Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: On May 3rd, 1953, NBC aired Dragnet, episode 202, Big Carney.
- 0:08Speaker 1: In Los Angeles, Detective Sergeant Joe Friday and Sergeant Frank
- 0:12Speaker 1: Smith are assigned to burglary detail as a string of
- 0:16Speaker 1: theft strike shops along Wilshire Boulevard during the Christmas shopping season.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Their immediate case begins with an $ 8, 000 necklace taken from
- 0:26Speaker 1: a jewelry store shortly after opening. Then the trail leads
- 0:30Speaker 1: through stolen property reports, descriptions, and information concerning carnival workers
- 0:36Speaker 1: at a valley trailer camp. Jack Webb stars as Friday,
- 0:41Speaker 1: with Ben Alexander as Smith, in a script by John Robinson.
- 0:46Speaker 1: From the files of the Los Angeles Police Department, with
- 0:49Speaker 1: technical advice credited to Chief W.H. Parker's office, and now
- 0:54Speaker 1: our story begins.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Sound off for Chesterfield.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Chesterfield is best for you.
- 1:07Speaker 4: First cigarette with premium quality in both regular and king size.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Chesterfield brings you Dragnet.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen, the story you are about to hear
- 1:25Speaker 3: is true. The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
- 1:40Speaker 3: You're a detective sergeant. You're assigned to burglary detail. A
- 1:44Speaker 3: wave of burglaries has broken out in your city. The
- 1:47Speaker 3: thieves are fat. They're clever.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Your job?
- 1:50Speaker 5: Get them.
- 1:56Speaker 4: Years ahead of them all. Chesterfield is years ahead of
- 2:00Speaker 4: them all. The quality contrast between Chesterfield and other leading
- 2:04Speaker 4: brands is a revealing story. Recent chemical analyses give an
- 2:08Speaker 4: index of good quality for the country's six leading cigarette brands.
- 2:12Speaker 4: The index of good quality tables, which is a ratio
- 2:15Speaker 4: of high sugar to low nicotine, shows Chesterfield quality highest.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Chesterfield quality highest.
- 2:22Speaker 3: 15% higher than its nearest competitor. Chesterfield quality highest. 31%
- 2:28Speaker 3: higher than the average of the five other leading brands. Yes,
- 2:32Speaker 3: Chesterfield is first.
- 2:33Speaker 4: With premium quality in both regular and king size.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Don't you want to try a cigarette with a record
- 2:40Speaker 3: like this?
- 2:41Speaker 2: Chesterfield.
- 2:49Speaker 4: Dragnet, the documented drama of an actual crime. For the
- 2:53Speaker 4: next 30 minutes, in cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department,
- 2:57Speaker 4: you will travel step by step on the side of
- 2:59Speaker 4: the law to an actual case transcribed from official police files.
- 3:03Speaker 4: From beginning to end, from crime to punishment, Dragnet is
- 3:07Speaker 4: the story of your police.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Force in action.
- 3:14Speaker 6: It was Thursday, December 10th. It was cold in Los Angeles.
- 3:17Speaker 6: We were working the day watch out of burglary detail.
- 3:19Speaker 2: My partner's Frank Smith, the boss of Chief of Detective
- 3:21Speaker 2: Thad Brown. My name's Friday. We were on the way
- 3:24Speaker 2: out from the office, and it was 10.14 a.m.
- 3:25Speaker 6: When we got to the Armstrong Schneider Jewelry Company, the
- 3:28Speaker 6: manager's office.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Can I help you? Yes, ma'am. Police officers, would you
- 3:33Speaker 2: like to see Mr. Armstrong?
- 3:34Speaker 5: Oh, yes. Just a minute.
- 3:37Speaker 2: The police officers are here.
- 3:38Speaker 5: Yes, they're right away.
- 3:39Speaker 7: Will you go right in, please?
- 3:41Speaker 2: Thank you very much. Mr. Armstrong's office. Yes, ma'am.
- 3:45Speaker 5: I'm sorry. Good evening, sir.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Won't you come in? Thank you very much. Thank you. Mr. Armstrong? Yes.
- 3:51Speaker 2: My partner, Frank Smith. My name's Friday. How do you do?
- 3:54Speaker 2: Won't you sit down? Thank you very much. Would you
- 3:56Speaker 2: like a cigarette? Yes, sir. Thank you. Thanks. I have
- 3:59Speaker 2: a lighter.
- 4:04Speaker 8: As you know, this firm is probably the foremost fine
- 4:06Speaker 8: jewelry store.
- 4:06Speaker 2: On the coast. Yes, sir. I wonder if you'd tell
- 4:08Speaker 2: us about the theft.
- 4:09Speaker 9: Yes.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Well, we discovered it this morning. About what time was that?
- 4:13Speaker 8: About 9.45. That's when we missed it. I guess the
- 4:15Speaker 8: necklace was taken about 9. Must have been right after
- 4:18Speaker 8: we opened.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Could you give us a description of the piece?
- 4:20Speaker 8: Yes, I have it right here. Got it from the
- 4:23Speaker 8: insurance records. I have a drawing of it. We always
- 4:25Speaker 8: have that done on high price, madam.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Mm-hmm. Here you are. Thank you. What value do you
- 4:32Speaker 2: place on the necklace?
- 4:33Speaker 8: It's insured for $ 8, 000. The firm can't afford to take
- 4:36Speaker 8: a loss like that.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Could you tell us exactly how it was taken? Yes,
- 4:39Speaker 2: I can.
