- 0:09Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
- 0:13Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:15Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:19Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:21Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:24Speaker 1: a hater. It is Thursdays with Deontay. Deontay Lee of
- 0:28Speaker 1: the Ringer. What's going on?
- 0:30Speaker 2: Good to be here, man. I'm glad to be able
- 0:32Speaker 2: to get in with you. I know we were trying
- 0:33Speaker 2: to get this lined up a couple of weeks ago
- 0:35Speaker 2: and got out the bed and just not feeling right.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Damn it, man. Glad to have.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Gone from doubtful to probable again. Y'all got up one
- 0:42Speaker 1: day and his neck was hurting.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Like my buddy Charles said, nobody used to have a
- 0:46Speaker 2: bad back. I got a lot of football injuries that
- 0:48Speaker 2: every once in a while want to remind me that
- 0:50Speaker 2: they happen and that I haven't dealt with them and
- 0:52Speaker 2: they're not going away until I do.
- 0:54Speaker 1: He hit us at an hour that was so early
- 0:56Speaker 1: that you know his neck was fucked up because he
- 0:58Speaker 1: shouldn't have been awake. Like that was not I'm awake
- 1:01Speaker 1: to let you guys know. That is while I'm awake.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Exactly. I'm not supposed to be awake and this has
- 1:07Speaker 2: forced me out of my bed. And I know when
- 1:09Speaker 2: I close my eyes again, I ain't getting back up.
- 1:11Speaker 2: So let me just let my guys know. that they
- 1:13Speaker 2: ain't going to see me today.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Well, look, we got a lot of NFL topics we
- 1:16Speaker 1: want to get to. We'll get to A.J. Brown a
- 1:17Speaker 1: little later. We'll get to Mike Vrabel a little later.
- 1:20Speaker 1: But first, the NFL draft Thursday night. I saw that
- 1:24Speaker 1: you did your evaluation of Fernando Mendoza, and I thought
- 1:29Speaker 1: the way you went about it was very interesting because
- 1:31Speaker 1: I say on my end that he's the number one
- 1:35Speaker 1: pick in this draft.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:37Speaker 1: He's not the number one pick in every draft, but
- 1:41Speaker 1: I'm not sure how that answers to what kind of
- 1:43Speaker 1: NFL quarterback that means that he would be. What did
- 1:47Speaker 1: you come back with?
- 1:48Speaker 2: Honestly, I had just been hung up over and over
- 1:51Speaker 2: again with, okay, so what does this trait mean in
- 1:54Speaker 2: an NFL context, right? It's very rare you get a
- 1:57Speaker 2: number one overall pick and you're haggling over, is this
- 2:00Speaker 2: enough arm strength? Is this enough mobility? Is this enough
- 2:04Speaker 2: processing of understanding coverages and knowing where to go with
- 2:07Speaker 2: the ball. Is this enough pocket management, right? Like with
- 2:10Speaker 2: Joe Burrow, I had some questions and then I went
- 2:12Speaker 2: back and watched and it was like, oh no, this
- 2:14Speaker 2: motherfucker is a wizard in the pocket. This is going
- 2:16Speaker 2: to work, right? Like he might not be Peyton Manning,
- 2:19Speaker 2: but he's doing a very kind of poor man's Peyton
- 2:21Speaker 2: Manning kind of impression in the pocket as far as
- 2:24Speaker 2: knowing what to do, how to avoid pressure and get
- 2:25Speaker 2: the ball out of his hands. I mean, we've seen
- 2:27Speaker 2: it work out in the league. I would say even
- 2:29Speaker 2: last year with Cam Ward, there are just some throws
- 2:31Speaker 2: that he would make or some decisions that he would make.
- 2:33Speaker 2: She would say, I'm not sure if you should make
- 2:35Speaker 2: that decision, but those are decisions that number one overall
- 2:38Speaker 2: picks make. Those are throws that number one overall picks make.
- 2:41Speaker 2: And I think that you saw enough athleticism and pure
- 2:43Speaker 2: arm strength to be able to kind of wrap your
- 2:45Speaker 2: head around that. I'm not saying that Fernando Mendoza doesn't
- 2:48Speaker 2: have a strong enough arm or doesn't have enough mobility,
- 2:51Speaker 2: but it's just so often I'm watching this film and
- 2:53Speaker 2: I'm like, I've heard Matt Ryan's name brought up and
- 2:56Speaker 2: I keep waiting for the Matt Ryan plays. I remember
- 2:59Speaker 2: Matt Ryan coming out of Boston College and it was
- 3:01Speaker 2: very clear that that was him and that Then Luke Keighley,
- 3:05Speaker 2: I lost to college after, but it was him and
- 3:06Speaker 2: a whole lot of just dudes. And he was finding
- 3:08Speaker 2: ways to win games. I don't know if I see
- 3:11Speaker 2: Fernando Mendoza as the same kind of engine of an
- 3:13Speaker 2: offense at the NFL level that people might see as
- 3:17Speaker 2: far as some of my buddies on the media space.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Well, I think it's an interesting question with him because
- 3:22Speaker 1: he's going to a very interesting quarterback division, right? Where,
- 3:27Speaker 1: I mean, we don't know what it'll mean that Patrick
- 3:31Speaker 1: Mahomes had a torn ACL, right? Like, I still think
- 3:33Speaker 1: that he'll be upper echelon quarterback in the NFL, but also,
- 3:37Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes is now going into his 10th season in
- 3:40Speaker 1: the NFL. Like, it's possible that we've seen the best
- 3:44Speaker 1: of him, which obviously doesn't mean he can't be very good, but...
- 3:48Speaker 1: The future for the Chiefs, hey, they have a quarterback
- 3:50Speaker 1: that's getting to the 30s and coming off a major injury.
- 3:55Speaker 1: I'm still not falling for that Bo Nix shit. I
- 3:57Speaker 1: know some people have and good for them. I'm still
- 4:00Speaker 1: not quite there. Justin Herbert, all the talent in the world,
- 4:03Speaker 1: but it still feels like maybe we're falling for that one. Yep.
- 4:07Speaker 1: But all the same, those are three talented quarterbacks in
- 4:10Speaker 1: the division. They needed a quarterback. The question is, what
- 4:15Speaker 1: level of quarterback do you need if you're going to
- 4:17Speaker 1: be the Raiders? If you're the Seahawks and you can
- 4:19Speaker 1: get pressure with four in the Super Bowl and don't
- 4:22Speaker 1: have to blitz people, then you can win it with
- 4:24Speaker 1: a Sam Darnold level of quarterback. The Raiders could be wrong, man.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I just don't feel like they're going to beat a
- 4:30Speaker 1: team to build a team around you where all your
- 4:32Speaker 1: quarterback has to do is be okay.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Well, and I think that's the terrible spot that the
- 4:37Speaker 2: Raiders find themselves in is that best case scenario, Clint
- 4:40Speaker 2: Kubiak continues to be a good play caller and Fernando
- 4:43Speaker 2: Mendoza turns out to be a good pro and you
- 4:45Speaker 2: still have the fourth best head coach and fourth best
- 4:48Speaker 2: quarterback in your division. That is entirely possible. And that's
- 4:52Speaker 2: not me saying that I'm a big Bo Nix fan,
- 4:54Speaker 2: but just what he can do. You can 100% see
- 4:56Speaker 2: a kid like him. I can't even say kid because
- 4:58Speaker 2: he left college so damn old, but you can see
- 5:00Speaker 2: a player like him being able to last in this
- 5:02Speaker 2: league a lot longer because of his mobility and some
- 5:05Speaker 2: of his raw arm talent than maybe a Mendoza will.
- 5:08Speaker 2: And that's not to say that I think that Mendoza
- 5:09Speaker 2: is going to fail, but I think that you can't
- 5:12Speaker 2: say with the same kind of certainty that you typically
- 5:14Speaker 2: would in a draft that your number one overall pick
- 5:17Speaker 2: is going to be here eight years from now, still
- 5:19Speaker 2: be a plus starter and be contributing to winning.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Yeah, this is. Let's say it doesn't work out for him.
- 5:26Speaker 1: We'll never know exactly why he go into the Raiders. Right.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Exactly. Exactly.
- 5:31Speaker 2: But you're still being owned by Mark Davis. You got
- 5:34Speaker 2: a first year head coach here. Your best football player
- 5:37Speaker 2: was out the door and got sent back home. Right.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Because some parts weren't right in the show. You know,
- 5:42Speaker 2: they didn't ship exactly what they said they were shipping.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:45Speaker 2: The Raven said, you know, like there's there's it's entirely
- 5:48Speaker 2: possible that this goes as well as it possibly can.
- 5:52Speaker 2: And you are still looking at a five and 12
- 5:53Speaker 2: team that's got to fire his coach and be right
- 5:56Speaker 2: back to picking in the top five of the draft
- 5:57Speaker 2: in a couple of years.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Hey, man, who's your guy in this draft? Not quarterback necessarily.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Just guy.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Can you have a guy in this draft?
- 6:05Speaker 1: I think that's what I'm hung up on. The love, dude.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I think Jeremiah Love will probably be my guy right
- 6:12Speaker 2: to the extent that I could have one in this draft.
- 6:14Speaker 2: And to me, I don't know if he's so good.
- 6:16Speaker 2: You can't claim him as your guy. The real thing is. OK.
- 6:19Speaker 1: OK. So you you want to feel special.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Exactly. You know, it needs to be me on an island. Right.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Like I think that for some of me and my
- 6:27Speaker 2: draft buddies, the flag that I'm planting right now is
- 6:30Speaker 2: probably on Caden McDonald. If you wanted like a deep
- 6:32Speaker 2: cut type of player. Because if you go look at
- 6:34Speaker 2: his college production, you're talking about 31 solo tackles as
- 6:37Speaker 2: a 330 pound nose tackle. And I'm writing, I'm working
- 6:40Speaker 2: on something now in terms of storylines going into the draft.
