- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Paps.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Week 7 of the NFL is almost in the books,
- 0:21Speaker 2: but we have a lot to break down, Paul.
- 0:23Speaker 4: I'm actually tired from watching so much sports this weekend.
- 0:25Speaker 4: Just sitting on the couch. I didn't play sports. I
- 0:27Speaker 4: watched it. And we've got to crank it up again tonight.
- 0:29Speaker 4: Game 3 of the World Series. Monday Night Football. More,
- 0:32Speaker 4: and we're ready for it.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Yep, absolutely. All right. There's a funny thing that happened
- 0:36Speaker 2: this weekend. Some good teams lost. Two undefeated teams. But
- 0:39Speaker 2: nothing changed with the Super Bowl odds, Paul. Still, you've
- 0:43Speaker 2: got the Niners, you've got the Bills, and you've got
- 0:45Speaker 2: the Chiefs. What do you think? Are we looking at
- 0:47Speaker 2: a different mix of Super Bowl contenders after an upset
- 0:50Speaker 2: late in week? Right.
- 0:50Speaker 4: You can make the case this weekend you know less
- 0:52Speaker 4: about the NFL or more teams came back together because.
- 0:55Speaker 4: The 49ers lose in a winnable game, Brock Purdy with
- 0:58Speaker 4: that last pick. The Bills look better by not playing
- 1:01Speaker 4: this week.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03Speaker 4: So who's the team that maybe made a little hay for.
- 1:05Speaker 3: You this weekend?
- 1:06Speaker 2: Nobody made a hay. The Niners, I told you on Friday,
- 1:08Speaker 2: they were on a short week, played on Monday night.
- 1:10Speaker 4: You called that one.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and you have to understand, these teams have the
- 1:13Speaker 2: cavalry coming. The Niners have a bye, then both their
- 1:18Speaker 2: starting receivers coming back, so I'm not worried about them.
- 1:20Speaker 2: And the Chiefs, now the Chiefs are more interesting. The
- 1:23Speaker 2: Chiefs look terrible last year.
- 1:24Speaker 5: Terrible.
- 1:24Speaker 2: All-time bad offensively. I'm not worried.
- 1:27Speaker 4: I'm not worried about the Chiefs. I give more credit
- 1:29Speaker 4: to the Seahawks for pitching a shutout defensively. They stopped
- 1:32Speaker 4: the running game. They stopped the passing game. You said
- 1:34Speaker 4: Kenneth Walker was going to go under 50 yards. You
- 1:36Speaker 4: called him and gave him your props. I will say
- 1:38Speaker 4: the Seahawks felt much, much better because they got a
- 1:41Speaker 4: little bit of a running game. Sam Darnold had that
- 1:44Speaker 4: one pick in the end zone, which bothered me, of course.
- 1:46Speaker 4: But they showed that their defense could throw a shutout.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Well, I wonder, though, Paul, a game like this, there's
- 1:51Speaker 2: so much emotion. I think there was a narrative coming in.
- 1:54Speaker 2: We gave you Kenneth Walker, and he is making you
- 1:56Speaker 2: into the Super Bowl team. Right. I wonder if the
- 1:58Speaker 2: Seahawks were just up for this game, and what does
- 2:01Speaker 2: it mean? Because they still struggled offensively as well. There
- 2:04Speaker 2: was a Sam Darnold pick. The receivers banged into each other.
- 2:06Speaker 2: But there were a lot of weird play calls by Seattle.
- 2:09Speaker 2: I don't know if I trust them.
- 2:11Speaker 4: I disagree. I actually trust the Seahawks a little bit
- 2:13Speaker 4: more now because this is how they did it all
- 2:15Speaker 4: last season.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:15Speaker 4: They outscored people and threw defensive shutouts a lot last season.
- 2:19Speaker 4: Not shutouts, but, you know, by pitching almost a no-hitter.
- 2:22Speaker 4: And it was JSN, a little Sam Darnold, and a
- 2:25Speaker 4: lot of defense, and that's how they won last night.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Can you throw to one guy for an entire season?
- 2:30Speaker 3: Yes, yes.
- 2:30Speaker 4: It worked last year. He's got to lead the league
- 2:33Speaker 4: in targets. JSN, my wife was asking me, like, this
- 2:36Speaker 4: little guy is the best receiver in football? I'm like, yeah,
- 2:38Speaker 4: he's not little and he's not big. He just runs
- 2:40Speaker 4: these crisp patterns, and if it's close to him, he's
- 2:43Speaker 4: catching it.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Look at that play.
- 2:45Speaker 2: It's a full season, and there are 31 defensive coordinators
- 2:48Speaker 2: in the NFL trying to stop him. If you have
- 2:50Speaker 2: one player who can do anything, I know they had
- 2:52Speaker 2: a running game on Sunday night, but they basically have
- 2:55Speaker 2: one player on offense. It feels like that's a problem
- 2:57Speaker 2: to me, Paul.
- 2:58Speaker 4: It would be a problem, yes. The Kenneth Walker thing
- 3:00Speaker 4: I still think will affect them in the playoffs. If
- 3:02Speaker 4: they get a lead in the game, they can't just
- 3:04Speaker 4: run you to death. So that's the one team. All right,
- 3:06Speaker 4: I'm going to switch to another team. This team, I
- 3:08Speaker 4: think you called this one as well. The Bengals hang
- 3:10Speaker 4: 35 in the second half against the Ravens. The Ravens
- 3:14Speaker 4: know Lamar Jackson. It wouldn't have mattered. They could have
- 3:16Speaker 4: had two Lamar Jacksons.
- 3:18Speaker 2: This game does not mean as much to me.
- 3:20Speaker 4: From the Bengals' side?
- 3:22Speaker 2: I mean, Bengals, what did the Bengals really show you?
- 3:24Speaker 2: They got shut out by the Ravens in the first half.
- 3:27Speaker 4: They were pacing themselves.
- 3:28Speaker 2: The Ravens, no offense to the Ravens, and I'm sure
- 3:30Speaker 2: Lamar Jackson's really hurt, but they're mailing in this chunk
- 3:33Speaker 2: of the season to get Lamar fully healthy. The Ravens
- 3:36Speaker 2: just lost to the Browns. They're completely harmless.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Okay, early in the season, you said you liked the Bengals'
- 3:41Speaker 4: defense and Dexter Lawrence and all that stuff.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:43Speaker 4: They held King Henry to under three yards a carry.
- 3:46Speaker 2: That's because you know that there's no passing game. I mean, basically,
- 3:50Speaker 2: they figured out it's Zay Flowers or Buss on Baltimore. No,
- 3:53Speaker 2: I'm not reading into that. The Bengals, by the way,
- 3:56Speaker 2: if you're looking at the Super Bowl odds, they move
- 3:57Speaker 2: up to 10 in the Super Bowl odds. They don't
- 4:00Speaker 2: feel like we're talking about contenders, Paul. Are you sure
- 4:02Speaker 2: that team is so good? Because they'll come be a
- 4:05Speaker 2: completely different team next week.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Again, the Bengals always have a rough start in September.
- 4:09Speaker 4: I just like the way they are right now with
- 4:10Speaker 4: Joe Burrow healthy. Chase T.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Higgins? T.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Higgins rarely leads them in receiving. That's perfect. All right,
- 4:15Speaker 4: I'm switching to another team. The Detroit Lions. Now, that
- 4:19Speaker 4: game was wonky. Could have gone either way. Trey Smack,
- 4:22Speaker 4: he'd be looking for a job soon, the kicker for
- 4:24Speaker 4: the Packers. They did just enough on defense, the Lions. Now,
- 4:27Speaker 4: I'm not saying they played great on defense, but they
- 4:29Speaker 4: were serviceable plus on defense with a great offense.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Are you talking about in the Super Bowl picks?
- 4:34Speaker 4: No. Oh, yeah, I think the Lions are absolutely right
- 4:37Speaker 4: back in the thick of things.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Oh, I mean, I think they're going to be in
- 4:39Speaker 2: a dogfight to get into the playoffs.
- 4:41Speaker 4: Yes, but once they get there, they can outscore anybody.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Their offense, it's the same thing. Amirah St. Brown, Jameer Gibbs,
- 4:47Speaker 4: you know what's coming. Again, their defense could have lost
- 4:49Speaker 4: this game as well as won it, but I actually
- 4:51Speaker 4: feel better about the Lions than I did a week ago.
- 4:54Speaker 2: I don't feel good about that at all.
- 4:55Speaker 4: Do you feel good about anybody?
- 4:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel good about those three teams at the top,
- 4:58Speaker 2: San Francisco, Buffalo, and Kansas City. But the Lions, here's
- 5:02Speaker 2: their problem. Their coach is a maniac, Paul. Fourth down
- 5:05Speaker 2: deep in your own territory, that's going to kill them.
- 5:08Speaker 2: I think they're running Jameer Gibbs into the ground. I
- 5:11Speaker 2: think their defense is still mediocre. I don't see them
- 5:14Speaker 2: as a top ten contender for Super Bowl, Paul. Another thing, too,
- 5:18Speaker 2: they're such a brutal division. They're not going to get
- 5:20Speaker 2: any breaks. The playoffs are going to be on the road.
- 5:23Speaker 2: They're probably going to have to go outside. Are you
- 5:25Speaker 2: sure that they're still where they were a couple years ago?
- 5:28Speaker 4: No, they're not because they don't have the defense they
- 5:30Speaker 4: had a couple years ago. I just think they're in
- 5:31Speaker 4: way better shape than they were. Let me switch to
- 5:33Speaker 4: one more team. And this is not Super Bowl-ish, but
- 5:35Speaker 4: just a team that you've got to feel way better about.
- 5:37Speaker 4: The Atlanta Falcons take down the 49ers. Nothing. Nothing.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Nothing.
- 5:42Speaker 2: What did that mean?
- 5:43Speaker 4: They can make the playoffs and still not a threatening team.
- 5:45Speaker 2: What division are they playing in?
- 5:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I know.
- 5:47Speaker 2: The NFC South, they are going to be so up
- 5:49Speaker 2: and down. Again, the Niners came in beat up. Listen,
- 5:51Speaker 2: I love the skilled position players. Of course, I love
- 5:53Speaker 2: Drake Lennon, Bajon Robinson, Pettis look great, but they were
- 5:56Speaker 2: playing a wounded animal and they are going to be like,
- 5:59Speaker 2: to me, they're going to be like the Panthers. They're
- 6:01Speaker 2: going to look great one week and terrible the next.
