• 2:19
Speaker 2: are everywhere. I saw him on my drive down Virginia
• 2:22
Speaker 2: Street this morning about seven. We'll talk to the chief
• 2:24
Speaker 2: of Stafford Mayor a good one, Matt Sutton about that
• 2:26
Speaker 2: coming up later on. Also, Ashley offered Glance for the
• 2:29
Speaker 2: Putnam County Chamber of Commerce is here. They had their
• 2:31
Speaker 2: annual golf tournament coming up next week. Also going to
• 2:34
Speaker 2: talk to her about some other events going on to
• 2:36
Speaker 2: Putnam County and the continued growth in the county as well.
• 2:40
Speaker 2: The West Virginia baseball team set to face off against
• 2:42
Speaker 2: Troy again the College World Series in Omaha. That game
• 2:46
Speaker 2: set for just after two o'clock or so this afternoon.
• 2:49
Speaker 2: We'll get into that a little bit later on, and
• 2:51
Speaker 2: your calls and text are welcome to I want to
• 2:53
Speaker 2: welcome to the show now. West Virginia Attorney General J. B. Mccusky,
• 2:56
Speaker 2: good morning, sir, Welcome to the show.
• 2:59
  Speaker 5: Good morning Dave.
• 3:00
Speaker 2: Today, I am doing fine. Go Mountaineers.
• 3:03
Speaker 5: Yeah, let's go Mountaineers. You know, this is the way
• 3:06
Speaker 5: Unfortunately it goes for WVU, but I feel really good
• 3:09
Speaker 5: about them winning three in a row. This is a
• 3:12
Speaker 5: resilient team with a lot of senior leadership and an
• 3:15
Speaker 5: amazing coach. You know, we've got to do it the
• 3:18
Speaker 5: hard way, but we will.
• 3:19
Speaker 2: As a WVU guy that I know you are, I mean,
• 3:22
Speaker 2: this has been a great, great couple of weeks, this
• 3:25
Speaker 2: Mountaineer run, doing something new other Mountaineer team has ever done,
• 3:29
Speaker 2: and really jab capturing the imagination, the intention of America
• 3:35
Speaker 2: of this team. And I mean that that's not hyperbolics,
• 3:38
Speaker 2: that's true. This is what everybody's talking about.
• 3:41
Speaker 5: Yeah, And you know it's funny is that everybody forgets
• 3:43
Speaker 5: about WVU and we are a sleeping giant. And when
• 3:46
Speaker 5: WVU is good at sports, it's good for college sports
• 3:49
Speaker 5: period because we have the best fan base in the country.
• 3:52
Speaker 5: And you know, we're fun. We're fun at everything we do.
• 3:56
Speaker 5: And when our basketball teams are good, we play a
• 3:58
Speaker 5: fun brand of basketball. When our football teams are good,
• 4:00
Speaker 5: we play a fun brand of football, and our baseball
• 4:03
Speaker 5: team and our soccer team are both you know, first
• 4:06
Speaker 5: class now, and so you know, in this new world
• 4:09
Speaker 5: of college athletics, WVU is an absolute sleeping giant. And
• 4:13
Speaker 5: you cannot understate the incredible job that Ren Baker has
• 4:17
Speaker 5: done in building our athletic department in what is the
• 4:20
Speaker 5: most difficult and confusing time in the history of college sports.
• 4:25
Speaker 5: You know, without him, this could have gone the other way.
• 4:28
Speaker 5: But when you look at where we are, I think
• 4:30
Speaker 5: we are primed to be, you know, a leader in
• 4:32
Speaker 5: college sports going forward, and that's huge for West Virginia
• 4:35
Speaker 5: and it's really great for all of our student athletes.
• 4:37
Speaker 2: Talking again with Attorney General JB. Mccusky, I want to
• 4:40
Speaker 2: talk about a release which came from your office earlier
• 4:44
Speaker 2: this month. I found it very interesting, and it has
• 4:46
Speaker 2: to do with, in your words, the ability to sue
• 4:49
Speaker 2: and to stop any federal permitting project before state agencies
• 4:54
Speaker 2: that are involved in US have a chance to review it.
• 4:56
  Speaker 2: Explain that.
• 4:58
Speaker 5: Yeah, And just before I get into that real quick,
• 5:01
Speaker 5: I think there's one other ncublea thing that bears mentioning.
• 5:04
Speaker 5: So yesterday a coalition of Attorney generals along with the
• 5:09
Speaker 5: Big Twelve fought back against Texas Tech having Brandon Soresby
• 5:15
Speaker 5: on their football team. And to anybody out there who
• 5:17
Speaker 5: doesn't know what's going on, Brandon Swersby was a quarterback
• 5:20
Speaker 5: at the University of Cincinnati last year and he got
• 5:23
Speaker 5: caught gambling not just on sports, but on games he
• 5:26
Speaker 5: was playing in and Texas Tech stupidly went ahead and
• 5:31
Speaker 5: signed him to an NIL deal after he was banned
• 5:33
Speaker 5: from the NCUBLEA, etc. He got a fake injunction essentially
• 5:37
Speaker 5: from a Homer judge in Texas, but he has resigned
• 5:41
Speaker 5: from the Texas Tech football team amid pressure from a
• 5:44
Speaker 5: myriad of Republican attorney generals. Myself included in the Big Twelve.
• 5:48
Speaker 5: And this is a really good day for the nc
• 5:50
Speaker 5: DOUBLEA because we are saying to these billionaire boosters, you
• 5:53
Speaker 5: can't do whatever you want. You can't put people on
• 5:56
  Speaker 5: your team.
• 5:57
Speaker 3: Who bet on sports.
• 5:58
Speaker 5: And so I think that is it's a very big
• 6:00
Speaker 5: day and it's something that I worked with Ren and
• 6:03
Speaker 5: the Athletic department there about. So now back to this
• 6:06
Speaker 5: other thing. So the idea here, we have a national
• 6:10
Speaker 5: energy policy, and what the Left is doing is these
• 6:15
Speaker 5: people that have this irrational view of how our energy
• 6:18
Speaker 5: should be created. They believe that we should shut down
• 6:21
Speaker 5: every single carbon based fuel source in America today, and
• 6:25
Speaker 5: they believe that somehow or another, we're going to be
• 6:27
Speaker 5: able to generate enough electricity not only to meet our
• 6:29
Speaker 5: base loads now using windmills and solar panels, which is impossible,
• 6:33
Speaker 5: but also to meet the demand that is coming. More
• 6:37
Speaker 5: than three times more electricity needs to be created in
• 6:39
Speaker 5: this country over the next ten years than it's being
• 6:41
Speaker 5: created now to meet our data center needs, et cetera.
• 6:44
Speaker 5: And so what they do is they shut down the
• 6:49
Speaker 5: projects at the very beginning phases. After right there has
• 6:55
Speaker 5: been zero federal oversight. And so the idea is is
• 6:59
Speaker 5: that we want to make sure that FERK and our
• 7:01
Speaker 5: federal agencies who are charged with ensuring that we have
• 7:04
Speaker 5: rational energy policy that enables people to power their homes,
• 7:08
Speaker 5: to cool their homes, et cetera, are able to institute
• 7:11
Speaker 5: that policy beyond the grasp of these lunatic left wing
• 7:16
Speaker 5: greeno groups that are seeking to destroy basically American exceptionalism.
