, okay? And here's
- 2:12what I found out. Male giraffes are
- 2:15about 18 feet tall and they weigh around
- 2:183,000 pounds. A big one can be 4,500
- 2:22pounds. Uh you can you can look up
- 2:24videos on YouTube and you can just type
- 2:25in the search bar giraffe fights lion
- 2:28and you will just see video after video
- 2:31of a giraffe just straight up like curb
- 2:33stomping a lion. It is crazy. And I
- 2:37don't know why, but like in my head, I
- 2:40was like convinced that giraffes are
- 2:42these like gentle giants with pencil
- 2:44legs who you could just go up to and
- 2:46like hug and they'll nuzzle you and
- 2:48you'll be fine, right? But the reality
- 2:50is Harbor's like, "Where do I go?" I
- 2:53don't know, dude. Just pick pick a
- 2:54direction. But the reality is these
- 2:56animals are big and powerful and
- 2:59terrifying. And I still think I could
- 3:02beat one in a fight. I'm just I'm I
- 3:04think I could if it was like a teenage
- 3:06>> a teenage giraffe. I could look David
- 3:09fought Goliath.
- 3:11>> David fought Goliath.
- 3:14>> Goliath was 9 ft tall and he didn't have
- 3:16pencil legs. Okay.
- 3:23>> Bear bare hands, bro. Bro, or a sling
- 3:27and five smooth boys.
- 3:29>> Anyway, okay. Okay. This has fallen off
- 3:32even worse than the candy canes. Okay,
- 3:34so if you if you've been here with us
- 3:36the last couple of weeks, all right,
- 3:37maybe you already know where I'm going
- 3:38with this. Sometimes I think that we can
- 3:40look at the Christmas story and we can
- 3:41see like a cartoon version of the
- 3:43Christmas story, kind of the way that I
- 3:44looked at a giraffe, right? So we look
- 3:46at like sweet baby Jesus in the manger
- 3:48and we see that there's like Mary and
- 3:50Joseph standing over him and they're
- 3:52like the same age, which they probably
- 3:53weren't, right? And and the reality is
- 3:57my my goal of this series that we've
- 3:58been in the last couple weeks is to give
- 4:00us a big vision of the Christmas story
- 4:02to give us a big vision of who sweet
- 4:05little baby Jesus in the manger is.
- 4:08Right? The the radical, incredible,
- 4:11amazing reality of the Christmas story
- 4:13is that the God of the universe, the God
- 4:16who literally made heaven and earth has
- 4:19come down from heaven and been born as a
- 4:22defenseless little baby to a poor family
- 4:25in a poor town in the middle of Israel.
- 4:28And through that little baby, salvation
- 4:31has come to the world. And if you
- 4:34haven't been here the last two weeks,
- 4:36two Sunday nights, every week we've been
- 4:38looking at these big God moments in the
- 4:40Bible when the curtain kind of gets
- 4:42peeled back a little bit and we get to
- 4:44see the glory and the power and the
- 4:47awesomeness that Jesus has had since he
- 4:49was like with the father in eternity
- 4:52before the world ever got made. Right?
- 4:54So the first week we looked at the Old
- 4:57Testament book of Daniel. In Daniel
- 4:58chapter 7, we got to see Daniel's vision
- 5:01of of the son of man. That's a figure
- 5:03who in Daniel seems like he's just a
- 5:06regular dude, but he comes riding on the
- 5:09clouds of heaven the way only God does.
- 5:11He's given an eternal kingdom the way
- 5:13only God has. He's worshiped by the
- 5:15whole world the way only God is. Right?
