- 0:00Tomorrow night, the Ice Bus visits Matthews Arena in Boston for starting a home
- 0:05and home with Northeastern Bob Joyce, we'll have the action. It's six forty
- 0:08five here along the Yukon Sports Network, the Varsity Network app out of the
- 0:12Varsity Network dot com. And if you haven't been on campus to the Tiscano
- 0:16Ice Forum, man, you got to go there because it's a great college
- 0:19place to watch hockey. I know, Dan, I know you're a football
- 0:22fan. You love baseball. How about hockey? Are you a hockey guy
- 0:25at all? Yeah, I'll get into it. You know the Messia Rangers,
- 0:34you know teams. They're the one that won the Cup for the first
- 0:36time in a long time, you know, when the Devils. Devils have
- 0:40had some good teams. Being from Jersey, I worked in Newark for nine
- 0:44years coach there, so I got some Devil games when they moved to the
- 0:48Crew, the Crew, so I like it. I mean, they're tough
- 0:52guys, and I have a great, you know, appreciation for for football
- 0:56players, for for for hockey players, for uh you for for combat sports,
- 1:02you know, for fighters, because you know the discipline of training.
- 1:06They're just how tough they are they you know, you see the hockey guys
- 1:08get their teeth, they're always hurt, but they play. You know,
- 1:12they show up. They compete football, you know, basketball. You know,
- 1:19they would always love the direction that that that we're going. No,
- 1:23and the most humble people I think of all the athletes are the hockey players.
- 1:27I've had a lot of great experiences talking to even the great ones,
- 1:32guys like Gretzky humble. It's amazing. It doesn't matter what they've achieved.
- 1:38They act like they're the guy next door. And it's amazing. I just
- 1:42wish more athletes than the other sports acted like that. Yeah, I mean
- 1:46they I mean the money now, the fame, the social attention, things
- 1:51are much different. But you know, you're you're and there's still some you
- 1:57know, old school you know players certainly in baseball and basketball. But uh,
- 2:05yeah, we love our you know, we love our our athletes that
- 2:07that do everything that they can to win and uh and then have a humility
- 2:13about it. Yeah. Before we leave the Creighton story, we got to
- 2:16talk about what happened after the game because it was a wild scene. You
- 2:22had tons of people on the floor. Uh, just tell me about when
- 2:27the game ends. When you start leaving and the team starts leaving, go
- 2:30to the locker room. Are you concerned about what's going on around you or
- 2:35did you feel somewhat safe that you know you're being helped out by the security
- 2:38people there. Yeah, I mean, I don't want to rehash it.
- 2:40I've done it. I've already kind of told the story of how I felt.
- 2:46I mean, I felt like like Circe in the Game of Thrones.
- 2:51I tweeted that, so that was that. That was how I felt walking
- 2:55through the crowd. And it's not like that, I don't think obviously a
- 3:00providence. It's challenging, you know, because that's a very intense environment.
- 3:06And I honestly would have said nothing about the evening uh and and how the
- 3:10crowd was not just on the way in, but again during the anthem and
- 3:15you know, at different points of the game in terms of just the crudeness
- 3:21of it. But you know, they they on social media, their fans
- 3:25or their their their their their their fan account, which the worst thing on
- 3:30social media is, you know sometimes is the people that won't put their face
- 3:36and name and where they work up up up uh, you know, as
- 3:40their avatar. They hide behind like, uh, you know these accounts.
- 3:45But yeah, I mean if I would have said nothing about it, but
- 3:49they tried to go do it, I got you a moment with me.
- 3:52And you know, there's plenty of arenas where I have to uh, I
- 3:55hear a lot of things. I've heard it as a player, I've heard
- 3:59it as a coach my entire life. You know, ninety percent of the
- 4:01time I will not react, you know, but sometimes some environments, you
- 4:08know, caused me to react in a way that I think is fitting for
- 4:11the people I'm dealing with. Yeah, you know. And in talking to
- 4:15the head of security there after everyone was cleared out of there, he mentioned
- 4:18to me that, you know what, we do not want any of our
- 4:23people, fans, spectators, students, whatever, dropping f bombs on people
- 4:28from the stands, coaches, players, any of that stuff. They try
- 4:31to eliminate that. But I do think you get a crowd of eighteen thousand
- 4:34and that kind of a frenzy, it's really hard to control all of them,
- 4:39isn't it. Well, I mean it is. Since I've been here,
- 4:44We've I know that, you know. James Buckknight was was ejected from
- 4:48his courtside seat for talking a little bit of crap to an Xavier player.
- 4:54I know that. You know, there was a there was a chant I
- 4:59think maybe maybe an f and Cooley chant that started, you know where you
- 5:05know, people involved with that, We're thrown out of the arena. Here
- 5:10at Yukon's. You know, our crowd is loud, they're passionate, they
- 5:14boo, they cheer, They're into the game, you know. But I
- 5:17don't think that people leave here, uh you know feeling you know that that
- 5:23it was a volatile drunken you know, just uh yeah, but that's that's
- 5:30Yukon. No. I agree. I think there are a place like Yukon.
- 5:34There's a respect for the entire environment, right, the energy, the
- 5:40competition of it all. Some places, I mean, how to explain wake
- 5:43for is going off like that and the and the kid from Duke getting injured
- 5:46in that meatily I mean that scared me just looking at it. I know
- 5:51I'm his coach, and what I'd be doing right now. Yeah, we
- 5:55have smart fans, you know, we have smart fans. They've you know,
- 5:58they've been around for or you know, five national championships on the men's
- 6:01side, and eleven or whatever it is. On the women's side, and
- 6:05they've seen some of the best players and men's and women's basketball, So you
- 6:10know, I don't think that they don't become obsessed with other teams, coaches
- 6:15or players, and you know, they go to the game to support their
- 6:19team, to boo, to cheer, to make an impact. But I
- 6:24just don't think our fans like obsess over what coaches come in here. You
- 6:29know, they you know, they love their team and they support their championship
- 6:32teams. Yeah. Yeah, I think that's the way to go for sure.
- 6:35All right, let's get the villain over here. Because you come off
- 6:39a loss for the first time in two months. The way teams respond to
- 6:44that is always important. We talked about it before the game. You thought
- 6:47that the guys really reacted well in preparation. When the game started, did
- 6:53you know right away, Okay, we're back on our we're back on the
- 6:57beam, we're back in our groove, We're back where we should be.
- 7:00The psychology of of you know, coming off of a loss, I think
- 7:04it's uh, you know, when you had the total kind of breakdown that
- 7:09we had there, I think or any type of loss, it's it's jarring
- 7:15and and you know that sometimes you say as good as good as season as
- 7:18you're having, you know, there's some feeling of like this can happen again
- 7:24easily. Uh So it's crazy how it how it could shift, you know,
- 7:29But I think that's your way of you know, fight or flight in
- 7:30terms of your mindset as a coach. Like I think you just you become
- 7:38so aware of all your weaknesses that just caused the defeat that you go into
- 7:42overdrive to shore things up. And and you know, team had two really
- 7:46good days of practice and uh, you know, and and and play.
- 7:49You know, not that we were perfect, you know, we we we
- 7:53you know, we got up double digits in the second half and let them
- 7:57back in cut it to five, and we you know, teams to make
- 8:00runs. But you know, we didn't play perfect game, but it would
- 8:01certainly looked more like us. Yeah, we'll talk about a couple of the
- 8:05stars of that game, Cam Spencer, Tristan Newton, and Tristan will be
- 8:09with us on the show in a few moments as well as we continue with
- 8:13Dan Hurley. This is the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show on lear Field