- 4:40Speaker 8: It was just after nine. We just opened the front door.
- 4:42Speaker 8: It's a shopper's Christmas, you know. Well, this one couple
- 4:45Speaker 8: came in and asked to see some of our more
- 4:46Speaker 8: expensive necklaces. Henderson brought the tray out of the safe
- 4:49Speaker 8: and showed the collection to the people.
- 4:50Speaker 5: Henderson?
- 4:51Speaker 2: Yes.
- 4:52Speaker 8: He's the clerk who was waiting on the people.
- 4:54Speaker 5: Oh.
- 4:55Speaker 8: I gave him his notice. I had to. It looks
- 4:58Speaker 8: to me like carelessness.
- 4:59Speaker 2: I wonder if we could talk to him.
- 5:01Speaker 5: Yes, all right.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 5:03Speaker 8: Miss Courtney, would you have Henderson sent in here, please?
- 5:07Speaker 2: Yes, right away. What?
- 5:09Speaker 8: No, tell him I'll call later. That's right, have him
- 5:13Speaker 8: leave the number and I'll call back.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Right, yes. He'll be right in. All right, thank you.
- 5:19Speaker 2: How long has this Henderson been working here?
- 5:21Speaker 8: I'd have to check the employment records to be sure. Offhand,
- 5:24Speaker 8: I think it's been about five years. Ever since we
- 5:27Speaker 8: opened at this location, we used to have a store downtown,
- 5:29Speaker 8: then we.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Moved out here. Where did he work before that?
- 5:32Speaker 5: Well, let me see.
- 5:33Speaker 8: I think it was someplace up north. San Francisco, I believe. Yes,
- 5:36Speaker 8: he worked in a store up there. Had excellent references.
- 5:39Speaker 8: He's a good salesman.
- 5:40Speaker 2: But you gave him notice, huh?
- 5:42Speaker 8: Well, I felt it was the only thing to do.
- 5:44Speaker 8: If he's getting careless, he has no business working in
- 5:47Speaker 8: a store that deals with expensive merchandise.
- 5:51Speaker 5: Excuse me.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Yes?
- 5:54Speaker 8: Send him right in.
- 5:55Speaker 2: What?
- 5:57Speaker 8: No, please tell him to call later.
- 5:59Speaker 2: No, I'm not into anyone. No one but Sharon.
- 6:02Speaker 5: My wife.
- 6:03Speaker 7: Yes, sir.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Come in. Do you want to see me, Mr. Armstrong?
- 6:07Speaker 8: Yes, come right in, Henderson. These are police officers, Mr.
- 6:10Speaker 8: Friday and Mr.
- 6:11Speaker 5: Smith. This is Charles Henderson.
- 6:12Speaker 2: How are you? Hi.
- 6:13Speaker 5: How are you?
- 6:14Speaker 8: We'd like to ask you some questions about the theft.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Yes, sir. Anything I can do to help? Could you
- 6:18Speaker 2: give us a description of the couple you waited on? Yeah,
- 6:20Speaker 2: I think so.
- 6:20Speaker 10: The man was about 35, maybe 40. About how tall
- 6:23Speaker 10: was he?
- 6:24Speaker 2: Maybe 5'11. Might have been 6 feet. I'd say he
- 6:26Speaker 2: weighed about 155 pounds, something like that. Uh-huh. How about
- 6:29Speaker 2: his coloring, his complexion? It was light. It looked like
- 6:32Speaker 2: he'd been out in the sun, though. His nose was
- 6:33Speaker 2: all sunburned.
- 6:34Speaker 10: I noticed it because you don't often see people with
- 6:36Speaker 10: sunburns like that.
- 6:37Speaker 2: This time of the year. You know, December.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Holiday dress, you remember?
- 6:41Speaker 10: He had a gray hat on, gray chalk stripes, suit on,
- 6:43Speaker 10: flannel blue shirt, maroon tie. Didn't see his shoes. He
- 6:46Speaker 10: had on one of those new round collars. Oh, you know,
- 6:49Speaker 10: rounded here on.
- 6:50Speaker 2: The collar point? Mm-hmm. Was he clean shaven?
- 6:53Speaker 8: No.
- 6:53Speaker 10: No, he had a little mustache, one of those that
- 6:55Speaker 10: looks like it's drawn on with an eyebrow pencil.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Just a line, you know the kind.
- 6:59Speaker 4: Uh-huh.
- 6:59Speaker 2: How about the woman? What'd she look like? She was
- 7:01Speaker 2: a small woman, not much more than 5'2, little, about
- 7:04Speaker 2: 100 pounds.
- 7:05Speaker 5: Real pretty.
- 7:05Speaker 10: She had dark hair and blue eyes, very fair. I
- 7:08Speaker 10: noticed it because I thought at the time that maybe
- 7:10Speaker 10: she dyed her hair.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Mm-hmm. Do you have any marks or scars you saw?
- 7:13Speaker 5: No.
- 7:14Speaker 2: No, I don't think so, no. How was she dressed?
- 7:16Speaker 2: She was a little too overdressed. Had a dress and
- 7:19Speaker 2: a coat. Had a jewel clip.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Here on her dress.
- 7:22Speaker 2: She looked kind of flashy, cheap, you know. Oh, I see.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Anything about the way they talked and the accent, anything
- 7:27Speaker 2: like that? No. Nothing I can remember. Would you remember
- 7:30Speaker 2: if either one of them wore glasses, maybe?
- 7:32Speaker 5: No.
- 7:33Speaker 10: The man, though, he had a kind of funny way
- 7:34Speaker 10: of talking.