• 7:22
Speaker 5: And it's an important step and it's something that we're
• 7:25
Speaker 5: really really invested in making sure happens. Because a strong
• 7:29
Speaker 5: energy environment in America means West Virginia jobs, It means
• 7:35
Speaker 5: our economy continues to do the things that we know
• 7:37
Speaker 5: it can, because we are in a very prime position
• 7:40
Speaker 5: right now to really change the outlook for our state
• 7:45
Speaker 5: forever in this new world of data centers and power demand.
• 7:49
Speaker 2: And you've been kind of the lead on this, but
• 7:52
Speaker 2: there what I think a little over twenty other states
• 7:54
Speaker 2: involved in this, right Yeah, So.
• 7:56
Speaker 5: When West Virginia speaks on energy issues, the leading state
• 8:00
Speaker 5: follow with us. And that is something that we are
• 8:03
Speaker 5: enormously proud of in our office. Our solicitors team of
• 8:05
Speaker 5: Caleb and Michael and Holly are the best in the
• 8:08
Speaker 5: country and they are recognized that way by the leading
• 8:12
Speaker 5: lawyers in the space. And you know, when we speak
• 8:15
Speaker 5: and when we write, the courts listen to us, and
• 8:18
Speaker 5: so do my fellow Attorney generals who who are in
• 8:22
Speaker 5: this fight with me.
• 8:23
Speaker 2: Well to get I want to talk a little bit
• 8:24
Speaker 2: about the Save Women's Sports Act, Attorney General, A decision
• 8:28
Speaker 2: is expected I think soon in this West Virginia versus BPJ.
• 8:33
Speaker 2: That's Bey Becky Pepper Jackson case. This was the young
• 8:36
Speaker 2: person who has competed in won track and field events
• 8:40
Speaker 2: what's the latest there.
• 8:41
Speaker 5: Yeah, so we are waiting for the Supreme Court decision.
• 8:44
Speaker 5: As we know, BPJ competed in the state track meet
• 8:49
Speaker 5: and was the state champion in the shot put and
• 8:52
Speaker 5: finished third in the discus, And so this is meaningful
• 8:57
Speaker 5: and we believe that this case will be decided on Thursday.
• 9:01
Speaker 5: We will be getting a decision once and for all
• 9:04
Speaker 5: from the United States Supreme Court as to whether or
• 9:06
Speaker 5: not it is permissible for West Virginia to delineate its
• 9:10
Speaker 5: sports teams at a high school and middle school level
• 9:13
Speaker 5: based on sex as opposed to gender. And we are very,
• 9:17
Speaker 5: very bullish about our chances of winning, and we're looking
• 9:20
Speaker 5: forward to having won this fight and making sure that
• 9:23
Speaker 5: every woman and girl in West Virginia has a safe
• 9:26
Speaker 5: and fair place to compete and showcase their talents.
• 9:28
Speaker 2: And again, I think you said a decision is expected
• 9:31
Speaker 2: on this on Thursday, and this is one that the
• 9:33
Speaker 2: entire really the entire nation is watching to see how.
• 9:35
  Speaker 3: This goes forward.
• 9:36
Speaker 5: A big deal, Yes, sir, all.
• 9:38
Speaker 2: Right, I want to let you go because I know
• 9:40
Speaker 2: you've got some other things going on, but I do
• 9:41
Speaker 2: want to ask you you and your family going to
• 9:43
Speaker 2: get taken any of the bike events in Charleston.
• 9:46
Speaker 5: Actually no, my kids are at camp, so it is
• 9:48
Speaker 5: just my wife and me, which is I missed my children,
• 9:52
Speaker 5: but it is nice to have a little break. But
• 9:54
Speaker 5: we're actually up at the auto Dealers convention. So I'm
• 9:56
Speaker 5: here with our great friends from Moses and from Joe
• 9:59
Speaker 5: Holland and Chris Miller, et cetera, meeting with you. Know,
• 10:02
Speaker 5: these guys are are great community leaders and this is
• 10:05
Speaker 5: always a fun convention to get to speak at because
• 10:08
Speaker 5: of how much fun and how great all of our
• 10:10
Speaker 5: our local car dealers are.
• 10:12
Speaker 2: Attorney General J. M. Mcuskey, always a pleasure to have
• 10:14
Speaker 2: you on the show. We'll talk again soon, Prova. Maybe
• 10:16
Speaker 2: we'll get you back on on the network show on
• 10:18
Speaker 2: Thursday or so if we get a decision on that case.
• 10:21
Speaker 5: If we get a decision, Dave, I will be on

Speaker 10: of our folks at golf with us don't generally get
• 15:03
Speaker 10: to golf there, so that's a special treat as well.
• 15:05
Speaker 10: But we couldn't do it without the team there that
• 15:09
Speaker 10: work at Sleepy Hollow. They work really hard for us
• 15:12
Speaker 10: on Monday and make sure that the tournament goes off perfectly,
• 15:16
Speaker 10: So we are very appreciative of them.
• 15:17
Speaker 2: And of course, all the money raiins goes back to
• 15:19
Speaker 2: the programs of the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, and
• 15:21
Speaker 2: you folks just do so much for not only Putnham
• 15:24
Speaker 2: County but the surrounding areas. If people want to do
• 15:27
Speaker 2: sponsorship or they like they want to sponsor a hole
• 15:30
Speaker 2: or whatever, they just contact you. What's the best way
• 15:32
  Speaker 2: to do that.
• 15:33
Speaker 10: Yeah, they can contact me here at the office. They
• 15:36
Speaker 10: can call three four some five seven six y five
• 15:39
Speaker 10: one zero, or they can email us at Chamber at
• 15:41
Speaker 10: Putnam County dot org.
• 15:43
Speaker 2: You also have a State of the Valley coming up
• 15:46
Speaker 2: here real soon, and that's kind of a collaborative effort
• 15:49
Speaker 2: Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, the Huntington Regional Chamber of Commerce,
• 15:52
Speaker 2: and Charleston Area Alliance. And I will say, you must
• 15:55
Speaker 2: really be scraping the bottom of the bear with moderators
• 15:57
Speaker 2: if you ask me to do it this year.
• 16:00
Speaker 10: Yeah, your official announcement to the official announcement of Dave
• 16:03
Speaker 10: Allen moderating this year's State of the Valley. We're excited
• 16:06
Speaker 10: to have you. We're so fortunate to be able to
• 16:09
Speaker 10: get you off the air for a little bit and
• 16:11
Speaker 10: for a couple of hours. After a couple hours, we'll
• 16:14
Speaker 10: get you off the air, but put you still put
• 16:16
Speaker 10: you to work, I guess so. Yeah. August nineteenth is
• 16:19
Speaker 10: going to be the fourth annual State of the Valley
• 16:22
Speaker 10: with us and our neighboring chambers of Commerce. This is
• 16:26
Speaker 10: a this is a great opportunity for us as a
• 16:28
Speaker 10: region to collaborate that that's always since the initiation of
• 16:32
Speaker 10: this event, that has always kind of been the theme
• 16:34
Speaker 10: is how do we hear, you know, an I sixty
• 16:37
Speaker 10: four corridor collaborate together to ensure that, you know, all
• 16:41
Speaker 10: of our businesses are thriving. And State of the Valley
• 16:44
Speaker 10: is an opportunity for everybody in the communities to come
• 16:47
Speaker 10: together and kind of talk about the successes that are
• 16:50
Speaker 10: happening within our own within our own communities, as well
• 16:54
Speaker 10: as how we're collaborating on a regional level to ensure
• 16:57
Speaker 10: success here in the metro Valley.