- 6:03Speaker 4: I'm going to not so fast you because the Falcons,
- 6:05Speaker 4: they're running on, you know, nobody likes them for the
- 6:08Speaker 4: Super Bowl any year. No one ever picks them. By
- 6:10Speaker 4: the way, if they wore those uniforms every week, they'd
- 6:12Speaker 4: go 17 and 0, by the way. Um, They have
- 6:14Speaker 4: found their quarterback. They've found a good left-handed quarterback, which
- 6:17Speaker 4: you love. They've got Drake London. He's catching all the
- 6:20Speaker 4: balls from Michael Penix. I think they are more threatening
- 6:23Speaker 4: than you think because they don't have to work that
- 6:25Speaker 4: hard to get to the playoffs.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Okay. Do you think they win the division?
- 6:28Speaker 4: Yes, because Tampa, that was an anomaly. They're not going
- 6:31Speaker 4: to be any good. And Carolina, by the way, got smoked.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Yeah, but then again, they'll probably go turn around and
- 6:37Speaker 2: beat Atlanta next week. I think this whole division is
- 6:41Speaker 2: going to end up around 8-9, 9-8, and not be
- 6:45Speaker 2: threatening in the playoffs. So, honestly, I know what you're saying.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Atlanta can look great on paper. But even San Francisco,
- 6:51Speaker 2: with all the injuries and no receivers starting, was right
- 6:54Speaker 2: there with them.
- 6:54Speaker 4: I think I'm saying this. We haven't talked about the
- 6:56Speaker 4: Rams yet. I think I'm saying this because knowing the
- 6:58Speaker 4: NFC scares me. Not one team, including the 49ers, because
- 7:01Speaker 4: they still always have health issues. And the Rams, while
- 7:04Speaker 4: they got a win yesterday, they are still going uphill
- 7:06Speaker 4: a little bit.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Yeah, see, I think it's going to be a desperate
- 7:09Speaker 2: fight for the playoffs because there are four NFC teams
- 7:12Speaker 2: who would be in right now. I don't know if
- 7:13Speaker 2: you saw that stat. But some of them have to
- 7:15Speaker 2: fall off just by the nature of the schedules. So
- 7:17Speaker 2: you're telling me Minnesota looks like a playoff team, Chicago
- 7:20Speaker 2: looks like a playoff team for sure, Detroit looks like
- 7:23Speaker 2: a playoff team, and Green Bay looks like a playoff team.
- 7:25Speaker 2: So all four cannot make it, Paul.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Well, Minnesota, by the math, they can go five and
- 7:30Speaker 4: six the rest of the way and still make the playoffs.
- 7:31Speaker 4: And they could defend their way– to a playoff spot.
- 7:34Speaker 4: I'm just saying Atlanta is one of those teams where
- 7:36Speaker 4: they can have a game. They can have a game
- 7:38Speaker 4: where they beat someone they shouldn't in a playoff game,
- 7:40Speaker 4: even on the road.
- 7:42Speaker 2: I don't think so. If the topic is Super Bowl
- 7:43Speaker 2: cadet or not, for sure. I think the big storyline
- 7:46Speaker 2: of the NFC is going to be how are all
- 7:48Speaker 2: four of these quality NFC North teams going to fare?
- 7:51Speaker 2: Are they going to make the playoffs? They deserve to
- 7:53Speaker 2: make the playoffs. They're good enough to make the playoffs.
- 7:55Speaker 2: But that's just not the reality.
- 7:56Speaker 4: And the same for the NFC West. If the LA
- 7:58Speaker 4: Rams win three in a row, they're right back in
- 8:01Speaker 4: the thick of things, and they'll start thinking, San Francisco,
- 8:04Speaker 4: that loss opens the door for them.
- 8:05Speaker 2: All right, let's transition to college football.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Oh, you want helmet stickers first?
- 8:08Speaker 2: Oh, helmet stickers, sorry.
- 8:09Speaker 4: Let's do weekend helmet stickers.
- 8:11Speaker 2: What do you got? Who's your helmet sticker?
- 8:12Speaker 4: I'm going to go, you're going to love this one,
- 8:13Speaker 4: Emmanuel Wilson, Seahawks running back, fourth-year guy out of Fort
- 8:17Speaker 4: Valley State. Really nice running back, 100 yards rushing. He
- 8:20Speaker 4: helped the cause. Bigger picture, it's your job now, man.
- 8:23Speaker 4: It is your job now. You're going to get 20
- 8:25Speaker 4: carries a game. They love to run in running back.
- 8:27Speaker 4: You're a nobody historically. You played a couple years with
- 8:30Speaker 4: Green Bay. This is your backfield, man, all yours.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, Jadarian Price I think will be back
- 8:35Speaker 2: next week.
- 8:36Speaker 4: He's got the next month to himself.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Okay, I'm going to go to Jesse Bates
- 8:40Speaker 2: of Atlanta, who I was just dissing as somewhat irrelevant.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Jesse Bates is awesome. Cincinnati should have kept this guy.
- 8:46Speaker 2: He makes a big play every week. Had a key
- 8:48Speaker 2: interception yesterday. against San Francisco that I think saved the
- 8:51Speaker 2: Falcons the game. Brock Purdy, of course, rolling right. He
- 8:55Speaker 2: did the toe drag swag here. I mean, for a
- 8:57Speaker 2: defensive back, that's a great catch. Wide receiver makes it
- 9:01Speaker 2: a great catch.
- 9:01Speaker 4: That looks like a wide receiver catch. It's so beautiful.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a beautiful play, and he's a great player.
- 9:05Speaker 4: He's holding it like an egg, like risky business with
- 9:07Speaker 4: the glass egg.
- 9:08Speaker 2: All right, let's do college football. I have to be honest, Paul,
- 9:11Speaker 2: this game made me so mad, and you and I
- 9:13Speaker 2: were texting deep in the night on Saturday night. Of course,
- 9:15Speaker 2: talking about the Central Florida BYU game. Now, Paul, RG3
- 9:20Speaker 2: called the game, which is cool. And he was on
- 9:22Speaker 2: the Dan Patrick show and he kind of set the
- 9:24Speaker 2: tone for what happened at the end.
- 9:27Speaker 6: UCF won it, didn't win it, could have won it,
- 9:33Speaker 6: won it again. And BYU still got another chance. And
- 9:37Speaker 6: at the end, I think the ball doesn't lie. And
- 9:40Speaker 6: the team that had earned the victory, or at least
- 9:43Speaker 6: the right to win, kick a game-winning field goal as
- 9:46Speaker 6: time expires, ended up winning that game.
- 9:52Speaker 4: I'm going to give you props for this one again.
- 9:53Speaker 4: You said BYU is in a jam this weekend against UCF.
- 9:56Speaker 4: This isn't northern Florida or southern Florida. You go to
- 9:58Speaker 4: central Florida. You better buckle your teeth. chin strap up.
- 10:01Speaker 4: It's a weird game because the refs kind of hosed
- 10:04Speaker 4: UCF at least two or three times in regulation. Then
- 10:07Speaker 4: they hosed BYU on the kick, the field goal, and overtime.
- 10:11Speaker 4: But BYU, that's a lost opportunity because you were in
- 10:13Speaker 4: such good position. Two weeks from now, you'd be versus Utah.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Game day would be out there. Two undefeated teams. You
- 10:19Speaker 4: beat Utah. You're cruising to the playoffs.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you might make the playoff anyway. I
- 10:24Speaker 2: think they're still top ten. So I really think UCF
- 10:27Speaker 2: is the one who got screwed. There was a quarterback
- 10:29Speaker 2: sneak that RG3 talked about where he was clearly in.
- 10:32Speaker 2: And then here's my problem. I don't care about it. Sorry,
- 10:37Speaker 2: BYU got screwed at the end because they called a
- 10:39Speaker 2: roughing the kicker. Yep. The procedural errors are what bother me. Now,
- 10:43Speaker 2: Terry McCauley, the officiating expert, came out and explained that
- 10:46Speaker 2: the officials did not know the rules at the end
- 10:48Speaker 2: of regulation because UCF was supposed to get another shot
- 10:51Speaker 2: at the field goal. At the end of regulation, there
- 10:54Speaker 2: should not have been a 10-second runoff. The clock stopping
- 10:57Speaker 2: for the helmet off was not the only reason it stopped.
- 10:59Speaker 2: It also stopped because it was the end of a
- 11:01Speaker 2: legal kickdown. So the officials should know that.
- 11:04Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a procedural. That's not a judgment call of
- 11:06Speaker 4: a pass interference or something like that. And there are people,
- 11:09Speaker 4: every conference has a replay official and someone up top.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Someone's got to hit the gimme a 20 and say,
- 11:14Speaker 4: hey guys, let's get this together. The fans will be
- 11:16Speaker 4: okay if you take 60 seconds to reset the clock
- 11:19Speaker 4: and get things right. What they won't do, for the
- 11:22Speaker 4: next week, people have to argue. Remember going back to
- 11:24Speaker 4: the Western Michigan game? Fix it in the moment. The
- 11:26Speaker 4: fans can wait.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, listen, this sport is so crazy. Imagine
- 11:30Speaker 2: explaining all that to a European fan. I actually don't
- 11:34Speaker 2: know what a legal kickdown is.
- 11:36Speaker 4: No, I don't know. It's a new rule. We're going
- 11:37Speaker 4: to talk about a lot of rough issues.
- 11:39Speaker 2: I thought it was when the FBI raided a drug
- 11:40Speaker 2: house or something.
- 11:41Speaker 4: And you kicked down a door?
- 11:42Speaker 2: A legal kickdown.
- 11:43Speaker 4: Oh, like sabotage videos.
- 11:44Speaker 2: But Terry Bacali was in his element on Saturday Night
- 11:47Speaker 2: with that game. That was awesome. All right, coming up next,
- 11:49Speaker 2: I have a warm take on the Texas Longhorns. Are
- 11:53Speaker 2: they playoff bound? And Paulie talks about some coaches who
- 11:55Speaker 2: are on the hot seat. That's next. Not so fast.
- 11:58Speaker 4: Hot seat, warm takes. It all comes right together. Yeah,
- 12:01Speaker 4: that UCF game, I almost want to watch the fourth
- 12:03Speaker 4: quarter again.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 12:04Speaker 5: Chaos.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Took forever, too. Took forever. Back on Not So Fast,
- 12:11Speaker 4: Pat from Perloff. Midday, pick me up for you, Pearl.
- 12:13Speaker 4: Let's go to Minnesota Golden Gophers taking down Iowa 13-10.
- 12:16Speaker 4: The Floyd of Rosedale Trophy, they call it. Minnesota has
- 12:21Speaker 4: lots of different trophies. Check out the pig, the bronze
- 12:23Speaker 4: pig going around. Look at this photo. This youngster atop.
