- 0:18I'm Jessica and this is K BA K Rambles where a couple of
- 0:21friends review Korean dramas and we're back with another K drama
- 0:25and I'm back with my good friend Caitlin from No Sleep for Dramas
- 0:29podcast. And how are you, Caitlin?
- 0:31Hello. I'm good, I'm good.
- 0:33How are you Good We've. Been chatting for about 40
- 0:37minutes before we started recording so we we are all
- 0:42warmed up here. Caitlin, you haven't been on
- 0:45Like Just You without Drama trio since Flower of Evil.
- 0:49Yep. It has been a really long time
- 0:51since I've had you on. And this is the funniest thing.
- 0:56But this episode is on Stranger, which is something that we
- 1:01discussed on one of the drama trio episodes.
- 1:03And I was like, would you be willing to come on?
- 1:06I've never seen it. Would you be willing to come on?
- 1:08And you were like, hell yeah, like absolutely.
- 1:10I rewatch it, like the whole bit.
- 1:12And I was like, OK, cool. I initially I had such high like
- 1:18aspirations of watching both seasons of Stranger and
- 1:23reviewing both seasons on this episode, Girl, that didn't
- 1:26happen. That didn't happen.
- 1:27We're just going to do season one.
- 1:28We're just we're just going to review season one because your
- 1:33girl got busy. I watched 10 episodes of another
- 1:37show and then that recording got pushed back.
- 1:40So that ate into my time and then just life happened.
- 1:44So it just didn't happen. I got 30 minutes into episode
- 1:49one of season 2. We're just gonna we're just
- 1:54going to review Stranger season one.
- 1:56So before we do, this is your first time listening.

- 2:41OK, so this is the My Drama list synopsis for season one.
- 2:47Like I said, we are only going to cover season one of Stranger.
- 2:51There are two seasons out so far.
- 2:54Don't worry, I'm making her watch season two.
- 2:56Yeah, because we're going to get, we're going to get there.
- 2:59I told her I was like, we have to circle back and do Season 2.
- 3:02I really still want to watch Season 2, so maybe for spooky
- 3:06season we'll circle back and do Season 2 of Stranger because I'm
- 3:11not done with it. I really do want to finish it.
- 3:15I've had so apparently I'm doing the Lord's work because
- 3:18apparently I've had so many people sense that drama trio
- 3:22episode where I like just I can't remember what it was.
- 3:26Yeah, me neither it. Was like, it was like it was, it
- 3:30was like a recommendation thing. It was like one of the like we
- 3:33did. It was like bring 10 dramas or
- 3:35something. Was it the genre to talk about
- 3:37them? I think maybe, yeah, yeah, it
- 3:39probably is a drunk. OK, Yeah.
- 3:41I've had so many people DM me and be like, I'm watching
- 3:45Stranger, like I just finished season one, how could they do
- 3:49this? Oh my God, I've had like four
- 3:52people message me since that episode and I'm like, thank you.
- 3:55Thank you for actually watching the show.
- 3:57I Yeah. So I'm one of these people
- 4:00because I was so intrigued with your assessment of it and your
- 4:06synopsis of it. You really sold it on that drama
- 4:08tree episode And I was I literally you can hear it like
- 4:12it's live on the show that we recorded.
- 4:14I was like, if we if I do it like for tip Hock, would you
- 4:17come on? And you were like, tell me when
- 4:20like name the date, right. So this is it.
- 4:24Like, we're here finally. So I'll just go ahead and read
- 4:27the synopsis. We'll go through some behind the
- 4:30scenes people, and then we'll just talk about the show.
- 4:32I have to be up front. I did not take a single freaking
- 4:35note on this show. I was just, like, in it, OK?
- 4:38I was, like, immersed. All right, So here's a synopsis.
- 4:41Hung Shimok underwent brain surgery as a child to curb his
- 4:44violent temper, which left him devoid of emotions.
- 4:47Huang becomes a prosecutor known for his piercing intelligence or
- 4:52intellect? That's what I wanted to say,
- 4:54Intellect and logic. But he is ostracized because he
- 4:57lacks empathy and social skills. He is also one of only a handful
- 5:00of upright prosecutors who have refused to take bribes.
- 5:04One day, he encounters a stabbing victim while
- 5:07investigating corruption. He meets Lieutenant Hanyu Jin at
- 5:10the crime scene. They join force forces to root
- 5:13out corruption at the prosecutor's office and solve a
- 5:17serial murder case. Serial murder case.
- 5:20OK, not sure about that bit. All right, this it works.
- 5:25Out it's it's literally it's a basically serial murder case.
- 5:29Is like they have more than three murders.
- 5:32That's a serial murder case, OK. So this aired from June to July
- 5:372017. It is 16 episodes long and it's
- 5:41directed by Ankil Hope. He really hasn't done anything
- 5:45much at all, just things like the glory, The glory part one
- 5:54and two happiness record of youth watcher memories of the
- 6:00Alhambra rooftop prints, which I've highly recommend.
- 6:03Rooftop prints. I, I don't know why, I just love
- 6:06that show and it is written by Isuyon, who was inspired by the
- 6:14Korean saying we cannot rule those who want nothing to create
- 6:20the character of Shemalk, which I thought was interesting.
- 6:23I'm not sure exactly what that means.
- 6:29You can muse about that if you if you like Caitlin, but I think
- 6:33there might be something lost in translation.
- 6:35I truly do. She's had a pretty good run
- 6:39because she's done things like Life from 2018, which is a
- 6:44medical drama with Ido Mook and a ton of cast members from
- 6:48Stranger, including the male lead.
- 6:50She also wrote Stranger 2, the sequel, in 2020.
- 6:55And then she's been partnering with Disney lately because she's
- 6:57done Grid, a Disney Plus show from 2022 with Sulkung Jun from
- 7:03Are You Human Too? And I thought when I saw him, I
- 7:07was like, Oh my God. And then Blood Free, she wrote
- 7:11Blood Free, which is currently airing on Disney Plus with
- 7:14Jujuyun and Han Yoju. Yeah, which is so good if you
- 7:19need a recommendation. So you're watching it?
- 7:22Yeah, yeah, I'm liking it a lot. All right, but so this show
- 7:29Stranger stars toe so MU he plays Huang Shimok.
- 7:33He's been in about 18 movies and a few TV shows like divorce
- 7:37attorney Shin. He is the divorce attorney Shin.
- 7:41He's also been in Sisyphus, The Myth, Stranger 2, The sequel,
- 7:44Life. Like I said before, God's Gift,
- 7:4814 Days and The King's Doctor. This is my first time ever
- 7:52seeing this man. Oh, really?
- 7:54Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 7:55OK. Have you seen him as a good?
- 7:57Actor Yeah, yeah, I watched this.
- 8:00Sisyphus. I don't recommend it and it's
- 8:02not for the actors. The writing is horrible,
- 8:05obviously. Stranger, Stranger 2 God's gift.
- 8:10I have watched, but I did not watch Life and I have not
- 8:14watched The King's Doctor All. Right.
- 8:17And then his. I like him.
- 8:18He's good. He's like, it's like, I think
- 8:21Stranger is my favorite character he has played really,
- 8:25but I have I have a soft spot for his like character, but he
- 8:29is a very versatile actor. Like he, he, he chooses roles
- 8:35that you would never picture him doing and then he does the role
- 8:40and you're like, oh, OK, I understand why he did this role
- 8:44'cause he's not like in, in my mind, he's not the typical
- 8:50Korean actor. Like he doesn't have some like
- 8:54especially appearance wise. You look at him and you're like,
- 8:58it's an interesting look. Like people don't really, I, I
- 9:01don't, I don't normally see people like talking about him a
- 9:04lot, especially when it comes to like, oh, he's a good looking
- 9:07guy. I think he's a good looking guy,
- 9:09but he doesn't come up in those types of lists.
- 9:11OK, I was about to slide in and be like, he's super handsome.
- 9:15I find him. I know, I know.
- 9:16Yeah, OK. He's very handsome and he.
- 9:19I mean, I don't know, I just. I've never seen those types of
- 9:22lists. I think he's.
- 9:23Very man. In those type of lists, yeah.
- 9:25But I think he's a very versatile actor.
- 9:27He doesn't. He chooses roles that you
- 9:32normally wouldn't think he could do or like, picture him doing.
- 9:35And then he does them and he does them really, really good.
- 9:38So I, I love him as an actor. I wish he would do more.
- 9:42But he, he's a, he's a very much a movie actor.
- 9:45Like he does a lot of movies. Yeah.
- 9:48So then his Co star is Bay Doona.
- 9:51That Bay Doona she plays Hanyo Jin the cop.
- 9:55She is the Watson to his Sherlock in this show and she's
- 10:01been in about 21 ish movies, including a lot that is in our
- 10:09side of the world. You know like rebel moon parts
- 10:13one and two, which are terrible movies.
- 10:18She's she's. Good in them though apparently I
- 10:20haven't seen them. But I haven't.
- 10:21I refuse. So she's also little about me.
- 10:27Umm, she's also been in Broker from 20/22 with IU.
- 10:30She's worked with that director before in umm, something about a
- 10:35doll. I, it's like a blow, uh, air
- 10:39doll I think is the name of the movie that she was in.
- 10:43Anyway, she's worked with that director before, the director of
- 10:45Broker. She's been in Persona also with
- 10:48IUI. Don't know if you've seen
- 10:50Persona. Persona's bizarre.
- 10:51I did. It is bizarre, but I have seen
- 10:54it. OK, me too.
- 10:54It is Netflix, yeah, Tunnel from 2016.
- 10:58I really want to see Tunnel. Really good.
- 11:01It's it's really good. Yeah, Jupiter.
- 11:05It's heartbreaking, but it's good.
- 11:06Oh no, don't tell me Tunnel's heartbreaking.
- 11:08Well, I mean like I I wouldn't. The premise already sounds
- 11:10heartbreaking. Yeah, the yeah, it's like, in
- 11:13terms of like, just because of the premise, it's like a very
- 11:16intense, heartbreaking show, but like.
- 11:19Well, tunnel, Tunnel the movie. Yeah, the movie.
- 11:23From 2016. So for those who don't know what
- 11:25tunnel is about, I read the synopsis and I was like, I
- 11:27definitely need to see, need to see this movie.
- 11:29It is this man who is on his way to his daughter's birthday party
- 11:33to celebrate his daughter's birthday.
- 11:35He's got nobody else in the car with him and he's got his
- 11:39daughter. He's bringing his daughter's
- 11:40birthday cake with him. A tragic tunnel collapse happens
- 11:45while he's driving through the tunnel and when he wakes up from
- 11:49this this collapse, he's stuck inside his car with nothing but
- 11:552 bottles of water and the cake. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:59And like that's that's the setup.
- 12:00Wife. Yeah.
- 12:01And Baidu no plays his wife or ex-wife.
- 12:06I want to say they were divorced or separated.
- 12:10I don't think they were like happily married, but I could be
- 12:12wrong. I I I haven't watched the movie
- 12:14in a very long time. I really want to say it.
- 12:17So that's 2016 Jupiter Ascending, which is one of the
- 12:20worst movies ever made. Cloud Atlas, one of the
- 12:23strangest movies ever made. That's with Tom Hanks, Hugo
- 12:26Weaving, Halle Berry, big All Star cast, super weird.
- 12:29The host from 2006, that's Bong Joon Ho.
- 12:32Like amazing movie, amazing monster movie.
- 12:35Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance from 2002.
- 12:38Bei Duna almost doesn't even look like herself because she's
- 12:40so young. This is like a / 20 years old.
- 12:432002 This is a Pachanuk movie. It's part of the Vengeance
- 12:47trilogy. I covered it on the Patreon feed
- 12:52last year during Was it last year or the year before?
- 12:56I can't remember because I watched all three movies in the
- 12:59Vengeance trilogy. So that put me in a real Bad Men
- 13:03mental place, but I did it anyway.
- 13:08So that's her movie work and then she's also been in a
- 13:11handful of TV. Not as much TV as she has done
- 13:14movie work, but she's done since 8:00.
- 13:18From 2015 to 2018 she was a recurring character like she was
- 13:21on this show. She was.