• 16:59
Speaker 2: And let me just say this, if you're in the
• 17:00
Speaker 2: business community or concerned about you got to attend this event.
• 17:05
Speaker 2: And I mean I haven't got to attend to the
• 17:08
Speaker 2: last couple of years because of work, but I have
• 17:09
Speaker 2: attended it in the past and it is absolutely phenomenal.
• 17:13
Speaker 2: I mean, it pretty much sells out every year. So
• 17:16
  Speaker 2: if you haven't, I mean, I'm presuming now, because it's
• 17:18
Speaker 2: not to August nineteenth, Ashley, I'm presuming that there are
• 17:20
  Speaker 2: still tickets.
• 17:21
Speaker 10: Available right there are, Yeah, So the individual tickets are
• 17:24
Speaker 10: available now as well as sponsorships are available. Now. You
• 17:29
Speaker 10: can do sponsorships of a half table, a whole table,
• 17:33
Speaker 10: or some higher level sponsorships of the event, which are
• 17:35
Speaker 10: great promotional opportunities. As you mentioned, Dave, the event does
• 17:38
Speaker 10: sell out, so this is a great opportunity to get
• 17:41
Speaker 10: your name in front of the business community through the
• 17:44
Speaker 10: metro valley at this event. And so if you are
• 17:48
Speaker 10: interested in learning more about that, and you can reach
• 17:51
Speaker 10: out to the chamber in which you're part of, whether
• 17:53
Speaker 10: that's Puntington, Putnam or Charleston, or if you are a
• 17:58
Speaker 10: part of all three, you can just reach out to
• 18:00
Speaker 10: whoever you know, whoever's numbers quickest to dial. But you
• 18:05
Speaker 10: can find out more at Putnam Chamber dot org slash
• 18:08
Speaker 10: State of the Valley is where you'll find all that info.
• 18:12
Speaker 2: And it really is an interesting event because it's one
• 18:14
Speaker 2: of the only events like this that you have all
• 18:16
Speaker 2: three of these groups, the Huntingtonary Chamber Commerce, the Putnam
• 18:20
Speaker 2: County Chamber Commerce, and the Charleston Airy Alliance all coming together.
• 18:23
Speaker 2: There's elected officials there, it's networking and it's not going
• 18:26
Speaker 2: to take up your whole day. That's I mean, because
• 18:28
Speaker 2: basically it's a luncheon and then there'll be panel discussions,
• 18:31
Speaker 2: and as I said, I'm going to be moderating that
• 18:32
Speaker 2: on August nineteenth. So it's a rare opportunity if you
• 18:35
Speaker 2: do business in the Advantage Valley, the Vantage Corridor, whatever
• 18:39
Speaker 2: you want to call it, Ashley, it's a rare opportunity
• 18:41
Speaker 2: to have everybody in one spot.
• 18:44
Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, it is. We We do try to collaborate
• 18:48
Speaker 10: and partner as much as we possibly can, but this
• 18:51
Speaker 10: is our largest event to be able to do so.
• 18:53
Speaker 10: So we have, like I said, we've got all three
• 18:56
Speaker 10: chambers here from Huntington all the way to Charleston working together,
• 19:01
Speaker 10: and we'll have representatives on the panel from each of
• 19:04
Speaker 10: those communities kind of talking about updates of what's going
• 19:07
Speaker 10: on and celebrating some successes and again, like I said,
• 19:11
Speaker 10: talking about that sphere of collaboration, which is really important
• 19:15
Speaker 10: to all three of our chambers.
• 19:16
Speaker 2: Talking again with actually offered glance for the Putnam County
• 19:18
Speaker 2: Chamber of Commerce. So Dave Island Show in five eighty Live,
• 19:21
Speaker 2: brought to you in part by Morgan to Morgan. If
• 19:23
Speaker 2: You're injured higher Morgan to Morgan, America's largest injury law firm, Ashley,
• 19:26
Speaker 2: what I've got you, I want to talk about the
• 19:27
Speaker 2: continued growth in Putnam County because it has been an
• 19:30
Speaker 2: area that's been on the move for a long time now.
• 19:33
Speaker 2: We saw it really in the nineties and two thousands,
• 19:36
Speaker 2: and it continues to do that. And man, it's like
• 19:38
Speaker 2: that on steroids every time you drive down Tay's Valley
• 19:41
Speaker 2: Road right now, with the houses that are going up,
• 19:43
Speaker 2: housing developments from everywhere from Hurricane to Winfield in between.
• 19:48
Speaker 2: You know, constant business openings over there. I mean, it's
• 19:52
Speaker 2: it's it's really on the move right now. Putnam County.
• 19:55
Speaker 10: Yeah, we're very fortunate that people really enjoy the quality
• 19:59
Speaker 10: of life that we provide here in Putnam County, as
• 20:02
Speaker 10: well as the opportunity to establish a business and to
• 20:06
Speaker 10: grow a business. Being here in that I sixty four
• 20:09
Speaker 10: corridor and in the center of it has always really
• 20:11
Speaker 10: been our catalyst for growth because folks can live here
• 20:16
Speaker 10: and maybe commute into Charles Center and Honeyton for work.
• 20:19
Speaker 10: But what we're actually seeing now, which is a little
• 20:22
Speaker 10: bit different, is more people are living here and working here.
• 20:25
Speaker 10: So when you you know, reference the nineties and people
• 20:28
Speaker 10: kind of talking about living here that we did see
• 20:32
Speaker 10: a huge boom and we actually celebrated our in the nineties,
• 20:37
Speaker 10: our fiftieth about fifty thousandth resident in Putnam County back
• 20:43
Speaker 10: then and now we're up close to sixty thousand. Actually,
• 20:47
Speaker 10: I had been looking through some historic information through some
• 20:50
Speaker 10: of our stuff for the Chamber and found a news
• 20:52
Speaker 10: article about that, which I thought was interesting and a
• 20:55
Speaker 10: fun way to showcase the growth. But back in the nineties, know,
• 21:00
Speaker 10: a lot of folks were moving here because they were
• 21:01
Speaker 10: working in Charleston or they were working in Huntington and
• 21:04
Speaker 10: it was a nice, easy commute to get there. And
• 21:06
Speaker 10: now the growth that we're seeing is a little bit
• 21:08
Speaker 10: different in that people are moving here to also work here.
• 21:12
Speaker 2: Wow, and have you got some of the best schools
• 21:14
Speaker 2: anywhere in the state of West Virginia that are there?
• 21:16
Speaker 2: That doesn't hurt no.
• 21:18
Speaker 10: That is one of our main main selling points and
• 21:21
Speaker 10: one of the main reasons people do do desire to
• 21:24
Speaker 10: live here in Putnam County is to gain access to
• 21:26
Speaker 10: our Punta County school system and a lot of the
• 21:27
Speaker 10: other assets that we have available for families such as
• 21:31
Speaker 10: recreation parks, outdoor activities, sports, whatever it is that they're
• 21:36
Speaker 10: interested in outside of you know, school and work. Being
• 21:40
Speaker 10: able to have all that asset close to home.
• 21:41
  Speaker 6: You know.
