- 6:43Local wood carver advances to top ten of Johnny Depp's
- 6:48National Art Competition by Anela James Corbyn. What started with
- 6:54a wooden spoon brought from home brought home from a
- 6:59school has grown into a passion that has placed local
- 7:03artist Brian Davidson among the top five finalists in his
- 7:08division of a national competition presented by an entertainment Icon. Davidson,
- 7:14owner of Bluegrass Carving, is currently competing in the Johnny
- 7:18Depp Presents the People Artists Contest, a nationwide competition decided
- 7:24through the public voting online. With only two rounds remaining,
- 7:29he is hoping the local community will help him advance
- 7:33to the next level. I never thought I'd make it
- 7:36this far, Davidson said. Davidson specializes in chainsaw carving and
- 7:41wood carving, creating detailed works that often feature animals, particularly
- 7:47sea turtles. Although he has only been carving for about
- 7:51three or four years, his work has attracted attention both
- 7:55locally and nationally. His interest in woodworking begins when his
- 8:00son came home from school one day with a wooden
- 8:03spoon he had made. The project sparked Davidson's curiosity and
- 8:08inspired him to learn more about the craft. He also
- 8:12credits watching carving videos by Jeordie Johnson on YouTube with
- 8:17helping him develop his skills. For Davidson, woodworking is more
- 8:22than just creating art. My favorite thing about it is
- 8:26being able to zone in, he said, is comforting. He
- 8:30explained that he has always enjoyed creative work and previously
- 8:34worked in construction, making carving a natural fit. The competition's
- 8:39grand prize includes twenty five thousand dollars and the opportunity
- 8:44to have artwork displayed at the Art of Alisom Museum.
- 8:49Davidson said the organization's mission is especially meaningful to him
- 8:54because it supports individuals in recovery. A recovering addict himself,
- 8:59David's has been sober for twenty years. He credits meeting
- 9:03his wife and starting the family with helping him turn
- 9:07his life around. Today, he uses his artistic talents not
- 9:12only to create unique carvings, but also to support causes
- 9:16throughout the region. Davidson regularly donates pieces to fundraising auctions
- 9:22in Whitley and Knox Counties, including events benefiting Humane Society Gala.
- 9:29Originally from Riverside, California, Davidson has become a familiar face
- 9:34in the local arts community through his work and charitable contributions.
- 9:41Now with a chance to move one step closer to
- 9:43the competition's top prize, Davidson is encouraging community members to
- 9:48cast their votes and help him advance. Voting for Davidson

- 11:13Our next article is Laurel Whitley among counties approved for
- 11:18FEMA A by Macy Swafford Frankfurt. Eighteen Kentucky counties, including
- 11:23Laurel Whitley, Clay, Jackson, and Pulaski, have been approved for
- 11:28federal public assistance funding following the severe winter storm that
- 11:33impacted the commonwealth January twenty third through the twenty seventh.
- 11:38The approval comes after President Donald Trump and the Federal
- 11:41Emergency Management Agency FEMA granted Governor Andy Bursheer's requests for
- 11:47a Major Disaster declaration. According to Kentucky Emergency Management, the
- 11:53storm resulted in more than fifteen million dollars in costs
- 11:57related to debris removal, emergency response efforts, in the repair
- 12:02or rebuilding of damaged public facilities. The THEMA Public Assistance
- 12:07Program under the declaration d R DASH forty nine thirteen

- 12:33governments in certain non profit organizations recover costs associated with
- 12:39emergency protective measures, debris removal, and repairs to public infrastructure
- 12:45damage during a federally declared disaster. The January winter storm
- 12:50brought heavy snow, ice accumulation, and dangerously cold temperatures across

- 13:02and extensive recovery efforts. State officials reported the storm contributed
- 13:07to significant infrastructure and response calls throughout the affected region.
- 13:13This is critical support that will help Kentuckians recover and rebuild,
- 13:19said Governor Andy Basher in a statement on social media
- 13:23this past Sunday. Kentucky Emergency Management announced the approval in
- 13:28an update post on Monday, noting that the federal assistance

- 13:43seeks Singers for America sings by Macy Swofford Corbyn. As
- 13:49the nation prepares to celebrate its two hundred and fiftieth anniversary.
- 13:54Local choir director and composer Nick Hibbard is inviting singers
- 13:58from across the region to join a community chorus for
- 14:02a special patriotic concert later this month. The event, titled
- 14:07America Sings, will be Saturday, June twenty seventh at seven
- 14:13pm at the Central Baptist Church in Corbyn and is
- 14:17designed to honor two hundred and fifty years of American history, freedom,
- 14:22faith and unity through music. Hibbert, director of the choirs
- 14:28at Corbyn High School, said the project is about more
- 14:33than celebrating historic milestone. For me personally, this felt extremely
- 14:38important because this is an important milestone in our history,
- 14:43but also it feels like as Americans we are very
- 14:48divided right now. Hibberd said, I feel like a big
- 14:51problem today is that people don't sing together anymore. Choirs
- 14:56are one of the last places people come together and
- 14:59listen to each other for the purpose of creating something meaningful.
- 15:05The Community Choir is open to experienced singers, former choir members,
- 15:10church singers, music educators, students, and other community members. No
- 15:16audition is required. Hibbert said he hopes the event will
- 15:20bring together a large and diverse group of voices from
- 15:25throughout the region. I would love to have over one
- 15:29hundred singers, he said, In addition to directing choirs at
- 15:33Corbett High School, Hibbert is a published composer and a
- 15:37doctoral student at Liberty University. Rehearsals will be held at
- 15:42seven pm on June fourth, ninth, eleventh, sixteenth, eighteenth, twenty third,
- 15:49twenty fifth, and twenty six with final rehearsal scheduled for
- 15:53four point thirty pm on June twenty seventh before the
- 15:57evening performance. The concert is intended to serve as a