- 13:22Fantastic. And Sansa Q was also in that
- 13:27show, which, yeah, that's where I first saw her.
- 13:30I first saw her in Sensei, right.
- 13:33Which they're chemistry. I need them in a Korean drama
- 13:36together. Like their chemistry is so good
- 13:39at that. Show my Atlanta so Sense 8 that
- 13:41was a real big hit for Netflix and that's why she's in so many
- 13:45Netflix movies and so many Netflix shows including Kingdom
- 13:50which was in 2019 and season 2 aired in 2020.
- 13:55Kingdom is one of the best K dramas ever.
- 13:58This was right at the start of when Netflix was investing in K
- 14:03dramas right? And BAE Doona was like a Netflix
- 14:07darling from Sense 8. And Kingdom is a zombie show of
- 14:14epic proportions that is so good.
- 14:16Jijiyun is in it as well. Stranger Two comes along in
- 14:202020. The Silence C which is also a
- 14:22Netflix sci-fi show. K drama.
- 14:27Not very good, but it's a, you know, out there if you want to
- 14:29watch it was. It was fine.
- 14:31It wasn't like the best ever, but it was decent.
- 14:33Exactly. And then she will be in family
- 14:36plan later this year. I don't know what that's about
- 14:39at all, but I. Want to say it's another like
- 14:44family of superheroes but I could be wrong.
- 14:47Is it really? I I want to say it, it is oh.
- 14:50Do you know that sounds familiar?
- 14:51When they were announcing like the cast and Beiduna was in it.
- 14:55I think it is like a superhero thing.
- 14:59OK so that these two are the main.
- 15:02I've seen, I've seen most of what BAE Doonas does.
- 15:06I love her. I feel like I've seen a lot of
- 15:08her too. I don't think she's a bad
- 15:12actress at all. I think she's amazing.
- 15:15And obviously she started as a model, kind of branched out and
- 15:18made her name doing these movie like for all tours, right?
- 15:23The Pacha Nuk and the Bong Joon Ho movies and the I forgot the
- 15:28name of the director of Broker, but like that director too.
- 15:31These three movies kind of put her on the map.
- 15:34Right. Yeah.
- 15:35And since then, she's been a staple of Western and Korean
- 15:40media. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:43She was like one of the first, even though I have been watching
- 15:46Korean dramas years before she ever came onto the scene.
- 15:51She was like one of the real first Korean actors that I
- 15:56witnessed in American entertainment.
- 15:59And nowadays you kind of see them pop up, like Kim Ji Hoon is
- 16:03going to join Butterfly, for example.
- 16:06But like back then when Sense 8 was happening, that did not
- 16:10happen. That did not happen especially.
- 16:13Because could we have like Daniel Dae Kim in Lost?
- 16:15Yeah. And The thing is like and that
- 16:17was even like Korean American like the fact they brought up.
- 16:20Korean atrocious. Yeah, like.
- 16:23When he spoke Korean, yeah. The fact that they brought over
- 16:26like in sense 8, it made sense because it did take place in
- 16:29Korea. Like they had to find Korean
- 16:31actors, but like that was unheard of.
- 16:34Usually you'd see like Asian Americans like they could.
- 16:38They sometimes even didn't use the right ethnicity when they
- 16:41were using Asians in American shows.
- 16:43Like, so her being on Sense 8 and so Q is also.
- 16:49And like, that was like my first exposure of, like, Korean actors
- 16:54in an American show or movie. Yeah.
- 16:58And not just in Korean productions.
- 17:00Yeah, so already big cast. I don't want to go into
- 17:06everybody else that's in this show.
- 17:08Maybe Shin Hai San, who plays Unsu.
- 17:12You've seen her before. I I I don't have her filmography
- 17:15in front of me. EQ hyung as well is also in
- 17:18this. I always consider him his loony
- 17:20from prison playbook, that's how.
- 17:23Her son was in like my 18th life for example.
- 17:28Yeah, see you in my 19th. Life 19th.
- 17:31Life. Yeah.
- 17:31See you in my 19th. Thank you for dragging my
- 17:33memories. See you in my 19th Mr. Queen.
- 17:35Mr. Queen shit, 30 but 17, which is I love that show.
- 17:43So those are some shows from her.
- 17:45And yeah, so there's some other people in the show as well, but
- 17:49large, large cast, ensemble cast.
- 17:52But those two, Chosung Wu and Beituna, are it like they are
- 17:57the top billing of their show. This show did very, very well,
- 18:03not just in ratings but also critically.
- 18:07It did amazing. It was making topless on like
- 18:12New York Times, like best list, best shows of 2017.
- 18:16I remember seeing that, like I remember seeing that list and
- 18:21when they, when they put that out, 'cause this is a 2017 show,
- 18:24like it was their pic, The Stranger was a picture on that
- 18:28article. It wasn't even like just like in
- 18:31the article, I was like, and my, because my parents knew that I
- 18:35watched Korean dramas, they like, pointed it out to me and
- 18:39they're like, my dad's like, is this a good show?
- 18:42And I'm like, is this a good show?
- 18:44Are you kidding me? It's a New York Times, of course
- 18:46it's a good show. But like, that was a big deal.
- 18:49That was like the first time I had ever witnessed a Korean
- 18:53drama in like The New York Times Best of 2017 shows.
- 18:58Like nowadays you kind of see that more commonly.
- 19:00Like Kingdom was in it and Extraordinary Attorney Wu was in
- 19:06it a couple years ago whenever that aired.
- 19:08But like, that time was like the first time I had ever seen a
- 19:11Korean drama in that whole article.
- 19:15It was a big deal. So this thing did really well at
- 19:19the Beck Song Awards, the 54th Beck Song Awards, and I am going
- 19:24to read to you all the things that it won and was nominated
- 19:27for. So it won just clean sweep the
- 19:30Teh Song, the grand prize for TV, which is something that is
- 19:34not announced beforehand. They don't announce who they are
- 19:38thinking of nominee. They don't announce the
- 19:40nominees. They don't announce who they are
- 19:42considering for the day song until the night of and you they
- 19:47announce the winner. They're just like this, this
- 19:49person, this team, this TV show, this film won the day song,
- 19:54which is incredible. Then later on they released like
- 19:57who was in consideration and stuff like that, which is crazy.
- 20:00But Tosung Wu, our male lead, won Best Actor cleanly.
- 20:05Just won ISU Yon. ISU Yon, the screenwriter won
- 20:10best screenplay. This is her debut work.
- 20:14This is her first K drama she's ever written.
- 20:17She won the best screenplay at the Beck Song Awards.
- 20:20Incredible. This was not obviously nominated
- 20:23for best drama. It lost to Mother that year.
- 20:29It was on Kilhole. The director was nominated for
- 20:31best director. He lost to Kim Yun Yun Chol for
- 20:36The Lady in Dignity and EQ hyung who is loony from Prison
- 20:42Playbook was nominated for Best New Actor and he lost to Yung
- 20:47Sejong for Temperature of Love. When I saw Temperature of Loving
- 20:51Yung Sejong, I like had a little conniption there.
- 20:53I was like, Oh my God, I fucking love that show and I love Yung
- 20:57Sejong in that show. So I was like, wow, he lost to
- 21:01like a good newcomer, right? I, I, I just felt that it was
- 21:05warranted because this guy was good, but like, not that.
- 21:09I mean, it was he was a male lead in temperature of love and
- 21:11stuff like that. He was just like a side
- 21:13character in strangers. So anyway, I, I was reeling with
- 21:17that reveal anyway, nominated 8 times.
- 21:21Crazy. Yeah, it was every.
- 21:25It was everywhere. 3-4 anyway, nominated a lot of times.
- 21:29I'm not sure if it was eight times, but a lot of time.
- 21:32It was everywhere. Like it it took like it had
- 21:35ratings. Like there's a reason why they
- 21:37made season 2. Like everybody was really
- 21:40surprised when they announced season 2 for this show.
- 21:43I was not. I was like, dude, do you
- 21:45remember how popular this show was?
- 21:47Like it is it was a juggernaut in 2017.
- 21:51Like ratings were double digits all the time.
- 21:55It was obviously nominated a lot got recognition in New York
- 21:58Times like that again, that never happened.
- 22:00So like everybody was like, why are they making a season 2?
- 22:03They never make season 2. And I'm like, it makes sense for
- 22:06stranger. They're hecking they're they're
- 22:08making like a spin off now this year.
- 22:11So like I totally am. This is going to be one of those
- 22:15shows that they're going to bring back every few years.
- 22:17Like it's just built that way. I would not be surprised if we
- 22:20get a season three. In my opinion, it just it's
- 22:25yeah, I was not surprised whatsoever.
- 22:26They made a season 2. Everybody else was.
- 22:28I was like it makes total sense. Well, they built it I think to
- 22:34be a multi season. Yeah, they did.
- 22:38Yeah. And even season 2 ends up that
- 22:41way where they could easily do a season three.
- 22:43Like not even connected to either one of the other seasons.
- 22:47Not that Season 2 is not really connected to season one, but
- 22:50like they, they built it that way.
- 22:52It's kind of like Taxi Driver, like you can kind of just do a
- 22:55season, yeah, every three years, every four years, whatever,
- 22:59whatever. Yeah, it's great.
- 23:01So this was my first time watching Stranger and my
- 23:07experience watching Stranger, which let me just prep in case
- 23:11you've gone this far and you didn't.
- 23:13You can't quite wrap your head around what it is.
- 23:15It is a crime thriller, drama. There is no romance.
- 23:19We want romance, but there's not.
- 23:21We want romance, so. There's no romance.
- 23:22OK, That's what this is. So I went into this thinking I
- 23:28have pretty good judgement of characters and people, and I can
- 23:36figure out who the killer is and who the mastermind is because I
- 23:43just have watched a lot of media and can do this or whatever.
- 23:47Baby, I didn't know who was go, who was who, what was going on,
- 23:53who was the killer, who was the mastermind.
- 23:56If things were changing each episode and you could only trust
- 24:00two people and that was the two leads, Bei Duna and Shimo, the
- 24:04the male lead, I was riveted to the screen.
- 24:11I could not tear my eyes away. And it was right around episode
- 24:1510 or 11 that I started getting real lost.
- 24:19I was like, Oh my God, I don't know what's.
- 24:21I literally was like, I have no idea what's going on because
- 24:28they were doubling back on themselves.
- 24:30And they were people that they had sort of cleared from
- 24:36suspicion were back on the table.
- 24:37You know what I'm saying? Like it was, it was very
- 24:40cyclical and. Right, right.
- 24:44If, if that's not your bag, if, if crime thrillers are not your
- 24:48bag and rooting out corruption in the police force or the
- 24:54prosecution service is not your idea of a good time, I'm sorry,
- 24:57don't watch. But this was so exciting to
- 25:01watch because I can't, I don't know how to put it, but it was
- 25:05very suspenseful. It was very Sherlocky and.
- 25:12Right. I had, I had a tremendous sight.
- 25:16I have crazy eyes right now. I I do talking about this.
- 25:20I was sending, I was sending Caitlin these crazy voice memos
- 25:27of like, I just got to this episode and this happened.
- 25:30I don't know what's going on. I don't know who to trust.
- 25:33I I thought this person was good, but they're not like, I
- 25:36need help. Like, I was sending her really
- 25:39unhinged messages and all the Caleb would send back would be
- 25:43like, yeah, I told you it was crazy.
- 25:46Like that's all. There would be no help at all.
- 25:50She would just be like, Yep, keep going.
- 25:53Because I didn't want to say anything because I'm afraid I
- 25:56wouldn't spoil it. I had one guess it was wrong,
- 26:00like it was I'm telling you. I was very entertained.
- 26:05Yeah, you were super entertained.
- 26:07And every time we would talk, you would just be like, Oh my
- 26:09God, I would send you these crazy gifts of like, screaming
- 26:13like things. And Oh my God, it was such a bit
- 26:17of a haunted house thing where it's like you turn a corner and
- 26:21it was you didn't know what was there.
- 26:24And that is the best kind of plot, the best kind of writing
- 26:30that it's not, you're not being taken for a ride in the in a in
- 26:35the wrong sense. You're being taken for a ride in
- 26:37the best sense. Right, right.