- 6:43Speaker 2: And one of the things that I was thinking about
- 6:45Speaker 2: is that if his production was pasted over on Jordan
- 6:49Speaker 2: Davis coming out of Georgia, Jordan Davis would have been
- 6:51Speaker 2: the third overall pick. I think that this is truly
- 6:54Speaker 2: just a brand name issue and the fact that he
- 6:56Speaker 2: was playing with other monsters on Ohio State's defense. But
- 7:00Speaker 2: you look at his production, his TFLs, his sacks, he
- 7:03Speaker 2: was more productive than Vita Vail was coming out of
- 7:05Speaker 2: Washington however long ago that was. And I don't feel
- 7:08Speaker 2: like people talk about Caden McDonald as potentially being one
- 7:11Speaker 2: of those game-wrecking forces on the interior. But that's kind
- 7:14Speaker 2: of where we're at in this draft, man. We're talking
- 7:16Speaker 2: about D-tackles, you know, about 24 hours, a little more
- 7:19Speaker 2: than 24 hours away from the start of day one.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Yeah, man, but I feel like There's an argument to
- 7:24Speaker 1: be made that this draft is going to fuck around
- 7:26Speaker 1: and get Ryan Day fired. Every time I look up
- 7:29Speaker 1: and somebody's talking about this draft, it's some Ohio State monster.
- 7:35Speaker 2: And it's the truth. It's the damn truth. And I
- 7:37Speaker 2: feel like the reason why they're not a two-time champion
- 7:40Speaker 2: is because of the guy playing quarterback. And I happened
- 7:42Speaker 2: to coach against that quarterback, and he was great in
- 7:44Speaker 2: high school, but I think that all the questions that
- 7:46Speaker 2: exist in terms of what he can be at the
- 7:48Speaker 2: college level and at the next level are totally valid.
- 7:51Speaker 2: And that ultimately is going to fall on on a
- 7:53Speaker 2: guy like Brian Day, and if they lose, and in
- 7:56Speaker 2: losing Brian Hartline, if they're not able to bring in
- 7:58Speaker 2: those dynamite wide receivers year over year and develop them
- 8:01Speaker 2: in the first round picks or top 15 picks, then
- 8:04Speaker 2: we might have to bring that conversation up again about
- 8:06Speaker 2: whether or not he's good enough to continue on as
- 8:08Speaker 2: Ohio State's head coach. A program that does not feel
- 8:11Speaker 2: good about winning 10 games, and it's probably the only one,
- 8:14Speaker 2: you know, north of the Mason-Dixon line that gets to
- 8:16Speaker 2: say that they can operate that way.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:19Speaker 1: So how rigid are you on, like, positional value when
- 8:22Speaker 1: it comes to the draft?
- 8:24Speaker 2: I would say it's not a guiding principle for me.
- 8:26Speaker 2: It can be a tiebreaker, but it's not a guiding
- 8:28Speaker 2: principle for me. And it's funny that we're talking about
- 8:30Speaker 2: Katie McDonald as a defensive tackle and Jeremiah Love as
- 8:33Speaker 2: a running back in that context. Because if you were
- 8:36Speaker 2: to draft Jeremiah Love, let's say third overall, because I
- 8:38Speaker 2: know that there's some smoke out there that Arizona might
- 8:40Speaker 2: be interested, he would be making more than Josh Jacobs
- 8:43Speaker 2: is making right now coming into the league. And that's
- 8:46Speaker 2: pretty rich, but I watch Jeremiah Love and I'm like,
- 8:49Speaker 2: why can't he be better than Josh Jacobs right now
- 8:52Speaker 2: in the league? Like, I think that It's aspirational to
- 8:55Speaker 2: draw this comp. And I think that maybe some people
- 8:57Speaker 2: who didn't watch Kansas City at the time might not
- 8:59Speaker 2: appreciate it. But I watched Jeremiah Love and I see
- 9:01Speaker 2: Jamal Charles. And if Jamal Charles was being dropped in
- 9:04Speaker 2: this draft right now, you would be talking about him
- 9:06Speaker 2: like he was going to be a top five, top
- 9:08Speaker 2: 10 pick. So like I said, it's not the end
- 9:11Speaker 2: all be all for me. I do think that you
- 9:13Speaker 2: have to weigh it. But ultimately, the shit that matters
- 9:15Speaker 2: is what's on tape. And Jeremiah Love is the best
- 9:18Speaker 2: player in this draft. And the only reason why he's
- 9:20Speaker 2: not going number one overall is because of the two
- 9:23Speaker 2: letters next to his name. and not what he is
- 9:25Speaker 2: as a football player.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Well, in line with that, are you surprised that the
- 9:29Speaker 1: Bengals were willing to give up the number 10 pick
- 9:31Speaker 1: in the draft to pay a defensive tackle $ 28 million
- 9:34Speaker 1: extra when you might have been able to get one
- 9:36Speaker 1: cheaper in this draft?
- 9:38Speaker 2: Surprised that Dexter Lawrence could go for that? No. Surprised
- 9:41Speaker 2: that Cincinnati would do that? Yes.
- 9:43Speaker 1: There you go.
- 9:44Speaker 2: I think that that's the real conversation, right, is that
- 9:47Speaker 2: they would give away a top 10 pick. You're assuming
- 9:50Speaker 2: that with a quarterback and two wide receivers, that should
- 9:52Speaker 2: be good enough to where you're not picking– in the
- 9:54Speaker 2: top 10 and that you would give that away for
- 9:56Speaker 2: a defensive tackle approaching 30 who wants to be paid, which.
- 10:00Speaker 2: I know Bengals fans were happy with me when I
- 10:01Speaker 2: tweeted it out a few days ago, but that sounds
- 10:03Speaker 2: very similar to an edge rusher who was approaching 30
- 10:06Speaker 2: a couple seasons ago, and looked around and said, where's
- 10:08Speaker 2: my guaranteed money? And Cincinnati said, your guaranteed money is
- 10:12Speaker 2: what we already paid you. You're going to play out
- 10:14Speaker 2: this contract, brother. All right?
- 10:16Speaker 1: Why are you asking questions you know the answer to, player?
- 10:18Speaker 2: Exactly. Why are you coming over here and tapping my pockets, dog?
- 10:21Speaker 2: You spent it. That's where your money is. You see
- 10:23Speaker 2: that house you're living in? You spent it. That car
- 10:26Speaker 2: you drove up in here? That's where your guaranteed money went.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Why are you talking to me?
- 10:29Speaker 3: All right?
- 10:30Speaker 1: So.
- 10:31Speaker 2: I think that that was a bigger shock for me,
- 10:33Speaker 2: but I do think that's instructive when we talk about
- 10:35Speaker 2: the draft in terms of, like, the way that these
- 10:37Speaker 2: picks are going to be moved is going to be
- 10:39Speaker 2: different than what we typically associate in terms of draft
- 10:42Speaker 2: pick value because teams are kind of, I think, acquiescent
- 10:45Speaker 2: to the fact that you're not going to find a
- 10:47Speaker 2: blue-chip prospect, I don't think, once you get outside of, like,
- 10:50Speaker 2: the top eight or so.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Where are you on Reuben Bain? And I ask that because, like,
- 10:57Speaker 1: it's 2026. His name is Reuben, and he play like
- 11:00Speaker 1: a Reuben. And the value of having him. That bro
- 11:02Speaker 1: looked like a Reuben too. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:05Speaker 2: He's like you.
- 11:06Speaker 1: With the great transcript, but the MSAT scores ain't really hitting, right?
- 11:09Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Everything that you see tells you he's going to be
- 11:12Speaker 1: a beast, except he measures poorly at maybe the place
- 11:16Speaker 1: most important, most people would say, for your defense, allow
- 11:18Speaker 1: me to measure, which is arm length. And he out here,
- 11:21Speaker 1: you know, he right here. You know what I'm saying?
- 11:24Speaker 1: He ain't got it. He ain't got it. He's Mr.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Potato Head when it comes to that part. Where would
- 11:28Speaker 1: you go with him?
- 11:30Speaker 2: I think once you're outside of that top eight-ish, I
- 11:33Speaker 2: think he's in play. I've been consistently mocking him in
- 11:36Speaker 2: the top five when we do these mock drafts, just
- 11:38Speaker 2: based off of what you hear from people around the
- 11:41Speaker 2: league and people who are tuned in to executives around
- 11:44Speaker 2: the league. But if it were me and my pick,
- 11:46Speaker 2: anytime you see that percentile and it's less than five
- 11:51Speaker 2: at any critical factor, and we're talking about, you know,
- 11:54Speaker 2: first percentile arm length for edge rushers, it is really
- 11:57Speaker 2: hard for me to look past that especially when you
- 12:00Speaker 2: think about what makes for a successful edge rusher in
- 12:02Speaker 2: the league. It's funny. I was listening yesterday to you
- 12:04Speaker 2: and Nate Tice talk about the 2011 draft and talk
- 12:07Speaker 2: about guys like Robert Quinn. And you guys started going
- 12:09Speaker 2: down memory lane to some of those other players that
- 12:11Speaker 2: we don't think about that have 100 plus sacks and
- 12:13Speaker 2: played for over a decade in the league. And that
- 12:16Speaker 2: arm length shows up because the moment that something goes
- 12:19Speaker 2: wrong with Reuben Bain, whether you're playing against an elite
- 12:21Speaker 2: tackle or you lose a step or you do suffer
- 12:24Speaker 2: an injury and now you don't have that great burst,
- 12:26Speaker 2: that great get off, Are you going to be able
- 12:28Speaker 2: to turn the corner on a Panay Sewell with first
- 12:30Speaker 2: percentile arm length? I'm not so certain. I'm just not
- 12:34Speaker 2: so certain. And to me, if you're talking to edge rushers,
- 12:36Speaker 2: I love who he is as a player. He's like
- 12:38Speaker 2: a Tasmanian devil in terms of fitting the run and
- 12:41Speaker 2: setting edges. But that don't get you paid top five
- 12:44Speaker 2: pick money. And if it were me, especially now with
- 12:47Speaker 2: all the news about the car accident and people in
- 12:50Speaker 2: the league can say whatever they want about what they
- 12:52Speaker 2: knew and what they're OK with. You're telling me you're
- 12:54Speaker 2: bringing in baggage, you got short arms, and I'm not
- 12:56Speaker 2: sure about exactly what your ceiling is going to be,
- 12:59Speaker 2: or that you might have to wait until we get
- 13:00Speaker 2: past pick 12 or something like that.
