0:07
[SPEAKER_00]: And as always, this podcast might not be suitable for all ages, especially if you're kids.
0:14
[SPEAKER_00]: If you're ready to proceed, Paulov asks you two things, you sit back.
0:20
[SPEAKER_00]: Smoke a mythy got him, shut that pleasure given multi-hours, and enjoy.
0:27
[SPEAKER_00]: I think that would three things.
0:28
[SPEAKER_00]: Never mind, you get the idea.
0:45
[SPEAKER_00]: The Grimes Sisters murders is a double murder that occurred in Chicago, Illinois.
0:51
[SPEAKER_00]: In December 28th, 1956, in which two sisters, named Barbara, and Patricia Grimes, aged 15 and 12.
1:01
[SPEAKER_00]: disappeared from a Chicago movie theater near the home in McKinley Park, that this appearance initiated one of the largest missing persons investigations in the history of Chicago, and to this very day, the case is one of Chicago's most controversial, three of the country's top corners have been hired to do an autopsy on the girls that they after they'd been found, and even they couldn't decide what had happened to them.
1:30
[SPEAKER_00]: The main sticking point being where the girls raped, or had they had sex on their own accord.
1:35
[SPEAKER_00]: All signs had pointed to the latter, but if so, why were they murdered?
1:40
[SPEAKER_00]: The lead corner in the case, Harry Gloss, believe in Vestigate, is we're hiding the fact that the girls had willingly been having sex, because the Vestigate is wanted to protect the image of the girls.
1:52
[SPEAKER_00]: Nary Gloss was literally fired for a 1950s version of Slotchaming, and to this day, the murder of these young girls brings up more questions than answers, which will be the topic of this podcast.
2:10
[SPEAKER_00]: The art-topsies were performed the day after the girls have been found.
2:15
[SPEAKER_00]: by three experts in their field.
2:17
[SPEAKER_00]: The Walt McGarren was one of those experts, though examine the sisters.
2:22
[SPEAKER_00]: And I guess that's all for what it's worth.
2:25
[SPEAKER_00]: As Walt said, the three of them couldn't agree on a cotton pecking thing.
2:29
[SPEAKER_00]: time of death, cause of death, hack, they couldn't even agree if the sex the girls had was consensual, with wonderful and poor non-recorded, paid any belief the girls had been violated.
2:40
[SPEAKER_00]: And I guess if it weren't a mess, let it go until one got there.
2:43
[SPEAKER_00]: No other family members requested to view the bodies, out to the father made the initial identification down by Devil's Creek, which one can only imagine would be horrific.
2:57
[SPEAKER_00]: But it is interesting to note that the acting sheriff of Cook County, Big Joe Loman, well he showed up three times a few of the girls.
3:05
[SPEAKER_00]: Once, when he was off 30, Jesse Tomkins, the receptionist at the funeral home, noted that he'd been taking a peculiar interest in what she meant by peculiar.
3:15
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, there was never put on record.
3:21
[SPEAKER_00]: Chicago in the 1950s was a hub of industrial and economic growth with a booming manufacturing sector and a diverse population.
3:32
[SPEAKER_00]: And unlike the Chicago of today, it was safe.
3:38
[SPEAKER_00]: But not so safe, the Grimes Sisters.
3:42
[SPEAKER_00]: Barbara and Patricia Grimes were big Elvis Presley fans, and they'd wanted to see his latest flick.
3:49
[SPEAKER_00]: Two of seven children, the mother had some trepidations about letting her two daughters out on a cold Friday night.
3:57
[SPEAKER_00]: But they pleaded and promised to come home right after the film would end it, and she finally agreed.
4:02
[SPEAKER_00]: A classmate of Barbra's was also with the movies with her sister, and they sat behind the Grimes' goals, but left after the first showing.
4:13
[SPEAKER_00]: Barbara, Patricia, was staying behind for the second showing.
4:16
[SPEAKER_00]: The last other girls lining up for popcorn.
4:19
[SPEAKER_00]: What happened next?
4:21
[SPEAKER_00]: Perhaps we'll never know.
4:23
[SPEAKER_00]: The Brighton movie theater was located a mile and a half from where the girls lived.
4:30
[SPEAKER_00]: And no one knows how they got there that night.
4:33
[SPEAKER_00]: Whether they walked, we took a bus.
4:36
[SPEAKER_00]: They'd love to 730 and promised to be home before midnight.
4:40
[SPEAKER_00]: They had $2.50 in that joint possession when they left home.
4:45
[SPEAKER_00]: A classmate said that he'd seen the girls after the movie, leaning into a car in front of the theater, talking to a man.
4:51
[SPEAKER_00]: The guard drove away, and the girls started walking the opposite direction of the home.
4:56
[SPEAKER_00]: Several other witnesses said that they'd seen the sisters in the company of two sailors, when they had returned home at midnight as they promised.