- 26:41So I cannot recommend Stranger enough.
- 26:46I think it's a master class in telling a story and and putting
- 26:52a lot of puzzle pieces in front of you.
- 26:55And the audience is still like, I don't know how to put this
- 26:59together. Right.
- 27:00And that's what I loved about it because again, I watch a ton of
- 27:04crime dramas and so if I can predict the ending, I usually
- 27:10drop them because I, I, I don't know, my mind works in a way.
- 27:15I'm not like boasting or anything.
- 27:16There's definitely a lot that I'm unpredictable, like I can't
- 27:19predict, but there are somewhere it's like, I totally know where
- 27:21this is going. I'm not going to watch it.
- 27:24Stranger was one of those where I had no idea what was going on.
- 27:29Both seasons, like both seasons. Like I think the other thing
- 27:33that helps out this show too is like you have multiple mysteries
- 27:37that pop up. So it's not just one crime in in
- 27:41stranger. You have murder, you have
- 27:43corruption. You have like just sketchy
- 27:47people like everything so and then.
- 27:49Everything. And what are they hiding like?
- 27:52And everything connected by the end.
- 27:55But like, you have so much crime and so many threads going on
- 28:00there's you can't predict it. And it's just masterfully woven
- 28:04together at the end. Yeah, yeah.
- 28:09So I don't know how much else to say because it's it.
- 28:13We'll get into spoiler territory very quickly.
- 28:16Yeah. And I don't got any notes
- 28:19either. I just said, I said at the top,
- 28:20like I came in raw, like I don't have any notes.
- 28:23I didn't take anything down when I was watching this show.
- 28:26So I almost feel like we should just give our ratings or maybe
- 28:31like no, even like favorite scenes and stuff.
- 28:36We'll get into spoilers. It would be spoilers, yeah.
- 28:41Maybe is there a character that you really connected with?
- 28:44I love Shebuk like he's he's my favorite.
- 28:47I always I have a soft spot for like his type of character where
- 28:52it's like the quiet type, the calculating type, the like
- 29:02observant type, like I couldn't I relate a lot to that type of
- 29:06character. So I immediately loved him out
- 29:10the get go. And then also just because he
- 29:13his character brings a comedy side to the show that like he
- 29:17never would have expected just because his brain works
- 29:21differently that he doesn't. And I said this in the drama
- 29:25trio, like he can't comprehend. Like, for example, we know all
- 29:29of Korea has these like, society rules, how you have to be
- 29:33respectful to your elders and like respect the rules and
- 29:38authority and stuff. His mind can't comprehend that
- 29:41Like they, he's like, why the heck are we following this?
- 29:45And so he has much, a lot of these scenes in both seasons
- 29:48where he's just like, Oh, yeah, I'm supposed to shake your hand
- 29:52because you're like my son back or like, yeah, I should answer
- 29:56that question because you're my son, BAE.
- 29:58But like, why am I answering this question?
- 30:01Like it's. And he brings A and he like in
- 30:04his own mind. Like he doesn't see it as
- 30:06comedy. He's just like, it's a logical
- 30:09thinking of his brain. So then BAE Doon is like you
- 30:14like you like, she explains it, which is why it's the Sherlock
- 30:18Watson relationship. But yeah, I just, I love his
- 30:23character. And then I love him and Beijuna,
- 30:25like, together. Like, I love their relationship
- 30:28so much. But yeah, I absolutely love his
- 30:32character in this drama. I do too.
- 30:35I love them both. I loved Shimuk so much.
- 30:38I thought he was very endearing. Like considering the fact that
- 30:42he has very little empathy. He's not smiling, he's not
- 30:47laughing, he's not joking around with people.
- 30:49There's very little to latch onto.
- 30:53I found him incredibly endearing.
- 30:55Yeah. And I think that goes to show of
- 30:58like chosen Wu's like acting and like how he portrayed the
- 31:04character because even when you are playing a character with
- 31:09that type of like emotional block, you still latch on to
- 31:15something with that. Character, in my opinion, it's
- 31:18hard to do, yeah. Like you can see him constantly
- 31:23working things out and the gears turning constantly and him
- 31:31questioning things and how to. Like the social situations thing
- 31:35is very comical at times and then also very tense at times
- 31:39because it's suddenly very high in their society.
- 31:43It's very high stakes, especially when you're dealing
- 31:46with corruption and the person that he's not shaking hands
- 31:49with, he's invested, he's investigating and possibly could
- 31:52have done something very terrible.
- 31:55Right. So then it becomes this whole
- 31:57like thing, right? Like it spirals out of control,
- 32:00his sort of withholding of respect in in these situations.
- 32:07So you're kind of it's in some instances you're like, oh,
- 32:10that's funny, like he didn't do this.
- 32:11And then others, others you're like, is he making a statement?
- 32:14Is he just being, you know, himself or does he he definitely
- 32:20doesn't trust that he distrust this person.
- 32:22So is he doing this on purpose? Like is he trying to get a rise
- 32:26out of this person? So you're kind of like also
- 32:29coming across all of these reasons why he couldn't be doing
- 32:34for these performative actions, right?
- 32:40And it's so interesting to read the room and read it like he
- 32:45might. And then also, it's interesting
- 32:50to see where like, even though he is not intentionally doing
- 32:57some of these social things, he just like, realizes after the
- 33:00fact, like, oh, I should have done this or oh, I need to do
- 33:04that. Like, what else makes him
- 33:06endearing is like, he still has people that want to be his
- 33:09friend. Yeah.
- 33:11There's just something about his character, even within the show
- 33:14that. Other characters still want to
- 33:16righteous. Yeah.
- 33:19And commanding that people want to get to know him.
- 33:25Yeah, yeah. And so and.
- 33:27There's not much to get to know and like.
- 33:29Exactly. That's what's.
- 33:30Funny is that like there's not, it's very shallow, shallow water
- 33:33there. So yeah.
- 33:35And it's not like people treat him as a child.
- 33:37Like, that's not, that's not what we're saying either.
- 33:39It's like they very much understand he's adult, He
- 33:42doesn't act like a child or anything like that, but like
- 33:45there's just something as I can't like really describe it
- 33:49anyway. There's something really
- 33:51endearing about him, even though.
- 33:55But it's a a strength. It's like it's not a weak
- 33:59weakness, endearing like you would think maybe in a child
- 34:04who's in very big situations like the the ones in the show.
- 34:08Right. It's like a strength.
- 34:10Yeah. In the show.
- 34:12Yeah. And then Beiduna, who I love, I,
- 34:15I connected a lot with Beiduna because she is LED a lot by her
- 34:21feelings and emotions, but she's very calculating and observant
- 34:26as well. And I just love the how dogged
- 34:31she is. Yeah.
- 34:32In the pursuit of justice and in the pursuit of, you know,
- 34:39criminals and things, she's running after people and like
- 34:41using judo on them and stuff. And I'm like, get it, girl.
- 34:44And I love how she has this very nuanced take, especially like
- 34:49towards the middle and like end of the show.
- 34:51She has this very nuanced take on good and bad because no one
- 34:55is all good and no one is all bad.
- 34:57We are all Shades of Grey. And she has this opinion that's
- 35:03like we like all of us are pretty.
- 35:07Like none of us are good. Right, right.
- 35:11You know what I'm saying? Like no matter like what, we
- 35:14think that we're better than some of these criminals because
- 35:17we didn't murder someone or do this or that and the other like
- 35:20we're not good either just because we didn't do this
- 35:25criminal thing. Like what makes us good?
- 35:28Are we better than them? Like just, you know, she has
- 35:30this really cool ideology that I, because I took no notes and
- 35:35didn't get the actual quote. I'm paraphrasing.
- 35:38But I really appreciate her take and how she is basically like,
- 35:44look, we're all kind of sucky, right?
- 35:47Let's just try and be a little better, yeah?
- 35:51But I think that's why she's drawn to Shimak so much is
- 35:55because even though like he has this past where he wasn't very
- 36:02good and that also still plays into that quote.
- 36:07Currently, when the show is when he's an adult, he really is the
- 36:11epitome of a good like, which is ironic because he's like doesn't
- 36:18understand the societal norms and everything, but he literally
- 36:22is the epitome of a good Korean citizen 'cause he.
- 36:26Follows the. Rules and like.
- 36:28He's fair. Fair and like doesn't take
- 36:31bribes. Like he's the best you could
- 36:33possibly be in that situation. Which to take?
- 36:37Like not take bribes. That's like bare minimum.
- 36:39Exactly like. Bare minimum, don't take bribes.
- 36:42Exactly. And like you'll see in the show
- 36:44that he does like there are things that he regrets and could
- 36:49have done better and could have done that.
- 36:52But like it's, it's not like the bad type of thing that like you
- 36:58other see other people do. So like it's really interesting.
- 37:00Just like they do it, they do not having that mindset.
- 37:04And then meeting see, Mukim is like, OK, like he's like the
- 37:08best example ever. And he still has flaws, which we
- 37:13will we find out later on. They're both willing to call
- 37:18their colleagues out on their shit.
- 37:20Which? Yeah, yeah.
- 37:22Even today, if you were in a similar situation in, in a,
- 37:27you're in the Justice Department, right?
- 37:32Are you going to call out your colleagues who have seniority
- 37:36over you in a very hierarchical society?
- 37:42I don't know like. That's who.
- 37:44And who like expect you to not call them out, right?
- 37:48To have their back, to do the corrupt things they do to to
- 37:54make sure the the reputation, the reputation of the entity as
- 38:00a whole stays intact. Right.
- 38:02Yeah, yeah. That's a major theme in this
- 38:04show. Yes, huge.
- 38:08And they both say fuck that. Yes I will, and it's amazing
- 38:12you're you're taking that's the ride.
- 38:14That's literally the whole show is them going to bat for truth
- 38:19and justice and the American way.
- 38:21I'm just kidding. Not the American way, but you
- 38:24know what I'm saying? It's like just what is right,
- 38:28right, period. And I really just enjoyed their
- 38:35camaraderie, their journey, how she softens him, how when
- 38:39they're in situations together, she kind of plays the good cop
- 38:43and he, because he's so direct, plays the bad cop like he
- 38:47doesn't like because he has no filter.
- 38:49He has no like levels to things. It's just one tone the entire
- 38:56time. He inherently comes across as
- 38:58the bad cop and then she can come in and sort of like finagle
- 39:04and charm her way into being the good cop and get different
- 39:08information or whatever. So I love their dynamic together
- 39:14throughout the show and them eating together is great because
- 39:18they what is it? She?
- 39:20He doesn't like salty food and he's constantly and they don't
- 39:24say what it is until later in the show because they just show
- 39:27him like going to eat by himself, which again, is very
- 39:32he's an outcast in the prosecution service.
- 39:36So he goes to eat by himself. He doesn't give a shit.
- 39:39Everyone else gives a shit. He doesn't give a shit that he's
- 39:41eating by himself And he he's constantly putting water in his
- 39:44soup. And you see him kind of going
- 39:46like, oh, like kind of do having these reactions to the soup, to
- 39:52the food. And you're like, is it too hot?
- 39:54Like, is it what, what is it? Is it too spicy?
- 39:57Like what's going on? No, it's too salty.
- 40:00Right. And she understands him.
- 40:02Like they go to eat at one of those tents, I forgot what
- 40:05they're called, but like the tents, the outdoor tents, right?
- 40:08And he orders a soup. He does the same thing.
- 40:10And she's like, oh, it's too salty.
- 40:12And it she understands him. Yeah, well, the other thing is,
- 40:16is she's the only one that allows him to eat.
- 40:18Like that's also the running joke in both seasons is where
- 40:22it's like he goes to take a bite and like something.
- 40:25He gets a call. He gets a call.
- 40:27Or like somebody walks in or like whatever.
- 40:31So like. The you.
- 40:33The only times you see him eat is if he's with her.
- 40:37So it's like, or even like alone when he's in his apartment.
- 40:41You'd never see him eat ever in his apartment.
- 40:45So yeah. And that's also like a running
- 40:47joke where he, like, has no time to eat ever.