- 13:03Speaker 1: So if he was like 285 instead of 260, could
- 13:07Speaker 1: you think maybe you could move him inside and make
- 13:09Speaker 1: something happen? Absolutely. Like you kind of do with guards
- 13:11Speaker 1: and tackles on offense?
- 13:13Speaker 2: Absolutely, yeah. We were talking about a 285, 290-pound guy
- 13:15Speaker 2: who has short arms but played the way that he played.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Get ready to learn three technique, buddy. You ever watch
- 13:23Speaker 2: some Warren Sapp? You ever watch any of those guys?
- 13:29Speaker 2: Let's get you on the interior and talk about beating
- 13:32Speaker 2: some double teams and using that swim move on pass rushes.
- 13:36Speaker 2: That's where I would have him, and I don't think
- 13:37Speaker 2: that he's going to be able to play that way
- 13:38Speaker 2: in the league. And I think that if you're a
- 13:40Speaker 2: team that's drafting him, while you love the tape and
- 13:43Speaker 2: you can make an argument that he's the best edge
- 13:45Speaker 2: rusher coming into the class, I just don't know, man.
- 13:47Speaker 2: You're going to have a hard time convincing me that
- 13:49Speaker 2: this is going to work out when you look up three,
- 13:51Speaker 2: four years from now.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Hey, man, what's the story on this Jordan Tyson fella?
- 13:55Speaker 1: I had never heard of him. Now apparently everybody wants
- 13:57Speaker 1: to give him zillions of dollars.
- 13:59Speaker 2: My comparison for him is kind of like a Stefan
- 14:02Speaker 2: Diggs-esque receiver, right? Who is a number one receiver by name,
- 14:07Speaker 2: maybe not a number one wide receiver by the platonic
- 14:10Speaker 2: ideal of what you're thinking of, right? Because he's a
- 14:12Speaker 2: player you can feed targets to. He can play in
- 14:14Speaker 2: the slot. He can separate. I think his catch radius
- 14:17Speaker 2: is actually a lot better than what he gets credit for.
- 14:19Speaker 2: I think he gets knocked for injuries and you watch
- 14:22Speaker 2: some of the clips where he does get hurt on.
- 14:23Speaker 2: I think, especially at Colorado, I think that that clip's
- 14:25Speaker 2: gone around a bunch where he gets left hanging over
- 14:27Speaker 2: in the middle of the field and he gets absolutely smoked.
- 14:30Speaker 2: And I think that's where he tears up his knee.
- 14:32Speaker 2: I understand why some people might be concerned because you
- 14:34Speaker 2: don't just see this physically dominating type of prospect. You
- 14:38Speaker 2: don't see Jamar chase level ability after the catch, but man,
- 14:41Speaker 2: I watched that dude run routes and he's a better, he's,
- 14:44Speaker 2: He's what people thought Jerry Judy was supposed to be
- 14:46Speaker 2: coming out of Alabama is what I would say. If
- 14:49Speaker 2: I were to try to find a more recent comp,
- 14:51Speaker 2: I think that he is a better route runner than
- 14:53Speaker 2: Jerry Judy. I think his hands and his ball tracking
- 14:55Speaker 2: is a little bit better than Judy. And I think
- 14:57Speaker 2: that his ceiling is higher than a player like that
- 14:59Speaker 2: as well. I don't think that that makes him a
- 15:01Speaker 2: top five pick the way that people are talking about
- 15:03Speaker 2: the Giants being interested in him. But I do think
- 15:06Speaker 2: that he's the most talented receiver overall in this class.
- 15:09Speaker 1: I thought that Jerry Judy, now Henry Ruggs, obviously it
- 15:12Speaker 1: was something else. But I thought that that was the
- 15:15Speaker 1: best set of wide receivers I had ever seen on
- 15:17Speaker 1: a college team. I mean, Jaden Waddell, young Jaden Waddell nonetheless,
- 15:20Speaker 1: but he was the fourth one at one point, and
- 15:22Speaker 1: Devontae Smith was the third.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Right. And then Devontae Smith put up Jerry Rice numbers
- 15:29Speaker 2: in his last year at Alabama. And I don't think
- 15:31Speaker 2: that anybody would have projected that he was going to
- 15:33Speaker 2: be the guy out of that group to go do it.
- 15:35Speaker 2: They were so stacked. I mean, they just had Henry
- 15:37Speaker 2: Ruggs playing out there, damn near on the sideline to
- 15:39Speaker 2: the field, and hey, buddy, just go run deep. And
- 15:42Speaker 2: if we get one on one, we're going to throw
- 15:43Speaker 2: it to you deep. Right. That that's how they were
- 15:45Speaker 2: able to use their wide receivers. And that's not even
- 15:47Speaker 2: mentioned in the fact that they had Josh Jacobs playing
- 15:50Speaker 2: running back there at one point in time. And they
- 15:52Speaker 2: still had, you know, a Nick Saban defense. I might
- 15:54Speaker 2: not have been 2012 Nick Saban defense, but was still
- 15:58Speaker 2: good enough to go win you a title. So, yeah,
- 16:00Speaker 2: I think that I think that, again, you know, Tyson
- 16:03Speaker 2: could have fit in in that mode and been like
- 16:04Speaker 2: a Jerry Judah. And I think in the league he
- 16:06Speaker 2: can be a high end number two, low end number one.
- 16:09Speaker 2: type of option, just not a guy. Again, I feel
- 16:11Speaker 2: like I'm going to be a broken record today. Not
- 16:13Speaker 2: a guy I would want to base my job security
- 16:15Speaker 2: off of. If I'm Joe Shane and I'm getting fired anyway,
- 16:18Speaker 2: I ain't about to have a wide receiver picked in
- 16:20Speaker 2: the top five that ain't Julio Jones or A.J. Green
- 16:23Speaker 2: attached to my resume.
- 16:25Speaker 1: You know what, man? I can't even lie. That's a
- 16:27Speaker 1: good 15 minutes to talk about the draft. You know
- 16:29Speaker 1: what I'm saying? I feel like that's enough to justify
- 16:31Speaker 1: when we put it on YouTube and we say NFL
- 16:34Speaker 1: draft preview and they go ahead and click them. They
- 16:36Speaker 1: can feel like they got what they deserve. Because you
- 16:38Speaker 1: led us into what I consider to be a proper
- 16:41Speaker 1: segue since we got to talking about Devontae Smith, who
- 16:44Speaker 1: had been one of the best number two receivers in
- 16:46Speaker 1: the NFL. Apparently, he's about to be one of the
- 16:49Speaker 1: best number one receivers in the NFL. And that would
- 16:52Speaker 1: be because the Eagles, it sounds though, through all reporting,
- 16:56Speaker 1: are going to trade A.J. Brown after June 1st to
- 17:00Speaker 1: the New England Patriots. Now, we'll get to the Patriots
- 17:03Speaker 1: part of this in just a second. I had said
- 17:05Speaker 1: that I would believe that the Eagles were trading A.J.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Brown when I saw it because I just don't believe
- 17:12Speaker 1: that they're a bunch of losers. This seems so very
- 17:15Speaker 1: clearly to me to be a loser move because he
- 17:18Speaker 1: hasn't said anything that wasn't true, right? People have asked,
- 17:23Speaker 1: and I don't even think he's really been that much
- 17:24Speaker 1: of a jerk about it. The book on the sideline
- 17:26Speaker 1: I do think was going a little extra, but it's
- 17:28Speaker 1: not like he's out here insulting people. He hasn't shown
- 17:31Speaker 1: his quarterback up on the field or any of that stuff.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Maybe he just wanted out, right? And maybe I don't
- 17:37Speaker 1: know what the package is that they feel like they
- 17:39Speaker 1: can get back. I don't know why Buffalo, for what
- 17:40Speaker 1: it's worth, also wouldn't be trying to jump in this
- 17:42Speaker 1: just as hard as they were. But I will always
- 17:45Speaker 1: look at this as being an indictment of the Eagles
- 17:48Speaker 1: more than A.J. Brown if they really decide they're going
- 17:50Speaker 1: to get rid of somebody that good just because he's
- 17:52Speaker 1: telling y'all this shit ain't good enough.
- 17:55Speaker 2: It's so funny, man. I get berated by Eagles fans,
- 17:58Speaker 2: which is funny in its own right, right? Because I'm
- 18:00Speaker 2: in their community. You can't get rid of me. And
- 18:03Speaker 2: you can't make me hate this team. You can't hate
- 18:05Speaker 2: me any more than I hate this team sometimes, okay?
- 18:08Speaker 2: I am very much a spiritual Negadelfian, as they say. But, yeah,
- 18:13Speaker 2: I mean, to me, I think if you were to
- 18:14Speaker 2: lay out just a timeline of events, you're talking about
- 18:18Speaker 2: a guy being shipped out and wanting to be out
- 18:21Speaker 2: and being frustrated and the fans being frustrated with him
- 18:24Speaker 2: because after he won a Super Bowl, after a relatively
- 18:26Speaker 2: down offensive year, he came back to the locker room
- 18:29Speaker 2: and said, after I thought about it, I actually enjoy
- 18:32Speaker 2: just whooping a corner's ass more than holding up the
- 18:35Speaker 2: Lombardi trophy, which– I can't speak for fans, but for
- 18:38Speaker 2: me as a football person, that's the kind of wide
- 18:40Speaker 2: receiver I want. I need you to be unhinged enough
- 18:43Speaker 2: to operate on that kind of paradigm.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Not just operate on the paradigm. Say it out loud.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Exactly. After you won a championship.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Right, exactly. I now know for a fact this is
- 18:56Speaker 1: no longer speculation.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 18:58Speaker 1: I've done both. That other thing was cool.
- 19:01Speaker 2: It's better. It's just better. The trophy is nice. It's cool.