5:04
[SPEAKER_00]: Mrs. Grimes sent out the two oldest siblings to wait for them at the bus stop.
5:09
[SPEAKER_00]: After three buses that arrived without them, should call the police at 2am.
5:14
[SPEAKER_00]: The cops checked out every sweaty, jukebox, joint, and dive in town.
5:20
[SPEAKER_00]: To know of hell, we've seen like the girls had vanished.
5:23
[SPEAKER_00]: With some gossip manga saying, the area that the girls had last been seen in, were for flu season, not respectable types.
5:32
[SPEAKER_00]: The papers were quick to jump on the story, mentioning how pretty the girls were.
5:38
[SPEAKER_00]: And also imagine they've been seen with cellars in a non-safety part of town.
5:45
[SPEAKER_02]: But just fascinating monuments, the perfectly beautiful Buckingham memorial fountain on the lake front of downtown Chicago.
5:53
[SPEAKER_00]: The 50s in America was viewed with a great nostalgia and fondness and with a sense of innocence.
6:01
[SPEAKER_00]: The parents letting their kids roam free, knowing they were safe.
6:09
[SPEAKER_00]: But the country was about to change forever.
6:12
[SPEAKER_00]: What many believing that it was the murder of the grime sisters, the brought about that change, a proverbial dagger through the heart of innocence.
6:33
[SPEAKER_00]: If witnesses are to be believed, Barbara and Assistant Patricia have been spotted in just about every part of Chicago and its outer areas, and although their parents and siblings were worried to death, but apparently the girls weren't going to let that get in the way having a good time, because in the preceding week they've been spotted in record stores.
6:58
[SPEAKER_00]: bug at joints, and even told an old man to shut up after he he's dropped, they were looking for a bus, and he tried to direct them.
7:05
[SPEAKER_00]: It seemed like most of Chicago would now see the girls, and it certainly hadn't gone unnoticed that Boba crimes at 5 foot 10.
7:14
[SPEAKER_00]: Lanky, and well-developed for her age, garnered a lot of attention from men, was several so-called friends, thanks she was a bit of a terror way.
7:24
[SPEAKER_00]: Now national news, even Elvis sent out a plea for the girls to return home, but that publicity also attracted every hustler and town.
7:34
[SPEAKER_00]: The mother received several ransom notes, saying they'd return the girls for money.
7:39
[SPEAKER_06]: hold them against their will.
7:41
[SPEAKER_06]: If they'll please let them go out and give them a lift from the bottom of my eyes, just don't make girls get home.
8:01
[SPEAKER_00]: There was 3 p.m., give it take a few minutes when a newspaper man knocked on the door, told the mother, and a siblings, the news.
8:24
[SPEAKER_00]: The sisters had been dumped nude by the side of the rope near a railing, like there were garbage, with the youngest sisters naked body laying on top of a sister's face.
8:34
[SPEAKER_00]: They picked up Joe Grimes from work, as he was just open in his lunch box, hadn't even taken his first bite at his sandwich.
8:43
[SPEAKER_00]: They dragged him out to identify his dead daughters.
8:46
[SPEAKER_00]: Frozen up like popsicles, he started driving even right then and there, crying like a baby.
8:53
[SPEAKER_04]: Do you have any idea how long these girls have been lying here?
8:57
[SPEAKER_04]: There's snow in between the bodies.
8:58
[SPEAKER_04]: There's some snow in it, the body.
9:00
[SPEAKER_04]: And from the position and the condition of the bodies, I would say they've been here in the matter of days, see 45 minutes.
9:08
[SPEAKER_00]: The two girls will completely naked.
9:14
[SPEAKER_00]: Oppositions will found on them.
9:17
[SPEAKER_00]: no possessions were found nearby, and if anybody wanted to know what happened, the corners report wasn't going to help.
9:24
[SPEAKER_00]: Three experts in their field were brought in to examine the bodies, each one giving conflicting reports, with two of them figuring the girls at most likely died within five hours leaving the movie theater, with a senior pathologist believing they'd been kept alive for about two weeks.
9:41
[SPEAKER_00]: The girls had punctured wounds all over their bodies, including their face.
9:45
[SPEAKER_00]: One pathologist believed it was rodent bites.
9:48
[SPEAKER_00]: While the other two, said it was most likely ice-picks.
9:52
[SPEAKER_00]: Tax ecology reports revealed that neither girl had been drunk, drugged or poisoned prior to that death.
9:57
[SPEAKER_00]: The girls had abrasions on their bodies, and it clearly been beaten.
10:01
[SPEAKER_00]: Through the path all it just confirmed that the girls had had in a course, but were undecided, whether it was forced or consensual, with only Patricia having seen in her vaginal fluid, because of death was shock from exposure.
10:16
[SPEAKER_00]: Meaning they want that when they've been dropped off.