- 40:50Yeah, I also like the the the juxtaposition of like his
- 40:55apartment is very sterile and there's no personality but
- 41:00there. But something about him and the
- 41:03way that he plays his character, Tosungu is warm.
- 41:08Yeah, yeah. Like he treats people with a
- 41:12baseline respect. Right.
- 41:15Yeah. No matter their status.
- 41:20And the personality that starts to inject itself into his home
- 41:25comes from her because of the little doodles that she gives
- 41:29him, right? And instead of throwing them
- 41:32out, which you would expect this dude to just be like, OK, like,
- 41:34she threw a brain. And like, this little bit is
- 41:37like, my emotional capacity. And this part is like, my desire
- 41:42to finish the case and think like, it was like, this thing in
- 41:46the show, this moment in the show for this one doodle.
- 41:50And you expect him to throw out these doodles, which accumulate.
- 41:54Instead, he saves them. Yeah, because he looks annoyed
- 41:57when she gets these. Yeah.
- 41:59These doodles to him, yeah. And later on in the show, she's
- 42:03in his apartment and she sees them, and she just, like, smiles
- 42:06to herself. And those moments are so cute
- 42:11and, like, establish this relationship between them.
- 42:16And it's those moments, those glimmers between them that
- 42:20you're like, why aren't they together?
- 42:22Exactly? That's what we mean.
- 42:25That's what we mean by there should be romance, but there
- 42:28isn't. There's literally no romance at
- 42:30all in this show. It's because they have such a
- 42:36connection. Right.
- 42:38Yeah, that's that's that's going on.
- 42:41Two seasons. Two seasons, No romance going
- 42:44on. To see that, oh God, 32
- 42:48episodes. I honestly don't.
- 42:50I mean, knowing the character like you know there you can
- 42:55never comprehend romance really. Like it just won't.
- 42:58It wouldn't make sense. It really wouldn't.
- 43:01So I think like this relationship is pretty much as
- 43:04close of like quote UN quote or romance you will get with his
- 43:07character. Like he just cannot comprehend
- 43:10that at all because he's just too logical.
- 43:16So it wouldn't make sense if all of a sudden they started dating
- 43:19in like season three or something.
- 43:21It's just, it wouldn't make sense at all.
- 43:23But we can hope and pray that would happen.
- 43:26And like look off into the distance and kind of look at him
- 43:29in the alternative world because they they have such chemistry
- 43:33like the. Chemistry is so.
- 43:34Good. Yeah, good.
- 43:38Anyway, I don't know if there's anything else we can talk about
- 43:41without getting into, like, true spoilers, Right?
- 43:44Right. Anyway, we did our best.
- 43:46What would you rate this show out of five sold you bottles?
- 43:49I think I know the answer, yeah. Like I would rate this one of my
- 43:55favorite shows. Oh my God, Yeah, yeah.
- 43:59I would rate this 4 1/2 out of five and the .5 is literally
- 44:03just because I have a pea brain and I was a little bit too lost
- 44:07last few episodes. But I'm positive that if I
- 44:10rewatch the show I would appreciate it even more.
- 44:14That happened to me with season 2 because I rewatched season 2
- 44:18and I rated it like a nine when I first watched it.
- 44:22I still loved it, but it was it all.
- 44:25It was really confusing when I first watched it 'cause I was
- 44:28watching it as an aired. So I think it helped that I like
- 44:31was binging it this time. So I raised it to a 9.5 'cause I
- 44:35could appreciate the drama more. But got you.
- 44:39Yeah, I completely understand why this would be confusing.
- 44:43It is one of those dramas you have to really pay attention.
- 44:46You have to like, you cannot. Just.
- 44:50Put it in the background and expect to.
- 44:52Get it? You have to pay attention.
- 44:53You can't look at your phone like you can't do any.
- 44:56It's one of those. Even season 2 is the same way
- 44:58like you cannot. It's not one of those where
- 45:02you're half assed watching it. You have to watch it to
- 45:04understand what's going on. For sure, for sure.
- 45:07OK, so those are our ratings. We're going to get into spoilers
- 45:10right after this as much as I can.
- 45:11Again, I don't have a very good memory and I was very confused
- 45:16for a little bit of the show, so we'll see.
- 45:18And I have no notes, so we'll see how much I can contribute to
- 45:22the spoiler section. But yeah, we're going to do
- 45:25spoilers right after this. Excuse me, I can't tell.
- 45:30I can't tell you know. I am noting.
- 45:35Oh sorry, swear this crossing shells.
- 45:38What? All right, we're on the other
- 45:43side of spoilers. So if you don't care about
- 45:47spoilers, keep listening. But if you want to preserve your
- 45:50first time watch of stranger season one, then stop watching,
- 45:55stop listening and come back later.
- 45:57Keep listening after you've watched the show.
- 45:59So I don't know where you want to start Caitlyn or what you
- 46:04want to say, but like, I, I thought that the Oh my God, I
- 46:13don't have, I don't, I don't even have nicknames written down
- 46:15for these people. So Yu Jian Myong plays Ichang
- 46:20Jun, who is like the chief prosecutor.
- 46:22And then he gets promoted to the Blue House.
- 46:25He quits the prosecution service and then he gets not promoted,
- 46:33but like affirmed into the Blue House or whatever, Right, Right.
- 46:40And he has the crazy wife and the the table father-in-law,
- 46:49right. So this guy, I always thought he
- 46:52was sketchy. I was like he's for sure in on
- 46:55it. Like he he has to be the
- 46:58murderer of Mr. Park because Mr. Park is the dead body.
- 47:03Mr. Body. We'll call him Mr. Body because
- 47:07he's the first body that we see. He's the the murder that kind of
- 47:13colors the whole show. He's the.
- 47:15One found in the house. He's the one found in the house,
- 47:18he's the one that was stabbed to death in his own house.
- 47:21But this guy wasn't a savory character at all.
- 47:24He was bribing almost the entire prosecution service and
- 47:30providing them with women, underage girls of money
- 47:37services, what you name it. He was like procuring it for
- 47:40them, for his own gains as well as other people's gains.
- 47:44He was like a broker. Yeah, because he was using all
- 47:47of that as leverage in terms of blackmail when it if he needed
- 47:52to, if he had, he had all this information against basically
- 47:56anybody in leadership on both, like just not even the
- 47:59prosecution. Like the IT was like cops, it
- 48:02was CEO, it was, it was everybody, everybody who was
- 48:05anybody. He had everyone's dirty laundry.
- 48:08Yeah, yeah. So it was just a matter of time
- 48:12before he, I mean, he had a target on his back because.
- 48:15Absolutely. And he knew it, that's why.
- 48:16And he knew it. House.
- 48:17Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 48:20So Mr. Body dies and Ichangjun, the chief prosecutor, I'm just
- 48:25going to call him the chief prosecutor, even though like
- 48:27another chief prosecutor comes in.
- 48:29It's very confusing. But anyway, chief Prosecutor
- 48:32Changdun, he's sketchy because you think that he was like
- 48:38sleeping with an underage girl. They had like video footage of
- 48:41her going into his hotel room at like this conference, conference
- 48:48that they went to and stuff like that.
- 48:50And he didn't sleep with her. He like swore up and down and
- 48:53like he didn't sleep with her. And he was just, he hated she
- 48:58Monk. Like you could tell that there
- 48:59was animosity between him and well, not she Monk didn't give a
- 49:05shit. But like he hated she Monk
- 49:07didn't like that he was so righteous that he was so
- 49:12proactive against like all this corruption and fine.
- 49:17Well, I think he also didn't like the fact that he didn't bow
- 49:24down to him. Like, he, he, he because Shima
- 49:27didn't understand that this dude was your boss.
- 49:32Like, you needed to bow to him. You needed to shake his hand.
- 49:35Yeah, he didn't like that. He didn't like the fact that
- 49:38there was this guy who unintentionally, like, he viewed
- 49:42it as intentional. He did not think like the, the
- 49:46chief prosecutor didn't think like 'cause at the time when
- 49:49this was going on, the chief prosecutor didn't know what
- 49:51actually was happening with Shamuk and his head, but like he
- 49:56thought it was intentional. He thought Shamuk was doing it
- 49:58in terms of like to undermine him.
- 50:02So he didn't like that either. Like he on one hand, he didn't
- 50:04like the fact he was like digging up all this dirt and.
- 50:07Like he was good at his. Corruption but also didn't like
- 50:10the fact he didn't bow to him and view him as his boss.
- 50:14Yeah, yeah. Didn't show him proper.
- 50:16But then at the end you find out he kind of did at the same time,
- 50:20like he did respect him at the same time.
- 50:23It was interesting. I almost don't know if they did
- 50:26it. I don't know because what threw
- 50:31me off the scent was this like holier than thou speech that he
- 50:36gave in. Like, I don't, I don't think it
- 50:40was midway through the show, maybe like 1/4 of the way
- 50:43through the show, he comes to like Shemukh and he says like, I
- 50:49basically, I believe in justice. I believe in the prosecution
- 50:52service. I didn't do this thing that you
- 50:55accused me of. And basically, again, I'm
- 50:57paraphrasing because I don't got the quote in front of me at all.
- 51:01He was like, I don't, you know, I believe in, in the process,
- 51:10the process, the justice system and stuff like that.
- 51:13And he did. And his acting was so good
- 51:16because I believed him. I was like, I think maybe he's
- 51:21telling the truth that he, he, this is his religion.
- 51:26You know what I'm saying? That he.
- 51:28Well, I think The thing is is. Actually righteous.
- 51:31I think that's like that, that what was great about the speech,
- 51:34Is it it that's what he thought. He trusted the process and he
- 51:38trusted the system, but he then got married to Hanjo's heiress
- 51:44and that's when it went downhill.
- 51:46Like that's the problem is like he did he he, he was Shemukh
- 51:53before he got married and before he got entangled in Hanjo.
- 51:57And then he at the end, he was like, I am aware, I'm fully
- 52:04aware that I am not the person I was before I married this
- 52:08person. While I love her, I have done
- 52:11very sketchy things and I will own up to it, quote UN quote
- 52:18Shimuk. And Shimuk is the only person I
- 52:21can trust because I'm well aware that he is never going to take a
- 52:27bribe. He's never going to be corrupt,
- 52:29he's never going to do all that. So he literally is the only
- 52:32person I can trust with all this information and whatever.
- 52:36So I respect him. Like the The thing is, is like
- 52:39he realized I might hate the guy because he never like it might
- 52:45rub my mind. Yeah, it.
- 52:47But I have to respect him. I have to respect his his.
- 52:51I got to respect the game. Yeah, I have.
- 52:54Yeah, his yeah. So I mean it it, it was a very
- 52:57interesting dynamic with this character because he he was
- 53:01Shimuk before he married Hanjo and then Hanjo got.
- 53:04Corrupted. Along with like everybody else,
- 53:07got corrupted by. It wasn't just a corruption of
- 53:13like deeds, it was like a corruption of his soul.
- 53:18Almost like he felt like he betrayed his own values and his
- 53:23moral, his own sense of morality by marrying this person that he
- 53:28loves who has a the devil as a father.
- 53:33Like, yeah, yeah, yeah. And that and that was his
- 53:40downfall. Like he he was ended up being
- 53:44the devil's advocate. Yeah, and then you, I always
- 53:47love the scene when they're in the courtroom where he's like,
- 53:50you're never going to see me on trial.
- 53:52Because like, you'll never see me.
- 53:54You'll never prosecute me. Because like, I never predicted
- 53:58his ending. I thought he would like, go on
- 54:00trial. And then I was like, oh, he was
- 54:03like, that was foreshadowing he. Literally was like, you will
- 54:06never catch me alive. Right?
- 54:09Exactly. And we both thought we're going
- 54:12to see him alive at the end of the show.
- 54:17Psych No, he ends up killing himself, which I despite the
- 54:24fact that this was always foreshadowed, I and and the I
- 54:29don't like when they do this. Like I I'm going to precipice
- 54:32this whole thing by saying I don't like when they do this in
- 54:34general in K dramas. Is that the person who has done
- 54:37the most wrong, who is at fault for everything?