- 19:05Speaker 2: It's shiny. I see my reflection in it. I like
- 19:08Speaker 2: looking in a corner's eyes and this motherfucking knowing he
- 19:11Speaker 2: can't fuck with me at all. That brings me more joy.
- 19:14Speaker 2: That's the kind of wide receiver I want. And then
- 19:16Speaker 2: this year, you think about that gaming stream where he's
- 19:19Speaker 2: on Madden and he's talking about, you know, sounding like
- 19:21Speaker 2: a homeboy in the boondocks when he and Riley go
- 19:25Speaker 2: back to Chicago about struggle is up, brother. Hey, oppression
- 19:30Speaker 2: is up, brother. I'm not getting a rock. That's what
- 19:33Speaker 2: that's really what's going to make me happy here. And
- 19:35Speaker 2: I can't get my hands on it. And that he
- 19:37Speaker 2: was right, ultimately, about the design of the offense being
- 19:40Speaker 2: off over the last two years, that he was right
- 19:42Speaker 2: about the fact that good things happen when I get
- 19:44Speaker 2: the ball. And ultimately, I think that what happened here
- 19:47Speaker 2: is what typically happens with the team that just won
- 19:49Speaker 2: a title. Everybody, you know, kind of rallies around the
- 19:52Speaker 2: quarterback and the quarterback can do no wrong. And the
- 19:55Speaker 2: moment that that wide receiver drops a pass, the moment
- 19:57Speaker 2: that that wide receiver misses a block on a run,
- 20:00Speaker 2: the moment that wide receiver jogs on a route instead
- 20:02Speaker 2: of sprinting all the way through when the ball is
- 20:03Speaker 2: overthrown as a result, Now it's all that guy's fault.
- 20:06Speaker 2: And now he's got to go. And I'm right there
- 20:09Speaker 2: with you. I wouldn't have imagined that Philadelphia would be
- 20:11Speaker 2: the team to say, hey, we know you're the better
- 20:13Speaker 2: player in this drama. We know that we win championships
- 20:17Speaker 2: and compete for championships because of you. But this is
- 20:19Speaker 2: an untenable situation. We got to send you off to
- 20:21Speaker 2: another team that wants to win a championship because we
- 20:24Speaker 2: can't look at our quarterback. And maybe this is changing,
- 20:26Speaker 2: but we haven't been able to look at our quarterback
- 20:28Speaker 2: and our head coach and whatever offensive coordinator is in
- 20:31Speaker 2: the building and say, anytime he don't touch the ball,
- 20:33Speaker 2: it's y'all fault. And if he's got a problem with y'all,
- 20:37Speaker 2: we got a problem with y'all too.
- 20:39Speaker 1: So that's the thing that I also found interesting in
- 20:42Speaker 1: this is that that long ESPN report seemed to announce
- 20:48Speaker 1: to the world that the Eagles themselves find the Jalen
- 20:51Speaker 1: Hurts experience to be somewhat untenable, at least if it
- 20:53Speaker 1: continues at the rate at which it is going, right?
- 20:57Speaker 1: That's how they seem to feel about it. But they
- 20:59Speaker 1: still clearly decided, all right, ride this out, right? One
- 21:04Speaker 1: more year, you're going to be the one to do this. Okay.
- 21:10Speaker 1: And maybe you just decide that A.J. Brown at 29
- 21:12Speaker 1: years old, you don't know how long this will go,
- 21:14Speaker 1: so you can't stand to put up with one more
- 21:17Speaker 1: year of this discord or whatever it is that they
- 21:19Speaker 1: have in between them. I don't know. I feel like, though,
- 21:22Speaker 1: you're really putting your quarterback on the clock even more so. Like,
- 21:26Speaker 1: I haven't heard anything about what about if these two
- 21:28Speaker 1: fellas go, like, hang out for the weekend or something
- 21:31Speaker 1: like that. Like, maybe that's happened. Maybe there's been the
- 21:34Speaker 1: grand attempt to hash it out and we just haven't
- 21:36Speaker 1: found out about it. But the Eagles are going to
- 21:39Speaker 1: be worse for this. And I just don't feel like
- 21:41Speaker 1: they could be a team that's in the business of
- 21:43Speaker 1: getting worse.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Well, the report is one thing. And this is one
- 21:46Speaker 2: thing I really enjoy about Philadelphia is that they always
- 21:48Speaker 2: have some kind of drama. You know, there's always some
- 21:51Speaker 2: histrionics going on with the organization. But the great thing
- 21:54Speaker 2: about them is that they are easy to read because
- 21:56Speaker 2: Jeffrey Lurie speaks with his money. And if he believes
- 21:59Speaker 2: that you're a guy you can win a title with,
- 22:01Speaker 2: that extension gets done. If Howie Roseman believes that you're
- 22:04Speaker 2: a player that will help boost this team towards winning
- 22:06Speaker 2: a championship, the extensions get done early.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Right.
- 22:10Speaker 2: And it's for long term money. And they're willing to
- 22:12Speaker 2: do whatever cap games they need to to make the
- 22:14Speaker 2: math work out in the end. And it was very
- 22:16Speaker 2: telling to me that around the same time that report
- 22:18Speaker 2: came out, which is when owners meetings were happening. Somebody pulled,
- 22:22Speaker 2: you know, the reporters had Jeffrey Lurie to the side
- 22:24Speaker 2: and they were asking, hey, so what's going on with
- 22:27Speaker 2: Jalen's contract situation? We're planning to extend them. Right. And
- 22:30Speaker 2: that Jeffrey Lurie, excuse me, thought that you were talking
- 22:33Speaker 2: about Jalen Carter and not Jalen Hurts. Because Jalen Hurts'
- 22:37Speaker 2: money is not even a conversation right now.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Okay?
- 22:41Speaker 2: That's where I think heads are at in Philadelphia.
- 22:44Speaker 1: You say Jalen Carter, he's like, yeah, no brainer.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Right. Exactly. We got no problem with that. No, that
- 22:50Speaker 2: money is being worked on right now. True Rosenhouse is
- 22:52Speaker 2: on the other line. We're going to make that one work.
- 22:54Speaker 2: That other Jalen guy, hey, buddy, you're going to have
- 22:58Speaker 2: to make something shake if you want to get paid again.
- 23:00Speaker 2: And I think that if things don't go well this year,
- 23:03Speaker 2: the same way we got this report coming out before
- 23:05Speaker 2: the draft, I think we were going to hear it much,
- 23:07Speaker 2: much earlier, the same way we did with Carson Wentz
- 23:10Speaker 2: about a half decade ago, that people are starting to
- 23:12Speaker 2: get tired of whatever leadership, former leadership that Jalen is
- 23:16Speaker 2: putting out there, that they're tired and don't feel like
- 23:18Speaker 2: you can win a championship with this guy, that they
- 23:21Speaker 2: lost a number one wide receiver to another contender for it.
- 23:24Speaker 2: This is just the way things go. Ultimately, the best
- 23:27Speaker 2: thing about Philadelphia is that we're going to look up
- 23:29Speaker 2: in what is this six, eight months from now? And
- 23:33Speaker 2: it seems probably going to be nine and four, right?
- 23:36Speaker 2: Heading into the last month of the season and everybody's
- 23:38Speaker 2: going to be feeling great. But right now Jalen is
- 23:41Speaker 2: on the clock. And I think that he would be
- 23:42Speaker 2: wise to recognize that and to address some of the
- 23:44Speaker 2: things in that report that the team says that they
- 23:47Speaker 2: want to see from their quarterback going forward.
- 23:49Speaker 1: And the one thing he's got on his side though,
- 23:51Speaker 1: is the solution to Carson Wentz was taken Jalen Hurts in,
- 23:55Speaker 1: was it the third round, second round? I can't remember which. Yeah.
- 23:59Speaker 1: In 2020. what do they think they're going to do?
- 24:03Speaker 1: Todd Simpson, right? Like, like what is, what, what is,
- 24:05Speaker 1: what is the plan that leads you to the place?
- 24:08Speaker 1: Because otherwise I just don't know how readily and easily
- 24:11Speaker 1: you could just make the decision on what you're going
- 24:12Speaker 1: to do. Like, think about it. This says a lot
- 24:14Speaker 1: about this draft. The Arizona Cardinals do not have a
- 24:18Speaker 1: quarterback and we're hearing them talk about drafting a running
- 24:22Speaker 1: back running back in the top third overall pick.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Okay.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Like, whoa, that guy ain't there.
- 24:29Speaker 2: I think the drama starts. if the Eagles trade up
- 24:33Speaker 2: to go get a guy like Garrett Nussmeier in the
- 24:35Speaker 2: second or third round, right? If you see them put
- 24:38Speaker 2: some of that draft capital on the line to go
- 24:40Speaker 2: bring in another backup quarterback, because they already have three
- 24:43Speaker 2: on the roster, as is that plan that will be
- 24:46Speaker 2: on the active roster after they went and traded for
- 24:48Speaker 2: Andy Dalton. So if they go out and they bring
- 24:49Speaker 2: in a guy like Nussmeier, whose dad was a quarterback's
- 24:52Speaker 2: coach here a couple of years ago in Philadelphia. So
- 24:56Speaker 2: they've done a lot of background. They know the guy
- 24:57Speaker 2: very well. He was on the sideline for the Super
- 25:00Speaker 2: Bowl that they won in New Orleans. That's where I
- 25:02Speaker 2: think you start to see them maybe just looking over
- 25:05Speaker 2: the horizon and seeing what the next era might look
- 25:09Speaker 2: like in case they do have to make a move
- 25:10Speaker 2: on their current quarterback.
- 25:12Speaker 1: All right. Coming up next, the possibility is that A.J.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Brown may go to the Patriots. But that's not what
- 25:20Speaker 1: we're going to talk about.
- 25:20Speaker 2: That ain't what we're talking about at all.

- 28:28Speaker 1: All right, we're back on with Deontay Lee from Duranger.
- 28:32Speaker 1: I will say this, though, that A.J. Brown trade, if
- 28:34Speaker 1: the Patriots do make that one, you guys will get better, right?