• 21:42
Speaker 10: One of the things that I always say is that
• 21:44
Speaker 10: we have we have everything you need here in Putnam
• 21:48
Speaker 10: County and access to everything that you want, meaning that
• 21:51
Speaker 10: everything that you need on your daily life, you know,
• 21:54
Speaker 10: wake up, work, go to school, groceries, parks, that kind
• 21:57
Speaker 10: of stuff, we have it all here. Doctors tell care
• 22:00
Speaker 10: all that you need is here, and then if you
• 22:03
Speaker 10: want to experience some other stuff, we have that close
• 22:06
Speaker 10: proximity to Honeyton and Charleston where you're going to find
• 22:09
Speaker 10: you know, like the Charleston Dirty Birds and the museums
• 22:12
Speaker 10: and things like that. Those assets are just just a
• 22:14
Speaker 10: short drive away. So that's kind of the motto that
• 22:17
Speaker 10: here the chamber we live by and that one in
• 22:20
Speaker 10: addition to why people want to move to Pundham County,
• 22:22
Speaker 10: it's the people, but that is that is one of
• 22:26
Speaker 10: the major selling points that continues to further our growth
• 22:31
Speaker 10: here in Punham County.
• 22:32
Speaker 2: And it was there was a time Ashley, You're right
• 22:34
Speaker 2: when people just saw it as a bedroom community. I
• 22:36
Speaker 2: mean people would get off on the hurricane or Taye
• 22:39
Speaker 2: Valley accident or living in Eleanor or Buffalo wherever they were,
• 22:42
Speaker 2: and they would go to Charleston, they would go to Huntington.
• 22:44
Speaker 2: Will a couple of things have happened. Number One, more
• 22:46
Speaker 2: and more people are working from home now. But number two,
• 22:48
Speaker 2: there are more and more people that are opening businesses
• 22:51
Speaker 2: that you know, and God bless hertain because we have
• 22:53
Speaker 2: a collaborative effort going on with Huntington and Charleston here.
• 22:55
Speaker 2: But I mean there's people that are choosing to live, work, play,
• 22:59
Speaker 2: and do everything in Putnam County.
• 23:01
Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, yeah, we you know, I think too. One
• 23:04
Speaker 10: of the things that is a little bit different here
• 23:06
Speaker 10: in West Virginia is that we are so kind of
• 23:08
Speaker 10: centralized in our thought about like you live in a county,
• 23:11
Speaker 10: you work in a county. Everything is about your your
• 23:14
Speaker 10: city or your county or whatever. And you know, if
• 23:16
Speaker 10: you go to other states and you go to larger cities,
• 23:18
Speaker 10: larger metro areas, or even if you go out to
• 23:21
Speaker 10: other places that are more rural that have like one
• 23:24
Speaker 10: larger city, they don't they don't really talk about it
• 23:26
Speaker 10: as far as you know, they don't know what county
• 23:28
  Speaker 10: they're in. They don't. That's yeah, I mean when you
• 23:34
Speaker 10: go like where, you know, where'd you just travel, Dave,
• 23:36
Speaker 10: didn't you go down to Georgia? Yeah? Did you know
• 23:39
Speaker 10: what county you were in? Well?
• 23:40
Speaker 2: I did. I was in Glenn County. But this just
• 23:42
  Speaker 2: because I'm a geek about stuff like that. I'm a
• 23:44
Speaker 2: geek about the average person who doesn't know that.
• 23:48
Speaker 10: Yeah, I can guarantee. You know, when folks are traveling,
• 23:51
Speaker 10: you know, they're they're going to a destination and whether
• 23:54
Speaker 10: that be a city or a specific thing, uh, you know,
• 23:57
Speaker 10: a specific tourism drawl or whatever it is, they're not
• 24:00
Speaker 10: really paying that close attention. So I think, you know,
• 24:04
Speaker 10: one of the things that that bringing it back to
• 24:06
Speaker 10: the state of the Valley is that we are really
• 24:08
Speaker 10: trying to focus on, you know, showcasing us as a region.
• 24:13
Speaker 10: And you know that you don't know you're allowed to
• 24:18
Speaker 10: leave the county line. You can go past it. There's
• 24:20
Speaker 10: no they're not going to give you a ticket. People
• 24:23
Speaker 10: do jokes that I don't leave my county, but I.
• 24:25
Speaker 2: Don't know how you would have county or that I'm
• 24:29
  Speaker 2: not allowed.
• 24:29
Speaker 10: I guess. But the reality is is as far as
• 24:33
Speaker 10: West Virginia is concerned, and as far as the southern
• 24:35
Speaker 10: part of West Virginia and the metro region of West
• 24:38
Speaker 10: Virginia is concerned. We are very fortunate to have the
• 24:42
Speaker 10: area that we do, to be able to help businesses
• 24:45
Speaker 10: grow and to help families thrive.
• 24:48
Speaker 2: And it is true what you said. I laughed about
• 24:50
Speaker 2: that about how West Virginians and and and and I
• 24:53
Speaker 2: think it's more of an Appalachian or maybe a Southern thing.
• 24:56
Speaker 2: We do have a tendency to know what county we
• 24:58
Speaker 2: live in. Because I was doing some prime with the
• 25:00
Speaker 2: folks a couple of years ago before I started this
• 25:02
Speaker 2: job with a small business administration, and I remember one
• 25:05
Speaker 2: of the people saying to me, this is the only
• 25:08
Speaker 2: area that I've been to that you all know what
• 25:10
Speaker 2: county you live in. And this lady was based out
• 25:13
Speaker 2: of the Philadelphia area. She said, most of the people
• 25:15
Speaker 2: I incount have no idea what county they live in.
• 25:17
Speaker 2: But this is something I guess we do in West Virginia.
• 25:20
  Speaker 2: Before I let you go, I know you're busy, I
• 25:21
Speaker 2: do want to ask you about business after Hours. There's
• 25:23
Speaker 2: a business after Hours coming up this weekend. It's celebrating
• 25:26
Speaker 2: celebrating a very very special company in Putnam County.
• 25:29
Speaker 10: Oh you know what, Dave, this, I'm so glad you
• 25:32
Speaker 10: we save time for this. We are celebrating on Thursday evening.
• 25:36
Speaker 10: We are celebrating fifty years of Randolph Engineering. The Rantoff
• 25:41
Speaker 10: family started their engineering firm here in Putnam County fifty
• 25:44
Speaker 10: years ago and we are so fortunate to be able
• 25:47
Speaker 10: to have them here and we're going to be celebrating
• 25:50
Speaker 10: with their business after hours on Thursday evening.
• 25:52
Speaker 2: And it starts at what time and it'll be at
• 25:54
Speaker 2: Randolph Engineering and will be at.
• 25:56
Speaker 10: Yeah, five o'clock at Randolph Engineering. They're office is on
• 26:00
Speaker 10: Tays Valley Road, and I'm forgetting I don't know the
• 26:04
Speaker 10: exact contr's find it on our web, Yeah Chamber dot org.
• 26:09
Speaker 10: All of our events are on our event calendar. So
• 26:11
Speaker 10: everything that you and I talked about today today, Dave
• 26:14
Speaker 10: is on there on the event calendar at Putnam Chamber
• 26:17
Speaker 10: dot org. If you are a current member or if
• 26:20
Speaker 10: you would like to explore membership opportunities here with the
• 26:23
Speaker 10: Putnam Chamber, we would love to have that conversation.
• 26:26
Speaker 2: Ashley Off for Glance, Executive Director, Putnam County Chamber of Commerce.