- 12:28Speaker 4: This is artwork. This should be in a Louvre. This
- 12:30Speaker 4: is awesome. Great photo.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Okay, as a parent, I do wonder when they're young
- 12:34Speaker 2: kids at a game too late in the night, like,
- 12:37Speaker 2: Should that kid be asleep?
- 12:38Speaker 4: That kid is winning. Those parents are winning. They got headphones.
- 12:41Speaker 4: They got a nice little vest on the kid. Warm, cuddly,
- 12:44Speaker 4: watching her or his, I think it's a her, her
- 12:47Speaker 4: gophers take down Iowa.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I got to be honest. Sunday morning, she's going
- 12:50Speaker 2: to be a nightmare, though.
- 12:50Speaker 4: Yeah, she'll be a mess, but that moment forever, and
- 12:53Speaker 4: that should be wallpapered on walls all around Minnesota. All right,
- 12:56Speaker 4: let's go to it. It's time for warm takes here
- 12:57Speaker 4: on Not So Fast, Pearl. Here we go. Getting chilly outside.
- 13:00Speaker 4: 39 this morning. I will go first. It was a
- 13:03Speaker 4: pretty nice little Saturday in college football. Bed, bath, and beyond.
- 13:06Speaker 4: Don't know if I'll have time. It was good for Miami,
- 13:08Speaker 4: good for UCF, good for Indiana. Texas, a little dicey.
- 13:12Speaker 4: Great for UCLA. It was less fun for three Big
- 13:15Speaker 4: Ten head coaches. Oregon's Dan Lanning. The Ducks got handled
- 13:18Speaker 4: by Illinois. Not beat. Handled. USC's Lincoln Riley. The Trojans
- 13:22Speaker 4: got handled by Wisconsin. Michigan first-year head coach Kyle Winningham.
- 13:26Speaker 4: His offense was a no-show against Indiana. We're in this
- 13:29Speaker 4: weird era where Indiana football beating Michigan football at Michigan
- 13:34Speaker 4: is not a shocker, not a surprise. The past thousand years,
- 13:38Speaker 4: that would have been the biggest story in college football history.
- 13:40Speaker 4: But now, yeah, Indiana took down Michigan. No big deal.
- 13:42Speaker 4: That's a problem. Let's start with Michigan. Michigan had the
- 13:46Speaker 4: Sharon Moore situation. They brought in Kyle Winningham. He was
- 13:48Speaker 4: supposed to right the ship, safe coach, good guy, no issues.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Great.
- 13:53Speaker 4: They stink. Michigan football is in bad shape. Their quarterback
- 13:56Speaker 4: situation is a mess. Bryce Underwood's going to be transferring
- 13:59Speaker 4: in about 10 seconds. And with Michigan... You may have
- 14:02Speaker 4: to think about resetting your coaching situation this offseason. You
- 14:05Speaker 4: may say to Kyle Whittingham, here's a check. We'll talk
- 14:08Speaker 4: more about it later. But that's a situation. Okay, let's
- 14:11Speaker 4: go to Lincoln Riley at USC. Lincoln Riley has done
- 14:14Speaker 4: nothing well so far this year. USC with a great
- 14:16Speaker 4: recruiting class, not working out on the field. And the
- 14:20Speaker 4: best college football team is UCLA. That's an even bigger
- 14:23Speaker 4: problem because they end the season, UCLA hosting USC. Lincoln
- 14:27Speaker 4: Riley may not have the choice to come back next year.
- 14:29Speaker 4: He may do a preemptive move and Get out before
- 14:31Speaker 4: you can. Now let's go to Dan Lanning and Oregon.
- 14:36Speaker 4: That's the biggie. Oregon football this year, everybody had them
- 14:39Speaker 4: in their top five. Dante Moore came back. He passed
- 14:41Speaker 4: on the NFL, Dante Moore. I know he was injured.
- 14:44Speaker 4: I know he's hurt. They have 95 other players on
- 14:46Speaker 4: that roster. You've got to get it together. Dan Lanning
- 14:48Speaker 4: with a no-show against Illinois. Uniforms look good. Your team
- 14:52Speaker 4: did not. Now, I don't think this is a fireable
- 14:54Speaker 4: offense for Dan Lanning. I think he gets one more year,
- 14:57Speaker 4: no matter how bad it goes. But it could go bad.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Northwestern versus Oregon, the fact that we're in discussion of
- 15:03Speaker 4: who's favored in that game is wild. Then they have
- 15:06Speaker 4: Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Washington. This could get much,
- 15:10Speaker 4: much worse for Dan Lanning. I don't think firings are pending,
- 15:14Speaker 4: but those are three pretty warm seats.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Gosh, to me, one of those names doesn't fit in
- 15:18Speaker 2: that list.
- 15:18Speaker 4: Which one?
- 15:19Speaker 2: Well, take a guess.
- 15:20Speaker 4: Weddingham?
- 15:20Speaker 2: No, Dan Lanning. I feel like every school in the
- 15:23Speaker 2: country would hire Dan Lanning tomorrow. He's going to have
- 15:25Speaker 2: one bad year. Right.
- 15:26Speaker 4: I think he gets the Hall Pass year. He gets
- 15:28Speaker 4: the Dabo Sweeney, but he didn't put as much into
- 15:29Speaker 4: the tank as Dabo Sweeney when he had five years
- 15:32Speaker 4: of being national quarterback.
- 15:34Speaker 2: But the quarterback injury, which you mentioned, that might give
- 15:37Speaker 2: him an excuse. It probably does. I mean, they're lucky
- 15:39Speaker 2: to have Dan Lanning. I think Alabama would switch coaches
- 15:42Speaker 2: tomorrow if they could.
- 15:44Speaker 4: It is wild that Oregon, if they somehow moved on
- 15:46Speaker 4: from Dan Lanning, he would have another job in an hour.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Yeah, okay. I'll stay in college football for my warm take.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Let's talk about the Texas Longhorns. They are the Dallas
- 15:54Speaker 2: Cowboys of the sport. They're the must-watch team. They're the
- 15:57Speaker 2: must-talk-about team. I put out a scenario on social media
- 16:00Speaker 2: this weekend. They have a tough schedule coming up. Mississippi
- 16:03Speaker 2: State this week, and then at Missouri, at LSU. If
- 16:06Speaker 2: they split those two games and then beat Arkansas at
- 16:09Speaker 2: A & M, they will end up with three losses.
- 16:11Speaker 2: A three-loss Texas Longhorns team should have made the playoff
- 16:14Speaker 2: last year. And I got to tell you, they're going
- 16:16Speaker 2: to have a great argument this year. They're the only
- 16:18Speaker 2: team in the top 11 with any quality wins at all,
- 16:22Speaker 2: pretty much. Nobody's beat anybody except Texas has beaten Ohio State,
- 16:27Speaker 2: and they've beaten now Ole Miss, and they won at Tennessee.
- 16:30Speaker 2: All impressive wins. You look at the top 10 ball.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Who is UCLA beating that is even respectable? Nobody. I mean,
- 16:36Speaker 2: they did beat Wisconsin, but that doesn't mean much to me.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Who is Miami beating and who will Miami? The loser
- 16:42Speaker 2: of Miami-Notre Dame will end the season with no quality wins.
- 16:45Speaker 2: So if the committee leaves out Texas, even if they
- 16:47Speaker 2: have three losses, they are saying all we care about
- 16:50Speaker 2: is losses. Quality wins mean nothing. And I know that's
- 16:53Speaker 2: the reality of the situation. And then what happens? No
- 16:55Speaker 2: one's going to schedule anyone because everyone's going to just
- 16:57Speaker 2: want to avoid losses. I think this is going to
- 16:59Speaker 2: put the committee in a jam down the road because
- 17:02Speaker 2: Texas is a good team but an inconsistent team. Of
- 17:05Speaker 2: course they beat Ole Miss. We should have saw that
- 17:06Speaker 2: coming because when you count Texas out, that's when they
- 17:09Speaker 2: play well. When you think they're going to win, that's
- 17:11Speaker 2: when they lose. But I think Texas with three losses, Paul,
- 17:15Speaker 2: deserves to get in. And I'm going to say it
- 17:16Speaker 2: early because you know that's going to be an argument
- 17:18Speaker 2: around Thanksgiving.
- 17:18Speaker 4: Yeah, in a month from now this will be a
- 17:19Speaker 4: big topic because they probably will lose one more because
- 17:22Speaker 4: they have such a tough schedule. The point of their schedule,
- 17:24Speaker 4: like those losses are not the same as other losses.
- 17:27Speaker 4: And I hope the committee looks at Texas and says
- 17:30Speaker 4: they have to because of the SEC schedule all these
- 17:32Speaker 4: big teams. But all the losses are tight. All the
- 17:34Speaker 4: losses are close. And plus, if it's close, they're putting
- 17:38Speaker 4: together a TV show, the committee.
- 17:40Speaker 2: I know, but they left them out last year.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Yes, they left them out last year, and they left
- 17:43Speaker 4: Notre Dame last year. So if I'm producing a TV show,
- 17:45Speaker 4: I want Arch Manning and Notre Dame in my show.
- 17:47Speaker 2: The one thing is, they might end up with four losses, too.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Let's be realistic.
- 17:50Speaker 4: That's the problem.
- 17:51Speaker 2: They're at Missouri and at LSU, and then they finish
- 17:54Speaker 2: up at A & M this year. I think that
- 17:56Speaker 2: that might be an issue as well.
- 17:58Speaker 3: All right.
- 17:58Speaker 4: You know who else had a rough weekend? I'll go
- 18:00Speaker 4: to who else had a rough weekend. The NFL referees.
- 18:03Speaker 4: All over the place. Too many flags. I think we
- 18:05Speaker 4: like less flags. Fewer flags, I would say, with your
- 18:08Speaker 4: ability there, Perloff. So not just that. This week was
- 18:11Speaker 4: quite different. This was about roughing. These were about hits.
- 18:14Speaker 4: And if you remember, if you were watching yesterday, Green
- 18:16Speaker 4: Bay versus Detroit, Tom Brady's on the call. And there
- 18:19Speaker 4: was a couple hits in the game where Brady started
- 18:21Speaker 4: to lose his mind.
- 18:25Speaker 5: What?
- 18:34Speaker 3: I'm guessing it's on the end of that play with Barnes.
- 18:37Speaker 4: There's no way.
- 18:38Speaker 3: Love throws it over the middle. There's linebackers in the middle.
- 18:42Speaker 4: He's just turning his right shoulder away from it.
- 18:44Speaker 2: That's allowed 99 out of 100.