- 28:38Speaker 1: Like this is, regardless of what anybody else thinks about A.J. Brown,
- 28:43Speaker 1: clearly he's Mike Vrabel's kind of guy, right? Vrabel has,
- 28:46Speaker 1: I am sure that A.J. Brown is easier to deal
- 28:49Speaker 1: with now than he was when he was young. Just
- 28:51Speaker 1: know how people work. That's probably the case. So he
- 28:54Speaker 1: got a different version of him that was not experiencing
- 28:57Speaker 1: nearly the same level of team success that this other
- 29:00Speaker 1: one was. And he's still like not as kind of
- 29:01Speaker 1: guy we need in this building.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Absolutely. And I want to pair my young quarterback who
- 29:07Speaker 2: looked like a deer in the headlights in the playoffs
- 29:09Speaker 2: with this personality. This is not typically what people in
- 29:12Speaker 2: the league would say they want to pair their young
- 29:14Speaker 2: quarterback with. It says a lot about Mike Bray would say, yeah,
- 29:16Speaker 2: bring all that quote unquote bullshit over here. I know
- 29:19Speaker 2: what to do with this guy. He was fine when
- 29:21Speaker 2: he was with me, right? That is very, I think,
- 29:23Speaker 2: maybe appreciate to talk about relationships in this regard, but
- 29:26Speaker 2: this is very much a, oh, I know this headache.
- 29:28Speaker 2: I know exactly how to deal with this headache.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Yeah, he's like, look, maybe your hand ain't strong like mine.
- 29:32Speaker 1: You know what I mean? You can't hold this down.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Mine answer the phone when I call. Look, A.J. Brown,
- 29:37Speaker 1: to me, even if he's not necessarily the best receiver,
- 29:42Speaker 1: there's something to be said for a dude, what do
- 29:44Speaker 1: you call himself, always open. He really is, though. Like
- 29:47Speaker 1: the Anquan Bolton archetype of, look, man, just throw it
- 29:50Speaker 1: over here, dog. I'll work it out.
- 29:52Speaker 2: I don't want to hear none of that coverage bullshit.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Don't tell me where the safety was at.
- 29:55Speaker 1: All right.
- 29:56Speaker 2: Did you see me? If you saw number 11, then
- 29:59Speaker 2: that's where the ball is supposed to be going.
- 30:01Speaker 3: Right.
- 30:01Speaker 1: That's it. And that I can't imagine how reassuring that
- 30:05Speaker 1: is for a young quarterback. Like you are probably too
- 30:07Speaker 1: young to remember this, but young Brett Favre had Sterling
- 30:12Speaker 1: Sharp and Sterling Sharp suffered the neck injury right before
- 30:15Speaker 1: it really blew up. Charlie Sharp had a year. We
- 30:17Speaker 1: had something like 130, 140 catches. And it was clear
- 30:20Speaker 1: that Brett Favre, who did not know what a nickel
- 30:23Speaker 1: defense was when he got to the NFL, he was
- 30:25Speaker 1: obviously not out there doing no quantum physics, man. He
- 30:28Speaker 1: was like, I'm throwing it to the dude that's always open.
- 30:31Speaker 3: Period.
- 30:32Speaker 2: That's a fact. That's a fact. I mean, I think
- 30:34Speaker 2: about Julio. That is exactly how I think about Julio Jones.
- 30:37Speaker 2: Is Matt Ryan new? Progression is great. What Kyle Shanahan
- 30:41Speaker 2: called through my helmet is awesome. What I want to
- 30:45Speaker 2: do is going to find that big transformer-looking motherfucker standing
- 30:49Speaker 2: on the outside. And the moment that it looks like
- 30:52Speaker 2: he's got a half a stride on a guy, that
- 30:54Speaker 2: ball is going in his direction, and I'm not going
- 30:56Speaker 2: to think twice about it.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Brother, Matthew Stafford had seven years of trading wheel passes.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Just throw the ball to Calvin Johnson. I am sure
- 31:06Speaker 1: he will know what to do.
- 31:08Speaker 2: I can't go wrong. You know the saying, can't go
- 31:10Speaker 2: broke taking a profit, man. I cannot go wrong getting
- 31:13Speaker 2: the ball to this dude out there.
- 31:15Speaker 1: But the thing with the Patriots, though, let's find out
- 31:18Speaker 1: how good they really are, right? Because they're not.
- 31:21Speaker 2: If I'm being honest, they weren't.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Yeah, they had a couple of decent breaks.
- 31:26Speaker 2: I think, and decent is an understatement, right? I think C.J.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Shroud had a rough end to the season overall, but
- 31:33Speaker 2: five turnovers to get you to the AFC title game.
- 31:36Speaker 2: You could do a lot worse as a quarterback than
- 31:38Speaker 2: being able to sit on the ball because your opponent
- 31:40Speaker 2: is handing it away over and over again. not having
- 31:43Speaker 2: to see Bo Nix for all the frustrations that I
- 31:45Speaker 2: have with him as a player, not having to see
- 31:47Speaker 2: him at all, and then being able to play in
- 31:50Speaker 2: the weather, that's a great advantage to have as a
- 31:52Speaker 2: second-year quarterback. And this is just an offense that just
- 31:55Speaker 2: really wasn't all that great throughout the postseason, right? They
- 31:58Speaker 2: couldn't run the ball. They were very predictable running the ball.
- 32:00Speaker 2: And Drake May, I think week by week, which is
- 32:03Speaker 2: probably the most amazing thing to me about that playoff run,
- 32:06Speaker 2: you can make an argument that every time we saw
- 32:08Speaker 2: him on Sunday, he was a worse version of himself
- 32:10Speaker 2: than he was the week before. He's got progressively worse,
- 32:14Speaker 2: and I think that ultimately you need a guy like A.J. Brown,
- 32:16Speaker 2: I think, to be able to get a player like
- 32:18Speaker 2: Drake May out of his head when he can't tell
- 32:21Speaker 2: what defenses are doing or when he's trying to hold
- 32:22Speaker 2: the ball too long to try to push it downfield.
- 32:25Speaker 2: It feels very good to see a linebacker-sized human being
- 32:29Speaker 2: on that post route running right down the middle of
- 32:31Speaker 2: the field.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Well, I had mentioned that I thought that Buffalo needs
- 32:34Speaker 1: to make a run at this, and I think it's
- 32:35Speaker 1: interesting because Buffalo is in one of those weird years
- 32:41Speaker 1: where It was clear to me that Sean McDermott was
- 32:44Speaker 1: on the clock for this year. Apparently it wasn't clear
- 32:47Speaker 1: to anybody else, but the truth is they still got
- 32:50Speaker 1: to the divisional round of the playoffs. They had a
- 32:52Speaker 1: classic Buffalo ending of the season, but it was not
- 32:55Speaker 1: enough to save Sean McDermott's job. Now, granted, I think
- 32:58Speaker 1: McDermott had his time. I don't think they did him wrong,
- 33:00Speaker 1: but that is still telling everybody else that you're on
- 33:03Speaker 1: the clock here, including you first year head coach. you're
- 33:07Speaker 1: on the clock and starting off on the clock. Cause
- 33:10Speaker 1: you were, you was part of the problem, buddy. You
- 33:12Speaker 1: was here when we weren't getting it done. We are
- 33:14Speaker 1: clearly saying he's what's wrong and you're going to be
- 33:17Speaker 1: what's right. And if he ain't what's right, buddy.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Listen, they had to go back and try to clarify
- 33:22Speaker 2: the record because their owner came out and said that
- 33:26Speaker 2: coaching staff that brought in Keon Coleman as a wide
- 33:28Speaker 2: receiver is their fault that we don't have a number
- 33:31Speaker 2: one receiver in this room. And then they had to
- 33:33Speaker 2: go in the back room and be like, Hey, Oh yeah,
- 33:35Speaker 2: that's right. We're hiring the guy. off of that same staff,
- 33:38Speaker 2: the guy who was calling plays for this offense. He
- 33:41Speaker 2: is going to be our head coach and was part
- 33:42Speaker 2: of that decision-making process. So let's actually end up throwing
- 33:46Speaker 2: Sean McDermott a little bit further under the bus because
- 33:48Speaker 2: we're probably starting this off on the wrong foot. But
- 33:50Speaker 2: I do think, I'm surprised, you bringing them up, I'm
- 33:53Speaker 2: surprised that they went for DJ Moore instead of dealing
- 33:56Speaker 2: a first-round pick or whatever it would have taken to
- 33:58Speaker 2: go get an A.J. Brown. Because I absolutely would have
- 34:01Speaker 2: much rather have had Brown if I'm Josh Allen. I
- 34:05Speaker 2: went from Stephon Diggs, who was his own Head case,
- 34:08Speaker 2: so to speak. And now you're bringing in a guy
- 34:10Speaker 2: whose lasting memory in Chicago is him. I don't like
- 34:14Speaker 2: using a Q word, but maybe making a decision to
- 34:17Speaker 2: take himself out of the progression on that last interception
- 34:20Speaker 2: that Caleb Williams threw. And now I'm going to entrust
- 34:23Speaker 2: the entire passing game being built around that guy. When
- 34:26Speaker 2: I could have had the dude who was going to
- 34:28Speaker 2: throw an attitude if I don't get the ball, because
- 34:31Speaker 2: if you get me the ball on a slant, I'm
- 34:32Speaker 2: going to be throwing these DBs off me like I'm
- 34:35Speaker 2: like I'm, you know, Orlando Brown size playing against some
- 34:38Speaker 2: private school kids.
- 34:39Speaker 1: Right.
- 34:39Speaker 2: That's what I look like out on the perimeter. I
- 34:41Speaker 2: think that they would have been much better off getting
- 34:43Speaker 2: a guy like him. And now they might have to
- 34:44Speaker 2: face off against him twice in a division.