• 26:28
Speaker 2: Always a pleasure to have you on the show. We'll
• 26:30
Speaker 2: have you back on again as we get ready for
• 26:32
Speaker 2: the big event in August there okay, the state of
• 26:34
  Speaker 2: the Valley.
• 26:35
Speaker 10: Appreciate Gay all right, thank you.
• 26:37
Speaker 2: You as well. Nastally off for glance again, Executive director
• 26:40
Speaker 2: of the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, and that big
• 26:43
Speaker 2: that event that save the Valley is a huge event.
• 26:46
Speaker 2: If you get an opportunity, uh to join us for that.
• 26:49
Speaker 2: It's August nineteenth, and it will be at Valley Park
• 26:52
Speaker 2: and it generally speaking does sell out, so we want
• 26:55
Speaker 2: to make sure that you get your tickets for that early.
• 26:59
Speaker 2: Contacted folks that the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, and
• 27:01
Speaker 2: it is a unique event because again you've got the
• 27:03
Speaker 2: Chambers of Putnam County. You got the Huntington Area Chamber
• 27:09
Speaker 2: of Commerce, which is not just for Huntington. It's called
• 27:12
Speaker 2: Huntington Area for a reason, and they actually go actually
• 27:16
Speaker 2: a little bit outside even Cable County. And then you
• 27:18
Speaker 2: got the Charleston Airy Alliance and every elected official from
• 27:20
Speaker 2: the area. Most of them are there for this event.
• 27:23
Speaker 2: And as I said, maybe scraping the bottom of the
• 27:25
Speaker 2: barrel because they got me to be the MC or
• 27:27
Speaker 2: the moderator, so I'll be there for that on August
• 27:30
Speaker 2: the nineteenth, and they tell me. Because I was wondering
• 27:35
Speaker 2: first thing when Ashley asked me to do this. You
• 27:37
Speaker 2: know if I attended in the past, but I've never
• 27:39
Speaker 2: been a moderator. She I said, well, I'm on the air.
• 27:41
Speaker 2: She said, no, We're going to work this out. So
• 27:43
Speaker 2: I'm going to do the local show that day, head
• 27:45
Speaker 2: to Putnam County, do the event, and be back by
• 27:47
Speaker 2: two o'clock for the two o'clock hour. That's what they
• 27:49
Speaker 2: tell me. Unmatured, it's midday. That's not till August nineteenth.
• 27:52
Speaker 2: I got plenty of time to get all that figured out.
• 27:55
Speaker 2: Twenty four minutes away from ten Trojan Landy Marine and
• 27:58
Speaker 2: Power Sports, along with WR Media, Charleston presents the annual
• 28:02
Speaker 2: Ride and Riches event. Your chance to win a segue
• 28:04
Speaker 2: Ut six m side by side plus one thousand bucks
• 28:08
Speaker 2: in cash. Now you can Redsharet a variety of places
• 28:10
Speaker 2: here in the valley, Tractor pros being won, Billy Jerre Looms,
• 28:13
Speaker 2: the Pitch Sports Bar and Grill, a Game, Wellness Members Choice,
• 28:17
Speaker 2: Federal Credit Union, the Red Carpet Lounge, Running Boards, and more.
• 28:20
Speaker 2: Charleston Cut Flowers, Blanche's Diner, which is in Clindena, the
• 28:24
Speaker 2: Doughnut Connection, one of my favorite places in Cadaul City,
• 28:27
Speaker 2: Family Healthcare Centers of Charleston and Tays Valley, Marty Gras Casinos,
• 28:30
Speaker 2: Seventh Boutique and beauty bar Shuckers. Another one of my
• 28:33

Speaker 2: all three. Two of those three have already dropped, available

Speaker 2: To be sure and check it out. Available on Metro
• 32:30
Speaker 2: News Television and again. The third and final one will
• 32:32
Speaker 2: drop Thursday night at seven thirty I exclusively on Metro
• 32:35
Speaker 2: News Television, presented by Hope Gas and by Career Industries Texas. Dude,
• 32:40
Speaker 2: you failed in prov one oh one. You were supposed
• 32:42
Speaker 2: to do the yes and response to Ashley offered glances
• 32:45
Speaker 2: question about not knowing the county in Florida, not saying
• 32:49
Speaker 2: that you checked the county because you're nerd. Well, it's
• 32:52
Speaker 2: actually Georgia. And I did know what county I was
• 32:54
Speaker 2: in because I'm a geek about that. It's just my
• 32:56
Speaker 2: It's my thing, man, it's my thing.
• 32:58
Speaker 15: I thought the same thing, though, thought the same thing
• 33:00
Speaker 15: the TEXTRA did. I just said no, kind of ruined it.
• 33:03
Speaker 15: But I understand that. But I know who you are.
• 33:05
  Speaker 2: So I'm the I'm the kid that Matt's that's the
• 33:09
Speaker 2: voice of Matt Sutton by the way, that I'm the
• 33:12
Speaker 2: kid that, like you know, I've told the story before. Uh,
• 33:17
Speaker 2: when I was in elementary school, Matt, I was so
• 33:19
Speaker 2: bad at art, I mean I was terrible, could not
• 33:21
Speaker 2: draw anything that the teachers said, we're just gonna let
• 33:25
Speaker 2: David that was my name. We're gonna let David read
• 33:28
Speaker 2: encyclopedias and give him a bee in art. And my
• 33:30
Speaker 2: mom said, I'm okay with that. So like the first
• 33:32
Speaker 2: three years of my great you know, kindergarten through like
• 33:35
Speaker 2: fourth grade, I did no art. I read encyclopedias. So
• 33:38
Speaker 2: what does that tell you about.
• 33:40
Speaker 15: It seemed like could be a great story if the
• 33:41
Speaker 15: inding would have been you turned out to be an artist.
• 33:44
Speaker 2: Turn if I would have turned out to get a
• 33:46
Speaker 2: real job, you know, not talking.
• 33:48
Speaker 15: To talking on the radios and art, there's no doubt
• 33:50
Speaker 15: about it. But no, I was first of all, I
• 33:53
Speaker 15: enjoyed Ashley. I enjoyed that conversation because that that is true.
• 33:55
Speaker 15: It is a weird thing that about us in our counties,
• 33:58
Speaker 15: like and I think people even when we talked to him,
• 34:00
Speaker 15: you know, and it's it's funny even when folks coming
• 34:02
Speaker 15: to town and they're like, I'm looking for this building,
• 34:04
Speaker 15: I'm like looking for the city building and the county building,
• 34:06
Speaker 15: Like what's the county building?
• 34:07
  Speaker 3: It's right there.
• 34:08
Speaker 2: So well, and I do think it tends to be
• 34:11
Speaker 2: matt a Apalachic or southern thing too, because I've spent
• 34:14
Speaker 2: a lot of time in places far far more southern
• 34:18
Speaker 2: than what West Virginia is and it is. It's a
• 34:21
Speaker 2: big Now, don't try that in Tyler County. I just
• 34:23
Speaker 2: made that up, by the way, you know, I.
• 34:25
Speaker 3: Wouldn't try in Tyler County. Yes, it sounds right, all right.
• 34:28
Speaker 2: The USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships back at the
• 34:30
Speaker 2: Capital City. Matt Sutton the voice you've been hearing the
• 34:32
Speaker 2: chief of staff for Charleston Mayor Amy Schueler, A good one,
• 34:34
Speaker 2: he joins us this morning in the Jeneric Construction studios.