- 5:18It's talking about Jesus before Jesus is
- 5:20on the earth. Last week, we looked at a
- 5:22scene from the Gospel of Luke called the
- 5:24transfiguration. Okay? Jesus and a
- 5:27couple of his disciples, they go up onto
- 5:28a mountaintop and there these disciples
- 5:30see the appearance of Jesus transformed
- 5:33so that his face and his clothes are
- 5:35shining with light. We learn that Jesus
- 5:38shines with the glory of God. We learn
- 5:41that he's greater than the Old Testament
- 5:43heroes. And we learn that he's God's own
- 5:46son. And so this week, we're going to be
- 5:48looking at one more big God scene. We're
- 5:51going to be grabbing a scene out of
- 5:52Revelation chapter 1. Okay? So, if you
- 5:55need a Bible, like I say every week, you
- 5:57can grab one of the NLTs or the ESVs
- 5:58that we've got there in the back of the
- 6:00room. Um, now, while you get there,
- 6:04while you you pull that up, Abigail, um,
- 6:06you can flip all the way to the end, go
- 6:08back like 10 pages. That's Revelation
- 6:09chapter 1. Okay. So, now, while you get
- 6:10there, I just want to say, uh, there's a
- 6:13lot of people who have some very
- 6:14different ideas about what Revelation is
- 6:16talking about. Okay? There's people who
- 6:18think that Revelation is pretty much all
- 6:20talking about events that took place in
- 6:22the past. There's other people who think
- 6:24that it's mostly talking about events
- 6:25that are still in the future. There's
- 6:27Christians who are in either position on
- 6:28that. Um, I'm not really going to talk
- 6:30about any of that tonight, right? Uh,
- 6:31what matters for us is that God chose to
- 6:35have his disciple John write revelation
- 6:38at a particular point in time. Okay? So,
- 6:40when this is written, it's about 60
- 6:42years after the life of Jesus. After
- 6:45Jesus has his whole ministry, dies on
- 6:47the cross, rises again, ascends up into
- 6:49heaven. 60 years have gone by since
- 6:51then. Um, and it's written in order to
- 6:54encourage a particular group of
- 6:56Christians who are going through a
- 6:57really hard time at that time. Okay. So,
- 6:59in the first chapter of Revelation,
- 7:01we're going to see John has a vision of
- 7:04Jesus. Remember, this is 60 years after
- 7:07Jesus's death, resurrection, return to
- 7:09heaven. John has a vision of Jesus. And
- 7:13Jesus tells John to write these letters
- 7:16to these seven local churches that were
- 7:18around at that time. Okay? And each of
- 7:21these churches has their own issues. And
- 7:22if you read Revelation 1 through3,
- 7:24you'll you'll see what the issues are.
- 7:26But the biggest issue that's going on in
- 7:28the background of this letter that John
- 7:30is writing is that the Christians are
- 7:32going through some hardcore suffering at
- 7:36the hands of the Roman Empire. See, the
- 7:38the Romans had a rule back then that
- 7:42everyone living in the empire needs to
- 7:44honor their emperor, their king, as a
- 7:46god. And the Christians, because they're
- 7:49Christians, they refuse to do that
- 7:51because they know that honoring the
- 7:53emperor as a god goes against the
- 7:55teachings of Jesus, right? And because
- 7:57they won't go along with worshiping the
- 8:00emperor, these Christians are being
- 8:02targeted for persecution.
- 8:04There's stories uh from the the early
- 8:07church of people who are being thrown
- 8:09into the coliseum and fed to lions.
- 8:11There's people who are losing their
- 8:12friends. There's people who are getting
- 8:13arrested. There's people who are being
- 8:15literally tied to poles and set on fire.
- 8:18Like it is unbelievable what some of
- 8:20these Christians are suffering. And I
- 8:22think that the people in those churches
- 8:24are probably feeling really discouraged,
- 8:27right? They're they're thinking, "Man, I
- 8:29I turned away from these false gods of
- 8:31Rome in order to follow Jesus, and since
- 8:34I did that, my life has gotten so much
- 8:37harder." They think, "Man, I keep
- 8:40praying that God is going to rescue me
- 8:42out of this suffering, but he isn't. My
- 8:45friends and my family have rejected me.
- 8:48People from my church are being arrested
- 8:50or being chased out of town. All those
- 8:52famous apostles of Jesus like Peter and
- 8:55Paul who were his first followers are
- 8:57now being murdered for preaching about
- 8:59Jesus.