- 18:47Speaker 3: Goff standing in the pocket.
- 18:50Speaker 4: No, my goodness.
- 18:52Speaker 1: What is that? There's no way. Brooks on the tackle.
- 18:56Speaker 1: This kind of makes a great play. It's a bang-bang play.
- 18:59Speaker 1: He rolls off his body. It's a great throw by Goff.
- 19:04Speaker 1: It's definitely not roughing the passer.
- 19:07Speaker 4: This is Tom Brady, a quarterback, going to bat for
- 19:09Speaker 4: the defense here. If you watch both those calls, sometimes
- 19:12Speaker 4: I wish when they do replay during games, they would
- 19:14Speaker 4: replay those in regular motion, not slow motion. In slow motion,
- 19:17Speaker 4: it takes away the entire perspective of the hit and
- 19:20Speaker 4: how fast the defenders are moving. And that's the point here.
- 19:22Speaker 4: We want physicality. We also want players protected to a point.
- 19:25Speaker 4: But we watch football because of physicality. I think the
- 19:28Speaker 4: refs in the NFL have to recalibrate. They have to
- 19:31Speaker 4: look at 300-pound defensive linemen coming after quarterback He grazed
- 19:34Speaker 4: Jared Goff there. He didn't rough him. He could have
- 19:37Speaker 4: laid into Jared Goff and absolutely planted him. He did not.
- 19:39Speaker 4: He skimmed off him. And these guys, guys like Chris Jones,
- 19:42Speaker 4: they fall down and they roll off quarterbacks. And this
- 19:46Speaker 4: hit here, this is a classic. You think the guy
- 19:48Speaker 4: may have the ball in his hand. Your job is
- 19:50Speaker 4: to knock it out. That was not egregious in any way.
- 19:52Speaker 4: These refs have to recalibrate how fast these defenders are moving. Also,
- 19:56Speaker 4: they've got to recalibrate what the fans want to see.
- 19:58Speaker 4: The fans pay to see hits and to see clean hits.
- 20:01Speaker 4: That is a clean, well-done hit, and Brady said so
- 20:04Speaker 4: about 10 different times.
- 20:05Speaker 2: That was barely even a hit. It's barely even a hit.
- 20:07Speaker 2: It was like a chuck.
- 20:08Speaker 4: He chucked him. He didn't land on golf in any
- 20:11Speaker 4: way here. The rest are doing a disservice to what
- 20:13Speaker 4: we love about football, and that is the violence. Now,
- 20:17Speaker 4: you want to call an egregious hit?
- 20:18Speaker 3: Great.
- 20:18Speaker 4: You want to call targeting, launching to that?
- 20:20Speaker 3: Great.
- 20:21Speaker 4: But don't call these ticky-tack fouls. it does a disservice
- 20:24Speaker 4: to what the fans are watching and want to watch.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Yeah, by the way, credit to Tom Brady. He's kind
- 20:28Speaker 2: of the voice of the NFL now. He's always, since
- 20:31Speaker 2: we started announcing, he's always called out the roughing. He's
- 20:35Speaker 2: never defensive quarterback. He always defends the defense.
- 20:37Speaker 4: And it's weird because Brady is known as kind of
- 20:38Speaker 4: a tough guy, pretty boy, but a tough guy as
- 20:41Speaker 4: a quarterback.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Well, I think he's trying to avoid this idea that
- 20:43Speaker 2: he has bias towards the quarterbacks. But he was right.
- 20:46Speaker 2: And Green Bay, that's the second game in a row
- 20:47Speaker 2: they probably lost because of officiating. But Green Bay, by
- 20:50Speaker 2: the way, They need a kicker. That is the even
- 20:52Speaker 2: bigger reason.
- 20:53Speaker 4: Do you think Tom Brady will hear us calling out
- 20:54Speaker 4: how well of a job he is? He'll be joining
- 20:56Speaker 4: the show soon, right?
- 20:57Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Tom is definitely an everyday, not-so-fast watcher. Okay,
- 21:01Speaker 2: I am going to go to the NFL for my
- 21:03Speaker 2: next warm take, the Los Angeles Rams. Do not count
- 21:06Speaker 2: out the Rams. Now, I pulled up something that I
- 21:09Speaker 2: look at every morning, Paul.
- 21:10Speaker 4: Here it comes.
- 21:10Speaker 2: The ESPN Playoff Tracker. and they had the Rams at 39%.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Teams above them, Green Bay Packers, not if they don't
- 21:17Speaker 2: get a kicker, New York Giants, I can see that one,
- 21:19Speaker 2: Tampa Bay still, because there's a great chance that they
- 21:22Speaker 2: win the NFC South. Detroit, I don't see that one either.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Then some teams that probably will make the playoffs. The
- 21:29Speaker 2: Rams have an easy schedule coming up, and they are
- 21:31Speaker 2: not that far behind. They're three and four. Now, I
- 21:34Speaker 2: have three straight wins. Now, I think the Chargers are
- 21:36Speaker 2: going to be tricky. The Chargers are going to be
- 21:38Speaker 2: fired up coming off a bye. Then they get at Washington.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Who knows who's playing quarterback? And then they get at Arizona.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Those are three wins in a row, possibly. They could
- 21:46Speaker 2: be six and four. But even if they don't, Myles
- 21:48Speaker 2: Garrett will be coming back, Paul, by hopefully week nine
- 21:51Speaker 2: or ten. And then you have Donald and Garrett. That's great.
- 21:54Speaker 2: And then they'll figure out how to rebuild the receiving core,
- 21:57Speaker 2: maybe make a trade at the deadline, maybe just go
- 21:59Speaker 2: tight end, tight end, tight end every play. I kind
- 22:01Speaker 2: of like what Sean McVay is doing. He's adjusting to
- 22:04Speaker 2: the team without Devontae Adams. I think they have enough
- 22:07Speaker 2: offense and their defense is going to be elite. I
- 22:09Speaker 2: am not nearly as worried as ESPN's playoff tracker about
- 22:12Speaker 2: those Los Angeles Rams.
- 22:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm with you. A month from now, I think
- 22:15Speaker 4: the Rams will be 7-4. The problem they have is
- 22:17Speaker 4: Seattle twice in the last three weeks. Seattle could take
- 22:21Speaker 4: them out of the playoffs.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Seattle's not going to beat them twice. I think they're
- 22:25Speaker 2: very evenly matched. Remember how close the two games last
- 22:28Speaker 2: year were. Seattle's another team with injuries. All this depends
- 22:32Speaker 2: on health. Now, I don't think they're necessarily going to
- 22:34Speaker 2: win the next three. I'll even go that far. Yeah,
- 22:36Speaker 2: I mean, think about the Chargers. They have a lot
- 22:38Speaker 2: of talent. They're coming off a bye at the Commanders.
- 22:41Speaker 2: The Rams could easily drop those games. But even if
- 22:44Speaker 2: they do, it's such a long season. Everyone's looking at
- 22:46Speaker 2: the Vikings, for example, at 6-0. They're going to lose
- 22:49Speaker 2: four games. They're going to lose possibly three of their
- 22:52Speaker 2: next four. This is all going to work out, Paul.
- 22:55Speaker 2: This is all going to go back to the middle
- 22:58Speaker 2: where we expect it.
- 22:59Speaker 4: I think you just debunked your own warm take and
- 23:01Speaker 4: then re-bunked it at the end.
- 23:02Speaker 2: I'm just saying, everyone who's winning now is not going
- 23:04Speaker 2: to be winning at Thanksgiving, but the Rams will be.
- 23:06Speaker 4: All right, coming up next, Chris Vannini of The Athletic
- 23:09Speaker 4: will talk about the entire college football weekend in Are
- 23:11Speaker 4: coaches on the hot seat or just the warm seat
- 23:13Speaker 4: at this point?
- 23:13Speaker 2: Stick around.
- 23:14Speaker 4: Not so fast. Pass to Perloff. Yep, a nice debunking.
- 23:19Speaker 4: That hit on 32 branch, he basically chucked the guy
- 23:23Speaker 4: from the Packers.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Oh, the one, yeah.
- 23:26Speaker 4: Yeah, barely even touched it.
- 23:28Speaker 2: Welcome back to Not So Fast. Andrew Perloff, Paul Paps,
- 23:31Speaker 2: NBC Sports Now, and Peacock. We've been breaking down the
- 23:34Speaker 2: college football weekend today. It's kind of hard to tell
- 23:37Speaker 2: what's going on if you look at the rankings, Paul.
- 23:39Speaker 4: It was very saucy. There was a point in that
- 23:41Speaker 4: Texas game with the onside kick by Ole Miss. I'm like,
- 23:43Speaker 4: this might go the other way. So a lot of
- 23:45Speaker 4: stuff happened.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Absolutely. So we have to bring in athletic senior writer
- 23:49Speaker 2: and host of the Bunch Formation podcast, Chris Veniti, to
- 23:53Speaker 2: help break it down. Chris, I want to start with
- 23:55Speaker 2: a basic question. Is anyone great in college football right now?
- 24:00Speaker 7: I don't think so.
- 24:02Speaker 8: We may rethink that at the end of the year
- 24:04Speaker 8: because we remember last year we kind of felt like this.
- 24:06Speaker 8: Nobody's a great team. The next thing you know, Indiana
- 24:09Speaker 8: finishes the season undefeated. I do wonder if Miami could
- 24:13Speaker 8: get there, but they also, you know, had needed double
- 24:15Speaker 8: overtime to beat Florida State a couple of weeks ago.
- 24:18Speaker 7: So they have to play Notre Dame still.
- 24:20Speaker 8: We got some big games coming up, but only three
- 24:22Speaker 8: undefeated teams left. The fewest at this point in the
- 24:24Speaker 8: year in more than 20 years. It's a wide open race.
- 24:28Speaker 8: It's a lot of fun every week. I have no
- 24:30Speaker 8: idea what's going to happen.
- 24:31Speaker 4: All right, Chris, let's go to some situations in college football.
- 24:34Speaker 4: Which situation is the dicest situation? Oregon and Dan Lanning,
- 24:38Speaker 4: USC and Lincoln Riley, Michigan and Whittingham. Which is the
- 24:41Speaker 4: situation that you're most following?
- 24:44Speaker 7: I think USC.
- 24:45Speaker 8: I think that's the one most likely to potentially make
- 24:48Speaker 8: a change if things go south more than they have.
- 24:52Speaker 7: I mean, USC's 6-2.
- 24:53Speaker 8: The record looks pretty good, but the schedule is pretty
- 24:56Speaker 8: daunting there. Still to come, they finish with UCLA, the
- 24:59Speaker 8: crosstown rival, who's having a great first season. They're undefeated.