- 7:35Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 7:36Speaker 10: Oh, he sounded sort of like one of those pitch
- 7:38Speaker 10: men on TV. You know, the kind that sells kitchen gadgets,
- 7:41Speaker 10: things like that.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 7:43Speaker 6: Could you tell us what happened, what they said when
- 7:45Speaker 6: they came in, how they took the jewel?
- 7:47Speaker 5: Yes.
- 7:48Speaker 10: They came in right after we opened that to see
- 7:50Speaker 10: something in necklaces. They wanted to pay around.
- 7:53Speaker 7: $ 5, 000.
- 7:53Speaker 10: So I brought out the tray, but didn't find anything
- 7:55Speaker 10: that they liked. And then I brought out the equalizer.
- 7:58Speaker 10: Beautiful thing, $ 8, 500. You know, Mr.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Armstrong, the emerald-cut diamond with a small sapphire?
- 8:03Speaker 8: Yes, I know the one.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Beautiful thing. Excuse me, can I use that ashtray a minute? Yeah,
- 8:08Speaker 2: thank you. I wonder if you'd go on, please.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Oh, sure.
- 8:10Speaker 10: Well, I brought out the other tray and showed them
- 8:12Speaker 10: the necklaces in it.
- 8:14Speaker 2: They both looked for a long time.
- 8:15Speaker 10: Then the woman said that she didn't think there was
- 8:17Speaker 10: anything there she wanted.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 8:18Speaker 8: What was the matter? Didn't they care for our designs?
- 8:20Speaker 10: No, it wasn't that, sir. They just didn't see anything
- 8:23Speaker 10: they liked. So they moved back to the other tray.
- 8:25Speaker 10: Then the woman said she'd found what she wanted. It
- 8:28Speaker 10: was a small piece, three diamonds and four small rubies.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Did they buy that? No, they said they wanted to
- 8:32Speaker 2: think about it.
- 8:33Speaker 10: They made a big thing about asking me if I
- 8:35Speaker 10: thought that it would be sold before they could make
- 8:37Speaker 10: up their minds.
- 8:37Speaker 7: Mm-hmm.
- 8:38Speaker 10: Well, I told them if they wanted to put a
- 8:40Speaker 10: small deposit on it, we could hold it for them.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Yes.
- 8:43Speaker 10: The man said he'd rather not do that. He said
- 8:44Speaker 10: they'd know by this afternoon. By that time, there were
- 8:47Speaker 10: several people in the store, Christmas shoppers, you know. Some
- 8:50Speaker 10: of them were looking at a display of bracelets we
- 8:52Speaker 10: had on the counter. I went over to them to
- 8:54Speaker 10: see if there was anything I could do. You know,
- 8:56Speaker 10: tell them that I'd get someone to wait on them.
- 8:58Speaker 2: I understand. It's a foolish thing to do, I know that.
- 9:00Speaker 8: I'm afraid it was.
- 9:01Speaker 10: Yeah, I know now. Well, when I got back, the
- 9:05Speaker 10: couple was leaving. They told me they'd be in this
- 9:07Speaker 10: afternoon and let me know. Walked out of the store,
- 9:10Speaker 10: and I stopped to help a gentleman that came in.
- 9:13Speaker 10: When I turned back to the trays, I noticed the
- 9:15Speaker 10: necklace in the more expensive tray was gone.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Would you be able to give us positive identification of
- 9:19Speaker 2: these people if you ever saw them again? Yes, I'm
- 9:21Speaker 2: sure I would. I wonder if you can come downtown
- 9:23Speaker 2: with us and look at some pictures, see if you
- 9:25Speaker 2: can identify the thieves for us. Of course, if Mr.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Armstrong has no objection. Not at all.
- 9:28Speaker 8: Would you like me to come along, too?
- 9:30Speaker 6: I don't think that will be necessary right now. If
- 9:31Speaker 6: there's anything we need, we can get in touch with.
- 9:32Speaker 2: You here, can't we?
- 9:33Speaker 5: Yes, right here at my home.
- 9:34Speaker 8: I can give you that number.
- 9:35Speaker 2: All right, fine. Okay. Here it is. Thank you, sir. Well,
- 9:43Speaker 2: thanks very much. You ready to go?
- 9:45Speaker 5: Yes, sir.
- 9:45Speaker 2: I'll get my hat.
- 9:47Speaker 5: Just a minute, Henderson.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
- 9:49Speaker 8: As soon as you get through down there, come on back.
- 9:52Speaker 5: Your job's waiting for you.
- 9:53Speaker 2: All right, sir.
- 9:54Speaker 5: I'd like to come back.
- 9:57Speaker 8: Anything I can do to help, just let me know.
- 9:59Speaker 2: All right, Mr. Armstrong.
- 10:00Speaker 8: Not at all.
- 10:00Speaker 2: I'll get my hat and meet you at the door.
- 10:04Speaker 7: Right.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Have you notified the insurance company of the theft yet, Armstrong?
- 10:10Speaker 8: I have a call into them now. I'm expecting an
- 10:12Speaker 8: agent from the firm any minute. Sure hope you can
- 10:14Speaker 8: recover it.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Yeah, sure.
- 10:16Speaker 9: We'll do the best we can. An $ 8, 000 necklace. How
- 10:19Speaker 9: do you think they'll go about disposing of it?
- 10:20Speaker 8: Break it up?
- 10:21Speaker 2: Well, either that or leave it in one piece.
- 10:23Speaker 5: That'll make it.