- 9:01Where is Jesus when I'm suffering?"
- 9:04Have any of you ever felt that way?
- 9:06Where is Jesus when I'm suffering? I
- 9:09know that like none of you are in danger
- 9:10of of being arrested for being a
- 9:12Christian, right? I hope. Uh but maybe
- 9:15you have had friends who have stopped
- 9:17hanging out with you because you won't
- 9:19stop talking about Jesus. Maybe people
- 9:22have told you that you're judgmental or
- 9:24you're close-minded because you believe
- 9:25what the Bible says about abortion or
- 9:28about waiting until marriage or about
- 9:30homosexuality.
- 9:32Maybe you're scared to live for God
- 9:35because you're afraid that if you do,
- 9:37then your friends won't want to talk to
- 9:38you anymore. Where is Jesus when we're
- 9:42suffering? So the passage we're going to
- 9:45look at right now, Jesus is going to
- 9:47give us the answer to that question.
- 9:49Okay, we're going to read Revelation 1
- 9:50starting in verse 9. We'll go through
- 9:52verse 18. So this is John from his
- 9:54perspective. He's saying it says I John
- 9:57am your brother and your partner in
- 9:59suffering and in God's kingdom and in
- 10:02the patient endurance to which Jesus
- 10:05calls us. Remember he's talking to these
- 10:07churches. I was exiled to the island of
- 10:11Iceland. I was e exiled to the island of
- 10:14Patmos for preaching the word of God and
- 10:16for my testimony about Jesus. It was the
- 10:19Lord's day and I was worshiping in the
- 10:21spirit. Suddenly I heard behind me a
- 10:24loud voice like a trumpet blast. It
- 10:26said, "Write in a book everything you
- 10:29see and send it to the seven churches in
- 10:32the cities of Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum,
- 10:34Thotyra, Sardis, Philadelphia, and
- 10:37Leodysia." There will be a quiz at the
- 10:38end of this.
- 10:40When I turned to see who was speaking to
- 10:42me, here's the vision, okay? When I
- 10:43turned to see who was speaking to me, I
- 10:45saw seven gold lampstands. And standing
- 10:48in the middle of the lampstands was
- 10:50someone like the Son of Man. Remember
- 10:52who that is? He was wearing a long robe
- 10:55with a gold sash across his chest. His
- 10:58head and his hair were white like wool,
- 11:00as white as snow, and his eyes were like
- 11:03flames of fire. His feet were like
- 11:06polished bronze, refined in a furnace,
- 11:08and his voice thundered like mighty
- 11:10ocean waves. He held seven stars in his
- 11:13right hand, and a sharp two-edged sword
- 11:15came from his mouth, and his face was
- 11:18like the sun in all its brilliance. When
- 11:21I saw him, I fell at his feet as if I
- 11:23were dead. But he laid his right hand on
- 11:26me and said, "Don't be afraid. I am the
- 11:29first and the last. I am the living one.
- 11:32I died, but look, I am alive forever and
- 11:36ever, and I hold the keys of death and
- 11:40the grave." Let me pray for us and we'll
- 11:41continue. Heavenly Father, we just thank
- 11:44you, Lord, for your word. We thank you,
- 11:47Lord, that we have access to your
- 11:49scriptures. We thank you, God, for
- 11:52Jesus's life. We thank you for this
- 11:54incredible vision that John received and
- 11:57that now we get to hear about of the
- 11:59glory of Christ. We pray Lord that
- 12:02throughout the Christmas season that you
- 12:03would be reminding us continually of the
- 12:06glory that your son had before his
- 12:08earthly life and the glory that he has
- 12:11now in heaven. We pray all these things
- 12:13in Jesus name. Amen. Okay. So the first
- 12:17thing John does in this passage is he
- 12:19introduces himself to the churches he's
- 12:21writing to, right? He says, "I, John,
- 12:23blah blah blah blah blah." Now the
- 12:24churches all know who John is. Okay, at
- 12:28this point, John is an old old man.