- 34:47Speaker 1: And then that becomes the next part. Now you have
- 34:49Speaker 1: to deal with him. Because you're right, going to get
- 34:51Speaker 1: DJ Morris, that's bargain shopping. Like, if it was that
- 34:54Speaker 1: clear to everybody else that A.J. Brown's going to be
- 34:56Speaker 1: in the market, I don't think you immediately go settle
- 34:59Speaker 1: with the bargain shop. And now maybe this is also
- 35:00Speaker 1: partially because if A.J. Brown wants to go to the Patriots,
- 35:03Speaker 1: then you don't want him... If he wants to go
- 35:07Speaker 1: to the Patriots, that means he doesn't want to go
- 35:08Speaker 1: to the Bills, right? Right. Maybe that's the argument that
- 35:11Speaker 1: you make, which I don't think is implausible because he
- 35:13Speaker 1: does not suffer silently, but it appears that he will
- 35:16Speaker 1: not be suffering if you just throw him the ball.
- 35:18Speaker 1: And I could be wrong, but Josh Allen seems like
- 35:21Speaker 1: the sort of dude who likes those kinds of guys.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Every time he's had a guy who's wanted the ball,
- 35:26Speaker 2: you know what happened? They got the ball a whole
- 35:28Speaker 2: goddamn lot.
- 35:29Speaker 1: All right.
- 35:29Speaker 2: He gave the ball to Stephon Diggs so damn much.
- 35:31Speaker 2: I wasn't sure he had anything left in his legs
- 35:33Speaker 2: when he was leaving Buffalo. It just looked like he
- 35:35Speaker 2: couldn't run anymore after getting hundreds upon hundreds of targets.
- 35:39Speaker 2: And yeah, I think that a guy like Josh Allen
- 35:40Speaker 2: absolutely wants to throw to a guy like that instead
- 35:43Speaker 2: of these two tight ends. I mean, it's nice having
- 35:45Speaker 2: Dawson Knox. It's nice, you know, to have a Khalil
- 35:48Speaker 2: Shakir as a slot receiver, undersized guy who can go
- 35:52Speaker 2: create after the catch. I want a dude who's going
- 35:54Speaker 2: to be lifting with me when we're in the weight room.
- 35:56Speaker 2: That's what I want to throw to. I want to
- 35:58Speaker 2: take my shirt off and him take his shirt off
- 36:00Speaker 2: and we both look like we've been doing the same
- 36:01Speaker 2: thing all offseason. That's how Josh Allen strikes me. as
- 36:05Speaker 2: a football player.
- 36:07Speaker 1: Hey, man. Did you see that press conference Mike Vrabel did?
- 36:11Speaker 2: I saw bits and pieces. Anytime I see the I
- 36:16Speaker 2: had tough conversations quotes, I got to be honest, my
- 36:19Speaker 2: eyes immediately start glazing.
- 36:21Speaker 1: Immediately start glazing over. So for people who don't know
- 36:24Speaker 1: about this, Mike Vrabel had been photographed at a resort
- 36:29Speaker 1: with a woman named Diana Rossini, who is an NFL
- 36:33Speaker 1: insider and has since resigned from her position at her
- 36:36Speaker 1: job for a whole host of reasons right we had
- 36:40Speaker 1: talked about this on the show if you don't remember
- 36:42Speaker 1: it's the one when me and Dominique was talking about
- 36:44Speaker 1: how they was interlocking fingers right okay um I've seen
- 36:50Speaker 1: a lot of people make the point about how it's
- 36:52Speaker 1: a double standard because Diana has to suffer consequences and
- 36:55Speaker 1: Mike Vrabel does not. And the truth is they do
- 36:57Speaker 1: different jobs and they answer to different people. This isn't
- 37:02Speaker 1: how double standards work because I assure you if people
- 37:04Speaker 1: thought Adam Schefter was fucking Mike Vrabel, it would be
- 37:07Speaker 1: a thing. It's not quite that. People want the world
- 37:13Speaker 1: to be fair. And in this situation, there's one person
- 37:16Speaker 1: that Mike Vrabel has to answer to in this. And
- 37:19Speaker 1: her last name is also Vrabel. And I got the
- 37:22Speaker 1: feeling that he has begun to do some answering to
- 37:24Speaker 1: her because Diana's responses to this have had an air
- 37:27Speaker 1: of defiance. And Mike Vrabel got up talking about all
- 37:30Speaker 1: these tough conversations that he's had. And he had to
- 37:34Speaker 1: come and he had to talk to the team about it.
- 37:37Speaker 1: And it's a personal matter and all of these things.
- 37:40Speaker 1: He tried to offer some measure of contrition while also
- 37:44Speaker 1: not saying anything about what exactly it was that he
- 37:48Speaker 1: was talking about. And what I found somewhat stunning than
- 37:51Speaker 1: it was not really stunning because I've been doing this
- 37:53Speaker 1: job for a while, but people allowed for this.
- 37:57Speaker 2: Right.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Right. He got up there and talked for all that time,
- 38:01Speaker 1: but never said what it is that he was talking about.
- 38:05Speaker 1: And I wish there had been one person that would
- 38:07Speaker 1: have raised their hand and been like, Hey man, I
- 38:10Speaker 1: gotta be honest with you, man. I've been out of
- 38:12Speaker 1: the country for like, three weeks. I have no idea
- 38:16Speaker 1: what it is that you're talking about. What were these
- 38:20Speaker 1: tough conversations about? Who were you? Why did you have
- 38:23Speaker 1: to tell the team? Could you just run that five minutes?
- 38:26Speaker 2: Why are you referencing your family?
- 38:27Speaker 1: The draft is in a couple days.
- 38:30Speaker 2: Why are we talking about the home life? I need
- 38:32Speaker 2: to understand exactly what's going on here.
- 38:34Speaker 1: Yeah, like somebody could artistly just be like, no, what? Guys,
- 38:37Speaker 1: what is it? I don't know. No, no, tell me. Like,
- 38:42Speaker 1: I feel left out, man, because somebody tell me exactly
- 38:45Speaker 1: what it is. And then another person around the room
- 38:46Speaker 1: would be like, he got caught with Diana at a
- 38:51Speaker 1: resort before the owner's meeting. You didn't hear anything about that? Mike,
- 38:55Speaker 1: that's what happened, right? It was you and Diana at
- 38:57Speaker 1: the owner's meeting? Was that what it was? Like, that
- 39:00Speaker 1: was what I wanted. Like, there's no way. If you
- 39:03Speaker 1: want to raise the question as to whether or not
- 39:05Speaker 1: he had to answer for it, that's on you. I
- 39:07Speaker 1: think it was impossible for him not to. But once
- 39:10Speaker 1: he did it, it's time to make it hard. Right. Right.
- 39:13Speaker 1: Once he did, it is time to make this difficult.
- 39:16Speaker 2: Well, and I think to that point, they just had
- 39:19Speaker 2: a press conference less than a week ago with the
- 39:21Speaker 2: GM where the head coach was auspiciously not there. okay
- 39:27Speaker 2: and they weren't taking questions about anything that had to
- 39:29Speaker 2: do with the head coach and the only quote we
- 39:31Speaker 2: got about the head coach was how involved he was
- 39:33Speaker 2: in the drafting process i thought that that was the
- 39:36Speaker 2: statement i thought that was new england doing the new
- 39:38Speaker 2: england thing and saying, hey, if you want to talk
- 39:40Speaker 2: to the people who are here about what we want
- 39:42Speaker 2: to talk to you about, that's it, and we're moving
- 39:44Speaker 2: forward from there. And for this to be done from
- 39:47Speaker 2: what seems like, from what I can track, was not
- 39:50Speaker 2: very widely announced, right? I don't think that this was
- 39:54Speaker 2: a very prepared thing that Mike Rabel was going to do.
- 39:57Speaker 2: I don't think that the Patriots organization had some master
- 40:00Speaker 2: plan where they were going to stagger out when people
- 40:03Speaker 2: were going to be available. And Mike Redwood don't strike
- 40:06Speaker 2: me as a man that in many phases of his
- 40:07Speaker 2: life has to walk into a door, hat in hand,
- 40:10Speaker 2: soft voiced, right? Shoulders slouched. He don't strike me as
- 40:14Speaker 2: that kind of person. And just seeing, seeing that besides
- 40:17Speaker 2: seeing him up at the podium, looking that way. I
- 40:19Speaker 2: was like, oh man, like you said, I think the
- 40:21Speaker 2: much tougher press conference, the much tougher questions were happening
- 40:25Speaker 2: behind the door that we can't get through. Okay. And
- 40:27Speaker 2: I would love to have been party to that combo.
- 40:29Speaker 1: They could not allow the first time that he spoke
- 40:31Speaker 1: to the media to be after they made draft picks.
- 40:34Speaker 3: Right.
- 40:35Speaker 1: That wasn't an option. They had to get it out
- 40:38Speaker 1: of there. You're right. Something has led Diana to believe
- 40:45Speaker 1: that she could continue to take that approach that she
- 40:47Speaker 1: was taking. Somebody was believing it. Nobody believed it when
- 40:54Speaker 1: Mike Vrabel tried it.
- 40:56Speaker 2: I want to word this properly because this is all
- 41:00Speaker 2: happening for a A former employer of mine, and I
- 41:04Speaker 2: have a lot of people over there that I have
- 41:06Speaker 2: a lot of respect for. I will say the first
- 41:10Speaker 2: 24 hours or so in the wake of that news
- 41:12Speaker 2: breaking and seeing big bosses, the kind of names that
- 41:17Speaker 2: you can't add to a direct message on your Slack
- 41:19Speaker 2: to get in touch with are coming out being very
- 41:24Speaker 2: puffed out chest and very sure that my employee is
- 41:28Speaker 2: going to be vindicated in this. And then to see
- 41:30Speaker 2: the reporting after the fact, which- All I can ask is,
- 41:34Speaker 2: what did you think was going to happen? You said
- 41:36Speaker 2: you were doing one thing. And then your boss comes
- 41:38Speaker 2: back and says, can you show me anybody that can
- 41:42Speaker 2: corroborate this one thing that you're saying was happening and
- 41:45Speaker 2: you don't have any evidence? I think we've all worked
- 41:48Speaker 2: jobs where we tried to say that we had to
- 41:50Speaker 2: miss work because of whatever circumstance. And we knew if
- 41:53Speaker 2: we got pushed to provide some kind of proof on
- 41:55Speaker 2: that measure, we would have been in some hot water.