- 10:23Speaker 8: Kind of hard to unload, won't it? $ 8, 000?
- 10:26Speaker 2: Not at their price. 10.37 a.m.
- 10:36Speaker 6: We talked to the other people in the store. From them,
- 10:38Speaker 6: we got verifying descriptions of the two thieves. 11.32 a.m.,
- 10:41Speaker 6: Frank and I took the clerk, Charles Henderson, down to
- 10:43Speaker 6: the city hall and had him go through the mug books.
- 10:45Speaker 2: We got out a local and.
- 10:46Speaker 6: An APB on the pair of thieves, and a description
- 10:48Speaker 6: of the stolen necklace was prepared for the daily bulletin.
- 10:51Speaker 6: The insurance company that underwrote the necklace got in touch
- 10:54Speaker 6: with us and said that they were getting out printed
- 10:55Speaker 6: circulars to jewelers throughout the country. The victim was unable
- 10:59Speaker 6: to make an identification from the mug books.
- 11:01Speaker 2: We had the M.O.
- 11:02Speaker 10: Of the theft run through the staff's office, but when
- 11:04Speaker 10: the possibles were checked out, we had no new leads.
- 11:07Speaker 10: Further interrogation of the owners and employees of the stores
- 11:10Speaker 10: in the immediate vicinity of Armstrong and Schneider failed to
- 11:12Speaker 10: turn up anything new.
- 11:13Speaker 6: The theft was not a new one. For the past
- 11:15Speaker 6: six weeks, there'd been a series of burglaries taking place
- 11:18Speaker 6: out on Wilshire Boulevard. Most of them had been exclusive
- 11:20Speaker 6: women's stores or jewelry shops. To date, all of them
- 11:23Speaker 6: had been articles of small individual value, none that approached
- 11:26Speaker 6: the value of the necklace taken from Armstrong and Schneider.
- 11:29Speaker 6: In an attempt to apprehend the thieves, all of the
- 11:32Speaker 6: usual avenues of sale of stolen.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Goods had been checked.
- 11:35Speaker 6: None of the precautions apparently did any good, but theft continued.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Another two weeks passed.
- 11:39Speaker 6: In that time, the thieves hit three times, all in
- 11:42Speaker 6: the same general area. The employees of the victimized stores
- 11:45Speaker 6: were questioned. From the information we got from them, we
- 11:47Speaker 6: could be certain that the suspects.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Were the same ones we were after.
- 11:51Speaker 6: On Tuesday, December 29th, Frank and I got back from
- 11:53Speaker 6: checking a lead.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Well, there's another one that went to no place. Yeah,
- 11:59Speaker 2: go and check the book. Yeah, I'll get it. Anything there? Yeah,
- 12:08Speaker 2: there's a call here from Alex Olsen. Olsen?
- 12:11Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Got a Dunkirk number. You know Olsen? No, that name
- 12:15Speaker 2: doesn't mean anything to me. Say what it's about. Well,
- 12:17Speaker 2: just call him. It's important. All right. Give me the number, huh? Yeah.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Here you go. What is this? 190? Is that a nine? Yeah,
- 12:28Speaker 2: I think so. Yeah, it's a nine. You don't make
- 12:31Speaker 2: nines very good. Sloppy. Can't write. Can I speak to Alex? Oh,
- 12:40Speaker 2: Alex Olsen. Yeah. Yeah, that's right. The hotel. Yeah. Hello.
- 12:48Speaker 2: This Olsen?
- 12:49Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:50Speaker 2: This is Friday. Police department. You want me to call you? Yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Sure.
- 12:56Speaker 2: I remember.
- 12:56Speaker 3: Uh-huh. Yeah, sure.
- 12:58Speaker 2: We'd like to talk to you.
- 13:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 13:01Speaker 2: No, we'll come over there. That's right. You want to
- 13:03Speaker 2: give me the address? Just a minute.
- 13:06Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 13:08Speaker 7: Okay.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Okay. All right. Bye.
- 13:12Speaker 5: Bye.
- 13:14Speaker 6: Olsen, he works for that carnival. You remember we talked
- 13:16Speaker 6: to him last year? He says he wants to see
- 13:18Speaker 6: us about some burglaries now.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, I remember. He says he's in with the thieves.
- 13:21Speaker 10: 11.26 a.m. We drove out to the address Olsen had
- 13:29Speaker 10: given me on the phone.
- 13:30Speaker 2: We talked to the desk clerk at the hotel.
- 13:32Speaker 6: He said that Olsen had just moved in, and that
- 13:34Speaker 6: during the time he'd been there, Olsen hadn't talked much
- 13:36Speaker 6: to any of the other people in the place. The
- 13:38Speaker 6: clerk gave us his room number, and Frank and I
- 13:39Speaker 6: went up to talk to him.
- 13:40Speaker 10: Oh, where is that?
- 13:41Speaker 5: Joe Friday.
- 13:43Speaker 2: All right, just a minute.
- 13:48Speaker 7: All right, come on in.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Thanks. All right. Olsen, this is my partner, Frank Smith. Oh.
- 13:56Speaker 5: Yeah, I remember you. Sit down.
- 14:00Speaker 8: Thanks.
- 14:02Speaker 5: You want a drink?
- 14:03Speaker 2: No.
- 14:04Speaker 5: Oh, I've got to have one.
- 14:06Speaker 2: What was it you wanted to talk to us about, Olsen? Olsen?
- 14:16Speaker 2: What was it you wanted to talk to us about? Oh, man.