- 12:30Remember, this is 60 years after he was
- 12:33one of Jesus's friends. Okay, 60 years
- 12:35later, he's probably in his 90s, and
- 12:38he's just spent the last 60 years
- 12:40preaching the message of Jesus. And
- 12:43because of John's ministry and impact,
- 12:46the Roman government tries to shut John
- 12:48down by imprisoning him on an island,
- 12:51not in Iceland, but an island in the
- 12:54middle of nowhere. That's the first
- 12:56thing John says to these churches. He
- 12:59calls themself in verse 9, he calls
- 13:01themselves him himself their partner in
- 13:04suffering and in God's kingdom. For
- 13:07these churches that are going through
- 13:08it, John says to them, "I'm going
- 13:11through it, too. Keep going. Keep
- 13:14trusting in Jesus. Keep praying. Keep
- 13:16following him. Don't give up." He says,
- 13:18"Yes, we're going through suffering
- 13:20together, but God has promised to give
- 13:24us his kingdom together."
- 13:27I I think it can be hard for us as
- 13:30Christians living in at the end of 2025
- 13:33to be going through hard stuff sometimes
- 13:35because we can look online on like
- 13:37Instagram or Tik Tok or YouTube or
- 13:39whatever and there are these like
- 13:41Christian influencers and celebrity
- 13:43pastors or like Christian music artists
- 13:46who are making millions of dollars and
- 13:48have like a million followers and
- 13:50everybody loves them, right? Who just
- 13:52seem like they're doing great, right? We
- 13:53can look at these people who seem like
- 13:56they have the good life and we can
- 13:59go,"Well, what's wrong with me? Am I
- 14:01just like not smart enough? Have I
- 14:03sinned too much? Am I just not praying
- 14:05enough? Why am I going through it when
- 14:09there are these other people who are
- 14:10just doing great?" You know, maybe maybe
- 14:12it's not like Forest Frank that you're
- 14:14thinking of, right? Maybe it's just like
- 14:15somebody at school who just seems like
- 14:17they've got all the friends and get
- 14:19amazing grades and get into schools that
- 14:21you wanted to get into and like all of
- 14:23those things. Why are they doing great
- 14:25when I feel like I'm just going through
- 14:27it?
- 14:29That's not how it was back in John's
- 14:31day, okay? With like celebrity pastors
- 14:32and stuff, right? Like John is like
- 14:34their version of a celebrity pastor,
- 14:36okay? This is a guy who was in Jesus's
- 14:38inner circle of followers. If you were
- 14:40here with us last week for the
- 14:42transfiguration, he was literally there
- 14:44on the mountaintop and saw Jesus's face
- 14:46like a neon sign, right? And shining
- 14:48with glory, okay? And that guy when he
- 14:51writes to these churches that are
- 14:53suffering, John says to them, "Hey,
- 14:54dude, me too. Me too." And not only
- 14:58that, but John says to them that we have
- 15:01been called by Jesus to face suffering
- 15:06with endurance and courage.
- 15:09For those Christians who said yes to
- 15:11Jesus in the first century, they knew
- 15:14that following Jesus meant a life of
- 15:16being uncomfortable. It meant a life of
- 15:19being misunderstood and maybe
- 15:21mistreated. It meant a life of being a
- 15:24misfit and a weirdo and of bringing the
- 15:27good news of Jesus to other misfits and
- 15:30weirdos because you know why? Jesus
- 15:32loves those people, too.
- 15:35And my sense is that there are some of
- 15:37you here who know what it's like to have
- 15:40friends drop you because of your
- 15:42relationship with Jesus. I've had that
- 15:44happen. I think that there are others of
- 15:46you who maybe want to live boldly for
- 15:49God, who maybe sense God calling you
- 15:51into a deeper relationship with him, but
- 15:54who are afraid of how your friends might
- 15:56react.