- 54:41Hold on, hold on, let me finish. Hold on, hold on, let me finish.
- 54:44So the person who is at fault like the the murderer, the
- 54:48rapist or whatever, they end up killing themselves to escape
- 54:54consequences, punishment, what have you.
- 54:58I hate when that happens because then and then the show like
- 55:01moves the fuck on like quickly They're like, OK, I guess that's
- 55:04done. Can't prosecute a dead person.
- 55:07In this case, they did it the best way possible because this
- 55:12person was going through internal turmoil for the better
- 55:18part of 20 years and he was like, his letter to his wife was
- 55:24wild, was like unhinged. She was like Korea's on the
- 55:28brink of societal collapse, blah blah blah blah.
- 55:31Nothing sacred. Well, it was like crazy and I
- 55:36was like, Oh my God, there's no he for years wanted to kill
- 55:40himself because he felt so trapped.
- 55:45Trapped. That's a great word.
- 55:47He felt so trapped because he loved his wife.
- 55:50He never cheated on her and loved his daughter and, and
- 55:54like, but at the same time, look at everything that his
- 56:00father-in-law made him do, made him say yes to.
- 56:04And you can't like choose in Korean society especially.
- 56:10I feel like that's cutting off your father-in-law.
- 56:16Right. And especially in his situation,
- 56:18like in his. Situation.
- 56:19He wasn't rich when he married the.
- 56:21Family. Like it was very apparent he
- 56:24came from a poor upbringing. He was like lucky to be married
- 56:28to her in terms of society terms.
- 56:31Like he could not say no to his. He married.
- 56:35Could not. Yeah, he married.
- 56:36To everyone else's eyes, he married up.
- 56:38Yeah, and his father-in-law knew and exploited that.
- 56:42Yeah. Yeah, it was foul.
- 56:44And there was no escape like his daughter was studying abroad,
- 56:51like this would never happen if he was like, we can't be aligned
- 56:56with your chaebol family. Like we have to go it alone.
- 57:01Right. Yeah.
- 57:04So it was, it was undeniable that he would kill himself to
- 57:11escape. Yeah.
- 57:13And make. Himself the scapegoat yeah, but
- 57:17at the same time like he revealed everything and revealed
- 57:21like he he can't he went out as a morally Gray character in my
- 57:26opinion because. Because whether he did what he
- 57:29did, yeah. He did, still at.
- 57:31The end of the show, you're like, what did he?
- 57:33Think yeah, but the one thing you.
- 57:35Know he did. Was a whistleblower at the.
- 57:38Same. Yeah, he was a exactly He was a
- 57:40whistleblower, but you don't know exactly what he did.
- 57:42The only thing you know for sure is that he instigated Looney
- 57:48from Prison Playbook or Seven O. We'll call him Seven O because
- 57:52of the tattoo. Yeah.
- 57:54He instigated 7 O to kill. Mr. Body Yeah, yeah.
- 58:02And like, orchestrated that whole thing for him.
- 58:05Right. Which means he is a murderer.
- 58:08Like I said, maybe that's it. Like that.
- 58:12Is that the worst thing that he did?
- 58:13Like on paper, I don't know. They showed him like winning and
- 58:17dining with people in a one of those bars, not bars, sushi host
- 58:22clubs, sushi restaurants or something.
- 58:26And he obviously maintained that he never cheated on his wife, so
- 58:30it's not like he was taking sexual favors.
- 58:32Right. But like, what else did he do?
- 58:35Like he, I think it was all paper.
- 58:37I think he was all doing stuff on paper.
- 58:39Yeah, it was all about like money.
- 58:41Yeah, it was all about. Laundering.
- 58:43Money it was. It was all had to do with that,
- 58:48that town or city that they were like building.
- 58:51Yeah. And he was basically funneling
- 58:54money through it. He was basically laundering
- 58:56money like he was laundering money through it.
- 58:59And then also all of these people, because he was so high
- 59:03up, he got some people off the hook in terms of crimes and in
- 59:08terms of that too, so. Like which to me?
- 59:11Helped people. Through the system.
- 59:13It wouldn't be so bad if he was a defense attorney, right?
- 59:17Unless he was doing something illegal, like, you know,
- 59:21altering evidence and like, you know what I'm saying.
- 59:23Like, well, that's what the law. And that's I think was part of
- 59:26it. Plus he was on the wrong side.
- 59:28Plus he was on the prosecution service side.
- 59:31So is just bad. But again, they don't go into
- 59:37detail about what he did so wrong.
- 59:40But anyway, he kills himself and I think it was done the best
- 59:44way. This is terrible to say like
- 59:46that. The suicide was done in the most
- 59:48tasteful way. I think it was presented in the
- 59:52most tasteful way. Right.
- 59:55Yeah. Yeah, but it you were, you were
- 59:59taken aback. Well, I at the first time I'd
- 1:00:06ever watch this, I just didn't predict it even though they
- 1:00:09foreshadowed it. Like so I I it made sense for
- 1:00:14the character after it happened. Like I totally agreed why they
- 1:00:18went direction they did with his character.
- 1:00:20But just the first time watching it, I never predicted that he
- 1:00:24would be like I knew very early on he was a bad guy, like he was
- 1:00:30one of the people involved, but like I just didn't A, didn't
- 1:00:33predict he was the lesser of evils compared to other people.
- 1:00:37And B, like while it made sense in hindsight, like I never
- 1:00:42predicted that he would just go and kill himself.
- 1:00:46But because the, the surroundings of why he killed
- 1:00:49himself and like how he did it and what came afterwards made
- 1:00:53sense in hindsight. But I just, it was a, it's a
- 1:00:56terms of just like I didn't predict it happening.
- 1:00:59I think he was also, so he found himself so reprehensible and the
- 1:01:06fact that he could have been on trial in the very courtroom that
- 1:01:11he so respected, it would have broken him.
- 1:01:19And it would have been so embarrassing for him to have led
- 1:01:22the prosecution service as a chief prosecutor.
- 1:01:25And then it comes out, all this shit comes out and then he's on
- 1:01:29trial. I think it would have it.
- 1:01:30It would have ruined him internally and his whole life.
- 1:01:35It would have imploded his whole life, so he knew like it just it
- 1:01:39couldn't go down like that. Right.
- 1:01:41Yeah. And I think another thing that
- 1:01:44he did, it is like he revealed all this dirt that he had
- 1:01:48recorded, the whistle blowing stuff and whistle blow.
- 1:01:51He knew if he didn't kill himself, somebody would.
- 1:01:54Oh, yeah. Like it would it?
- 1:01:55He would never have surprised Sur Sur survived.
- 1:01:58And it would have been his father-in-law.
- 1:02:00Yeah, it would have been something his father-in-law did
- 1:02:02and he never would have survived it.
- 1:02:04So he was like, I'd rather go out in my own way and do my own
- 1:02:10thing. Have the agency.
- 1:02:12Over it versus knowing I'll be killed two months from now yeah,
- 1:02:16it yeah, is is. And that way he got all the
- 1:02:20information out too, like he didn't have, he didn't have to
- 1:02:26be the Mr. Body with all this leverage because he like it was
- 1:02:31all out and everybody, everybody's dirt was there and.
- 1:02:35Yeah, all the recordings and the paperwork and everything.
- 1:02:38So his wife, I want to touch briefly on his wife because I
- 1:02:41saw her. I was like, where is she from?
- 1:02:43Where's she from? I haven't watched Sky Castle
- 1:02:45yet. That is later in Season 5.
- 1:02:49Nice, nice. Just I have not.
- 1:02:51I have not watched that either. Oh OK, well anyway, first time
- 1:02:55for everybody. So his wife, I watched her in
- 1:02:58Snowdrop and when I realized that I had watched her in
- 1:03:00Snowdrop, I had like a full body chills.
- 1:03:04So the the wife, I found her so cool because you couldn't tell
- 1:03:12if she was good or bad. You couldn't tell if she was out
- 1:03:16here trying to kill mistresses or if she was just suspicious of
- 1:03:24the people that could be his mistress.
- 1:03:27You know what I'm saying? Right, right.
- 1:03:30So it turns out that she wasn't killing mistresses.
- 1:03:34She was. She was just going to lay eyes
- 1:03:37on them. Yeah, she was just curious.
- 1:03:40She was just curious. Yeah, she has a bigger role in.
- 1:03:43Season 2, yeah, I saw. I saw that she was like a top
- 1:03:46building in Season 2. I was like, oh, cool.
- 1:03:49So she also, I was like, we need to talk more about the
- 1:03:54conversation that the wife has with BAE Doona at that awkward
- 1:03:58dinner. Yep.
- 1:04:00That she tries to host with the investigation crew because I was
- 1:04:06like, what is this? This is like I could write a
- 1:04:08thesis on this. Because the dynamic they were,
- 1:04:15it was like 2 lionesses in a room together and everyone else
- 1:04:19was just, they were like zebras. Like they had no, you know, they
- 1:04:24had no say. They didn't matter because
- 1:04:29Beduna, like she is. So I don't know how to describe
- 1:04:33this conversation because I don't have the conversation in
- 1:04:35front of me. But you know which one I'm
- 1:04:37talking about, right? Yeah.
- 1:04:38Oh, yeah. Like the one where the wife was
- 1:04:39like, oh, it's so weird to see a female cop.
- 1:04:46Like, it starts like that. And Beduna's like, yeah, like
- 1:04:51I'm a female cop, Like, what of it?
- 1:04:54And it turns into like this housewife versus working woman
- 1:04:58thing. It was a feminism versus
- 1:05:02traditional, Yeah, feminism versus trad wife thing and
- 1:05:06classism thing all together. Right.
- 1:05:12I think it would. I think in one way it was just
- 1:05:17due to the upbringing that the wife had and the fact that her
- 1:05:21father probably catered to her every need.
- 1:05:24She somehow thought that she could host this dinner with the
- 1:05:30team and either get information somehow from them or manipulate
- 1:05:37them into not pursuing the case or whatever.
- 1:05:43And then the fact that Schumach and Beduna like do not accept
- 1:05:47bribe like nobody in that room did.
- 1:05:49But like, it was, it was like it, it became very apparent very
- 1:05:53quickly that she was not going to get her way and she couldn't.
- 1:05:58She needed to keep up this facade of a perfect housewife
- 1:06:02while hosting this, even though you could tell she was like
- 1:06:05fuming inside. So it, it, I think that that's
- 1:06:11how I interpreted that scene where like she was trying to
- 1:06:13either get information or basically tell them to knock it
- 1:06:16off and leave this alone. And then real.
- 1:06:20I quickly realized that was not going to happen and it's all of
- 1:06:25this. And I think the and I.
- 1:06:27Think the other thing is because she went she literally was
- 1:06:30talking directly to Beduna because she was the only other
- 1:06:33female in the room so she felt I think she could.
- 1:06:36She thought she would get something out of her.
- 1:06:38Like she thought she could manipulate the only female.
- 1:06:42Right. That they would have some sort
- 1:06:43of camaraderie or like, girl, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:06:47Like they would connect. Yeah.
- 1:06:50It didn't happen. It was like oil and water.
- 1:06:52Yeah. And the way that her fate, the
- 1:06:55wife, the her face changes when I can't even remember what
- 1:07:00Beiduna said, but like her face like changes and falls and she
- 1:07:05looks like she's about to kill Beiduna.
- 1:07:07She like made a joke, like Beiduna made a joke.
- 1:07:11It's some she said something and Beiduna being Beiduna like her
- 1:07:15character just was like and it wasn't even her character was
- 1:07:18trying to get back at her. She just, like, made a joke
- 1:07:20trying to, I think kind of like trying to like, like cut the
- 1:07:25tense, like the tension in the room because everybody could
- 1:07:28tell there was it. So she, like, made a joke trying
- 1:07:31to, like, cut the tension. And then the wife didn't like it
- 1:07:37because it obviously made her look bad with an.
- 1:07:41It was insulting. Yeah.
- 1:07:43It was insulting, Yeah. Oh my God, I loved it.
- 1:07:47Yeah, I was eating up that messy trauma.