• 34:37
Speaker 2: Good morning, Sarah, Welcome into the show. You know, they've
• 34:39
Speaker 2: been pouring into town for the last couple of days.
• 34:42
Speaker 2: And I hit Virginia Street around seven this morning. There
• 34:45
Speaker 2: were already people everywhere this morning. And they've been been
• 34:47
Speaker 2: that way for the last couple of days.
• 34:49
Speaker 15: Yeah, I mean they came into town a little bit
• 34:51
Speaker 15: late last week, and then after live and a Levy
• 34:54
Speaker 15: on Friday, they began setting up immediately. You know, it's
• 34:56
Speaker 15: a big operation. Though, we feel much more comfortable about
• 35:00
Speaker 15: it this year. I remember sitting in the last two
• 35:01
Speaker 15: meetings and kind of, you know, staring around and the
• 35:05
Speaker 15: will who works for Metalist Cycling, and he would kind
• 35:08
Speaker 15: of say, was anybody have any questions, and everybody just
• 35:10
Speaker 15: kind of sat there because we've done this for the
• 35:11
Speaker 15: third year now and for the most part it's it's
• 35:15
Speaker 15: pretty much exactly the same, right, I Mean, the days
• 35:17
Speaker 15: have changed and some of the times, but the road
• 35:19
Speaker 15: closures are pretty much the same, the setup is the same,
• 35:22
Speaker 15: the races are the same this year without the the
• 35:25
Speaker 15: we took away one event from last year, and other
• 35:27
Speaker 15: than that, everything has pretty much remained the same. So
• 35:29
Speaker 15: our team is pretty well versed in how to set
• 35:32
Speaker 15: up I think the community is much more excited about
• 35:34
  Speaker 15: it this year.
• 35:35
Speaker 3: What we've seen is, you know, kind of the first year,
• 35:36
Speaker 3: we didn't know what was going to happen.
• 35:38
Speaker 15: We didn't know how, you don't know what, you don't know, yeah,
• 35:40
Speaker 15: and so it was one of those things to where
• 35:41
Speaker 15: we just focused on the race, making sure we could
• 35:44
Speaker 15: pull it off. Then last year we expanded a little
• 35:46
Speaker 15: bit more to the watch areas and having a few
• 35:48
Speaker 15: more activities, and then this year is really the focus
• 35:52
Speaker 15: I think is mainly on, you know, we can pull
• 35:54
Speaker 15: off the event, but having these watch parties and having
• 35:57
Speaker 15: the areas where people can celebrate cycling, being in town.
• 35:59
Speaker 3: Having June tenth in the middle of it.
• 36:01
Speaker 15: Having alive on the levee in the middle of it
• 36:02
Speaker 15: makes it really exciting for the entire city. It comes
• 36:05
Speaker 15: with the road closures. We all know that, and we
• 36:07
Speaker 15: know to be prepared for them. But it is one
• 36:09
Speaker 15: of those things where it has gotten to the point
• 36:11
Speaker 15: where after cycling stops, once we get into August, people
• 36:16
Speaker 15: will start to say, man, I can't wait for the
• 36:17
Speaker 15: bike race to come back. So it's something who's now
• 36:19
Speaker 15: become the fabric of a part of our town and
• 36:21
Speaker 15: we're really excited about that.
• 36:22
Speaker 2: Approximately And I know this is coming off the top
• 36:26
Speaker 2: rope with this, but I mean, exactly, give give me
• 36:29
Speaker 2: a ballpark on how many areas are represented? How many states,
• 36:33
  Speaker 2: how many countries? I mean, I know it's probably a
• 36:35
Speaker 2: good question for Tim Brady as well, but I mean,
• 36:37
Speaker 2: just if you had to guess, Matt, I mean, how many,
• 36:40
Speaker 2: how many different states? How many I.
• 36:42
Speaker 3: Don't know about countries.
• 36:43
Speaker 15: I mean I think most of most of the USA cyclings,
• 36:45
Speaker 15: I think it's mostly people. We have some North American Yeah,
• 36:48
Speaker 15: we have some North American athletes as well, but I
• 36:51
Speaker 15: think there was something like thirty five states last year
• 36:54
Speaker 15: where writers came from them.
• 36:56
Speaker 3: Number may be higher, but it's somewhere from there.
• 36:58
Speaker 15: I think it was it was over half the states
• 37:01
Speaker 15: that had cyclists participating. And then obviously you have staff
• 37:03
Speaker 15: come from anywhere. But as big a deal of that
• 37:05
Speaker 15: is is it's the visitors that come to town, right.
• 37:09
Speaker 15: So you know when the cycling the card last year,
• 37:12
Speaker 15: of all the spending that it cared and Charleston during
• 37:14
Speaker 15: those days, thirteen percent was from people who were fifty
• 37:16
Speaker 15: miles away or more. So you can see that kind
• 37:18
Speaker 15: of spending and that kind of visitor activity is what's
• 37:21
Speaker 15: important to us and really creates an exciting event because
• 37:26
Speaker 15: as we've said, the mayor set a million times, we've
• 37:28
Speaker 15: all said it. Secretary of Ruby says that, Governor Morrissey
• 37:31
Speaker 15: says it's center, or Justice says it. Everybody says that
• 37:33
Speaker 15: if we can get people to visit West Virginia once,
• 37:34
Speaker 15: we'll get them to come back. And that's what something
• 37:37
Speaker 15: like USA Cycling does and we've been really proud of.
• 37:39
Speaker 15: And it's also something that is it's important that people
• 37:43
Speaker 15: get to see and experience our city because it leads
• 37:46
Speaker 15: to other events. And I know Tim says this all
• 37:48
Speaker 15: the time, but it really is the hospitality that Charleston
• 37:51
Speaker 15: and West Virginia show to these national events when they
• 37:53
Speaker 15: come here leads to more events because these folks talk
• 37:56
Speaker 15: to each other and it does lead to other things.
• 37:58
Speaker 15: Right after USA Cycling lead, USA Gymnastics comes to the
• 38:01
Speaker 15: Colisemic Convention Center, and that's a direct result from our
• 38:03
Speaker 15: relationship with USA Cycling and how this works.
• 38:05
Speaker 2: To talk about that, because this is a fascinating story
• 38:08
Speaker 2: about how you got the gymnastics. I mean, based on
• 38:11
Speaker 2: the bike event, what.
• 38:12
Speaker 15: Actually all goes back to if you remember, we got
• 38:15
Speaker 15: a USA Junior table Tennis event somewhere, remember, and it
• 38:18
Speaker 15: kind of it goes all the way back to that.
• 38:20
Speaker 15: It actually goes back a little bit further than that
• 38:21
Speaker 15: with USA Volleyball being in conjunction with that and an
• 38:24
Speaker 15: event with I think wrestling that we didn't get. But
• 38:27
Speaker 15: it's one of those things where you start to build
• 38:29
Speaker 15: these relationships. It is a small community. These events that
• 38:32
Speaker 15: travel all over the place. They talk to each other
• 38:34
Speaker 15: and they get to experience things in Charleston that they
• 38:36
Speaker 15: don't get the experience everywhere else. You know, it's it's
• 38:39
Speaker 15: not everywhere where your mayor helped set up the barricades
• 38:42
Speaker 15: for the cycling event. Right, it's not everywhere where the
• 38:44
Speaker 15: first people shaking the cow bell that's standing in the
• 38:47
Speaker 15: middle when the cyclists come down, our city council members
• 38:49
Speaker 15: and you have. You know, it's important when folks who
• 38:51
Speaker 15: are in city council.