- 25:03Speaker 8: And it feels like a lot of the USC fan
- 25:06Speaker 8: base has just kind of given up on Lincoln Riley.
- 25:08Speaker 8: It's been so long. We've seen the same thing. Every
- 25:11Speaker 8: single week, they'll go out to a Midwestern team that'll
- 25:14Speaker 8: punch them in the mouth, and they don't have a response.
- 25:17Speaker 8: And we saw it again when they went to Wisconsin
- 25:19Speaker 8: and lost 24-7, despite giving up only like 200 yards
- 25:22Speaker 8: of offense to Wisconsin. It feels like a lot of
- 25:26Speaker 8: people around USC want to change. It's going to be
- 25:28Speaker 8: an expensive change if they have to fire Lincoln Riley,
- 25:31Speaker 8: a buyout that's potentially $ 60, $ 70 million. But that feels
- 25:36Speaker 8: like the most untenable situation.
- 25:37Speaker 2: At the moment.
- 25:38Speaker 4: Okay, Chris, could you see some type of situation? You
- 25:40Speaker 4: remember Jimbo Fisher at Florida State like nine years ago.
- 25:43Speaker 4: He saw the writing on the wall and chose an
- 25:46Speaker 4: exit strategy, air quotes, chose A & M. Could you
- 25:48Speaker 4: see Lincoln Riley looking at Baylor or other and saying, hey, look,
- 25:52Speaker 4: I want to jump before I get pushed?
- 25:56Speaker 7: I think it's very possible.
- 25:57Speaker 8: It's something a lot of people around the coaching industry
- 25:59Speaker 8: were talking about even a year ago when we thought
- 26:02Speaker 8: the Baylor job was going to open up. It ended
- 26:04Speaker 8: up not, and Lincoln Riley stayed another year, and he
- 26:06Speaker 8: signed the number one recruiting class. But fast forward a year,
- 26:10Speaker 8: and it feels the same. Baylor is open. It's a
- 26:12Speaker 8: job in Texas. Lincoln Riley's from Texas. TCU could also open.
- 26:16Speaker 8: Got to kind of wait and see there. And TCU's
- 26:18Speaker 8: probably a bit of a better job than Baylor. Those
- 26:21Speaker 8: are places Lincoln Riley feels like might fit. If things
- 26:25Speaker 8: go south at Texas Tech, I mean, Lincoln Riley went
- 26:28Speaker 8: to Texas Tech. He's friends with a lot of people there.
- 26:30Speaker 8: It feels like he may fit more naturally in Texas.
- 26:34Speaker 8: But also, if it feels like he's running away from something,
- 26:38Speaker 8: is he that appealing? It's been a decade. He hasn't
- 26:42Speaker 8: been able to figure out how to produce a defense.
- 26:43Speaker 8: His teams have been pretty soft. I don't know if
- 26:46Speaker 8: that will work or not, but it's something to keep
- 26:48Speaker 8: an eye on for sure.
- 26:49Speaker 2: I noticed you didn't mention A & M or University
- 26:52Speaker 2: of Texas there, which are also who knows, right? You
- 26:54Speaker 2: wrote on The Athletic that Texas could just as easily
- 26:57Speaker 2: win the national title or not be in the playoff.
- 27:00Speaker 2: That kind of sums it up. Chris, earlier in the
- 27:02Speaker 2: show I made an argument. If Texas loses a third game,
- 27:04Speaker 2: say at Missouri or at LSU, I think they still
- 27:07Speaker 2: have a case to be in the playoff because of
- 27:10Speaker 2: the strength of their wins. Do you think there's any
- 27:12Speaker 2: chance this year they'd let in a three-loss Texas?
- 27:16Speaker 8: Yeah, if there's any team that's going to have a
- 27:18Speaker 8: chance with three regular season losses, it's Texas. They beat
- 27:21Speaker 8: Ohio State. They beat Tennessee on the road. They just
- 27:24Speaker 8: beat Ole Miss, who's been a top 10 team. They've
- 27:26Speaker 8: got really good wins. And the losses are just not great. Oklahoma,
- 27:31Speaker 8: Florida at home. But I think we're seeing, we're going
- 27:34Speaker 8: to have just a lot more losses this year. The
- 27:36Speaker 8: SEC moved to nine conference games. You're going to have
- 27:39Speaker 8: a lot of, I think, nine and three and even
- 27:41Speaker 8: eight and four SEC teams trying to make a case
- 27:43Speaker 8: for compared to a Big 12, which had a bad weekend,
- 27:46Speaker 8: compared to a Big 10, which is not having a
- 27:48Speaker 8: great year.
- 27:49Speaker 7: And if there's anybody who's got a shot, it's Texas.
- 27:52Speaker 8: So that's why the Ole Miss win was so important,
- 27:54Speaker 8: because they still have a pretty difficult schedule to come.
- 27:57Speaker 7: They've got LSU.
- 27:57Speaker 8: They've got A & M game you never know. So
- 28:01Speaker 8: they can probably afford one more since they got that
- 28:04Speaker 8: win at Ole Miss. That's why it was such a
- 28:05Speaker 8: big game.
- 28:05Speaker 4: All right, Chris, let me go to Indiana and Michigan.
- 28:08Speaker 4: That was not a pretty game. That was a tough watch.
- 28:10Speaker 4: I sat through the whole thing. Josh Hoover, not a
- 28:12Speaker 4: good second half for Indiana, but they squeaked by. The
- 28:15Speaker 4: fact that Indiana beating Michigan at Michigan is not that
- 28:18Speaker 4: big of a story. It's mind-blowing for guys like us
- 28:20Speaker 4: who grew up in college football. Indiana, when you look
- 28:23Speaker 4: at them right now, can you still consider them a
- 28:25Speaker 4: national title contender?
- 28:28Speaker 7: I think you have to.
- 28:30Speaker 8: Just because, again, I don't think there's anybody who's far
- 28:33Speaker 8: and away. You're like, definitely these one or two teams
- 28:36Speaker 8: are far and away. I mean, we're six inches away
- 28:38Speaker 8: from Indiana being undefeated at the moment.
- 28:41Speaker 7: I do have concerns.
- 28:42Speaker 8: Josh Hoover is clearly not playing well. Indiana only threw
- 28:47Speaker 8: the ball twice after halftime against Michigan. One of those
- 28:50Speaker 8: was the interception, and one of those was in overtime.
- 28:53Speaker 8: And I think that's a mix of concerns about Hoover
- 28:58Speaker 8: and also believing Indiana's defense could win that game, which
- 29:00Speaker 8: they ultimately did, and Signetti played pretty conservatively. You're going
- 29:04Speaker 8: to need Hoover to be healthy. I think ultimately... With
- 29:08Speaker 8: the playoff, you see it a lot. When you get
- 29:10Speaker 8: toward the end of the year, who's the healthiest team?
- 29:13Speaker 8: It's kind of like you see in the NFL and
- 29:16Speaker 8: other sports now because we still got three months until
- 29:19Speaker 8: the national championship. So there's a lot of time still
- 29:21Speaker 8: to go. I think Indiana's got a real shot. Offensively,
- 29:23Speaker 8: I'm concerned, but that Michigan win was big because you
- 29:26Speaker 8: look at the rest of the schedule.
- 29:27Speaker 7: It's very manageable. It should be in a pretty good
- 29:30Speaker 7: spot to make the playoff.
- 29:31Speaker 2: What's happening to the quarterback play in the Big Ten?
- 29:33Speaker 2: I feel like we're getting into the dregs right now.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Does that mean that the Big Ten might not be
- 29:38Speaker 2: as good overall this year? because there's so many backups playing?
- 29:42Speaker 7: Well, it's right. It's everybody's hurt.
- 29:44Speaker 8: I mean, Ohio state's quarterback is probably out for the year.
- 29:47Speaker 8: Oregon's quarterback has been out. Illinois just beat Oregon with
- 29:50Speaker 8: a backup quarterback. Michigan state was on its third string quarterback.
- 29:53Speaker 8: UCLA is on its backup quarterback and then had to
- 29:55Speaker 8: use its third string quarterback.
- 29:57Speaker 7: It's just the injuries.
- 29:58Speaker 8: This is why, this is why they're throwing that flag
- 30:00Speaker 8: on the Jared golf hit yesterday in the NFL. Cause
- 30:02Speaker 8: everybody's petrified of getting injured. And it makes for some
- 30:06Speaker 8: pretty ugly football. It's why I still like Indiana. Their
- 30:09Speaker 8: quarterback is still standing. He's hurt, but he's there. And
- 30:13Speaker 8: we'll see how free he looks for Ohio State. Have
- 30:16Speaker 8: no clue what to expect from him. True freshman, three-star guy.
- 30:20Speaker 8: Beat out a former five-star who has been waiting a year.
- 30:24Speaker 8: Is that good or bad? Can you just hit the
- 30:26Speaker 8: Jeremiah Smith button and spam that a bunch of times
- 30:29Speaker 8: and it's enough to win?
- 30:30Speaker 7: I don't know. We'll see.
- 30:31Speaker 8: But that really kind of opens up the entire Big
- 30:34Speaker 8: Ten race. But it really does start with quarterback play.
- 30:36Speaker 8: The injuries are part of it. But Iowa's quarterback play
- 30:40Speaker 8: hasn't been good. Minnesota's quarterback play hasn't been good. It's
- 30:44Speaker 8: been a rough watch a lot of weeks.
- 30:46Speaker 4: All right, Chris, UCLA football, they followed the Indiana plan,
- 30:49Speaker 4: go to James Madison, bring in Bob Chesney. All is well.
- 30:53Speaker 4: It's a great story. It's not getting a ton of
- 30:54Speaker 4: coverage nationally because I think people still, they focus on
- 30:58Speaker 4: USC or the Raiders, other teams in L.A. How close
- 31:02Speaker 4: do you think UCLA is to getting a playoff spot?
- 31:05Speaker 7: Pretty close.
- 31:06Speaker 8: I mean, the schedule the rest of the way is
- 31:08Speaker 8: very favorable. I think one reason they haven't gotten as
- 31:12Speaker 8: much attention is because they haven't had that gigantic win yet.
- 31:16Speaker 8: They did beat Oregon, but Oregon has kind of fallen off,
- 31:19Speaker 8: and so it's not that great of a win anymore.
- 31:21Speaker 8: You know, they beat Michigan State. It was kind of ugly.
- 31:23Speaker 8: They beat Wisconsin. It's kind of ugly. Again, their starting
- 31:26Speaker 8: quarterback is out. But this is a great team defensively.
