- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is Friday.
- 0:16It's the 24th of October. Great to have your company as we
- 0:21gather today at the end of a week to read through some
- 0:25proverbs together. And as we hear these proverbs,
- 0:28these are all observations made by the wise king, inspired by
- 0:33God's Spirit so that you and I can be a little bit wiser.
- 0:38And I guess all of this we read and we hear through that lens
- 0:43that wisdom begins and ends in knowing, loving, and fearing
- 0:49God. And so all of these things are
- 0:51just different ways, different lenses, different approaches,
- 0:54different takes on how do we grow closer to God.
- 0:58Because the closer we are to God, the wiser we are.
- 1:01Because this just occurred to me this week listening to a sermon.
- 1:05Wisdom is not the cumulative total of smarter, wise things
- 1:09that we know. Wisdom is the posture of our
- 1:12heart in submission and love of God.
- 1:17So let these words, Holy Spirit, bring us to a place of love and
- 1:23submission of you, so that we can be your people, wise like
- 1:29you. All right friends, let us read
- 1:33together Proverbs 1715 to 21. Acquitting the guilty and
- 1:49condemning the innocent, both are detestable to the Lord.
- 1:56It is senseless to pay to educate a fool since he has no
- 2:00heart for learning. A friend is always loyal and a
- 2:08brother is born to help in a time of need.
- 2:14It's poor judgement to guarantee another person's debt or put up
- 2:18security for a friend. Anyone who loves to quarrel
- 2:24loves sin. Anyone who trusts in high walls
- 2:28invites disaster. The crooked heart will not
- 2:35prosper. The lying tongue tumbles into
- 2:38trouble. It is painful to be the parent
- 2:44of a fool. There is no joy for the father
- 2:47of a rebel. And again, acquitting the guilty
- 2:55and condemning the innocent, Both are detestable to the Lord.
- 3:01It is senseless to pay to educate a fool since he has no
- 3:05heart for learning. A friend is always loyal and a
- 3:12brother is born to help in time of need.
- 3:19It's poor judgement to guarantee another person's debt or put up
- 3:22security for a friend. Anyone who loves to quarrel
- 3:31loves sin. Anyone who trusts in high walls
- 3:35invites disaster. The crooked heart will not
- 3:41prosper. The lying tongue tumbles into
- 3:44trouble. It is painful to be the parent
- 3:50of a fool. There is no joy for the father
- 3:53of a rebel. Our Lord, thank you for
- 4:05reminding us of your truth. Thank you.
- 4:09As we read these proverbs, we hear your wisdom passed down to
- 4:14us, and in particular, we hear this proverb that talks about
- 4:20the loyalty of a friend and that a brother is born to help in
- 4:25time of need. Our Lord, here we are living in
- 4:30the world where we are told again and again that we are born
- 4:34to fulfil our destiny, that we are born for moments like these,
- 4:40moments of adventure or great pleasure or great achievement.
- 4:46But here the wise King writes that no, we were born to help a
- 4:53brother and sister in their time of need.
- 4:55That is not just a vocation. That is not just an option, but
- 4:59that is why we're here in the 1st place.
- 5:01That's why we were born, to help each other in a time of need.
- 5:08Oh Lord, let that be our lens, that when we encountered those
- 5:13who are struggling that that is our moment to fulfil our
- 5:17birthright, our destiny to help another in their time of need.
- 5:27So shape our hearts that we would see this as our priority
- 5:31and then grace us with opportunities to be your help
- 5:36for those around us. Now You have a better way.
- 5:41Draw us into that better way. Our loving God and wonderful
- 5:44Saviour in whose name we pray. Amen.