- 15:58Well, here's the encouragement that
- 15:59Jesus brings to these struggling
- 16:01churches. Okay, so John sees this vision
- 16:04of Jesus, right? He sees this vision of
- 16:06Jesus in like full-on God mode. Okay, I
- 16:09found a picture on the internet of what
- 16:11that might have looked like if that
- 16:13might have looked like if we have that.
- 16:15That is like just a straight up artist
- 16:18drawing out what John sees. As you can
- 16:20see, he's got a freaking sword coming
- 16:22out of his mouth. That's crazy. That's
- 16:25terrifying.
- 16:27Right? If if you were here two weeks
- 16:28ago, uh he says that the figure he sees
- 16:31looks like he says the son of man.
- 16:33That's John straight up pointing back to
- 16:35Daniel 7, okay? And just like how we've
- 16:38been talking for the last couple of
- 16:39weeks, there's like a lot of symbolism
- 16:42to the way that Jesus is choosing to
- 16:44reveal himself. It's not like, you know,
- 16:46when Jesus was on his ministry on earth
- 16:48or like chilling with God in heaven that
- 16:50he's just got like a sword coming out of
- 16:51his mouth all the time, right? I I don't
- 16:53think so. I could be wrong, but I don't
- 16:55think. Anyway, here's one thing I want
- 16:56us to notice. Okay, in the picture,
- 16:58you'll see that there are these seven
- 17:00like candlestick things that are all
- 17:01around him, and then there's John
- 17:03freaking out in the back, right? Looking
- 17:04a lot less old than he probably should.
- 17:06Um, but so those seven candlestick
- 17:08things that are floating around him in
- 17:10the picture, the verses right after this
- 17:12say that those candlestick things
- 17:14represent each of the seven struggling
- 17:16churches. And in the vision, John sees
- 17:19Jesus not towering over the candlesticks
- 17:2350 feet tall, not up in heaven and the
- 17:26candlesticks are down on earth, right?
- 17:28He says that John sees Jesus right in
- 17:31the middle of these candlesticks.
- 17:34John sees Jesus right in the middle of
- 17:37these struggling churches.
- 17:40Now, I don't know about you guys, but
- 17:41that is such an encouragement to me that
- 17:44for those believers who are asking
- 17:46Jesus, where are you when I'm suffering,
- 17:49the answer is I'm right there with you.
- 17:53If you're the type of person who takes
- 17:54notes, which Sophia's not here, so maybe
- 17:56none of you, but if you're the type to
- 17:58take notes, I want you to write that
- 17:59down. Jesus is with us in our suffering.
- 18:04Jesus is with us in our suffering.
- 18:06Y'all, we do not follow a God who
- 18:09doesn't care about our suffering. We do
- 18:12not follow a God who doesn't care what's
- 18:14going on with his people. The whole
- 18:16story of the Bible from back to front is
- 18:19God caring deeply about his people and
- 18:23God's rescue mission to save human
- 18:26beings from the consequences of our sin
- 18:28and separation from God. God cares. And
- 18:32although he may not take us out of the
- 18:34hard things that we go through, he is
- 18:36right there with us in our suffering. He
- 18:40is right there with us when your friends
- 18:43ghost you. He is right there with you
- 18:46when people talk bad about you behind
- 18:48your back. He is right there with you if
- 18:51your parents are getting a divorce or
- 18:52when you find out that a family member
- 18:54has a life-threatening illness or when
- 18:56you have an illness. Jesus cares.
- 19:00So that's the first thing. Jesus is with
- 19:02us in our suffering. Here's the second
- 19:04thing to write down. Jesus is greater
- 19:07than our suffering. Jesus is greater
- 19:10than our suffering. I know how hard it
- 19:13can feel to be going through it and to
- 19:16be like, Lord, why aren't you ask
- 19:19answering my prayers? I'm not asking for
- 19:21that much. To feel like you're alone
- 19:24with your hurts or your doubts or your
- 19:26fears.