- 14:19Speaker 5: I don't know where I hang over. I really get them.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Yeah, well, let's get to the point, shall we? What's
- 14:23Speaker 2: on your mind?
- 14:24Speaker 9: Oh, I'll tell you. I don't know why I drink
- 14:27Speaker 9: so much. I feel terrible the next day. I always
- 14:29Speaker 9: drink too much. All right, now, look, Olsen, maybe you've
- 14:31Speaker 9: got a lot of time.
- 14:32Speaker 2: We haven't. We didn't come over here to sit and
- 14:33Speaker 2: watch you drink. Now, get to the point. You said
- 14:34Speaker 2: on the phone that you were in with a gang
- 14:35Speaker 2: of thieves we were looking for. Now, what about it?
- 14:38Speaker 5: What I told you on the phone is true. It's
- 14:40Speaker 5: all true. I'm glad to tell you. Get it over.
- 14:42Speaker 5: Get it all out in the open. That's what I
- 14:43Speaker 5: need to do. Get it all out in the open.
- 14:45Speaker 2: You had any breakfast yet?
- 14:47Speaker 5: No, I just got up before I called you.
- 14:49Speaker 9: Is there any place around here you can get something
- 14:51Speaker 9: to eat? Don't make no difference around here. Nobody knows me.
- 14:54Speaker 9: I think there's a place down the street right next
- 14:56Speaker 9: to the hotel. But what's all this about food?
- 14:57Speaker 2: I think you'll feel better if you have something to eat,
- 14:59Speaker 2: won't you?
- 15:00Speaker 5: No, wait a minute.
- 15:02Speaker 2: You've had enough of that. Put it down.
- 15:03Speaker 5: I don't want no food.
- 15:06Speaker 2: All right, we do. Let's go.
- 15:09Speaker 6: You guys are getting a little bossy. We want to
- 15:11Speaker 6: hear what you've got to say. You keep hitting that bottle,
- 15:13Speaker 6: neither one of us is going to make it.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Come on, Sal. We'll buy you some breakfast. You got
- 15:17Speaker 2: a coat? It's cold out. Oh, yeah.
- 15:23Speaker 5: I'm sure glad you guys came. I'm glad to get
- 15:25Speaker 5: this off my chest.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Wait a minute. Those dresses in there, women's clothes, those
- 15:28Speaker 2: belong to you?
- 15:29Speaker 3: Oh, no.
- 15:30Speaker 5: I'm just keeping them for a friend.
- 15:32Speaker 2: The label's on some of them here. Come from out
- 15:35Speaker 2: on Wilshire, don't they?
- 15:36Speaker 5: Hey, you get a gold star. I'll tell you about that.
- 15:39Speaker 5: That's part of the deal.
- 15:39Speaker 2: You want to tell us now?
- 15:40Speaker 9: Oh, look, you made a deal about some coffee. Maybe
- 15:42Speaker 9: it'll help me find my hands. Are you going to
- 15:44Speaker 9: back out now?
- 15:45Speaker 2: All right, let's go. We'll come back.
- 15:46Speaker 5: You can come back.
- 15:47Speaker 9: Take all the time you want. Look, the dress is over.
- 15:49Speaker 9: I got some other stuff you'll want to see, too.
- 15:51Speaker 9: But come on, let's go. Let's walk down.
- 15:59Speaker 5: Let's not take the elevator. It's too noisy.
- 16:01Speaker 4: Murder.
- 16:01Speaker 2: All right. What's this other stuff you wanted to show us, Olsen?
- 16:07Speaker 5: The jewelry. I got some of it in the dresser.
- 16:09Speaker 5: It's cheap stuff. It's nothing worth anything. It's cheap.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Where'd you get the clothes and jewelry?
- 16:15Speaker 5: Oh, Red asked me to keep them for him.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Who?
- 16:18Speaker 5: Oh, he's the guy you want. He's the one that's
- 16:20Speaker 5: engineering the theft. He's the one. The real crumb. Big man.
- 16:24Speaker 5: He's the one you want. I'd like to see you
- 16:25Speaker 5: get it.
- 16:26Speaker 2: How many other people working with him?
- 16:28Speaker 5: Three others.
- 16:29Speaker 2: You know who they are? Sure.
- 16:30Speaker 5: I know the whole story, start to finish. I know
- 16:32Speaker 5: the whole thing. I'll tell you. I'll tell you all
- 16:34Speaker 5: about it. Let's go out the side way.
- 16:38Speaker 9: All right.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Now, where's this coffee shop?
- 16:43Speaker 5: Oh, wait a minute. You sure you wouldn't like a belt?
- 16:46Speaker 2: No, and neither do you. Now, let's go.
- 16:48Speaker 5: Okay, you're calling it. The restaurant's right down here.
- 16:50Speaker 2: There's a couple of doors. You know where this red is?
- 16:54Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll tell you. He's the one you want.
- 16:56Speaker 2: How about the woman who works for them?
- 16:57Speaker 5: Oh, that's Maye.
- 16:58Speaker 9: Red's not the guy who goes into the stores, though.
- 17:00Speaker 9: The fellow that works that part of the operations is
- 17:02Speaker 9: his brother-in-law, a guy named Hank.
- 17:04Speaker 2: What was her name?
- 17:05Speaker 9: May.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Was May. Is she the woman in the team?
- 17:08Speaker 5: Yeah. Red wouldn't trust anybody else. He's a big man,
- 17:11Speaker 5: you know. You don't believe it. You just ask Red.
- 17:14Speaker 5: He'll tell you. Big man. Big bum.