- 1:07:51This is so tense. Like they nobody wanted to be
- 1:07:54there, but they can't say no because it's the chief
- 1:07:55prosecutor's wife that, you know, it's all of this politics,
- 1:07:59right? Like these relationship politics
- 1:08:03that are happening? Right.
- 1:08:05And I think the prosecutor also invited them over because he
- 1:08:08thought he could do the same thing, like get information and
- 1:08:13either tell them to knock it off.
- 1:08:15And obviously that also didn't happen, so.
- 1:08:19So let's move forward and talk about the weasel, which is Ijun
- 1:08:24Hyuk. His character's name is Dong
- 1:08:26Jay. Like that guy.
- 1:08:28Like fuck that guy bro, like. He he's getting like a spin off.
- 1:08:33So is he really? Yeah.
- 1:08:35That's the that's the that's the show that's coming out this
- 1:08:37year. He's.
- 1:08:38Getting Oh my God. And no one really know if it's a
- 1:08:41prequel or a sequel or something.
- 1:08:43I'm assuming it's like a like a spin off spin off.
- 1:08:46But yeah, that's it's literally going to be his story.
- 1:08:53Oh my God, this guy's the worst. The worst.
- 1:08:58He is super easily. No, he choked out home girl
- 1:09:05Unsu. Like when he choked her almost
- 1:09:08to the point of death. I was like, yeah, you're done.
- 1:09:12We can't refer you anymore. You almost killed a woman in an
- 1:09:17alley over actually nothing at all.
- 1:09:20She just said, I'm not going to let you get away with something
- 1:09:24like she just goaded him in the street, which she was stupid for
- 1:09:27that. But no sense at all.
- 1:09:31That man, he had no sense. And he was, he was fully, fully
- 1:09:39taking bribes, taking everything.
- 1:09:42They had all of this evidence on him.
- 1:09:44And then he was like, why don't you just let me go and I'll help
- 1:09:47you out? And then he becomes like this
- 1:09:48quasi ally for the last half of the show.
- 1:09:52Yep. Yep, I cannot believe they let
- 1:09:56him back onto the prosecution. I mean, they couldn't really,
- 1:09:58they didn't really have anything on him specifically.
- 1:10:01He was a small fish. Like they they used him
- 1:10:05basically and he knew he he was going to be used so he took that
- 1:10:08to his advantage. Like they had bigger fish to
- 1:10:12fry. But him tampering with evidence
- 1:10:14with the phone? Yeah, of course.
- 1:10:17I mean, I'm not saying like he's a great character.
- 1:10:19He's a very great character. Like he, he's not a good guy,
- 1:10:23but they they were like there's bigger fish to fry.
- 1:10:26We need him to get evidence of other people.
- 1:10:28We need him to do this. Like he and he, that's the also
- 1:10:32his character though, like he's not loyal to anybody.
- 1:10:36Like the minute either people are going after him or he is
- 1:10:40going to get fried, he switches sides and that's his character.
- 1:10:45That's his characters through and through, especially in
- 1:10:49season one. The.
- 1:10:53But that's the fun of his. Character I hate it.
- 1:10:55He's he is fun. He is fun but also a so
- 1:10:58annoying. Yeah, so annoying.
- 1:11:01Yeah, he's he's a lovable, annoying character.
- 1:11:04I love him. He's so good.
- 1:11:06Because you think he might have murdered someone like earlier on
- 1:11:11the show, you think he might have murdered the girl, the
- 1:11:14hooker. And then you're like, maybe not.
- 1:11:18And then you're like, well, maybe he did.
- 1:11:19Like you're flip flopping back and forth like then you find out
- 1:11:23maybe he didn't murder her but why the fuck does he have his
- 1:11:26her phone? Right.
- 1:11:28And it's like this whole back and forth and this goes for
- 1:11:31every single sketchy character in the show.
- 1:11:33Like you're unsure of every single person besides the lead 2
- 1:11:37characters. This is the, this is how it goes
- 1:11:41for the whole show. You're like.
- 1:11:42Well, even though we even there was a time where you were like
- 1:11:44Ishimuk actually a good guy though like that's the beauty of
- 1:11:48this show too. Like because he is so reserved
- 1:11:53and so closed off you for a couple episodes even him is
- 1:11:57looking a little sketchy until everything is revealed.
- 1:12:01Craziness Don Jay is. Craziness.
- 1:12:03So good. Don Jay.
- 1:12:05So when he choked out Unsu, that's when I was like, you're
- 1:12:09done, you're done. And then he was like, Oh my God,
- 1:12:13is she alive? Is she alive?
- 1:12:14Oh, thank God she's alive. I'm like fuck out of here, bro.
- 1:12:16Like you suck. What a punk.
- 1:12:20OK, then Unsu, who's played by Sheena son.
- 1:12:24I found her so annoying as well because she just didn't have
- 1:12:30like street smarts. She didn't.
- 1:12:32Yeah, yeah, yeah. Didn't I see?
- 1:12:36Smarts. Yeah, I also found her quite
- 1:12:38annoying in in the first watch like.
- 1:12:40And she was just like banging her head against the wall and
- 1:12:43not really realizing, oh, I have a concussion, right?
- 1:12:49Or she was like. Yeah, and then like she would
- 1:12:51run off and like, follow people without telling anybody.
- 1:12:54Just so reckless. You knew it was coming.
- 1:12:57You knew it was coming with her. Yeah.
- 1:12:59So when they were like, it was a possibility.
- 1:13:01At the end of the show, we get a second body.
- 1:13:03Finally, we have a second body. Yeah.
- 1:13:06And it's in the hooker's house, so it's either the hooker who
- 1:13:10went missing at the hospital or it's someone else.
- 1:13:13And when they're not saying who it is, I'm like, it's in Sue,
- 1:13:18it's unsu. It's got to be unsu.
- 1:13:20And lo and behold, they like uncover the the blanket that
- 1:13:24they have they put on her and 1st there she is, she's dead.
- 1:13:28Yeah, yeah. Just Bluetooth close to the sun
- 1:13:32there. Just not that she deserved it.
- 1:13:36I'm saying like she. Well, I mean, like I think you,
- 1:13:42you knew. You knew the minute you saw the
- 1:13:44zero. She saw the 07.
- 1:13:45She was daughter. Marked her death.
- 1:13:49You knew. She saw the text like how did
- 1:13:53you? How did you feel about that
- 1:13:54reveal? Oh, that was the worst one to
- 1:13:57me. That was the.
- 1:13:59That was the one that I sent you, I think.
- 1:14:00I I was waiting for that. Voice memo I was like screaming
- 1:14:04in the voice memo because the the end of the episode like that
- 1:14:09that he so this is we're talking about say 17-O looney from
- 1:14:15prison playbook EQ hyung, that guy seven O he you thought he
- 1:14:22was an ally. You thought he was just kind of
- 1:14:24like a straight laced internal affairs dude that got taken on
- 1:14:30great chemistry with everybody on the on the show, on the
- 1:14:33investigation team and a really good investigator and he was
- 1:14:38very supportive, very helpful. Girl, when that juice or
- 1:14:44whatever fell on his shirt and it turns see through and you
- 1:14:47could see the tattoo, I was like, Oh my God, is that a 70?
- 1:14:50Is that A70 on this man's body? And sure enough, it looks like
- 1:14:55it's not a 70, but it looks like A70.
- 1:14:57Yeah, I start hyperventilating. I was like, Oh my gosh, Is he
- 1:15:03the killer? Has he been the killer the whole
- 1:15:06time? Right.
- 1:15:08The whole the whole time. Yep.
- 1:15:11The whole time he's right there it embedded.
- 1:15:15Embedded, so there was no rebounding from the.
- 1:15:20I couldn't handle it. That was.
- 1:15:26Well, then you got that wonderful scene in the airport,
- 1:15:29which that was the scene when I that was the that was like, I
- 1:15:32need to put this scene on my social media, but I can't do it
- 1:15:35yet because she had an. Airport scene is amazing.
- 1:15:40It is astonishing. Like him.
- 1:15:42Like yeah, over Beiduna. One of my favorite scenes in
- 1:15:46season one. It is such it should go down as
- 1:15:49like in the in the pantheon of chase scenes in K drone like
- 1:15:53that is a really good chase scene and he's plowing through
- 1:15:59police officers like nothing. Right.
- 1:16:03Yeah. Like they're made of cardboard.
- 1:16:08Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:16:09Like he's truly gifted. That man is true.
- 1:16:11That's truly gifted criminal. So I enjoyed the heck out of
- 1:16:16that reveal. I was super entertained.
- 1:16:20And yeah, it spirals out of control because then after they
- 1:16:23figure out he's the killer. Is he the killer of Mr. Body
- 1:16:27alone? Is he the killer of also Unsu?
- 1:16:32Did he attempt to kill the hooker as well?
- 1:16:36Like what to? What's the?
- 1:16:38Extent of this, right, Yeah. Yeah, so it's it's crazy.
- 1:16:45It kind of goes pretty fast from there.
- 1:16:48Once they catch him, it goes pretty fast from there.
- 1:16:50At the end of the show right now, my only guess, and I'll
- 1:16:54tell you this was straight wrong, was that Kyung Wan, who
- 1:16:58is Mr. Body's son? I thought he was the killer.
- 1:17:02I thought that he killed his dad and that didn't happen at all.
- 1:17:10I especially thought he was suspicious because he was
- 1:17:14running from police and shit and he was deleting photos of the
- 1:17:17hooker from his phone. Right, right, because he had a
- 1:17:23crush on her in high school. And then his dad, like, hired
- 1:17:27her to be this underage hooker. It was nuts.
- 1:17:31It was nuts. Oh my God, Bedlam.
- 1:17:36So he had motive for killing his dad and then he ended up not
- 1:17:41right not killing his dad. Yeah, but this came up recently
- 1:17:47and I can't remember. Oh reset when we did our drama
- 1:17:49trio reset review and we were spoilers for reset spoilers for
- 1:17:54reset that see drama the. I'm going to try and make this
- 1:17:59as non spoiler as possible, but at the end of that show we
- 1:18:01figure out who is the assailant. Right.
- 1:18:07The bomber on the bus and we were like, look, it, it kind of
- 1:18:15gives because of the reason for why they were doing that.
- 1:18:20It kind of gave them a license. Anybody who was in that same
- 1:18:25situation, a license to kill, right?
- 1:18:29Because because of that crazy sad back story and the situation
- 1:18:34that they were in and in this very similar case for say 170,
- 1:18:42he lost his son in this fiery bus crash.
- 1:18:47And it was very, it was completely heartbreaking to hear
- 1:18:52the story coming from him when he was being interrogated by
- 1:18:54Shiwan and he was saying, like, I looked into the situation and
- 1:19:00it was, you know, basically a big corruption case, big cover
- 1:19:03up. And my son died for nothing.
- 1:19:06Like unnecessarily like it was, it was not an accident.
- 1:19:09It was, it was negligence. Yes, yes.
- 1:19:14And what Baiduna's character ended up saying to him was that
- 1:19:22anybody who's lost a child has a can do what you did then, like
- 1:19:29they have a license to anybody. There's so many people who have
- 1:19:33gone through terrible, wrongful situations and does that mean
- 1:19:38they can start killing people? Right.
- 1:19:42And the answer is overwhelmingly, profoundly no,
- 1:19:46No, yes. It's no like this.
- 1:19:50This level of vigilante justice, like, where does it end?
- 1:19:52It's a slippery slope. Exactly.
- 1:19:54Yeah, so that's what she was. Saying in his, in his case, it
- 1:19:59wasn't one person too. It's like, Oh yeah, it's not
- 1:20:02like, yeah, it's not like he just like went and killed the
- 1:20:06driver. He like killed the people who
- 1:20:09didn't fix the bus. He killed the person who hid the
- 1:20:16the people who didn't fix the bus.
- 1:20:18Like it was like a whole thing. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:20:22So I found that really important.
- 1:20:26Like that? She said That, yeah.
- 1:20:28Yeah, yeah. I don't.
- 1:20:32I was going to say I don't have anything in my notes.