- 16:09of the power of music to bring people together. Those
- 16:13interested in participating can register through the online sign up

- 18:49May meeting. Williamsburg Whitley County Fiscal Court unanimously approved a
- 18:55series of resolutions, agreements, and funding measures during the US
- 19:00its May nineteenth meeting, with its officials highlighting concerns over
- 19:04declining road aid funding, emergency management reimbursements, and employee insurance costs.
- 19:12One of the major items approved was Resolution twenty twenty
- 19:17six dash O two, an agreement between Fiscal Court and
- 19:22the Commonwealth of Kentucky regarding FY twenty twenty seven County
- 19:28Road Aid Cooperative Agreement. Officials noted that County road aid
- 19:33funding is significantly lower than in previous years, despite increasing
- 19:39fuel prices. Judge Judge Executive Pat White Junior explained that
- 19:45while gas prices have risen, the government has frozen gas prices,
- 19:50limiting the amount of funding local governments received from road
- 19:54maintenance and infrastructure projects. White said the county is faced
- 20:00a two hundred and fifty three thousand dollars reduction in
- 20:04funding this year, adding that it will place a bit
- 20:08of pressure on road funds going forward, but this is
- 20:11what we've got. Magistrates also approved a contract between Fiscal
- 20:16Court and the Commonwealth of Kentucky pertaining to FY twenty
- 20:22twenty five EMA program funds. Emergency Management Director Jerry Rain
- 20:28said the funding comes through FEMA and supports the co
- 20:33County's emergency management program. Rains noted the grant operates on
- 20:40a two year cycle and is already running about a
- 20:43year behind schedule. Although FEMA reimbursements have not yet been received,
- 20:49Rain said Governor Andysheer has pledged that the state's general
- 20:53fund will cover the amount until FEMA reimburses the state.
- 21:00Proved amount totaled thirty eight thousand, three hundred eighty nine
- 21:04dollars in eighty four cents after corrections increased the original
- 21:10funding figure. The Court also approved an interlocal cooperative agreement
- 21:19between Whitley County Fiscal Court and Cumberland Valley Workforce Development Area.
- 21:25White said the county has participated in the workforce development
- 21:30for several years and that he has served as the
- 21:35region's chief local elected official for roughly the past year
- 21:40and a half to two years. Programs connected with this
- 21:45organization include training initiatives at the jail, including corporal training,
- 21:51as well as job fairs held in Corbyn area. Another
- 21:55major topic involved employee insurance coverage for the fiscal year
- 21:59to twenty six through twenty twenty seven. Magistrates approved health,
- 22:05life and dental insurance options after discussing whether to renew
- 22:09the county's current plan with Anthem pardon me or to
- 22:13move to an ultimate plan that would provide an estimated
- 22:16sixty three thousand dollars in savings. White said there were
- 22:20very few differences between the two plans and esteemed that
- 22:26way over ninety percent of employees would not be affected
- 22:30by the change. Under the proposal, employees could still purchase
- 22:35coverage comparable to the original plan for an estimated cost
- 22:40of about twenty one dollars and fifty cents per pay period.
- 22:44White also suggested the county could potentially use some of
- 22:49the savings to provide employees with a small raise while
- 22:53still maintaining current benefits. Fiscal Court additionally approved the twenty
- 23:00twenty six twenty twenty seven budget for the Whitley County
- 23:04Tourism Board. County Treasurer Nicholas Simpson and Construction said construction
- 23:10on a new county park is expected to be completed
- 23:14by men to late twenty twenty seven. Tourism funds also
- 23:19support community events including the County Fair, the Music and
- 23:24Mud Festival, and other activities throughout the county during this
- 23:30month Pardon me. During his monthly report, Rains described April
- 23:36as a pretty average month, though he noted emergency officials
- 23:41did respond to significant incident on Interstate seventy five that
- 23:46shut down southbound traffic near Exit eleven for approximately five
- 23:50to six hours. Rains also reported that the emergency management
- 23:55handle twenty eight missing person cases cases during April eight

- 24:05As of April thirtieth, officials have documented a total of
- 24:08sixty one missing person cases for the year, with one
- 24:12individual still missing at the end of the month. Rains
- 24:16later added that the total has now climbed to ninety
- 24:19one missing persons cases involving both Laurel and Whitley Counties.
- 24:25He said officials are beginning to notice patterns involving foster