10:23
[SPEAKER_00]: The girl's bodies had been discovered after a rabid thaw of a recent snowfall by construction worker named Leonard, Praskot, was driving home.
10:33
[SPEAKER_00]: It was the state of these bodies that senior pathologist Harry Gloss surmised that the grime sisters had most likely been kept alive till at least January 7th.
10:44
[SPEAKER_00]: Due to the documented weather conditions at the time, since only after that date would there have been snowfall to react with the ghost body temperature and cause the thin layer of ice that was found on that bodies.
10:55
[SPEAKER_00]: One other bit of disturbing evidence was that Barbara Grimes had curdled milk in a stomach, meaning she likes sour milk, or someone forced at a drink it.
11:04
[SPEAKER_00]: But this finding was our popular with the city police force because it would have met the girls were alive, and they still could have been saved if they were found.
11:12
[SPEAKER_00]: And Harry Gloss, Chief Corner of Cook County, refusing to recant his findings, was probably fired.
11:20
[SPEAKER_00]: And now we look at the conflicting evidence from the corners.
11:25
[SPEAKER_00]: The pathologist report shows that both of the girls had most likely had sexual intercourse, and they didn't believe that the girls had been ferns.
11:34
[SPEAKER_00]: The youngest Patricia had semen in a vagina, but also an stomach, meaning she'd swallowed.
11:41
[SPEAKER_00]: The oldest Barbara had both anal and vaginal and the course, but there was no signs of any semen.
11:48
[SPEAKER_00]: Our three pathologists had met there's a possibility that she'd swallowed semen, but they couldn't detect it because she had curdled milk in a stomach.
11:56
[SPEAKER_00]: Multiple witnesses say they'd seen the girls on Madison Avenue, the sleazy part of town, talking to sailors, and men pulling up to the curb in that car.
12:05
[SPEAKER_00]: While Gloss was suggesting, was it not inconceivable that these girls had accepted an invitation to a drink?
12:11
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe out for the right home, ended up in someone's place, one thing led to another, the party heated up, and the first the girls liked it, maybe the girls got too clingy, or skittish, started screaming for the mother.
12:23
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it wouldn't be the first time that a party got out of hand.
12:27
[SPEAKER_00]: Especially if you're a Navy man, try explaining to your commanding officer while your girlfriends got teddy bears on or on the ways.
12:35
[SPEAKER_00]: But for the detectives, this just won't add nop, goes one through a Catholic school, and at least from the outside they seem like presentable, good kids, but Harry Gloss disagreed in accused both the cops and the coroner's office of a cover-up.
12:48
[SPEAKER_00]: Saying they were trying to give the girls' respectability, well maybe they were none to be ad, because the autopsy showed that both girls had been sexually active, and they didn't seem to be forced into it.
12:58
[SPEAKER_00]: Then whom ever had finished with them, after they were done, they threw them out the cold naked, letting them die from exposure, and why were ice picks used on them?
13:06
[SPEAKER_00]: It did not up.
13:07
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe cops were trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.
13:11
[SPEAKER_00]: Stuff in that polyany values that didn't apply in 1950s America.
13:16
[SPEAKER_00]: But cops did have a suspect.
13:20
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, you've been after this on this case now for three years, and without success.
13:24
[SPEAKER_04]: How long will you continue to work on this case?
13:28
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, we will continue to work on until we solve it.
13:34
[SPEAKER_00]: In the 1950s, Child Killers, at least documented once, were few and far between.
13:40
[SPEAKER_00]: When it came to murders, cops were used to deal with street crime, gangs, and domestics.
13:48
[SPEAKER_00]: And the crime sisters' murders were complicated on many different levels, and there were tremendous pressure on Cook County Police to solve this crime.
13:57
[SPEAKER_00]: 3,000 people were questioned, 2,000 of them seriously interrogated, so as no surprise the two days after the girl's bodies were found, they arrested a semi-retarded dishwasher, by the name of Benny Bedwall.
14:12
[SPEAKER_00]: He'd been bragging the friends in a bar that he'd been banged in the two girls and they got through clingy and he had to end their relationship literally.
14:20
[SPEAKER_00]: And I guess because cops needed to solve the crime they wanted to believe it, even if they had to beat it out of the Simpleton.
14:28
[SPEAKER_00]: But no was buying it, not even the girl's mother, the evidence was circumstantial at best.
14:34
[SPEAKER_00]: Eliranic rhymes even told Benny's mother that she didn't believe for a second that her son had killed her daughters.
14:40
[SPEAKER_07]: The charges made by said, well, must be proven being.
14:43
[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, and they reasonable doubt, and we should be made to testify at this end quick, and we could use charges in front of our family.
14:52
[SPEAKER_07]: Our children are dead, and cannot provide advice.
14:57
[SPEAKER_07]: But our family must live with sailors.