- 17:16Speaker 2: That's the place? Yeah.
- 17:19Speaker 5: Uh, you're positive?
- 17:21Speaker 9: No, I'm good.
- 17:27Speaker 2: The booth in the back, all right?
- 17:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Hey, Joe, it doesn't look like they got service in
- 17:32Speaker 2: the booth. What do you want, Olsen?
- 17:34Speaker 9: It ain't what I want, but I'll settle for a
- 17:35Speaker 9: cup of coffee.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Joe?
- 17:37Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. I'll get it and bring it back.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Come on, Olsen, let's go back.
- 17:41Speaker 7: Sit down.
- 17:47Speaker 2: All right, now, I suppose you start right at the
- 17:49Speaker 2: beginning and tell me about it, huh? Who's Red? How
- 17:51Speaker 2: do they work the operation? Where can we find him?
- 17:52Speaker 2: Tell us everything.
- 17:53Speaker 5: All right. Well, first off, Red's real name is Keith Jameson.
- 17:57Speaker 5: They call him Red because he's got red hair. Yeah.
- 18:00Speaker 2: What's he do for a living?
- 18:01Speaker 9: He works for Connie. Most of the year, we're on
- 18:03Speaker 9: the road. That's the off season. So he's laying up
- 18:05Speaker 9: in a trailer camp out in the valley. He doesn't
- 18:07Speaker 9: do anything regular, huh?
- 18:08Speaker 2: He's a stealer. You one of the owners of this carnival?
- 18:10Speaker 9: No, he runs a pitch game. You know, rings and
- 18:12Speaker 9: the pegs. If they play real good, you can win
- 18:14Speaker 9: a quarter with a slum for five bucks.
- 18:16Speaker 2: How about his wife? She travel with the show?
- 18:19Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, she travels. It ain't a regular show. Not
- 18:22Speaker 5: Red's part.
- 18:23Speaker 9: He's just got a concession. You know, he goes with
- 18:24Speaker 9: the show like a leech. Been thrown out of a
- 18:27Speaker 9: dozen carnies for crooked stuff. Brother-in-law's a dip when we're
- 18:30Speaker 9: on the road. Picks pockets in the crowd around the
- 18:32Speaker 9: rich place. He's gotten us all in a lot of trouble.
- 18:35Speaker 9: No carny in the country will have us around anymore.
- 18:37Speaker 9: Don't take him long to get wise to us.
- 18:40Speaker 2: He's the one that's in on the burglaries with Red
- 18:42Speaker 2: and his wife, is that it?
- 18:43Speaker 5: That's right. He lists the stuff.
- 18:44Speaker 2: How about his wife? Where does she fit in?
- 18:46Speaker 9: Well, she's the distraction, you know, the one that comes
- 18:48Speaker 9: up and asks questions, pulls the clerk away so Hank
- 18:51Speaker 9: can list the stuff.
- 18:52Speaker 5: In case there's any trouble, Hank exits lumber, too.
- 18:55Speaker 2: What do you mean, lumber?
- 18:56Speaker 5: Well, you know, muscle. He takes care of the guys that.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Mm-hmm. Hey, let me give you a hand
- 19:01Speaker 2: with that, all right? Yeah, here. Look at my son.
- 19:04Speaker 2: That's Splash time. Is it splintered? No, it's good hot
- 19:07Speaker 2: coffee in there. Here, I'll open it.
- 19:10Speaker 5: Oh, thanks. Come on, pass your sugar, will you?
- 19:13Speaker 2: Yeah, here you are. Where do you fit into this, Olsen?
- 19:19Speaker 5: No place, really. I'm just along for the ride.
- 19:21Speaker 9: I think Red figures sometime the axe is going to
- 19:23Speaker 9: fall and he wants my head under it. I usually
- 19:25Speaker 9: hold on to the stolen stuff until Red finds a buyer.
- 19:28Speaker 9: Does he use a fence?
- 19:29Speaker 5: No, he pushes his stuff himself. He usually works on
- 19:32Speaker 5: the tip.
- 19:33Speaker 9: You know, if somebody wants to buy a piece of merchandise,
- 19:35Speaker 9: Red meets him and sets up a deal.
- 19:37Speaker 7: Uh-huh.
- 19:37Speaker 2: You wanting to cooperate with us all along the line
- 19:39Speaker 2: on this thing?
- 19:40Speaker 5: Sure, sure. I'll go along with you.
- 19:43Speaker 2: You know where the necklace is that they lifted a
- 19:44Speaker 2: couple of weeks ago?
- 19:45Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, Red's got it. He's looking for a buyer now.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Do you think you can set up a meet for us?
- 19:52Speaker 5: Yeah. If you thought you wanted to buy the piece,
- 19:54Speaker 5: it could be done.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Can you set up a meet? Sure.
- 19:56Speaker 5: I want to see you get him.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Tell me something. How are you going to come out
- 20:01Speaker 2: on this if we pick up Red and the others?
- 20:03Speaker 2: What do you want out of it?
- 20:04Speaker 9: I got my reasons. I got good reasons. You want
- 20:07Speaker 9: to tell us what they are? Sure, I got no
- 20:09Speaker 9: reason not to. Give me the sugar again.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:14Speaker 9: You see, Red figures he's gonna make a sideshow character
- 20:17Speaker 9: out of me next season.
- 20:18Speaker 5: I'm not gonna go that route.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Yeah? What do you mean?