- 31:29Speaker 8: They're one of the best rushing teams in the country.
- 31:31Speaker 8: Wayne Knight is an extremely fun running back. So it's
- 31:35Speaker 8: going to build, and I think it will. It's possible
- 31:38Speaker 8: they trip up once or twice here because, again, you've
- 31:40Speaker 8: got a backup quarterback. These things can happen. But they
- 31:42Speaker 8: can probably afford a loss. They'll get in at 11-1.
- 31:45Speaker 8: It's very similar to Indiana two years ago. The first
- 31:50Speaker 8: year with Curt Cignetti.
- 31:51Speaker 4: We want to get you on record here before we
- 31:53Speaker 4: get you out of here. We like to say Tulane
- 31:56Speaker 4: right now has the best uniforms in college football. There's
- 31:59Speaker 4: open-mindedness about this. Where would you say, if not Tulane,
- 32:02Speaker 4: currently the best regular uniform in college football?
- 32:07Speaker 7: Well, it's not regular. I'm going to go New Mexico.
- 32:09Speaker 8: They wear the turquoise against North Dakota State on Saturday.
- 32:12Speaker 2: You were there.
- 32:13Speaker 4: It's gorgeous.
- 32:14Speaker 7: I was there.
- 32:15Speaker 8: It's a beautiful state, beautiful uniform, Route 66 helmet. They
- 32:18Speaker 8: don't wear it all the time, but they're wearing it
- 32:19Speaker 8: more frequently now. I love the New Mexico turquoise.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Oh, that's a great answer. Yeah, we don't really know
- 32:25Speaker 2: who's going to be the best team at the end
- 32:27Speaker 2: of the year, but we do know the best uniforms,
- 32:29Speaker 2: so that's important. Thanks, Chris.
- 32:32Speaker 7: Thanks for having me.
- 32:33Speaker 4: Yeah, he's got a good point there. New Mexico did
- 32:34Speaker 4: those throwbacks, Route 66 the other day with that powder blue.
- 32:37Speaker 6: Awesome.
- 32:38Speaker 4: Kind of like University of Houston when they do that
- 32:39Speaker 4: powder blue.
- 32:40Speaker 2: Very, very cool. Although, it is interesting. Chris nailed it.
- 32:43Speaker 2: It's chaos right now. I have no idea what to
- 32:45Speaker 2: expect in two months.
- 32:46Speaker 4: The other situation you and I were talking about is
- 32:48Speaker 4: Michigan football. They've got a coach. He was kind of
- 32:51Speaker 4: the band-aid there. Whittingham was the guy to calm things
- 32:54Speaker 4: down with the Sharon Moore situation. I'm curious if it's
- 32:57Speaker 4: a one-and-done situation. They say, like, look, thank you, coach,
- 33:00Speaker 4: for helping out the program. Here's some parting gifts, which
- 33:03Speaker 4: means a big check. And we have to reset this
- 33:05Speaker 4: program after a terrible year.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. It does not look good. All right, coming
- 33:09Speaker 2: up next, RG3 had a lot to say on the
- 33:11Speaker 2: Dan Patrick show today. We'll dive into it. Might have
- 33:14Speaker 2: the next Baylor coach. That'd be fun. Not so fast.
- 33:19Speaker 4: He was fun today, RG3.
- 33:21Speaker 2: RG3 was off the hook.
- 33:22Speaker 4: Yeah, he's lobbying for gigs.
- 33:23Speaker 2: I love it.
- 33:28Speaker 3: By the way, your alma mater needs a head football coach. Yep.
- 33:33Speaker 3: Are you interested? Yes. What you want me to say, Dan?
- 33:39Speaker 3: Come on. Listen, I got to give. Are you interested
- 33:43Speaker 3: in coaching Baylor? Yes, 100%. Okay.
- 33:47Speaker 6: And if Baylor wants to get back to winning and
- 33:50Speaker 6: have a university that isn't just respectable on the football field,
- 33:54Speaker 6: but the fans can be proud of, they need people
- 33:57Speaker 6: who know what it looks like to win at Baylor.
- 34:00Speaker 3: So, yeah, I mean, I would 100 percent be interested.
- 34:03Speaker 3: I've talked.
- 34:06Speaker 6: With the athletic director, who is a guy in Doug
- 34:09Speaker 6: McNamee that knows what it looks like to win at Baylor,
- 34:11Speaker 6: know how you have to win at Baylor and recruit
- 34:15Speaker 6: to Baylor to make those things happen.
- 34:18Speaker 4: Back on Not So Fast with Paps and Perloff, that's
- 34:20Speaker 4: the former Heisman winner for Baylor, Robert Griffin III, talking
- 34:24Speaker 4: about that. How serious do you think his answer was
- 34:26Speaker 4: about coaching Baylor?
- 34:27Speaker 2: You know, his tone looked dead serious to me. And
- 34:29Speaker 2: he even mentioned he talked to an official. But I
- 34:33Speaker 2: don't get it at all. Has RG3 ever called a
- 34:35Speaker 2: play in his life? Does he know anything about coaching?
- 34:37Speaker 4: I think we're in a different era. Ten years ago,
- 34:39Speaker 4: this would not be a thing. But now, I know
- 34:40Speaker 4: Deion did Jackson State first before he went to Colorado.
- 34:43Speaker 4: But Baylor is down, down. And I think what Dan
- 34:46Speaker 4: did there, he did the double ask. He asked him again.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Just to confirm.
- 34:49Speaker 4: To confirm that we're not just a throwaway line here,
- 34:51Speaker 4: but For RG3, there's no downside. And I like what
- 34:54Speaker 4: he said. He didn't just mention himself. He mentioned two
- 34:56Speaker 4: other candidates that would be good for the program. That
- 34:59Speaker 4: shows it's not just self-serving.
- 35:00Speaker 2: Well, I don't think there's any chance they would hire
- 35:03Speaker 2: Robert Griffin III to be their head coach. Because I
- 35:06Speaker 2: actually looked up the one player that has really done this.
- 35:08Speaker 2: Eddie George got a job at Tennessee State. But to
- 35:11Speaker 2: be at a school like Baylor, a Big 12 school,
- 35:13Speaker 2: a Power 4 conference, that's a huge job. You need
- 35:16Speaker 2: someone with experience. I think you're right. I think he
- 35:19Speaker 2: put it in other people. He is concerned about his
- 35:20Speaker 2: alma mater. But I would love for them to hire RG3. Obviously,
- 35:25Speaker 2: based on today's interview and every time I see him today,
- 35:27Speaker 2: he's a great soundbite.
- 35:28Speaker 4: If Dartmouth called to say JV basketball, we want to
- 35:30Speaker 4: bring Andrew Perloff back, you're saying yes.
- 35:32Speaker 2: Yes, I remember my coach at the time actually was
- 35:34Speaker 2: a volunteer, so I don't know if that was the
- 35:36Speaker 2: kind of job I want. But no, RG3, I like
- 35:40Speaker 2: his passion, but in reality, no, he's not going to
- 35:43Speaker 2: be the head coach. In basketball, he could, though.
- 35:45Speaker 4: Here's a little more of RG3. We asked about Dallas
- 35:48Speaker 4: Cowboys tonight. If Dallas loses to the Eagles, Eagles lose
- 35:50Speaker 4: to Dallas. But the Dallas side of this, expected to
- 35:53Speaker 4: be a good team this year, especially on offense.
- 35:55Speaker 2: What happens?
- 35:55Speaker 4: What's the fallout that the Cowboys lose on Monday Night Football?
- 35:59Speaker 3: Somebody's getting fired. It ain't going to be Jerry Jones, right?
- 36:02Speaker 6: So, I mean, if you can't, if you can't win
- 36:06Speaker 6: this game for the Cowboys, the Eagles are banged up.
- 36:09Speaker 6: They basically got nobody out there. No Jalen Hurts. I mean,
- 36:12Speaker 6: all their stars are dang. They're out of this game.
- 36:16Speaker 3: And I agree with you.
- 36:16Speaker 6: It is an elimination game, but the Cowboys can't just
- 36:20Speaker 6: barely win this.
- 36:21Speaker 3: They have to win in dominant fashion. And that's a lot.
- 36:24Speaker 6: Asking a lot for a team that truly has been
- 36:26Speaker 6: struggling from top to bottom, even Dak. Dak Prescott struggled
- 36:30Speaker 6: this season. But this game is served up on a platter.
- 36:34Speaker 6: So I just wonder, how are they going to screw
- 36:35Speaker 6: it up?
- 36:38Speaker 2: Well, I thought the Cowboys could never lose to the
- 36:39Speaker 2: winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers on that primetime game. I do
- 36:43Speaker 2: not see how they can lose this game. The Eagles
- 36:46Speaker 2: have about 30 guys. on their injury report, which is
- 36:49Speaker 2: crazy because only 22 guys play. This would be the
- 36:52Speaker 2: most inexcusable loss. I agree with RG3. Schottenheimer could be
- 36:55Speaker 2: in trouble.
- 36:55Speaker 4: Yeah, and two and four teams, like you said, once
- 36:58Speaker 4: you lose this game either side, you're out. But the Cowboys,
- 37:01Speaker 4: if they somehow miss the playoffs this season, they're going
- 37:03Speaker 4: to look at this division and say, J.J. McCarthy led
- 37:06Speaker 4: the Giants to this. How do we, with this offense,
- 37:09Speaker 4: not pull this out? All the trades they made on defense.
- 37:12Speaker 4: If someone's going to get fired tomorrow morning, it would
- 37:14Speaker 4: be the defensive coordinator. Is that fair? If someone was
- 37:17Speaker 4: going to be fired.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Yeah, that would make sense. But he's brand new. Christian
- 37:20Speaker 2: Parker used to be on the Eagles staff.
- 37:22Speaker 4: Easy firing. His car's still running.
- 37:23Speaker 2: I don't know. I feel like Schottenheimer could also be
- 37:26Speaker 2: in trouble. I kind of agree with RG3. This would
- 37:27Speaker 2: be another embarrassing... This would be the most embarrassing primetime loss.
- 37:31Speaker 2: Because it's not just the Eagles have a backup quarterback.
- 37:33Speaker 2: They have a backup of everything. And they have no incentive.
- 37:35Speaker 2: They're not playing for this year anyway. It makes no sense.
- 37:38Speaker 4: But you know what happens in this game. It's almost
- 37:39Speaker 4: like NBA games when they have all backups. And these
- 37:42Speaker 4: backups don't get a chance to play. All these backups
- 37:44Speaker 4: on the Eagles should not beat the Cowboys. But they're like, hey,
- 37:48Speaker 4: I don't know that. I never get to play. Let's
- 37:49Speaker 4: go and take these guys down.