14:59
[SPEAKER_07]: We demand an excellent vindication unto proven other way.
15:04
[SPEAKER_00]: And in the end, Chicago cops set the cut beneath the semi-retar loose, and they were no closer to solve in the crime from the day they found the ghost bodies.
15:15
[SPEAKER_00]: And the murders of the crime sisters remains unsolved.
15:22
[SPEAKER_00]: And 2013, a retired West Chicago police officer named Raymond Johnson began a personal investigation into the case.
15:31
[SPEAKER_00]: Johnson, considered by many to be an expert on this case, had become interested in the crime-sister's case, and 2010 when he'd been researching a book on Chicago's history.
15:42
[SPEAKER_00]: Having extensively researched the case, Johnson has stated his conviction that the case will be solvable, but only with the public's assistance.
15:58
[SPEAKER_00]: He believes that the perpetrator of this crime had been a 23-year-old, self-confessed, child killer, named Charles Leroy Malkwist, who had been considered a suspect in the sister's abduction and murder in 1957.
16:13
[SPEAKER_00]: Malquist had been convicted of a September 1958 murder of a 15-year-old girl named Bonnie Lee Scott who had no prior to her murder, whose the capitated body had been found two months after her disappearance, less than ten miles from where the Grimes' sister's bodies had been discovered.
16:32
[SPEAKER_00]: Following the discovery of Scott's body, investigators had noted similarities in the murders, and the body disposal of that of the Grimes' sisters.
16:42
[SPEAKER_00]: Nonetheless, Mel Quest was never questioned as to the potential culpability in the girl's murders.
16:48
[SPEAKER_00]: As his attorney had forbidden him from being questioned, a critics of this theory equipped the point out that Mel Quest had had a relationship with Barney Least God and knew a well.
16:59
[SPEAKER_00]: There's no proof that he'd ever met the crime sisters, or they'd ever crossed his path, and fastighed us still believed that theory
17:07
[SPEAKER_00]: that it was two sailors who murdered the girls who were on leave and as they were most likely transient to the city, they will never be found.
17:15
[SPEAKER_00]: We can only hope with DNA technology changing monthly as it is, then they'll reopen the case and look at the evidence and hopefully the perpetrator
17:34
[SPEAKER_00]: Before Barbara and Patricia disappeared, the parents thought that kids could catch a bus to the movies, stay for a second showing and come home.
17:45
[SPEAKER_00]: After the Grimes murders, those assumptions died.
17:50
[SPEAKER_00]: Every unknown car became suspicious.
17:53
[SPEAKER_00]: Every child who was 10 minutes late became a parent's nightmare.
17:59
[SPEAKER_00]: Chicago didn't just inherit an unsolved murder.
18:04
[SPEAKER_00]: It inherited fear.
18:08
[SPEAKER_00]: The investigation itself became part of the tragedy.
18:12
[SPEAKER_00]: When the desperate rush for answers, police chased false sightings, leaned on unreliable witnesses, and even extracted a confession that collapsed under the weight of evidence.
18:25
[SPEAKER_00]: Instead of bringing justice, the investigation left behind confusion, contradictions, and questions that still refuse to die, nearly 70 years later.
18:39
[SPEAKER_00]: The cases like this don't end when the bodies are found, they echo through generations.
18:47
[SPEAKER_00]: The Grimes family never got the one thing that every victim's family deserves, the truth and when the truth never comes, the crime never really ends, it just changes shape.
19:03
[SPEAKER_00]: And maybe that's why we're still talking about Barbara and Patricia today, not because the mysteries that are tainted, but because two young girls walked out of a movie theater, expect them to go home.
19:18
[SPEAKER_00]: And someone stole not only their lives, but his city's innocence.
19:29
[SPEAKER_00]: The rest.
19:31
[SPEAKER_00]: This is that bug, and I hope you've enjoyed this adoption of one of my joints.
19:37
[SPEAKER_00]: And remember, if you like what I do, please leave a positive review on your podcast provider.
20:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Seems like you would daydreamer I fixed to the sealer Looks like you were laughing at me I know you wouldn't laugh at me
20:34
[SPEAKER_01]: You know I never thought you would die, but baby you did Baby you did For tobacco on your lips Taste like sweet nectar
21:06
[SPEAKER_01]: Turn it all in your hair Like a filthy halo meant to be there Such a grave circumstance How it came to this I don't understand Baby goodbye Baby goodbye
21:54
[SPEAKER_01]: The fees don't be upset I promise I won't forget And goddamn I know that I'm going to help But it turns me on thinking about your smile
22:28
[SPEAKER_01]: This is our goodbyes.
22:35
[SPEAKER_01]: Baby, this is our last cry.
22:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, baby, this is our farewell.
23:02
[SPEAKER_01]: This is our last cry This is our last cry This is our last cry Baby, bye bye