- 41:58Speaker 1: Where is your doctor's note?
- 42:00Speaker 2: Okay?
- 42:01Speaker 1: Okay? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Flu bug. Flu bug.
- 42:05Speaker 2: We get it. Yeah, uh-huh. That affects everybody the same.
- 42:08Speaker 2: I want to see letterhead from whatever your medical group
- 42:12Speaker 2: in your local area saying that this is why you
- 42:14Speaker 2: can't be here. And the fact that you weren't.
- 42:15Speaker 1: Able to provide that. Could you please bring me a
- 42:16Speaker 1: program from your grandmother's funeral?
- 42:18Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 42:19Speaker 1: I didn't take one with y'all?
- 42:22Speaker 2: Damn, is that a flat itinerary?
- 42:23Speaker 1: Is that a newspaper, perhaps?
- 42:25Speaker 2: I need some kind of notification the flights were canceled.
- 42:27Speaker 2: I was watching the morning news. It ain't look like
- 42:30Speaker 2: no inclement weather to me when I was getting in
- 42:32Speaker 2: my car this morning. Okay?
- 42:34Speaker 1: No, it did not go, but she wrote that out.
- 42:38Speaker 1: I don't think Mike Vrabel got as far with that
- 42:41Speaker 1: story as she had. Mike Vrabel tried to walk in
- 42:44Speaker 1: with the, well, you know. And them arms got folded.
- 42:48Speaker 1: And he folded right after, right? Like nobody, nobody even
- 42:54Speaker 1: tried to believe him. In fact, Diana might have been
- 42:56Speaker 1: better off if nobody had believed her in the first place.
- 42:59Speaker 2: That's really the thing, right? I think she tried to
- 43:01Speaker 2: take the Eddie Murphy, the Eddie Murphy raw response. Wasn't me, okay?
- 43:08Speaker 2: Wasn't me. You did not see me. And it seems
- 43:10Speaker 2: like maybe Mike did try that. And like you said,
- 43:13Speaker 2: I think that he probably got halfway through whatever explanation
- 43:15Speaker 2: he was going through and made eye contact with who
- 43:18Speaker 2: he was delivering that message to and realized very quickly,
- 43:21Speaker 2: this ain't going to land in this audience.
- 43:23Speaker 1: I'm going to have to fix what I'm saying.
- 43:24Speaker 3: No, no, no, no.
- 43:24Speaker 1: His house, it wasn't going to land. And then before us,
- 43:26Speaker 1: I think the thing is, truthfully, there's no great explanation
- 43:30Speaker 1: for why it matters on our end. I've seen people
- 43:32Speaker 1: try to make the argument, well, maybe Mike Vrabel's been
- 43:35Speaker 1: tampering and telling that reporter too much. That's the game. Like,
- 43:39Speaker 1: the game is people telling and not telling truth. Regardless
- 43:44Speaker 1: of what it is in ways that serves them, right?
- 43:46Speaker 1: It's a big old game of liar's poker in that way.
- 43:48Speaker 1: Everybody's doing a little here, not doing a little there,
- 43:50Speaker 1: whatever it is. If you want to make a morals
- 43:53Speaker 1: clause argument that Mike Vrabel has embarrassed the operation, which
- 43:57Speaker 1: he most certainly did, Then you can do that again.
- 44:00Speaker 1: As I said before, the problem is the man that
- 44:03Speaker 1: can't say nothing to him about it is buddy from
- 44:05Speaker 1: the massage parlor. He don't get to come in here
- 44:08Speaker 1: and start making that sort of noise to my rebel.
- 44:10Speaker 1: So there's nothing. So therefore, he comes out here and
- 44:12Speaker 1: talks all this stuff. And the media guys are like, well, actually,
- 44:15Speaker 1: we don't really have anything to gain from this because
- 44:17Speaker 1: they're no real. consequences that are going to come from
- 44:20Speaker 1: asking these questions. Therefore, nobody asked the questions, but I
- 44:25Speaker 1: just wish one messy person would have got in there.
- 44:28Speaker 1: Like one TMZ mole would have snuck in and be like, Hey, Hey, Hey,
- 44:33Speaker 1: John Jackson, TMZ. Are you talking about when you were
- 44:37Speaker 1: with that woman that you're not married to guys, is
- 44:41Speaker 1: that what he's talking about? I can't really tell. Like,
- 44:44Speaker 1: is this how these work here? You just let people
- 44:45Speaker 1: be unclear like this.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Somebody had to point it out to me because I
- 44:49Speaker 2: didn't really realize it when the story broke that they
- 44:53Speaker 2: were two hours away from Phoenix. Okay. Sedona and Phoenix,
- 44:58Speaker 2: nice little drive away from each other. Okay. That's me
- 45:04Speaker 2: in San Diego going to LA. Okay.
- 45:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:06Speaker 2: And if I was in LA doing something untoward. And
- 45:09Speaker 2: I told my lady and everybody else that I was
- 45:12Speaker 2: actually in San Diego the entire time because of some
- 45:15Speaker 2: event that was happening in San Diego. And there was
- 45:17Speaker 2: pictures of me down in Englewood. There's no explanation. I'm
- 45:21Speaker 2: not supposed to be. You got me. Okay.
- 45:23Speaker 1: There's no.
- 45:24Speaker 2: You got me.
- 45:25Speaker 1: Your best bet is to start off in surrender mode, right?
- 45:28Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 45:29Speaker 1: We are down by three touchdowns with a minute left.
- 45:35Speaker 1: We could keep dropping back in passing. Or we could
- 45:40Speaker 1: kneel it out so that LT doesn't come around the
- 45:43Speaker 1: edge and break my back.
- 45:45Speaker 2: Listen, it was absurd when it happened, but I understood.
- 45:48Speaker 2: And you're in New York, so I'm sure you can
- 45:50Speaker 2: remember this. When Joe Judge was backed up to the
- 45:52Speaker 2: one-yard line with a horrible offense, he had to do
- 45:56Speaker 2: some calculus on.
- 45:57Speaker 1: And he put it on third down.
- 45:58Speaker 2: Yes, and took them two knees late in the game.
- 46:03Speaker 2: Or those two quarterback sneaks late in the game. You
- 46:05Speaker 2: have to do some calculus on. Yes, I could pass
- 46:08Speaker 2: the ball. We could run some real offense here and
- 46:10Speaker 2: try to get out of the shadow of our own
- 46:11Speaker 2: end zone. Or I can just get the hell out
- 46:14Speaker 2: of here. I don't want to be at MetLife no more.
- 46:17Speaker 2: They don't want to look at me no more either.
- 46:19Speaker 2: Let's just do what we got to do to get
- 46:22Speaker 2: on and move on with our lives.
- 46:23Speaker 1: I think, though, the biggest statement on what sports media is,
- 46:27Speaker 1: is the fact that he could get away with that.
- 46:29Speaker 2: 100%.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Or the fact that it even happened in the first place.
- 46:32Speaker 1: Like it says so much about what we do that
- 46:34Speaker 1: isn't fully serious, but kind of has the potential to
- 46:37Speaker 1: be serious. But in the end, nobody wants to get
- 46:39Speaker 1: boxed out. So nobody was going to be the person.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Like I wish there was like one person or like
- 46:44Speaker 1: the old head columnist who'd been there forever. So you
- 46:47Speaker 1: can't do anything about it. Like if Bob Ryan had
- 46:50Speaker 1: decided to be there and just said, Hey, you know
- 46:55Speaker 1: what you did. Just fess up. Tell them the truth.
- 47:03Speaker 2: I was going to say in that media market too,
- 47:04Speaker 2: I know there was somebody that was getting elbowed sitting
- 47:08Speaker 2: in that press corps. Like, I know you want to
- 47:11Speaker 2: say it.
- 47:11Speaker 1: I know you want to say it. This was old
- 47:13Speaker 1: school New York. Like, can you imagine if this had
- 47:15Speaker 1: been on page six and everybody involved was in New
- 47:18Speaker 1: York City?
- 47:21Speaker 2: You would have had to invoke some moral clause in
- 47:23Speaker 2: because this one ain't going away with just one press conference.
- 47:25Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Somebody, it would have been all bad for
- 47:29Speaker 1: all parties involved, Jack. All parties involved. All right, I'll
- 47:33Speaker 1: ask you one last thing before we get out of
- 47:34Speaker 1: here because I see this come up this morning. I
- 47:36Speaker 1: hadn't thought about it in a long time. The Cowboys
- 47:39Speaker 1: are not talking about no long-term deal with George Pickens.
- 47:42Speaker 1: And I don't see how this ends well.
- 47:46Speaker 2: We literally talked about it. We talked about this in
- 47:49Speaker 2: the fall. that I didn't want to be the one
- 47:52Speaker 2: holding that bag, having to hand that money off to
- 47:55Speaker 2: George Pickens. And it feels very much like the Cowboys
- 47:57Speaker 2: got to the end of the year feeling great, and
- 47:59Speaker 2: then it was time to talk contracts, and everybody had
- 48:02Speaker 2: to sit and think, like, damn, $ 20- plus million. I mean,
- 48:07Speaker 2: that is why receivers get paid these days. But that one?
- 48:11Speaker 1: Well, then he played himself into the 30-40 reign. Exactly.
- 48:14Speaker 2: Exactly. And this is worst-case scenario, because he can make
- 48:18Speaker 2: that demand. And he can look at Dallas in the
- 48:20Speaker 2: face and say, it's April. What else you going to do?
- 48:24Speaker 2: You going to try to go win a championship with
- 48:26Speaker 2: your over 30 quarterback who has had these lower leg
- 48:29Speaker 2: issues and this offense that didn't pop off again until
- 48:32Speaker 2: you had me to play with C.D.
- 48:33Speaker 1: Lamb?