• 38:52
  Speaker 3: Or even our.
• 38:53
Speaker 15: County commissioners and our mayor are standing there thanking our
• 38:56
Speaker 15: sponsors like that's part of their job and that's part
• 38:58
Speaker 15: of something that makes us a special place. So when
• 39:01
Speaker 15: we have these relationships and we build them, it only
• 39:03
Speaker 15: leads to next event. So USA table tennis leads to volleyball,
• 39:07
Speaker 15: leads to cycling, now leads to gymnastics, and it's just
• 39:10
Speaker 15: going to continue to continue to grow and continue to
• 39:12
Speaker 15: grow because we are centrally located. We are perfectly located
• 39:16
Speaker 15: in the country for these type of events. Not only that,
• 39:19
Speaker 15: but we are you know, we have what these events love,
• 39:22
Speaker 15: which is sort of the lack of better term called
• 39:24
Speaker 15: the park and play mentality where they can just park
• 39:26
Speaker 15: their car, stay in their hotel, enjoy the restaurants, enjoy shopping,
• 39:29
Speaker 15: and have their events. So if you're downtown, the cyclists
• 39:33
Speaker 15: or the people who run the event, they can stay
• 39:35
Speaker 15: right in the four points they walk right out their
• 39:36
Speaker 15: front door of the hotel and they're at the start
• 39:38
Speaker 15: finish line and all of the logistics are right there.
• 39:40
Speaker 15: They never have to get back in their car once
• 39:42
Speaker 15: they leave here until they go, you know, run the route.
• 39:45
Speaker 15: You have cyclists who can move around town very easily.
• 39:47
Speaker 15: They're staying with residents, they stay in airbnb's, they stay
• 39:50
Speaker 15: in hotels, and they can move around town easily and
• 39:52
Speaker 15: they don't ever have to worry about getting their car.
• 39:54
Speaker 3: It's not expensive place, you know.
• 39:57
Speaker 15: I always tell a story when we were pitching when
• 39:59
Speaker 15: USA Volleyball pitching, they had when they were in Chicago,
• 40:01
  Speaker 15: I think it.
• 40:02
Speaker 3: Was Chicago a few years before that.
• 40:03
Speaker 15: They had a two hundred thousand dollars transportation budget once
• 40:06
Speaker 15: they got to the city of Chicago just getting the
• 40:08
Speaker 15: athletes from their hotels in the bushes on the South Yeah,
• 40:12
Speaker 15: and in Charleston it was zero because they just parked
• 40:14
Speaker 15: their car, stayed at the Marriott, stayed at the Embassy,
• 40:16
Speaker 15: and just walked to the coliseumic Convention Center.
• 40:18
Speaker 3: So it's the kind of things that we have.
• 40:20
Speaker 15: But we've got to be able to have those relationships
• 40:22
Speaker 15: to get here, and that's why it is so important
• 40:24
Speaker 15: that we have, you know, places like the CVB with
• 40:26
Speaker 15: Tim and Jama and Lauren and their entire team. We
• 40:29
Speaker 15: have a mayor who's willing to meet with these folks
• 40:31
Speaker 15: prior to the event and help with the event. We
• 40:33
Speaker 15: have a city team, We have city council members who
• 40:35
Speaker 15: walk around they thank sponsors.
• 40:36
Speaker 3: That's not just cycling.
• 40:37
  Speaker 15: That's cycling, that's Regatta, that's you know, Juneteenth, that's multifest.
• 40:42
Speaker 15: When you have people who are leaders in our community
• 40:44
Speaker 15: participated in the events, that stuff matters and people recognize that.
• 40:47
Speaker 15: I promise you they recognize that because they tell us
• 40:49
Speaker 15: they do and it's meaningful to them. So when you
• 40:51
Speaker 15: have sponsors who say, yeah, it was really nice to
• 40:53
Speaker 15: get to meet city council members, or when you have
• 40:56
Speaker 15: an event host two says man, we've never met with
• 40:59
Speaker 15: a mayor before. That kind of stuff sticks with them
• 41:01
Speaker 15: and they'll go back and they'll tell their friends who
• 41:02
Speaker 15: do similar things. And we've seen it work. It's not
• 41:04
Speaker 15: a theory. It's actually worked over the last three years.
• 41:07
Speaker 2: And the people in Charleston, the people that live in Charleston,
• 41:09
Speaker 2: the people that work in Charleston, they all want to know,
• 41:12
Speaker 2: how does this impact me, and it would be impossible
• 41:14
Speaker 2: for us on the radio to perfectly explain it. That's
• 41:17
Speaker 2: why you know, you've got websites, why you get social
• 41:20
Speaker 2: media and so on and so forth. But just take
• 41:22
Speaker 2: us through today. I mean, like, as I said, I
• 41:24
Speaker 2: pulled into Charleston about seven o'clock this morning, so a
• 41:26
Speaker 2: couple of side streets were already blocked off. The boulevard
• 41:28
Speaker 2: was blocked off. No problems on Virginia Street or Corey
• 41:31
Speaker 2: or any any of those.
• 41:32
  Speaker 3: Today is simple.
• 41:33
  Speaker 2: Today is simple?
• 41:34
  Speaker 3: Today simple?
• 41:35
  Speaker 10: All right?
• 41:35
Speaker 15: Yeah, Yeah, Today's just the boulevard and in any road
• 41:38
Speaker 15: that accesses the boulevard.
• 41:39
Speaker 3: It's the time trials.
• 41:40
Speaker 15: So they run up and down the boulevard as fast
• 41:41
Speaker 15: as they can, or bike uping down them the boulevard
• 41:44
Speaker 15: fast they can. And today's just the boulevard they were in.
• 41:47
Speaker 15: They started, they started set up around you know, five am,
• 41:50
  Speaker 15: started racing already.
• 41:51
Speaker 3: They'll be done about four.
• 41:53
Speaker 15: Over the last couple of years, they did this over
• 41:55
Speaker 15: two days. We're doing ever one day this year. That's
• 41:56
Speaker 15: why it lasts a little bit longer. But they'll be
• 41:58
Speaker 15: out of they'll be out of the area before or
• 42:00
Speaker 15: people start leaving the work. Tomorrow is when things get
• 42:02
Speaker 15: a little bit complicated downtown. Tomorrow and Thursday is when
• 42:06
Speaker 15: we have the criteria in races downtown that essentially will start.
• 42:09
Speaker 15: They'll start set up about four, but the hard closures
• 42:12
Speaker 15: start at five tomorrow evening Tomorrow evening. Yet tomorrow five
• 42:15
Speaker 15: pm tomorrow morning, you're not gonna have any issues going around.
• 42:18
Speaker 15: Now you'll have the Boulevard, which is the you know
• 42:19
Speaker 15: where the start finished line is still shut down. So
• 42:22
Speaker 15: you don't want to travel on the Boulevard tomorrow, but
• 42:24
Speaker 15: into downtown. Really think about it. From Court Street to
• 42:28
Speaker 15: Hall Street, Lee Street to the Boulevard at five pm,
• 42:32
Speaker 15: you're locked in. You're not going anywhere. So if you're
• 42:35
Speaker 15: in that footprint Court Street to Hall Lead to the boulevard,
• 42:39
Speaker 15: you're stuck. So if you want to stay downtown for
• 42:41
Speaker 15: the races, you don't want to stay all night. Just
• 42:43
Speaker 15: go park outside, walk right back in. It's three blocks Dave.