- 20:21Speaker 9: Oh, you know, the wild man from Borneo sitting in
- 20:24Speaker 9: a pit all day and yell at the customers. Bitch
- 20:27Speaker 9: like that always draws a big crowd. Red figures it'll
- 20:30Speaker 9: be good for picking pockets.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:32Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know. By now, Red's out of his mind.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:37Speaker 9: Wild man from Borneo. Even the leopard skin won't help
- 20:41Speaker 9: look at me. I only weigh 105 pounds.
- 20:58Speaker 4: You are listening to Dragnet, the authentic story of your
- 21:01Speaker 4: police force in action.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Chesterfield is best for you. Listen to Chesterfield's record.
- 21:07Speaker 4: For a full year and two months, a doctor has
- 21:10Speaker 4: been making regular examinations of a group of Chesterfield smokers,
- 21:14Speaker 4: and he reports no adverse effects to the nose, throat,
- 21:18Speaker 4: and sinuses from smoking Chesterfield.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Don't you want to try a cigarette with a record
- 21:24Speaker 3: like this?
- 21:25Speaker 2: Chesterfield. First with premium quality in both regular and king size.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Chesterfield. First choice with Young America. And that's from a
- 21:35Speaker 3: survey of 274 colleges and universities. Try Chesterfield today. Remember,
- 21:43Speaker 3: Chesterfield is America's best cigarette buy.
- 21:46Speaker 7: 2.24 p.m.
- 21:56Speaker 2: We continued to talk to Alex Olson.
- 21:58Speaker 6: He told us what he knew of the operation of
- 22:00Speaker 6: the thieves. We went back to his room and searched
- 22:02Speaker 6: it thoroughly. We found several pieces of cheap costume jewelry
- 22:05Speaker 6: and several of the stolen dresses. Most of the other
- 22:08Speaker 6: things in his room were worthless. As far as we knew,
- 22:10Speaker 6: it had not been stolen. We took him down to
- 22:12Speaker 6: the city hall and had him checked to R & I.
- 22:14Speaker 6: He had an arrest record showing several arrests for being
- 22:16Speaker 6: drunk in a public place. We checked the name Keith
- 22:19Speaker 6: Red Jamison through the files. There was no record on him.
- 22:22Speaker 6: There was no record in the monitor file either. Jameson's
- 22:25Speaker 6: brother-in-law and the two women were also checked out, but
- 22:27Speaker 6: we found no previous criminal record for either of them.
- 22:30Speaker 6: Communications were gotten off to Washington to check the possibility
- 22:32Speaker 6: that the suspects might have records in other states.
- 22:34Speaker 2: 4.40 p.m.
- 22:37Speaker 6: We met in Captain Wisdom's office. Olsen told us that
- 22:39Speaker 6: he'd arranged a meeting for us with Red. While we
- 22:42Speaker 6: listened on an extension phone, he called the suspect, told
- 22:45Speaker 6: him that he had a buyer for the necklace. A
- 22:47Speaker 6: meet was set up for the following morning at the
- 22:49Speaker 6: entrance to Alvera Street. Red said that he'd have the
- 22:51Speaker 6: necklace with him at the time. 5.37 p.m. Frank, Olsen,
- 22:55Speaker 6: and I drove out to the trailer camp in the valley.
- 22:57Speaker 6: We checked the trailer that Red lived in and also
- 22:59Speaker 6: the one his brother-in-law had. We got a good look
- 23:02Speaker 6: at the car Red would drive to the meet, and
- 23:04Speaker 6: then we arranged for a stakeout on the trailer park.
- 23:05Speaker 10: 8.23 p.m. The three of us drove back down to
- 23:08Speaker 10: the city hall.
- 23:11Speaker 9: You ain't going to try and take him at the meet,
- 23:12Speaker 9: are you?
- 23:13Speaker 2: We haven't got around to that yet.
- 23:14Speaker 5: Why? Well, you do, and it's going to point straight
- 23:16Speaker 5: at me.
- 23:16Speaker 9: You ain't going to put him away forever, you know.
- 23:18Speaker 5: He's going to get out, and he's going to draw
- 23:20Speaker 5: a straight line to me. I don't want that.
- 23:21Speaker 2: I've got to be protected. We'll take care of you.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Don't worry about it.
- 23:23Speaker 5: Oh, big deal. You'll take care of me. Well, how?
- 23:26Speaker 5: That's what I want to know. How are you going
- 23:27Speaker 5: to do it?
- 23:27Speaker 2: We'll get him before he gets to the meet.
- 23:29Speaker 5: Here you go, in here. Look, tell me, how are
- 23:35Speaker 5: you going to work it?
- 23:36Speaker 2: We'll come up with a way.
- 23:37Speaker 9: You ain't going to get near him in plain clothes.
- 23:38Speaker 9: I'll tell you that right now. He'll spot you a
- 23:40Speaker 9: mile away. Comes to cops, he's got eyes in the
- 23:43Speaker 9: back of his head. You can't get anywhere near him
- 23:45Speaker 9: in those clothes.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Don't worry, we won't. We'll be picked up for something else.
- 23:48Speaker 2: We'll find a necklace on him if he's got it,
- 23:50Speaker 2: and you'll never know that's what we're after. be in
- 23:54Speaker 2: uniform in the traffic car coming in from the valley.
- 23:57Speaker 2: That might work, huh, Frank? Yeah, I think so. He's
- 23:59Speaker 2: bound to make a mistake. When he does, we'll be there.
- 24:02Speaker 5: Yeah, that'll do it. That never.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Yeah, that ought to work.