- 19:28And probably nobody understood that
- 19:29better than these Christians who were
- 19:31suffering at the hands of the Roman
- 19:33Empire. Right? Here's what Jesus says to
- 19:35these churches in the second chap to one
- 19:37of these churches in the second chapter.
- 19:39He says to to a specific church, he
- 19:41says, "I know about your suffering and
- 19:44your poverty, but you are rich." He
- 19:48tells them, "If you remain faithful to
- 19:50me, I will give you the crown of life."
- 19:53You guys, it may look like your life is
- 19:55falling apart or your body is falling
- 19:58apart. You might have no friends, no
- 20:00money. You might not make the sports
- 20:02team you want to. You might not get into
- 20:03the college you want to. You might get
- 20:06fired from your job. Someday, if it
- 20:08doesn't already, someday your body is
- 20:10going to stop working on you and fall
- 20:12apart.
- 20:14But if you are a follower of Jesus, my
- 20:17good news is that that is as bad as it
- 20:19is ever going to get. If you're a
- 20:22follower of Jesus, he has promised to
- 20:24bring you into eternal life in the
- 20:27presence of God forever and ever. And
- 20:31even if your life was just 70 years of
- 20:34straight up non-stop suffering for the
- 20:37entire time you're here on earth, I pray
- 20:39that's not true for any of you. But even
- 20:41if it is, when you have been in heaven,
- 20:44in glory with Jesus for a thousand
- 20:47years, for 10,000 years, for a million
- 20:50years, you're going to look back at that
- 20:52tiny amount of time on earth and think,
- 20:54"Man, I was rich. I was richer than Jeff
- 20:59Bezos. I was richer than Elon Musk."
- 21:01Because look at what my father had
- 21:04waiting for me. Jesus is greater than
- 21:08our suffering. Here's the other piece to
- 21:10that, okay? When John sees this vision
- 21:12of Jesus, it's this like big vision of
- 21:15Jesus, right? It's this demonstration
- 21:17that Jesus is more powerful than all the
- 21:20false gods of Rome. Jesus is more
- 21:22powerful than all the forces of hell and
- 21:25evil and the devil and demons all put
- 21:28together. Okay? The whole rest of the
- 21:30book of Revelation is God showing his
- 21:33total complete power to judge evil and
- 21:37defeat sin once and for all. At the end
- 21:41of Revelation, if you, you know, flip
- 21:43forward like nine pages, at the end of
- 21:45the book, it says that the devil himself
- 21:47is thrown into a lake of fire and after
- 21:51that death and the grave are thrown into
- 21:53the lake of fire, too.
- 21:56Jesus will end death and suffering once
- 21:59and for all. And yes, we do right now
- 22:02have to wait for the day that he does
- 22:04that. But we can wait with confidence
- 22:08knowing what Jesus has promised to do.
- 22:10Knowing that he is powerful and that he
- 22:12will do it. Jesus is greater than our
- 22:16suffering. Jesus cares about our
- 22:18suffering. Here's how we know. Okay,
- 22:20you're probably thinking, "How is this
- 22:21anything to do with Christmas?" All
- 22:22right, here's how we know. Here's how we
- 22:25know that Jesus cares. Here's how we
- 22:26know that he's going to do something
- 22:28about it. At Christmas, the God of the
- 22:33universe steps into human history to
- 22:37suffer with us.
- 22:39Jesus knew what it was like to have his
- 22:42friends betray him. Jesus knew what it
- 22:46was like to be sick, to be hungry, to be
- 22:48tired, to be hurt. Jesus knew what it
- 22:51was like to see the people he loved die.
- 22:55And remember, Jesus is greater than all
- 22:57of those things. Jesus is the God of
- 22:59heaven. He could literally snap his
- 23:01fingers and never have to suffer a
- 23:02second in his entire life. But because
- 23:06he loved you, Jesus let himself go
- 23:09through all of that. Because he loved
- 23:12you, he let himself be born in a human
- 23:15body with all of its weakness and
- 23:18dirtiness. Because he loved you, he let
- 23:21himself go up on a cross and be beaten
- 23:25beyond recognition and die the most
- 23:28painful death imaginable for the sins of
- 23:32the world so that you and I could stand
- 23:35before God with our slate wiped clean.