- 37:50Speaker 2: Wait, is CeeDee Lamb playing? Is George Pickens playing? Is
- 37:53Speaker 2: Dak Prescott playing? They have zero excuse. They'll be major
- 37:57Speaker 2: fallout if the Cowboys lose.
- 37:58Speaker 4: We're bringing this back tomorrow if they win.
- 38:00Speaker 2: I mean, they're four and a half point favorites, which,
- 38:02Speaker 2: by the way, is not that many.
- 38:03Speaker 4: It's not that much?
- 38:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I thought it should be a little higher.
- 38:06Speaker 2: RG3 said not only do they have to win, they
- 38:08Speaker 2: have to win big.
- 38:10Speaker 4: They sure do.
- 38:11Speaker 6: All right.
- 38:12Speaker 2: Meanwhile, talk about a team that is headed in the
- 38:14Speaker 2: wrong direction. The Las Vegas Raiders lost four in a row.
- 38:17Speaker 2: Kirk Cousins was asked about his status on being the
- 38:20Speaker 2: starting quarterback for the Raiders.
- 38:23Speaker 5: You know, it's really the same every day that it
- 38:25Speaker 5: was in March or April. I mean, nothing changes in
- 38:28Speaker 5: the sense that if I'm not the best option, then
- 38:32Speaker 5: I don't want to be out there either. I want
- 38:34Speaker 5: our football team to have the best chance to win games.
- 38:36Speaker 5: And if the first OTA, if that had become apparent,
- 38:40Speaker 5: I would have been the first one to say, yeah,
- 38:42Speaker 5: you can't play me. So nothing changes, you know, and
- 38:49Speaker 5: the organization will do what they feel is best. But
- 38:55Speaker 5: I feel that, you know, Fernando's done a great job
- 38:57Speaker 5: and has a bright future ahead. And I'm going to
- 38:59Speaker 5: try to go out there and play as well as
- 39:01Speaker 5: I possibly can, help us win and give him a
- 39:03Speaker 5: great example to learn from until he does go out
- 39:06Speaker 5: there eventually.
- 39:08Speaker 2: Paul, do you own that shirt that Kirk Cousins is wearing?
- 39:10Speaker 4: Of course, you know I do. You know the answer
- 39:11Speaker 4: to that question. It's kind of a tweed-tartan mix. I
- 39:13Speaker 4: like what he's saying. I think if a 24-year-old quarterback
- 39:17Speaker 4: said what he said, we'd rip him. Kirk Cousins has
- 39:19Speaker 4: been through this so many times. He was brought in
- 39:21Speaker 4: to be a mentor, and he knew the writing was
- 39:22Speaker 4: on the wall. This season was a temp job no
- 39:24Speaker 4: matter what. He outplayed September, and exactly what we thought
- 39:28Speaker 4: might happen in October, it may not work out so well. Perloff,
- 39:31Speaker 4: I'm hearing from the control room, from the first episode
- 39:35Speaker 4: of Not So Fast, here's what one guy had to
- 39:37Speaker 4: say about the Mendoza situation. My prediction for this, I'm
- 39:41Speaker 4: calling my shot here on Not So Fast. By the way,
- 39:43Speaker 4: you're up 3-0 Not So Fast on me. I will
- 39:46Speaker 4: go week eight at the Jets. That is Fernando Mendoza's
- 39:50Speaker 4: first start. My guess is the Raiders will be under. 500,
- 39:53Speaker 4: well under. 500 at that point. You put them against
- 39:55Speaker 4: the Jets, who are not known for picking off people
- 39:58Speaker 4: a lot. Pretty decent defense, but that's your spot. Mendoza starts,
- 40:02Speaker 4: gets it for the rest of the season, unless something
- 40:05Speaker 4: good happens, like Kirk Cousins leading you to an above.
- 40:08Speaker 4: 500 record.
- 40:10Speaker 2: Oh, I remember. I actually was going to mention that.
- 40:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I wanted to make sure it got on air.
- 40:16Speaker 4: I pat myself on the back. I just tore my rotator.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Yeah, but by the way, the problem, and we mentioned
- 40:21Speaker 2: this back then, I remember the next thing we said
- 40:22Speaker 2: was like, the only thing is we bring in Mendoza,
- 40:24Speaker 2: and then we got the Niners and the Seahawks next,
- 40:27Speaker 2: which could be a pretty bad blowout for the rookie.
- 40:29Speaker 4: I think you have to put Mendoza in against the
- 40:31Speaker 4: Jets because if somehow Kirk Cousins goes to play the Jets,
- 40:34Speaker 4: throws for 280 and three touchdowns, now you're no longer benchable,
- 40:37Speaker 4: and you missed your window to bring in Mendoza. Your guy,
- 40:39Speaker 4: remember Case Keenum, I think it's 10 years ago, when
- 40:42Speaker 4: he was the quarterback of the Rams, and they bring
- 40:44Speaker 4: in Jared Goff. Jared Goff sat, I think, the first
- 40:47Speaker 4: nine weeks. Case Keenum started okay. Then they lost three
- 40:50Speaker 4: or four in a row. And once they're out of
- 40:51Speaker 4: that playoff picture, you pivot to Goff. I think it's
- 40:54Speaker 4: the exact same situation.
- 40:55Speaker 2: And Goff lost every game that year.
- 40:56Speaker 4: He sure did.
- 40:57Speaker 2: I think he might have won his last game. The
- 40:59Speaker 2: problem is that this confidence from Mendoza won't be high
- 41:03Speaker 2: after that Seahawks game. You saw what the Seahawks did
- 41:05Speaker 2: to the Chiefs last night. You sure you don't want
- 41:07Speaker 2: to wait on Mendoza? Because he's actually playing fine. I
- 41:09Speaker 2: would almost wait. The season's done. Let's face it. The
- 41:12Speaker 2: Raiders aren't going to the playoffs. I would wait to
- 41:14Speaker 2: get that Seahawks thing out of the way.
- 41:15Speaker 4: Mendoza is like a motivational speaker. You can't break his spirit.
- 41:19Speaker 4: He's going to lose a lot of games.
- 41:20Speaker 2: You can break his body, though.
- 41:21Speaker 4: Yes, but he's going to get rid of the ball.
- 41:23Speaker 4: You've got to bring him in. You've got to do
- 41:24Speaker 4: it against the Jets.
- 41:25Speaker 2: I don't think so. I think that is a bad situation.
- 41:28Speaker 2: And we kind of knew this coming with the Raiders,
- 41:29Speaker 2: but that was a good call by you.
- 41:31Speaker 5: All right.
- 41:31Speaker 4: Thank you very much. I made sure I cut it
- 41:34Speaker 4: this morning. I made sure it was on the show.
- 41:35Speaker 4: That's right there. Okay, the rando. Before we get done,
- 41:38Speaker 4: here's a random play from the game. Camp Scataboo, Giants
- 41:42Speaker 4: running back. Watch this play and watch the call on
- 41:44Speaker 4: this play. He was flagged for a personal foul. Here
- 41:46Speaker 4: you go, Pearl. Up the middle. Lowers his head. Drops
- 41:51Speaker 4: the defender in those awful Houston uniforms. He got called
- 41:55Speaker 4: for necessary roughness. Okay, in 2018, they made a new
- 41:58Speaker 4: rule in the NFL that the running back cannot lower
- 42:01Speaker 4: his head. Then they tweaked it in 2023. You cannot
- 42:04Speaker 4: lower your head and do forceful contact. By definition, is
- 42:08Speaker 4: this a penalty?
- 42:09Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, definitely. I was reading Terry McCauley wrote about it.
- 42:11Speaker 2: They kind of did exactly what the rule book says.
- 42:14Speaker 4: He's too good at what he does. So the running
- 42:17Speaker 4: backs lower their head all the time, but not with
- 42:19Speaker 4: that level of force and that knockout play. I think
- 42:21Speaker 4: it's the result that caused the penalty.
- 42:22Speaker 2: I don't think so. I think it's the style of
- 42:24Speaker 2: running because one of the reasons you have that rule
- 42:26Speaker 2: is the defender, if you're not going to call it
- 42:28Speaker 2: on the running back, then it's a helmet-to-helmet hit on
- 42:30Speaker 2: the defender. But the defender's coming in low. And then
- 42:33Speaker 2: Cam Scadaboo is forcing him to go to helmet-to-helmet contact.
- 42:36Speaker 2: So if you don't have that rule, then you would
- 42:38Speaker 2: have had to flag the defender for a helmet hit.
- 42:40Speaker 4: Cam Scadaboo's entire running career is based off this type
- 42:42Speaker 4: of hit. This is how he runs. He ran for
- 42:44Speaker 4: four years, five years of college. Sacramento State, Arizona State,
- 42:47Speaker 4: this is what this guy does. All right, coming up next,
- 42:49Speaker 4: the feel-good and constructive criticism. Your feedback to the guys
- 42:53Speaker 4: on Not So Fast. Stick around. We'll be right back.
- 42:56Speaker 2: How about Skadaboo, by the way, after being benched, come back.
- 42:59Speaker 4: Yeah, and do you see at the end there with
- 43:00Speaker 4: that last run? I thought he pulled up on purpose.
- 43:02Speaker 4: He had a little hammy pull.
- 43:04Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. I mean, this guy's lifespan. Welcome back to
- 43:08Speaker 2: Not So Fast. Okay, we have some very surprising records
- 43:12Speaker 2: when you look at the standings. We are going to
- 43:15Speaker 2: do a new segment, Paul, called Is This Team For Real?
- 43:18Speaker 4: Okay, by definition, does for real mean they're making the
- 43:21Speaker 4: playoffs after this hot start? Want to do that as
- 43:23Speaker 4: a litmus test?
- 43:24Speaker 2: No. Okay. I think it's for real. Basically, you know,
- 43:28Speaker 2: is their record a complete fraud?
- 43:30Speaker 4: Okay, so start with the New York Giants. The New
- 43:31Speaker 4: York Giants, nice win. J.J. McCarthy. Malik Nabors is healthy.
- 43:35Speaker 2: They're absolutely for real.
- 43:37Speaker 4: Is it more because of them or because of the
- 43:38Speaker 4: division around them?
- 43:39Speaker 2: It's them. I think Ed Houston, that win this week,
- 43:42Speaker 2: that was the most impressive win of the weekend by
- 43:44Speaker 2: far to me. The fact that they hung in there
- 43:45Speaker 2: against a desperate Texans team. and really played better on
- 43:49Speaker 2: both sides of the ball. And Abdul Carter was amazing.