- 24:05Speaker 5: Yeah, that'll work good. Yeah. You guys wouldn't like.
- 24:11Speaker 2: No, we wouldn't. No booze.
- 24:13Speaker 5: Okay.
- 24:15Speaker 9: I just noticed the bar across the street. I thought
- 24:17Speaker 9: maybe you guys would like to stop there. I'd I'd
- 24:19Speaker 9: feel a little better about this if I had a drink.
- 24:21Speaker 9: Just a little one.
- 24:21Speaker 5: Come on now, buddy. Sorry, Alex.
- 24:23Speaker 2: I'm going to take you over to the main jail.
- 24:24Speaker 5: You got a what?
- 24:25Speaker 2: For the time being, we got to hold you.
- 24:28Speaker 9: Now, it ain't the jail that bothers me, not being
- 24:30Speaker 9: in jail. It's just that I hear it's pretty rough
- 24:32Speaker 9: to get a drink over at the Gray Bar Hotel.
- 24:34Speaker 9: You know, that's the only thing that bothers me. There's
- 24:36Speaker 9: no room service there.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Yeah, well, it'll all work out for you.
- 24:39Speaker 5: Well, I don't know.
- 24:40Speaker 8: I got mixed up in this thing. Seems like I
- 24:42Speaker 8: got no choice in anything.
- 24:43Speaker 5: It don't seem fair. I got no choice.
- 24:45Speaker 2: DA's office will know what you did. It'll be marked
- 24:47Speaker 2: down that way.
- 24:48Speaker 9: I got no beef with you guys. You better take
- 24:51Speaker 9: it easy with Red, though. Is that right?
- 24:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:54Speaker 5: He's got a gun.
- 25:02Speaker 6: The following morning at 4.30 a.m., Frank and I were
- 25:04Speaker 6: dressed in the uniform.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Of traffic officers. We were parked two blocks from the
- 25:08Speaker 2: trailer park in a traffic car.
- 25:10Speaker 6: The meet with Red was scheduled for 9 a.m. The
- 25:12Speaker 6: officers on stakeout at the trailer park told us that
- 25:14Speaker 6: they'd seen no activity in Red's trailer the night before.
- 25:17Speaker 6: From where we were parked, we could keep his car
- 25:19Speaker 6: under constant surveillance. At 7.45 a.m., we saw the suspect
- 25:23Speaker 6: and his wife come out of the trailer and get
- 25:25Speaker 6: into the car. We followed them over to Ventura Boulevard,
- 25:28Speaker 6: and from there down Coinga Pass. We kept far enough
- 25:30Speaker 6: behind them so that they'd have less chance of knowing
- 25:32Speaker 6: that they were being followed. They turned by the freeway
- 25:35Speaker 6: construction point and continued on down Coinga Boulevard. When they
- 25:39Speaker 6: got to the corner of Yucca and Coinga, they made
- 25:41Speaker 6: a mistake. They turned left from the wrong lane of traffic.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Well, that's it. Do you want to hit the siren?
- 25:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 25:46Speaker 2: I got the light.
- 25:47Speaker 1: He's going straight down Yucca, Joe.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Yeah. Pull up behind him, huh? Right. Okay, he sees us.
- 25:54Speaker 7: He's pulling over.
- 26:00Speaker 5: I'll cover the other side. Watch yourself.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Right.
- 26:04Speaker 5: What's wrong, Loft? Sure, I didn't do anything.
- 26:06Speaker 2: See your operator's license, please? Sure, it's in my pocket.
- 26:08Speaker 5: I'll get it.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Do you want to get out of the car, please? Well,
- 26:10Speaker 2: I don't have to get out to show you my
- 26:11Speaker 2: driver's license. I'd like to have you get out of
- 26:12Speaker 2: the car. Don't argue with him, Red. Do what he says.
- 26:14Speaker 5: What's all this about, anyway?
- 26:16Speaker 2: What are you stopping me for? You made me an
- 26:17Speaker 2: illegal left turn back there at Coinga.
- 26:19Speaker 5: Illegal? Oh, you got the wrong guy. You see that
- 26:21Speaker 5: guy in front of me? He jumped the light something awful.
- 26:23Speaker 2: He's the guy you ought to be after.
- 26:24Speaker 5: He's the one, not me.
- 26:25Speaker 2: All right, move over to the car.
- 26:26Speaker 5: What?
- 26:27Speaker 2: Over to the car. Now put your hands up there.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Now against the car.
- 26:29Speaker 5: I don't know what you mean.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Now come off it, Jameson.
- 26:31Speaker 5: We meet.
- 26:36Speaker 2: What are you doing? You've got no right to beat
- 26:38Speaker 2: him up like that. Big things are making a left turn.
- 26:40Speaker 2: What are you guys trying to prove? Just wait until
- 26:43Speaker 2: the papers get this. We've got friends here. All right, lady,
- 26:45Speaker 2: take it easy. I won't take it easy.
- 26:47Speaker 11: Man makes a mistake and you cops act like you
- 26:48Speaker 11: were the judges.
- 26:49Speaker 2: You've got no right to treat a citizen like that. Here,
- 26:51Speaker 2: thank you. I'll hold it.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:54Speaker 2: 38-12. You play rough, don't you, Red?
- 26:55Speaker 3: Shut up.
- 26:56Speaker 2: What's this, Red? You leave that alone. It's mine. It
- 26:58Speaker 2: doesn't concern you. Necklace, Joe? Yeah.
- 27:02Speaker 5: Joe, it's a necklace.
- 27:03Speaker 2: What's that prove?