- 23:38In the vision, uh, John says to Jesus,
- 23:41or Jesus says to John, he says, "I died,
- 23:44but look, I am alive forever and ever,
- 23:47and I hold the keys of death and the
- 23:50grave." Christmas is the moment when
- 23:53Jesus steps into human history. But the
- 23:55mission of Christ on earth is the cross.
- 23:59The Bible says that it was on the cross
- 24:02that Jesus defeated all the evil powers
- 24:05and the devil and the demons combined.
- 24:07Okay, we're going to be digging into
- 24:09this a little more in the new year, but
- 24:10the whole life and ministry of Jesus is
- 24:13pointing to what he will do on the
- 24:15cross. That he will defeat death and the
- 24:18grave once and for all. So that whoever
- 24:20believes in Jesus,
- 24:23no matter how bad they are, but for
- 24:25whoever believes in Jesus, death doesn't
- 24:27get the last word. Suffering doesn't get
- 24:30the last word. Our friends who betray us
- 24:32or turn their back on us or talk talk
- 24:34bad about us or ghost us don't get the
- 24:36last word.
- 24:38Christmas is the moment when God comes
- 24:41down to live with us. But the cross and
- 24:44the resurrection are how we are brought
- 24:47up to live with God. The the passages in
- 24:50Matthew and Luke that we read at
- 24:52Christmas time talk about how a savior
- 24:55has been born. But the way salvation
- 24:57comes is through the cross. Now, I'm
- 25:00pretty much out of time here, so I'm
- 25:02going to just go straight to that Luke 2
- 25:04passage. Okay? I'm going to read us the
- 25:05passage in Luke 2 that we've closed with
- 25:07for the last two weeks. And what I want
- 25:09you to think about, what I want to stick
- 25:11with you is how the Savior who has been
- 25:15born in the manger, the angel says a
- 25:17savior's been born, how that savior
- 25:20who's born in the manger will save his
- 25:23people. So, as Pete comes up to give me
- 25:25a little sweet underscoring,
- 25:28I'll just read this passage from Luke
- 25:30chapter 2.
- 25:32At that time, the Roman emperor Augustus
- 25:35decreed that a census should be taken
- 25:37throughout the Roman Empire. This was
- 25:39the first census taken when Quirinius
- 25:41was governor of Syria. All returned to
- 25:44their own ancestral towns to register
- 25:46for this census. And because Joseph was
- 25:49a descendant of King David, he had to go
- 25:51to Bethlehem in Judea. David's ancient
- 25:54home. He traveled there from the village
- 25:56of Nazareth in Galilee. He took with him
- 25:58Mary, to whom he was engaged, who was
- 26:01now expecting a child. And while they
- 26:04were there, the time came for her baby
- 26:06to be born. She gave birth to her
- 26:09firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in
- 26:11strips of cloth and laid him in a manger
- 26:14because there was no lodging available
- 26:16for them. That night, there were
- 26:18shepherds staying in the fields nearby,
- 26:20guarding their flocks of sheep.
- 26:22Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared
- 26:24among them, and the radiance of the
- 26:26Lord's glory surrounded them. They were
- 26:29terrified, but the angel reassured them.
- 26:31"Don't be afraid," he said. "I bring you
- 26:34good news that will bring great joy to
- 26:37all people. The Savior, yes, the
- 26:40Messiah, the Lord, has been born today
- 26:43in Bethlehem, the city of David. And you
- 26:46will recognize him by this sign. and you
- 26:48will find a baby wrapped snugly in
- 26:51strips of cloth lying in a manger.
- 26:53Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast
- 26:56host of others, the armies of heaven,
- 26:59praising God and saying, "Glory to God
- 27:02in highest heaven and peace on earth to
- 27:05those with whom God is pleased." Let me
- 27:08pray for us.