- 48:34Speaker 2: You going to send me on my way or you
- 48:36Speaker 2: are going to tell me not to talk to you
- 48:37Speaker 2: until next offseason? That is that's really I think is
- 48:40Speaker 2: the worst part about it. It's less of being nervous
- 48:43Speaker 2: about handing off the money and more about that. The
- 48:45Speaker 2: more you slow play this, the more you risk. George
- 48:49Speaker 2: Pickens turning into George Pickens again. Because he ain't got
- 48:54Speaker 2: no reason not to.
- 48:55Speaker 1: Yeah, they got the good version of George Pickens for
- 48:57Speaker 1: the most part last year. Spaced out George Pickens. That's
- 49:02Speaker 1: still just, what are you doing right now?
- 49:06Speaker 2: I said it then, the best thing you could have
- 49:08Speaker 2: done is take that great season, go trade him for
- 49:11Speaker 2: a high second round pick or a late first round pick.
- 49:14Speaker 2: And everybody, you get to get yelled at for a
- 49:16Speaker 2: week being Jerry Jones and giving away another good player,
- 49:18Speaker 2: but you don't have to be responsible. for what he
- 49:21Speaker 2: gets paid. That would have been the best-case scenario, and
- 49:23Speaker 2: now you are here back against the wall hoping that
- 49:26Speaker 2: Tiger don't go Tiger. While I'm borrowing all these comedian analogies,
- 49:30Speaker 2: we hoping that Tiger don't go Tiger and start eating
- 49:32Speaker 2: faces in this locker room.
- 49:34Speaker 1: Oh, man, this is like... This draft, I had said
- 49:39Speaker 1: that whatever is going to be about this draft was
- 49:41Speaker 1: actually going to be like the surrounding stuff was going
- 49:44Speaker 1: to be it. Like I was hoping A.J. Brown would
- 49:46Speaker 1: get trapped, traded while this draft was going on. Right.
- 49:49Speaker 1: Like this is it seems that everything around the league
- 49:52Speaker 1: now is more interesting to the draft, which actually doesn't
- 49:54Speaker 1: really happen that much. Right.
- 49:57Speaker 2: I mean, I'm still waiting to see if Max Crosby
- 49:59Speaker 2: is going to remain a Raider.
- 50:01Speaker 1: It doesn't seem like they're like, oh, he's just like,
- 50:04Speaker 1: all right, well, cool. I guess I'm a Raider now. No,
- 50:06Speaker 1: I don't. I don't.
- 50:06Speaker 2: It don't have to be that way. It don't got
- 50:09Speaker 2: to be that way. You probably weren't supposed to get
- 50:10Speaker 2: two first round picks to begin with. So maybe we
- 50:13Speaker 2: just need to reconvene and take what we can get
- 50:15Speaker 2: for this edge rusher who does not match our timeline
- 50:17Speaker 2: at all.
- 50:19Speaker 1: Yeah, this his his whole everything has been all this.
- 50:22Speaker 1: And by the way, we still have a chance that
- 50:23Speaker 1: this will be a season where Deshaun Watson is the
- 50:25Speaker 1: starting quarterback for an NFL team.
- 50:28Speaker 2: Yikes.
- 50:29Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers.
- 50:32Speaker 2: That's the other thing is that this draft is happening
- 50:34Speaker 2: in Pittsburgh. And one of the questions I've been rattling
- 50:36Speaker 2: around in my brain is, what can Aaron Rodgers do
- 50:39Speaker 2: between now and about four o'clock my time tomorrow to
- 50:43Speaker 2: make himself the main character again? Because I know he's
- 50:46Speaker 2: thinking about it.
- 50:47Speaker 1: That's right. He has done this before.
- 50:49Speaker 2: Yes, I know he's thinking about it. And this is
- 50:53Speaker 2: a head coach with the Steelers that they did not
- 50:56Speaker 2: leave on the greatest of terms. And this might be
- 50:58Speaker 2: a nice little way to, you know, kind of stick
- 51:00Speaker 2: a knife in again.
- 51:02Speaker 1: And they say that they've been talking and everything else.
- 51:04Speaker 1: The Steelers are operating as though they believe Aaron Rodgers
- 51:06Speaker 1: is going to come back, and I just don't see
- 51:07Speaker 1: why that is ever your play.
- 51:09Speaker 2: Why is that a good enough answer? That's the thing
- 51:11Speaker 2: I don't get. Aaron Rodgers can say what he wants.
- 51:14Speaker 2: You are the Pittsburgh Steelers. Why are you beholden to
- 51:17Speaker 2: a 42-year-old?
- 51:18Speaker 1: Right, but the draft has no quarterback. The idea that, well,
- 51:21Speaker 1: maybe they'll just take Ty Simpson. If Ty Simpson falls
- 51:24Speaker 1: to them, hey, man, We'll see how it ultimately turns
- 51:27Speaker 1: out with Jackson Dart. But if that quarterback slips to
- 51:29Speaker 1: the 20s, you may as well wait till the 30s
- 51:31Speaker 1: before you take him. Like you show me the quarterback
- 51:33Speaker 1: from the 20s that works out. That range, that rank,
- 51:36Speaker 1: for whatever reason, if nobody else in time decided I
- 51:40Speaker 1: need to go up and go get that dude, then
- 51:42Speaker 1: you don't want that dude either.
- 51:44Speaker 2: Because that means you had questions. That means you weren't sure. Otherwise,
- 51:48Speaker 2: he would have been a top 15 guy.
- 51:50Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson is the one exception, and that is one
- 51:53Speaker 1: of the most exceptional cases of a prospect ever because
- 51:56Speaker 1: they're like, yo, we can't get them to pick up
- 51:57Speaker 1: the phone, man.
- 51:58Speaker 2: Right. Exactly.
- 52:01Speaker 1: Who knows where Lamar Jackson would have gone if he
- 52:03Speaker 1: had just had some people around to answer the phone. Right.
- 52:07Speaker 2: Thank goodness.
- 52:09Speaker 1: You get the guy in the 20s, that's your Brady Quinn.
- 52:11Speaker 1: That's your Johnny Manziel, right? Teddy Bridgewater worked out best
- 52:15Speaker 1: case scenario for a guy that you get in the
- 52:17Speaker 1: 30s outside of Lamar Jackson. But once those guys get
- 52:20Speaker 1: down there, if you're the only one that think this
- 52:22Speaker 1: is a good idea, when the guys get to like
- 52:24Speaker 1: the second and third round, it's because everybody thinks they
- 52:27Speaker 1: might get a steal.
- 52:28Speaker 2: Right.
- 52:28Speaker 1: They don't think they're getting a steal at 20. They're
- 52:31Speaker 1: just like, I don't know.
- 52:33Speaker 2: If the Jets got two first-round picks and they got
- 52:36Speaker 2: the first pick in the second round, if they thought
- 52:38Speaker 2: that highly about this, they'd go make this happen. Or
- 52:41Speaker 2: they got the second overall pick and the first pick
- 52:43Speaker 2: in the second round, I would go make this happen
- 52:45Speaker 2: if I needed to. The fact that you have heard
- 52:47Speaker 2: no smoke at all that their GM is trying to
- 52:50Speaker 2: get back into the first round to go get Ty
- 52:52Speaker 2: Simpson should probably tell you if you're the Cardinals, if
- 52:55Speaker 2: you're any of these teams that might want to try
- 52:57Speaker 2: to weasel their way into the mid-20s to go grab them,
- 52:59Speaker 2: just wait. You will probably be better off for it.
- 53:02Speaker 1: And think of all the quarterbacks people have talked themselves into.
- 53:06Speaker 1: Keep it real. Jackson Dart was a talk yourself into
- 53:09Speaker 1: sort of guy. I think he outperformed what I thought
- 53:12Speaker 1: was possible from him as a rookie, but I don't
- 53:14Speaker 1: think that's a great quarterback.
- 53:16Speaker 2: You can't make the argument that's a good quarterback yet.
- 53:19Speaker 1: He's been fun. They had him, and he was handing
- 53:22Speaker 1: the ball. He a white boy with chains, and then
- 53:25Speaker 1: they had a John Riggins white boy that he was
- 53:27Speaker 1: giving the ball to, man. They was up here excited.
- 53:30Speaker 1: excited that shit was making them feel good.
- 53:34Speaker 2: You know i think that i feel like every fan
- 53:36Speaker 2: if there's any fan base who can appreciate those two
- 53:39Speaker 2: dynamics in the backfield it's the one that don't ever
- 53:42Speaker 2: want no black sergeant quarterback.
- 53:43Speaker 1: Yeah they look at jackson darren they're like oh yeah
- 53:46Speaker 1: that's close enough they see jackson darren like yeah that's
- 53:48Speaker 1: close enough but that's they talk themselves into that and
- 53:51Speaker 1: and where and where did they take them 25.
- 53:56Speaker 2: And he was just good enough to get his head
- 53:58Speaker 2: coach fired.
- 53:59Speaker 1: Yep.
- 54:01Speaker 2: That is the perfect line.
- 54:03Speaker 1: The GM that does that is putting his whole situation. Look,
- 54:08Speaker 1: you will not get fired for the quarterback you did
- 54:10Speaker 1: not draft. Exactly.
- 54:12Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 54:13Speaker 1: I never really thought about that until right now. The
- 54:15Speaker 1: quarterback you did not draft will not get you fired.
- 54:18Speaker 2: If Jackson Dart was that nice... then John Harbaugh would
- 54:20Speaker 2: have to report to Joe Shane and not be reporting
- 54:22Speaker 2: directly to ownership. Okay? Clearly, the Giants are telling you,
- 54:26Speaker 2: you don't get no extra credit for making that move,
- 54:28Speaker 2: big dog. That don't go on your resume the way
- 54:30Speaker 2: you think it does.
- 54:32Speaker 1: Hey, man. Deontay Lee. Check him out covering football for
- 54:35Speaker 1: the Ranger. My brother, I appreciate you.
- 54:37Speaker 2: Appreciate you always, bro.
- 54:38Speaker 1: All right, man. And ladies and gentlemen, thanks so much