- 1:20:34Look, I have no notes but. So what did you think in terms
- 1:20:38of like, what did you think of BAE Doona and Shimuk's, like,
- 1:20:44first encounter together? Because they had, well, they
- 1:20:48technically two encounters. I'll say one is like when
- 1:20:51they're chasing after the suspect and like, they both meet
- 1:20:55each other and they both are like, what the hell are you
- 1:20:57doing? Like you're a prosecutor.
- 1:20:59I'm a cop. Like, we're chasing the same
- 1:21:00guy. What the heck?
- 1:21:02And like they go through all the alleys and everything.
- 1:21:04And then Beduna like, is up on that second floor, whatever.
- 1:21:08The guy like, jumps down and then she looks there.
- 1:21:11So like, what did you think of that meeting?
- 1:21:13And then the other meeting was like, when they're in the guy's
- 1:21:16house, like the, the, the Mr. Body's house and she comes
- 1:21:20around the corner and she looks like this there was a night like
- 1:21:25in his own world, like trying to figure out scenarios of how this
- 1:21:28dude could get killed. Like what did you think of
- 1:21:31those? Two scenes I like the meet cue
- 1:21:35of them chasing the same suspect and then he takes the suspect
- 1:21:41and like, leaves her high and dry and all of her colleagues
- 1:21:44are like, why the hell did you let the prosecutor take the
- 1:21:46perp? Like, that is bizarre.
- 1:21:48You, Jim, you both chased him. And then, yeah, that moment that
- 1:21:53she sees him like whipping around this kitchen knife, this
- 1:22:01giant kitchen knife, trying to recreate the scene and figure
- 1:22:06out what what possibly happened in the amount of time that the
- 1:22:13that the perp had to do it to make to do the murder is.
- 1:22:19I thought that was hysterical. And I know it's not meant to be
- 1:22:22hysterical. You're supposed to be surprised.
- 1:22:24You're supposed to be like, oh, no, she's seeing him like figure
- 1:22:27it out. And there's no context for her.
- 1:22:30And he's not going to explain anything because he doesn't give
- 1:22:32a shit and he doesn't realize that he looks like a lunatic
- 1:22:36and. And that like speaks to his
- 1:22:39character in general. Like he does that a lot in like
- 1:22:42where it's like he imagines himself.
- 1:22:44Like this is a trope in crime dramas.
- 1:22:46You have these characters that kind of imagine himself as the
- 1:22:49criminal. He does that a lot in in both
- 1:22:52seasons. So it's like you ran like just
- 1:22:55you imagine him like like just being in a room with him and
- 1:22:59he's just standing there imagining fix the entire time.
- 1:23:05Oh my God. Yeah.
- 1:23:09Also, I enjoyed the red herring of like this.
- 1:23:12What was it? I think it was Ausb drive with
- 1:23:15evidence on it of tax evasion of the chaebol family that the
- 1:23:21ousted. I don't know what what was he
- 1:23:25like because this was unsu. 'S dad Yeah, he was the he was
- 1:23:32the previous chief prosecutor. Was he OK?
- 1:23:35Yeah. So the previous chief
- 1:23:38prosecutor, that old man, he had all this evidence and he was
- 1:23:43hiding it for three years and then Unsu got murdered.
- 1:23:47And they thought it was because she had this evidence on her.
- 1:23:50She like specifically went to get this USB drive and bring it
- 1:23:53to Chimok to help the case and she gets slaughtered.
- 1:24:00I love the red herring that this was kind of like building up and
- 1:24:03we were wondering what's going to happen to this USB drive?
- 1:24:05When is Shima going to get his hands on it?
- 1:24:06He was requesting this evidence for the longest time from the
- 1:24:09from the old man and he wasn't giving it up.
- 1:24:12And then finally she gets murdered and you think, Oh no,
- 1:24:16the bad guys have the evidence. They have this USB drive.
- 1:24:20Finally they got their hands on it and it didn't even matter.
- 1:24:23They were like, get rid of all her shit.
- 1:24:26Like it doesn't even factor in the.
- 1:24:29Overall story, this tax evasion evidence, right, right.
- 1:24:33It's so I thought that was some of the.
- 1:24:35I love that red herring. Well then even with her
- 1:24:38character because you have these scenes throughout where it's
- 1:24:41like like you don't even know if she's a good person.
- 1:24:45Oh yeah, the longest time, like there was that like coffee scene
- 1:24:49where he like goes and like sees like the footage talking to the
- 1:24:53guy, talking to the Mr. Body and she's the one talking to him.
- 1:24:57She was the last person to see him alive.
- 1:24:59So you're like, what the heck? Yeah, you're like, Oh my God.
- 1:25:02Did she have her boyfriend or ex-boyfriend murder him?
- 1:25:05Right. Exactly.
- 1:25:07Yeah, yeah. It was good.
- 1:25:09I liked it. Again, everyone is morally Gray.
- 1:25:13No one is safe from being suspicious.
- 1:25:17And I liked it. I liked it a lot.
- 1:25:20I thought it ended on a on a interesting note.
- 1:25:23You thought he was going to America to tour every single
- 1:25:25state? I was like, that sounds like
- 1:25:26torture. They said he was going to every
- 1:25:30single. What was it like?
- 1:25:34State Department. State.
- 1:25:37Yeah, it was like prosecution department when they said he was
- 1:25:40going to all 50. I was like, Oh my God.
- 1:25:44That's a lot. That's a lot.
- 1:25:47Somebody stop him. Yeah, I just love the fact that
- 1:25:51like going back to like, Shimok and like Beiduna's relationship,
- 1:25:57like. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:25:59I love that she kind of like, once they got over the fact
- 1:26:02that, like love, like the realizing they have to work
- 1:26:05together, she kind of just like pops up in randomly, like, like
- 1:26:11in his office, for example. He'll like walk in and she's
- 1:26:14like sleeping on the chair. Yeah, because she's been
- 1:26:17waiting. For.
- 1:26:18But then he lets her keep. Sleeping exactly.
- 1:26:20Yeah. Like.
- 1:26:21She's tired. It's like those moments where
- 1:26:23it's like, it's just, it's funny how like going back to the
- 1:26:30Sherlock Holmes Watson thing, like it was like he didn't say
- 1:26:36anything. He didn't like request that her
- 1:26:39like to be in his life or anything, but she kind of was
- 1:26:42just like, I'm going to barge in on your life and kind of just be
- 1:26:47there all the time. Yeah.
- 1:26:50And like, what did you think of that whole?
- 1:26:56Well, two things. So there was like the the the
- 1:27:00suit in his head in his house. Like, what did you think of that
- 1:27:05whole scene? Like, like, 'cause like what I
- 1:27:08liked about this is like we, we touched on it was like found
- 1:27:11family. It was like the, it started with
- 1:27:15Beijuna and then it brought into her other cop buddy and then it
- 1:27:20was unsu. And then it was like the
- 1:27:23assistants and then it was 07 and then it was the, the, the
- 1:27:31other guy. What's, what's his other guy
- 1:27:33name? Yeah.
- 1:27:34So it was like a bunch of them, right?
- 1:27:36So like they he gets he. The HR specialist.
- 1:27:40Yeah, he, he walks in on this suit and he calls her very
- 1:27:46deadpan. Is like, Oh yeah, you, you
- 1:27:48should come over here. OK, so the suit that we're the
- 1:27:51suit that we're talking about is that someone illegally entered
- 1:27:55his house while he wasn't there and literally chopped up a a
- 1:28:00suit of his and hung it up by a noose.
- 1:28:05Yeah. And like, and when when the
- 1:28:07lights were off, you thought it was a person like.
- 1:28:10Yeah, like, and then he's burning on the lights and you
- 1:28:12realize it was a suit, but it looked like an hanging body.
- 1:28:16Yeah. So like he calls up Beiduna and
- 1:28:19Beiduna's like. What?
- 1:28:21And like runs over, but not only her, like everybody runs over to
- 1:28:25his. House, it's her.
- 1:28:26It's her and the other cop, the one that gave the evidence to
- 1:28:29the the police chief. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:28:34So also the police chief, kind of like the first watch.
- 1:28:38I was annoyed by the police chief a lot.
- 1:28:40Yeah, he's wrong anyway. Well, not, not, not not that
- 1:28:46police chief, not the one that went on trial.
- 1:28:49The. One, the other one, the boss.
- 1:28:50I know exactly who you're talking about.
- 1:28:51Yeah, he's he never. Yeah, we never got a resolution
- 1:28:55for him. No, no.
- 1:28:57And you don't really. He's in Season 2.
- 1:28:58Like he's a little more in Season 2, but like in Season 2,
- 1:29:02it's the same thing, kind of. We have squinty eyes over here
- 1:29:07'cause we're just like. But I just love the fact like
- 1:29:10there's those moments that you like live for is like they all
- 1:29:14come racing over and you're like, are you OK?
- 1:29:16Are you OK? He's like, I'm fine.
- 1:29:18And then they look at it and they're like, it's much, much
- 1:29:21worse than you said over the phone.
- 1:29:25Yeah, yeah, yeah. I like, are you OK staying here?
- 1:29:27He's like, yeah, I'm totally OK staying here.
- 1:29:29And they're like, Are you sure about that?
- 1:29:31What the hell? Yeah.
- 1:29:35And then the other thing is like, what did you think about
- 1:29:38his whole head situation? I thought this was a convenient
- 1:29:43thing that they kept pushing was every time he was in a stressful
- 1:29:47situation he would get these. It was like tinnitus or
- 1:29:49something and ringing loud ringing in his ears or
- 1:29:54something. Yeah.
- 1:29:57I thought they would bring it up more often and it would come
- 1:29:59into play in situations, high fake situations, but it really
- 1:30:05didn't. It would.
- 1:30:06It came into play like 3-4 times in the whole show and it started
- 1:30:11the show. Because he stops traffic because
- 1:30:13he has one of these episodes and you see him kind of come to and
- 1:30:17he's backed up an entire bridge because he's pulled over, which
- 1:30:23he could have just gone off the bridge entirely, like having one
- 1:30:26of these episodes, but he had the wherewithal to stop and park
- 1:30:30the car in the middle of the street.
- 1:30:33And then he wakes up and just keeps on going towards Mr.
- 1:30:36Body's house, which is when all hell breaks loose.
- 1:30:40I, I don't know, I, I had, I think they could have utilized
- 1:30:45it more, but when it came in, you were like, oh, right.
- 1:30:49He has this recurring thing. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:30:52And that was one of the things I wish they had.
- 1:30:55Like, it was heartbreaking to see eBay Dunas character find
- 1:30:58out, like, what was going on. Yeah, because even I I still
- 1:31:04remember the line where because it was like right after Unsu,
- 1:31:07they found Unsu when he had the big episode.
- 1:31:10And he goes to the he goes to the autopsy.
- 1:31:14Yeah, which they were. Everyone was like, why are you
- 1:31:17serious? You're going to go to the
- 1:31:18autopsy of Unsu. And he was like, yeah, I'm going
- 1:31:22to do it. And right after the autopsy, he
- 1:31:25collapses. Right.
- 1:31:27Yeah. And so like the line that she
- 1:31:29comes in is like he she sees him on the bed and she's like, can
- 1:31:36we stop seeing people in this way?
- 1:31:39Or like, can we like this is too much or something like that?
- 1:31:42Like I I interpreted that as like her saying what Seemukh
- 1:31:50wanted to say like 'cause we have fully know like with with
- 1:31:56his reaction to Unsu like that was like like his.
- 1:31:59Body's reaction. Yeah, so like the whole point of
- 1:32:02the especially like the really bad episode he had was like he
- 1:32:08could not express how guilty and how much regret he had and how
- 1:32:14much like feelings he had towards unsu and the death he he
- 1:32:19saw it as it was his fault like fully and he couldn't express
- 1:32:23that whatsoever. So that in that caused his
- 1:32:29entire episode to him like going like falling down in the hallway
- 1:32:34and everything because that was the culmination of all of these
- 1:32:37emotions being built up for the last 12 hours to 24 hours or
- 1:32:41whatever. But yeah, like her character
- 1:32:45walking in and basically saying what he wanted to say in a way
- 1:32:51and having that feelings of expression that he wanted to do
- 1:32:58and then. I didn't take it that way.