- 43:51Speaker 2: I know when Brian Burns went out, you were worried
- 43:53Speaker 2: about the D-line, but, man, they look great. I think
- 43:57Speaker 2: this team, thanks to head coach John Harbaugh, is going
- 43:59Speaker 2: to win a lot of games. I think that they
- 44:00Speaker 2: are going to get this division in eight or nine.
- 44:04Speaker 2: That's real.
- 44:04Speaker 4: That's fine. It doesn't matter how you win the division.
- 44:06Speaker 4: And what's fascinating, if I said six weeks ago, J.J.
- 44:09Speaker 4: McCarthy is going to lead a team to the playoffs,
- 44:11Speaker 4: And you said, well, maybe it's going to be another team,
- 44:14Speaker 4: but you would have never picked the Giants. That's why
- 44:16Speaker 4: it's even weirder.
- 44:17Speaker 2: I do think J.J. McCarthy, they're going to get some
- 44:19Speaker 2: film on him. Defensive coordinators usually need about three games.
- 44:22Speaker 2: I don't think J.J. McCarthy is going to play as
- 44:24Speaker 2: well as he did Sunday all season long, but it
- 44:26Speaker 2: doesn't matter because they have a formula now where they
- 44:28Speaker 2: can grind it out and run the football and especially
- 44:31Speaker 2: if you get a good scataboo game and they don't
- 44:32Speaker 2: call personal fouls on helmet to helmet. I think the
- 44:35Speaker 2: Giants are for real.
- 44:36Speaker 4: Next team, Cleveland Browns. I'll go first. I think the
- 44:38Speaker 4: Browns have had some nice fourth quarter comebacks. Their defense
- 44:41Speaker 4: is very good. Deshaun Watson's kind of cleaned up his
- 44:44Speaker 4: on-field career a little bit. He's playing solid football. I
- 44:47Speaker 4: don't think they're making the playoffs. I think once it
- 44:49Speaker 4: churns through, these fourth quarter comebacks are going to go away,
- 44:52Speaker 4: and the rest of the division, the talented teams in
- 44:54Speaker 4: the division, will play out.
- 44:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I think they're for real. I think that they're
- 44:58Speaker 2: going to be in the playoff hunt. Now, make the playoffs,
- 45:00Speaker 2: I can't guarantee because you're right, the division is brutal.
- 45:03Speaker 2: I love BLT.
- 45:03Speaker 4: You've got to watch out for BLT.
- 45:04Speaker 2: I think they're definitely, they have four or five wins
- 45:07Speaker 2: easily on this schedule to me. Their schedule is super light.
- 45:11Speaker 2: So they've been feasting off the NFC South just like
- 45:14Speaker 2: everyone else in the AFC North is. I see a
- 45:16Speaker 2: lot of Ws on there. I think the Ws are
- 45:19Speaker 2: going to be hideously ugly, like 16, 13. But I
- 45:22Speaker 2: think they get up into the 8 or 9 win range,
- 45:25Speaker 2: which makes them a real chance for the playoffs. Listen,
- 45:27Speaker 2: they already beat Pittsburgh. I think they'll beat Cincinnati and
- 45:32Speaker 2: Baltimore on a given day because they always do. They
- 45:35Speaker 2: have a great defense, Paul. They've made a lot of
- 45:37Speaker 2: great draft picks. I'm very interested in this team. Now,
- 45:40Speaker 2: are they going to contend for anything? Absolutely not. But
- 45:42Speaker 2: it's ridiculous. They were losing all game to the Titans yesterday.
- 45:45Speaker 2: Their defense can really get after it. So we've got
- 45:48Speaker 2: to keep watching this because I'm into the Browns.
- 45:50Speaker 4: Okay, the Vikings are all defense, very little offense. How
- 45:53Speaker 4: sustainable is that?
- 45:54Speaker 2: That is not sustainable. See, I'm not into this team, ironically.
- 45:58Speaker 2: But listen, I never thought they'd be 6-0. Their upcoming
- 46:00Speaker 2: schedule is insane. At Lions... I mean, they're going to
- 46:03Speaker 2: be pretty big underdogs in that. Then they got the
- 46:06Speaker 2: Bills at Packers, at Niners. So 6-0 is going away.
- 46:09Speaker 2: The fact that they are the team that is challenging
- 46:11Speaker 2: the 72 Dolphins is hysterical. But they're going to come
- 46:14Speaker 2: back to the Pack. Now, here is the one thing
- 46:17Speaker 2: that they have. Brian Flores' defense will win a bunch
- 46:20Speaker 2: of games.
- 46:21Speaker 4: And, you know, they can go 5-6 the rest of
- 46:23Speaker 4: the way and get into the playoffs somehow.
- 46:25Speaker 2: So if you're defining this for real being in the playoffs, yes.
- 46:28Speaker 2: I think they have a great chance. They have, you know,
- 46:30Speaker 2: all the teams in the NFC North have that kind
- 46:32Speaker 2: of hard schedule. They are interesting, and they have those
- 46:35Speaker 2: great receivers. Why can't Kyler Murray just be a little better?
- 46:38Speaker 4: Yeah, it's all defense all the time. It's time for
- 46:40Speaker 4: a little bit of constructive criticism. Constructive criticism, your feedback
- 46:44Speaker 4: to us. Say what you want to say. Ask about
- 46:46Speaker 4: what you want to ask about. Here we go, Pearl.
- 46:48Speaker 4: What's the first one with constructive criticism?
- 46:50Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 46:52Speaker 4: Dan Campbell is still a madman, I guess. They win
- 46:55Speaker 4: in spite of him. He is awful. It's somewhere in between.
- 46:58Speaker 2: Yeah, so when you're talking about Dan Campbell, the Lions coach,
- 47:00Speaker 2: that's about going for it on fourth down. In the
- 47:02Speaker 2: fourth quarter, very, very critical game up in the air.
- 47:07Speaker 2: He goes for it deep in his own territory.
- 47:08Speaker 4: Yeah. I thought Dan Campbell was done with these. I
- 47:11Speaker 4: thought a couple years ago he learned his lesson.
- 47:12Speaker 2: What?
- 47:13Speaker 4: I don't want to be the guy who goes too far.
- 47:15Speaker 4: Let's win clean football games with our great offense.
- 47:17Speaker 2: He is foot on the gas pedal at all times.
- 47:20Speaker 2: It doesn't matter where.
- 47:21Speaker 4: In a good way? No.
- 47:23Speaker 2: Completely almost cost him the game there. The issue, obviously,
- 47:25Speaker 2: was the play call was terrible, too. It didn't even
- 47:27Speaker 2: have a chance. Next one. Here we go.
- 47:29Speaker 4: Constructor Criticism. They left J.J. McCarthy too much time. That's
- 47:32Speaker 4: from me. What if J.J. McCarthy turns out too good
- 47:35Speaker 4: and the G-men do in 2027? They would love to
- 47:38Speaker 4: have this problem if they have to decide between J.J.
- 47:40Speaker 4: McCarthy and Jackson Dart. Neither guy makes a lot of money.
- 47:43Speaker 4: I think each of them will make about $ 4 million
- 47:45Speaker 4: in the 2027 season. That means $ 8 million on the
- 47:48Speaker 4: entire quarterback position, and you have two guys. That's not
- 47:51Speaker 4: a bad problem.
- 47:52Speaker 2: You know, I was going to give you credit for
- 47:54Speaker 2: this because a couple weeks ago you said, ooh, they
- 47:56Speaker 2: might have an issue with J.J. McCarthy and Jackson Hart
- 47:59Speaker 2: in the offseason. I laughed at you. I literally laughed. face. Yes,
- 48:02Speaker 2: and I still think that there was good reason to
- 48:04Speaker 2: laugh at you, but now you're absolutely right.
- 48:06Speaker 4: I'm right for a week. I'm right for a week,
- 48:07Speaker 4: but we'll take it.
- 48:08Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll see if J.J. McCarthy comes back to life,
- 48:10Speaker 2: but he reminds me a lot of Jackson Dart. I
- 48:12Speaker 2: feel like his mobility when he needs it helps him
- 48:15Speaker 2: a lot, where Jameis Winston, I mean, we all love him,
- 48:17Speaker 2: but Jameis Winston couldn't move at all.
- 48:19Speaker 4: He's going to win for some team. All right, one
- 48:20Speaker 4: more constructive criticism, Pearl.
- 48:21Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 48:22Speaker 4: Beans or just a filler? Oh, this is a chili
- 48:24Speaker 4: and beans. Real chili, the fillers are different types of meats.
- 48:27Speaker 4: Try chili meat, stew meat chunks, and axis. I don't
- 48:30Speaker 4: know what axis is, but I would eat a bunch
- 48:32Speaker 4: of it.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Try chili meat.
- 48:34Speaker 4: Chili meat, like coarse ground beef. We'll keep an eye
- 48:37Speaker 4: on that story.
- 48:37Speaker 2: We had some amazing chili at DP Show last week.
- 48:39Speaker 4: We'll make some more. Here we go. It's time for
- 48:41Speaker 4: the feel good. You're going to like this one, Pearl.
- 48:43Speaker 4: Animals and basketball. That's your favorite two things in the world.
- 48:46Speaker 4: Here we go, Pearl. This is the otters at the
- 48:49Speaker 4: Oregon Zoo.
- 48:51Speaker 2: Wow.
- 48:53Speaker 4: With no regard for human life.
- 48:56Speaker 2: All right, that's pretty feel-good.
- 48:58Speaker 4: This is real. This is not AI. Yeoman's working the
- 49:01Speaker 4: post by the Otter.
- 49:03Speaker 2: Yeah, are we a show that shows a clip like.
- 49:05Speaker 1: This, Paul?
- 49:05Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 49:06Speaker 2: By the way, how about.
- 49:06Speaker 4: Traveling on that last one? He didn't control his pivot foot.
- 49:09Speaker 2: I feel like we had a lot of analytics, a
- 49:10Speaker 2: lot of good sports takes. Do Otters have feet? Otters,
- 49:15Speaker 2: I don't know if they have feet.
- 49:16Speaker 4: Animalytics, analytics, we have it all here on Not So Fast.
- 49:19Speaker 4: All right, tune in the day. Patrick Show tomorrow after
- 49:21Speaker 4: Monday Night Football and the Brewers tonight versus the Rays,
- 49:23Speaker 4: Game 3. We'll wrap that up on Dan Patrick's show.
- 49:25Speaker 4: Then come hang with us on Not So Fast. Enjoy
- 49:28Speaker 4: the football, enjoy the baseball.
- 49:29Speaker 2: Take care.