• 42:46
Speaker 15: It's not far away, So go park out, come back in.
• 42:49
Speaker 15: If you're at work, leave a little bit early. If
• 42:51
Speaker 15: you're leaving out of town, you'll try to get out
• 42:53
Speaker 15: right before five so that you can make sure that
• 42:55
Speaker 15: you can get out of town. We have a little
• 42:56
Speaker 15: bit of wiggle room in there, so nobody's gonna get
• 42:58
Speaker 15: stuck if they need to. The police officers are there
• 43:01
Speaker 15: to be able to help people out in cases of emergency,
• 43:03
Speaker 15: but really we need folks out of town by five
• 43:05
Speaker 15: point fifteen in that little block area.
• 43:08
Speaker 3: But just move your car. That's what I do.
• 43:10
Speaker 15: I'm just go move my car over to a side
• 43:12
Speaker 15: street a few blocks away, and then I walk in
• 43:15
Speaker 15: and then I'm able to enjoy the event, eat downtown,
• 43:18
Speaker 15: watch the racing, and then get in my car and
• 43:20
Speaker 15: easily get home. So it's but Wednesday and Thursday, those
• 43:23
Speaker 15: are the big Those are the big closures.
• 43:26
Speaker 3: Court to Hale lead of the boulevard. Those are going
• 43:29
Speaker 3: to be locked down.
• 43:29
Speaker 15: The boulevard's lockdown all week, and then maybe I'll come
• 43:32
Speaker 15: back Thursday. We can talk about Friday, Saturday, Sunday. That'll
• 43:35
Speaker 15: probably probably be easier. The road races are a little
• 43:38
Speaker 15: bit more complicated. Those are mostly rolling closures, but that
• 43:41
Speaker 15: hard closures starting tomorrow at five pm. It's really hard
• 43:46
Speaker 15: for us to break those because that's if you've seen
• 43:48
Speaker 15: the Criterion race, that's fast. There's not a whole lot
• 43:50
Speaker 15: of time to get cars out and to move around the.
• 43:54
Speaker 2: Thing that I guess really took me by surprise. Have
• 43:56
Speaker 2: you never seen an event like this? A couple of
• 43:59
Speaker 2: years ago, I guess probably the first year I was
• 44:02
Speaker 2: down at five well it was actually another name. At
• 44:04
Speaker 2: that time. We were doing a live broadcast on the
• 44:06
Speaker 2: mountain and I was down there and I just could
• 44:08
Speaker 2: not get over the speed that those bikes go by you.
• 44:12
Speaker 2: I mean, that was the thing that just blew me away.
• 44:14
Speaker 2: It was like, holy crap, look at that. See how
• 44:17
Speaker 2: fast these guys are going.
• 44:18
  Speaker 3: It's insane.
• 44:19
Speaker 15: I was talking with a friend of mine who's usually
• 44:20
Speaker 15: out of town this week, but he's going to be
• 44:21
Speaker 15: in and he was like, where do I stand? And
• 44:23
Speaker 15: I was like, well, let's move you around during the
• 44:26
Speaker 15: race so that you can get side of kind of
• 44:28
Speaker 15: max exposure. But it is one of the more fascinating
• 44:31
Speaker 15: sporting events I've ever watched, and I certainly ever watched live.
• 44:34
Speaker 15: And I think it was the first year and even
• 44:35
Speaker 15: last year. You know, it really is fascinating to sit
• 44:39
Speaker 15: and watch. But also too that, you know, one of
• 44:42
Speaker 15: the things the cyclists love about coming to Charleston is
• 44:44
Speaker 15: how friendly people are. We say that a lot, but
• 44:46
Speaker 15: it really is true. Like I know we used that
• 44:48
Speaker 15: a lot of people. People in Virginia friendly, We really
• 44:50
Speaker 15: are because folks from the house that aren't used to that,
• 44:53
Speaker 15: but they love more than anything when you go up
• 44:55
Speaker 15: and start asking them about their sport.
• 44:57
  Speaker 3: Right.
• 44:57
Speaker 15: So, I mean I'm just sitting there, I could see
• 44:58
Speaker 15: cyclists who aren't in a race, and I walk up, like,
• 45:00
Speaker 15: why is why is this person doing this? Why are
• 45:02
Speaker 15: they doing this? I mean it's a ten minute conversation
• 45:04
Speaker 15: about the the psychology of cycling and the sport itself
• 45:08
Speaker 15: and how it moves around. But they really like that
• 45:09
Speaker 15: because they're proud of what they do and they like
• 45:12
Speaker 15: to they like to talk about It's just like any
• 45:14
  Speaker 15: athlete does.
• 45:14
Speaker 3: So it is one of those things too.
• 45:15
Speaker 15: Don't be shy about talking to the athletes, whether you
• 45:17
Speaker 15: see them out on the street or whether you're you
• 45:20
Speaker 15: know they're watching the race, because it really is fascinating
• 45:22
Speaker 15: to get to learn, and there's not a whole lot
• 45:24
Speaker 15: of sports where you get to do that, where you
• 45:25
Speaker 15: can actually talk to somebody who participates in it while
• 45:27
Speaker 15: it's happening. And it's even fun too, because if you
• 45:30
Speaker 15: watch the criteria there'll be people who you know, get
• 45:33
Speaker 15: knocked out of the race for one reason or the
• 45:35
Speaker 15: other and they just sort of stand there and they'll
• 45:36
Speaker 15: talk to everybody about, Oh, this is what happened.
• 45:38
  Speaker 3: Is what happened.
• 45:38
Speaker 15: It's really fascinating and they're super nice people, and you know,
• 45:42
Speaker 15: we want them to get to experience how pleasant people
• 45:45
Speaker 15: in Charleston are, and that's why they like being here.
• 45:47
Speaker 15: The cyclists come back more often than you think they do.
• 45:49
Speaker 15: They come back during the year, mostly to you know,
• 45:52
Speaker 15: to visit and to see friends and to shop around,
• 45:54
Speaker 15: but also to get up Bridge Road to make sure
• 45:56
Speaker 15: that they can still have the stamina to get up
• 45:57
Speaker 15: the get up the hill. But it really is something
• 46:00
Speaker 15: where the cyclists really do enjoy coming here, and that's
• 46:02
Speaker 15: something we're very proud of because we've worked hard to
• 46:04
Speaker 15: make that hospitality a big part of the city.
• 46:07
Speaker 2: Where's the place where people can go for the easiest information,
• 46:09
Speaker 2: I mean the city, the website, social media. Where's the
• 46:12
Speaker 2: quick and I am going to try to squeeze you
• 46:14
Speaker 2: in here on Thursday to come back just talk.
• 46:15

• 46:18

• 46:55
Speaker 3: times don't very very much. They stick very tight.
• 46:58
Speaker 15: They're tightly run events, so it really is as accurate
• 47:01
Speaker 15: as possible. Tonight their Wednesday night tonight is they'll be done.
• 47:04
Speaker 15: They'll be out about four Tomorrow night. They're going to
• 47:06
Speaker 15: be running till about midnight. It'll be running till about midnight.
• 47:10
Speaker 15: Thursday night, they'll be running till about eleven so they're
• 47:12
Speaker 15: going to be late nights. But by the time you