- 1:33:00I thought it was it was sort of her sentiment.
- 1:33:02Well, it. Was for the.
- 1:33:03Whole situation plus things she look like.
- 1:33:06That yeah, it was, but I think, I mean I interpreted it was, I
- 1:33:09mean I interpreted it was her, but also I interpreted it as
- 1:33:12like she was translating him. As well.
- 1:33:16I like that. I like that double meaning.
- 1:33:19And then I also, one of my favorite scenes in the entire
- 1:33:21show is the funeral scene where he explodes.
- 1:33:26Bro. Because thanks for bringing me
- 1:33:28one of the best acting scenes I've ever seen him do.
- 1:33:31Because it's. Just Oh my God.
- 1:33:33You don't expect it. Yeah.
- 1:33:34Start screaming, starts getting really angry.
- 1:33:37You don't expect it. Like, obviously no one expected
- 1:33:40it because he's never done that before.
- 1:33:42But it's just like you, you and like, at that point, the chief
- 1:33:48prosecutor, like the the guy who committed suicide at the end of
- 1:33:52the show, like knows about his condition and knows like what
- 1:33:56led to his condition. So like, you kind of could tell
- 1:34:01he was a little scared in that scene too.
- 1:34:04He like he knew what this. Dude could like did when he did
- 1:34:08get angry before he had the filter of the surgery.
- 1:34:11So if people don't understand, like, so Shumuk's character, the
- 1:34:16reason why he got the surgery to basically got a lumbotomy in a
- 1:34:21way, is because he had some violent outbursts, like really
- 1:34:27violent outbursts when he was a child and in school.
- 1:34:30And they just couldn't do anything to quell those
- 1:34:36emotions. And he couldn't express them
- 1:34:38very well and couldn't. He was just like, yeah, he
- 1:34:42couldn't control them. So they basically gave him a
- 1:34:44lumbotomy. They removed parts of his
- 1:34:47frontal temporal lobe, which is where your personality is.
- 1:34:50Right. It's who you are, and that is
- 1:34:55how he turned into who he is today.
- 1:34:58Yeah. And so there they explained it
- 1:35:01in the show where there are times where because he cannot
- 1:35:06process that anymore, Like, and when he was a child, he was over
- 1:35:10processing stuff and couldn't control them.
- 1:35:12But now it's the other way around where like he still has
- 1:35:15those emotions. They're just very, very, very
- 1:35:18deep within him and his body cannot process those emotions.
- 1:35:22And when he becomes too stressed or has too many emotions of
- 1:35:28these built up and his brain cannot comprehend them and can't
- 1:35:32find a reasonable way to quell them and to make him understand,
- 1:35:37he has these episodes. And so in the funeral scene, I
- 1:35:43think it was a combination of him again feeling regret himself
- 1:35:49and being guilty himself. But also getting really angry
- 1:35:53that like basically everybody who led to her death because he
- 1:35:56fully knows there's somebody in the room that did kill her, kind
- 1:36:01of just like talking business in the funeral.
- 1:36:03Like they were very disrespectful at this funeral.
- 1:36:07And he got angry because no one was saying anything.
- 1:36:10And he finally just was like, are you kidding me?
- 1:36:13So I love that scene. It was one of my favorite.
- 1:36:16Scenes. Well, the father, her dad, the
- 1:36:19OG chief prosecutor started going for the Blue House.
- 1:36:26Chief prosecutor Changjun, who showed up?
- 1:36:28Which bad form to show up when it's so sketchy your involvement
- 1:36:33in this whole thing? They do it all the time though.
- 1:36:35Gripe. Shows.
- 1:36:37They do it all the. Time, I'm sure, yeah.
- 1:36:39And I, yeah. So he shows up to the well.
- 1:36:41Even the father-in-law was there, which I always never was.
- 1:36:45Like, I was like, why? Like there's no reason for the
- 1:36:51father-in-law to be there. Like he didn't know unsu.
- 1:36:53He didn't. Yeah.
- 1:36:55So UNSU's dad goes feral on his ass and it's like you killed my
- 1:37:02daughter how can you be here? And he like takes his cane and
- 1:37:05like tries to hit him and it hits Dongje, which thank God it
- 1:37:08hits Dongje like he needs to be hit.
- 1:37:11And then like fuck that dude. And and that's when because all
- 1:37:17it it it's very I think he got over stimulated also like she
- 1:37:21milk in this situation. And he goes alright.
- 1:37:23Like then he starts screaming at everybody.
- 1:37:26Yeah. And the dad, and he says like,
- 1:37:29why didn't you do anything when you had the chance, right?
- 1:37:33Yeah. And I think did you?
- 1:37:35Did you? Think you were hiding the truth
- 1:37:37for your family? Because look what?
- 1:37:39Look what's happened. Yeah, and that speaks to Shima's
- 1:37:41character because again, we said he's very blunt about anything.
- 1:37:44Like he does no filter whatsoever.
- 1:37:47To blame her father for her death at her funeral, Yeah,
- 1:37:51like. That's yeah, that's just
- 1:37:53something you don't do. And again, I think that scene
- 1:37:56also was him realizing it was also his fault.
- 1:38:01Like he has always, I mean, you'll see this in season 2.
- 1:38:04It's a it's a ongoing thing. He'll bring up unsu in season 2
- 1:38:08as well, where it's like you fully know he regrets what he
- 1:38:12did with this character. Like, and The thing is with this
- 1:38:16character is like she, even though we did find her annoying
- 1:38:19a little bit like she tried to work with him.
- 1:38:22He, she tried to help him out and yeah, and she had her own
- 1:38:27agenda and own motives to do that too.
- 1:38:30But he also was like and. He didn't trust that he didn't.
- 1:38:32Trust she had an agenda and he also was trying to protect her
- 1:38:36at the same time. It wasn't all just like he
- 1:38:39didn't trust her. He also was like, if you get
- 1:38:41involved in this, something's going to happen and I don't want
- 1:38:45you to have that. But on the other hand, in
- 1:38:50hindsight, you kind of see that he thought he should have
- 1:38:54involved her because at least she would have been more safe.
- 1:38:58Like, in hindsight, I think he realized she would have been
- 1:39:01more safe. Yeah.
- 1:39:02She wouldn't have been alone. Exactly.
- 1:39:04So the funeral scene I think was also him kind of yelling at
- 1:39:08himself and realizing that all these people in the room led to
- 1:39:14her death. But he also could not be
- 1:39:18completely absolved of the reason why he was dead.
- 1:39:22It's heavy. It's heavy, yeah.
- 1:39:24And I love that scene. I'm glad you brought it up.
- 1:39:26Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:39:28Well, did you have anything else in your notes?
- 1:39:32Anything at all. So you have a question that in
- 1:39:37here that I I've always loved the OS TS for this drama and
- 1:39:45season 2. Like I I woke up this morning
- 1:39:47because I finished season 2 like two days ago.
- 1:39:49I still have season 2 OST in my head.
- 1:39:53I absolutely love the music of this like not even the OS TS.
- 1:39:59I love the background instrumental of this like
- 1:40:01whenever there's like when there's like something revealed
- 1:40:06or like at the at the. Very the viol.
- 1:40:10Like the violins, like it's like my head, like the drums come.
- 1:40:14In Yeah, I hear it right now. It's good love that I like.
- 1:40:20It's very one of my. Favorite, favorite background
- 1:40:23musics of all time? Yeah, I love it.
- 1:40:27Yeah, it's very good. Great, Great point.
- 1:40:31It's not even OSC, it's just score.
- 1:40:33It's score. Yeah, it's a score.
- 1:40:34It's a memorable score. It's like one of those things
- 1:40:37where it's like the OS TS. I hear it.
- 1:40:39I'll be like, Oh my God. Exactly, exactly and season 2
- 1:40:42kept the same thing like you'll you'll see that it's the same
- 1:40:45like they have different OS TS, but it's the same like score
- 1:40:49played differently, like you know, it's it's the same
- 1:40:55concept, like they have the same like violins and drums and
- 1:40:58everything, but it's differently sounded in a way, but it's
- 1:41:01familiar. OK.
- 1:41:04But yeah, I absolutely love the instrumental backgrounds of
- 1:41:08this. I mean I like the OS TS too, but
- 1:41:09like. Nice.
- 1:41:10Hands on one of my favorite scores in a drama ever.
- 1:41:14I love that. I'll say the last thing that I
- 1:41:18have on my mind is he shows Shemukh, shows the wife, the
- 1:41:24chief prosecutor's widow, the suicide note that he leaves
- 1:41:29behind for her. It's it's with him because he
- 1:41:31left it to for Shima to give to her right.
- 1:41:35And she reads it because she comes in so hot, like guns
- 1:41:38blazing. She goes, I'm going to take you
- 1:41:40down. There's not going to be anything
- 1:41:41left. Like she talks such a big game.
- 1:41:43And then he doesn't say shit to her.
- 1:41:45He just goes and gives her the note.
- 1:41:47He gives her the letter. She reads it and she doesn't say
- 1:41:51anything. She just gets up and leaves.
- 1:41:53Yes check bounce so appropriate she's just like you know what my
- 1:41:59husband had his head on straight as a matter of fact, and you
- 1:42:02know what I think I'm a little bit embarrassed.
- 1:42:05I'm going to leave because there's nothing to there's
- 1:42:08nothing to take down here. This is exactly what he wanted.
- 1:42:13Was this whole. Investigation.
- 1:42:15Well, and the fact is like she realized because I mean, one of
- 1:42:19the reasons why she came in hot is because she fully blamed
- 1:42:21Shivoke for her husband's death. That's what she said, that you
- 1:42:25killed him. And in season 2, she still
- 1:42:28thinks this a little bit, but like, there's things said to her
- 1:42:31in season 2 that kind of writes her even more.
- 1:42:33But like, I think obviously reading that suicide note, she
- 1:42:39knows like, because in the suicide note he's like, Shumuk
- 1:42:42is the only person I trusted, like.
- 1:42:44And I think that also kind of irked her a little because he
- 1:42:49didn't realize. Yeah, he.
- 1:42:51She realized because he. Could have left all that stuff.
- 1:42:54With her exactly. But he didn't.
- 1:42:56Yeah, yeah. Which like says a lot about
- 1:43:00their relationship and his relationship with him and things
- 1:43:05like that, yeah. Yeah, yeah, it's bad.
- 1:43:10It was toxic. It was toxic.
- 1:43:11He might have loved it, but it was toxic.
- 1:43:13Anyway, I think that's it. Like, did you have anything else
- 1:43:17you wanted to say before we get out of here?
- 1:43:19I don't think so. Oh my God, well this was
- 1:43:22wonderful. As you can see, we had a
- 1:43:24fantastic time watching Stranger season one and we will likely,
- 1:43:28very likely be back for Stranger season 2 to talk that through.
- 1:43:33Caitlin's already done the hard work and rewatched season 2.
- 1:43:36I have about 15 1/2 episodes to watch before I'm done, but it'll
- 1:43:43it'll happen. It'll happen this year for sure.
- 1:43:46We would love to hear from you guys.
- 1:43:48If you have watched Stranger and you want to hear more from us,
- 1:43:51talk to me. But obviously talk to Caitlin
- 1:43:52because Caitlin's watched it twice.
- 1:43:54Now three times. Three times.
- 1:43:56Oh my. God 'cause I re I re.
- 1:43:57I rewatched this when season two came out so this was my third
- 1:44:01time rewatching season. 1/3 time rewatching season one.
- 1:44:05So where can we find you online, Caitlin, in case people haven't
- 1:44:09listen to the drama trio episodes or Flower of Evil or
- 1:44:12something in the Rain or all the all the episodes that you're on?
- 1:44:15You can find me on Instagram and Tiktok and Twitter under no
- 1:44:19sleep, the number for dramas. I'm mostly on Instagram and
- 1:44:23Tiktok though, so yeah. Or you can go and listen to my
- 1:44:27podcast or blog like. Exactly.
- 1:44:29Yeah. All right.
- 1:44:32Well, that's been our show. I'm Jessica and this has been
- 1:44:35the Tibba K Rambles podcast. None.
